A PILLAR OF FAITH AND DEVOTION

Reverend Raymond G. Coke , CD, JP

In 1961, a pivotal moment in the history of the Presbyterian Church of Jamaica unfolded as Raymond George Coke was ordained to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament. Today, Reverend Coke, CD, JP, is admired as a religious leader whose ministry has been marked by unwavering commitment to God and tireless service to both the church and the broader ecumenical community.

The longevity of Reverend Coke’s service reflects the divine grace that has sustained his mission. To many from Meadowbrook United Church in St. Andrew, Jamaica, where he pastored prior to retirement, “Reverend Coke” evokes endearing affection and deep respect. He officiated weddings, christened children, and offered solace at funerals, becoming an integral part of numerous lives.

As a child, I admired Reverend Coke, and as an adult, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing his dedication firsthand. Throughout the years, he has consistently demonstrated qualities of patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, peace, love, joy, and goodness.

VBD Magazine is honored to celebrate the extraordinary journey of Reverend Coke, who has led with excellence for over six decades, changing lives and declaring the sovereignty of God. His life and work reflect the virtues of faith, resilience, and compassion, exemplifying the positive impact one individual can have in shaping communities and inspiring generations.

FAMILY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Born in Manchester, Jamaica, Reverend Coke’s journey from humble beginnings

FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH YOUR COMMUNITY BY CONDUCTING SURVEYS TO UNDERSTAND PEOPLE’S NEEDS. DEVELOP A PLAN TO ADDRESS THOSE NEEDS EFFECTIVELY. INVEST TIME IN VISITATION TO BUILD MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS.

to influential leadership spans decades and countries. He received his early education at Spalding and Franklyn Town Primary Schools, later attending Buxton High School, the Preceptor’s Institute, and the West Hill College of Education in Birmingham, England.

Reverend Coke sensed the call to ministry in 1954. After discussing it with his minister, Reverend Douglas Miller, he was awarded a scholarship for pre-seminary preparation in 1955. He studied at the Union Theological Seminary (now the United Theological College of the West Indies), but his true lessons were learned in the field of full-time ministry.

Despite his love for ministry, Reverend Coke understands the importance of time management and organization to balance personal, family, and ministry demands and prevent burnout. The ministry often requires being on call 24/7, 365 days a year, so he ensures he takes time to rest and spend quality moments with his family.

Reverend Coke and his wife Ruth have been married for 62 years. Their beloved union has blessed them with two daughters, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. His advice for a strong marriage centers on respect, care, and teamwork. “When challenges come on the journey, as they will, it is important to work through them together,” Reverend Coke shares. “It means open communication and sharing all responsibilities in the family. Love for each other and God is the binding force.”

PASTORAL MINISTRY

Reverend Coke emphasizes that pastoral ministry is a divine calling. Once answered, there is no turning back. He quotes Jesus Christ in St. Luke 9:62 (KJV): “No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Jesus did not promise the journey would be easy, and indeed, Reverend Coke’s ministry wasn’t without hurdles. Interpersonal dynamics often tested his patience and compassion. He recalls counseling an abusive husband who once threatened him during a session. Remarkably, that same man returned years later to apologize, and today, the couple is happily married. Encouraged by the tremendous blessings and joy when souls are saved and lives are transformed, Reverend Coke knows the journey is worthwhile.

This is why his heart aches for the shortage of human resources within the church to answer the call of ministry. He acknowledges that those who follow in his footsteps will face challenges, but he encourages new seminary graduates to remember, “With God all things are possible,” a mantra that has guided him throughout his ministry. To those who have answered the call, he offers sage advice:

1. Familiarize yourself with your community by conducting surveys to understand people’s needs. Develop a plan to address those needs effectively. 2. Invest time in visitation to build meaningful relationships.

3. Commit everything to the Lord, recognizing that no detail is too small or basic.

DECADES OF SERVICE

In 1960, Reverend Coke began his ministry at the Retirement Presbyterian Church (now United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands (UCJCI)) in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, overseeing four churches. In 1964, he moved to the West Bay Presbyterian Church in Grand Cayman (now UCJCI), where he served for six years. Upon returning to Jamaica in 1970, he ministered at North Street United Church, located in an inner-city area of Kingston, for eight and a half years. He was then called to serve at Meadowbrook United Church, where he spent 23 years before retiring.

During his years in ministry, Reverend Coke served as:

l Vice President (1977-1980) and President (1984-1986) of the Jamaica Council of Churches.

l Moderator of Synod of the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands (1984-1987).

l Chairman of the Churches Ecumenical Loan Fund (ECLOF, 1979-2001) and the Jamaica Ecumenical Mission (JEM, 1980-2021).

l Chair of the National Leadership Breakfast (1999-2002).

l Founding Director of the United Way of Jamaica (30-year involvement).

l Founder of the Meadowrest Memorial Gardens (cemetery).

Although Reverend Coke officially retired at that point, he continued to serve as Interim and Acting Minister for the next nineteen years across ten charges. “I believe that I am the only Minister who has served in this many interim and acting positions in the United Church,” Reverend Coke asserts. His post-retirement ministry included serving at:

l Savannah United Church, Grand Cayman.

l Lincoln Kirk in Franklin Town, Jamaica.

l Hellshire United in Hellshire, St. Catherine, Jamaica.

l Mannings Hill/Oberlin in the hills of St. Andrew, Jamaica.

l Webster Memorial, Kingston, Jamaica.

l Hope United Church, Kingston, Jamaica.

l St. Stephen’s United, Kingston, Jamaica.

l Kings Gate United, Kingston, Jamaica.

l Boulevard United Church/Pretoria Road United Church.

l East End United Church/Gun Bay United Church, Grand Cayman.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Reverend Coke received the Commander of the Order of Distinction (CD) from the Government of Jamaica. This prestigious award acknowledged his impact in education, community development, and religion.

SHARING HIS JOURNEY

It is no surprise that Reverend Coke penned his first book, Called to Serve, an autobiography detailing his life and ministry in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

“I was inspired by a former United Church General Secretary, Reverend Earl Thomas, who kept encouraging me to document my journey through my many years of ministry,” says Reverend Coke. “I was finally able to use the weeks of quarantine during COVID-19 to complete my manuscript. I hope that it will be a useful book for young clergy and lay persons who will take wisdom and knowledge from an elder pastor. They will understand that ministry has many challenges and requires much sacrifice.”

NEW BEGINNINGS

Now in retirement, Reverend Coke remains active. “I have started working

with senior citizens and have helped three of them get their homes repaired as well as assist them with their banking and signing legal documents as a Justice of the Peace. I’m also writing my next book. Stay tuned! It has been a marvelous journey, and every step of the way God has guided me, provided for me and the family and spared my life from a few car accidents, a gunman, and much more.”

Quoting the late Henry Ward, Reverend Coke states, “‘The soldier of the Lord never retires; he dies on the battlefield for the Lord.’ I am thankful to God that He spared my life to serve for such a long time, and yes, I would do it again.”

A Lifetime of Service Through Education and Community

With a career spanning several decades and multiple disciplines, Professor Nathaniel Manning’s journey is evidence of the power of perseverance, the invaluable role of mentorship, and the profound impact a single individual can have on academic excellence and community enrichment. From his early days as a young tutor in Shreveport, Louisiana, to becoming a respected professor and community leader, Manning’s genuine desire to uplift others has been the cornerstone of his success.

Manning’s outlook on life is a compelling blend of unwavering optimism and grounded realism, fueled by an unshakable faith. During his interview with VBD Magazine, Manning’s words were infused with thoughtfulness and clarity, demonstrating his understanding of both the intricate subjects at hand and the broader world. As he continues to inspire future generations, his legacy of excellence and service endures, leaving an indelible mark on the world around him.

A FOUNDATION BUILT ON FAITH AND FAMILY

Manning’s roots are deeply entwined with his faith and family. As a member of the Williams Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Temple, he serves on the Boards of Stewards and Trustees, leveraging his spiritual gifts to foster growth in the church through discipleship. “My faith has always been a cornerstone in my life, guiding me in both my personal and professional endeavors,” Manning reflects.

Married to his beloved wife Beverly for nearly 45 years, Manning’s family is blessed with two children, Daryll and Nicole. His journey with Beverly began at Grambling State University in Louisiana, where she stood out as the top graduate of his class. Manning often reflects that choosing Beverly as his life partner was his wisest decision, underscoring the deep bond and steadfast support that have been the foundations of their enduring relationship.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Manning boasts an impressive and diverse educational background. He completed his doctoral studies in Applied Statistics and Predictive Analysis, specializing in econometrics, at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Prior to that, he earned a Master of Science in Applied Economics from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Manning also holds an MBA with a concentration in Finance from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston.

His undergraduate studies were completed with distinction; he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science from Grambling State University. Complementing his formal education, Manning was an International Business Scholar at the Eli Broad School of Business at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, and he has also undergone corporate

education systems management training at IBM’s Mid-Hudson Education Training Center in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Manning’s prolific contributions to the academic community include:

l “A Comparative Analysis of Sub-Group School Performance in Caddo Parish Public Schools” – NAACP Conference – BTW High School, February 2018

l “Closing the Digital Divide Among Disparate Socio-economic Sub-groups” – NBMBAA Conference – Anaheim, California, September 2014

versity of Texas at Austin, June 2007

l “Utilizing Federal Reserve Bank Data (FRED) to Teach Macroeconomics” - National Economics Teachers Association 2021

FROM CORPORATE LEADERSHIP TO ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Manning’s career began in the private sector, notably at IBM in Rochester, Minnesota, where he designed compiler languages for mid-range computers. His career at IBM saw him rise to the position of system engineer in Dallas, Texas, before moving on to serve as Chief Information Officer for General Electric’s Power Delivery Business.

Despite his success in the corporate world, Manning’s passion for education has always been a driving force. Reflecting on his diverse experiences, Manning shares, “My career in the private sector provided me with invaluable insights into the practical applications of mathematics and computer science. These experiences have been crucial in my transition to academia, allowing me to bring real-world perspectives to my students.”

From tutoring neighborhood children in mathematics to securing a computational mathematics internship at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory during college, Manning had a continuous desire to mentor others. “My seventh-grade math teacher inspired me to love and appreciate mathematics,” Manning recalls. “I carried that passion throughout high school and on to college, excelling in Mathematics and Computer Science. I found ways to use mathematics to solve problems in computer science, economics, and finance.”

With a tenure at Bossier Parish Community College (BPCC) spanning several years, Manning has served as a faculty member in Economics, Statistics, and Mathematics since 2015. Notably, Manning has been instrumental in the development of online courses catering to a variety of learning modalities, including accelerated, traditional, and hybrid formats. These courses cover essential subjects such as Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Statistics, and Entrepreneurial Finance, reflecting Manning’s commitment to providing accessible and engaging educational opportunities.

Beyond teaching, Manning has assumed leadership roles, including serving on the Executive Leadership Committee and advocating for BPCC’s accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Manning’s dedication to academic excellence is further evidenced by his involvement in campus-wide initiatives, such as the textbook selection committee and the Academic Advisement Council. Additionally, his expertise has been recognized on a national level, as he was selected to serve as a College Board AP Microeconomics Reader from Summer 2019 to Summer 2022 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Occasionally, Manning teaches corporate and entrepreneurial finance and works as a consultant for the American Council on Education and the College Board. His consulting work includes evaluating college credit courses in economics, statistics, and mathematics, with one of his favorite assignments being with the U.S. Navy’s National Cryptologic Institute.

INSPIRING FUTURE GENERATIONS

Manning’s teaching philosophy is rooted in continuous evolution and the integration of technology. “My teaching philosophy has continued to evolve. What I thought were important aspects of learning in my earlier years of teaching have gone through continuous evaluation and modification. This is particularly true for distance learners. It is necessary to find ways to integrate new technology into the learning environment,” he explains. His approach includes using a variety of assessment tools, such as online discussion forums, summative reflections, and team assignments, to enhance collaboration and critical thinking, particularly for online learners.

He emphasizes the importance of building a sense of community in the classroom, stating, “Organization and accessibility enhance the learning environment. I find that online learning is effective when a myriad of relevant learning tools is always available. Over the years, I have developed a sequential model, using related directed readings, visuals, contemporary discussions, problem solving,

and a summative assessment. Also, I find that students have greater understanding and tend to perform better when rubrics are available. This is very important for students of economics.” For his economics students, Manning provides reviews of mathematical concepts and graphical techniques to build confidence and ensure comprehension.

BROADENING PERSPECTIVES

According to Manning, the best ways to teach 21st-century learners center around a holistic approach involving key elements such as integrating technology and digital literacy, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving, and fostering collaboration and communication.

Manning emphasizes, “Incorporating digital tools and teaching digital literacy equips students to navigate the digital age effectively.” He highlights the importance of inquiry-based learning and real-world case studies in developing critical thinking skills, stating that they “foster a deeper understanding and application of knowledge.” He also underscores the significance of collaboration and cross-cultural communication skills.

