Faith in ourselves and optimism for future

Happy Diwali to all our readers, their families and friends. This is not a routine expression, at this time of the year, but I sincerely convey to all of you with utmost expression of gratitude that without your support, we would not have been able to reach the present stage of ABPL. Many thanks for all round blessings.

Diwali has evolved over the ages- at least 7000 years of written evidence are available. Hindus, Jains and Sikhs in India and abroad celebrate Diwali for various reasons. These 3 faiths have grown out of Sanatan Dharma (the Universal faith) which again is more of a way of life, than a faith tradition based on a single prophet or a scripture.

Vasudeva Kutumbakam- the world is one family- is perhaps the most appropriate and simple definition of Sanatan Dharma- now commonly known as Hinduism.

With the settlement of our ancestors into hamlets and villages, based essentially on agriculture and gradual process of formation of urban conurbations, both the ethos as well as celebrations have kept on changing, evolving.

Diwali is at least a week long celebration. The worship of the Goddess of Wealth, Lakshmi is not the wealth but also for reminding oneself about the values of economic development, wealth creation and accumulation. Dhanteras is the dedicated day for Lakshmi worship which falls on 21st October, according to the Vikram Samvat 2070 of the Hindu calendar.

22 October is called Kali Chaudas, a way to worship the Goddess of Strength, to celebrate valour and to get rid of superstitions, apprehensions and fears.

Diwali is on 23 October, Thursday. The Hindu New Year (Vikram Samvat 2071) begins on Friday 24th October.

Bhai Beej (Brother's Day) is on Saturday 25 October.

This needs more elaboration. In the rural life, which was woven around farming, the raksha bandhan (tying of thread on brother's right wrist) was celebrated just before the harvest. Inevitably the sisters visited their brothers- in a subtle way, to remind of their presence.

On Bhai Beej, the brother is expected to visit the sister's residence, have a proper meal and perhaps look around to see how the family is settled. You see, our ancestors were able to do things in a subtle way, and they were quite clever.

It is not enough that the daughter or sister is given away, but one needs to be concerned, without too much

વિ​િમ સંિત ૨૦૭૧ના ઉંબરે ઉભો છું ત્યારે અંતરમાં કેટલાય આશાઅરમાનનાંમોજાંઉછળી રહ્યા છે. િીતેલુંિષષભલેઆવથષક મંદી, આતંકિાદ, કુદરતના કોપ સાથે િીત્યું, પણ આ તો નૂતન િષષ. નિું િષષ હંમેશા ઉમંગઉલ્લાસ લઇનેઆિતુંહોય છે. કમષભૂવમ વિટનમાંઅથષતંત્રની ગાડી પાટા પર ચઢી રહી હોિાના ઉજળા અણસાર છે તો જન્મભૂવમ ભારતમાં શાસનપલ્ટા સાથેઆશાનો સોનેરી સૂયોષદય થયો છે. જન્મભૂવમ અનેકમષભવૂમ - બન્નેસાથે આપણે અતૂટ નાતો જાળવ્યો છે. એક પર આપણે ચાલતાં શીખ્યા તો બીજા પર (અસ્તતત્િ ટકાિ​િા માટે) ઝઝૂમતાં શીખ્યાં. જોકે આ બન્ને ભૂવમ સાથે આપણો નાતો જોડતું તત્િ છે - આપણો સંતકારિારસો. વિટનમાં િસતાં આપણા ભારતીય ભાઇભાંડુઓનો શરૂઆતનો બહુમતી સમુદાય આવિકાથી અહીં આિીનેિતયો. આ ‘તથળાંતર’નેપચાસ િષષપૂરા થિા આવ્યા છે. અડધી સદીનો આ લાં....બો સમયગાળો જાણે પલક-ઝપકારે િીતી ગયો હોય તેિંુ લાગે છે. આ સુિણષ િેળાએ અિસર આવ્યો છે આપણા સંતકારિારસા વિશે વચંતન કરિાનો. પૂિષ આવિકાના ટાંગાવનકા, યુગાન્ડા, કેન્યા જેિા દેશો તિાતંત્ર્યપૂિવે વિવટશ સામ્રાજ્યના તાબામાં હતા. ૧૯૬૦માં આ દેશોમાં િસતાં આપણે સહુ ભારતીયો બહુધા વિવટશ પાસપોટટધારક હતા. હજારોના બેન્ક એકાઉન્ટ પણ વિટનમાં હતા. તે િેળા વિટનમાં ભારતીયોની સંખ્યા ૫,૦૦૦ પણ નહોતી. આજે આશરે ૧૮ લાખ ભારતિંશી િજાજનો આ દેશમાં િસે છે. તે દૃવિએ જોઇએ તો, પહેલી અનેબીજી પેઢીએ તેની જિાબદારી સુપેરેવનભાિી છેપછી તેવશિણ હોય, નોકરી-ધંધા હોય કેવ્યિસાયનુંિેત્ર હોય. આપણેશાંવતવિય િજા છીએ, ગુનાખોરી કે રાષ્ટ્રવિરોધીના િેત્રે બહુ ઓછા છે. આપણા સમાજબાંધિો ગુણગ્રાહી છે. કદાચ આ જ કારણ છેઅન્ય સમાજના લોકો પણ આપણા ભણી આકષાષય છે. તમે આસપાસમાં નજર કરશો તો જણાશે કે આપણા સમાજમાંઆંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય લગ્નોનુંિમાણ િધી રહ્યુંછે. ભારત િષષમાંતથળાંતર સહજ રીતેથતુંઆવ્યુંછે. માનિજીિન િધુતથાયી થતાં ગ્રામ્યજીિન ઉદ્ભવ્યું. કાળિમે શહેરી વિતતારો િધતાં ગયાં. અત્યારે ભારતમાં, અને સવિશેષ ગુજરાતમાં, ૩૨ ટકા જેટલાં િજાજનો શહેરી વિતતારમાં િસે છે. વિટનમાં આપણી િસાહત જ્યાં તથાયી થઇ છે (બૃહદ્ લંડન, લેતટરશાયર, લેન્કેશાયર, િેતટ વમડલેન્ડ, યોકકશાયર કેિેલ્સ) તેના અમુક વિતતારોમાંઆપણુંિમાણ િધુજોિા મળેછેતેમાંલગારેય નિાઇ પામિા જેિુંનથી. એક જમાનામાંભારતીયોનુંવિદેશમાંતથળાંતર મુખ્યત્િેઆંધ્ર અને તાવમલ િદેશોમાંથી શ્રીલંકા અને પૂિષના દેશોમાં મોટા િમાણમાં થતું હતું. આ સંદભવે લગભગ ૧૫૦૦ િષષ લાંબો ઇવતહાસ ગ્રંથતથ જોિા મળે છે. પસ્ચચમ ભારતમાંથી, સવિશેષ કચ્છ, કાવિયાિાડ અને તળ ગુજરાતમાંથી - આપણા વિદેશગમનના કેટલાક સાંતકૃવતક વનયંત્રણોના કારણે - િેપાર-ધંધા માટે િહાણિટું તો સૈકાઓથી થતું હતું, પણ કાયમી તથળાંતર છેલ્લાં ૧૫૦-૨૦૦ િષષની િવિયા ગણાિાય છે. શરૂઆતમાં પૂિષ આવિકા, દવિણ આવિકા તો આપણા માટે જાણે ‘બીજા ઘર’ બની ગયા. પણ જરા વિટનના આપણા તથળાંતર તરફ પણ નજર નાખી લઇએ. િષષ૧૯૬૨માંવિવટશ પાલાષમેન્ટેકોમનિેલ્થ ઈવમગ્રેશન એક્ટ પસાર કયોષ તે અગાઉ કોમનિેલ્થના કોઇ પણ દેશનો નાગવરક વિના રોકટોક ગ્રેટ વિટનમાંઆિ-જા કરી શકતો હતો, કાયમી િસિાટ માટેરહી શકતો હતો. પહેલી અનેબીજી પેઢીએ સાચેજ ખૂબ સંઘષષકયોષછે. દોરીલોટો લઇનેઆિેલા આપણા િડિાઓના સામર્યષઅનેપવરશ્રમના કારણે, સવિશેષ માતૃશવિના અકલ્પનીય અનુદાનથી, સંતાનોએ ઉચ્ચ વશિણ અને તાલીમ િાપ્ત કયાષ. િેપાર-ધંધામાં િ​િેશ કયોષ. એટલું જ નહીં, કેટલાય િેત્રે સંગીન વસવિઓ હાંસલ કરી. તેમના સંતાનોએ જાણેિગવતના પંથેહનુમાનકૂદકો માયોષછે. આ વિકાસયાત્રાના પગલેપગલેજ જીિનમાંપવરિતષનનો પણ િારંભ થયો તેમાંકંઇ નિાઇ નથી. િડા િધાન માગષરટે થેચરેએક િાર એબીપીએલ ગ્રૂપના િકાશન ‘એવશયન વબઝનેસ’માં લખેલા એક લેખમાં કહ્યું હતું - વિટનના નાનામાં નાના ગામમાં પણ તમને ભારતિંશી ન્યૂઝ એજન્ટ, ફામષસીતટ કે ડોક્ટર મળી જાય તો જરાય નિાઇ પામતા નહીં. કહેિાનુંતાત્પયષએટલુંજ કે આપણે કોઇ બંવધયાર સમાજ (Ghetto)માં માનતા નથી. આ ભૌગોવલક વિતતરણ સાથેજ વશિણ, િેપાર-ઉદ્યોગ તથા અન્ય પવરબળો પણ જોડાયાં.

