Mothers deserve Gratitude

A tribute to mothers

M

others are the foundation of our society. Without them, our mere existence as individuals, or civilizations- is unattainable. Hindu scriptures have dutifully preached 'Matru Devo Bhava', meaning Revere your Mother as God. This isn't just a hollow sentiment.

A look into Indian mythology gets us acquainted with strong matriarchial figures like Kunti, Gandhari, and others. Indian history has taken pride in women like Rani of Jhansi, Capt Laxmi Bai, and Jijabai- mother of Chhatrapati Sivaji.

Kasturba is one of the most prominent women of the last century. All these women, are not only regarded for being mothers, they are honoured for their devotion and for nurturing hope, confidence, valour and other values in their offsprings even in the most challenging circumstances. I know so many mothers, who have singularly contributed so much not only to their families, but to the society. Take Hirabaa, mother of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, or Shantaba, in whose honour the pharmaceutical majors Vijay Patel and Bhikhu Patel established the Shantaba Foundation which actively participates in humanitarian causes in the UK, East Africa, and India.

I'm privileged to have met so many mothers, all illustrious. Let me take the liberty to mention some by names; Kamlabaa Kansagra, Bilqis Banu Noon, Merlyn Vaz, Taraben Bhogilal Mehta, Vilmaben I.K. Patel, Mata Gian Kaur Bhamra, and Prabhavatiba Jobanputra.

As times changes so do the roles of Motherhood.

Present day life has placed some added responsibilities on mothers. They are expected to multi-task and maintain a fine balance between managing their house, and their work. While in the older times, mothers were regarded as the main source of values and guidance, today, along with being friends, philosopher, and guide to their children, they also strive for the progress of the entire family. There is no doubt, that our Naari Shakti, especially mothers, play an important role in the progress here in UK, India, and everywhere.

Times have changed, and so have the position of women in the society. Back then, soon-to-be life part-

ners, met for the first time at their own wedding, the decision made for them by families; couples now initiate, taking the first step to understand each other and their life preferences. This change in itself has pushed current-day mothers to the forefront of the society. Based on my personal experiences, I can vouch that mothers- even in most diresome situations, always rise to the occasion. Take Nita Ambani, for example. Out of her three children, her son Akash Ambani, was known to suffer from health issues citing obesity. However, after a strict dietary regime, he has now transformed himself into a fit, young gentleman.

All credit goes to Nita Ambani. When someone asked about the radical change in her son, she said she knew he needed to diet, and decided that instead of just preaching, she should herself practice and support him. "I feel happy, he looks happy," a glowing Nita answered. This, is a prominent example of modern-day mothers. They have a more approachable and practical way of showing how much they care for their children. Mothers selflessly do so much and more. It is always desirable to show our gratitude to them.

I'm privileged that yet another unique initiative has been taken up by ABPL, the Matru Vandana event, and a special magazine. I am grateful to all those who contribute in different ways, especially those who reached out to us, and shared with us their most intimate feelings towards their mothers.

I bow my head, and offer my deepest respects to all the mothers; married, widowed, separated, single, young, and old, of all creed and background, for their sacrifices, compassion, dignity, grace, and forgiveness.

Without you Mothers, we won't be here, and without your sacrifices and support, we won't be where we are today.

માતાઓ તો સદા સવવદા પૂજનીય છે

માતાઓ આપણા સમાજનો આધાર અને પાયો છે. તેમના વિના તો એક વ્યવિ તરીકે આપણું અથિા સભ્યતાઓનું અસ્તતત્િ અસંભિ છે. વિન્દુ શાતત્રોમાં તો માતાની ગવરમાનું મવિમાગાન કરતા તપષ્ટ ઉપદેશ અપાયો જ છેકે ‘માતૃ દેિો ભિ’. માતાને ભગિાનનું તથાન આપો. આ કોઈ ઉપરછકલી લાગણી નથી.

ભારતીય પુરાણોમાં ડોકકયું કરીએ તો, કુંતી, ગાંધારી તેમજ અન્ય શવિશાળી માતાઓ વિશે જાણકારી મળશે. ભારતીય ઈવતિાસમાં ઝાંસીની રાણી, કેપ્ટન લક્ષ્મીબાઈ અને છત્રપવત વશિાજી મિારાજની માતા જીજાબાઈ, જેિી નારીઓનું ગૌરિગાન કરાયુંછે. ગત સદીમાંપણ કતતુરબાએ સૌથી અગ્રણી નારીઓમાં તથાન શોભાવ્યું છે. આ બધી નારીઓને માત્ર તત્રી િોિાના કારણે સન્માન પ્રાપ્ત થયું નથી. તેમના સમપપણ અને પોતાના સંતાનોમાંસૌથી પડકારરુપ પવરસ્તથવતઓમાંપણ આશા, આત્મવિશ્વાસ, શૌયપ તથા અન્ય મૂકયોના જતનની જે તાલીમ આપી તેમાટેતેમનુંસન્માન કરાય છે. હુંએિી ઘણી માતાઓને જાણું છું, જેમણે એકલા િાથે પોતાના પવરિારને જ નવિ, સમગ્ર સમાજનેવ્યાપક પ્રદાન કયુ​ુંછે. િડા પ્રધાન નરેન્દ્ર મોદીની માતા િીરાબાનો જ દાખલો લો અથિા શાંતાબાની િાત કરીએ, જેમના માનમાં ફામાપતયુવટકલ ક્ષેત્રના માંધાતા બંધુઓ ભીખુભાઈ અને વિજયભાઈ પટેલે શાંતાબા ફાઉન્ડેશનની તથાપના કરી છે. આ ફાઉન્ડેશન યુકે, ઈતટ આવિકા અને ભારતમાં ઉમદા માનિીય િેતુઓ માટેસવિય કામગીરી બજાિી રહ્યુંછે. મનેતો ઘણી બધી યશતિી અનેનામાંકકત માતાઓનેમળિાનું સૌભાગ્ય સાંપડ્યુંછે. કેટલીક માતાઓનો નામોકલેખ કરિાની છૂટ હુંલઉં છુંઃકમલાબા કણસાગરા, વબસ્કકસ બાનુનૂન, મરલીન િાઝ, તારાબિેન ભોગીલાલ મિેતા, વિમલાબિેન આઈ.કે. પટેલ, માતા ગ્યાનકૌર ભામરા અનેપ્રભાિતીબા જોબનપુત્રા. જેિાંસુપાત્રોની સુિાસ પામી રહ્યો છું. સમય બદલાય છે તેની સાથે માતૃત્િની ભૂવમકાઓ પણ બદલાય છે. િતપમાન જીિનમાંમાતાની જિાબદારીઓ અનેકગણી િધી છે. િ​િેતો તેઓ અનેક કાયોપકરેતેમજ સાથોસાથ નોકરીધંધા સંભાળિાની િચ્ચે પવરિારમાં સમતુલા સાધે તેિી અપેક્ષા રાખિામાં આિે છે. જૂના સમયમાં માતાઓને મૂકયો અને માગપદશપનના પ્રેરણાસ્રોત તરીકે ઓળખિામાં આિતી િતી ત્યારે આજેમાતા સંતાનો માટેવમત્ર, કફલોસોફર અનેમાગપદશપક બની રિેિા સાથે સમગ્ર પવરિારની પ્રગવત માટે સતત પ્રયત્નશીલ રિે છે. એમાં કોઈ જ શંકા નથી કે આપણી નારીશવિ અને ખાસ કરીને માતાઓ અિીં યુકેમાં તેમજ ભારત અને દરેક તથળે પ્રગવતમાંમિત્ત્િપૂણપભૂવમકા ભજિેછે. સમય બદલાયો છે અને તેની સાથે સમાજમાં તત્રીનું તથાન4

મોભો પણ બદલાયો છે. જૂના સમયમાં તો જીિનસાથી બનિાના િોય તે યુિક-યુિતી પોતાના લગ્નના માયરામાંજ પિેલી િખત મળતા િતા, તેમના માટેનો વનણપય તેમના પવરિારો કરતા િતા. િ​િેતો ભાવિ દંપતી ખુદ આગેિાની લેછે, એકબીજાનેઅનેજીિનની પ્રાથવમકતાઓને સમજિા પ્રથમ પગલું માંડે છે. આ પવરિતપને જ િતપમાન માતાઓનેસમાજમાંમોખરેલાિી દીધી છે. મારા અંગત અનુભિોના આધારેહુંવનઃશકં પણે કિી શકું કે માતાઓ સૌથી નાજુક કે મુશ્કેલ સંજોગોનો પણ સામનો કરિા િંમેશા સજ્જ રિે છે. નીતા અંબાણીનું જ ઉદાિરણ લઈએ. તેમના ત્રણ સંતાનમાંથી દીકરા આકાશ અંબાણીને મેદતિીતાથી સજાપતી આરોગ્ય સમતયાઓ િતી. આમ છતાં, કડક આિાર વનયમનો થકી િ​િેતેતિતથ યુિાન બની ગયો છે. આનો તમામ યશ નીતા અંબાણીને જાય છે. જ્યારે કોઈએ તેમના દીકરા આકાશ અંબાણીમાંઆિેલા આમૂલ પવરિતપન વિશેતેમનેપૂછ્યુંતો તેમણે કહ્યુંકેતેણેડાયેટ પર કંટ્રોલ લાિ​િાની જરૂર છેતેની મનેખબર િતી. દીકરાનેમાત્ર ઉપદેશ આપિાના બદલેજાતેજ તેનો અમલ કરિા અને તેને સપોટટ આપિા વનણપય કયોપ િતો. ચમકતાં ચિેરે નીતાએ ઉત્તર િાળ્યો િતો,‘હું ખુશ છું, તે ખુશ દેખાય છે.’ આધુવનક માતાનું આ શ્રેષ્ઠ ઉદાિરણ છે. પોતાના બાળકો પ્રત્યે કેિી લાગણી ધરાિે છે તે દશાપિ​િાનો આ િધુ અવભગમ્ય અને વ્યિ​િારુ માગપ છે. માતાઓ વનઃતિાથપ ભાિે જ આટલું બધું અને તેથી પણ િધુ કરતી રિે છે. આપણે સહુ તેમના પ્રત્યે કૃતજ્ઞતા દશાપિીએ તેિંમેશાંઈચ્છનીય છે, આિકારદાયી છે.

મારું આ સૌભાગ્ય છે કે ABPL દ્વારા િધુ એક સરાિનીય અને અનોખી પિેલ ‘માતૃિંદના’ કાયપિમ અને વિશેષ મેગેવઝન તિરુપેકરિામાંઆિી છે. વિવિધ પ્રકારેતેમાંપ્રદાન કરનારા બધા જ મિાનુભાિો અનેખાસ કરીનેપોતાની માતાઓ વિશેઅપ્રવતમ લાગણીને િાચા આપિા આગળ આિી તેમાં અમને સિભાગી બનાિનારાનો વિશેષ આભારી છું. હું તમામ ધમપ-સંપ્રદાય અને પશ્ચાદભૂ ધરાિતી તમામ માતાઓ, પરીવણત, વિધિા, અલગ રિેતી, વસંગલ, યુિાન કેવૃદ્ધ માતાઓનેતેમના બવલદાન, કરુણા, માન-મયાપદા, સદ્ભાિના અને ક્ષમાશીલતા બદલ નમન કરુંછું. માતાઓ વિના તો આપણેઅિીં ન િોત અનેતેમનાંબવલદાનો વિના આપણેઆજેજ્યાંપિોંચ્યા છીએ ત્યાંન િોત. ઓમ નમઃ શિવાય સી.બી. પટેલ પ્રકાિક/ તંત્રી, ગુજરાત સમાચાર, એશિયન વોઈસ

- Lord Navnit Dholakia, OBE Recently I had the privilege to arrange a talk by Sharad Rao in the Lords. He is the former Director of Public Prosecutions and Chairman of the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board in Kenya. His subject was Indian Dukawallas of Kenya. To a large audience of dignitaries, Sharad Rao traced the early migration of Indians into East Africa. It was a moving contribution and to many of us it brought back memories of our early days there. The event was very special to me because it gave me the wonderful opportunity to reflect on my upbringing in Tanzania.

Early life

Every Mothers Day in a quiet moment I reflect the contributions my parents made towards our development. We were then three brothers and three sisters.

Needless to say that there were no hospitals or regular medical checks in some of the small villages where we lived. My father was fully engrossed in his work in the Railways. It was my mother who regulated our lives.

The neighbours in the railway quarters were few and far. There was no local transport so come early evening we were all closeted around a paraffin lamp with mother producing an old copy of RAMAYANA and it fell on me to read aloud the few pages of the holy book. My mother never had any school education and could not read or write.

Years later I appeared on the BBC religious programme when Joan Bakewell asked me if this shaped my religious beliefs. The answer was no because I only read RAMAYANA because of extra pocket money that I received. However when I reflect on my past, it is clear that the values and beliefs I share with others had its origin in the way mother shaped our lives.

Mother's sacrifice

Each one of us can write volumes about the love and affection we received during our growing up process. I could never could find out why my mother was the last in the family to share our meals. Years later I discovered that she, like most mothers, would not eat until all her children were fed first. Not only that but even when any one of us was ill, she would give up some part of her meal until the recovery.

Ann and mother

Years later, and after a long period in England I decided to visit India where my parents had retired. There was the continuing talk of my marriage and my father was insistent that I should marry a local girl. At that time Ann and I were good friends and it was taken for granted that we would marry at some stage. I asked my parents if I could also bring Ann with me so that they could meet her. They agreed. Once they met Ann everything was forgotten. Mother took me to one side

and said that she would bless my marriage to Ann. From that day onwards the two of them became good friends and until her death Ann provided the health support which mother required. This was unique because in those days neither could communicate with the other but the sign language formed a common bond with each other.

After my father's death, Mother came to England and stayed with us for over a year. She missed all her friends in India. She longed for open spaces and the little garden she was used to in Bhavnagar. We took her back. She was back with neighbours and friends and the smile was back on her face. So what was her legacy to me.

Recalling with gratitude

She had all the virtues of Mother Teresa. She cared for young and old. From a small budget she managed the whole family. More importantly, in simple language she set out the values she held so dearly. That filters through all our family. It has also steered us with the concept of caring and honesty which even today has stood the test of time.

Shantabai is no different than millions of women who have enriched our lives. We are grateful and we thank them every day and particularly on the International Day for Women.

My mother Hansaben - a modern day Saraswati

- Lord Jitesh Gadhia Having recently celebrated International Women's Day, it occurred to me that our Hindu scriptures provide the first true example of gender balance. They give due prominence to the Tridevi of Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati. All three Goddesses being partners to the holy trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in creating, maintaining and regenerating the universe.

Trinity at home

I count myself highly fortunate to have a similar “domestic trinity” at home: my mother Hansaben, wife Angeli and daughter Priyana. What is more remarkable is that they match exactly the virtues of the Tridevi as spiritual guardians of knowledge, wealth and devotion respectively.

Mothers give up so much, so that their children can have so much. This is certainly true of my own mother who has made countless sacrifices so that both my brother, Ketan, and I could achieve our full potential.

Apart from their unconditional love, the most precious gift they impart is their wisdom and values. For my mother, Hansaben, this noble trait is very much part of her DNA, inherited from my maternal grandfather, Girdharlal Sangani, who served as Headmaster of the Aga Khan School and Chopra Secondary School in Mwanza, Tanzania. This inspired her to train as a Montessori teacher and she became one of the first qualified professionals in this innovative method of nursery education in East Africa.

Education and culture

Coming from a traditional family, there was always some debate with her parents about how best to balance a professional career with being a future homemaker.

Fortunately, my maternal grandmother, Rambhaben Sangani, was a social organiser par excellence who revelled in feeding people and advising family and friends about traditional customs and rituals. As a result, my mother benefitted from both the ying and yang of academic education and practical homemaking.

After our arrival in Britain from Uganda, my mother has continued to use these skills in a voluntary capacity - for over 40 years - to teach children at Sunday religious classes every week run by the Sathya Sai Organisation, known as Bal Vikas, which provides both Hindu and multi-faith education to thousands of children across the UK.

Hansaben - both Gita and Guru

Mahatma Gandhi said that: “the Gita is not only my Bible or my Koran, it is more than that - it is my mother.”

Similarly, a Guru in Hinduism occupies a special position.

Infact, there is no other tradition where Gurus are treated with such respect. For me, my mother Hansaben is both the Gita and Guru rolled into one - a truly modern day Saraswati.

Lord Jitesh Gadhia with mother Hansaben It is also interesting to note that the earliest known mention of Saraswati is in the Rig Veda, the oldest living scripture, which I used to take my oath of allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen when I was introduced to the House of Lords last September. It seems that I am blessed by Saraswati’s guiding light at every turn.

In the same way that my mother made sacrifices for her children, my wife is now totally devoted to raising our own children: Priyana and Dev. In time, I hope that my daughter will be blessed with this privilege too and so the circle of life, which our Hindu trinity symbolises, will come round once again. Mothers are truly eternal.

I would like to commend my longstanding mentor CB Patel and Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar for celebrating Matru Vandana in such a meaningful way, to coincide with Mother's Day. In doing so, I am delighted to make this contribution in the hope of being a worthy son, husband and father to the trio of women in my life.

hen my mother was born in 1919, the First World War had just come to a close. India was still a key part of the British Empire, the Jewel in the Crown and British Kings and Queens were crowned as Emperors and Empresses of India. She dreamed of a different world, one with less poverty, without squalor and education for everyone.

The Young Mother, Wife and Homemaker

She married young, at only 14 and had her first child shortly after her 17th birthday, she had already brought one life into the world and she was still a girl. She had a further seven children, and was eventually blessed with four boys and four girls. She raised these children as part of a tightly knit community in our village of Mandhali, relying on the support of aunts and cousins to raise a new family and run a household. She took on so many challenges while she was young, and I am drawn to the thoughts of how much pressure she must have taken on herself, to provide and be a successful mother, wife and homemaker.

My father spent more time out of the house than he did at home. He was a politician, a great man of words and a sort of freedom fighter in those end days of Empire. Later, when I grew, we became very close, and indeed he always delighted in talking to all his children, hearing what they had been doing, and what they thought about politics and the situation in India, but as a small child I think he was less sure on how to engage with us. P ioneer in starting a Girls’s School Maybe my mother thought she could have achieved more if she’d had a proper education or possibly, she as we all do, merely wanted her children to have a better life than her, but she envisaged a different world for her children, especially her daughters.

She had seen villages blighted by malnutrition and poverty as a child, and so she took the extraordinary step when my sister was four, of starting a small school in our village. While there had for many years been opportunities for boys to study, there was nowhere in Mandhali for a girl to learn. So she secured a small school room, hired a teacher from the next village to come and teach girls, and Bimla, my sister, was the first pupil. It was a great success and soon many of our friends and neighbours were

sending their girls too.

Making the real difference

After independence, and when I was only two years old, the new government of India accredited the school and took it over, so in 1949 we could boast official schools for both girls and boys. The school made a real difference to all of our lives, my sister was the first to matriculate and eventually went to university, followed by my other three sisters. My mother put such a value on learning and education it changed so many lives, Bimla trained to become a teacher and came back to Mandhali to teach another generation of girls, to change lives and make a difference, all because of the fire my mother lit in her.

My other three sisters also went into professional jobs, not the first women in India to work, but certainly pioneers. None of them married young, all after 22, my mother ensured that they knew the value of their learning and the responsibility they had to live the best lives they could.

At the time her vision would never have been seen as feminism or empowerment, but even today her message about a woman’s value is overlooked too widely around the world. She empowered me to become a Member of Parliament and I hope that I champion, in Parliament, some of the causes she spent so much time supporting. My mother was Mrs Ram Piary Sharma, and this is just one part of her story.

She has the Ear of God mum since. In fact, now some 40 years later, if my dad, doing a grumpy old man impression gets annoyed at her, he gets the same wrath from me as he showed me all those years ago.

Everyone says their mother is the best in the world. I don’t. I never have. I don’t need to. My cousins to this day call my mum, ‘mummy’. Her sisters tell me she is the best in the world. My relatives do. So I don’t need the unnecessary cliché.

A quirk of fate

My mum and I are not meant to be alive.

