Easy business integration Once connected, the software automatically converts CAD data into a web-capable format, enhances or links it with metadata or performs other special data processing steps. Fraunhofer IGD’s services are easily integrated into a cloud environment, meaning that they are also suitable for large-scale data throughput. With the webVis system also developed by Fraunhofer IGD, 3D CAD displays are integrated into web applications with minimal effort. The combination of a client-based Javascript system and the instant3Dhub services platform allows app developers to visualise different CAD formats (such as Aveva RVM, JT, Catia, IGES, STEP) directly in the browser. Regardless of what (often varied) data and representation formats are used by a company, the system “understands” these formats and can combine them into a single view.

ABS claims industry first for 3D model surveys DIGITAL PILOT | ABS claims to be the first classification society to use 3D digital models for class surveys, a move that enables it to support 3D model integration into both engineering and surveys. The pilot project, carried out with National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO), a division of General Dynamics with three shipyards, involved the use of 3D models by surveyors, instead of traditional 2D drawings, for the simulation of new construction surveys on
several steel blocks. The 3D models, which allow a designer or a shipyard to eliminate 2D drawings thereby saving up to 25% of design time, can be seen by surveyors in ABS software remotely and in real time. They are easier to navigate and also save time in the training of shipyard craftsmen, ABS explained. Commenting on the development, NASSCO’s vice president of Engineering & CIO, Tom Glinatsis, said: “Elimination of 2D
drawings from the design and construction process is very appealing to NASSCO. We look forward to continuing to work with ABS to identify digital initiatives that can improve shipbuilding and classification.” Christopher J. Wiernicki, ABS chairman, said: “ABS is leading the way in the development of digital class and this significant step forward is another example of how we are innovating with digital technologies to deliver operational efficiencies for the industry.” Ship & Offshore | SmartShip | 2020

Mixed reality As an open standards-based system, a large number of end devices can be used with instand3Dhub, with even Microsoft’s HoloLens mixed reality glasses being able to access and explore exceptionally large 3D models. Instant3Dhub makes it possible to work in real-world conditions with simultaneous access to digital content. The key lies in its special data processing method as well as consistent use of web technologies and open standards. Through interaction between server and client, even entire models of a ship or offshore platform can be visualised in real time on a conventional browser. This system automatically analyses data, divides it up spatially and only sends the elements needed for a specific display.