COMMENT interference into her well being. Such traditions have proved to be of enormous value, not only to sustain the bond, but equally to nurture the culture itself.

Our ancestors moved outward, but mainly within the local vicinity in India. Over the last few centuries, Indian migration abroad began in the earnest. In the UK, the first wave of non white migrants came in the 1950s, mainly from the Caribbean countries. They were recruited by the British government to serve in health, transport and heavy industries.

Till 1962, according to some statistics, there were just a few thousand people of South Asian communities. The Commonwealth act of 1962, coupled with independence of Tanganyika, Uganda and Kenya, increased the flow of British passport holders, from East Africa to the British shores.

Amongst all the migrant communities, the Indians as reported widely, have succeeded very well in education, professions, entrepreneurship, and several other aspects of life in a peaceful and law abiding manner. They have assimilated well in the British traditions, very few of them engage in violence or other anti national activities.

Our culture has also helped us to perform rather well.

With the change in the family structures, with more and more marriages and relationships outside the former orbit, inevitably there are challenges. Wherever there are challenges, there are opportunities too.

Hinduism does not proclaim its supremacy. Along with the passage of time and the place of one's settlement, it's natural to expect adjustments and evolutions to ensure sustenance of our traditional capabilities. With the positive environment of Great Britain, culture or even faith traditions, the followers of Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism find their culture complimenting with the traditions of harmony, tolerance and humanity.

The main source of this cultural input is surely the home, parents and even extended families. Religious places and community organisations can help, but it is upto that nuclear family, the parents, elders have a prime opportunity as well as a responsibility to mould younger generations to lead a better quality of life.

It is a nurturing process. One cannot have the roses without the thorns. But the rewards are limitless. To help sustain what has enabled us to achieve so much better is very important, not easy, but not impossible too. Let's all have faith in ourselves and optimism for the future.

Diwali is a time not only to take stock of the past year, but an ideal opportunity to plan something better, durable, dignified and phenomenal for our future, for our offsprings and our beloved Great Britain.