Our flight had a problem and had to make an emergency stop in Egypt. We were offloaded and a couple of days later a flight was found for us. Then just before take off we were told to get off because some other passengers, presumably more important, had our seats.

That plane never made it to London. I was a child.

My mom had no way of getting the message across to her family or my father’s. So for three days they waited, believing to have lost wife and only son, daughter and first grandchild.

Early childhood

“Mother is the name of God on the lips of a child,” is the saying. My father must have thought so. My earliest memory of my mum is when as a four year old child I was screaming at her from the back of a car. My dad was driving. I think I wanted to sit at the front in place of her. My dad abruptly stopped the car, some 100 yards or so from the house and told me to get out.

Yes, a four year old.

I think I’ve rarely shouted at or got annoyed at my 8

My upbringing was unusual. I left my parents at a young age. They took me to India from the UK when I was nine, so my father could start his business there.

After prolonged illness I returned a few months later, begging my parents to allow me to return to the UK. My heartbroken mother was left with no choice. I was a pretty strong willed 9-year old.

So it was that I was raised by my extended family. What would a psychologist make of that? Well it made me who I am. I never wanted my mother to feel any regret, so I worked relentlessly at school, because my child-like reasoning was that my mum would then see that the decision had a good outcome.

Extended family

All you need to know about my mother, I can tell you from this one story. She told me years later, when for years my extended family (or family as I call them!) had raised me, ‘you call your uncles and your aunties your parents, call them your father and your mother because they looked after you so well.’

On my wedding day, in my speech, I asked my wife not to change in any way. But I asked my wife to change me; to make me more like my mother – calm patient loyal and devoted.

So thank you CB for giving me this opportunity to say to my mother that I am a better man because of you. Every time something has angered me, you have centred me. Every time I have thought that the world is against me, I remember the words of a friend who told me, ‘Your mother has the ear of God; that is why you are so blessed’. When the weight of the world was on my shoulders, she told a simple truth, with a gentle voice, ‘They are not your troubles. Leave them at God’s feet in the Mandir. They are God’s troubles.’ And so it was. I am blessed.

ehind all your stories is always your mother’s story, because hers is where yours begin.

I imagine sometimes as a little baby up in the sky asking God, “Do I really have to go?”

Yes, my mum was an angel.

The memories of a loved one linger in our minds long after they are gone.

Today my mum is not around, but not forgotten. She is unseen, unheard but she is always near. I still love and miss her. My mum is forever in my heart.

Most people can only dream of seeing an angel, but I had the pleasure of living my whole life with one. I remember her every now and then. She is the star whom I look up in the sky. Mum, I miss you dearly.

I remember as a child when I come home from school, she takes my bag, asks ‘what happened in school’. As I run inside the house, she pulls my shoes, serves me home-cooked food. She put everyone’s happiness and well-being ahead of her own.

Above all, her ability to forgive just beggars all description.

These are not simple acts, these are life transforming acts. As a person she had a huge influence on me. All that I am I owe it to my angel mother.

My mother was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva.

She had a strong willpower and visited all the pilgrimage sites of Lord Shiva with her best friend Savitaben. At 69 she had a perfect full set of teeth to boast of.

Her good life, however, took an unexpected turn when she was admitted to a Middlesex hospital on July 16, 2012. Her blood samples showed some anomalies. Three days later she was transferred to Hammersmith Hospital.

I could see she was slowly losing her vitality and vigour.

During that period, I clearly remember, my mum told me and her best friends along with my father “that Lord Shiva and his consort Pravarti came to me last night and took me around the places where the Nataraj dwelled.”

Then suddenly regaining consciousness, she exclaimed, much to her dismay, “Oh! I am still in this hospital bed.”

By this time she could barely walk. In between all the check-ups Asmita masi (my mum’s youngest sister) came from Portsmouth to support me.

And one day the registrar of the hospital dropped the bombshell. He said mum had cancer growing from the back coming forward in two places, near her liver and

A Macmillan nurse had already spoken to my mother, if she wishes to go home or to hospice. She chose Kenton Hospice, knowing that my father would not be able to look after her.

She was shifted to Kenton Hospice on August 17, 2012. She was surrounded by friends and family members who came to visit her almost everyday. The nurses there, too, were true angels who looked after my mum so well.

She became very weak. On August 25, 2012, she whispered in my ear, “Lord Shiva is coming to collect me in 3 days.” The next day she had almost gone into a trance, not opening her eyes much. On the morning of August 28, 2012, she was gone for ever.

This experience showed us that there is something greater in life, much beyond this mundane existence.

My mother was the strongest woman I knew and she never failed to take anything life threw at her with a smile.

God called your name so gently that only you could hear No one heard the footsteps of the Angel drawing near Softly from the shadow there came a gentle call You closed your eyes and went to sleep and quietly left us all.

I would not have been able to look after my mother during her stay in hospital, if it wasn’t for my fantastic support from, my Husband, my sons, mother-in-law and family.

PARADISE LIES AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER

hese words greet all visitors to my late father, Lord Gulam Noon's office in St James. He had placed it under a bronze bust of his Mother, Bilqis.

With these endearing words that he felt for her, I can sum up the love, admiration, respect, tolerance, humanity, generosity and most importantly, the notion of charity that were ingrained in my father by my grandmother.

a A guiding light a She was a guiding light for him at so many levels that there were several references to her for resolving many of his life's experiences.

He had become close to her, from very early in his life. His father had died when he was very young and suddenly my grandmother had become the head of a very large extended family.

They had a fairly comfortable middle class from the confectionery business my grandfather had started in Mumbai.

But it fell on my father's teenage shoulders to take this forward.

Although he and his brothers went to school, he always mentioned that his real education was earned by listening and learning from his mother as she ran the family with a firm hand.

His early youth was partly spent in his father's home village of Sunel, where my grandmother felt very comfortable, although she was from Iran but had settled very well with my fathers family.

My father's early remembrance of those days were of the villagers coming up to his mother for help, advice and settlement of minor disputes!! She did this with a great sense of fairness as her respect grew among the villagers, my father was in awe of her managerial skills. a Effects of Partition a

In 1947, when India celebrated her independence, they were living in a family house in Bhawani Mandi.

India's partition resulted in the exodus of refugees under trying and unfortunate circumstances.

My father fondly recollected how his mother had seen many families comprising mostly women and small children living in the open fields without food or shelter. On questioning, she found out that they were Hindu refugees displaced due to the partition.

Without blinking an eyelid, his mother asked all of them to follow her. She gave shelter to them in the

I mention this as it is important to know that my father looked after his extended family throughout his life, donated to charities, helped the downtrodden, educated and set scholarships for the poor, built hospitals in his hometown; and all this was his mother's influence embodied in his character throughout his life. a Mother's influence and inspiration a He subsequently built the Noon hospital in Bhawani Mandi in the memory of his beloved mother and this was the greatest legacy that he left behind.

Regarding his success in his business, he shared his mother's advice. She advised him never to work for someone else but work hard to achieve success for himself, his family and importantly to also include his friends and extended family in his path to success!

I am proud to say that my father did exactly that.

His Mother's influence and blessings guided him along his life’s journey, even during his darkest times.

She always led him through to the bright sunshine and the colourful rainbow of success!

The strength, wisdom, fairness and tolerance that only a mother can provide definitely leads to the quote.

She was a true inspiration in everything he did in his lifetime.

ur loving Baa There is no one quite like a mother, the one that puts you before anyone else, the one that sacrifices her own pleasures for yours, the one that smiles when you smile, cries when you cry, laughs when you laugh.

It is our Baa, Diwaliben Hindocha, born in Tabora in Tanzania, who came to London as a widowed mother at the age of 38 to give the best opportunity a mother can give to her children.

Now at the young age of 92, Baa continues to shine her light from her cooking for her family, to her infectious laughter, to her delight in singing, to her pride and joy for her children, grandchildren, and her ten great grandchildren.

In her eyes, we are the same small children, who have reached all corners of the earth, thanks to her dreams, thanks to her ambitions for us all, thanks to her blessings and thanks to her hard work. Our eyes, mind and heart remain on Baa, the most precious woman who leads the head of the ship, and we thank her every day for her devotion, love and care, to which we remain indebted.

A mother’s love cannot be measured, rather a precious gem to be treasured. Happy Mother’s Day Baa.

It has been over seven years since my family lost the strongest person they knew, to a massive cardiac arrest. Not a single day has gone by since, without my mother crossing my mind. That is the thing about compelling people. They leave behind big footprints all over our memories. One of the two major female role models in my life- Seena Paniker, the one I called Mom, was known to be lively, loving, and unapologetically herself.

"What do you want to be when you grow up?" She asked me one day. "I don't know yet," an 8 year old me replied. "It is about time you thought long and hard about it." This is one of the many fresh memories I hold of her. She always pushed me. Sometimes over the brink. Yet now, when she isn't here, driving me to become the best version of myself, achieve, I realise the magnitude of her loss. She was the Woman of the house- and I say this with the best in-

tentions possible. Why can't women have it ALL? Mother did. A successful career, a happy family, and most importantly a bright future to look forward to.

A revered person in the society, she chose one of the noblest professions- the one of a Teacher. It was on her funeral day I witnessed just how many lives she touched. Students, fellow academicians, parents, all gathered to bid farewell, and there wasn't a single dry eye in the room. Years later, she is my biggest 12

blessing and, regret. So many things unsaid, so many conversations unhad. If I knew I only had so much time; the things I would have done for her. "She stood in the storm, and when the wind did not blow her way, she adjusted her sails". This is the line that can best sum up my Mother. Unknowingly feminist.

Not everyone has the luxury of being raised by not one, but two strong women. My mother left behind her scrappy children in the care of her elder sister.

The one her children called Mamma.

"What will I do now?" I remember asking my Aunt, the night she broke the unfortunate news. "Mamma's here." She didn't bat an eye as she took up a role nobody impelled her to. Ever since that day, my brother and I have always been introduced as Beena Paniker's children. Taking care of four children, two her own, wasn't an easy task.

She provided us all with the best of education, and life in a whole, all the while respecting the void her sister had left behind. Attending PTA meetings, entertaining our friends, fulfilling our self-obsessed demands. Mothers, are funny beings. Who in their right mind would put others before themselves?

As I said in the beginning, I have been blessed with two female role models. Both, who pulled their own weight. Both the best versions of themselves.

વદલને જીતી તો લેતાં જ સાથે સાથે વદલમાં િસી જતાં. ન્યારત્ન વિવિધ સ્િરૂપો ધારણ કરે છે - પુત્રી, ઉપકાર તો ન લેપણ સદા ઉપહાર આપેએિાં. પૌત્રી, માતા, સાસુ, દાદી, નાની, બહેન, નણંદ, અપશબ્દનુંતો નહીં નામવનશાન. પત્ની, પુત્રિધૂ, ભાભી, ફોઈ, મામી, માસી, કાકી બસ શબ્દેશબ્દેજય સ્િાવમનારાયણ. િગેરે... સેિા માંગેનહીં પણ ઉપરથી મેિા આપે. નારીના રૂપ અનેક હોય છે, પણ નારીત્િનું ન માવમિક કટાક્ષ કે ટકોર, બસ ધાવમિક આભૂષણ એક જ છે. િાતાિરણ રાખેચારેકોર. દીકરી, ડાંગરના રોપા જેિી હોય છે. ડાંગર જેમ ઘણી િહુઓ સાસુથી તોબા પોકારતી હોય છે, પણ બે ક્યારીમાં િારાફરતી ઊગે છે તેમ દીકરી પહેલાં અમેતો તેમનેબા તેબા કહીનેઘડી ઘડી સંભારીએ. વપયરમાંઉછરેછે, અનેપછી સાસરેઊભરેછે. આ જે ઘણી િહુઓ આંસુઓ પાડતી હોય છે અને પડાિતી િાત છે વ્રજકુંિરબાની - અમારા સાસુબાની - તેઓ હોય છે, પરંતુઅમેતો હરખનાંજ આંસુઓ અનુભવ્યા એક નહીં અનેક સ્િરૂપેઝળક્યા છે. અમારો, એમની છે. જેમનું બધી જ રીતે રહે જમાનું પાસું એિા હતાં સાથેનો સંબંધ સાસુ-િહુનો પરંતુ અમારે મન એ અમારા સાસુ. અમારે મન અમારા સાસુ-બા, મા સાસુ-બા હતાં. સગી જનેતાની આબેહૂબ ગરજ સારે તરીકે, િડીલ તરીકે, ગુરુ તરીકેઅનેસખી તરીકેપણ એિા હતાં. પોતાની સગી દીકરીઓની ખોટ નહોતી હતાં. વ્રજકુંિરબાનો રાજકુંિર બા જેિો દબદબો હતો. છતાંય એમણે પુત્રિધૂઓને પોતીકી કરી, અઢળક છતાંય પોતાની મોટાઈ દાબીને િતિનારા, અમારા વ્રજકુંવર બા હેત ઠાલિનાર એ જનેતા ખરેખર મહાન હતાં. સાસુ-બા એ બા જ હતા. બીજા બધા િગડાના િા. (૧૯૦૮ - ૧૯૮૪) જેમ, પુષ્પ સુગંધ જ આપે એમ અમારા સાસુબા જેમની નસેનસમાં સ્નેહની જ ગંગા િહેતી હોય અઢળક હેત જ િરસાિતાં. એમને મન તો સગપણ અનેદરેક શ્વાસ ‘સિવેસુખીનો ભિન્તુઃ’ જ કહેતો હોય એ વ્યવિ બીજી સ્નેહનુંજ સાચું. સત્સંગીઓ પણ આતમના સગાં, અનેતેથી જ સત્સંગ કોઈ ન હોય એ અમારા સાસુબા જ હોય. સમાજમાં‘માસી બા’ના હુલામણા નામેતેઅો પંકાયા હતાં. ચંદનની જેમ આિી પ્રેમ, ત્યાગ અનેસેિાની મૂવતિ દેહ ઘસીનેહરહંમેશ સુગંધ પ્રસરાિતા રહ્યાં. માની મમતાનુંતો કહેિુંજ અલગ જ થતી નથી અમ ઉરથી ન પડે, પરંતુ આિા સાસુ-બા જ્યારે અઢળક ઢળે ત્યારે માને પણ પ્રાથિના છેઅમારી પ્રભુનેશીશ નમાિી, ભૂલાિી દેએિી લીલા કેિી રીતેકળે! સહુની હો આિી જ સાસુબા, શ્રીજી સ્િામી.

Sweet Memories

I

have never been asked to write or speak openly about my late mother but when Cecil Soans of Asian Voice did exactly that, I felt that this was a special call for me to remember my dear mother.

We have all grown up in the care of our mothers and taken all that they have done for granted. It is as if we have a god- given right to expect her to cook for us, wash our clothes, be our nurse when we are unwell, help us with our school-work and be available whenever we call upon her for anything we want.

There is no one else in the world , be it our siblings, friends, children or friends who are as receptive and willing as our mother.

Selfless love

As we take our mothers for granted, we just do not notice and appreciate how much they care for us. Our childhood is so occupied with all the fun and games of growing up that when we try and recall how much they supported and cared for us, we draw a blank. When I try and recall how much my mother did for me I do not remember much. I have grown up amongst 6 other siblings and Baa was always around Pujya Gangama to feed and care for us. Never in her 83 years did she ever claim credit for all that she had done! This is pure selfless love!

As adults, perhaps, we can appreciate our mothers much more by observing how our grandmothers dealt with us and our wives deal with our children.

Grandmother’s influence

My grandmother, Gangama, lived 101 years over 3 continents and saw her third generation great grand children. She was not educated and had razor sharp memory. When my mother was busy, it was my Maa who played that beautiful role of making me learn about religion, charity and sincerity. She would ask me to visit her on Saturdays and read a prayer in Gujarati called Krishnashray path every time. She would praise 14

my reading of Gujarati and boost my confidence. Actually, my Gujarati was quite poor but she was one person who made me feel otherwise. I read the prayer so often that I learnt it by heart. I still recite it when I do my prayers each morning. She would often make me read religious books to her and show me all the photos. She would know what was on each page. Looking back, this was her way of laying the foundation of religion and spirituality in me. I remember that Maa kept a cotton pouch with multiple pockets. She collected money for various charities that she supported - each pocket for a particular charity. The pocket was not marked but she knew which pocket was for which charity. She asked me to count the money in each pocket and before I could say how much there was, she would tell me the figure! This was her way of making me understand money and learn counting, and it also introduced me to charitable giving. I was just a child at the time but those skills and principles have been embedded in me. When we were in India and my father was still in Uganda in the late 60s, she would ask me to write letters to my father from her. Maa was sending letters to her son written by her grandson. I still have those letters with me that my father had saved. So I learnt how to write letters and also about important messages and guidance that Maa gave to her son. Wow! such was her quiet but deep teaching and vision! Looking back I realise that when I thought I was doing a favour to my Maa, it was she who did me the favour! I can, even now, see that smiling, loving face just full of love and pride. Such is the effort of mothers to prepare us to face the challenges of life.

Maa was highly respected by all Kakira residents and many would make special arrangements to visit her and seek her blessings.

Multitasking mothers

When I look at how much my wife does for our children, I realise that my Baa will have done same for me.

Observing our wives dealing with our children is a good reminder of how our mothers will have dealt with us.

Mothers have the great ability of multi tasking. This is their special gift from the Almighty. No matter where the children are or what they are doing or what their concerns are, it is their mother who knows all about it.

They are a nerve centre and backbone of the whole family. The children can get away with their mischief and special demands by persuading their mother. It is the mother who will then convince the father who is often the person holding the cheque book!

A mother’s sacrifice

The mother will go to all lengths to cook the favourite meal for the son or daughter, which sometimes will not get eaten. I remember, once my wife

Rekha was travelling and I had to look after our two children. By the time I got them ready and took them to school and after school activities, I had no time left for myself. It was a tiresome week and I quickly realised how much a mother sacrifices for the children and yet is smiling all the time. They sacrifice their own agenda and replace it with their children’s. They epitomise unrestricted and selfless love for the children. When you want to witness selfless love, just take a look at the mothers attending to things for their children.

Baa’s spirituality

My Baa lived 83 years and outlived both her elder and younger sisters as well as two of her four brothers younger than her. She was a strong determined person. She would indulge in 2 to 3 hours each day of her time doing her prayers, fully dedicated as a Vaishnav.

Looking back, this gave her a strong sense of willpower which we witnessed in many other things that she did.

Baa was a positive thinker and this is a quality she has inculcated in us. There were occasions when it would seem that her time had come, yet she maintained her positive thoughts and bounced back full of life. When asked how she was feeling her common response was that she was fine and had no problems.

She would pray not for avoiding the pain and hurdles in her life, as she accepted the fate of karma, but for God to give her strength to face the pain and hurdles.

That was her principled living.

Baa loved her outings and would never be tired whenever we offered her to go somewhere. Her pet comment would be that she cannot get tired when she only had to sit in the car.

Spending quality time with mothers

There is one particular thing I would like share with readers. In her later years, I found it really worthwhile spending more time with her. In our busy lives, we get exhausted in the evening and easily forget to find time to spend with our elders. You may live under the same roof but you may not find that quality time to spend with them. It is your company that they are longing for.

Also, I feel it is very special to have our mothers' blessings. Any of the readers who have elderly parents should spend quality time with them. Their blessings are so very powerful. One must spend time with them in their twilight years as that is what they long for. Otherwise after they pass on, we will regret not having spent time with them. They also give us lots of wisdom and valuable advice. I tried and spent as much time as I could with Baa. It was my routine to touch her feet each time I saw her and seek her blessings. That really pleased her and I have no doubt that my success and happiness today is all because of her blessings.

Parental blessings are truly magical as these are given

Pujya Baa without any expectations.

Having spent time with her in her later years, I did not have any regrets when she passed away. I felt I had spent good time with her and it was time for us to release her soul and let her move on. The vacuum of her leaving us is now filled with her sweet memories.

I love you my Baa.