Furthermore, Manning stresses the importance of promoting social responsibility and lifelong learning among students. He asserts, “Service learning and education on global issues promote civic engagement, while flexible learning environments and a growth mindset foster adaptability. Social-emotional learning programs and mental health support are vital for students’ well-being. Interdisciplinary learning through STEAM education and project-based learning nurtures creativity and innovation. Financial and environmental education prepares students for responsible and sustainable living, equipping them with the skills and attitudes needed to thrive in an interconnected world.”

SERVICE AND ADVOCACY

Manning serves on the executive board for Volunteers for Youth Justice (VYJ), a youth advocacy group founded in 1981 with the aim of providing intervention services to children involved in the juvenile justice system, as well as offering resources to troubled youth in need of behavioral mediation and academic support. Reflecting on his involvement, Manning shares, “Being part of VYJ allows me to contribute directly to the betterment of our community, particularly by providing support to vulnerable youth navigating the juvenile justice system.”

without obstacles. Born the same year as the landmark Brown v. Board of Education (1954) decision, he experienced the slow integration of schools in the Jim Crow South. “It would be 13 years later that I attended a predominantly white junior high school,” Manning states. Despite facing challenges in high school, Manning excelled academically and attributes his success to the preparation received from his Black educators at Brooks Street Elementary School. “I am forever indebted to them.”

MY FAITH HAS ALWAYS BEEN A CORNERSTONE IN MY LIFE, GUIDING ME IN BOTH MY PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL ENDEAVORS.

Furthermore, he is honored to serve on the mayor-appointed City of Shreveport Human Relations Committee, where he provides resources and mediation services for marginalized groups who have faced discrimination based on race, gender, orientation, and socioeconomic status. Additionally, Manning actively participates in initiatives such as the YWCA Dialogue on Race and various interfaith outreach efforts, striving to foster dialogue, understanding, and inclusivity within the diverse community.

DEFYING ADVERSITY

Manning’s path to success has not been

Manning also excelled in his college preparatory courses. “Upon graduation, I had the opportunity to attend several colleges with full scholarships.” Ultimately, he made a pivotal decision to attend Grambling State University over other opportunities.

LOOKING AHEAD

“Despite having reached retirement age, I will continue to do something fulfilling,” Manning says. This fall, he plans to enroll in a Graduate Certification Program at MIT or UC Berkeley in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. Additionally, he is working with his daughter to establish a consulting firm specializing in Data Analytics.

THRIVING THROUGH MIDLIFE & MENOPAUSE

An Exclusive Interview with Dr. Tayo

“Life begins at 40!” How many times have we heard this phrase? But for women moving into midlife, it feels like the exact opposite. Who and what has prepared us for the rollercoaster that comes with the journey hidden in the years that follow? Hot flashes, brain fog, mood swings, extreme exhaustion and more eventually lead to one thing…menopause! The time span during which those symptoms start typically lasts 3-10+ years before menopause, which occurs 12 consecutive months after your last menstrual period: at around 51 years.

High-achieving women are used to navigating life with determination, embracing challenges directly to reach their goals. However, when they encounter this new phase, they are often unprepared. In these situations, they urgently seek someone who can provide the necessary support and guidance. Who can they turn to for help? Where?

Enter Dr. Tayo, the visionary CEO of Back To Sassy Inc., and a Midlife and Menopause Strategist. With a deep understanding of the physical and emotional upheavals that accompany this phase, Dr. Tayo is passionate about guiding women through these often turbulent years. Her holistic approach not only digs deep to address the symptoms of menopause but also empowers women to reclaim their vitality and confidence as they continue being fulfilled in their professional and personal lives.

When you need strategies and proven support from the trusted authority on midlife wellness for high-achieving women, Dr. Tayo understands your challenge and is here to guide you. Her goal is to help you Get Your Sassy Back! Dive into our interview.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Dr. Tayo is an experienced physician with an impressive educational background of multiple specialist and subspecialist certifications from different countries. Her medical experience has equipped her with the expertise and rigor to dig into the latest research, revealing techniques and strategies that are leading edge. In supporting high-achieving women as they

go through perimenopause and menopause, Dr Tayo swiftly addresses their complex menopause journey at the core, with little to no disruption to their careers and lives.

MIDLIFE HEALTH & WELLNESS

Even though she is a physician, like many women, menopause caught Dr Tayo by surprise! “I wasn’t aware of what and when it could start.” For her, it came into focus one chilly February morning as she was at work. She experienced three back-to-back cold electric shocks that were localized to her chest, arms and neck. Not understanding what was going on at first, she soon realized on reflection that it was her version of a hot flash! The puzzle pieces fell into place. “This finally put into context the misery from the various symptoms I had experienced over the past 2 years,” says Dr. Tayo. “It was a clear signal that I was on the way to menopause!”

Not wanting to give up or tale a reduced role in her career, this led to the long search for a solution. Once she found it, Dr Tayo was immediately inspired to develop a system where women, especially those in high-pressure careers could get tangible results in as little as two months or less, even if they had tried many other things. The system centered around the whole woman: addressing her physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing naturally. “With only a small investment of their time, they end up with exponential results that are life changing.”

THE SYNERGISTIC HORMONE BALANCING SYSTEMTM

Back To Sassy Inc. was established to provide valuable information and resources to support high-performing women as they go through perimenopause and menopause, so they can maintain their wellbeing while simultaneously advancing to the top of their chosen fields. Back To Sassy Inc. offers customized coaching, corporate programs, and consulting/strategy sessions.

Dr Tayo is available as a speaker and panelist, especially as a keynote speaker, where she speaks to raise awareness about menopause, including information about the resources available to women as they go through this challenging journey.

“I created the company to ensure that programs would be set up properly and not a fly-by-night enterprise, as is all too common in the coaching and consulting space,” states Dr Tayo.

Drawing from her own struggles with fatigue, trouble sleeping, and stubborn weight gain, Dr Tayo developed the Synergistic Hormone Balancing Systemᵀᴹ, an innovative methodology that combines cutting-edge science, holistic principles and practical strategies. This unique system has 3 Key Pillars that work in harmony, with synergistic results. By strategically putting together much smaller steps, the results are exponential and transformational. What this means to the busy woman in a time crunch is that the time taken to reignite her vitality, boost her confidence, and empower her to thrive personally and professionally is drastically shortened and at the same time, very effective. This revolutionary system enables Dr. Tayo’s clients to manage their hormones while continuing to enjoy a fulfilling career.

Her mission is to empower 100,000 women through midlife and beyond to live their dream lives by 2026.

“The fast results are due to the unique way we optimize each pillar simultaneously,” Dr. Tayo reveals, “so that the high achieving woman will be re-invigorated, feel alive and like herself again, so she can easily keep pace with the demands of her work without flagging or feeling overwhelmed. She develops a new aliveness: For herself, her work and her life, so she is confident, fulfilled and lives the life of her dreams.

MENOPAUSE 3.0.

Based on her expertise as a menopause authority and advocate, Dr. Tayo is introducing “Menopause 3.0”, a powerful cutting-edge approach revolutionizing health and wellness for the midlife woman. It synthesizes state-of-the-art science with time-tested wisdom.

Unlike the clinical and symptom-driven approach of previous strategies, Menopause 3.0 manages the menopause journey as a natural life stage rather than ‘treating’

it as a disease by delving deep into the root cause and addressing it with innovative solutions.

This approach helps high-achieving women harness the full capabilities of their physical, mental, and emotional well-being during the menopausal journey. They are empowered to confidently maintain their momentum and zest for life. The result is a seamless journey that ensures they remain dynamic, fulfilled; all while enjoying an excellent overall quality of life.

THRIVING THROUGH MIDLIFE AND

MENOPAUSE Dr. Tayo’s top tips for navigating midlife successfully.

Awareness: Menopause is a natural process that happens to every woman, beginning from her early 40’s and must not be seen as a disease or ‘treated’ as such. Being aware of what happens to you, your female loved ones and those around them, including men, is critical if you want to avoid being one of the over 85% of women who are impacted significantly, derailing their lives and careers. This means you can start making changes earlier and significantly or completely avoid the adverse effects that are a part of this tortuous rollercoaster journey if you do nothing. This also has the benefit of having the support of family, friends and at work. It is important to know that perimenopause and menopause is not a one-size-fits-all experience, whether in relation to the time of onset, severity or even the variety of symptoms. Too often, high-performing women pay no attention to this aspect of their health and wellbeing, being caught up as they are with juggling a career, personal life and other responsibilities. However, this awareness is the secret weapon that prepares them to successfully navigate what can become a transformational time in their lives.

Hormone Rebalancing Strategies: Once we grasp the origin of our symptoms, we can develop customized strategies to address them. It’s not magic; it’s science!

Energy Generation: This is critical in counteracting the effects of the hormonal shifts that occur in your metabolism and energy levels. Sleep plays a critical role here. It is not a luxury ‘when you have the time’, it is a necessity.

Brain Health: Taking care of your brain health will stop those ‘senior moments’ in its tracks and even reverse the effects as modern science has proven. Brain fog has been associated with dementia. The changes of Alzheimer’s dementia start during the perimenopause hormonal turbulence, thus not surprisingly occurring at twice the rate in women as in men.

Relax…: Chronic stress is a silent trojan horse. Finding ways to reduce stress is crucial.

THE AUTHOR

In addition to her medical credentials, Dr. Tayo is a bestselling author and sought after speaker. Dr. Tayo’s book, Menopause Mistakes: 10 Critical Mistakes High Performing Women Over 40 Make, is an essential guide for women navigating the complexities of menopause while maintaining high-level careers. ‘Menopause Mistakes’ addresses common pitfalls and provides actionable advice on managing hormonal changes without compromising professional success.

Dr. Tayo uses her extensive medical experience to also offer practical solutions to help women avoid burnout, maintain their health, and continue thriving in their careers. Her insights empower readers to

take control of their well-being and career trajectory during this pivotal life stage.

BEYOND SUCCESS

Dr. Tayo is also challenging traditional views on health and lifespan by concentrating on extending longevity. Personally, that means aiming to live even longer than her grandfather who lived to a healthy 95 years before he passed from natural causes. With the current advancements and knowledge in the field, living a healthy life to ages 100–120 is now within reach.

“There’s so much to do,” says Dr. Tayo, “and we can’t leave the 1 billion women who’ll be in perimenopause next year in the lurch, not knowing where to turn, or worse, looking in the wrong places, getting generic solutions that will definitely not work in the longer term, if they do at all.”

A LEADER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Paul Bryant

A SERVANT LEADER FOR THE 21ST CENTURY AND BEYOND

VBD Magazine is always excited to feature those societal leaders at the top of their profession—individuals who serve as influential leaders, role models, mentors, and guides to others. These individuals are walking with purpose on their appointed pathways in life. They send out a clarion call to others, signaling, “Come on! Let’s go! This way!”

Paul Bryant is one such individual and educational leader. He has navigated a traditional path— moving through the ranks as a classroom teacher, dean, and assistant principal—in arriving at his current role of K-12 school principal. However, as the principal of Positive Pathways Transition Center (PPTC), Orlando, Florida, Bryant’s daily walk as a school administrator occurs within a nontraditional and alternative school setting.

At PPTC, he walks with purpose, serving as a positive role model and mentor for students who may need extra support in their academic and behavioral development.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Bryant graduated from Marianna High School in 1989, where he played baseball and basketball at the varsity level. After graduation, he attended Chipola College in Florida on a baseball scholarship. He then played baseball at and graduated from Troy University in 1995. He wasted no time asserting himself as a quality educator, being recognized as a rookie teacher in ‘95 and earning a nomination for Teacher of the Year in ‘97. Later, he attended the University of Central Florida in Orlando, earning a master’s degree in education in 2005.

Having amassed three decades of service in Florida K-12 education, he has served as a classroom teacher for approximately 12 years and as an administrator for 17. He has worked at all levels -- elementary, middle, and high school. During his professional career, Bryant has held numerous leadership roles that have contributed to and refined his educational and administrative philosophies.

In today’s data-driven society, K-12 schools must have evidence that supports and shows that students are reading on or above grade levels. Given how schools are graded in Florida, it is crucial that students exit the educational environment and demonstrate growth in each testing area. When asked about his views on using data to make informed decisions, Bryant adds, “When I was a classroom teacher, I was continually involved in program coordination to increase student engagement and enhance test scores. As a current principal, I focus on enacting a school wide curriculum program that helps our students excel academically and in their future careers, both inside and outside the classroom.”

He continues, “Over the past decades, we have moved into the age of school accountability. Having data is essential. Test scores have become integral to our

daily existence as we must show that we are preparing our students well.”

AN EFFECTIVE SCHOOL LEADER

Bryant states that he learned much about leadership and the importance of operating within a team environment from his days as a student-athlete and, subsequently, as a school coach. He says, “Those interaction skills have never gone away. The concept of a team philosophy is essential for an effective leader.”