આ સંજોગોમાં, સ્વાભાવવક છેકે, આપણાંસંતાનો પરંપરા અનુસાર જ્ઞાવત કે અમુક વતુ​ુળમાંજ લગ્ન કરેતેસંવભવત નથી. એક ગણતરી િમાણે, ૨૫ ટકા કે વધુ િમાણમાં આપણા યુવક-યુવતીઓના જીવનસાથી અન્ય સમાજમાંથી આવેછે. જીવન એક અવવરત િવાહ છે. આપણાં સૌનું માનસ પે’લા ડુંગરમાંથી નીકળેલા ખળ ખળ ઝરણાં જેવંુ ગણી શકાય. વચ્ચેખડક આવેકેબીજો કોઇ અવરોધ... તેનો િવાહ અટકતો નથી. તે તો બસ પોતાનો રસ્તો શોધીને આગળ ધપતું જ રહે છે. રસ્તામાં બીજાં ઝરણાં તેમાં ભળતાં રહે છે. અને આગળ જતાં તે જીવંત નદીનું રૂપ ધારણ કરે છે. દવરયા સાથેના વમલન સુધીની યાત્રા દરવમયાન તેનું સ્વરૂપ બદલાતુંરહેછેતેનો ગુણધમુબદલાતો નથી. યાત્રા દરવમયાન તેતેના લક્ષ્યાંક તરફ આગળ જ નથી ધપતુંરહેતું, પણ ખેતીવાડી ઉપરાંત સમગ્ર માનવજીવન માટે એક યા બીજી રીતે િેરક-પોષક પણ બનતું રહે છે. આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય કે આંતરજ્ઞાતીય લગ્નનુંપણ કંઇક આવુંજ છે. જ્ઞાવત કેસમાજ બહાર લગ્નનું િમાણ વધેએટલેસંસ્કારવારસો તેનુંસ્વરૂપ પણ બદલેતેસ્વાભાવવક છે, તે િેરક-પોષક બનવાનો ગુણધમુનથી ગુમાવતો. મેં કેટલાક અભ્યાસ ગ્રંથો વાંચ્યા છે, જેમાં સ્પષ્ટ થાય છે કે વિવટશ ભારતીયો, વિવટશ ગુજરાતીઓ આ દેશમાંસૌથી સારુંકાઠુંકાઢી શક્યા હોય તો તેમાં વશક્ષણ, વેપાર-ઉદ્યોગ, દાન-સખાવત સવહતની અન્ય િવૃવિઓનો વસંહફાળો તો છે જ. પરંતુ હું માનું છું કે આપણી િગવતમાં આપણા સનાતન ધમુની દેનસમાન શાંવતવિયતા, સવહષ્ણુતા અનેસહયોગ વૃવિનુંપણ મુઠ્ઠીઉંચેરું િદાન છે. આપણે ક્યારેય એવો દાવો નથી કયોુ કે આપણા સનાતન ધમુનાં કલ્ચર, સંસ્કાર જ સવુશ્રેષ્ઠ છે. આપણે તો લેણ-દેણમાં, આદાન-િદાનમાં માનીએ જ છીએને?! આપણા પવરવારજનો, અન્ય સમાજની પશ્ચાદભૂ ધરાવતા જીવનસાથી કે વમત્રો હોવા છતાં, આપણી પરંપરાનો અમર વારસો સાચા અથુમાંસાચવી શક્યા છે, જાળવી શક્યા છેતેના મૂળમાંઆ જ વાત છે. આપણાં ધાવમુક સ્થાનો, સાંિદાવયક ઘટકો કે જાગ્રત સંસ્થાઓ આ અંગે અવશ્ય સારુંઅનુદાન આપી શકેતેમ છે. અનેકેટલીય રીતેઆપી પણ રહી હોવાનો મારો ખુદનો અનુભવ છે. અંતે તો, આપવું અને લેવંુ તેનું પણ સમીકરણ તો છેજ ને? આપણા સંતાનો કેસ્નેહીજનોને(સંસ્કારવારસાની) આપ-લેકરવા માટે ઉિેજન આપવા, તેવા સંજોગોનું વનમાુણ કરવા, િોત્સાવહત કરવાની જવાબદારી સહુકોઇએ પોતપોતાની રીતેવનભાવવી જ રહી. આ નૂતન પવરવાર િથામાં લગારેય નીચાજોવાપણું નથી. તે સહજ છે. અને જે સહજ છે, તેને સ્વીકારવું તે પણ આપણી ફરજ તો ખરીને? મારા મતે, આપણે જેટલો િેમ, સ્વીકૃવત, સદભાવ આપશું તેટલું જ શુભ પવરણામ િાપ્ત થશે. અરે, આ તો આપણા ઋવષ-મુવનઓની શીખ છે, વડવાઓની દેન છે. મોટેરાઓએ મોટા મન રાખવા જ રહ્યા. નાના મનનો માનવી કંઇ લાંબી દોડમાંજીતી ન શકે. આપણી પરંપરા, આપણો સંસ્કારવારસો, આપણા ધાવમુક અનેકૌટુંવબક મૂલ્યો, સાચે જ ખૂબ ઉપયોગી છે, જરૂરી છે. પહેલાં પણ હતાં, અને ભવવષ્યમાં પણ હશે. તેને જાળવવાની અને નવી પેઢીમાં તેનું વસંચન-સંવધુન કરવાની જવાબદારી આખરેતો આપણી જ કહેવાય ને? મારા મતે, વિટન એક રામરાજ્ય જેવુંછે. અત્રેશ્રમનુંગૌરવ છે. રુલ ઓફ લો એ આ દેશની સાચી પરખ છે. વિવટશ સમાજ અને આપણાં સમાજમાં સમાનપણે જોવા મળતાં સંવેદના, કરુણા, સવહષ્ણુતા જેવા સદગુણો મનને ભરપૂર શાતા આપેછે. સદભાવનાની ખેતી કાયમી ઉપજ આપશેજ. ભારતીય સંસ્કૃવતનો આ અમર સંદેશો આ શુભ વદવસોમાં આપણે વધુ શ્રદ્ધાપૂવુક સાંભળીએ, તેના રણકારનો િવતસાદ આપીએ. થોડુંક દઇએ, થોડુંક પામીએ... વાહ... વાહ...ભયો.... ભયો.... આજના આ મંગળ પવવેસવુવાચકો, પવરવારોને, પવરવચતોનેવદવાળી અને નૂતન વષુની શુભકામનાઓ. નૂતન વષુ અને જીવનનો હવે પછીનો તબક્કો િગવતદાયક, સુખમય અને શાંવતમય બની રહે તેવી પરમકૃપાળુ પરમાત્માને મારી સહૃદય િાથુના. પરમકૃપાળુ પરમાત્માની અસીમ કૃપા, સહુ વડીલો, વાચકો, ગ્રાહકો, શુભવચંતકો, સમથુકો અને સહુ કોઇના ઉષ્માભયાુ સાથ-સહકારથી આપણી આ િકાશન પેઢી િગવતના પંથેમક્કમ પગલેઆગળ વધી રહી છે. મારા સહુ સાથીઓ, પછી તેલંડન હોય, લેસ્ટર હોય કેઅમદાવાદ - સાચેજ આપણને ગૌરવ થાય તેવા કમુઠ અનેરૂડાંમળ્યાંછે.