જગત જનની મા તુજનેવંદન વારંવાર

પૂજ્ય માણેક બા,

કોલેજમાંભણાિેલા એમના તરફથી િષાણસન આિતું. કોઈિાર મોડું થાય તો દાદાજી વચંતાતૂર થઈ જાય ત્યારે માણેકબા એમને ધીરજ યા દેવી સવવભૂતેષુમાતૃરૂપેણ સંસ્થિતા ધરિાનુંકહેતા કેઆિશે. ઈશ્વર મોટો છે, એ જ સહાય કરશેઅને નમથતથયૈનમથતથયૈનમથતથયૈનમો નમઃ બીજા જ વદિસેિષાણસન આવ્યુંજ હોય. પૂ. દાદાજી લખે છે, ‘રસાયણશાથિીના નાજુક િાજવાઓ મારી મા વવનતા બાની વિદાય પછી, મારા નાનીમાએ (પૂ. કરતાંવધારે સુકુમાર િાજવાઓ થિીની આંગળીઓનેટેરવેવસે છે.' એ અંગુલીઓમાંઉછરીનેબાળકનો પુરૂષ થાય છેઅનેપુરૂષનો માણેકબા ન્હાનાલાલ કવવ) અમનેભાઈ-બહેનોનેયશોદામાની જેમ િીર પાકે છે. માતાની હૂંફ, બહેનનું હાલરડું અને પત્નીની િત્સલ ગોદમાં લઈ ઊછેયા​ાં. મોટાં થયાં, સમજણાં થયાં ત્યાં સુધી અમને સુશ્રુષા દુવનયાના દેિમંવદરેદુલણભ છે. એક સમય એિો પણ આિેલો ખબર પડિા દીધી નહોતી કેઅમારી જન્મદાતા તો આ જગતમાંથી પૂ. દાદાજીનેકુટુંબસવહત જ્ઞાવત બહાર મૂકિા સમાજ વિચારી રહેલો. ક્યારની યે વિદાય લઈ ચૂકી છે! એમના પોતાના દીકરાઓ અને ત્યારેદાદાજીએ માણેકબાનેધીરજ ધરિા કહ્યું. કારણ માણેકબાના દીકરી હતાં તેમ છતાં અમારા પ્રત્યેનું એમનું વ્હાલ કાંઈક જુદા જ કોઈ દીકરા ત્યારે પરણ્યા નહોતા. ત્યારે દાદાજીએ કહેલું પ્રકારનુંહતું. મારો ભાઈ, ભાલુભાઈ શાળાએ જતાંરડતો. મારા મામા પરાણે બળજબરીથી એને સાયકલ પર કે, આપણને જ્ઞાવત બહારથી પણ કન્યાઓ મળી બેસાડી લઈ જતા ત્યારે માણેકબા અશ્રુભીની રહેશે. જોકે છેિટે બધા જ મામાઓે રાજકોટ, લાઠી, ધાંગધ્રા, જામનગર વિ. શહેરોમાંથી આંખે એમના દીકરા એટલે કે મારા મામાને પ્રવતવિત સંસ્કારી બ્રાહ્મણ કુટંુબની વિનંતી કરી કહેતાં, ‘ભઈ આજે એને કન્યાઓને પરણ્યા હતા. મારા માફ કર. જોને એને તાવ છે. કાલે માણેકબાએ એમની િહુઓ પ્રત્યે સદા વનશાળે લઈ જજે.’ અમ દીકરીઓને માતૃભાિ જ દાખવ્યો હતો. સૌની પણ િારંિાર કહેતા, ‘એિા થઈને પ્રસૂવતના સમયે કોઈ મામી વપયર જિાને રહીએ, કોઈ આપણી સામે આંગળી ન બદલે માણેકબા પાસે જ રહેતા. સાચું જ ચીંધી શકે.’ આ સલાહ તો હું જ્યારે કહ્યું છે, ‘જનની અને જન્મભૂવમ ૧૯૫૫માંઆવિકા ગઈ ત્યારેખૂબ યાદ થવગવિી પણ મહાન છે.’ મારા આિતી અને એના જોરે તલિારની મામીઓને પરણ્યા પછી વપયર કદી ધારે, હું સાંગોપાંગ અવણશુદ્ધ રહી સાંભયુાંજ નથી. શકી અને વશવિકા તરીકે નામના મેળિી શકી. પૂ. માણેકબા પર હવરકૃપા િરસી પૂ. માણેકબા પાસેથી ઘણુંશીખિા તેનું દૃષ્ટાંત જોઈએ. એકિાર મળ્યું. એમની સંપૂણણ સાદાઈ, યાત્રાળુઓનો સંઘ, બોટમાં દ્વાવરકાના દશણનેજતો હતો. એ સંઘમાંપૂ. માણેકબા ઈશ્વરશ્રદ્ધા, પત્નીવ્રતાપણું, ધીરજ, પણ જોડાયેલાં. ૧૯૧૩ની સાલમાં ત્યારે કરકસર િગેરે મુખ્ય છે. મારી માના આગગાડી નહોતી. કમનસીબે મંવદરમાં મૃત્યુપછી એમણેહંમેશા સફેદ - માત્ર બે પડદા બંધ હતા. મુવખયાજીએ દશણન માટે આંગળીની કકનારિાળા સાડલા પહેરેલા પડદો ખોલિાની ના પાડી. કહ્યું કે, ‘ટેરા એક મા સો વશક્ષકની ગરજ સારે એ આ ગયા!’ બધાએ ખૂબ વિનંતી કરી. કશું સાચુંજ કહેવાયુંછે. ના િળ્યું. ત્યાંઅચાનક પડદો પડ્યો અનેસૌને Motherમાંથી M કાઢી નાંખો- બીજા ા દશણન થયા. આને તમે અકસ્માત કહો કે બધા other જ રહેિાના. મા ની તોલે કોઈ ના પૂ. મ નીમ ા ા ણ ન ેક બ પરમાત્માની કૃપાઝડી િરસી એમ કહો. પૂ. દાદાજીએ આવે. મા તેમા બીજા વગડાના વા. ા, મનેઉછેરનાર મારી માણેકબાનેઅંજવલ આપતાંલખ્યુંછે. મારા દાદાજીએ (કવવશ્રી ન્હાનાલાલ) સરકારી નોકરીમાંથી રાજીનામું આપ્યા પછી, માત્ર સરસ્િતી દેિી આગળ ‘મારી વજંદગી કેરુંસુહાગી મધ્યવબંદુતું, પોતાનુંમસ્તક નમાવ્યુંછે. એમનો એ ઉત્તમોત્તમ બ્રાહ્મણ ગુણ હતો. અંધારી રાવિમાંમારી અમીનો પૂણવઈન્દુતું’ એ પછી એમની આવથણક મુશ્કેલી ઘણી િધેલી. માત્ર એમના પુસ્તકોના િેચાણમાંથી બહોળુંકુટંુબ વનભાિ​િાનુંહતું. માણેકબાએ મારા મોટામામાના લગ્નપ્રસંગે અમે લાઠી ગયેલા. માણેકબાએ એ ભાર સહ્યો હતો. કુટંુબનું પોષણ કેિી રીતે કરતાં એ તો મારી એમના દેરાણી શાંતાગૌરીને િરમા બનાિેલા. તેઓ સંતાનવિહોણાં કલ્પનાની બહારનો વિષય છે. રોજ સિારે અમારા ઘરના વિશાળ હોઈ એમને લ્હાિો આપ્યો. માણેકબા પ્રત્યેનો અણગમો કહો કે જે કમ્પાઉન્ડમાંઆંટો મારિા નીકળેઅનેપાછા િળતાંહાથમાંછાણનાં કાંઈ, શાંતાગૌરીએ કાળી બાંધણી પહેરીનેિરનેપોંખ્યા, એ સમયે પોદળાં લેતાં આિે. અમારે ત્યાં ન્હાિા માટે પાણી ગરમ કરિા, બહુ ઊહાપો થાય એ સ્િાભાવિક છે. દાદાજીએ સૌને શાંત પાડી બંબામાંકોલસાના છાણાંિપરાતાં. છાણ અનેકોલસાની ભૂકી ભેગી કહ્યું, ‘મેં મારા માિે કાળી જ ટોપી પહેરી છે. કશો વાંધો નહીં. કરી, ગોળ િાળીને સૂકિતા અને એ બળતણ માટે િાપરતા. પૂ. અમારુંકશુંખોટુંિવાનુંનિી.’ આમ મારા દાદાજી અનેમાણેકબા દાદાજીનું િષાણસન આિતું. એ િખતના રાજિીઓને રાજકુમાર એકબીજાના પૂરક થઈનેરહેતાં.

શિક્ષણ સાથેમાણેકબા એમનુંરસોડુંપણ સંભાળવાનુંકહેતાં. બધી રસોઈ આવડતી અનેહુંકરતી. દાદાજી પણ કહેતા, ‘માણેકબાની કોલેજ (એટલે રસોડું) પહેલાં પછી ગુજરાત કોલેજ.’ એટલે તો વાચકશમત્રો! હું પરણીને પટેલ કુટુંબમાં ગઈ તો પણ રસોઈમાં પારંગત હોઈ, સાસરીમાં મેં પ્રિંસા મેળવેલી. મારી નણંદો મારી પાસે ખાસ દહીંવડા અને અન્ય વાનગીઅો િીખવા આવતાં! મને તો મારી મા શવનતાબાના મા માણેકબા અને એમના પણ મા મોતીબાના સહવાસનો લાભ મળેલો! મારું કેટલું અહોભાગ્ય? એ જમાનામાંએટલેકેઆજથી લગભગ સો વષષપૂવવેમોતીબા એમના દીકરી માણેકબાનેઘરેઆવીનેરહેતાં. કહેતા કે‘મવણયો મારો દીકરો છે.' એ જમાનામાં દીકરીને ત્યાં એમની મા પાણી પણ ના પીતી! મને મોતીબા

િુક્રવારેગુજરીમાંલઈ જતા. એશલસશિજ પુલ વટાવી, છેક ત્રણ દરવાજે ગુજરી ભરાતી ત્યાં જતાં અને ચાલીને પાછા આવતાં. ત્યાંથી પહેલાં તો પીવાના પાણીનો માટીનો ગોળો ખરીદતાં એમાં ખરીદી કરેલી ચીજો મૂકાવતાં. ચાલીનેઆવીએ એટલેમનેબક્ષીસમાંથોડા કાજૂઅપાવે. પોતે મારી સાથેએવી જ સ્પીડથી ચાલે! એમનુંસ્વાસ્થ્ય ખૂબ તંદુરસ્ત હતું! આજેહાથ જોડી પૂ. માણેકબાનેનમન કરી કહુંકે... ‘સિવ કાંઈ દીધું આપે, ભેટ કરીએ શું બા? નમસ્કારની ભેટ કરીએ, જોડી અમારા બંને હાથ.’

પૂજ્ય વિનતા બા,

હૃદય દ્રવી જાય. સંઘશમત્રા નામના એમના પુસ્તકમાં પૂ. શવનતાને અંજશલ આપતાંલખ્યુંકે... ‘મને કહોને મારી મા કેિી હશે? ‘વદલની િાતો વદલમાં સમાિી તે, કેિી હશે ને શું કરતી હશે, મને કહોને.... મધુરી તારાં મધુરાં સ્મરણો શા શા સંભારું.’ સાસશરયામાંગમેતેટલી મુશ્કેલીઓ વેઠી હિેપણ કુટુંબ ખાતર માત્ર ભોગ આપી, શવદાય લીધી. પૂ. દાદાજી એમના માટે લખે છે, અમે ભાઈ અને બહેનો ઉપરની પંશિ ગાતાં કારણ કે મારા ‘આયવનારીઓનો એ સનાતન માગવ છે કે વિયજનોને ખાતર માતુશ્રી પૂ. વિનતાબાએ અમનેસાવ નાના મૂકીનેશવદાય લીધેલી. સંસાર દિમાં િજળી જિું.’ સમજણાંથયાં, મોટાંથયાંપછી જેકાંઈ નાનીમા પાસેથી એમના મારા શવનતા બા માટેપૂ. દાદાજી છેવટેએટલુંજ લખે શવિેજાણ્યુંતેપરથી આજેઆપ સૌ સમક્ષ મારી માનું છે, ‘અણભૂંસાતી સ્મરણ પગલી પાડી તમે અમ રેખાશચત્ર રજૂ કરું છું. એમાં કાંઈપણ ક્ષશત થઈ ઘેર, ભૂલકણાં અમે ભૂલી ભૂલી મંહી ગણશું તમ હોય તો પૂ. શવનતાબાની માફી માંગી લઉં છું. ગુણસેર.’ કશવ કુટુંબના સંસ્કારી વાતાવરણમાં આજે હું મારા શવનતાબાનો ફોટો જોઉં જન્મી, ઉછરી, સૌરાષ્ટ્રના એક નાનકડા ગામ થાનગઢમાં મારા વપતાશ્રી છુંત્યારેએમના તેજસ્વી મુખારશવંદમાંનરી સાદાઈ, સરળતા, સમતા અને મમતાનું કેશિલાલ દેિરામ દિે સાથે તેઅો મૂશતષમંત સ્વરૂપ દેખાય છે. આંખોમાં લગ્નગ્રંશથથી જોડાયેલા. આજથી ખાલીપો વતાષય છે. જગત જાણેમીરાંબાઈની લગભગ સો વષષ પહેલાંનું ગામડાનું જેમ ખારું લાગ્યું હોય એવો ભાવ જાગે છે. જીવન કેવંુ હિે એની કલ્પના સહજ એવી એ મારી વ્હાલસોયી માને લાખો થઈ િકે. રાંધણ માટેલાકડાના ચૂલે વંદન કરું છું. મારી માનું ઋણ હું ચૂકવી રસોઈ કરી હિે, માથે બેડાં લઈ િકું તેમ નથી. મારા દાદાજીએ એક તળાવેકપડાંધોવા ગઈ હિે, કૂવેથી ભાષણમાં ‘સ્િપ્નાં સાચાં પડ્યાં’ લખ્યું છે પાણી સીંચી લાવ્યાં હિે, ઘરમાં કે‘પરમાત્મા જો બીજો મનુષ્ય અિતાર છાણ-લીંપણની અોકળીઓ પાડી આપે તો એ જ માતાવપતા, એ જ સાફસૂફી કરી હિે અને સાથેસાથે ભાઈબહેન, એ જ સ્િજનો, વમત્રો એમના બાળુંડાઓને ઉછેરી, આપજે. આજે હું પણ પ્રાથુ​ું કે, હે કૃપાળુ સાચવ્યાંહિે. મારા નાનીમા કહેતા કે દેિ, એ જ મારી મા-વિનતાને ખોળે જન્મ શવનતાએ કોઈ શદવસ એની આપજે.’ મુશ્કેલીઓની કિી ફશરયાદ કરી નથી. માટેજ કશવ શ્રી બોટાદકરેકહ્યુંછેકે માંદા પડી શપયર આવેલા ત્યારે મીઠાં મધુને મીઠાં મેહુલા રે લોલ એકવાર તો મારા નાનાશ્રીએ એથી મીઠી રે મોરી માત રે (કવિશ્વર ન્હાનાલાલ) યમરાજાને ા જનનીની જોડ સખી નહીં જડે રે લોલ. હાકલ મારી પાછા વાળેલા. પણ જન્મ અને પૂ . ીમ ર ા મૃત્યુ એ મનુષ્યના હાથની વાત નથી જ. ખૂબ વિનત ા બા , રી મ મને જન્મ આપના - કાંતાબહેન િભાકાંત પટેલ, નાની વયે માત્ર ૨૮-૩૦ વષષની ઉંમરે એમણે શવદાય ઓકવુડ, લંડન લીધી. કશવશ્રી ન્હાનાલાલે (અમે એમને દાદાજી કહી બોલાવતા). એમની શ્રાદ્ધશતશથએ લખેલું કાવ્ય વાંચીએ તો આપણું

ફરી ફરીનેયાદ તમારી, એ જ અમારી ફરરયાદ છે

મેં જવાબદારી સંભાળી લીધી. માની સેવા કરવાનો લાભ મળ્યો. અમારા ઘરેલાવી સેવા કરી રહેલા ત્યાંડોક્ટરેઅમનેચેતવણી આપી. આ જબરદસ્ત ચેલશે જ છે. તમેપહેલાંજતાંરહેશો એના કરતાંહોમમાં ૧૯૩૫માંમારા પપતાશ્રી મપિભાઈ દેસાઈભાઈ પટેલ અનેમાતા મૂકો. પણ અમેતો નક્કી જ કયુ​ુંકેબાનેહોમમાંમૂકવા નથી. મેં માતુશ્રી પૂ. ચંચળબાનેએમના બનેવી કાશીભાઈ આશાભાઈ લોકમનુંકામ બંધ કયુ.ું આ રોગ ખૂબ જ કાળજી માંગી લે પટેલે આપિકા બોલાવેલા. કેશયા અને યુગાશડાની છે. પ્રેમ, કરુણા, દયા અનેસમજ રાખી, સમયનો ભોગ બોડડર પર આવેલંુ બુસીઆ ગામ સાવ પંદર વીસ આપવો પડે. એશઆરામનો ત્યાગ કરવો પડે. મારા ઘરોનુ.ં ત્યાં મારા પપતાશ્રી નાની દુકાન બાને આ રોગને કારણે કશું ભાન ન રહેત.ું ચલાવતા. ગામમાંબસ, ટ્રેન, પાણી, વીજળી ઘણીવાર ખૂબ પજવે, બૂમો પાડે, મારવા દોડે, કશું ના મળે! વરસાદનું પાણી મોટા ન કરવાનું કરી બેસ,ે ખવડાવતી વખતે પીપડામાંભેગુંકરી, વપરાશમાંલેવાતુ,ં વાતો કરાવી, હાથ પંપાળી જમાડવા પડે. છતાંયેએ જીવન સાદુંપણ સુખી હતુ.ં ઘણીવાર રાત્રેઊિી, પોતાના કપડાનુંપોટલું અમેચાર ભાઈઓ - બેબહેનો. મારો વાળીને ભારત જવા માટે મધરાતે દાદરો જશમ એ જ ગામમાં. મારા માતા-પપતા ઉતરવા માંડ.ે પેશાબ-ટોઈલેટનુંભાન ન રહે. પશસ્તની બાબતમાંખૂબ કડક હતા. હું બા માટે ઘરમાં નીચે જુદો રૂમ કરવાની તો બાપુજી ઘરમાંઆવેએટલેખાટલા વ્યવસ્થા પવચારી એ માટે કાઉન્શસલની નીચે જ ભરાઈ જતો! મારા બા રજા મેળવતાં મુશ્કેલી નડી પણ એ ચંચળબા નાસ્તો બનાવવામાં કુશળ વખતના લેબર એમ.પી. Mr. Stehen હતા. બુસીઆથી અમે ટરોરો ગયા Twiggની મદદથી મંજરૂ ી મળી. આ રીતે ત્યાં મારા બા ધાતુના ડબ્બાઓમાં અમારા ડોક્ટર, એમ.પી., સોપશયલ વકકર, પબસ્કીટ, ચેવડો, સેવ, ગાંપિયા, પડસ્ટ્રીક્ટ નસિ બધાયની સહાયથી બાને ચકરી, સેવમમરા હાથે બનાવી ભરી નીચેના ઓરડામાંશાંપત મળી. ન ચાલવાને રાખે. અહીં મારા પપતાશ્રી રીટેઈલ કારણે લોહીનું ભ્રમણ ઓછું થતાં પગે, પૂિં ે દુકાન ચલાવતા. બાપુજીને બાળકોના ફોલ્લાંનીકળ્યા નેપરુ વહેવા લાગ્યુ. નસિઆવે ઉછેર, પશક્ષણ ઉપરાંત ભારતમાંએમની નેપાટાપપંડી કરી જાય. જેપદવસનેના આવે બહેનોની પણ સંભાળ લેવાની હતી. મારા માતુશ્રી ચંચળબા બાપુજીને ત્યારેહુંએમના પગ સાફ કરતો. પેશાબ માટે દુકાનમાં જોઈતી મદદ કરતાં. કેથરેટ મૂકલ ે ુંતેપણ બદલાવતો. માનેએક દદદી પ ળ ૂ . મહેમાનોની આવ-જા ઘણી રહેતી. કોઈને મ ગણી આ બધું કરતાં મને ઘણો સંતોષ થતો. ચંચ ક ઈશ્વરનો આભાર માનતો- માની સેવા કરવાની તક ળબ ત જમાડ્યા પવના જવા ના દેતાં. બાપુજી ે ન ા, જ અમ એણેઆપી. કહેછેકે‘પજન માતા-પપતા કી સેવા કી, ઉન ેમની સ આપિકનોના કપડાં ગોમસી પણ સીવતા. અમારા ી ન ા ેવા કરવ ઘરની સામેસ્વાપમનારાયિનુંમંપદર હતુ.ં ત્યાંપણ જમણવાર તીરથ ગીયો ના ગીયો.’ અનેછેલ્લે૧ ઓક્ટોબર ૨૦૦૪ની સાલનો ગોઝારો પદવસ આવ્યો. હોય ત્યારેમારા બાનેરસોઈમાંમસાલો કરવા બોલાવે. માતા પપતાશ્રીની શ્રાદ્ધપતપથ હતી. બાએ પનરાંતેખાધુ,ં આરામથી સુતાં મારાંબા ધપમિષ્ઠ પણ ખૂબ. સાકપરયા સોમવાર, પનજિળા એકાદશી હતાં. મારા બેબહેનો ઇશદુબહેન અનેકુસમુ બહેન અમારા ઘરેહતાં. કાયમ કરે. પરોપિયે વહેલા ઊિી, શહાઈ-ધોઈ પૂજાપાિ કયાિ પછી જ બીજા પદવસેઅમારેઘેર સત્સંગ હતો તેની તૈયારી કરવા આવેલાં. ત્યાં પનત્યકામમાં પોરવાતા. આ દેશમાં પિટન આવ્યા પછી મારા અચાનક બાનેઉધરસ ખાતાંસાંભળ્યાં. અમેએમની પાસેદોડી ગયા. પપતાશ્રીએ પવદાય લીધી. મારા માતુશ્રી સ્વતંત્ર રીતે વોડડન કંટ્રોલ છેલ્લા છએક મપહનાથી આંખો નહોતા ખોલતા પણ ત્યારેઆંખો ખોલી ફ્લેટમાં એકલા રહ્યા. પ્રત્યેક ધાપમિક પવિના પદવસે દરરોજ એકલાં સામેશ્રીનાથજીના ફોટા સામેજોઈ, આંખો બંધ કરી દીધી. બેસી ભજન ગાતાં. એ વખતેએમની આંખો અશ્રુભીની થયેલી મેંજોઈ હતી. પત્ની કાંતાએ ચંચળબાને સ્નૂકર, ટેપનસ, પિકેટ જેવી રમતો બા શ્રીજીના શરિેપસધાવ્યા. બરાબર સમજીનેજોતાંશીખવેલી, તેઅો હોંશથી જોતાં. તો પણ મારા "ગુજરાત સમાચાર"ના તંત્રી શ્રી સી. બી. પટેલ અનેમેનજી ેગ ં પપતાશ્રીની પવદાય પછી બાનેકહેતાંસાંભળેલાં, ‘પશરછત્ર જતાંજીવન એપિટર શ્રીમતી કોકકલાબહે ન અમારે ઘરે બાને જોવા આવે લ ા. મારુંઓપશયાળુંથઈ ગયુ.ં’ મેંઆંતરજ્ઞાપતમાંલગ્ન કયાિતેથી કેકોઈ જનતાની જાણ માટે આવા રોગથી જાગૃત કરવા ૨૦૦૩ની સાલમાં બીજા કારણે મારા માતુશ્રીનું વલણ અમારા પ્રત્યે જરા નાખુશ રહેતું ફેિઆ ુ રીના અંકમાંશ્રીમતી કોકકલાબહેનેએક સુદં ર લેખ લખેલો. તો પણ મનેસદાય વ્હાલથી ‘ભઈ’ કહી બોલાવતાં. કામ પડેયાદ કરી અમે એમના સદાયેઋણી છીએ. બોલાવે. એમની આંખોનો મોપતયો ઉતરાવ્યો ત્યારેઅમારેઘરેઆવી રહેલાંપણ સારવાર પૂરી થતાંકહેતાં‘ભઈ મનેહવેમારા ફ્લેટ પર || સવવેભવન્તુસુખીનઃ સવવેસંતુપનરામય! મૂકી આવ.’ પણ જતી વખતેખુશ થઈ આપશષ આપવાનુંચૂકતા નહીં. સવવે ભદ્રાપિ પચયન્તુમા કશ્ચચદ્ દુઃખ ભાગભવેત્ || એટલેતો કહ્યુંછેનેકે, ‘માનો એક જ આશીવાવદ જીવન સાથવક કરી દેછે.’

