If you know know any teenage girls, you know 7 Brew and Cahaba Nutrition are the rage. But which one is better? We asked a few teenage girls what they think.
May: Cahaba Nutrition, because it offers a large variety of flavors and it is very customizable.
Emma: I feel like Cahaba is more popular, low-key, cuter, and has more stuff that I like better.
Julie Ann: 7 Brew because it has more options, and is really cheap, and quick.
Caroline: 7 Brew is better because it offers a wide range of drinks and the prices are extremely fair.
Maye Morgan: I like Cahaba Nutrition better, and I think it tastes better, and it makes me happier.
Katy: I prefer Cahaba Nutrition more because it has more flavors, and is more refreshing.
Maye Morgan: I usually spend more at Cahabaaround $9.
Emma: Usually like $7, but I don’t go there that often because of how much it cost.
Julie Ann: Almost $5 each time I go.
Caroline: I normally spend 4-5 dollars when I go depending on size.
Katy: Usually I spend around $10, but if I get half caffeine it is cheaper.
May: I spend around $10 at Cahaba for one drink, but that varies depending on their Sunday discounts, as well as the amount of caffeine I ask for.
Maye Morgan: I go a lot. Maybe 3 times a week when I have a paycheck.
Emma: Sometimes, but not often.
Julie Ann: About 3 times a week.
Caroline: I go 2 to 3 times a week.
Katy: I don’t go to Cahaba too often. I go around every 2 weeks, just because it’s pretty far away from where I live.
May: I go at each at least once a week if not more.
Maye Morgan: I handle the caffeine well but sometimes when I haven’t eaten I don’t like the way it makes me feel, and 7 Brew is the same way.
Emma: It doesn’t change the way I act or anything, but I also will get it with half caffeine if I had another caffeinated drink before that.
Julie Ann: Depends on what I get. Sometimes the drink I get has very little caffeine, but I’m mostly with my friends afterwards so I can let out a lot of energy with them.
Caroline: I drink it slow. It’s the same amount of caffeine as a Red Bull.
Katy: I can handle the caffeine pretty well. I won’t be getting one of these drinks on an empty stomach, or my head will start hurting.
May: My body has gotten used to the caffeine. The average is about is 200mg (same as Alani and Celius) but sometimes I’ll ask for “half-caff.”
According to the CDC most sodium comes from restaurants and processed foods – nearly 50% of sodium intake comes from these 10 foods.

3. Sanwiches
4. Cold cuts/cured meats
5. Soups
6. Burritos & tacos
7. Savory snacks
8. Chicken

2) Select ‘Less Sodium’ Options
More and more foods are made with a lower sodium option, and most can’t taste the difference.
3) Upgrade Your Salt Ounce for ounce, table and kosher and sea salt have about the amount of sodium, but the last two take up more volume on measuring spoon.

Picking a color matters! The better your house is decorated the quicker it’s going to sell and for more money! But beyond monetary value, colors evoke their own moods: what vibe are you setting? Calming hues such as blue or green, feel relaxed. Whereas, loud vibrant tones such as red, maroon, or orange, feel energetic and passionate. Similarly, neutral colors such as white or gray feel serene. How are you feeling at home? Color has an impact.

BY KAITLYN BENTLEY
In a culture that often encourages us to push through, tone up, or burn off, it can be easy to forget that movement is meant to be a gift—not a punishment. As the owner of True40® Studio, I’ve had the honor of guiding hundreds of people into a more joyful, compassionate relationship with their bodies. Here are five ways to start listening to—and honoring—yours.
1. REFRAME MOVEMENT AS CELEBRATION, NOT CORRECTION
Your body is not a problem to be fixed. It’s a partner in your daily life, deserving of your respect. Try shifting your perspective from “I have to work out” to “I get to move today, and I can choose to do it in the way that feels best in my body.”
2. PAUSE TO FEEL WHAT’S HAPPENING
In the middle of your preferred exercise, take a breath. Close your eyes if it’s safe. Can you feel your heartbeat? Your breath? That slight shake in your legs? Tuning into those sensations is a powerful act of presence. It brings you out of autopilot and into gratitude.
3.
Some days you’ll feel strong. Other days, tired or tight. This doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong—it means you’re human. Hormonal shifts, stress, sleep, and seasons of life all impact how our bodies respond (and look, honestly), and that’s natural. Learning to work with your body, rather than fight it, is one of the greatest gifts of mindful movement and peaceful existence.
4.
Body awareness is not always instant. Like any relationship, it takes time, patience, and repetition to understand your body’s cues. Start small: notice when you feel energized vs. depleted. Ask what your body needs—then practice actually honoring that answer.
5.
