In what can be seen as one of the most important progressions in the murder case of Anni Dewani, husband and murder suspect Shrien Dewani, was extradited to South Africa on Monday 7 April and was due to appear in a South African court on Tuesday 8 April, as Asian Voice went to press. The 2014 parliamentary election in India, which will see 815 million voters exercise their franchise in the world’s biggest democratic process, kicked off on Monday with polling in Assam’s five constituencies registering 72.5 per cent voting and Tripura’s lone parliamentary seat reporting a superb 85% turnout. The total electorate in the five Assam seats that polled on Monday is 6450,000. In Tripura West, the electorate totalled 1248,000. Polling was held in Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Kaliabor, Tezpur and Lakhimpur comprising 64,37,132 voters and 8,588 polling stations. The first phase in Assam will decide the fate of 51 candidates, including chief
minister Tarun Gogoi’s son Gaurav, who is contesting for the first time from Kaliabor. West Tripura will decide the fate of 13 candidates.