અનેક વિદ્યાથથીના જીિનમાંજનેતા થઇનેસંસ્કાર પૂવતિકરતા કાંતાબેન

આપણેબધાએ સૌ િથમ "મા" શબ્દ નોજ ઉચ્ચાર કયો​ોહશેએવું માનુ છું. જન્મ આપનાર એ મા કે જેણે જન્મ સાથે ઘણું કઈ આપ્યું, જેનું ઋણ આપણે હૃદયથી કબૂલવુ,ં યાદ રાખવુંઅનેજીવન કાળમાંયથાશવિ અદા કરવું એ આપણું બધાનું કતોવ્ય છે પણ સાથે ઋણ અદા કરવાનો ઘમંડ ના કરવો. જો "મા" શબ્દ આપણને એણે વરસાવેલ લાગણીયો યાદ કરાવે છે તો "વપતા" શબ્દ ઉચ્ચારતાંજ આપણને જીવનમાં વ્યવહાર ને જવાબદારીઓ યાદ આવેએ સ્વાભાવવક છે. એટલે જયારેહુંઆ "માતૃ િંદના" લેખ લખવા બેઠો ત્યારે િથમ તો મારા સદ્દગત માતા મુ. સરોજબેન અને સદ્દગત વપતા મુ. રોવિતભાઈ (પારેખ)ની યાદ આવે એ તો સ્વાભાવવક છે. પણ આજે હું એક એવી હયાત વ્યવિ માટે લખવા ઈચ્છું છું કે જેણે કદાચ અજાણતાંજ, પણ મારા જીવનના અનેક િસંગેનેતબ્બક્કેમા તૂલ્ય ભાગ ભજવ્યો છેઅનેએ છેમારા મુ. કાન્તુફોઇ એટલેકેશ્રીમતી કાંતાબેન પ્રભાકાંતભાઈ પટેલ. એક એવી માન્યતા િચવલત છે કે આપણા બધા સંબંધો ઈશ્વરવનવમોત છે. હું વવના સંકોચેકાન્તુફોઇનેએ માન્યતાના એક સરસ ઉદાહરણ તરીકે જોઉં છું. આજથી લગભગ પંચ્યાશી વષો​ો પહેલા અમદાિાદ મુકામે, ગુજરાતના મિા કવિ શ્રી ન્િાનાલાલ દલપતરામ એવલસબ્રીજ ટાઉનિોલની પાછળ, લાલશંકર ઉવમયાશંકરના બંગલામાંરિેતા િતા. તેમની પડોશમાંમારા દાદાજી કાંવતલાલ પારેખ રહેતા હતા. શ્રી ન્હાનાલાલના વવસ્તૃત કુટુંબમાં એમની દોવહત્રી કાંતાબેનનો પણ સમાવેશ થાય. નાનપણમાં એમણે માતા ગુમાવ્યા હતા એથી મોસાળમાં ઉછરી રહેલ કાંતાબેન માટે મારા સદ્દગત દાદી મુ. િીરાબેન માતૃ સ્થાને હશે. નાદુરૂસ્ત તવબયતને કારણે મારા દાદી તો નાની ઉમરમાંજ અવસાન પામ્યાં પણ મારા વપતાશ્રી રોવહતભાઈ અનેમુ. કાંતાબેનનો ભાઈ-બહેનનો સંબંધ કાયમ રહ્યો, પોતાના કુટુંબને આવથોક સહાય કરવા માટે કાંતાબેન વશવિકા તરીકેકમ્પાલા - યુગાન્ડા (આવિકા) ગયા પછી પણ એમનો અમારા કુટંુબ સાથેપત્ર વ્યવહાર કાયમ રહ્યો. જયારે તેઓ ભારત આવતા ત્યારે અમારું મળવાનું થતું. ત્યારબાદ અમે જયારેમુંબઈ ખાતેસ્થાયી થયા પછી તો તેમની દરેક મુલાકાત વખતે તેઓ અમારેત્યાંથોડા વદવસો રહેતા જેનેકારણેએમની આવિકાની માવહતી, ત્યાંથતા અનુભવો, વશિણ િથા, ત્યાંની વહન્દૂશાળાઓમાં ભજવાતા સાંસ્કૃવતક કાયોક્રમો વવષેઅમેઘણેઅંશેસમઝતા થયા. કાન્તુફોઇ પોતે એક આગિી પ્રવતભા ધરાિે છે અને તેથીજ બીજું જે મારે માટે વધુ મહત્વનું છે તે - એમને વારસામાં મળેલ, સ્વાનુભવેવધારેલ, એમના વવદ્યાથથીઓમાંવનસ્વાથથેપીરસેલ – એમની સાંસ્કૃવતક કળાની સમઝ. તેઅો ગુજરાતી સાવહત્ય, નાટ્ય, નૃત્ય તેમજ રાસ ગરબા વવષેની માત્ર સમજણ જ નથી ધરાવતા પણ એ સમજ એક વશવિકાના રૂપેએમણેએમના વવદ્યાથથીઓનેપણ આપી. એમના અનેક વવદ્યાથથી અનેવવદ્યાથથીનીઓનેમારેમળવાનુંથયુંછે, અથવા તો તેમણે કાંતાબેનને લખેલા પત્રો વાંચીને મને િવતવત થઇ છે કે આપણને જેમ ઘરમાં મા-બાપ સંસ્કાર પૂવતિ કરે છે, તેમ કાન્તુફોઇએ પણ ગણ્યા ગણાય નવિ એટલાના જીિનમાંસંસ્કાર

પૂવતિકરી છે. જ્યારેકાંતાબેન અનેપ્રભાકાંતભાઈએ એમની જીિનયાત્રાની ગાથા 'િીણેલા ફૂલ' નામક પુસ્તકરૂપેિષિ૨૦૧૧માંપ્રકાવશત કરી, ત્યારે એમના વિદ્યાથથીઓનો, સ્નેિીજનોનો અને જનતાનો પ્રચંડ પ્રવતસાદ મળ્યો િતો. કેટલાય મહાનુભાવો, અગ્રણીઅોના લેખો, પત્રો અને વણોનોનો એ પુસ્તકમાં સમાવેશ થયો છે. મુંબઈ ખાતેના વવમોચન સમારોહમાં તો એમના ૧૯૫૫ના અમદાવાદના વવદ્યાથથી અને ખૂબ જ વિખ્યાત મેનેજમેન્ટ ગુરૂ અને પ્રખર વસતારિાદક સ્િ. પ્રો. ઋવષકુમાર પંડયાએ એમના માનનીય વશિક વિય કાંતાબેનને માટે ખાસ ક્યાંકથી શોધી લાવીને 'બુલબુલ તરંગ' (Taisokoto) નામનું વાવજંત્ર પણ વગાડ્યું એ એક અવવસ્મરણીય અનુભવ હતો. જો વિદ્યાથથીનો પ્રેમ ૬૧ િષિ પછી પણ જાગૃત િતો તો તેએની ગુરુ પ્રત્યેની ભાિનાનુંપ્રશંસનીય પ્રતીક છેપણ શ્રેય તો ગુરુનેજ ઘટેને! જેમ આપણી મા કેટલુંય આપ્યા પછી નેમાવજત કયાોપછી પણ કાળજી લેવાનુંભૂલતી નથી, છોડતી નથી, તેમ મુ. કાન્તુફોઇએ પણ અમારા કુટુંબમાં દરેક િસંગે અમારી કાળજી રાખી છે, અમારા કુટુંબના િસંગોમાં- પોતાની નાદુરસ્ત તવબયત વખતેપણ – ભારત આવીને હાજરી આપીને, જે સંબંધ મારા દાદીની દીકરી રૂપે ને વપતાની બહેન તરીકે શરુ થયો હતો, તેને એક મા અને દાદીમાના સ્વરૂપેપણ ભજવ્યો એનેહુંઅનેઅમારો સમગ્ર પારેખ પવરવાર એક સદ્ભાગ્ય ગણીએ છીએ. આજે મારી પૌત્રી અનન્યાંની પહેલી વષોગાંઠ ઉજવાય છેત્યારેપાંચ પાંચ પેઢીથી મુ. કાન્તુફોઇની અમારા કુટુંબમાંસ્વજન રૂપેની હાજરીનેહુંએક મોટી ઉપલબ્ધી ગણુંછું. આખરે એક આ નાના લેખમાં માતા તૂલ્ય વ્યવિ માટેની સવો ભાવનાઓનેન્યાય આપવો એ બહુજ કવઠન, અથવાતો તદ્દન અશક્ય લાગેપણ એટલેજ એનેમારો એક વફાદાર િયાસ ગણવો રહ્યો. ઈશ્વરને એજ પ્રાથિના કરું કે મુ. કાંતાબેન જેિો પ્રેમ, કરુણા અને લાગણીઓથી સભર અખંડ માતૃરૂપી સ્તોત્ર સદાય િ​િેતો રાખો.

જનનીની જોડ સખી નહિ જડેરેલોલ...

- જ્યોત્સના શાિ વિષેકોઇ બોલિાનુંકહેતો િગર અટ્કયેજાણેબોલ્યા જ કરીએ. માના ગુણગાન ગાઇએ એટલા ઑછા! એનુંિણણન કરિા શબ્દો પૂરતા નથી!! શબ્દોમાંનવહ ભાિમાંજ એની અવભવ્યવિ સમાયેલી છે. ખેર.માની ઑળખ કોઇ ભેજાબાજેસરસ આપી છે... આંખેબંધ કરકેપ્રેમ કરેિો પ્રેવમકા હૈ..આંખેખોલ કેપ્રેમ કરેિો દોતત હૈ. આંખેદીખાકેપ્રેમ કરેિો પત્ની હૈઔર અપની આંખ બંધ હોનેતક પ્રેમ કરેિો માંહૈપરંતુઆંખોમેંપ્રેમ ન જતાતેહુએ ભી પ્રેમ કરેિો વપતા હૈ નાના હતા મયારેઆપણામાંથી કેટલાયેપેલુંબાળ ગીત શીખ્યા હોઇશું કેસાંભળ્યુંહશે? “બોલુહુંતો પહેલો અક્ષર બા..બા...બા..બોલિામાંએ જ સહેલો બા..બા..બા... વ્હાલામાંવ્હાલી. મારી બા બા બા..” તત્રીના બધા જ હક્કોમાંસૌથી મહાન હક્ક હોય તો તેમાતા થિાનો છે, માતૃમિ ધારણ કરિાથી તત્રીને પોતાના જીિનમાં સંપણ ૂ ણ થયાનો અહેસાસ થાય છે. જગતનો સૌથી પવિત્ર શબ્દ હોય તો તેછે"મા". ભગિાન છે કે નવહ એ માન્યતાનો વિષય છે અને આજકાલનું જનરેશન તો કદાચ ભગિાનના અસ્તતમિનેય તિીકારિા તૈયાર થાય કે કેમ એ એક પ્રશ્ન છે. પણ માના અસ્તતમિ માટેકોઇ સિાલ ઉભો નથી થતો! ઇશ્વરને થયું કે, એ બધે પહોંચી િળે નવહ એટલે માતાનું સજણન કયુ.ું ઇશ્વરનેખુદ પૃથ્િી પર અિતાર લેિો હોય તો માની કૂખેઅિતરિુંપડેછે. માતા પરમ સમય છે અને વપતા એના સાક્ષી છે. આપણે જ્યારે પણ તકલીફમાંહોઇએ કેકપરી સ્તથવતમાંમુકાઇએ મયારેમુખમાંથી પહેલો ઉદ્ગાર "ઑ મા" નીકળેછે. મા સાથેનો નાતો જન્મથી જ બંધાય છેઅનેમૃમયુપયુંત રહેછે. દેહમાંથી જેદેહ આપે, જીિનમાંથી જીિ આપે, દીિામાંથી દીિો પ્રગટાિે, અપેક્ષા વિના અપાર સ્નેહ આપે, જેના પ્રેમના લેખાંજોખાંન થઇ શકેતે "મા". માનો અથણ જોડણીકોશમાં જોિાનો નથી હોતો. એ જીિનકોશમાં જોિાનો હોય છે. માની આંખમાંઆંસન ુ ુંતળાિ, હોઠ પર સ્તમતના કમળ અનેઆસપાસ સુિાસ અનેસંગીત હોય છે. મા એટલેસલામતી. ગભણમાંથી બાળક પ્રગટે છે એટલે તરત એને માની છાતીએ િળગાડી દઇએ છીએ. કારણકે બાળકનેએમાંગભાણશયની હૂંફ મળેછે. બાળક મોટુંથાય પછી એની સાથે ગાભુલઇ ફરેછે. ગાભુએ એની સાથેહરતી ફરતી મા છે. મનેબરાબર યાદ છેજ્યારેમારી બા મારી બેનનેમાત્ર દોઢેક િષણની મૂકી તિગગેવસધાિી મયારેબાના સાડલાનો એક ટૂકડો-ગાભો એના હાથમાંઆિતા એ રડતી બંધ થઇ જતી. મા સદેહેસાથેહોય કેન હોય પણ આપણા અસ્તતમિની આસપાસ એક આબોહિા રૂપે, જીિનભરના િાતાિરણરૂપે હિાની જેમ સદાય સૂક્ષ્મ તિરૂપેરહેતી હોય છે. રડિુંહોય કેવ્હાલ કરિુંહોય તો માના ખોળામાંમાથુમૂકિાથી એક ં ભય રવહત હોય છે. મા જાતની પરમ શાંવત મળે છે. મા સાથેનો સંબધ બાળકની સાથેહોય તો તેસલામવત અનુભિેછે. જગતમાંસૌથી પહેલો શારીવરક, માનવસક અનેઆધ્યાસ્મમક સંબધ ં માતાથી શરૂ થાય છે. મા શબ્દ ઉચ્ચારાય અનેએક ઉજાસ પથરાય છે, ચમમકાર સજાણય છે. દુવનયાના એકેએક માણસના જીિનમાંઆ ચમમકાર સજાણય છે. ચાહેએ સજણક હો, કલાકાર હો, િૈજ્ઞાવનક હો, રાજપુરૂષ હો યા વચંતક...જ્યારેએ માની િાત કરે છે મયારે બધા જ અંચળા ઉતારી દે છે. With out HER even HERO is O..મા સમયનો સૂરજ છે. મા એટલેજન્મદાતા તો ખરી જ. પણ જેની આંખોમાંઅમૃત દેખાય એ તમામ મા છે. મા પ્રમયેક નારીમાંકોઇ અમૃતક્ષણેજાગી ઉઠેછે. મા કદી મરતી નથી. મા માટે અસંખ્ય કહેિતો છે.. મા એટલે મા, બીજા બધા િગડાના િા.., ગોળ વિના મોળો કંસાર અનેમા વિના સૂનો સંસાર..ઘડા વિનાની ઠીકરી અનેમા વિનાની વદકરી, બાપના રાજમાંન સમાય પણ માના રેંવટયામાંસમાય, એક મા સો વશક્ષકની ગરજ સારે..િગેર.ે જનનીની જોડ સખી નહિ જડેરેલોલ..મીઠા મધુનેમીઠા મેહુલા રે લોલ..વરસેઘડીક વ્યોમ વાદળી રેલોલ, 20

-દેવન્ે દ્ર ભટ્ટ ••• જગદીશ્વરની કરૂણામૂરત, વિતી વત્સલતાના પૂર, સંસ્કારોની જીવંત સહરતા, િેમેઅદ્ભૂત પાતી નૂર, હિય કામદૂધા હવશ્વંભરની, જગમાંજુગ જુગ જીઑ જનની!

