Pakistan cricketers found guilty of 'spot-fixing'
Pakistan cricketers Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif were convicted on Tuesday of fixing parts of a Test match in the most serious corruption scandal to hit the sport in more than a decade In the most significant day of the 20-day trial, the jury for the spot-fixing case gave its verdict after nearly two hours of being present at the London’s Southwark Crown Court. but was shut down by owner Rupert Murdoch this year amid a scandal over phone-hacking. Prosecutors alleged Butt
and Asif conspired with British agent Mazher Majeed and Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Aamer to bowl the no-balls as part of a plot that revealed "rampant corruption" at the heart of international cricket. Butt was found guilty on two counts - by a majority on conspiracy to accept corrupt payments and by unanimous verdict on conspiracy to cheat. Asif was found guilty by unanimous verdict on conspiracy to cheat. The jury is still considering the charge of accepting corrupt payment against Asif. Continued on page 26