The environment matters. Find spaces that affirm you, that feel welcoming and inclusive, and that prioritize how you feel over how you look. At True40, we strive to offer that kind of environment every day—a place where your body is respected, your effort is celebrated, and your presence is enough.
Movement can be one of the most sacred forms of selfrespect. You don’t have to wait until you reach a goal to love your body—you can start today, just by listening.
Two years ago this past June I started the Mounjaro shots, and I don’t regret it. For the first year-and-a-half I took it once I week. For the last 6 months, I’ve weaned myself off, by only taking it every 3 weeks.
Over these past 2 years I have observed a lot about injections, weight loss and eating in general. I have talked and watched people who are on their own weight loss journey; I have wondered why others don’t join the journey; I have listened to podcasts about the injections, and I have my own thoughts:
• I have no regrets, and I’m thankful that I got out of my own way and reached out to a doctor who could get me started. I am 37lbs down and maintaining (goal was 40lbs).
• If the shot was free or very inexpensive, I would probably keep with it forever for maintenance.
• There might be a few people who are taking it too far – let’s lose the weight and move on (Ozempic face is a real thing).
• You can get flabby if you don’t exercise and do weights.
• I hear a lot “oh, I bet they have been doing the shots ” Well, if you are noticing a big weight loss, you are probably right. Good for them for working on their health.
• Eat healthy, but eat what you want; enjoy the carbs – weight loss is all about caloric intake (as my dad always said).
• The shots curb your desire to drink, thus you can become a lightweight when going out with friends, so watch it.
• By the end, I was taking the 12.5mg dose (15mg is the highest you can go).
• When you have reached your goal, you aren’t supposed to stop cold-turkey, but step down the dosages every 3-4months.
I’ve heard drug companies want to create “the shot” in an oral form – less expensive, as those factories are already in place and much easier. When this happens, I’ll be happy to add that to my morning vitamin routine (for maintenance, of course).

Dr. Raggio’s Modern Approach to Looking Like Yourself Again
The new era of facial rejuvenation is here— one that moves beyond the overly pulled, overfilled, and visibly altered results of the past. Leading that shift in the Southeast is Dr. Blake Raggio, double board-certified Facial Plastic Surgeon and founder of Raggio MD in Birmingham. His modern approach to facelifting and facial rejuvenation focuses not on transformation, but on restoration utilizing refined techniques to achieve subtle, undetectable results.
“For most patients, it’s more than just looking younger,” Dr. Raggio says. “They want to look like themselves again —rested, balanced, more vibrant.”
That quiet, natural desire is at the core of the PreservaLift™ Dr. Raggio’s signature facelift and necklift designed specifically for today’s discerning patient who values facial harmony, longevity, and a refreshed appearance that still feels deeply personal.
What Makes Modern Facial Rejuvenation and the PreservaLift™ Different?
At its core, the PreservaLift™ is an advanced form of the deepplane facelift, a technique that lifts the deeper layers of the face, not just the skin. Dr. Raggio refines it further by using a lateral, less traumatic entry point—a preservation-first approach that protects blood supply and soft tissue. This comprehensive treatment combines an advanced preservation extended deep-plane facelift with a structural necklift and precision fat grafting and nanofat to restore youthful contours while preserving each patient’s unique facial identity.
“Our goal isn’t to pull or stretch,” he explains. “It’s to reposition the facial foundation in a way that restores, not reshapes.”
This translates into a natural-looking lift, inconspicuous scarring, and longer-lasting results. The outcome is what Dr. Raggio calls the “undetectable facelift.”
Face and Neck—Treated Together, As They Age Together
A key differentiator of Dr. Raggio’s PreservaLift™ is that it treats both the face and the neck—from cheekbone to clavicle.
“The neck is often the giveaway,” says Dr. Raggio. “If we only lift the face, we miss the full story. My approach combines a deep structural necklift to ensure harmony across the lower face.”
This includes work on underlying muscles, fat pads, and even ptotic (drooping) glands—elements many basic necklifts leave untouched.
Facial aging isn’t just about sagging—it’s about volume loss. The hollowed look around the cheeks or under eyes comes from losing fat, muscle, and bony structure over time.
Dr. Raggio addresses this with autologous fat grafting, using a patient’s own purified, stem cell–rich fat. It’s placed in strategic areas like the tear troughs, cheeks, and nasolabial folds to restore softness and contour.
“We’re not adding puffiness,” he notes.“We’re replacing what’s been lost—naturally and subtly.”
In many cases, a finer stem-cell-rich “nanofat” component also improves skin quality and glow from within.
All PreservaLift™ procedures are performed at RaggioMD’s privately owned and AAAASF-accredited in-office surgical suite, under deep IV sedation and local anesthesia, not general anesthesia.