- હિભુવન વ્યાસ ••• આપણેજન્મ લઇએ છીએ પછી માતાથી ધીરેધીરેઅલગ થતા જઇએ છીએ પણ માતા કદી પોતાના બાળકથી છૂટી નથી પડતી. એના છૂપા આશીિાણદ આપણુંબળ બની રહેછે. દેવોએ દીધેલ અમરત દુહનયાએ ક્યાંપીધુ,ં માતાની મમતાનુંઅમરત સૌએ ચાખી લીધુ.ં આશીવા​ાદ તો જનેતાના કદી નથી કરમાતા.

- વેણીભાઇ પુરોહિત ••• પરથમ િણામ મારા માતાજીનેકિેજો રે, માન્યુંજેણેમાટીનેરતનજી: ભૂખ્યા રિી જમાડ્યા અમને, જાગી ઉંઘાડ્યા એવા, કાયાના કીધેલા જતનજી - રામનારાયણ વી. પાઠક ••• આપણા ઉપવનષદોએ દેિમિમાંમાતાનેસિણપ્રથમ તથાન આપીનેકહ્યું છે, "માતૃદેિો ભવ્" . આપણેઇવતહાસના પાના ઉથલાિીશુંતો કેટલાય િીર પુરૂષોના જીિનમાંમાતાના અણમોલ અનુદાનનો અહેસાસ થયા વિના નવહ રહે! વશિાજીમાંમાતા જીજાબાઇએ હાલરડાંગાતાંગાતાંિીરતાના ગુણનો સંચાર કયોણ હોિાની િાતથી આપણે સૌ માવહતગાર છીએ. ગાંધીજીના જીિનમાંપણ માતા પૂતળીબાઇએ ધમણના સંતકાર વસંચ્યા હતા. વિજ્ઞાન કહે છે, પ્રેમનુંકનેકશન કેબોન્ડીંગ તથાવપત કરતો હોમોણન "એક્સીટોસીન" છે, માતા બાળકનેધિરાિેમયારેએનો તત્રાિ થતો હોય છે. આમ મા-બાળકનો સંબધ ં જન્મથી જ અતૂટ હોય છે. માતાના હાથમાંકેિો જાદુહોય છે, એ બાળકના શરીર પર ફરતા જ સરસ નીંદર આિી જાય છે. બાળકના ચહેરાનેજોઇ એના મનની િાત પારખી જાય એ મા, બીજુકોઇ નવહ! બોલીિુડની ફફલ્મોમાં "મા" વિષેના અનેક ગીતો લોક- જીભે ચઢેલા છે..જેિા કે," મા, મુઝેઅપનેઆંચલમેંછૂપા લે, મા... પ્યારી મા, મા તુઝે સલામ., મૈંનેમાંકો દેખા હૈ, માંકા પ્યાર નવહ દેખા.િગેર.ે અઢળક સાવહમય મા વિષેરચાયુંછેપરંતુમા એ મા છે. માની તુલના કોઇની સાથેના થાય. ઝિેરચંદ મેઘાણીના કસુબ ં ીના રંગની રંગત તો આપણા સૌના હૈયાં િલોિી દેછે. લાગ્યો કસુબ ં ીનો રંગ! િો રાજ મનેલાગ્યો કસુબ ં ીનો રંગ! જનનીના િૈયામાંપોઢંતા પોઢંતા, પીધો કસુબ ં ીનો રંગ; ધોળાંધાવણ કેરી ધારાએ ધારાએ પામ્યો કસુબ ં ીનો રંગ આજના માતૃવદને જગતની સિણ માતાઑના ચરણોમાં કોટી કોટી િંદન. આ વદન ભલેિષણમાંએક વદિસ આિતો હોય પરંતુમાના ચરણોમાં આખુંઆયખુંસમવપણત કરીએ તો પણ એનુંઋણ ચૂકિી ન શકાય. જય િો જગતજનનીની!

અહીં મુનવ્વર રાણાના શબ્દોમાં કહીએ તો...

- આલોક શ્રીવાસ્તવ ઘેર લેનેકો મુજેજબ ભી બલાએં આ ગઈ ગુજરાતીમાં એક ખૂબ જ જાણીતી કહેવત છે કે, ‘જે કર ઝુલાવે પારણું ઢાલ બનકર સામનેમાંકી દુઆએં આ ગઈ તે જગ પર શાસન કરે.’ ભારતના વડા પ્રધાન તરીકે સત્તાની ધુરા ભારત સરકારે નવેમ્બર, ૨૦૧૬માં લીધેલા નોટબંધીના બનણમય પછી સંભાળતાં વડા પ્રધાન નરેન્દ્ર મોદી માટે માતૃભાષાની આ કહેવત બબલકુલ સરકારની ભારે ટીકા થવા લાગી ત્યારે મોદી સરકારના સમથમનમાં રહીને બંધબેસતી છે. મહાનમાં મહાન વ્યબિની સફળતા તેમની માતાએ હીરાબા પોતે બેંકમાં રૂ. ૫૦૦ અને રૂ. ૧૦૦૦ની જૂની નોટો બદલાવવા ગયાં તેમનામાં બસંચલ ે ા સંથકારો અને ગુણોને આભારી હોય છે. આ જ મમમ હતાં. સમજાવતી આ કહેવત પ્રમાણે જ હીરાબાએ પોતાનાં બાળકોનો ઉછેર કયોમ વષમ ૨૦૧૧માં પણ જ્યારે નરેન્દ્ર મોદીએ સદભાવના ઉપવાસ કયામ ત્યારે છે અને આજે તેમના દીકરા નરેન્દ્ર મોદીનું નેતૃત્વ વૈબિક થતરે પ્રસંશાને હીરાબાનાં આશીવામદ લીધા હતાં અને બાએ પાત્ર બન્યું છે. વષમ ૨૦૧૧માં મોદીને રામચબરતમાનસ પુથતક હીરાબાના ત્રીજા નંબરના દીકરા નરેન્દ્રભાઈ ભેટમાં આપ્યું હતુ.ં વષમ ૨૦૧૨માં પોતાના દામોદરદાસ મોદીનો જન્મ ૧૭મી સપ્ટમ્ે બર ૧૯૫૦ના જન્મબદને મોદીએ માતાનાં આશીવામદ લીધાં રોજ મહેસાણા બજલ્લામાં આવેલા વડનગરમાં થયો ત્યારે બાએ તેમને ભગવદ્ ગીતા ભેટમાં આપી હતો. મધ્યમવગગીય કુટબ ું માં જન્મેલા મોદીના બપતા હતી. મોદી વડા પ્રધાન બન્યા પછી પણ વષમ દામોદરદાસ મૂળચંદ મોદીને અનાજ દળવાની ઘંટી ૨૦૧૪માં તેમના જન્મબદને ગાંધીનગર આવ્યા હતી. એ પછી દામોદરદાસે રેલવે થટેશન પર ચાની હતા અને સવારે જ હીરાબાના આશીવામદ લારી ખોલી હતી. એ સમયે તો હીરાબા ગૃબહણી જ લીધાં હતાં. મોદીને તેમના જન્મ બદવસે બાએ હતાં. એક સાંધો ત્યાં તેર તૂટે જેવી ઘરની આબથમક રૂ. ૫,૦૦૧ આપ્યા હતા. આ રકમ બાએ જમ્મુસ્થથબતમાં પણ જોકે આ દંપતી છએ બાળકોનાં કાશ્મીરના રાહત કાયમમાં આપવાની વડા ભણતરમાં કોઈ ખામી ન રહી જાય તેનો સુપરે ે ખ્યાલ પ્રધાન દીકરાને અપીલ કરી હતી. વષમ ૨૦૧૬માં રાખતું હતુ.ં ઘરની સ્થથબતનો તાગ એવી રીતે મળે કે નરેન્દ્ર મોદી જન્મ્યા ત્યારે ઘરમાં પંખો પણ નરેન્દ્ર મોદી વડા પ્રધાન બન્યા એ પછી મે, ૨૦૧૬માંપ્રથમવાર પણ નરેન્દ્ર મોદી જન્મબદવસે વહેલી સવારે જ હીરાબા પાંચકે દદવસ મોદીના અદધકૃત દનવાસ્થાન હીરાબાનાં આશીવામદ લેવા રાયસણમાં વૃંદાવન નહોતો, પણ બાળકોમાં સંથકારોનું એવું બસંચન સાત એવું કે બાળકો બહુ સમજદાર. નરેન્દ્ર મોદી પણ આરસીઆરમાંરહેવા માટેગયા હતા. મોદીએ બાનેવ્હીલચેરમાં બંગ્લોઝમાં પોતાના ભાઈના ઘરે પહોંચી ગયા બેસાડીને સમજણા થયા પછી મોટાભાઈ સોમાભાઈ સાથે ફોટોગ્રાફ્સદનવાસસ્થાનના બગીચાની સેર કરાવી હતી. મોદીએ આ હતા અને હીરાબાએ લાડુ ખવરાવીને તેમનું સોદિયલ મીદડયા પર િેર પણ કયા​ાંહતાંઅનેફેસબુ ક મોઢું મીઠું કરાવ્યું હતુ.ં બપતાને મદદ કરવા ચાની લારીએ જતા. પેસન્ે જસમને પર ઉપરોક્ત તસવીરને૧૬ લાખ જેટલી લાઈક મળી હતી. બુલદં ીયોં કા બડેસેબડા નનશાન છુઆ ચા વેચતા હતા. ઉઠાયા ગોંદ મેંમાંનેતબ આસમાન છુઆ હીરાબાના જ બશથતબિ ઉછેરના કારણે આજે છએ બાળકો પોતાનાં દીકરાના લક્ષણ પારણેથી જ પારખતાં હીરાબાએ વષમ ૨૦૧૨માં સંસારમાં સુખી છે. નરેન્દ્ર મોદીના સૌથી મોટા ભાઈ સોમાભાઈ દામોદરદાસ ગુજરાતની બવધાનસભા ચૂટં ણી વખતે એક જાગૃત નાગબરક તરીકે મતદાન મોદી આરોગ્યખાતામાં નોકરી કરતા હતા. અત્યારે તો તેઓ બનવૃત્ત થઈ કયુ​ું હતું અને તેમણે ત્યારે જ કહ્યું હતું કે, ‘મારો દીકરો આ વખતે પણ ગયા છે અને વડનગરમાં તેમનો એક વૃિાશ્રમ છે જ્યાં તેઓ વૃિોની સેવા જંગી બહુમબતથી જીતશે.’ કરે છે. આ ઉપરાંત તેઓ જ્ઞાબત અને સમાજ માટે પણ સેવાનાં કાયોમ કરે છે. વષમ ૨૦૧૨માં જ ગુજરાત બવધાનસભાની ચૂટં ણીઓમાં પુત્રનો બવજય બીજા નંબરના અમૃતભાઈ પબરવાર સાથે અમદાવાદમાં વસે છે અને થયા બાદ જ હીરાબાએ તો એવો બવિાસ પણ વ્યિ કયોમ જ હતો કે, મારો લેથ મશીનના ઓપરેટર છે. દીકરો દેશનો વડા પ્રધાન બનશે. તેમણે કહ્યું હતું કે ‘મને ગવમ છે. મારા નરેન્દ્ર મોદીના નાનાભાઈ પ્રહલાદભાઈ મોદી અમદાવાદમાં રેશબનંગ દીકરાએ ગુજરાત અને દેશ માટે ઘણું બધું કરવાનું છે. તે અહીં નહીં એસોબસએશનના પ્રમુખ છે. નરેન્દ્રભાઈના સૌથી નાના ભાઈ પંકજભાઈ અટકે.’ માબહતી ખાતામાં નોકરી કરે છે અને ગાંધીનગરમાં જ રહે છે. હીરા બા યેએસા કઝઝહૈજો મૈંઅદા કર હી નહીં સકતા પણ પંકજભાઈ સાથે જ રહે છે. હીરાબાનો જ વતનપ્રેમ કદાચ બાળકોમાં મૈંજબ તક ઘર ન લૌટૂંમેરી માંસજદેમેંરહેતી હૈ ઊતયોમ હશે. પોતાનાં બધાં જ બાળકો પોતપોતાનાં સુખી સંસારમાં જુદી જુદી ૯૬ વષમની વયે થવથથ અને સાદું જીવન બવતાવતા હીરાબા નાના પુત્ર જગાએ પરોવાઈ ગયાં પછી પણ હીરાબા પૈતૃક ગામ વડનગરમાં જ રહેતા પંકજ મોદીની સાથે ગાંધીનગરના સેક્ટર-૨૨માં ૩ રૂમ રસોડાના સરકારી હતા. વધતી વયના કારણે જ્યારે તેમની શ્રવણશબિ અને શારીબરક મકાનમાં રહે છે, પણ તેમની ઘરડી આંખોમાં હંમશ ે ાં એ વતામઈ આવે છે કે ક્ષમતા ક્ષીણ થયા પછી તેઓ પંકજભાઈને ઘરે ગાંધીનગર રહેવા આવ્યાં દેશનો વડો પ્રધાન દીકરો હવે ક્યારે એમને મળવા આવશે. અહીં એ જાણવું હતાં. નરેન્દ્રભાઈનાં બહેન વસંતીબહેનની વાત કરીએ તો તેઓ તેમનાં કે આ મા પ્રબસબિથી પરે રહેવામાં માને છે. નરેન્દ્ર મોદી તેર વષમ સુધી પબત હસમુખભાઈ મોદી સાથે બવસનગરમાં રહે છે અને ગૃબહણી જ છે. ગુજરાતના મુખ્ય પ્રધાન રહ્યા અને હવે દેશના વડા પ્રધાન છે, પણ હીરાબા હસમુખભાઈ બનવૃત્ત એલઆઇસી ઓફફસર છે. લાંબો સમય ક્યારેય નરેન્દ્ર મોદી સાથે રહ્યાં નથી. એનું કારણ કદાચ એ આ છએ ભાઈ બહેન ખૂબ જ નાની ઉંમરનાં હતાં ત્યારે જ તેમનાં પણ હોઈ શકે કે, સંઘષમ કરીને જાતમહેનતે ઘરને ઉજાળનારાં આ થત્રીને બપતાનું અવસાન થયું અને બાળકો અને ઘરની સંપણ ૂ મ જવાબદારી હીરાબા વધુ લાઈમલાઈટમાં રહેવું પસંદ નથી. તેઓને એકાંત અને શાંબતની બજંદગી પર આવી પડી હતી. પહેલાં તો હીરાબા ગામમાં જે છુટક કામ – મજૂરી મળે પસાર કરવી ગમે છે. મા અને વડો પ્રધાન દીકરો જોકે સમય મળ્યે એ કરીને ગુજરાન ચલાવતાં હતાં. સોમાભાઈ અને નરેન્દ્રભાઈ ત્યારે એકબીજાંના ખબરઅંતર પૂછતાં રહે છે. માચમ, ૨૦૧૭માં પણ મોદી ભણતર સાથે બપતાની ચાની લારી ચલાવતા હતા. આ સમજુ બાળકોનાં જ જ્યારે ગુજરાત આવ્યા ત્યારે પણ વ્યથત બશડ્યુલ વચ્ચે માતાને મળવાનું ભણતરમાં પૈસાની તંગીના કારણે કોઈ ખલેલ ન આવે તે માટે હીરાબાએ ચૂક્યા નહોતા. આવી જ રીતે વડા પ્રધાન હોવા છતાં મોદી દસ બમબનટ માટે વષોમ સુધી બીજાનાં ઘરનાં કચરા - પોતા, વાસણ અને કપડાં ધોઈને પોતાનાં પણ સમય કાઢીને બાનાં આબશષ લેવાનું અને તેમનાં હાલચાલ પૂછવાનું બાળકોને ભણાવ્યા. તેથી જ દૂર હોવા છતાં મોદીનું મન મા સાથે જોડાયેલું ભૂલતા નથી. રહે છે અને કોઈ પણ પ્રસંગે તેઓ માતાના આશીવામદ લેવાનું ચૂકતા નથી.