A

s the world celebrates the festival of lights let us all embrace the true spirit of Diwali: the victory of light over darkness, and hope over despair.

At this special time of year I know millions of people around the world and here in the UK will come together to mark this joyous festival with family, friends, feasts and fireworks.

When we hear so much about tragedy and misery in our world it is at times like Diwali that we can reflect on all the incredibly positive and generous things that people and communities do for others.

This is why it is important as a country we celebrate our religions. I am proud that Diwali and other important festivals such as Easter, Eid, Vaisakhi and Hanukkah are freely observed and celebrated – by people of faith and none. They are reminders of the countless positive things that we have in common and show us that good will always triumph over evil.

Diwali also shines a light on Britain’s Indian community and allows us to think about the astonishing contribution they have made to our country. And this is not just about what we all see and benefit from today: the businesses they run; the jobs they create and the great public and professional services they provide. It is a contribution that goes back many years. As we commemorate a century since the outbreak of the First World War we recall a con-

flict in which hundreds of thousands of men from India travelled far from home to help the Allies defeat tyranny in the fight for the freedoms we enjoy today.

As well as looking back we can also look forward with great confidence about the future in the knowledge that British Indians will continue to excel and be at the forefront of our society, helping to take Britain from strength to strength.

I am sure that as Diwali is celebrated here in Britain many people will be thinking about their loved ones in India, underlining the people-to-people connections between our two great countries.

These deeply personal links are just one part of the great friendship between Britain and India. It is a strong and vibrant relationship that works in so many ways: from the economy to education; from science to sport. I very much look forward to continuing to build on this historic and invaluable friendship for the benefit of both our peoples.

So whether you are in the UK or India, whether you are Hindu, Sikh or Jains – to everyone celebrating the festival of lights around the world I wish you a very peaceful and happy Diwali.

I wish the UK and global Indian community a very happy Diwali. The spiritual significance of Diwali is one of hope over despair, light over darkness and good over evil: something we should all celebrate.

In the UK, as in India, Diwali is one of the most important spiritual and vibrant occasions of the Hindu and Sikh calendar, and during this most auspicious time, let us celebrate not only the values, spirit and goodwill that bind our Indian community, but also the brightness that represents our future.

The contribution of British Indians is immense. We have all enriched Britain’s way of life in such significant ways, and we should be proud to celebrate our collective achievements – achievements that the younger generations of British Indians can now aspire to.

As the Prime Minister’s UK Indian Diaspora Champion, I extend my best wishes to everyone in the Indian commu-

nity here in the UK, and worldwide, as we enter into the bright lights of the Hindu New Year. It was around this time last year that the Prime Minister asked me to become the Indian Diaspora Champion – acting as an advocate and ambassador at the heart of Government for all British Indians. I have been inspired by the talent, ingenuity, and community spirit of the UK’s Indian diaspora, and by how active they are in helping further develop the already strong UK-India relationship.

This has been an exciting year for India, and as the New Year dawns, I am full of hope for both the future of British Indians here in the UK and for relations between the UK and India in the coming year.

Celebrating 'the festival of light' in our multicultural Britain

With Britain becoming more and more multicultural, Diwali or Deepavali as a festival, has gained immense popularity. In ancient India, Diwali was probably an important harvest festival. However, there are various legends pointing to the origin of Diwali. Some believe it to be the celebration of the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu.

For Bengalis this festival is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Kali, the dark goddess of strength. In Jainism, Deepavali has an added significance to the great event of Lord Mahavira attaining the eternal bliss of nirvana. Lord Ganesha, the symbol of auspiciousness and wisdom, is also worshiped in most Hindu homes on this day.

Diwali also commemorates the return of Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshman from his fourteen years long exile after vanquishing the demon-king Ravan. In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the Capital of Rama's kingdom, illuminated the city with earthen diyas (oil lamps) and burst crackers.

In Britain, whether it's London, Leicester, Birmingham or Manchester, every city has its own style of celebrating Deepavali. Several local organisations host Diwali celebrations every year, along with many Hindu temples. Even political parties host their own Diwali receptions at popular London hotels. On 15 October, Lord Dholakia, Rt Hon Keith Vaz, MP, Priti Patel MP and Bob Blackman MP with Hindu Forum of Britain hosted a Diwali reception at the House of Commons. The Labour party organised its official Diwali party on 20th October, to be followed by the Tories on the 27th. PM David Cameron also organised a Diwali reception at 10 Downing Street on Monday 20th October. Last year the PM and his wife visited the Swaminarayan temple, where Mrs Cameron in a beautiful red Indian saree dazzled everyone.

While the popularity of this festival has soared amongst Britons, people of Brent have a different story to tell. There was a time Brent and Wembley used to celebrate Diwali like no one else did. This borough had a much loved procession along the main roads, followed by spectacular fireworks at the Barham park. This was very dear to the locals, many of who came to Britain after Idi Amin's expulsion. The Brent Diwali continued for almost two decades, till 2010, after which, for severe funding cuts, it officially stopped.

Every year the locals yarn for the reinstatement of their former glory. Hoping against hope, they pray for that particular day, when Diwali will be the same for them again. A day when they will march down the streets of Brent again, singing and dancing, celebrating the true meaning of Diwalithe festival of illumination and togetherness.

5 days of Diwali

DAY 1- Dhanteras: The first day of Diwali is called Dhanteras. Traditionally people on this occasion would wash their money on this day. In their homes, people literally wash coins in milk and water and worship Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. It can also be said that to give or distribute money to the poor and needy, is a way of ‘washing your wealth’.

DAY 2 - Kali Chaudas: People offer Nived (food) to the goddess that is local to where they are originally from.

This goddess is called their ‘Kul Devi’. Some families also offer food to their forefathers on this day.

In some places, this day is also celebrated as Choti Diwali or Narak Chaturdasi. It is believed that on this day Lord Krishna destroyed the demon Narakasur and made the world free from fear.