“Avoiding general anesthesia reduces risk, speeds recovery, and improves comfort,” says Dr. Raggio. “There’s no breathing tube, less intraoperative bleeding, less post-operative nausea, and most people are up and around sooner than they expect.”
Patients also benefit from Dr. Raggio’s advanced wound healing protocols:
• Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) to accelerate healing
• Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
• Personalized aftercare and support
• Complementary Laser therapy to surgical incisions
Regarding recovery, most patients are socially presentable in 3–4 weeks. Dr. Raggio adds, “In my opinion, three to four weeks of downtime is a fair trade for the several years of rejuvenation that come with it.”
Though patients travel from across the Southeast, Dr. Raggio is clear about his local mission:
“Our goal is to bring these advanced techniques to Birmingham—to serve our own community with the same level of expertise you’d find in New York or Beverly Hills,” he says.
As one of the few facial plastic surgeons in the region focused exclusively on cosmetic face and neck surgery, Dr. Raggio blends technical skill with aesthetic precision, offering a highly individualized experience.
“ “
Our goal isn’t to pull or stretch. It’s to reposition the facial foundation in a way that restores, not reshapes.
Modern-day plastic surgery should not be about changing how you look—it’s about bringing back what time has softened. It’s surgical, yes, but discreet. Artistic, but grounded in anatomy. And always customized.
“We’re here to do thoughtful, modern work for people who value subtlety, longevity, and natural outcomes,” says Dr. Raggio. “It’s not about looking different. It’s about looking like you, just well-rested again.”
The PreservaLift™ at Raggio MD: A preservation extended release deep-plane facelift and structural necklift approach that “preserves” the skin (green) by entering the deep plane at a point (yellow) more lateral to the traditional deep-plane incision route (blue). Key features include carefully placed incisions (red), “extended” deep-plane dissection below the jawline (yellow), a release of key facial ligaments (black X), targeted deep structural neck work (red circle), and a vertical vector of lift (purple arrow) for natural, long-lasting rejuvenation. Autologous fat grafting and nanofat are also key components of this technique, though not pictured here. Before photo pictured here.
Q&A with Auburn’s Presley Miles
What did your in-season and off-season workout routine look like?
In-season and off-season were both incredibly challenging. Off-season looked like a lot of stadiums (running up and down Jordan-Hare stadium stairs over and over again). One practice was held at 5 am so there was ample time for us to recover before another practice. The off season consisted of much more volume / mileage and heavier weights. The goal was to get a solid strength base in preparation for season. In-season was filled with workouts that were more focused on speed and race preparation. I would run paces that I would run in a race to get used to the speed I would race at. We still lifted three days a week in-season but the lifts were not quite as intense. Off-season lifts were some of the hardest workouts I’ve ever had in my life.
Did you have a nutritionist at Auburn to guide you in your diet?
Yes. They walked us through our blood tests and bone density scans to determine what vitamins we were lacking, and how it affected our performance. I struggled with not drinking enough electrolytes to make up for the amount I sweat. I was given specific snacks and drinks to take to help with this. We also experimented with when the best time to eat lunch was so ensure my energy lasted throughout all of practice. They consistently made sure we had snacks and were eating enough for the amount we were training.
Were you able to get any NIL deals, or profit from being a college athlete?
I was able to work with Milo’s Hamburgers, Mountain High Outfitters, and Awake Chocolate during my time at Auburn. The NIL program through Auburn also allowed me to make money monthly.
You started your track career at Duke and then transferred to Auburn, why?
The coach that I got recruited by at Duke was fired two weeks before I stepped foot on campus. This left me with an entirely new coaching staff that focused more on sprints than my strong suit, distance. Duke did not have athlete priority registration so scheduling classes around practice times was a nightmare. I could not take basic classes required for my major. I wanted to be closer to home in the SEC atmosphere. There’s nothing like competing for the SEC. Arguably, the hardest conference in the NCAA.
How has being a collegiate athlete prepared you for your career and life?
Being a Division I student-athlete has shaped me in ways that go far beyond discipline and coachability. It’s taught me the value of sacrifice—of consistently choosing growth, focus, and long-term goals over short-term enjoyment. It’s taught me to have a relentless work ethic. Competing in D1 (really any division) athletics is like holding a full-time job—6 a.m. workouts, travel, recovery, team meetings—all while maintaining top academic standing. Being coached, I’m used to receiving feedback, both positive and negative. In sales, the ability to take feedback and adapt quickly is crucial for hitting quota and improving over time. I’ve developed strong cognitive and emotional intelligence. In my time at Auburn, I achieved the highest level of academic excellence. Achieving Summa Cum Laude status indicates analytical thinking, learning agility, and problem-solving—skills essential for understanding buyer needs and navigating complex sales processes. Add in the emotional discipline strengthened in highstakes competition, and you’ve got someone who can handle rejection, stay positive, and stay focused. I developed quite the competitive nature, and sales is a performance-driven career. I thrive in environments with clear targets, leaderboards, and performance metrics. I’ve learned to be a team player with leadership skills. I’ve learned that success is more than self and sharing best practices lifts the team to victory.