૧૦૨ વર્ષેઘેઘરૂ વડલો બની વાત્સલ્યનુંઅમી ઝરણુંવહાવતાં"બા"નેશત્ શત્ વંદન

મા'ના વાત્સલ્યમાંજગતભરનુંરસાયણ ભરેલંુછે: કાન્તતભાઇ

પૂ, મણીબાનો જડમ નનડયાદ નજીક દાવડા ગામે ૧૯૧૪માંથયો હતો. એમના લગ્ન ૧૯૨૧માંસાત વષમની આપણા ભારતીય સંથકારમાંમા-બાપનો હંમશ ે ા આદરઉંમરે પીપળાતાના ૧૧ વષમના ઇશ્વરભાઇ પટેલ સાથે સત્કાર કરવો એવું આપણા ધમમશાથત્રો, સંતો, થયેલાં. ૧૯૩૬માં તેઓ ભારતથી યુગાડડાના કંપાલા ઉપદેશકો હરહંમશ ે કહેતા હોય છેપણ એનુંપાલન કે વસવાટ માટે ગયાં હતાં. પૂ. મણીબાને ત્રણ દીકરા અનુસરણ કેટલા કરે છે એ કહેવંુ મુચકેલ છે પરંતુ િંદુભાઇ ૮૩ વષમ, હું (કાશ્ડતભાઇ) ૮૦ અને સૌથી આપણે રહીએ છીએ એ પશ્ચિમની પરંપરા ગજબની નાના મનહરભાઇ ૬૪ વષમના છે. યુગાડડાથી ભારત છે. અહીં તમેતમારા મા-બાપથી ભલેઅલગ અથવા દૂર ગયા પછી માતા મણીબા અને નપતાશ્રી ઇશ્વરભાઇ દેશમાંવસતા હોય પણ વષષેએકવાર "મધસમડે" નનનમત્તે અમારી સાથેજ રહેતાં. વષોમસુધી પીપળાતામાંનશક્ષક તમારાં જડમદાતાને યાદ કરી, ભેટ-સોગાદ કે ફૂલોના તરીકે ફરજ અદા કયામ બાદ ૧૯૭૭માં અમે લંડન ગુલદથતા આપી તમારો સ્નેહ પ્રગટ કરવાનો રહે છે. આવી થથાયી થયા. અહી અમે ટવીકનહામમાં દુકાન ગાત્રો થીજાવે એવી ઠંડી ને કંટાળાજનક નશયાળો ખરીદી. એ પછી ૧૯૮૩માંબા અનેબાપુજી બન્નેલંડન નવદાય થવાની તૈયારીમાં હોય એવા વખતે ધીમે પગલે આવ્યાં. ૧૯૯૬માં નપતાજીનો થવગમવાસ થયા બાદ બા વસંત આવતી જણાય છે. ફૂલો આચ્છાનદત વૃક્ષો, અમારી સાથેજ રહેછે. વેલીઓ ને ધરતી પર પીળાં ડાફાડીલ પુષ્પો મારાં પત્ની સનવતાબહેન ઓથટીયોપોરોસીસ, આથમરાઇટીશ, દુનનયાભરની માતૃશનિને વધાવવા પૂરબહારમાં ખીલી ઊઠે છે ત્યારે બ્લડપ્રેશર, કકડનીની નબમારી જેવી અનેક શાનરરીક તકલીફોથી પીડાય નિટનમાંમાિમમનહનામાં"મધસમડે"નુંપવમઆવેછે. છે. તેમ છતાંસાસુ-વહુ વચ્ચેએટલા બધા સ્નેહ અનેસુમળ ે ભયામસંબધ ંો “મા"ના વાત્સલ્યમાં જગતભરનું રસાયણ ભરેલું હોય છે. ભગવાન છે કે બન્ને એકબીજા સાથે કોઇપણ ટેડશન વગર પ્રેભાવથી રહે છે. બધી જગ્યાએ જઇ નથી શકતા એટલે એણે "મા" બનાવી. પ્રભુને પણ તાજેતરમાંજ મનેવેમ્બલી બસ થટેડડ પર અકથમાતેપડી જવાથી હાથની અવતરવુંપડેછેઅનેમા'ની ગોદમાંરમવુંપડેછે, મા' એ મા' છે, બધાને કોણીનું ફ્રેકિર થઇ ગયું છે એટલે થોડું ઘણું ઘરકામ કે શોપીંગમાં ત્યાં નવરમવું પડે છે.” અમારા કુટબ ું ની માથે ૧૦૨ વષમના ઘેઘરૂ વડલા મદદરૂપ થતો એ બંધ થઇ ગયું છે. શનનવાર અને રનવવારના સમાં મણીબાની છત્રછાયા છે એથી અમે ખૂબ હષમ અને ગવમની લાગણી અવારનવાર મારી દીકરી પલ્લવીકા અને મારા નાના ભાઇ અનુભવીએ છીએ. ૨૦૧૪માં પૂજ્ય મણીબાએ ૧૦૦ વષમ પૂરાં કયા​ાં. મનહરભાઇનાં પત્ની અ.સૌ. જ્યોત્સના નિટનનાંમહારાણીએ ખાસ બથમડેકાડડ અમને મદદરૂપ થાય છે. મારી અને મોકલી અમારાં બાને "થવથથ, નનરોગી મારાં પત્નીની ઉંમર થઇ ગઇ હોવાથી જીવન રહેઅનેદીઘામયુહો" એવા સુદં ર જોઇએ એટલી થફૂનતમથી ઘરકામ કે શબ્દોમાં શુભેચ્છા પાઠવી. પાંિ પેઢીની રસોઇ થઇ ના શકે. ઘરમાંઅમેત્રણેય ૩૪ શાખા-પ્રશાખાઓ જોનાર પૂજ્ય (બા, હુંઅનેમારાંપત્ની) રસોઇકામ કે બાની ૧૦૦મો જડમનદવસ અમે વેમ્બલી ઘરકામ કરવા અશનિમાન હોવાથી ઓકીંગ્ટન મેનોર થકૂલના હોલમાં વસોના મૂળવતની નમનાક્ષીબહેન પટેલ ઉજવ્યો એ વેળાએ ઇશ્ડડયા, દુબઇ અને અમારી દીકરી થવરૂપે અમારી ખૂબ અમેનરકાથી અમારા પનરવારજનો માવજત કરે છે. છેલ્લા છ વષમથી ઉમંગભેર બાની બથમડેમાં ભાગ લેવા પૂ.બાની રૂમમાંરહેતાંનમનાક્ષીબહેન બા ખાસ પધાયામહતા. "ગુજરાત સમાિાર"સાથે રાત્રે સૂવું, બાથરૂમમાં લઇ જવાં, Asian Voice”ના તંત્રીશ્રી સી.બી. પટેલ તસવીરમાં(ડાબેથી) અ.સૌ. જ્યોત્સનાબહેન, અ.સૌ. પલ્લવવકાબહેન, નવડાવવાં, રસોઇ કરી જમાડવું તમામ પણ ખાસ ઉપશ્થથત રહ્યા હતા. સાથે પૂજ્ય મણીબા, શ્રી કાન્તતભાઇ તથા અ.સૌ. સવવતાબહેન નદનિયામનો કાયમભાર ઉપાડી લીધો છે. સાથે ૩૫૦ જેટલા સગાં સંબંધી-નમત્રોએ મારાં પત્ની સનવતાબહેનની પણ એ ખુબ સરસ કાળજી રાખે છે. પણ હાજર રહી પૂજ્ય બાનેદીઘમઆયુષ્યની શુભકામના પાઠવી હતી. સૌ રસોઇકામ, ઘરકામ, શોપીંગ તમામ જવાબદારી આ દીકરીએ ઉપાડી શુભચ્ે છકો અનેપ્રભુની પરમ કૃપાથી અમારાંપૂ.મણીબા ૧૦૨ વષષેહરતાંલીધી હોવાથી અમનેખૂબ રાહત છે. ફરતાંછે. બાનેકાનેસાંભળવામાંતકલીફ પડેપણ ખુરશીમાંબેસી એ માતૃનદને હું, મારા ભાઇઓ અને અમારા પનરવારની પાંિેય પેઢી ટી.વી નસનરયલોનો આનંદ હજુ માણી શકે છે. આ ઉંમરે પણ દરરોજ વતી પૂજ્ય મણીબાના િરણોમાંશત્ શત્ વંદન કરતાંઆપણા સમાજના સવારેવહેલા ઊઠી નદનિયામપતાવી ૯ થી બપોરના ૧૨ સુધી પ્રભુપ્રાથમના સૌ દીકરા-દીકરીઓનેનમ્રઅરજ કરતાંકહુંછુંકે"માત-નપતાની સેવાઅનેધાનમમક ગ્રંથોનુંવાંિન એ એમનો નનત્યકમમછે. ૧૦૨ પૂરાંકરી ઉપર સુશ્રષુ ા કરવાથી િારધામની જાત્રાનુંફળ મળે. શ્રવણ બનીનેતીથમયાત્રા િારેક મનહના થયા તેમછતાં પૂજ્ય મણીબાનો િહેરો એકદમ કરાવી ના શકો તો કંઇ નનહ, પણ.. માત-નપતાની જીવનયાત્રા યાતનામય તાજગીભયોમ લાગે. ૯૬ વષષે ટવીકનહામની મારી દુકાનેથી બા એકલાં ના બનેતેનુંધ્યાન જરૂર રાખજો"; બિપણમાંજેણેતમનેપાળ્યા-પોષ્યા ત્રણ બસ બદલી વેમ્બલી સનાતન મંનદરે દશમને જતાં એવું હરીફરી ના એનાંઘડપણમાંહૈયાંબાળ્યા તો યાદ રાખજો તમારાંભાગ્ય પરવાયા​ાં!!” શકેપણ ઘરમાંએ િાલીનેફરેઅનેસમયસર જમી પણ શકે. માતૃનદનેસૌ માતૃશનિનેઅમારા વંદન.

ગુજરાતનાંિધર ટેરસ ે ા સિાંસેવવકા ઇન્દુબહેન િહેતાનેશત શત વંદન

ભૂમિએ પણ દયાની દેવી િધર ટેરેસા જેવી ઇન્દુબહેન િહેતાની ભેટ આપી હતી. પોતાને "પારકી ભૂમિના પોસ્ટિેન" ગણાવતાં સફેદ ગુજરાતના રાજપીપળાિાં જન્િેલાં ઇન્દુબહેને ૧૯૪૨િાં વસ્ત્રધારી, ગળાિાં સ્ફટીકની િાળા ધારણ કરનાર "મહંદછોડો" આંદોલનને નજરે મનહાળ્યું છે. એ વખતે સૌમ્ય ચહેરા ધરાવનાર ગુજરાતી મવદૂમિની વાત કરીએ અિદાવાદિાં િેટ્રીકની પરીક્ષા આપી ના શક્યાં પણ ઘરે બેઠાં એટલે આપણી સિક્ષ િરક િરક હસતાં ઇન્દુબહેન પુ સ્તકો વાંચી સંસ્કૃતનો અભ્યાસ કરેલો. એિણેરાજપીપળાના િહેતા તરવરી ઊઠે. આમિકા અને લંડનિાં રહેતા જ કકશોરભાઇ િહેતા સાથે લગ્ન કરી ૧૯૫૦િાં આમિકાના આપણા કેટલાય જણે આ ઇન્દુબહેન િહેતાને ગાયત્રી ટાન્ઝામનયા તરફ પ્રયાણ કયુ​ું. સંસ્કૃતનો અભ્યાસ કરેલો હવન, લગ્નમવમધ કેઅંત્યેિી મવમધ કરાવતાંદીઠાંજ એટલે એ િોશી અને દારેસલાિ​િાં ધામિષક યજ્ઞ, હશે. આ ઉપરાંત પંચાવનથી વધુ વિષથી લગ્નમવમધ કરાવતાંઅનેિોશીની શાળાિાંસંસ્કૃત જનકલ્યાણના કાયોષિાં કાયષરત એમશયન પણ ભણાવતાં. આયષસિાજની અસર હેઠળ ફાઉન્ડેશન ફોર હેલ્પ સાથે સમિય આવ્યા પછી તેિણે વેદોિ મવમધથી ગાયત્રી ઇન્દુબહેનને ઘણા બધાંએ જોયાં જ હશે યજ્ઞ કરાવવા શરૂ કરેલા. પરંતુ આ ઇન્દુબહેન િહેતાને િેં ઇન્દુબહેને અંધજનો િાટે ઇંગ્લેન્ડની ૧૯૯૧િાંજિષની ખાતેયોજાયેલી મવશ્વ સમિય "રોયલ કોિનવેલ્થ સોસાયટી મહન્દુ પમરિદિાં કોઇ અગલ રૂપે ફોર બ્લાઇન્ડ" સાથે સમિય રહીને મનહાળ્યાં. આ પમરિદ વેળાએ અિે િાતબર રકિનુ ં દાન એકત્ર કરી ઉત્તિ એક યુમનવમસષટીની હોસ્ટેલિાં સે વ ા કરી છે . ૮૫ વિષ ની વય વટાવી ઉતયાષ હતા. વહેલી સવારે સ્નાનામદ ગયા હોવા છતાં જનસેવાિાં પ્રવૃત્ત પરવારી નાની ડાયરી સાઇઝના "એમશયન ફાઉન્ડેશન ફોર હેલ્પ"ના આલ્બિ​િાં ફોટા જોઇ ઇન્દુબહેન સ્થાપક ટ્રસ્ટી શ્રી ગોપાળભાઇ પોપટ કહે છે કે, “સો ટકા શબ્દશ: બોલ્યાં"રડ્યાંઅત્યારેતિેકેિ બહુ યાદ આયાં!!”. એિની અનાશમિથી સભર ઇન્દુ બ હે ન ના પ્રોત્સાહન અને સહકારથી અિે ઉપરના બેડ (બંક બેડ)િાં હું સૂતી હતી ત્યાં સફાળી બેઠી થઇ િેં ૧૯૮૩િાં "એમશયન ફાઉન્ડે શ ન ફોર હે લ્ પ"ની સ્થાપના કરી હતી. પૂછ્યું ઇન્દુબહેન, કોણ... તિારાં ગ્રાન્ડ મચલ્ડ્રન યાદ આવ્યાં? એ આ જનસેવાલક્ષી કાયષિાં પ્રવૃત્ત આ સંસ્થાએ છેલ્લા ૩૫ વિષિાં ૬ વખતેભીની થયેલી આંખોના ખૂણા લૂછતાંઇન્દુબહેન બોલ્યાં; “ઓહ મિમલયન પાઉન્ડથી વધારે રકિનું દાન ભારતિાં ઠેર ઠેર અને તુંસાંભળી ગઇ... એ તો કંઇ નમહ...! પણ ઇન્દુબહેનના િનનો ભેદ આમિકાના કેન્યા, યુગાન્ડા, ગાના જાણવા િેંપણ હઠાગ્રહ કયોષ. અંતે અને બાંગ્લાદેશિાં અંધજનોના ભારતીય અસ્ મ િતા, અધ્યાત્િ સાથે સાથે સહ્દયતા, સત્ય, ઇન્દુબહેને એ ફોટો આલ્બિ િને જીવનિાં અજવાળાં પાથરવાિાં મનમિત્ત દેખાડ્યું. એિાં િહારાષ્ટ્ર (કદાચ પ્રેિ, કરૂણા હળીભળી િાતૃ મવરૂપ ધારણ કરેત્યારેવંદનીય બની છેએટલુંજ નમહ પણ જરૂરતિંદ, િુંબઇ કે પુણે)ની એક સ્કૂલનાં ગરીબ, અનાથોના નાથ બની એિના ઇન્દુ બ હે ન કકશોરભાઇ િહે ત ા જે વ ં ુ વ્યવિત્વ ઘડાય. અનાથ િાસૂિ ભુલકાંની તસવીરો જીવનિાં અજવાળા પાથરવા મનમિત્ત હતી. એ બાળકો ઇન્દુબેનને બન્યા છીએ એનો અિને આનં દ છે . ” વહાલથી ભેટેલો, એિની સાડીનો છેડો પકડી ઉભેલા, ખોળાિાં મદવંગત ઇન્દુબહેન આજે આપણી વચ્ચે નથી પરંતુ "િાતૃમદને" બેઠેલાંએવા એવા ફોટા જોતાંિારી આંખિાંઆંસુઉભરાઇ આવ્યાં. આ સેવાભાવી િાતાનેભાવાંજમલ અપષણ કરતાંએિના સુપુત્ર જેઓ એ પછી બે મદવસ જિષનીિાં ઇન્દુબહેન સાથેના સહેવાસે િેં એિને એમશયન ફાઉન્ડેશન ફોર હેલ્પ સાથેસમિય છેએ કેતનભાઇ િહેતા નખમશખ ઓળખ્યાં. તેિણે વાતોવાતિાં જણાવ્યું કે, “તારે ખરેખર કહે છે કે , “અિારાંિાતુશ્રી જેકંઇ િૂકસેવા કરતાંએની કોઇ જાણ ગરીબી કેવી હોય અને ભૂખ-તરસ શું હોય એ જોવું હોય તો કે ચચાષ અિારી સાથેકરતાંનમહ. સાચો સેવક િૌન રહી જનકલ્યાણ પંચિહાલના આમદવાસી મવસ્તારિાંજવુંજોઇએ. ઇન્દુબહેનેકહ્યુંકે, કરે એ જ સે વ ા ઇશ્વર સ્વીકારેછે. આજના િાતૃમદનેસૌ પમરવારજનો “હું અને િારા પમત કકશોરભાઇ પંચિહાલના એક અંતરીયાળ વતી હુંએટલુંજ કહી શકુંકે, “કોઇના સગા બનવુંએ તો ઇશ્વરના ગાિ​િાં ગયેલા ત્યાં સ્ત્રીઓને તન ઢાંકવા કપડાં નથી િળતાં. અિે હાથિાં છે પરંતુ કોઇના "વહાલા" બનવું એ તો તિારા હાથિાં છે. એવા હ્દય મવદારક "સીન" જોયાંહતાંકેઅિેઅિારી પાસેથેલાિાં કહે વ ાય છેકેઇશ્વર તો સુખ અનેદુ:ખ બન્નેઆપેછેજ્યારેિાતા તો જે કંઇ પહેરવાનાં કપડાં હતાં એ અને પૈસા બધું જ ત્યાં જ આપી પોતાના બાળકને સુખ નેસુખ જ આપેછે. દુ:ખનેએ પોતાના હ્દય દીધું. િારા પમતએ કોટ પહેયોષ હતો એ પણ ઉતારી ઝૂંપડી બહાર રૂપી સિં દ રિાં સિાવી લેછે. જેનેનેત્રહીનોનેદ્રમિ, રોગીઓનેદવા, ઠંડીિાંઠૂંઠવાતા વૃધ્ધનેઓઢાડી દીધો.” ઇન્દુબહેનેસંતાડી-સાચવી અનાથોનાંનાથ, મનરક્ષરોનેજ્ઞાન, બેઘરનેછત આપી િાણસાઇના રાખેલુંએ ફોટો આલ્બિ દીઠા પછી કલકતાિાંવિોષસુધી અનાથોનાં દીવા પ્રગટાવનાર મન:સ્વાથષસેમવકા સિા િાતાની કૂખેજન્િી અિારૂ નાથ અનેમવકલાંગ, ભૂખ્યાંગરીબનાંબેલી બનનાર િધર ટેરેસાને આયખુ ઉજળુકરનાર પૂજ્ય બાનેશત શત પ્રણાિ. તો અિે નજરે નથી દીઠાં પણ અિને આ સફેદ સાડીિાં ફરતાં “જે ન ે કોઇ ઉપિા આપી ન શકાય તેનું નાિ "િા"; જેને કોઇ ઇન્દુબહેનિાં િધર ટેરેસાની ઝાંખી થઇ. િાત્ર સાદગી, અનાશમિ સીિા નથી તેનું નાિ "િા"; જેને કયારેય પાનખર નડી નથી તેનું અને"સેવા હી પરિોધિષ"નો ભેખ ધારણ કરનાર ઇન્દુબહેન િહેતાને નાિ "િા"; આવી ફિ ત્રણ િા છે: પરિાત્િા, િહાત્િા અનેિા.” જેિણે નજીકથી ઓળખ્યાં છે એ પણ જરૂર કહેશે કે ગુજરાતની - કોકકલા પટેલ