When asked his views on effective leadership, Bryant says, “You cannot have an effective school without effective leadership. Those two go together like a hand in a glove. The school leader is the first line of offense and defense. An effective school leader must be present, visible, and accessible in the school environment.

“An effective leader must articulate the school’s goals and vision. If a leader wants the best from teachers, he must give his best as principal. If a leader wants students to excel, then it is his duty to ensure that they can learn in a safe environment that encourages them to develop as critical thinkers and individuals focused on problem resolution.

“We must teach our students in the classroom and expose them to life skills that prepare them for the next adventures in the upcoming chapters of their lives. And in our K-12 school environment, an effective school leader must involve the parents and the community. An effective school with an effective leader must operate in a cohesive manner, integrated with the students’ families. Moreover, an effective school leader must know stakeholders should work together in a team effort.”

Bryant says, “I remember reading this in a recent article, ‘The principal is the principle.’ That is the funny thing – it is not about me, but, paradoxically, it is about me. I will not be an effective leader if I am not coordinated with my team. I

will not be able to motivate teachers to perform at their highest level. Teachers will not be able to inspire students to achieve their highest potential. We will not have an effective school. The spirit of community helps to build a climate of achievement.

“So, I am saying it really is about the students and their ability to achieve their learning goals. If my skills—interaction with my staff/faculty, communication and collaboration, organizational and team building, management of resources—are not firing on all cylinders, then Houston, we will have a problem.”

MY ADMINISTRATIVE PHILOSOPHY IS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN ACHIEVING GREATNESS IN/OUT OF THE CLASSROOM. I WANT ALL FACULTY AND STAFF TO BE GREAT AT WHAT THEY DO. I WANT TO LEAD BY EXAMPLE, AND YOU WILL RARELY FIND ME STUCK BEHIND THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK AT PPTC.

POSITIVE PATHWAYS TRANSITION CENTER

PPTC is a nontraditional, alternative school. Students who attend the school may have experienced behavioral and academic challenges in the traditional classroom. Bryant says, “Our daily goal is to promote a first-rate, second-chance opportunity for the students we serve.” With a glint in his eyes and an endearing smile, he asks, “Have you ever heard Arthur Ashe’s phrase? It is something like, ‘Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.’ That is us at PPTC. We continually endeavor to create and sustain an ecosystem where students—regardless of where they are academically and/or behaviorally—can survive and thrive.”

Per Bryant, “We cannot do what we do without the direct support of our school family and our students’ immediate family—parents, guardians. In a strong partnership between these stakeholders, we are dedicated to excellence, committed to success, and determined to invest our full efforts to maximize the potential of each student. We are role-shaping the lives of our students. At PPTC, we are a living, breathing representation of a positive path

and a belief that any student who walks through our school doors can achieve greatness. Many of our students have only heard negative feedback. We shock them with positive feedback so they know that others care about them; we want them to realize and believe they can be great.”

In his words, “At Positive Pathways, we are a family. That is the glue that holds us together. We are committed to offering the best quality instruction to all students in a safe and supportive learning environment. Additionally, we want to represent a work setting where there is a waiting list of employee candidates applying for open positions.”

Bryant concludes, “Just listen to the words in our name – positive, pathways, transition! Those three words personify what we hope to achieve with and for our students.”

SERVING OTHERS

In his leadership role, Bryant has taken steps to understand what is needed to help students reach their goals. He says, “As a conscientious employee, I strive for excellence in any job I undertake. I endeavor to work well with all stakeholders – faculty, staff, parents, and students. I am interested in helping young people attain their academic, career, and personal goals. I support a vision where student achievement is the number one priority.

“What inspires me to come to work daily is the knowledge that I have another opportunity to change someone’s life for the better. Here at PPTC, our students need a second chance. We are ‘all-in’ on helping our students reach their highest potential.”

The School Board of Orange County honored Bryant in the 2023-24 school year as an employee who showed exceptional dedication that contributed to the success of students. He was recognized as principal of PPTC by Karen Castor Dentel, District 6 School Board Member. He also was applauded for reaching students through special celebrations and ceremonies and for introducing students to restorative justice practices.

OVERALL REFLECTION

Paul Bryant is right where he needs to be in his professional journey. His parents served a combined 80 years in secondary education—his father, Elmore Bryant, a physical education teacher and coach; his mother, Eulice Bryant, a history teacher and guidance counselor. “I was conditioned to be an educator, and I honor my parents for guiding me on that path,” Bryant states.

“My administrative philosophy is to support students in achieving greatness in/out of the classroom. I want all faculty and staff to be great at what they do. I want to lead by example, and you will rarely find me stuck behind the principal’s desk at PPTC. I am in the school and actively engaged with my team and our students. I want people to know they have a voice because I cannot hear them if they have limited access to me.

“Regarding the population of students we serve at PPTC, let me reiterate: ‘our kids need a second chance.’ In that regard, we are bridgebuilders, making sure that our students can find their way. Often, that way is returning to a traditional school. We celebrate each student who walks out of PPTC on a pathway back to their zoned school. Our team looks for those teachable

moments, not only in the academic sense, but in terms of behavior and interactions with others. Finally, after each day at PPTC, as the principal, I give thanks. I sit for a moment in quiet reflection and think about how our school positively impacts students’ lives.

“I would not have been able to achieve professional success without the support of my immediate family. My fiancée, Monica, has been by my side, uplifting me whenever I need support. My boys— Nickolas, Cameron, and Cayden— are my inspirations for being the best I can be. I always want to show them that even if you get knocked down, you must continue striving for greatness.”

Paul Bryant is walking with purpose— alongside his team of administrators, staff, faculty, and, as he interjects emphatically, “our family and our community”—to support K-12 students.

The views expressed in this article are solely those of Paul Bryant as an educational administrator. They are not offered as an official Orange County Public Schools District statement.

EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH FAITH, FICTION, AND THE REALITIES OF EVERYDAY LIFE

Kimberla Lawson Roby is a name that resonates with millions of readers worldwide. As a New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author, Speaker, Podcast Host, and the Founder of Successful Women of Faith – The Sisterhood, Kimberla has crafted a legacy that intertwines faith, fiction, and female empowerment. With an impressive collection of 29 published books, including her faith-based nonfiction title The Woman God Created You to Be: Finding Success Through Faith—Spiritually, Personally, and Professionally and a multitude of beloved novels, Kimberla’s works have touched on critical issues and offered readers a mirror reflecting the complexities and triumphs of everyday life.

During our Zoom interview, Kimberla exuded a warmth and authenticity that created a palpable sense of joy, even through the screen. Her graceful and engaging presence, combined with her eloquent and welcoming manner of speaking, drew us in from the start. As she shared her journey, her radiant smile and positive energy infused our conversation with encouragement and inspiration, transforming the interview into an uplifting and memorable experience.

SEEDS OF STORYTELLING

Kimberla was born and raised in Rockford, Illinois, where she still resides today. “I grew up in a household where, by the time I was five years old, my grandparents, my mom’s parents, actually moved in with us,” she reminisces. This early familial setup, combined with a love for communication that was evident from her elementary school years, planted the seeds of storytelling within her. “Writing always felt natural to me. I started hearing compliments and wonderful feedback from my teachers,” Kimberla recalls, pointing to her early involvement in journalism and her stint as a morning anchor for her junior high school’s closed-circuit TV news broadcast.

Unlike many writers who discover their passion early on, Kimberla’s journey to becoming an author took a detour. “I never aspired to write,” she admits. “It was not until I turned 30 years old that I ever sat down and wrote the first word of my first novel.” Her initial career path was in business administration, leading to various roles in corporate America, state, and city government. Yet, despite her professional success, Kimberla felt a void—a sense that something was missing.

A LEAP OF FAITH

Inner dissatisfaction about her work life led Kimberla to begin praying, seeking divine guidance on her true purpose. “I was so miserable, and I didn’t have anything else to turn to,” she confesses. This period of introspection brought back memories of her love for writing. Encouraged by her husband, Will, and her mother, Arletha, Kimberla decided to pursue writing, leading to the creation of her debut novel Behind Closed Doors.

The path to publish this novel was fraught with challenges. “I was rejected by every single literary agent I queried and contacted,” Kimberla shares. Undeterred, she turned to editors directly, only to face further rejections. At a point of near defeat, it was her husband’s faith in her talent and his willingness to invest financially that prompted Kimberla to take the bold step of self-publishing. “Why can’t you

take your business background, start your own company, and publish the book yourself?” her husband asked, a question that set the wheels of Kimberla’s literary career in motion.

CRAFTING STORIES THAT MATTER

Kimberla’s novels explore myriads of real-life issues—sisterhood, women empowerment, Christian and family values, marriage, infidelity, single motherhood, breast cancer, infertility, and domestic violence. These themes resonate deeply with her readers, providing both solace and a sense of solidarity. “I wanted to write something that I thought, first of all, I would be interested in reading,” Kimberla explains.

Her commitment to addressing real-life struggles is evident in the feedback she receives from her readers. “They kept reading because they could relate to the problems and the struggles that these two women, the main characters, were dealing with,” Kimberla notes regarding her debut book’s reception. This authenticity has become a hallmark of Kimberla’s work, making her a trusted voice in contemporary fiction.

WRITING PROCESS

Approaching writing with a methodical mindset, Kimberla emphasizes the importance of prayer in her creative process. “When I am ready to write, I am in prayer and my prayer is for God to give me the words that He wants me to say,” she reveals. This spiritual grounding is essential to her creative process, ensuring that her work not only entertains but also uplifts and inspires.

Kimberla writes every day when drafting a novel, maintaining a disciplined schedule to keep the narrative fresh and consistent. She also values the solitude that writing requires. “I prefer to have total and complete silence throughout

YOU EITHER HAVE TO TRUST GOD AND STEP OUT ON FAITH OR NEVER DO ANY OF THE WONDERFUL THINGS HE HAS GIFTED YOU TO DO.

the entire writing of the book,” Kimberla states, emphasizing the importance of minimizing distractions to maintain her creative flow.

LITERARY EXCELLENCE

Kimberla’s contributions to literature have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards and accolades. She is the recipient of the 2013 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work – Fiction, the 2017 SOAR Radio Trailblazer of Honor award, the 2017 Southwest Florida Reading Festival Distinguished Author award, and the 2017 AAMBC Christian Fiction Author of the Year award, among others. Her work has been celebrated by the African American Literary Awards Show, earning her multiple Female Author of the Year awards. Additionally, she was inducted into the Rock Valley College Alumni Hall of Fame in 2001 and named by USA Today as one of the 100 black novelists you should read in August 2020.

Her first nonfiction book, The Woman God Created You to Be: Finding Success Through Faith—Spiritually, Personally, and Professionally, received an NAACP Image Award nomination in February 2021. In March 2024, she was honored with the Rockford Area Arts Award for

NEVER LET YOUR FIRST BAD REVIEW GET TO YOU. NEGATIVE REVIEWS CAN OVERSHADOW POSITIVE ONES IF YOU ALLOW THEM. INSTEAD, FOCUS ON THE GOOD REVIEWS AND LET THEM UPLIFT YOU.

Literary Excellence by the Rockford Area Arts Council in Illinois. Kimberla’s commitment to her community is further evidenced by her service on two Rockford-area boards: the YWCA Northwestern Illinois Foundation Board and the Friends of the Coronado Foundation Board.

WRITING WITH AUTHENTICITY

“Be yourself and write straight from your heart,” Kimberla advises aspiring writers. She encourages writers not to chase trends or compare themselves to others but to stay true to their unique voices. Kimberla highlights the significance of reading widely, especially within one’s genre, to know the craft better. She stresses the importance of understanding the publishing process early on. “Writing the book is just the beginning, reaching readers involves marketing, promotion, and strategic planning,” Kimberla shares. “Never let your first bad review get to you. Negative reviews can overshadow positive ones if you

allow them. Instead, focus on the good reviews and let them uplift you.”

Recognizing the need to support aspiring writers, Kimberla launched two master classes: one on how to write a book, sharing her personal process, and another on how to publish a book, covering both traditional and self-publishing routes. These classes are now available on demand, allowing participants to learn at their own pace.

EMPOWERING WOMEN

Throughout her career, Kimberla has touched the lives of countless women through her speaking engagements, even though she never anticipated becoming a public speaker. It all began with Easter and Christmas program speeches at church during her childhood, unknowingly laying the foundation for her future speaking engagements.

Her first speaking opportunity came after publishing her first book, when a colleague invited her to speak at a minority business organization meeting. Though initially nervous, she felt comfortable once she started speaking, thanks to her mother’s encouragement. Today, Kimberla is a sought-after speaker and podcast host. With a heartfelt approach, she shares her personal journey, aiming to inspire women to embrace their divine purpose and potential.

In 2022, Kimberla founded Successful Women of Faith—The Sisterhood, inspired by the sense of community and support she experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The group aims to connect, support, and uplift like-minded women who strive to achieve great things while staying true to their faith. This platform helps women to foster deep connections and provides an environment where they encourage and pray for one another.