DAY 3 – Diwali & Lakshmi Puja: Diwali is the last day of the Hindu year and thus also the end of the Hindu financial year. Many businessmen close their account books and do rituals to open their new account books for the next financial year, in order to gain prosperity in the next financial year. This is the day when Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped to achieve the blessings of wealth and prosperity, the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

DAY 4 - New Year's Day: Everybody greets each other with good wishes and a happy new year, 'Saal Mubarak’.

The young bow down and touch the feet of their elders to gain blessings. Money or gifts of clothes are also given. At some temples 56 different foods are offered to the deities, this is known as Annakut Darshan. In some places and cultures, people also have Govardhan Puja.

DAY 5 - Bhai Beej or Bhai Dooj: It is a day dedicated to sisters. Many moons ago, in the Vedic era, Yama (Yamraj, the Lord of death) visited his sister Yamuna on this day. He gave his sister a Vardan (a boon) that whoever visits her on this day, shall be liberated from all sins.

This is also known as Bhai fota among Bengalis.

A victory we must remember

iwali. A time of happiness, when we celebrate the victory of light over dark.

Yet this year feels different. Perhaps it is because this year marks the centenary of one of humanity’s darkest periods; as we commemorate the start of the First World War. Soldiers of the Commonwealth fought side by side with unknown, alien allies. Across France, Iraq and East Africa, some 1.27 million Indians contributed to the war effort; nearly 48,000 of them killed and even more wounded.

13,000 won awards for bravery and twelve won the prestigious Victoria Cross. We must never forget their sacrifice.

It is striking that the Canadian soldier John McCrae, in perhaps the most famous of war poems ‘In Flanders Field’, used imagery so appropriate to Diwali.

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high.

It is a torch that we hoped had long been unnecessary. Every parent wants to bring their children up in a safe world; free of conflict, foes and danger. Yet a glance at any news programme this year has shown foes of our nation; enemies of democracy, freedom and tolerance.

The rise of ISIL in Syria and Iraq; Putin and his corrupt colleagues invading Ukraine and the downing of flight MH17. The people responsible are our foes. Enemies of every patriotic British person.

But Britain’s foes aren’t all overseas. The devastating and systematic child abuse in Rotherham and the indoctrination of children in Schools across Birmingham in the socalled ‘Trojan Horse’ scandal. The perpetrators represent darkness to every decent Christian, Hindu, Sikh and Muslim in this country.

Too many have lazily drawn conclusions about the religious origins of the perpetrators, denouncing Muslims en masse. This is nonsense. The vast majority of Muslims in this country uphold British values every bit as keen as Hindus –or any other group- do; lest we forget that there were an awful lot of Muslims fighting on our side in 1914 as well.

Let us be clear about who is culpable.

Those responsible for the crimes in South Yorkshire are criminals. Those cowards who knew about it and covered it up for fear of being called ‘racist’ are just as guilty.

Those leading schools astray in Birmingham are outdated, extremist bullies. And those cowards who knew what they were doing but didn’t stop them betrayed the children and parents of Birmingham.

Those young British men who’ve travelled to support ISIL aren’t ‘brave’ or ‘religious fanatics’; they are attention seekers who don’t deserve to call this country home. Prime Minister rightly said in his Party Conference speech that “those who have had all the advantages of being brought up in Britain, but who want to go and fight for ISIL … You have declared your allegiance. You are an enemy of the UK – and you should expect to be treated as such.”

And so Britain must stand united; much like we did a

century ago. We may not be in trenches scattered across the continent, but we are fighting a battle about our beliefs and values.

‘It is always darkest just before the Day dawneth’ wrote Thomas Fuller in 1650. Let us hope so. Let us pray this Diwali for more settled times; and for our light to constantly outshine the dark.

But let us also make sure we remember what this country has given us and what it represents. The rule of law; protection for minorities; the right to vote; education for our children; healthcare for our parents; tolerance and equality. Let us teach our children –the future of our country- why we are so lucky, what Britain has given us, and why we should be so proud of what this country represents.

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

Why I want to be home for Diwali

“Now come here and let's finish the pooja before you kids go out and burst crackers!� Every single Diwali, after having distributed sweets to the neighbours and friends, my brother and I used to help our parents with the lighting of Diyas and candles apart from chanting prayers loudly. Not to forget the occasional not-so-gentle tapping on the head on mis-pronouncing the Shloka syllables. It was all about lights, sweets, colours, chaos and love.

I came to London from India only three years ago, fairly recently, as a student who hoped to learn and gain knowledge. Having spent three Diwalis in this city now, the festive time is one phase during which I feel closer to home. It is heartening to see people experiencing the same festive sentiment simultaneously in two different parts of the world. Traditional clothes, loud crackers, sweets and cardgames, Diwali has elements that transcend all boundaries.

My most memorable Diwali in London was last year. I was invited to a Diwali party by one of my professors. From Bandhanwar to Rangoli,

Diyas to crackers, the festivities spilled out on the street where people were stopping by to watch the colours and the lights. We did the initial ritual, the Pooja, invoking Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi. Then after a few minutes of chanting, the guests gathered in the lawn for the fire-crackers.

There were sparkling sticks, 'rockets' and the spinning spiral. To be honest, I have always been afraid of the noises that firecrackers make, so I stuck to gorging on sweets, samosa and Chhole-bhature. Afterwards, we moved to the best part about this festival- traditional food! The dinner was followed by a session of music and dance. Another highlight of the day was the farewell gift of Diyas, little decorated ones. It was one of the best days I had in London. Festivities are not just about galore, it is much more.

So, after giving some thought to plausible solutions, I asked my parents to fly to London for Diwali this year.

And that is when it dawned on me, that at least for me, Diwali is more. It is not only about togetherness with one's family but also about ex-

each other, no matter what their religion be. Previously I participated in making diyas at school and also loved listening to Indian musical instruments being played.

pressing solidarity with those who deserve our love and concern. It is about spreading joy in the lives of those who are unfortunate and are left behind.

Deepawali can be celebrated in the true sense only when we light up the corners that are dark, not only the ones who are already lit. So this Diwali, I am going back to India to celebrate, to feel the festivity in the air and to realise the nostalgia I have been living in.