અમ જનેતા કમળાબા, તમેતો ઇશ્વરનુંસ્વરૂપ છો

કોઇ કવિએ સાચું જ કહ્યું છે કે 'દેવ હાજર ન રહી શકે ઘરઘર થઈ જાય છે. પણ કમળાબાએ એ િ વિચાયુ​ું. કમળાબા પોતે એટલા મહીં, મા સ્વરૂપેજન્મ દેજીવતર મહીં.' દુવિયાિી દરેક જિેતા પોતાિા ખુદ્દાર અને સસધ્ધાંતપરસ્ત હતા કે તેમણે કદી કોઇની પાસે હાથ બાળક માટે દેિથી અોછી જરાય િથી. માતૃત્વનું સૌભાગ્ય સૌના લાંબો નહોતો કયોષ કે કદી કોઇ દેવું કયુ​ું ન હતું. મહેનત કરીને નસીબમાં નથી હોતું. જે જિેતાિા રિ અિે અસ્થથમાંથી આપણું તેમણે સ્વમાનથી પોતાના ચારેય સંતાનોનો ખૂબજ સુંદર રીતે ઉછેર ઘડતર થયુંછેતેમાતા પોતાિા બાળકિો ઉછેર જ િવિંતેિુંસંપૂણણપણે કયોષહતો. તેમણે બાળકોિી પાલિ​િાર મા અિે છત્રછાયા આપતા વિરાટ ઘડતર કરી સમાજિે એક એિી વિરલ વ્યવિ​િી ભેટ આપે છે જે પોતાિા પવરિાર કેસમાજ જ િવિંસમગ્ર માિ​િજાતિો વિકાસ કરેછે. િડલાિી જેમ બાપ થઈ બાળકોિે િતિ િારમાં જ રિીિે અિેક મુશ્કેલી િેઠીઅો િેઠીિેબાળકોિેભણાવ્યા, કિેિાય છે કે ઈશ્વર સુખ અિે દુઃખ બન્ને ગણાવ્યા અિેઆ દુવિયામાંમાથુઉંચુકરીિે આપે છે, પણ મા તો પોતાના બાળકોને જીિી શકેતેિા સક્ષમ બિાવ્યા. જાણેકેિ​િો માત્રને માત્ર સુખ અને ખુશી જ આપે છે. જન્મ લીધો િોય તેમ કમળાબાએ ખંત અિે જિેતા ભણેલી-ગણેલી િોય કેિા િોય પણ તે વિંમત રાખીિેસમગ્ર પવરિારિેફરીથી બેઠો બાળકોિા જીિ​િમાંખૂબ જ મિત્ત્િ​િી ભૂવમકા કરી દીધો. આિુંતો એક મા જ કરી શકે. ભજિતી િોય છે. બંિે મોટી વદકરીઓિે પરણાિી અિે અમારી જિેતા પણ આિી જ વિરલ મા સમય જતાં વદકરો અિે િાિી વદકરી િતી. અમારી જિેતા કમળાબેનની વ્યથાિું ૧૯૮૩માંલંડિ આવ્યા જ્યાંબંિેિા લગ્ન થઈ િણણિ કરુંતો આજેપણ અમારી આંખો ભરાઇ ગયા. વદકરાએ અવથણક સ્થથતી સારી થતાં આિે છે. અમારી માતા કમળાબેિ મોસાળ માિે પણ લંડિ બોલાવ્યા. તો જિેતા ધીયજ (કાનમ)માં માત્ર ૮ ધોરણ ભણેલા કમળાબાએ પણ વદકરા સાથે રિી તેિંુ ઘર િતા પરંતુ તેમિી અંતવરક સૂઝબૂઝ અિણણિીય િતી. માત્ર ૧૮ વષષની નાની ઉંમરે સંભાળ્યું ત્યારે તેમિે પવતિા શબ્દો યાદ મા-બાપની મરજીથી તેમના લગ્ન તા. ૨૫-૪આવ્યા કે"ગુલાબ જેવો સદકરો છે, તેમારા ૧૯૪૨માં નાર ગામના શ્રી મણીભાઈ ગુલાબને કાંટા ન વાગે તેમ સાચવજો.” મોતીભાઈ સાથે થયા િતા અિે િાિી ઉંમરે બિેિો પણ એકિો એક ભાઈ િોિાથી લાડ સાસરે આવ્યા િતા. કમિસીબે તેમિા પ્યારમાં કમી િ રાખતી. આજે ભગિાિ​િી સાસરામાં મોટું કે િવડલ કિેિાય તેિું કોઈ કૃ પાથી ભાઈિા ઘરેપણ લિ અિેકુશ જેિા કમળાબેન પટેલ િતું િ​િીં, સાસુ-સસરા પણ િવિં. િાિા બે વદકરાઅો થયા. જેમિો ઉછેર કરિામાં જન્મઃ ૩૧ જુલાઈ ૧૯૨૫ વદયર અિેિણંદ િતા. ગામ: નાર, પીયર: વીરસદ, મોસાળઃ ઘાયજ (કાનમ) અિે તેમિે સાચિ​િામાં કે ઘર સંભાળિામાં કમળાબાએ કદી પાછુિળીિેજોયુંિથી. આ સમજણ આપિાર કોઈ િડીલ િોય તો સારુ લાગે. પણ, સમય જતા નણંદ ડાહીબેન પરણીિે પવત સાથે દેશમાંઠંડી-ગરમી વેઠી શાળાએ જતા બેબાળકોનો ઉછેર કરવો અને આવિકા િથયા. તેમણે પોતાિા ભાઈઓ અિે ભાભીિે ૧૯૪૪માં તેમનુંલાલનપાલન કરવુંતેતો સૌનેખબર જ હશે. સૌિેક્ષમા કરિાર આ કરુણમયી મા કોઈિો િાંક ગુિો કહ્યા િગર આવિકા બોલાવ્યાં. કમળાબાિે પવત મણીભાઇ સાથે પારકા દેશમાં સ્થથર થિાિું િતું. ધીરે ધીરે તેમણે દુકાિ​િું કામ સંભાળ્યું અિે પવત પોતાિું જીિ​િ પ્રભુિું િામ લઈિે પસાર કરે છે. ૧૯૯૯થી કમળાબા સાથેખભેખભો મીલાિી ખૂબ જ મિેિત કરી. સમય જતાંપ્રભુકૃપાથી કાઉન્સીલિા ઘરમાં​ં એકલા રિે છે અિે પોતાિી જાતે જ સિારિો ઘરમાંપારણુંબંધાયુંઅિેએક વદકરીિો જન્મ થયો. પવરિારમાંખુશી િાથતો અિેબપોરિુંભોજિ બિાિી લેછે. સૌથી નાની સદકરી તેમની આિી. સમય જતા બીજી વદકરી આિી અિે થોડા સમય બાદ સારસંભાળ વધારે લે છે. છેલ્લા ૮ િષણથી મોટી વદકરી તેમિી પવરિારિો િારસ એટલે કે વદકરો આવ્યો. થોડા સમય બાદ સૌથી સારસંભાળ લઇ રિી છે. જિેતાિા માથેકારમા આઘાત પડિાિા બાકી િાિી વદકરીિો જન્મ થયો. એમ ઘરમાંત્રણ વદકરીઓ અિે૧ વદકરો િોય તેમ ૧ િષણપિેલાંજ મોટી દીકરીિા પવતએ દેિ છોડ્યો. દીકરીિા એમ પવરિાર પૂણણ થયો. સૌિો આિંદ અિે િેતપૂિણક લાડ કોડ ઉછેર જીિ​િ​િો પણ પવતિો વિયોગ થયા બાદ વિધિા દીકરીિું મોં જોતા જિેતાિું કાળજું કેિું કપાતું િશે. સદકરીને સહંમત આપવાનું મુશ્કેલ થિા લાગ્યો અિેરાજીખુશીથી બધાિુંજીિ​િ સુખમય થિા લાગ્યું. પણ સમયિી ગવત ન્યારી છે, ક્યારેશુંથિાિુંછેતેિી કોઈિેખબર હતુંછતાંય પોતેઆસુંલૂછી દીકરીનેહીંમત આપી જીવન જીવવાની િોતી િથી. કમળાબા માત્ર ૩૬ વષષના હતા ત્યારે યુવાન વયે શીખ આપતા અને મુશ્કેલીઓનો સામનો કઇ રીતે કરવો તે અચાનક જ મણીભાઇને શ્વાસની તકલીફ થઈ અને હાટટએટેકમાં શીખવતાંઆ જનેતા કમળાબાનેધન્ય છે. ચારેય ભાઇ બિેિોિુંઅિેતેમિા પવરિારજિોિુંસદાય વિત જોતી તેમણે દેહ છોડ્યો. પવતિી આ આઘાતજિક િસમી વિદાય થતાં જ કમળાબાિા માથેિાિી િયેજ ચાર બાળકોિી જિાબદારી આિી પડી. જિેતા કમળાબાિી આંખો િજુપોતાિા બાળકો પર અમી િરસાિી રિી ત્યારેતેમિી મોટી વદકરી માત્ર ૧૬ િષણિી િતી અિેચાર સંતાિો પૈક છે. અિેજેિા િસીબમાંમાથેમાિો િાથ ફરેછેતેદુવિયામાંસૌથી સુખી સૌથી િાિી વદકરી માત્ર ૬ માસિી િતી. ઉપર આભ અિેિીચેધરતી, િોય છે. માટેજ કહ્યુંછેનેમાનો હાથ પ્રભુનો સાથ ગણાય છે. માનું પારકો દેશ અિેકોઈિો આધાર િ​િીં, છતાંકમળાબેિેબાળકોિા મોં ઋણ તો કદી ચૂકવી શકાતું નથી પરંતુ મધસષ ડે પ્રસંગે અમે સૌ સામે જોઈ વિંમત રાખી પોતાિી સમજણ પ્રમાણે બાળકોિે ઉછેરિાિું બાળકો કમળાબાને વ્હાલથી વધાવીએ છીએ અને આ લેખ તેમને શરૂ કયુ​ું. તેઅો ચારેય બાળકોિેલઈિે૧૯૬૧માંભારત ગયા. દુવિયાિું સમસપષત કરીએ છીએ. ‘મા’ પૂણષ શબ્દ છે અને હરહંમેશા સદાયને માિ​િુંછેકેમા-બાપમાંકોઈ એક િા િોય તો બાળકોિી જીંદગી િકામી માટેસૌનુંભલુંઇચ્છતી જનેતા કમળાબાનેકોટી કોટી વંદન.

ડોકટર બનવામાં પ્રેરણાદાયી રહ્યાં. ૧૯૬૮માંલંડનમાંઆવીને કારના પાટટસ બનાવતી "સીમ્સ" કંપનીમાં બે વષષ કામ કયુ​ું. સ્નેહથી જતન કરનાર જનેતા ફેકટરીમાં વૈતરું કરે એ કયો સપૂત જોઇ િકે. કૌશિકભાઇએ નોકરી તો છોડાવી પણ ઉદ્યમિીલ સશવતાબાએ ૧૯૭૧માં મઝવેલ હીલમાં કન્ફેક્િનરી-સ્વીટ િોપ ખરીદી એકલા હાથેસફળતાપૂવક ષ એનુંસંચાલન કરેલ.ું ૧૯૭૭માંફીંચલી રોડ પર િોપ ખરીદી એ દરશમયાન જયંશતલાલ દેસાઇનું અણધાયુ​ું અવસાન થતાંસશવતાબાએ હામ હાયાષવગર પુત્રવધૂશદપીકાબહેન સાથે સતત ૧૨ વષષસુધી તનતોડ મહેનત કરી દુકાન ચલાવી. બન્નેશદકરાને ત્યાં સુખી-સંપન્ન પશરવાર જોયા પછી ૧૯૯૭માં સશવતાબાએ બીઝનેસમાંથી શનવૃશિ લઇ લીધી અને શદકરી સમોવડી પુત્રવધૂ શદપીકાબહેન સાથે આનંદમય જીવન શવતાવ્યુ.ં ૮૬ વષષ સુધી પ્રવૃિ​િીલ રહેતાં સશવતાબા હેન્ડન શસશનયર શસટીઝન કલબમાં પણ ખૂબ સશિય રહેતાં. આજેતેઓ સ્વદેહેહયાત નથી પણ એમના સદકમષનુંફળ એમની ત્રીજી પેઢી ખુિાલ જીવન સાથેસૌ હળીમળીનેરહેછે.

અમારા માતુશ્રી એક અણમોલ રતન સમાન હતાં. એમના દેહાવસાનને ૧૮ વષષના વ્હાણાં વાયા છતાં નાના મોટા સૌ કોઇ એમને દદલથી યાદ કરે છે. એમની દનષ્ઠા અનેજોકસ તથા દમદમક્રીની કળા દ્વારા હસવા-હસાવવાની દવદિષ્ઠતા અાજેય તેઑ અમારી વચમાંહયાત હોય એવો અહેસાસ કરાવેછે. એમની દીઘષ દ્રદિ, િાણપણ, દન:સ્વાથષ ત્યાગ ભાવ અાદી ગુણોએ સમાજમાં બદલાવ લાવવામાં અમૂલ્ય ફાળો આપેલ છે. સમાજની ઉપેદિત દવધવા બહેનોને સન્માન અપાવવા ઉપરાંત વદિલોના પ્રેરક પાત્ર બની માત્ર અમારા જ માતુશ્રી નદહ પરંતુ સમાજના મા તરીકેનું સન્માન મેળવવા અમારા માતુશ્રી સદ્ભાગી બન્યાં છે. તેઅો સદાય અમારી અાસપાસ સૂક્ષ્મદેહે રહી અમનેમાગષદિષન આપતાંરહેછે. આજના આ દદનેમાના ચરણોમાંકોટી કોટી વંદન. “મા તુઝેસલામ"

સી. બી. પટેલ ટનના વિવિધ શહેરોમાંમાતૃિંદના નીવમત્તેકેટલાક કાયયક્રમોનું આયોજન થયુ.ં આપણા સહુના સદભાગ્યેસુપ્રવસિ ગાવયકા સુશ્રી માયાબહેન દીપક ભારતથી ખાસ આ પ્રસંગે પધાયાય છે. કાયાયલયના મારા સાથીઓ તેમજ કંઇકેટલીય સંથથાના અગ્રણીઓ મન દઇને પવરશ્રમ ઉઠાિી રહ્યા છે. આની પૂિયભૂવમકામાં મારો માતુશ્રી પરત્િેનો લગાિ અને ઋણથિીકાર છે. માતૃશવિ પ્રત્યેની મારી આ ભાિના માત્ર મારા કમળાબા પૂરતી સીવમત નથી. આપણા સહુના હૃદયમાં ં માતાઓ પ્રત્યેજેઆદર, પ્રેમ, ભાિના રહેલા છેતેનેમૂવતયમત કરિા આ આયોજન થયું છે. સમગ્ર આયોજનમાં પ્રત્યક્ષ કે પરોક્ષ સહકાર આપી રહેલા નામી-અનામી અસંખ્ય િડીલો, કમળા બા માતાઓ-બહેનો-ભાઇઓનું સહુ કોઇનું ઋણ િંદનસહ માથે ચઢાિુંછુ.ં મારા માતુશ્રી કમળાબહેન બાબુભાઇ પટેલનો જન્મ એક સાધનસંપન્ન પવરિારમાં થયો હતો. માત્ર ૩૨ િષયની યુિા િયે મારા નાનાજી થિગગેવસધાવ્યા. નાનીમા (કાશીબા) નવડયાદમાં, ત્રણ દીકરી એક નાના દીકરા સાથેવપયરમાંથથાયી થયા. આ િાત સોએક િષયપિૂ ની ગે છે. તેમના મોટાભાઇ કાવલદાસ કલ્યાણભાઇ મોટા ગજાનું નામ. તેઓ નવડયાદના વસંહ ગણાતા હતા. વજલ્લા કોંગ્રેસના િડા, નવડયાદના મેયર અને ગાંધીજીના સત્યાગ્રહમાં હંમેશા અગ્રેસર. ૧૯૪૨ની ક્વીટ ઇંવડયા ચળિળ િેળા નવડયાદની અમદાિાદી બજારમાંવિશાળ સરઘસ નીકળ્યુ.ં કાવલદાસ દાદાએ તે સરઘસની આગેિાની લીધી હતી. આંદોલનકારીઓને વિખેરી નાખિા પોલીસ લાઠીચાજયનો આદેશ થયો. તે િેળાના વિવટશ રાજના પોલીસ તંત્રના એક અવધકારીનો દંડો કાવલદાસ દાદાની છાતીમાં લાગ્યો. દેખીતી ઇજા નહોતી, પણ મૂઢ માર હતો. થોડાક વદિસોમાં બીમાર પડ્યા. પક્ષઘાતનો ભોગ બન્યા. અને થિગગેસીધાવ્યા. મારા માતુશ્રી મોસાળમાંભારેસુખચેન અનેદોમ દોમ સાહ્યબી સાથે જાહોજજાલીમાં ઉછરેલાં. ગાંધીજી, સરદાર પટેલ, જિાહરલાલ નેહરુ જેિા મહાનુભાિોની આગતાથિાગતા કરિાનું, તેમને જમાડિાનું સદભાગ્ય મારા માતુશ્રીને બહુ નાની િયે સાંપડયું હતું. લગ્ન બાદ ૧૯૩૦ના અરસામાંમાતુશ્રી ભાદરણ આવ્યા. તેિેળા અમારા પવરિારની આવથયક સ્થથવત બહુ સિર હતી. ઘરમાં નોકરચાકરનો રસાલો અને આંગણાનેશોભાિતી હતી પ્રવતષ્ઠાનુંપ્રતીક ગણાતી ફોડડV8 કાર, જેનો રજીથટ્રેશન નંબર હતો BD 61. ગામલોકો કમળાબાને શેઠાણી કે બા કહીનેઆદર-સન્માન આપે. આ સિરતા ૧૯૪૪ સુધી ટકી રહી. પ...ણ પછી સમૃવિના િળતા પાણી થયાં. તેદરવમયાન બાનેટીબી થયો અને પાંચક ે િખત કંઠમાળનુંઓપરેશન પણ કરાિ​િુંપડ્યુ.ં પવરિારની આવથયક સિરતા એટલી નબળી પડી હતી કે અમારા પવરિારેભાડાના નાનકડા મકાનમાંજઇ િસિુંપડ્યુ.ં ૧૯૪૭ની આ િાત છે. નોકરચાકરની તો િાત છોડો, બધુંજાતેકરિુંપડતુંહતુ.ં આ સમયે મને ઘરકામ સવહતની પાવરિાવરક જિાબદારી ઉઠાિ​િાનો અિસર સાંપડ્યો. પરમાત્માની કૃપા અનેઅનેક લોકોના આશીિાયદથી આજેઅમે બે પાંદડે થયા છીએ. પરંતુ જાહોજલાલીમાં જીવ્યા પછી કપરા સમયમાં પણ કઈ રીતેજીિન જીિી શકાય તેકમળાબાએ શીખવ્યુંછે. દરેક સંતાનના વદલોવદમાગ પર માતા સાથે િીતાિેલા અઢળક થમરણો છિાયેલા હોય છે, પરંતુ આજે હું કમળાબા સાથે સંકળાયેલા થોડાક પ્રસંગ રજૂ કરિા માગું છું જેમાં તેમના મજબૂત મનોબળ, માનિતાપૂણય અવભગમ, સંજોગો સામે લડી લેિાની દૃઢતા સવહતના અનેક પાસાંઝળકેછે. ૧૧ મે, ૧૯૮૩ના રોજ ‘કમયયોગ હાઉસ’ની ઇમારતનું વિવધિત્ ઉદ્ઘાટન કરિા માટે નાયબ િડા પ્રધાન અને ગૃહ પ્રધાન વિવલયમ વ્હાઇટલો પધાયાયહતા. સેંકડો મહેમાનો પણ ઉપસ્થથત હતા. તેસમયેમેં નાયબ િડા પ્રધાનનેકહ્યુંહતુંકેઆજેહુંઇંગ્લીશમાંજેબોલી રહ્યો છું 28

તે મારા માતુશ્રી કમળાબા તો નહીં સમજી શકે, પરંતુ હું એટલું ખાસ કહેિા માંગુછુંકેજરૂર પડ્યેહુંતેમનેમારા શરીરનુંકોઇ પણ અંગ કે ઉપાંગ આપિા તૈયાર છુ.ં હુંતેમના માટેગમેતટે લો ભોગ આપું તો તેપણ ઓછો પડેએટલુંબવલદાન તેમણેઅમારા માટેઆપ્યું છે... સન ૧૯૫૩-૫૪ની િાત છે. હું શાળામાં અભ્યાસ કરતો હતો. મારી ફી માટે રૂવપયાની જરૂર પડી તો છેલ્લે તેમણે અડવધયામાંરહેલી સોનાની ચીપ પણ કાઢીનેિેચી નાખીનેફી ભરી દઇ અભ્યાસ અટકિા દીધો નહોતો. દરેક માતા કટોકટીના કપરા સમયે પોતાના સંતાનોના ઉજળા ભવિષ્ય માટે સિયથિ ન્યોછાિર કરિા માટે તૈયાર રહેતી હોય છે તેનું આ તો એક નાનકડુંઉદાહરણ છે. ધમયગરુ​ુ ઓ તો માત્ર શાસ્દદક ઉપદેશ આપતા હોય છે, પરંતુ માતા તો િાણી અનેિતયન બન્નેનો સમન્િય સાધીનેઆપણને જીિનના પાઠ ભણાિતી હોય છે. ૧૯૫૭માંહુંિડોદરા કોલેજમાંઅભ્યાસ કરતો હતો. તે સમયે અમારા ખખડધજ વનિાસથથાન નજીક જ વિદ્યાથથીઓનું એક બોડડીંગ હતું. આવથયક વિડંબણાથી ઘેરાયેલો એક વિદ્યાથથી જીિન ટુક ં ાિ​િા તૈયાર થયો હતો. તેનો સહાધ્યાયી દોડતો દોડતો અમારા ઘરે પહોંચ્યો. અમે જમી રહ્યા હતા. તેણે એકશ્વાસ િાત કરી. કમળાબાએ તરત જ મને કહ્યુંઃ જા દોડ... જઇને તેને (જીિ આપિા તૈયાર થયેલા વિદ્યાથથીને) લઇ આિ. હું પે’લા વિદ્યાથથીને સમજાિીને અમારા ઘરેલઇ આવ્યો. કમળાબાએ ‘સૌ સારા િાના થઇ રહેશ’ે કહીને તેનેસવધયારો આપ્યો. અમારી સાથેજમાડ્યો. િાતચીત કરીનેજાણ્યુંકે

તેણે પરીક્ષા માટે ૩૦ રૂવપયા ફી ભરિાની હતી અને તેનો િેંત થયો નહોતો. ફી ન ભરે તો પરીક્ષામાં બેસી ન શકે. કમળાબાએ મને કહ્યુંઃ ગમે તે થાય... તેની સમથયાનો રથતો કાઢ. અને તેની ફીની વ્યિથથા કરી આપી. આિા હતા કમળાબા, પારકાને પણ પોતાનું સંતાન ગણે તેિા... િડોદરામાંરહેતા હતા તેઘર કેિુંહતુ?ં ! ભરચક માળા જેિા પાંચ માળના મકાનમાંઅલગ અલગ ૯ પવરિારના ૪૦ લોકો િસિાટ કરતા હતા. નાની ઓરડીમાં અમારો પવરિાર િસે. ક્યાં વપયવરયે અને સાસવરયે દોમદોમ સાહ્યબી અને ક્યાં જજયવરત મકાનમાં ભાડે િસિાટ. વનિાસથથાન ભલેસાંકડુંહતુ,ં કમળાબાના મનમાંભારેમોકળાશ હતી. કપરી આવથયક કટોકટી છતાં મેં ક્યારેય તેમના ચહેરા પર વ્યગ્રતા, વ્યથા વનહાળ્યા નથી. એ જ જૂનો જુથસો, સંજોગો સામે લડી લેિાની ુ ેહસતાંહસતાંકહેતા કેમુશ્કેલી તો મક્કમતા. તેઓ અમનેભાઇભાંડન આવ્યા કરે, આપણા માટેતો આ જગ્યા પણ લક્ષ્મીવિલાસ પેલસ ે જ છે તેન ભૂલતા...