FINDING BALANCE

Achieving balance amidst her many responsibilities was a journey fraught with challenges for Kimberla. In 2014, the weight of her many roles led to a debilitating bout of anxiety and insomnia, culminating in a panic attack. Urged by her physician and supported by her husband, she initially resisted the need to scale back her commitments. However, recognizing the critical importance of prioritizing her well-being, Kimberla implemented strict boundaries: dedicating her daytime hours to work and reserving evenings and Sundays for rest and rejuvenation. This newfound approach not only bolstered her health and productivity but also empowered her to confidently decline additional obligations without succumbing to guilt. Through her own experiences, Kimberla advocates passionately for the practice of self-care and the establishment of clear boundaries, demonstrating that balancing passion, purpose, and personal well-being is achievable.

Kimberla’s legacy extends far beyond the written word. She is living proof that stepping out on faith can lead to unimaginable success and fulfillment. Her story underscores the importance of following one’s passion, even when the path is uncertain. As she aptly puts it, “You either have to trust God and step out on faith or never do any of the wonderful things He has gifted you to do.”

Donna Mae Jackson

A

Donna Mae Jackson effortlessly excels in multiple roles—educator, mentor, motivational speaker, lay preacher, author, and playwright. With a unique writing style, Donna Mae draws on her experiences from her island home, Jamaica, and travels through Europe, North America, Central and South America, the Middle East, and Africa, offering her audience a rich experience through stories and

poetry. Her work reflects the authenticity and vibrancy of the cultures she has immersed herself in, making her a captivating voice in the literary world.

Dancing to the beat of her own drum, Donna Mae lives life to the fullest and inspires others to do the same. Her unconventional approach to both life and writing encourages aspiring writers to break free from the norm and embrace their own creative paths. During her

conversation with VBD Magazine, she discussed the intricacies of her remarkable journey, from the inspirations fueling her diverse body of work to the inner workings of her creative process. Donna Mae’s compelling insights demonstrate how you, too, can infuse your writing with the same passion and depth that characterize her experiences.

FAMILY AND EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Donna Mae hails from the parish of Clarendon on the beautiful island of Jamaica. Originally planning to become a postmistress, she fell in love with teaching during her time as a pre-trained teacher with the Government of Jamaica Youth Service Program. “That was a real light bulb moment for me. Being able to expand ideas of the world, to see where students’ thoughts were transforming and changing from their immediate environments to embracing wider world views, I just fell in love with how teaching, passing on knowledge, ideas and values could change the human psyche and move students to a place of empowerment,” says Donna Mae.

Her academic journey began with a Trained Teacher’s Certificate earned at Excelsior Community College bolstered by several short courses, conferences, and workshops. This was followed by a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science in Government from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. Along the way, Donna Mae cultivated a deeper understanding of educational principles and governance, laying a strong foundation for her multifaceted career.

Donna Mae expanded her expertise by training in disaster preparedness as well as becoming a seasoned student services practitioner. Her leadership roles are as diverse as her interests: she has served as President of the Caribbean Tertiary Level Personnel Association, President of the Kiwanis of North Clarendon, and President of the Crofts Hill Past Students’ Association. Additionally, she founded the On the Corner Summer School Program and the Gilda Mae Jackson Mentorship Program for young girls aged 15-22, demonstrating that her pen is not her only tool for change.

In December of 2020, Donna Mae terminated her 20 years of service as a Students Services Practitioner at the University of the West Indies and migrated to the United States to spend more time with her son and his family. She takes immense pride in her grandchildren and enjoys spending time with them.

“I want to be a participant and not an observer in the life of my family and in particular my grandchildren. I want to be able to teach them the family history and pass on our values of faith, commitment to family, and community.”

LEADING WITH AUTHENTICITY

Teaching has not only been a profession for Donna Mae but a lifelong calling that has deeply influenced her path. She has dedicated over 15 years to teaching, where she passionately shaped young minds and provided guidance to children in both rural Jamaica and urban centers. Her commitment to education extended beyond the classroom, as she worked tirelessly to inspire and uplift her students, fostering a love for learning and personal development. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to transform lives,” Donna Mae states.

Throughout her diverse career as a teacher, communication specialist, and student affairs practitioner, Donna Mae has faced numerous challenges and celebrated many triumphs, each contributing to her growth as both an educator and an individual. The experiences she gained from interacting with students of varied backgrounds have enriched her understanding of the world, allowing her to adapt and evolve her teaching methods to better serve her students.

Moreover, Donna Mae’s dedication to her students has consistently provided her with opportunities for self-improvement. She has embraced the evolving nature of education, continuously seeking new knowledge and innovative strategies to enhance her effectiveness as an educator. This relentless pursuit of excellence has not only benefited her students but has also instilled in her a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

LITERARY INSPIRATION

Thirty years ago, her journey began with writing plays for school and church, celebrating events like Black History Month, Easter, and Christmas. Over the last 10 years, she began a more systematic writing agenda gathering a huge catalog of short stories and poems, but it wasn’t until recently that she started sharing her writing with the world starting with a novella Touching the Corners of my Mind which can be found on Amazon.

She eventually entered some of her poems and stories in the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission Creative Writing Competitions, winning silver and bronze three consecutive years. Her unconventional approach means she rarely plans to write; instead, her stories evolve organically, a testament to her belief that the best writing is spontaneous. For Donna Mae, “writing a poem can take 5 minutes or 5 years and a short story can take 3 weeks to 3 years.” Sometimes, it’s deliberate, like crafting a piece for her church’s Apostle. Other times, it’s a memory plucked from the recesses of her mind from an observed incident, transformed into words on a page.

Her muse? It is none other than her late mother, Gilda Mae Jackson, who she describes as a generous and exceptional human being with unwavering commitment to family and community. Her mother’s resilience and humor shine through in every female character Donna Mae creates to some degree. Inspired by family, nature, and literary giants like Dr. Maya Angelou, Donna Mae loves her craft and the ability to touch the lives of readers with her words.

SKETCHES ON MY HEART

Donna Mae’s latest work, Sketches on My Heart: An Anthology of Poems, is a tribute to her late mother. It’s a collection that celebrates the strength of women, the power of love, and the resilience of the human spirit. “I wanted to honor my mother’s legacy even though she has been dead twenty years now. My mother represents the quintessential strength of a woman and many of the poems are dedicated to her. Writing this anthology taught me patience, an appreciation for

my talent, but most importantly, the unwavering commitment of my mother to family, church, community, and God.

“I hope readers will see the love and admiration I have for my mother. She taught me unconditional love, which I have passed on to my son and incorporated into my own parenting rituals. I hope healing can take place for some women who have suffered abandonment, loss, and overwhelming unhappiness. I also hope readers will see the strength that women possess and importantly that women are survivors. Finally, I hope they experience love, laughter, and a wide range of emotions.”

FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS

Donna Mae’s advice to aspiring authors is to be authentic. “It’s important to use your own voice. While you may emulate and admire an author of distinction and good repute, you should always remain true to yourself. Use your own voice, tell your own story, even if it’s unconventional, and don’t rush the process. What is critical though is that you start the journey, just start to write.”

ON THE HORIZON

“A second anthology is already in progress, along with a series of short stories and a faith-based motivational book,” Donna Mae reveals. Additionally, she is venturing into children’s literature, editing books she created for her grandchildren, to share with the world and writing new ones.

WRITING FOR ME IS ALL ABOUT DIVING INTO THE MESSY, BEAUTIFUL, AND SOMETIMES HEARTBREAKING EXPERIENCES THAT PEOPLE GO THROUGH. IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT TELLING A STORY; IT’S ABOUT SHARING TRUTHS THAT HIT YOU RIGHT IN THE FEELS. WHETHER IT’S THE STRUGGLES I’VE FACED OR THE MOMENTS OF PURE JOY, IT ALL FUELS MY PASSION TO WEAVE TALES THAT RESONATE WITH OTHERS.

discover the sources of her inspiration, her unique writing process, and her latest literary offering.

BEHIND THE WORDS

Driven by compassion, Denise draws her inspiration from diverse sources such as her joys and struggles, music, and the cries and burdens of the people around her. She sees writing as more than just storytelling; it is a ministry – “For me, it’s deeper than entertainment but more like a quest to leave a memorable imprint upon the heart,” Denise shares.

“Writing for me is all about diving into the messy, beautiful, and sometimes heartbreaking experiences that people go through. It’s not just about telling a story; it’s about sharing truths that hit you right in the feels. Whether it’s the struggles I’ve faced or the moments of pure joy, it all fuels my passion to weave tales that resonate with others. Plus, there’s something awesome about how art, like dance and stage plays, syncs up with writing—it’s like tapping into a divine creative flow. We are created in God’s image and likeness. Having this revelation inspires me above anything else.”

A DIVINE FLOW

Creating the perfect environment, Denise finds productivity in specific habits like writing beside a window or amidst

gentle natural movements as when the leaves sway gently. “Additionally, I find motivation from instrumental music and other art forms like Christian hip-hop,” she reveals.

While Denise values outlining her narratives, she also embraces moments of spontaneous creativity. Deep immersion into her characters allows her to convey their emotions and experiences with remarkable authenticity. “I do not stamp out the pantser process,” she explains, “as I often pick up on awesome conflicts and themes in the spirit of the moment. It’s hard to explain, but at times when I am writing from the seat of my pants, so to speak, I am transformed into another person and seemingly the words come out from nowhere! In some instances, I become the character, feeling what they feel.”

LATEST BOOK

Denise’s latest book, Killing Me Softly with His Word, was inspired by the story in St. John 4 of the Bible. “The narrative highlights a woman whose walls of defense were torn down by a short but powerful encounter with Jesus,” Denise explains. “Jesus did not capitalize on this woman’s lifestyle or character, but He offered her redemption by simply providing revelation of intimacy in true worship. He offered her grace, where others were throwing stones. He tore down her walls, causing her to see her need for redemption. This woman was finally able to look beyond the surface and go deeper, allowing her to know what was in her heart and in Jesus’ heart. It was more than sexual encounters and multiple husbands, but a quest for worship and self-discovery.”

The key takeaway from this book is the message of redemption, grace, and vulnerability. Denise hopes readers will see the beauty in vulnerability and the necessity of tearing down personal defenses to embrace redemption. The book also underscores the transformative power of grace by encouraging readers to reflect on their lives and the barriers they might need to break down to experience true redemption. Importantly,

the novel emphasizes the significance of having a relationship with God over mere religious practices.

INSIGHTS AND ADVICE

Denise advises aspiring authors to:

1. Not wait for external validation but to embrace mentorship and know their identity in Christ.

2. Trust in God’s character, especially when facing disappointments. Learn from every critical review and rating, but never stop writing.

3. Invest in their writing journey.

LOOKING AHEAD

Denise is working on a stage production titled The Breaking Point, which tackles sensitive themes like gun violence, gender confusion, and sexual abuse. This project represents her commitment to addressing real-life issues through powerful storytelling.

She is also exploring the possibility of adapting her novels into streaming series, bringing her compelling narratives to an even broader audience.

Denise Cook-Godfrey reminds us of the transformative power of vulnerability, grace, and genuine worship. We are created in God’s image. Her work continues to illuminate this profound truth, offering readers a path to introspection, growth, and ultimately, victory by design.

Her Part To Play

FAITH THROUGH WRITING

Jenny Erlingsson, an author and speaker of Nigerian descent, has dedicated her life to ministry and storytelling. After 12 years of working in junior high and women’s ministry, she moved with her family from Alabama to Iceland. When she’s not running after her four kids or ministering alongside her husband, Jenny is writing romantic fiction and creative nonfiction aimed at inspiring deep faith in diverse settings.

Jenny’s upcoming novel, Her Part to Play, intertwines faith, romance, and redemption, offering readers a deeply rooted Christian fiction experience. With a unique voice that blends authenticity with inspiration, Jenny’s work is more than storytelling— it’s a heartfelt ministry, inviting readers to explore a deeper, Christ-centered identity and connection.

THE BLURB - HER PART TO PLAY

When Adanne accepts a last-minute job as a makeup artist for a movie filming in her small Alabama hometown, all she wants is a steady paycheck to keep her family’s legacy alive. But the money hardly seems worth having to face the actor who got her fired from her last job in Hollywood.

After turning his life over to God and enduring a messy breakup, John Pope is ready to start rebuilding his career. Imagine his surprise when the woman called in to cover for his usual makeup artist is a quiet but feisty newcomer on the set—and definitely not a fan.

Sparks of tension—and could that be attraction? —fly between them. Can these star-crossed lovers find their way to happiness? Or will the bright lights of Hollywood blind their eyes to what’s right in front of them?

AN INTERVIEW WITH JENNY

Can you please provide a brief summary of your novel, Her Part to Play?

