Naroda Patiya massacre:

Former Gujarat minister Kodnani gets 28 years jail

killed in Naroda. As many as 94 bodies were found, of which 84 were identified. Three people are still missing. Former Gujarat minister Kodnani and Bajrangi were convicted under sections 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, amongst others. Special public prosecutor had sought capital punishment for the convicts, during the hearing for quantum of punishment. Kodnani was sentenced to 28 years in jail on Friday for murder during one of the country's worst religious riots, when up to 2,500 people, most of them Muslim, Continued on page 26

Panicked students: UK government The UK immigration has finally reached an exasperating point. In efforts to reduce the number of immigrants by tens and thousands, the Coalition government is toying with many lives, including that of hundreds of Indians. While the government plans to deport foreign students at London Metropolitan University (LMU) with no valid visa or standard of English, revoking the license means foreign pupils doing an undergraduate degree or PhD may not get a chance to finish their degree or course if they are not sheltered by other universities within 60 days. But that may include paying another hefty fees, which may be impossible by many students. Some of the foreign students who have valid visas, have spent thousands of pounds to come to Britain, including selling lands and properties. They are now stranded in Britain, fearing if they step out of the country, they may not be allowed to come back in again. Continued on page 13

A special SIT court has awarded life term to BJP leader and former minister Maya Kodnani and Babu Bajrangi in the Naroda Patia massacre case. Maya Kodnani has been convicted under three sections of IPC and sentenced to 28 years in prison. The court has ordered that Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi will remain in jail for the rest of his life. Seven of the 32 convicted have been sentenced to 21 years in jail. Last week, the court had convicted 32 people, including Kodnani and Bajrangi and acquitted 29 in the biggest postGodhra killings. On February 28, 2002, 97 persons were