કમળાબાએ તેજમાનામાં‘વફા’ તરીકેઓળખાતી વના​ાક્યુલર ફાઇનલ તૈયાર થઇ ગયા હતા. કમળાબાએ અચધકારપૂવાક કહ્યું, ‘મને ગાડી સુધી પરીક્ષા પાસ કરી હતી. અભ્યાસમાંતેજપવી. વાંચનના બહુ શોખીન. ગુજરાત મૂકી જા...’ મહેમાનનેથોડી વાર રાહ જોવાનુંકહીનેકમળાબાની સુચનાનું સમાચાર તો આખેઆખું, શદદેશદદ વાંચી જાય. ક્યાંય પણ, કોઇ પણ અક્ષરશઃ પાલન કયુ.ું પરત ફયોાકેમહેમાનેમનેકહ્યુંઃ ગજબ છો તમેતો... માહોલમાં અનુકૂલન સાધી લેવામાં તેમને ગજબની ફાવટ હતી. ૧૯૮૩થી આ ઉંમરેપણ તમેકમળાબાનો પડ્યો બોલ ઝીલો છો... મારાથી સહજપણેજ ૨૦૦૩ સુધીમાં તેઓ ત્રણેક વખત વડોદરાથી લંડનના પ્રવાસે આવ્યા હતા. બોલાઇ ગયુંઃ જો તેમના શદદો ન માનુંતો દીકરો કેવો? સેન્ટ્રલ ચમડલસેક્સ હોશ્પપટલમાં સરસ ટ્રીટમેન્ટ ચાલી રહી હતી. બે તેમનેલંડન પણ ગોઠતુ.ં કમળાબાની વાત ચાલી રહી છેત્યારેએક અલગ જ પ્રકારની ઘટના નજર સામે તરવરી રહી છે. આ પ્રસંગમાં તેમના મક્કમ ચદવસ થઇ ગયા હતા. બોક્સીંગ ડેના ચદવસેઢળતી સાંજેતેઓ આરામ કરી રહ્યા હતા. તેથી તેમની સાથેહોશ્પપટલમાંરોકાયેલા પચરવારજનો હોશ્પપટલ મનોબળની ઝાંખી જોવા મળશે. ૧૯૯૯માંલંડન આવ્યા હતા ત્યારની વાત છે. ૮૯ વષાની વય. ઘૂટં ણની કેમ્પસમાંજ આવેલી શોપમાંકંઇક ખરીદી કરવા ગયા. હુંએક મંચદરમાંગયો સજારી કરાવી હોવાથી આરામ ચાલતો હતો. ગુજરાત સમાચારમાં વાંચ્યું કે હતો. તે૧૫-૨૦ ચમચનટના ગાળામાંશુંથયુંકેબાએ બૂમ પાડી. તરત જ નસોા પશ્ચચમ લંડનના ચચચઝક ચવપતારમાંઆવેલા ગનસાબરી પાકકમાંચેચરટી વોક અનેડોક્ટરો દોડી ગયા. ઇમરજન્સી ટ્રીટમેન્ટ શરૂ કરી. કમળાબાના બેડથી યોજાઇ છે. હોશ્પપટલમાં ની સજારી ચવભાગ માટે જરૂરી ભંડોળ એકત્ર ત્રીજા જ નંબરના બેડ પર એક ગુજરાતી મચહલા સારવાર માટેએડમીટ થયા કરવાનો મુખ્ય ઉદ્દેશ હતો. મનેપૂછ્યુંઃ મારેપણ આમાં(ચેચરટી વોકમાં) ભાગ હતા. ડોક્ટરો-નસોાની દોડાદોડી જોઇને તેમને પચરશ્પથચતની ગંભીરતાનો અંદાજ આવી ગયો. બહેનેપોતાના સંતાનોનેકહ્યુંકેકમળાબાનેયમુનાષ્ટક લેવો છે... મારાથી ચાલી શકાય? ની સજારીને પાંચ સપ્તાહ જ થયા હોવાથી મારો સહજ જવાબ હતો કેઃ સાંભળવાનું બહુ ગમે છે તે મને ખબર છે. આપણે સહુ યમુનાષ્ટક ગાઇએ. ડોક્ટરનેપૂછવુંપડે... તેહા પાડેતો તમેઆવી શકો... તરત જ ડોક્ટરનો તેમણેયમુનાષ્ટક શરૂ કયુ,ું અનેકમળાબાએ પવગાભણી પ્રયાણ... આ સમયે કોન્ટેક્ટ કયોા. કમળાબાની ઇચ્છા, અનેસચવશેષ તો જુપસો જોઇનેડોક્ટરે તેઓ ૯૩ વષાના હતા. પણ ઉત્સાહભેર કહ્યુંઃ વ્હાય નોટ?! અરેબાની ઇચ્છા હોય તો જરૂર લઇ જ આ લેખમાં રજૂ થયેલા જીવનપ્રસંગો, ઘટનાઓ ભલે મારા અંગત જવા જોઇએ. થોડુક ં ધીરેધીરેચાલે... એક કકલોમીટરનુંઅંતર છે... વાંધો જીવનના હોય, મારા અનેકમળાબાના નામેલખાયા હોય, પણ તેલાગુતો નહીં આવે. સહુકોઇનેપડેછે. નામ-રૂપ જૂજવા અંતેતો હેમનુંહેમ હોય... તેઉચિ અહીં જેના હૈયેહામ હોય તેનેતો ચહમાલય જેવડા અવરોધ પણ નડતા નથી યથોચચત જણાય છે. મા મારી હોય કેતમારી... મા તેમા જ હોય છેનેબીજા ે ા લાગણી નીતરતો ખરુંન?ે ! અમેકમળાબાના ચનણાય અંગેઅખબારમાંજાહેર ચનવેદન રજૂકયુ.ું બધા વગડાના વા. માતા અનેસંતાન વચ્ચેનો નાતો હંમશ ચેચરટી વોકમાં સામેલ થવાની વાત કરી અને ચેચરટી માટે ટહેલ નાખી. જ રહેવાનો - અત્ર તત્ર સવાત્ર... ઉદારમના વાચકોએ ૧૫૦૦ પાઉન્ડની પપોન્સરશીપ આપી. કડાધડા કમળાબા આજેભલેસદેહેઆ પૃથ્વી પર ન હોય, પરંતુમનેચવશ્વાસ છે કમળાબા હરખભેર ચેચરટી વોકમાંજોડાયા. અનેઉત્સાહભેર ચાલ્યા. કે તેઓ તેમના ઉમદા વ્યચિત્વ થકી, વાણી-વતાન-ચવચાર થકી, - મારા ૨૦૦૩માંચિસમસના બેચદવસ પૂવવેમારા ફ્લેટમાંએક મહાનુભાવ મળવા પચરવારજનોથી માંડીને તેમના સંપકકમાં આવેલા સહુ કોઇના અંતરમનમાં આવ્યા હતા. અમારી વાતચીત ચાલી રહી હતી. તે દરચમયાન અંદરના ધબકી રહ્યા છે. આજેપહેલી વખત માતુશ્રી કમળાબાનેઅનેતેદ્વારા સમગ્ર રૂમમાંથી બુલદં અવાજે બૂમ પડીઃ ‘ચંદ્રકાન્ત અહીં આવ...’ હું તરત અંદર માતૃશચિનેશાશ્દદક અંજચલ આપવાનો આ અવસર સાંપડ્યો છેતેના માટે પહોંચ્યો. હચનાયાની બીમારીથી પીડાતા કમળાબાને મેચડકલ ચેક-અપ અને હું માતૃવંદના કાયાિમનું આયોજન કરી રહેલા સાથીદારોનો સદૈવ ઋણી ટ્રીટમેન્ટ માટેએપોઇન્ટમેન્ટ હોવાથી પચરવારજનો તેમનેહોશ્પપટલ લઈ જવા રહીશ.

વૈકુંઠ શબ્દ પણ ટૂંકો પડેએવી જગતની કરુણામૂર્તિમાતાઓનેશત્ શત્ વંદન

માયા દીપક મારી ‘મા’ મંગુબહેન (બહેન)નો જન્મ ઉિર ગુજરાતના મહેસાણા જજલ્લાના નાનકડા ગામ લીંચ મુકામે ૧૯૩૮માં થયો હતો. મમ્મીનેઅમેબધા ‘બહેન’ કહીનેસંબોધીએ છીએ. તેમના જિતાનું નામ દેવચંદભાઈ િટેલ અને માતા અમથીબહેન. એ જમાનામાં દીકરીઓનેબહુ ભણાવવામાંઆવતી નહોતી. મારી મમ્મી એ જમાનામાં આખા ગામમાંસૌિથમ સાતમુંધોરણ િાસ થઇ હતી ત્યારેબધેવાહ વાહ થઇ હતી. ભણવામાંખૂબ જ તેજસ્વી હોવા છતાંછોકરીઓનેવધુનહીં ભણાવતા હોવાથી તેમણેઅભ્યાસ છોડવો િડ્યો હતો.

જનેતા મંગુબહેનનેશાલ અોઢાડતા માયાબહેન

મમ્મીનો ઉછેર સાધનસંિન્ન િજરવારમાંથયો હતો અનેતેમના લગ્ન લાંઘણજના વતની શ્રી િો. જવનોદભાઈ સાથે થયા હતા. લગ્ન િછી મમ્મીએ જેઠના દીકરા-દીકરીઓના લગ્નની ખરીદીથી માંડીનેલગ્નિસંગે ઘરના રસોડાની જવાબદારી સજહત સાસરી િક્ષની તમામ કૌટુંજબક જવાબદારીઓ આનંદભેર ખડે િગે જનભાવી હતી. એ જમાનમાં માત્ર લગ્નિસંગે જ રસોઈયો રાખવામાં આવતો હતો. િરંતુ માંડવો હોય કે ગરબા દેક િસંગે મહેમાનો અને િજરવારજનોના જવશાળ સમૂહ માટે મમ્મી જાતેજ રસોઈ કરતા. િપ્િાની નોકરી શહેરમાં થઇ િછી ‘બહેન’નો ખરા અથથમાં સંઘષથ શરૂ થયો. ‘બહેન’ મને ઘણી વાર કહેતી કે ‘મેં અને તારા િપ્િાએ ૮ બાય ૮ની એક ભાડાની ઓરડીમાંથી અમારા નવા જીવનની શરૂઆત કરી હતી. રસોઈ કરી અમેજમી લઈએ અનેિછી બધા વાસણ અભરાઈ ઉિર ચઢાવી - રૂમ ચોખ્ખો કરી ત્યાં જ િથારી કરીને સૂઈ જઈએ.’ િપ્િાએ ઘણા શહેરોમાંિોફેસર તરીકેફરજ બજાવી, તેથી મમ્મીનેઘણા શહેરોમાં સામાન ફેરવવાનો થતો. ‘બહેન’ મને કહેતી કે એ વખતે િોફેસસથના િગાર બહુ જ ટૂંકા તેથી બચત બહુ ઓછી થાય. િણ ઘણા સંઘષથિછી તેમણેકડીમાંએક મકાન બનાવ્યું. અમેત્રણ ભાઈ-બહેન - મોટો ભાઈ ઉિેન્દ્ર, હુંવચ્ચેઅનેનાનો ભાઈ ભદ્રેશ. અમારુંફેજમલી બોન્ડીંગ ‘બહેન’ના થકી જ છે. ‘બહેન’ે અમને શીખવ્યું છે કે ગમે તેટલી મુશ્કેલીઓ આવે, િણ તમારા ભાઇ-બહેન વચ્ચેનો િેમ જરા િણ ઓછો ના થાય તેનું ધ્યાન રાખજો. મોટા ભાઈ ઉિેન્દ્ર (યુએસએ)ના િત્ની તારા જ્યારેલગ્ન કરીનેઆવ્યા ત્યારેફક્ત ૧૨મું ધોરણ િાસ હતા. તેઓ ભણવામાં હોંજશયાર હતા. મમ્મી-િપ્િાએ એમને અમારા ઘરે આવ્યા િછી બી.એસ.સી. અને બી.એડ. સુધીનો અભ્યાસ કરાવ્યો હતો. એમના ભણવાની સાથે સાથે તેમના દીકરા અંકકતની જવાબદારી િણ ઊઠાવી હતી. બહેને અમારા સૌમાં ખૂબ જ સુંદર સંસ્કારોનું જસંચન કયુ​ું હતું. એટલા જ વહાલથી તેમણે અમારા દીકરા-દીકરીઓનું િણ સંસ્કાર જસંચન કયુ​ુંછે. અમારા િજરવારની ત્રીજી િેઢી શરૂ થઈ ગઈ છેઅનેતેઓ બધા બાળકોમાંજિય છે. અમેજરકા-લંડનથી બા સાથેબધા દરરોજ વાતો કરેછે. મારી ગીત-સંગીતની કારકકદદીમાંમારી ‘બહેન’નો ફાળો બહુ જ છે. મેં સંગીત શીખવાની શરૂઆત નાના ગામ કડીથી કરી. સંગીતના વધુઅભ્યાસ માટેમાટેમારેમહેસાણા જવુંિડતું. હુંદર બુધવાર અને શુક્રવારે મારી સ્કૂલમાંથી ૪ જિરીયડ ભરીને બસ સ્ટેન્ડ આવું અને 30

‘બહેન’ ઘરેથી બસ સ્ટેન્ડ આવે. બિોરે૧ વાગ્યેઘરના બધા કામ જાતે િતાવીને બસ સ્ટેન્ડ િર આવીને મારી રાહ જોતા જ હોય. અમે બન્ને સાથે ૩ વાગ્યે મહેસાણા િહોંચીએ. હું સંગીત શીખું ત્યાં સુધી એ મારી રાહ જોતાંબેસી રહેઅનેિછી સાંજે૬ વાગ્યાની બસમાંઅમેસાથેસાંજે ૭-૩૦ વાગ્યે મહેસાણાથી કડી ઘરે િરત આવીએ. આવ્યા િછી તેઓ બધાનુંજમવાનુંબનાવે. આવો ક્રમ લગભગ એક વષથસુધી ચાલ્યો. િછી તો એમણેમનેદુજનયાદારીની બધી જ વાતોની સમજ આિી દીધી અને હું એકલી ઘરે િરત આવું ત્યારે સાંજે બસ સ્ટેન્ડ િર ચાલતાં જ મને લેવા આવે. સંગીતના કોઈ િણ કાયથક્રમ ચાહેલોકલ હોય કેબહારગામ હોય, હંમેશા મારા મમ્મી-િપ્િા બંનમ ે ાંથી એક મારી સાથેહોય જ. મને યાદ છે કે હું કોલેજમાં હતી ત્યાં સુધી મને રસોઈ કે ઘરકામ નહોતુંફાવતું. મમ્મી મનેશીખવાડવાનો િયત્ન કરેતો િપ્િા એનેકહી દે કેતારા િપ્િાના ઘરેતેંકામ કરેલું? તનેઆવડી ગયુંને? એમ માયાને િણ આવડી જશે. એ િછી મમ્મી મને કાંઈ કામ ના બતાવે. મમ્મીએ અમને અિાર સ્નેહ આપ્યો છે, ગુસ્સે થયા વગર. ઘણી વખત હું ઘરનું કોઇ કામ ના કરું તો બોલે િણ ખરા કે ‘સાસરે આવું નહીં ચાલે....’ વગેરે વગેરે. મમ્મી ખૂબ સહનશીલ હોવા છતાં આખાબોલા - તડાક કરીનેસાચુંહોય તેબોલી નાખે. એમનેકોઇના મોંઢા ઉિર કહેવુંહોય તો સમય આવેકહી િણ દે. ‘બહેન’ને‘રસોઈ શો’ ખૂબ જ ગમે. મારા અનેદીિકના લવ મેરેજ થયા હતા. મારી િસંદગીથી દીિકને મેંશોધ્યા હતા. અમેઆયથસમાજમાંલગ્ન કયાથહતા. હુંિરણીનેદીિકના ઘરે આવી િછી મને ત્યાં બીજી ‘મા’ મળ્યા હતા. િૂ. રમીલાબહેન (દીિકના મમ્મી). તેમણે એમની જજંદગી કુંવારા હતા ત્યારે ખૂબ જ સાહ્યબીમાંિસાર કરી હતી. લગ્ન બાદ તેમનેિણ ખૂબ જ સંઘષથવેઠવો િડ્યો હતો. લગ્ન િછી એમણેમનેકોઈ કામ નથી ચીંધ્યુંકેતુંઆ કર કેતેકર. હુંગીત-સંગીતના િોગ્રામ કરવા જતી ત્યારેિણ કોઈ જદવસ તેમણેમનેએવુંનથી કહ્યુંકેબધાની રસોઈ બનાવીનેજાવ. મારી ગીતસંગીતની િવૃજિ એમનેખૂબ જ ગમતી. તેઓ હંમેશા કહેતા કે‘હુંિણ તારા જેવું જ ગાતી હતી, િરંતુ મને સમય અને સંજોગો અનુકૂળ ના મળ્યા તેથી મારી ગીત-સંગીતની િવૃજિ ઘરમાંજ રહી ગઈ.’ મારા િજત દીિક તેમના નાના શ્રી જગરધરભાઈ િંચાલ સાથે મોસાળમાં ઉછયાું હતા. દીિકના નાના િુજનત મહારાજના િરમ જશષ્ય હતા. તેથી તેઓ ભજનો ખૂબ લખતાંઅનેમારા મમ્મી (સાસુ) િહેલેથી એ ભજનો ગાતા. સંગીતકાર બેલડી શંકર-જયકકશનના ગીતો એમને બહુ ગમે. સાસરીના ઘરમાંસંગીત ભરિૂર હતુ,ં જેનો ફાયદો મનેમળ્યો. મારી ગીત-સંગીતની િવૃજિનેસાચો વેગ લગ્ન િછી મળ્યો. મમ્મી અનેિૂ. નાનાએ દીિકમાંજેસંસ્કારોનુંજસંચન કરેલુંએ સંસ્કાર વડેદીિકેમારી સંગીતની િવૃજિનેઉજાશ આિીનેખૂબ જ વેગ આપ્યો. આજેમધસથડેિસંગેહુંમારાંબંનેમમ્મીઓનેહૃદયથી વંદન કરુંછું. એમનુંઋણ સ્વીકારવાનો અવસર ‘ગુજરાત સમાચાર’ના માતૃ વંદનાના જવશેષાંક દ્વારા મનેમળ્યો એ બદલ બધાનો હુંખૂબ જ આભાર માનુંછું. માના આશીવાથદથી જ માણસ મહાન બનેછે. માનુંસ્થાન સવવેદેવોમાં ઉચ્ચ સ્થાનેછેઅનેવૈકઠું શબ્દ િણ એના માટેટૂક ં ો િડે. આવી જગતની દરેક કરુણામૂજતથમાતાઓનેમારા શત્ શત્ વંદન...

Jaspar Centre - A Recreation Hub for the Asian Community

A haven for the elderly

How the Jaspar Centre came about?

The Jaspar Foundation was set up by Raj Pankhania in 2009 Jaspar Centre provides a recreational platform for elderly parents and youngsters to stay connected to their community members.

Raj Pankhania has lived in Harrow for over 35 years and so is familiar with the area. Over time he began to notice our elderly sitting on park benches and in shopping malls just to pass the time as they had to nowhere to go during the day.

He thought if his parents were around today where would they go and what would they do on a daily basis?

So in 2009 he set up The Jaspar Foundation to support various elderly groups, promoting good health, wellbeing and organised social activities in order to enrich the lives of our elderly and entire community.

This then progressed to a realisation that a permanent place/hub was severely lacking where our elderly could sit in a warm and cosy environment outside the comfort of their home, flourish friendships and feel a sense of belonging over a hot cup of tea.

So this went on to the opening

of the Jaspar Centre in July 2013.

The building has been designed with the community in mind.

Mandir, Halls, offices and rooms have been provided for supervised health and cultural activities such as bhajans, yoga, zumba, computer classes arts and crafts. The centre is a hub for daily/weekly activities also providing hot lunches, medical advice and language courses if desired. All the facilities within the building are also available for private hire.

The Jaspar Centre has now been serving the community and most importantly, our mums, grandmas for nearly 4 years now and hopes to be able to put a smile on our mums faces onm a daily basis for many years to come.

Why is the centre called JASPAR Centre?