After a crisis hits her family, Adanne loses her blossoming Hollywood makeup career when she leaves to care for her dying mother. Years later, she continues to bury her grief in a busy schedule. But when a movie filming in her hometown

is in need of a last-minute expert makeup artist, her desperate need for extra income to save her family’s legacy brings her face-to-face with John Pope, the actor who got her fired those years ago. John would rather be anywhere but in Alabama and doesn’t appreciate the team change that has brought Adanne into his trailer. But as they work their way into each other’s hearts, will they have the courage to remain in each other’s lives?

Adanne is a makeup artist and John is an actor, two careers that intersect but probably aren’t seen as equally important. What kind of power dynamic does this set up between these two characters

who are also from different backgrounds? The power dynamic for them depends on where they are. Adanne doesn’t trust John, but on set she has to be close to him because of her job. John is drawn to Adanne but because of his high-profile role, he has to be careful about his actions. Additionally, because he is at the top of the call sheet, Adanne’s role as his makeup artist is a really intimate one that carries a lot of responsibility. Adanne has more connections in the community, and because John wants to know her and the town better, he has to depend on her. Although they come from different backgrounds, they both carry specific advantages they take for granted. John

is known by many but lacks belonging. Adanne has deep roots in her community but doubts her significance.

Though stories about interracial couples are more common than they once were, there are still few interracial romances on the Christian fiction shelves. What made you want to write a romance about an interracial couple?

I wanted to write a sweet romance that reflects the people we see in our churches, in our communities, and in families like mine. As followers of Christ, we are part of a diverse, colorful, and culture-filled kingdom. It’s nice to be able to place a book on the shelves that represents that and that readers can relate to. I also felt it was important to tell a story in which the differences of race weren’t emphasized, just the beauty of finding love and belonging where it may not be expected.

Between her family and the community center her parents started, Adanne has lots of responsibilities to other people in her life. How does this affect her ability to follow her own dreams and plans? Adanne feels the pressure to carry on what her parents started—to preserve their

legacy. With her brother dealing with his son’s illness, she works overtime to step into her mother’s shoes, even though she doesn’t feel equipped to do so. For Adanne, pursuing her dreams takes a back seat to making sure her parents’ dreams don’t crumble. And because of how her career was affected by John’s decisions, she’s afraid to step out of the shadow of those responsibilities. It’s all she thinks she has.

As the story opens, John is trying to make some needed changes in his life. What challenges linger from the way he used to live that make it hard for him to move forward in a positive direction? Because of John’s role, his successes and failures have often been for public consumption. But what is not visible are the scars he carries from rejection and broken relationships. As he navigates the tension of past addictions and the need to revitalize his career, he is cautious about relationships but also desperate to anchor himself somewhere that feels like home.

What does Adanne have that John’s been missing? And what does John have that Adanne’s been missing? For John, he is really drawn to how au-

thentic Adanne is, unlike his acquaintances in Hollywood. Adanne has roots in Hope Springs and the kind of tight-knit family that he really longs for. And even with Adanne’s sometimes feisty nature, he feels safe in her presence, and her words linger with him—change him. For Adanne, she doesn’t want to admit it, but she likes that John works hard to bring her out of her shell. As she spends time with him around Hope Springs, she gets a glimpse into a man who is kinder and more compassionate than she thought he was. She likes who she feels safe to be around him.

The American Queen

There is only one known queen who truly ruled a kingdom on American soil.

Over the twenty-four years she was enslaved on the Montgomery Plantation, Louella learned to feel one thing: hate. Hate for the man who sold her mother. Hate for the overseer who left her daddy to hang from a noose. Hate so powerful there’s no room in her heart for love, not even for the honorable Reverend William, whom she likes and respects enough to marry.

But when William finally listens to Louella’s pleas and leads the formerly enslaved people off the plantation, Louella begins to replace her hate with hope. Hope that they will find a place where they can live free from fear. Hope that despite her many unanswered prayers, she can learn to trust for new miracles.

Soon, William and Louella become the appointed king and queen of their self-proclaimed Kingdom of the Happy Land. And though they are still surrounded by opposition, they continue to share a message of joy and goodness--and fight for the freedom and dignity of all.

The American Queen weaves together themes of love, hate, hope, trust, and resilience in the face of great turmoil. With every turn of the page, you will be transported to a pivotal period in American history, where oppressed people become extraordinary heroes.

Michael “Kleos” Chin

Faith-based filmmaker Michael “Kleos” Chin masterfully blends faith and creativity. Renowned for his dedication to his craft, he produces films that consistently convey universal messages of love, hope, redemption, and purpose that transcend religious boundaries. As a producer, scriptwriter, and author, Michael’s journey from his early days in performing arts schools to becoming a respected name in the industry is both inspiring and enlightening.

As Michael continues to create films and captivate audiences, his impact on the industry and the lives of his viewers grows ever more evident. In our exclusive feature, we explore Michael “Kleos” Chin’s journey, diving into the inspirations, challenges, and triumphs that shape his path. With his innovative approach and collaborative spirit, the future of faithbased filmmaking looks incredibly promising.

THE GENESIS OF A FILMMAKER

Michael’s passion for storytelling was ignited early on. Raised in an environment steeped in the performing arts, he attended a performing arts school from kindergarten through eighth grade. This foundation was further solidified during his high school years, where his major in acting exposed him to various facets of performance and storytelling.

His curiosity was piqued by the world of filmmaking during high school. While he initially focused on acting, his interest in film production grew as he observed his peers in the film department. “I was always hanging out with them, learning and watching,” he recalls. “I realized I could write my own stories and act in them whenever I wanted.” This revelation set Michael on a path that would eventually lead him to create films that are both impactful and meaningful.

PASSION FOR FILM

IN FAITH-BASED CINEMA

Michael’s films are characterized by their raw, authentic portrayal of universal themes that resonate with audiences from diverse backgrounds. As Michael puts it, “I don’t make those cheesy church films. I make real, raw, authentic films that, no matter what background you come from, church world or secular, you still receive the universal message of love.”

Currently, Michael has three movies available on Tubi, a free streaming platform, and on DVD at Walmart.com. His films include two Christian dramas and a Christian superhero movie. The first of these, The Wages of Sin, tells the story of a respected pastor whose unthinkable sin leads to his downfall. With over 2.5 million views on Tubi, it has clearly struck a chord with viewers.

Perhaps most notable among Michael’s works is his second film, a Christian superhero movie, The Keys of the Kingdom. The film’s plot centers on an archangel who arrives to awaken an army of souls to combat Satan’s plan to destroy the world. This innovative take on the superhero genre sets Michael apart from traditional faith-based filmmakers.

Michael’s third film, A Mother’s Daughter, follows a young woman whose life is thrown into chaos by falling for the wrong man. This film has garnered over 5.2 million views, a testament to Michael’s ability to connect with audiences on a deep, emotional level.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

Unlike major studios with substantial budgets, Michael often relies on creative solutions to bring his visions to life. For his first film, he utilized stimulus checks and his ability to maximize resources. “I can make the same level of quality film with a micro-budget,” he says. This resourcefulness is complemented by his all-encompassing approach to filmmaking, where everything from writing to editing is handled in-house by Michael and his dedicated team.

Despite financial challenges, Michael remains committed to his vision. He acknowledges that adhering to his faithbased mandate can sometimes limit funding opportunities, as mainstream networks may have different content requirements. However, Michael’s dedication to producing content that aligns with his beliefs remains unwavering. “I could easily get funding if I compromised my values, but I won’t do that,” he declares. “The mandate that I have from the Lord is to push His content.”

FAITH-BASED CINEMA

“There is such a hunger and thirst for faith-based content, especially within these big networks,” Michael states. He believes that the collective consciousness is shifting towards more positive, uplifting content. “People are coming together in one accord for God. There’s a mass awakening and returning.”

Michael is passionate about mentoring aspiring filmmakers. He encourages them to stay true to their faith and vision, even in the face of pressure to conform. “Faith without works is dead. When you know you’ve heard God tell you to make that movie, take each step, no matter how long it takes,” he advises.

EXPANDING INFLUENCE

Beyond filmmaking, Michael is also an author. Together with his wife Desiree, he co-wrote Almost Not Born, a book that explores the warfare of the mind and emphasizes the power of God’s truth over Satan’s lies. The book’s cover, featuring a woman and a serpent, symbolizes the struggle against the enemy’s attempts to thwart God-given destinies.

Looking ahead, Michael envisions a growing demand for faith-based content.

He sees a shift in the entertainment industry, with more people seeking content that aligns with their values. This shift, he believes, will create more opportunities for filmmakers like him to share their stories with a broader audience.

Michael is passionate about impacting the education system through his work. He has developed a program that integrates visual and performing arts into schools, allowing students to express their creativity in ways that honor their faith. By collaborating with schools and communities, Michael aims to inspire the next generation to pursue their creative talents while staying true to their beliefs.

Collaborating with other creatives is something that Michael is passionate about so that he can help bring their visions to life. Further, Michael is juggling multiple projects simultaneously. “I’m working on several movies right now,” he reveals. Although he is tight-lipped about specific details, his excitement about the future is palpable. His drive to create content that glorifies God and inspires audiences remains unwavering.

VICTORIOUS BY DESIGN ENTREPRENEURSHIP

In the bustling consultation room of Creature Care Veterinary Clinic in Trinidad & Tobago, VBD Magazine had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Nadin Grant-Thompson, a vibrant and influential figure in the world of animal care. As the owner and lead veterinary surgeon, Dr. Thompson reflected on her early ambitions, discussed the significant milestones that have shaped her career, and shared valuable advice for aspiring veterinarians. With a warm smile and boundless enthusiasm, she recounted the experiences and inspirations that led her to establish this veterinary practice.

A LIFELONG PASSION

Dr. Thompson has dedicated her life to the well-being of animals, making her journey from a young dreamer in Kingston, Jamaica, to an accomplished veterinary professional both moving and remarkable. Her educational background is extensive and impressive. Dr. Thompson attended Stella Maris Preparatory School and Immaculate Conception High School in Kingston, Jamaica, where she excelled academically.

Driven by her passion for animals, she pursued a Bachelor of Science in Zoology, with minors in Chemistry and Biochemistry, from the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, graduating with honors. She then earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from UWI’s St. Augustine Campus, where she was recognized as the top student in her cohort. For the past 18 years, Dr. Thompson has been a part-time tutor at UWI’s St. Augustine Campus, engaging first- and second-year medical students.

Reflecting on her inspiration to pursue veterinary medicine, Dr. Thompson shares, “I desired and dreamed of becoming a veterinarian from I was three years old. I was reminded of this by my mom. As a Christian teenager, after reading Genesis, it struck me that humans were to tend to animals. I wanted to play a direct role in God’s plan involving animals.” Dr. Thompson’s passion was further fueled by her family’s extensive range of pets and exposure to animal care from a young age.

FROM PASSION TO PRACTICE

Dr. Nadin Grant-Thompson

A JOURNEY IN VETERINARY MEDICINE

THE LEAP TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP

In 2011, Dr. Thompson founded Creature Care Veterinary Clinic and Pet Supplies, driven by a desire for flexibility and financial independence. She recalls, “The need for flexibility arose the same year I had my second son. I wanted financial independence and sustainability.”

The clinic’s name reflects Dr. Thompson’s broad interest in all animal species. Prior to attending veterinary school, she spent seven years in zoo, exotic, and wildlife biology and conservation work. This experience greatly influenced the services Creature Care offers today, extending to not just common pets like dogs and cats but also rabbits, birds, iguanas, and even snakes.

From preventive medicine and consultations to surgeries and emergency care, Creature Care services include deworming, vaccination, vitamins, spay and neuter and other soft tissue surgeries, blood tests, urinalysis, dental scaling, ultrasound, boarding, skin tests and treatment, echocardiography, electrocardiography, grooming, and boarding.

The Pet Supplies Store, which celebrates 5 years this month, offers pet food, treats, accessories, veterinary diets, and other products to prevent and treat medical conditions.

ADDRESSING CHALLENGES

Despite the rewarding nature of her work, Dr. Thompson faces significant challenges. As a veterinary surgeon, she contends with unqualified individuals posing as veterinarians, societal undervaluation of veterinary services, and the physical and mental demands of the profession. “There’s a lot of bashing over prices, and the expectation that pet care should have no or

WHAT I SEE EMERGING IS THE EXPECTATION OF OWNERS TO RECEIVE WHATSAPP SERVICES WHERE THEY OFTEN MESSAGE WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF CONDITIONS OR PICTURES AND VIDEOS AND THEN EXPECT TREATMENT ADVICE.

little cost,” she states. As a business owner, she deals with security concerns and rising operational costs in a crime-ridden society.

STAYING CURRENT

In the field of veterinary medicine, staying updated with the latest advancements is crucial. Dr. Thompson ensures she remains at the forefront through continuous education. “I attend various conferences, webinars, workshops, and read journal articles and veterinary magazines. I also use online resources,” she explains.