A time for happiness, goals and reflection

iwali is not just another festival for me. It is a time for happiness and enjoyment with my family. I look at Diwali as a way to be inspired, especially from one of the stories associated with it, like the Ramayana, looking at the courage Rama and Sita had when defeating Ravan and coming back after 14 years of exile. In particular the New Year following Diwali, the time where I take those inspirations and set my goals for the following year. This is the time where good triumphs over evil and light triumphs over darkness, so I and my family put out divas, to eliminate any darkness and show the right path full of light. Living in a multicultural area is an advantage for me, because I and my community all contribute in the celebrations of Diwali together.

My school is multicultural. Therefore, there are many Hindus, Sikhs and Jains, who celebrate Diwali and the whole school participates in the fun and enjoyment. As soon as we step into the class, my friends start wishing each other Happy Diwali and many hand out Indian sweets and gifts to

At home, on Diwali, Indian sweets are given out, and I look forward to meeting my cousins. I engage in many activities and celebrations, and in the evening I enjoy the spectacular firework display at the temple.

Some years, we had our own fireworks, but now we are conscious about how it damages trees or plants in the garden.

On Dhanteras, my family does a Lakshmi puja, to pray for happiness and prosperity and thank God for the previous year. I pray for giving us strength, for happiness and prosperity.

Soon after that Bhai Beej takes place, where I appreciate the fact that I have a sibling to share all my joys with.

My family explained to me the real meaning of Diwali when I was younger, and it is one to be remembered. These celebrations are times for me to realise that I am lucky to live in a multicultural society, where Diwali is appreciated and celebrated and the importance given to this festival, at home, school and in my community.

New Year, which concludes this beautiful festival, is a chance for me to reflect back on my past year and see what I must do to improve the next year.

An unforgettable celebration in Tenali

t was the year 2012 Diwali. We were in India at that time. We went to our grand parents’ place ‘Tenali’ for Diwali holidays.

We celebrated for 3 days.

On the day one, my uncle, aunty and their children also came. We had prepared an effigy of ‘Narakasura’, the demon.

We had lot of fun in making that effigy. It was made with hey grass, papers and lot of fire crackers inside.

Day two is called ‘Naraka Chaturthi’, the death day of the demon ‘Narakasura’. We all kids went to an open place and burnt the effigy of ‘Narakasura’. I was told that this is an act of burning evil and welcoming good. My parents bought many sweets.

We went to my dad’s friend’s house and gave sweets to them. My dad bought new clothes for me and for my mother.

My grandmother narrated to me the story of Diwali, that it is also celebrated to mark the event of Ram’s victory over evil king ‘Ravana’. I have learnt that thousands of years ago there lived a good and nice king called ‘Dasaradha’ in Ayodhya. He has three wives and four children. The first child was Ram and he married to Sita.

Ram went to forest along with his wife Sita and brother Laxman, as desired by his step mother Kaikeyi.

Sita was kidnapped by the evil king Ravana. Ravana took Sita to Lanka. Ram went to Lanka along with his brother Laxman and monkey army. Ram fought with Ravana. Ravana was killed by Ram in that great

battle. Ram took Sita to Ayodhya. People of Ayodhya celebrated Ram’s victory by lighting up lamps.

Day three is Diwali.

My parents woke me up very early in the morning for doing prayers. I wore new clothes. My parents, grandparents, aunty, uncle and all kids together did ‘pooja’ to goddess ‘Lakshmi’. I ate so many sweets.

I played with my friends and relatives.

In the evening , everybody started lighting up ‘diyas’, small oil lamps and candles. Houses were decorated outside with full of lamps and candles. Diwali celebrations started after the day light went off.

Multi coloured lights, sparklers, bombs and firecrackers everywhere. Flashing lights, fire rockets and flashing arrows over the black sky. I enjoyed lighting up crackers and sparklers.

It was a memorable holiday, which I enjoyed the most.

A fun Diwali with family

iwali is my favourite festival. Last year was a memorable Diwali for me because we got school holiday on the occasion of Diwali. Day before Diwali, my dad took us for shopping to buy crackers for us. I was so excited.

On Diwali, my house was fully decorated with lamps and filled with nice aroma of sweets. I love gulab jamoon. By the time my brother and I woke up, our parents were ready with fire crackers. We started our day by lighting some colourful sparkles early in the morning. I was so thrilled. I took bath and wore new clothes. I was looking very special in that Indian traditional dress.

We did prayer by chanting slokas and then my brother and I took blessings from our parents.

My brother helped my mom in cooking as she made yummy yummy gulab jamoon. We all had nice

lunch and my mom put me to sleep as we are going to have a big party in the evening till late night.

In the evening, I helped my mother in arranging the candles in an order. My mother said that if we fill our home with bright lamps, Goddess Lakshmi will visit our home.

After dinner we all played dumb shell arts. It was very interesting to play this game with adults.

We all kids played musical statue and musical chairs. We even had drawing competition to know who is the best artist. After finishing with the games, everyone asked my brother to dance and he danced for Michael Jackson’s song. It was great fun.

At the end, my parents gave colourful sweet boxes to all of our friends.

Eat healthy on Diwali

iwali is the time to share gifts and prepare festival meals with others but it doesn't mean that what you eat has to be unhealthy.

Diwali is a festival of lights and joy. It is an important Hindu festival which comes with rituals. However over a period of time sweets and various types of fried food have become a part of it. This makes it very hard to maintain any sort of healthy diet.

In some parts of India, it is customary to eat sweets and savoury / fried items. (Usually with friends and family).

Sweets are hard to resist and during Diwali, when there is plenty of colourful sweets everywhere, it becomes even harder to resist. Some of them are with chemical preservatives as well.

I will try and explain why it is important to control intake of such foods in a special subgroup.

0Indians are genetically prone to diabetes and so it is always advisable to keep the intake of sugar and starch minimal. Compared to Caucasian population, Indian origin subgroup has 6 times risk of developing diabetes. High risk in early forties. Prevelence of the disease is ranging from 3.9% to 7.1% in various studies.

l Diwali is a festival that brings a lot of gifts to people, so use the occasion to choose sensible gifts for family and friends. Try gifting fruits or low calorie sweets and snacks instead of gheeladen sweets l Eat when you are hungry. l The best time to eat sweets is either on an empty stomach or after a heavy workout. This is because when your body is low on calories, it does not convert the carbohydrates into fat, but uses it up for other functions.

