Spousal Support and Alimony Divorce can be a very tricky and difficult situation for both parties involved. There are a lot of legal battles and situations to walk your way through before you can truly say that you are separated from your ex partner. Things are sometimes not that simple however. Money is a big part of why some people hesitate to divorce their partners – they feel they are not financially stable enough to make it out on their own, especially if they know that they will most likely be the ones taking care of the children (if there are any that is). Money problems do not end after the divorce either – hence why people can never really shake the connection to their ex partners.

Money is still a separate issue after people divorce as their needs to be a platform of support financially for the ex spouse who needs it the most – usually the ex spouse who then has to take responsibility for the children if they exist. It can be a hard situation for any person to have to ask for money to make ends meet from anyone, let alone an estranged partner.

However, sometimes these situations are unavoidable. You are entitled to money after a divorce.

What some people do not know is that there are different types of support out there financially speaking that serve different purposes and it can be hard to know which ones you are entitled to after your divorce. Most people do not know that there are differences between spousal support and alimony. This article will aim to educate the general public on the differences between the two and to detail what they both really mean.

Alimony is when one ex partner sends money to the other during the midst of the divorce proceedings and possibly even after the divorce has been finalized. The amount of money paid to the ex spouse will be determined by the courts and possibly even by the lawyers out with the court room. The money will go out to the person from the marriage who earned the least amount of money and naturally the money will also go to the person that will be rearing the children, if there are any involved in the situation. Another type of alimony is allocated to a partner if their marriage was long term and they were unable to work due to disabilities, either mental or physical or if they have other responsibilities that prevent them from working, such as carer responsibilities or if they were looking after children.

The big difference between alimony and spousal support is actually non-existent. They mean the same thing – alimony used to be called spousal support. This is where the confusion can come in.

However, there are different types of alimony, which have been listed here which can also confuse people when they are filing for different types of money or trying to figure out exactly what they are entitled to after their divorce.