Technology has significantly impacted the practice of veterinary medicine, and Dr. Thompson embraces these advancements. Digital medical devices, such as digital x-rays and blood testing machines, have revolutionized diagnostics, allowing for safer x-rays, along with faster and possibly more accurate results with real-time consultations. The integration of digital tools has streamlined operations and enhanced the clinic’s ability to provide timely and effective care.

Telemedicine, while still emerging in her practice, offers potential benefits but requires consideration. “What I see emerging is the expectation of owners to receive WhatsApp services where they often message with descriptions of conditions or pictures and videos and then expect treatment advice,” Dr. Thompson explains. “Though this works sometimes, remuneration from it has to be carefully worked out. Truthfully, the best diagnosis is from a hands-on examination in a clinic setting or on a house call (home visit).”

PROFESSIONAL ADVICE

Dr. Thompson offers valuable advice to those considering a career in veterinary medicine. “Do it because you love it, not just to qualify as a doctor,” she advises. She emphasizes the demanding nature of the profession and the importance of passion and dedication. For those looking to start their own practice, she stresses the importance of careful planning, proper structure, and professional support. “Location can make or break your practice. Study practice management and consider getting a mentor,” she suggests.

FUTURE GOALS

Creature Care is deeply involved in community outreach, supporting the Animal Welfare Network’s low-cost spay and neuter program and various rescue efforts. Dr. Thompson emphasizes the importance of client/public education to address common misconceptions about pet health. “A big part of my job is client education to assist those who are genuinely ignorant or misunderstand pet care,” she says. She advocates for responsible pet ownership and proper veterinary care, highlighting the dangers of treating pets like humans, using non-prescribed medications and pets being “treated” by non-veterinarians.

Looking ahead, Dr. Thompson has ambitious plans for Creature Care. “My goal is to become a fully equipped veterinary hospital that can handle all emergencies,” she reveals. She also envisions expanding into consultancy services both locally and abroad, educating the youth, who are the future, especially regarding a healthy respect for animals, and launching an online store and fully engaging e-commerce, by God’s grace and will.

Dr. Nadin Grant-Thompson’s journey in veterinary medicine showcases her passion, dedication, and resilience. She has consistently prioritized animal welfare and client education, and as she continues to expand her clinic’s capabilities and community outreach, her impact on the field of veterinary medicine and animal care will continue to grow.

Raised in Brunswick, GA, Dr. McKinzie now resides in Cumming, GA. She is a proud single mother to her beloved daughter, McKinzie Alise Baker, whom she considers her greatest gift from God. Her story of resilience, empowerment, and philanthropy serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can make on countless lives.

LEADERSHIP AND PHILANTHROPY

“Growing up in a small town, there were limited avenues outside of the church that focused on empowering girls and women. There was a dearth of creative platforms emphasizing the significance of being a

young lady, and the importance of selflove and self-care,” she states. Her painful experiences fueled her determination to create an organization that would fill these gaps and inspire greatness among women and girls.

While her upbringing didn’t directly shape her leadership style, Dr. McKinzie’s early experiences in the corporate world were pivotal. “I discovered that the pursuit of growth and empowerment in the workplace can be fiercely competitive,” she states. Facing numerous obstacles, including discrimination based on her educational background, she resolved to lead with empathy and fairness and acknowledge people’s achievements when they are due.”

Dr. McKinzie’s philanthropic spirit, however, was deeply influenced by her mother and grandmother. “My grandmother was always volunteering to help

in the church and giving food to others and visiting those that were sick and shut in. My mom inherited those tools by watching my grandmother and I in turn picked up those amazing tools through what I watched and learned from them as strong women of God.”

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THRIVEHER, INC.

The story behind the founding of ThriveHER, Inc., which was previously under Women of Virtue Transitional Foundation, is deeply personal and rooted in Dr. McKinzie’s experiences. “As a second-generation survivor of abuse, I, Sonya McKinzie, founded ThriveHER, Inc. in 2016,” she recalls. Witnessing her mother’s abuse and later finding herself in a similar situation was a harrowing journey that ultimately guided her towards a mission of kindness, care, and concern for others. “Overcoming my own experiences of abuse filled me

WE PRIORITIZE THE CREATION OF A SAFE SPACE. THIS IS AN ESSENTIAL ENVIRONMENT FOR SURVIVORS TO HEAL FROM THEIR TRAUMA, OFFERING A SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY OF INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE SHARED SIMILAR EXPERIENCES.

with gratitude, and I felt a powerful urge to give back. I viewed the creation of ThriveHER, Inc. as an opportunity to express my thankfulness to God and to reach out to assist others in similar situations.”

ThriveHER, Inc. offers a wide range of programs designed to support and empower women and girls affected by abuse. “Our organization offers coaching services in the area of career, life, and trauma,” Dr. McKinzie explains. “We mentor girls and women that have been affected by abuse, provide referral services to support victims of abuse, offer shelter, and funding for essential needs like childcare and transportation. We empower them with the tools needed to leave their situation, and host workshops to help rebuild confidence in these women and girls.” Additionally, their annual brunch and fundraiser support affected individuals by supplying toys and food during the holidays.

One particularly touching program is “Remembering the Elders,” which was created in memory of Dr. McKinzie’s late grandmother. “Through this program, we grant 20-25 angel tree wishes for senior citizens in the nursing home or senior citizens that are homebound in the Brunswick area. My mother also hand makes lap throws for them to keep them warm so that they feel loved.”

ThriveHER, Inc’s approach to coaching and mentoring is holistic and supportive. “We prioritize the creation of a Safe Space. This is an essential environment for survivors to heal from their trauma, offering a supportive community of individuals who have shared similar experiences,” Dr. McKinzie explains. The organization provides both individual and group mentorship, addressing the

long-term effects of domestic violence and empowering survivors through education, skill-building, and personal development activities.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

“Building and growing ThriveHER, Inc. has not been without challenges,” Dr. McKinzie states. “Like many nonprofit organizations, our primary challenges have been funding and finding board members that are committed to the purpose and cause. We are still working on overcoming these obstacles by working towards bringing a greater awareness of who we are and seeking resources that will support our cause financially.” Despite these hurdles, Dr. McKinzie’s dedication remains steadfast.

PERSONAL INSIGHTS

For women looking to start their own nonprofit or social enterprise, Dr. McKinzie offers valuable advice. “Embarking on the journey of starting a nonprofit can be thrilling, yet intricate and daunting. It’s essential to pause and consider all

the elements that need to be established before launch,” she advises. “Key considerations include thorough research, solid foundation-building, and careful planning of the board composition. Understanding the legal and tax implications, strategizing fundraising, and figuring out ways to involve the community are also crucial.”

FUTURE INITIATIVES

Dr. McKinzie envisions a bright future for ThriveHER, Inc. “The long-term vision I have for ThriveHER involves its evolution into a profit-making entity that offers life coaching and consulting services,” she reveals. This expansion, under the banner of ThriveHER Movement Coaching and Consulting, is anticipated to launch in 2025. “My goal is to eventually oversee both organizations on a full-time basis.”

She is also in the process of launching The Blueprint of a ThriveHER, a collective work of women who’ve experienced trauma and reclaimed their voices. “This

marks my debut as a visionary, adding to my repertoire of 13 authored and 9 collaborative books. Additionally, I plan to explore further opportunities in the media sector.”

AWARDS AND MEDIA

Dr. McKinzie’s dedication to her work has earned her numerous accolades, including:

l 2019 – Georgia Single Parent Legacy Builders Award Recipient from the National Leadership Group, Inc.

l June 2024 – Honorary Doctorate in Humanitarianism.

l April 2020 – Single Parent of the Year Legacy Award.

Dr. Adama Kalokoh

BRIDGING CULTURES AND CHANGING LIVES THROUGH IMPACT SIERRA LEONE

Where compassion meets leadership, Dr. Adama Kalokoh, the Executive Director of Impact Sierra Leone, emerges as a remarkable figure, embodying dedication, resilience, and vision. She is a global humanitarian, a passionate advocate for the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and a celebrated leader in women’s empowerment. Dr. Kalokoh’s multifaceted career also includes the roles of a Chairperson with the Global Goodwill Ambassadors Foundation (GGAF), motivational speaker, and author. She recently received a 2023 US Presidential Lifetime Achievement award for volunteer services at the 5th Edition of the Jacobs-Abbey Global Institute for Leadership Studies Annual awards ceremony. Her previous accolade as one of the Most Distinguished Women Change Makers in Africa for 2020-2021 by City Scope Africa underscores her influential role in driving positive change across the continent.

Dr. Kalokoh’s deep-rooted passion for helping others was nurtured by her parents, James I. Conteh and Harriett Memuna Sesay, and further fueled by her four-year tenure in the U.S. Air Force. Her academic pursuit at the University of the District of Columbia, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Education, set the foundation for her leadership and advocacy work. Distinguished as a Thurgood Marshall Scholarship recipient, Dr. Kalokoh’s early commitment to public health and community service was evident during her AmeriCorps Promise Fellowship, where she made significant impacts in the DC area. Dr. Kalokoh’s story is one of relentless impact, positioning her as a powerful catalyst for transformative change.

HERITAGE AND PASSION

Born and raised in Washington D.C., USA, to Sierra Leonean parents who migrated to the United States in the late 1970s, Dr. Kalokoh’s upbringing was steeped in the rich cultural heritage of Sierra Leone. “I am the second of five siblings,” Dr. Kalokoh shares, “and we

were raised in a loving-African home environment. I have been making a difference in people’s lives in Sierra Leone for more than 20 years.”

The journey that led Dr. Kalokoh to humanitarian work was both personal and profound. “The death of my father in 1997 was a pivotal moment for me. It made me realize that Africa is my home, and I needed to honor his memory by making a tangible impact there,” she reveals. This realization spurred her first trip to Sierra Leone in 2003, a visit that crystallized her purpose. “My life was forever changed, and my true purpose was born. I am a proven example that when you connect your roots, your culture, and your passion, your true purpose is born. I had to remember who I was, to dive into what was inside of me, therefore becoming the true woman leader I was destined to become. My status as a first generation West African positioned me with having unique skills to be a leader in international development.”

IMPACT SIERRA LEONE

In 2019, after years of involvement with various nonprofit organizations, Dr. Kalokoh took a bold step to establish Impact Sierra Leone. “After letting go of my fear of failure and learning so much about the Nonprofit sector, I launched Impact Sierra Leone so I could better serve communities at greater capacities,” she explains. “I hope that my efforts will inspire other descendants of Africa to embrace their culture and positively impact their home country.”

The purpose of Impact Sierra Leone is to empower, educate, and enrich the lives of underprivileged communities

around the globe. Impact Sierra Leone operates under the framework of the United Nation’s SDG program and uses it as the overarching umbrella to direct its programs and efforts.

“Our focus is on the reduction of socioeconomic challenges in Sierra Leone and beyond through empowerment, education, skills training, sustainable agriculture and building strong partnerships with the Diaspora community. Impact Sierra Leone is supporting careers, encouraging education, fulfilling dreams, and addressing the following SDGs in Sierra Leone: No Poverty. Zero Hunger. Quality Education. Gender Equality. I’m delighted to use my position and voice to help people. To fight hunger, deal with food insecurity, promote economic development, and lessen poverty in underprivileged communities, we developed and launched a program called Seeds of Life in 2021.”

HUMANITARIAN PROJECTS

Since its inception, Impact Sierra Leone has undertaken numerous projects that have significantly impacted the lives of Sierra Leoneans. “Since 2004, I have worked to get more than 40 barrels of supplies, including clothing, shoes, food, school supplies, and medical equipment, transported to different communities in Sierra Leone,” Dr. Kalokoh shares. These efforts have benefited orphans, widows, farmers, and other disadvantaged groups, embodying her motto: “Born in the US, nurtured in Africa.”

“The Seeds of Life initiative was launched because we identified a significant problem with school feeding in rural schools and sought to address it by empowering local farmers and enhancing food security,” she explains. “The program has expanded into six core areas which includes a women’s wellness and farm collaborative that promotes gender equality. Every month, we support the rural community of Foindu Village, enabling children to plant and grow a variety of fruits and vegetables thanks to donations and collaborations.

Foindu Village, located in the Northern region of Sierra Leone, with over 450

residents, has seen a remarkable transformation. “We’ve helped establish three more farming areas, provided monthly stipends to 25 volunteers, and organized regular workshops on agriculture, health, and wellness. The results speak for themselves: increased food availability, improved household income, and better access to essential nutrients.”

POWER OF PARTNERSHIPS

Dr. Kalokoh emphasizes that partnerships and collaborations are crucial to

the success of her work. “There is so much power in collaboration. It brings skill sets, experiences, and ideas to the table, and strengthens our capacity, boosts potential for growth, increases ability for sustainability, and opens doors to world’s unknown to make a lasting impact,” she asserts.