Diabetes can be accompanied

by Hypertension (high blood pressure) and hypercholesterolaemia (increased lipids in the system). Therefore avoid salty and fried food/s/ghee- laden sweets. Long standing diabetes poses the risk to various vital organs like kidney /peripheral nerves and eyes.

Stay away from sweets that use chemical preservatives, because the intake of such preservatives can cause damage to our kidneys and liver. It can also cause asthma attacks and cancer.

Avoid sweets that have ‘silver’ coating. Such foils are often adulter-

l Cut down calories in regular breakfast, at work or in dinner by small portions. Appropriate work out during and after Diwali to keep yourself fit as well as reducing the risk of putting on weight.

l Serve low caloric food: Serve snacks like dhokla, masala peanuts, unsalted dry fruits, sproutchaat, fruit salad, idlis, baked chaklis etc l Avoid hoarding up on soft drinks or artificial juice l Avoid Packaged food items: , most packaged food items are dangerous for cholesterol (LDL), weight and heart. So try and cook savouries at home.And opt to bake instead of frying them to cut down on fat.

Preparing food at home:

l Prepare plain rotis and avoid ghee or fried puris. Make them with wholemeal or 'medium' flour and avoid adding oil or salt. l When you're cooking dishes such as pilau rice, try to use just a small amount of oil instead of ghee or butter, and avoid adding any salt. l Try making paneer at home with a low-fat milk and grill the cubes rather than frying them. l Instead of the familiar deep-fried snack, try brushing them with oil and baking in a hot oven until golden.

Problems unrelated to diet: Joys of fire crackers come with noise and air pollution (aggravating diseases like asthma and COPD.) Follow simple principles and enjoy family celebration!

iwali is one of those festivals which everyone loves to celebrate- the lights and the fireworks are all just classic, but do you know what it all means?

Like all Hindu festivals several things happen at Diwali, most people say it’s about lighting the place up for Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya after triumphant victory over the evil king Ravana. This was a truly happy day for all; the people had finally got their rightful King back. And to celebrate the victory of good over evil, though there was so much trouble.

Hindus aren’t the only people who celebrate Diwali, Sikhs and Jains celebrate this too, at this time the Sikh Guru Hargobind was freed from his prison, he refused to do this until all the other 52 princes unjustly imprisoned were set

where we were doing the fireworks. It was around that year that I stopped cowering in my room and came out for some real fun!

We were in our garden and it was a normal Diwali competition for brave kids when I went to light a firework, lit it and quickly ran back. I guess I ran too fast because the firework fell over and whoosh! The thing shot sideways with a bang that scared me so much that I screamed, but it was only one of those fireworks that throw dif ferent colourful sparkles in air. I ran inside and waited until it was over. I laughed a lot the Guru Hargobind, was liberated from Gwalior being one responsiFort and took 52 prisoners to freedom ble. Clumsy free; a truly noble act for old me!

So anyway as you Sikhs to forever celebrate rush round the stores lookby a truly noble Sikh guru.

iwali is very special for me and my family. We always celebrate Diwali at home, by wearing new clothes, decorating the house with oil lamps, doing puja and eating special sweets and savouries. This festival is celebrated all over the world, from Australia and the Caribbean Islands!

Diwali celebrates the return of Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshman from exile, as told in the ancient Hindu epic ‘Ramayana’. Diwali is also known as the ‘Festival of Lights’ and spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness. This is why oil lamps (deepams) are lit and decorated around the house, especially windows.

It is said that if we light our

house well, we will have good fortune because the Goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi, will see our lights and come home.

My most memorable Diwali was 3 years ago, when we had a fantastic party which everybody seemed to love! Normally on the weekend following Diwali, we have the amazing ‘Diwali Party’ with all of our closest friends and families. This is an event which everyone looks forward to every year and allows us to spend time with friends and meet-up with people we haven’t seen for a while! In the weeks leading up to the party we practice different slokas, dances and songs

which we can perform at the party. We also have children playing on musical instruments; an outstanding display of fireworks by the dads, great mouth-watering foods and loud cheerful Bollywood music.

A few of my friends and I decided to perform a dance to a Bollywood song, so we took lessons from one of our friends, who taught us one new step every week leading up to Diwali. Alongside this rocking dance, we also performed a skit of the famous story of Ganesha and the Fruit of Wisdom.

This is the story where witty Ganesha shows that being clever is more beneficial than being stronger.

Mums sang a wonderful song to everyone’s surprise, and we had a DJ in the end.

Chef Vijay was the excellent caterer on that amazing night, and provided a huge variety of mouth-watering dishes and sweets for us. It was a night that I will never forget, the fireworks still sparkling in my eyes, and hopefully this year’s Diwali, which we have already started practicing for, will be just as good!

A day we always wait for

find Diwali my most favourite and the most enjoyable, because it is a festival of bright lights and bursting crackers. I would wait for days for it. And when my wait is over and Diwali arrives, I would naturally be excited.

Last year was my most memorable Diwali.

Well before Diwali my sister and I prepared greeting cards, bought crackers, lamps, dresses and gifts.

We painted the lamps with colours that I thoroughly enjoyed.

O n the day of Diwali, we woke up early, took head bath, wore new clothes and prayed to God. We went to temple and after reaching home mom prepared delicious food and my favoutite “Paravannam”, a special sweet of South India.

Once we had lunch my sister and I eagerly waited for the evening, to help mom light and decorate the house with earthen lamps.

We did Lakshmi pooja and then came the most excited moment of bursting different crackers and lighting fireworks. I just loved it.

A festival bringing people together

n our family Diwali is one of the most important and one of my favourite festivals. In our Hindu religion, it is also famous as a festival. We celebrate it by burning crackers and lighting diyas in the house.

My mum does Goddess Lakshmi pooja in the evening and after pooja we burst crackers, which is my favourite. Besides that, my mum makes lot of Indian sweets and savoury items which are very yummy.

Last year we invited my school friends for Diwali festival. We all enjoyed watching fireworks that my dad lit in my back garden.

In India children are allowed

to burst the crackers. But my mum does not allow me to light crackers here, as she worries that I will burn myself, inspite of precautions.

Every Diwali is special for me, but the most special is always the current one! I learnt about Diwali as we crafted colourful diyas as candle holders and drew some Rangoli.