“Currently, we are partnering with the Family Agriculture Resource Management Services (F.A.R.M.S.) monthly to provide the school children in Foindu

with fruits and vegetables which has boosted school attendance and their nutrition intake,” says Dr. Kalokoh. “This has been a three-year partnership which has improved the lives of many children. We are also partnering with the Global Goodwill Ambassadors Foundation to provide wellness materials for the school children. We have a new partnership with the Conteh-Brown Consulting Group to establish an empowerment enrichment program for the Foindu community.”

MAINTAINING RESILIENCE

Despite the successes, Dr. Kalokoh’s journey has not been without challenges. Balancing her roles as a single mother, full-time professional, and leader of a nongovernmental organization (NGO) has required exceptional organizational skills and resilience. “Running an international NGO from the US and communicating with my team virtually can be challenging. Most of our activities are self-funded, and we are constantly seeking grants to expand our services,” she says. However, her passion for helping others keeps her motivated.

“I decided to develop a weekly wellness routine which includes walking regularly, lifting weights and doing weekly motivational videos. This has been one of my effective means of defeating burnout and extreme fatigue. Being a prior member of the United States Air Force was my first preparation for working well under pressure. I try at all costs to maintain a positive attitude and communicate professionally. By maintaining this routine, it helps my mindset to be prepared to handle high-pressure situations.”

ENDURING LEGACY

From being honored as the Yonibana Brand Ambassador to receiving the Nina L. Meyerhof Leadership Award in 2021, Dr. Kalokoh’s enduring legacy is marked by a string of remarkable achievements. Recognized as the 2019 Yoni Excellence Diasporan of the Year and a Global Goodwill Ambassador, she has left an indelible mark on both Sierra Leone and the United States. Driven by a profound sense of purpose, she has seamlessly integrated her philanthropic endeavors

with her professional achievements, earning her a place among the Top 100 Recognized Human Rights Defenders by the United Nations. Her remarkable journey, punctuated by numerous awards and recognitions, serves as an inspiration to aspiring changemakers worldwide.

Dr. Kalokoh’s indomitable spirit extends beyond accolades, as she actively engages with communities to effect tangible change. Her role in organizing successful fundraising events in the Washington, D.C. area, in collaboration with community and church organizations, showcases her ability to mobilize resources for meaningful causes. Further, Dr. Kalokoh is dedicated to inspiring the next generation of humanitarians. Her advice is grounded in passion and purpose. “Find a cause that is dear to your heart and develop a mission, vision, and purpose around it. Volunteer locally, seek connections, and use social media for good. Transform your thinking, know your value, and use your voice to make a difference.” She also emphasizes the importance of mentorship, skill enhancement, and positive thinking.

LOOKING AHEAD

The future holds ambitious plans for Dr. Kalokoh and Impact Sierra Leone. “I hope to continue serving humanity through my missionary work, but I’d like to expand our business operations by:

l Launching several other projects that promote literacy, public health, enhanced education, empowerment, mentorship, and more that will bring lasting solutions to poverty issues.

l Growing Impact Sierra Leone into a global brand that will transform the lives of many. Building on the Seeds of Life initiative, we are in the process of implementing a school feeding program, renovating the school, and starting a literacy program that will benefit the students and women of the community. We will also be launching a skills training program for young women and girls soon. We plan to develop empowerment centers in rural areas where the people can learn skills like sewing, craftwork, and technology.

l Collaborating with other Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and International Development Partners to empower women and take Impact Sierra Leone to the next level.

l Expanding the Seeds of Life Program, our signature program to other locations.

l Purchasing land to grow a robust farm and launch a skills development program for women and girls.

l Obtaining a master’s in international policy and development. I want to launch a youth mentorship program that will also have a virtual component where youths in Sierra Leone can connect with youths in the US.

Further developing Foindu Village and expanding to other communities:

l Build a modern school for the children

l Launch an agriculture training center

l Launch an enrichment entrepreneur program

l Launch a mini farmer’s market

l Expand crops to include spices, peppers, herbs, yams, rice, fonio, moringa, cocoa, and beans.

l Launch a partnership with a village clinic to grow cassava leaves for the new mothers and infants.”

For those inspired by her story and looking to support her mission, Dr. Kalokoh invites everyone to join her in making a difference. “Impact Sierra Leone is now an official partner with Global Giving. Please support our project, Vocational Training for Women Farmers. Together, we can help build a brighter future for Sierra Leone and beyond.”

ST. MONICA’S HOME FOR CHILDREN

A VICTORIOUS BY DESIGN CHARITABLE INITIATIVE

Victorious By Design (VBD) is committed to supporting communities and organizations that are aligned with our mission of empowering and fostering the sustainable development of individuals. We believe in the power of community, the importance of giving back, and making a tangible difference in the world. We are proud to support St. Monica’s Home for Children as our charity partner. Together, we will make a positive impact in the lives of these children and provide them with the opportunities they deserve.

ABOUT THE HOME

Located about one mile from the rural town of Chapelton in Jamaica, St. Monica’s

Home for Children is a co-educational facility that has been serving children since its opening in 1953. It provides care for children aged four to 18 years. The facility is currently home to 15 children but has the capacity to house 30 girls and 10 boys. Boys are relocated to another facility at age 13, ensuring they receive age-appropriate care and support.

The home is managed by the Anglican Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands and operates under the jurisdiction of the state-owned Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA).

TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT

The impact of the Home on the lives of

the children it serves cannot be overstated. For many of these children, the Home represents the first stable environment they have known. It is a place where they can feel safe, loved, and valued. The dedicated staff at the home work tirelessly to create a sense of family and community for the children. They focus on the holistic development of each child, helping them to heal and grow.

Education is a cornerstone of the Home’s mission. The children attend local schools and receive additional tutoring and support to help them succeed academically. This focus on education ensures that they are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to build

a brighter future. Additionally, the home offers various extracurricular activities, including sports, arts, and vocational training, allowing the children to explore their interests and talents.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Over the last 2-3 years, major refurbishment costing over forty million Jamaican Dollars (approximately US$266,000) was carried out at the home to make the facilities water-tight, comfortable, and modern. The Home receives financial support from the Government of Jamaica. Notwithstanding the Government’s support, the Home is now faced with the challenge of sustainability and needs financial assistance to adequately care for these very vulnerable and disadvantaged children.

To become sustainable, the main areas of focus are:

l Acquiring adequate staff.

l Installing security equipment.

l Construction of a guard house.

l Replacement of small, high maintenance car.

l Construction of a chicken house and hatchery.

BOOK 1: THE CATCH NO ONE WANTS

The series kicks off with The CATCH No One Wants, a compelling tale that delves into the lives of individuals who find themselves entangled in relationships that are not only unfulfilling but also damaging. Through vivid characters and relatable scenarios, Dr. Bagby illuminates the often-overlooked red flags and the emotional toll of staying with the wrong person. This book is a poignant reminder that self-worth and healthy boundaries are essential in any relationship.

BOOK 2: THE WRONG CATCH

In The WRONG CATCH, Bagby continues to unravel the complexities of romantic entanglements. This installment focuses on the deceptive allure of unsuitable partners. The narrative is both a cautionary tale and a guide to recognizing and rejecting the wrong catches in our lives.

enriches her storytelling but also makes the intricacies of relationship dynamics more accessible and relatable.

“This is my first Christian Contemporary Fiction, which allowed me to share Biblical principles without being preachy and would appeal to even those unfamiliar with scripture—whether in the church or outside,” says Dr. Bagby. “After 30+ years of watching the patterns of the dating culture, marriage and singles, as well as, joining my pastor/husband during pre-marriage and marriage counseling, I wondered why couples forced themselves to marry a person who was not their match or remain in one with the wrong person.”

BOOK 3: THE WRONG CATCH - SHE’LL TEAR DOWN THE HOUSE

The third book in the series, The WRONG CATCH – She’ll Tear Down the House, takes a closer look at the impact of a toxic partner within a household. Through the experiences of her characters, Dr. Bagby shows the ripple effects of a wrong match on family dynamics and personal well-being. This book serves as a powerful testament to the importance of choosing partners wisely and the far-reaching consequences of those choices.

BOOK 4: THE CATCHBOOK OF FOOLS

The CATCH - Book of Fools, the latest addition to the series, brings a fresh perspective on the foolishness of ignoring wisdom and red flags in relationships. Dr. Bagby uses her narrative to highlight the often ignored or dismissed signs that can lead to heartache. This book is a call to embrace wisdom and discernment in the pursuit of love.

The Burlocks

NURTURING NATURAL HAIR WITH DIVINE INSPIRATION

In the heart of the Burlock household, nestled somewhere between strands of love and the tight-knit bonds of family, three remarkable women—Shelia Burlock, Sylvia Burlock, and Melissa Burlock—have embarked on a transformative journey to spiritually heal the hair hurt experienced by women of African descent. Their shared vision materialized into the book My Divine Natural Hair: Inspiration &

Tips to Love & Care for Your Crown, a powerful guide intertwining faith and natural hair care.

As a mother-daughter writing trio, the Burlocks have always enjoyed a close relationship. However, the process of writing this book brought them even closer, uniting them in a common goal. “We have always had a close mother-daughter-sister relationship, and working as

new authors has allowed each of us to grow in our friendship and unity,” Shelia shares. “Encouraging each other through the writing process has been invaluable. We’re proud of our unique perspectives and how our individual hair stories, braided together into one book, will prayerfully uplift and encourage women and girls to find community along their own natural hair journey.”

MEET THE BURLOCKS

Shelia Burlock served as an elementary school principal in urban and rural schools and has held various leadership roles in public education over the past thirty years. She holds a master’s degree in education with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction from Indiana Wesleyan University. She has a bachelor’s degree in human resources and Family Studies/Child Development from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is a recipient of the Excellence in Educational Leadership Award from the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Beta Lambda Chapter (December 11, 2010).

Sylvia Burlock is a high school English teacher. She is the creator and owner of Beautifēk, an organic lipstick line that inspires women of all skin tones to embrace their unique beauty as God’s masterpieces. Sylvia has a bachelor’s degree in English with a concentration in Creative Writing from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and a master’s degree in education from Marian University.

Melissa Burlock has held roles in institutional advancement, donor stewardship, and publishing. Her work has appeared in Salon and Black Nerd Problems. She has a bachelor’s degree from Winston-Salem State University and a master’s degree in public history from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

A JOURNEY OF FAITH AND HAIR

The inspiration for the Burlocks’ book began with a personal challenge. Melissa was diagnosed with central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA), a condition that can lead to permanent hair loss.

This diagnosis became a catalyst for the Burlocks. “We walked that journey with her, praying for her hair self-esteem and developing natural hair care recipes to treat scalp inflammation,” Shelia explains. “That journey resulted in My Divine Natural Hair.”

Their book stands out not only for its practical advice on natural hair care but also for its unique spiritual perspective. “There are many books written about Black hair love but few, if any, about intersecting faith and hair,” Melissa states. “My Divine Natural Hair touches the spiritual roots of natural hair and was born out of a deep belief that God loves and designed our hair.”

INSPIRATION AND PURPOSE

The act of writing has always been deeply personal for the Burlocks. Shelia, quoting Anne Lamott’s book Bird by Bird, reflected, “The act of writing turns out to be its own reward.” For her, writing is a ministry, a way to connect and uplift others. Melissa, on the other hand, finds inspiration in storytelling. “My writing is my witness, my creative outlet, my talent as outlined in St. Matthew 25:15. God gifted me to use to glorify Him and honor the women of faith who came before me,” she says.

One of the most significant impacts of My Divine Natural Hair is its message of self-acceptance and divine beauty. The Burlocks hope readers will walk away feeling encouraged and equipped. “Encouraged because they know their hair is God-created and thus divine,” Sylvia emphasizes. “Equipped because they will have read hair care tips and advice that they can put into practice. Your hair is fearfully and wondrously made

THERE ARE MANY BOOKS WRITTEN ABOUT BLACK HAIR LOVE BUT FEW, IF ANY, ABOUT INTERSECTING FAITH AND HAIR,” MELISSA STATES. “MY DIVINE NATURAL HAIR TOUCHES THE SPIRITUAL ROOTS OF NATURAL HAIR AND WAS BORN OUT OF A DEEP BELIEF THAT GOD LOVES AND DESIGNED OUR HAIR.

FUTURE ENDEAVORS

PRACTICAL WISDOM

My Divine Natural Hair is filled with practical wisdom for natural hair care, focusing on both internal and external factors. “Many times, when people try to grow their natural hair, they focus on which products to use,” Sylvia states. “While types of products are important, other things such as styling practices, diet, exercise, age, and other varying health issues or genetics also come into play.”

The Burlocks recommends using products made with natural or organic ingredients.

“Use a wide-tooth comb, wash and condition hair regularly, establish a hair care routine, clean satin bonnets and scarves used for sleeping, and ditch styles that are damaging to hair like tight braids or habitual heat styling.”

One of their favorite do-it-yourself hair care recipes is a Greek yogurt deep conditioner. “It’s easy, fast, and provides your hair with moisture and protein,” Melissa explains. “Plus, Greek yogurt can be found at a local grocery store.” They also recommend experimenting with oils like safflower oil, sunflower oil, or grapeseed oil, which can be found at local grocery stores.

The Burlocks are far from finished with their literary journey. Shelia is currently working on a children’s picture book about loving your God-given hair texture, set to be published in 2026. Sylvia plans to continue supporting her mother’s and sister’s next projects, while Melissa is querying her historical fiction novel.

THRIVING THROUGH CHALLENGES “We thrive during challenging times by having a strong sense of self-worth and value, a healthy self-esteem, mentally and emotionally, and a confident demeanor,” Shelia reveals. “A unique understanding of where our fulfillment comes from, which is knowing the love of God, also helps. He gives us the courage to live life boldly to impact others for good.”

Their advice to aspiring authors is “Set aside 5-10 minutes a day to write. This daily practice will keep your writing skills polished and surrendered to God.” The Burlocks journey, steeped in faith and familial bonds, serves as an inspiration to all, demonstrating that beauty truly begins with belief—in oneself and in the divine craftsmanship of our Creator.

by God who says, I made you and it is good what I did.”

Alexis Taylor FROM CROSSROADS TO TRIUMPH

CEO, TAILORMADE LOCS

As the owner of TailorMade

Locs, Alexis Taylor has carved a unique niche in the loc community with her expertise and passion for helping clients embrace their natural beauty. Interestingly, Alexis’ journey into the world of cosmetology was far from conventional. Despite growing up around professional hairstylists, she initially pursued a career in customer service. It wasn’t until she reached a pivotal moment in her professional journey that she discovered her true calling.

Today, Alexis is celebrated as a leading minority business owner, dynamic entrepreneur, and expert loctician. In her interview with VBD Magazine, Alexis shares her inspiring journey, the challenges she faced in starting her business, her approach to staying updated with industry trends, and her vision for the future. Dive in to learn how Alexis turned a leap of faith into a flourishing business.

VBD: Share a glimpse into your journey and experiences that have shaped who you are today.

ALEXIS: Growing up, I never considered working as a cosmetologist or hairstylist. Ironically, my family had a professional hairstylist whose expertise included working with natural hair, weaves, relaxers, and the full spectrum of Black hair care. Despite this, it didn’t pique my interest at the time.

A few years ago, I found myself at a crossroads. My background was primarily in customer service, and while I valued those skills, I yearned for a change. I was ready to leave the traditional customer service role behind, but entrepreneurship was still a daunting idea.

VBD: What inspired you to start TailorMade Locs?

ALEXIS: At that pivotal moment, an opportunity to learn a new skill presented itself. I took a leap of faith and embraced it. I started working in an All-Loc salon, learning everything I could from my peers. Soon, I discovered a genuine passion for locs and the joy of making clients happy through excellent haircare.

Having a newborn son at the time, I wanted more flexibility to spend time with him. This inspired me to specialize in locs full-time and eventually start TailorMade Locs.

VBD: Tell us about the services that TailorMade Locs offers.

ALEXIS: TailorMade Locs provides a wide range of services, including:

l Retwist/Palm rolling

l Interlocking

l Crochet Maintenance

l Starter Loc Services

l Loc Detox

l Loc Repairs

l Loc Extensions

l Kid Services (four years old and up)

l Styling, and more.

VBD: How do you keep up with the latest trends and techniques in the hairdressing industry, specifically for locs?

ALEXIS: Techniques are constantly being invented and reinvented in the hair industry. One way that I stay informed of the latest techniques is through networking with other locticians. Because we are in the age of social media, I also learn a lot by watching videos shared on YouTube and other social media platforms. I am a visual learner, and the multimedia aspect of digital technologies is helpful.

VBD: What is the most rewarding aspect of working with your clients?

ALEXIS: The most rewarding part of working with my clients is constantly meeting new people. I learn about individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures. I need to build rapport and create a safe space, which creates a healthy bond between the client and me as the loctician.

VBD: What were some of your biggest challenges when starting your business?

ALEXIS: Becoming your own boss has its ups and downs. My biggest challenge when starting my own business was navigating the business arena. It is challenging but fulfilling to see the fruits of my hard work. Also, there is a constant need to learn more about the marketing aspect of business to attract and retain clients.

VBD: How do you educate your clients about maintaining their locs and natural hair?

ALEXIS: I like to educate my clients on their locs, so I make sure I stay educated. When a client receives starter locs, at the end of the service, I provide them with a guide that explains “How To” care for and maintain the locs until their next visit. I also create information sheets with recurring questions. Those allow my clients another resource and reference document.

VBD: Is TailorMade Locs involved in any community initiatives or events?

ALEXIS: TailorMade Locs is planning its first community event, a back-toschool event for all grade levels, from kindergarten students to collegiates. We will provide kids with discounted retwists and free styling.

VBD: What are some common misconceptions about locs that you’d like to address?

ALEXIS: A huge misconception about locs is that people, especially women, feel that you are limited in what you can do with your hair when sporting locs. Locs are versatile; you can wear braids, add hair extensions, don a wig, and more. New techniques are constantly evolving.

VBD: What tips would you give someone who is considering starting their loc journey?

ALEXIS: Just do it! Many people are apprehensive about starting because of how they may look, and no one ever wants to go through what we call the “ugly phase.” That phase, which occurs when you first get your locs, is also different for everyone. It depends on the method with which you started your locs. In the long run, starting your locs can lead to a beautiful and re-

I TOOK A LEAP OF FAITH AND EMBRACED IT. I STARTED WORKING IN AN ALL-LOC SALON, LEARNING EVERYTHING I COULD FROM MY PEERS. SOON, I DISCOVERED A GENUINE PASSION FOR LOCS AND THE JOY OF MAKING CLIENTS HAPPY THROUGH EXCELLENT HAIRCARE.

warding journey of self-love and cultural appreciation; I say embrace it.

VBD: How do you make sure you thrive during challenging times?

ALEXIS: I stay active on social media, post my work regularly, and create holiday specials and incentives to attract new clients.

VBD: What’s next for you?

ALEXIS: My upcoming plans for TailorMade Locs include expanding my services. I would like to add braiding services as a protective style to cover locs, simple wig installations, braid downs, and facials. Long-term, I am interested in owning my own building or suite. I would like to create a VIP experience

for all my clients by providing water, coffee, wine, beer, snacks, a play area for clients with children who cannot have sitters, and so much more.

My next goal is to become a celebrity loctician and full-time entrepreneur. I am also exploring creating a product line for locs and natural hair. Lastly, I plan on starting a nonprofit organization for adolescent girls. This organization will implement programs to guide our young women of the future. I want to let young girls know we have many options. Some of us just need to have someone else believe in our dreams.

The Journey Of A Vessel

As I reflect on my newly released anthology and devotional, The Women of the Waiting Room: Surgery For Your Soul, I am filled with gratitude for the vision that God has given me. It is this divine inspiration that has led me to embrace the title of “The Vessel.” Join me as I share the remarkable story behind the selection of six incredible women for the anthology, the purpose of the devotional, and the impact I hope to create through this project.

THE VISION: INSPIRING IMPACT

This project is a testament to the vision that God has placed within me. It is a calling to inspire and create a profound impact. With every word written, every story shared, and every page turned, we hope to ignite a spark of hope and faith within the hearts of readers. Our aim is to remind women everywhere that God is present in their waiting rooms, offering peace, strength, and guidance. The release of this anthology and devotional in June 2024 is a milestone in our journey towards empowering women and fostering a deeper connection with God.

THE ANTHOLOGY: A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

The anthology features personal stories from seven women exploring themes of faith, resilience, and transformation during challenging times. Each woman’s narrative highlights the emotional and spiritual growth experienced in life’s metaphorical waiting rooms, emphasizing trust in God’s timing and the healing power of faith. This anthology serves as a source of inspiration and a testament to the strength of the human spirit. It invites readers on a journey of self-discovery and healing, demonstrating how personal struggles can lead to profound personal growth and a deeper connection with one’s faith

THE FAB 7: A TEAM OF DESTINY

Within the pages of the anthology, you will find the stories of LaQuita Parks, a co-author and the publisher behind PaProVi Publishing. LaQuita’s unwavering dedication and passion for empowering others make her an integral part of our

team. Dr. Velma Bagby, Carolyn Gentry Coleman, Dr. AudreyAnn Moses, Melanie “The Voice” Johnson, and Theresa Dorsey, all remarkable individuals, were brought together through the serendipitous encounter in a Clubhouse room called “The Bookslam.” We affectionately refer to ourselves as the Fab 7, symbolizing the completeness of our collective strength and purpose. There are also features from phenomenal women which includes a foreword from Prophetess Michele Brown, PR Guru Dr Nakita Davis, and an inspirational endorsement from my friend and powerhouse Gospel Comedian and retired Music Executive Pat G’Orge Walker.

THE DEVOTIONAL: A PATHWAY TO TESTIMONY

In creating the devotional, my intention was to provide an opportunity for individuals who may not have been able to financially afford the anthology to still share their testimonies of God’s presence in their waiting rooms. It also offered the 31 women (Including Pat G’Orge Walker- Gospel Comedian and Award winning author who writes a magnificent foreword) featured within the devotional a platform to dedicate a page in their own unique way. Through expressions such as dissertations, poetry, positive affirmations, and more, these women aim to uplift and inspire readers, forging a deeper connection with God.

Together, we aspire to bring women from all corners of the globe closer to God.

SUMMERTIME

Summertime is the best time

It’s a time to be happy, a time to be sad

A time to rejoice, a time to grieve

A time to build, a time to tear down

A time to be strong, a time to be weak

A time to whisper, a time to scream

A time to laugh, a time to cry

A time to unite, a time to divide

A time to learn, a time to teach

A time to open, a time to close

A time to remember, a time to forget

A time to be loud, a time to be quiet

A time to be first, a time to be last

A time to be empty, a time to be full

A time to find, a time to lose

A time to follow, a time to lead

A time to ignore, a time to notice

A time to increase, a time to reduce

A time for rain, a time for sun

A time to love, and a time to hate

Summertime is the best time

No matter the situation, you can turn it around

EMBRACING YOUR DIVINE

GIFT OF CREATIVITY

Today, let’s delve into the profound connection between spirituality and creativity. Every one of you have been tagged by heaven and sent to earth with a wonderful assignment. Each of us carry a divine spark within, a unique gift bestowed upon us by our Creator. This gift often manifests as creativity, a powerful force that allows us to express our inner selves and connect with the world around us in meaningful ways. Sometimes, this is the very reason people feel less fulfilled; they have not embraced their creative gift.

The first step in embracing your divine gift is to recognize it. Many of us underestimate our abilities, thinking creativity is reserved for artists, writers, or musicians. But creativity is not limited to the arts. It can be found in problem-solving, innovative thinking, and the way we approach our daily lives. Whether you’re crafting a story, designing a garden, cooking a meal, or finding new solutions at work, your creativity is a reflection of the divine within you.

Creativity is closely linked to our spiritual well-being. When we nurture our spiritual connection, we open ourselves to divine inspiration. This can be achieved through various practices such as prayer, meditation, or simply spending time in nature. These moments of stillness and reflection allow us to tune into the whispers of the Spirit, guiding our creative endeavors.

Creativity is not always a linear process. There are moments of flow, where ideas pour out effortlessly, and there are times when we feel blocked and uninspired. Trusting the divine process means understanding that both these states are part of the journey. A time to work and a time to rest. I think Ecclesiastes 3 says it all, as well as show us that there is a time for everything. So, embrace the periods of rest and reflection as they prepare you for the bursts of creativity to come. Remember, even the Creator took a day of rest!

Genesis 2 says, “By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all

his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.”

One of the most beautiful aspects of creativity is its ability to connect us with others. When we share our creative works, we invite others into our world, offering them a glimpse of our soul. This act of sharing can be incredibly fulfilling and is often where we see the impact of our gifts. Whether it’s through a piece of art, a heartfelt blog post, or a beautifully arranged garden, your creativity can inspire and uplift those around you. The joy you bring to others is often the inspiration we need to keep our creative works in motion. However, I can definitely testify to getting overwhelmed because it doesn’t seem like the benefits of the gift are flowing, but no worries, I have just the right method to offer you.

To keep your creative spirit alive, seek out sources of inspiration. This could be reading books that resonate with you, listening to music that moves your soul, surrounding yourself with nature’s beauty or with others God have created. Yes, you should engage with other creatives! Share ideas, talk out the things that come across your mind, and encourage each other. Inspiration is all around us, and sometimes a simple change in perspective can reignite our creative flame.

Embracing your divine gift of creativity is a journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth. Recognize your unique talents, nurture your spiritual connection, trust the process, share your creations, and stay inspired. Your creativity is a divine gift meant to be celebrated and shared with the world. Let it shine brightly, reflecting the beauty of the Creator who endowed it to you.