I love this festival as it brings everyone together and we get to have some family time.

he Festival of Lights, brightness and happiness spreads affection between families. The pujas held at homes are filled with divinity and enlightens our mind and soul. This is further strengthened as the sight of the fireworks shoot high above and cascade down gently making a chime, the sound allows everyone to cheer and experience the best time of the year.

Every year, the divas flicker and dance around us, sending away the dark and gloom. The lanterns

signify God's light, penetrating through the ignorance and sin of our daily lives.

Pain and anger are dispelled as the royal light shines through this mundane world. The festive mood cleans our hearts out, ridding them of darkness and bitterness.

Diwali brings us the upmost peace and prosperity. Diwali brings us the spirit of light which illuminates the world. It leads to celebration and social harmony.

The strains of joyous sounds of bells and drums float from the temples as man is invoking Goddess Lakshmi. Impenetrable darkness is pierced by innumerable rays of light for just a moment and the next moment a blaze of light descends down to earth from heaven as

Diwali is everyone's favourite.

Certainly mine, not just for one year, but every year, year after year.

My parents buy colourful clothes for me, we exchange sweets and greetings with friends and family, visit temple and offer prayers. No next day school tension, no worries about sleeping late. It is an occasion to meet friends and those who we did not see

for months before. It is an occasion to invite friends in wider community to let them taste the vibrancy of one of the most important celebrations on Indian calendar.

Diwali: Bright, joyful and binding

here was always a time in life when we eagerly looked forward to something. Arrival of a favourite relative, release of a movie starring favourite lead, or holiday to a favourite place. Among multitude of fairs and festivals on the Hindu calendar, Diwali was always that part of the year we waited for, for its vibrancy and uniqueness, immensely and primarily fascinated with the prospect of fireworks. After all, no other festival is so illuminating and has celebratory reasons linking two Yugas, i.e. arrival of Rama in Tretayug and slaying of the demon Narakasura in Dwaparyug millennia later.

Brought up in a traditional south Indian setting, we as children were woken up at 4 am, to have a quick and rigorous round of oil massage on the scalp, followed by a traditional bath. By this I mean using soap nut lather for hair and rubbing the body with a pack made of natural ingredients like Bengal gram (split chickpeas) and yellow lentil flour, tulsi leaves and turmeric, with a dash of camphor for fragrance. We would be clad in our new clothes and then led to light sparklers and friendly fireworks. I am sure some in the neighbourhood felt flabbergasted, when a cracker or two were set off noisily by zealous revellers in the locality at 5 am. After about two decades of this routine and ritualistic celebration, I got married into a family rooted in western India. Festivals naturally mean indulgence to us Indians, and Diwali is no exception. A variety of sweets and savouries is the essential and inherent part. I noted that Diwali in my new world meant more sweets and many more sweets! Bhai

All I knew until then was Raksha Bandhan, sisters tying wrist bands to brothers and brotherly figures. It was certainly amusing to see (another) special day dedicated to strengthening the brother-sister bond. Also, Dhan Teras is not such a rampant practice for Telugu people, though I must admit that the pleasure of having a day earmarked for buying gold jewellery is delectable. In Marathi community, the wives are given special gifts for Diwali, the occasion is called Padwa. It was gratifying to know there is a wives’ day too.

I moved to the UK ten years ago.

I thought I was coming to a new environment with a different social setting.

I was not entirely correct. I found more of Indian-ness in Britain than in India.

I saw people with a growing inclination to remain connected to the community. However, since ours is a mixed household, I must confess it hasn’t been smooth-sailing in initial years. Be part of Telugu Ugadi celebration or

Marathi Gudi Padwa? Mangala Gowri or Vara Lakshmi ? Shivaji Day or Vaikuntha Ekadasi? I am glad Diwali is something we could celebrate together without much deliberation, albeit with some variation. I remember the strange look on my husband’s face on our first Diwali together in Manchester when I said we would light sparklers early in the morning, when he is so attuned to the fact of fireworks in the evening. Cultural amalgamation has become so common today, that we take the best of two worlds and relish without losing the cultural flavour.

And for both of us, Anna Kut is exhilaratingly new. We have been living in London, in Wembley for 8 years.

The Anna Kut at Swami Narayan Temple is amazing, extra-ordinary and a proof of how rich and varied a vegetarian palette could be. The best part of living in London is also being able to enjoy the massive Diwali on Trafalgar Square. The mega public event is attended by 20,000 people, with the cost incurred to the tune of £70,000.

Perhaps one of its kind in Europe. The concept of celebrating the festivals on weekends regardless of the day they actually fall on, is the order of the day

I have learnt here. Due to several community and cultural organisations, our celebrations will go on long after they are actually gone.

And I am yet to receive a Padwa gift from my husband!

બિબિધ પ્રવૃત્તીઅો, મંબિર યાત્રા અનેઆઉટીંગ: કેર હોમ પાસે વ્હીલચેર યુઝસિને માફક આિે તેિો ૧૫ સીટનો મસડીડીજનો કોચ છે. દર વિસમસ િખતે તમામ િવડલોને શહેરમાં વિસમસ લાઇટીંગ બતાિ​િાના, દવરયા કકનારેપીકનીકના અનેઅસય આઉટીંગના કાયિ​િમોનું આયોજન કરિામાં આિે છે. ગત અોગસ્ટ માસમાં જ બે કોચ ભરીને િવડલોને હેસ્ટીંગ્સના દવરયા કકનારે ફરિા લઇ જિાયા હતા. કેર હોમ 'ડાયલ અ રાઇડ' સાથે પણ રજીસ્ટડટ છે એટલેકેર હોમના િવડલો તેની સેિા લઇનેજાતેપણ ફરિા જઇ શકેછે. આ ઉપરાંત િવડલોના જસમ વદનની પાટડી, ગાડટન પાટડી, મનોરંજક કાયિ​િમોનુંપણ શાદનાર આયોજન કરિામાંઆિેછેઅનેજો િવડલોના સંતાનો કે પૌત્ર-પૌત્રીઅોના જસમ વદનની ઉજિણી કેર હોમમાં કરિી હોય તો તેની પણ વ્યિસ્થા કરી આપિામાંઆિેછે.