What are your future plans, now that college is over?
I am now working as a Territory Account Manager in the commercial sector for Defy Security. Defy is a value-added reseller that solely focuses on cybersecurity. I am in charge of 7 states in the Southeast. This role challenges me every day to be bold and persistent in my goals. I would love to help with any of y’alls security needs.

Hi, I’m Doctor Jodilyn Jelsema, and I’m a full-time injector at Smart Skin MedSpa I have a diverse background in OB/Gyn, primary care, and now aesthetics, and I’ve been practicing medical aesthetics exclusively for the past five years.
In addition to injectables, I also do bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for both men and women I love working with patients to help them achieve their aesthetic and wellness goals.
I’ve personally struggled with melasma my entire adult life, so my favorite treatments are anything that helps reduce hyperpigmentation NouvaDerm, SkinPen, and a good DiamondGlow are my go to services. My favorite skincare products are anything that brightens the complexion, especially Alastin’s A-Luminate and Hydrinity’s Vivid Brightening Serum.
My goal is to help every patient look like a refreshed, enhanced version of themselves I love combining treatments to get even better results. DermaPRP with NouvaDerm, Scarlet RF micro-needling with NouvaDerm, and liquid BBL with EmSculpt Neo are some of my favorites. My goal is to help each patient reach their individual goals to look and feel their best.
Whether you’re just starting your aesthetics journey or looking for a fresh approach, I’d love to meet you and help you feel confident in your own skin.
Welcome to the inaugural edition of Stirring the Aesthetic Pot. I’m Nancy Higginbotham, COO at Rousso Adams Facial Plastic Surgery This is my insider’s take on the aesthetic industry-part observation, part experimentation, and entirely honest. These are the treatments I’ve tested, the questions I get asked every day, and the moments that even Dr. Rousso and Dr. Adams have something to say about. All of it has their stamp of approval-or their side-eye. Let’s get into it. Because sometimes the anti-trend is the only trend that makes sense.
Let’s clear something up: filler isn’t the problem. Overfilling is. We’ve long been told that filler dissolves in 9 to 12 months. But recent MRIs tell a different story. In many cases, filler can linger in the face for 5 to 10 years after injection. That means what’s under the surface may be adding up in ways we didn’t expect.
I’m three and a half years post-lip filler and still loving the result because I didn’t stack sessions or chase trends. When you keep topping off filler before the old product breaks down, it migrates into the cheeks, under the eyes, and above the lips. That’s how people end up looking “off,” even if no one can quite say why.
The real culprit? Too many injectors who won’t say no. The best providers don’t just add. They assess. They pause. They plan. Because good aesthetic work should whisper, not SHOUT.
“Sometimes, it’s not about adding more filler. It’s about knowing when to stop. Overfilling can actually make someone look older, not younger. There’s an art to recognizing when the right solution isn’t more volume, but a different approach entirely-like a facelift or skin tightening procedures. True facial rejuvenation comes from understanding proportion, movement, and natural anatomynot just a syringe.” -Dr. Austin Adams, Facial Plastic Surgeon at Rousso Adams Facial Plastic Surgery
Before booking more filler, ask these four questions:
1. Do I need more filler, or should we dissolve what’s there?
P.S.- Dissolving filler isn’t as easy as it sounds. It’s not a one-and-done magic eraser-it can take multiple sessions, comes with its own risks, and sometimes that filler clings on like glitter after a bachelorette party.
2. How do you evaluate for migration or buildup?
3. Will this product layer well with my existing filler?
4. What’s the long-term plan to keep my results natural?
Full disclosure: I love Skims. I wear the underwear. I’m loyal to the bodysuits. But this collagen face wrap? It’s a stretch. Literally and figuratively.
Kim K’s latest launch promises firming, lifting, and smoothing in a full-face, compression-style wrap. It’s made from collagen-infused yarn- which sounds impressive until you remember it’s still fabric, not skincare. Realistically, your skin’s not absorbing much of anything through what is essentially a stretchy sock for your face.
The funniest post I’ve seen? Sir Anthony Hopkins wearing it and channeling exactly the Hannibal character you’re picturing right now.
Let’s not confuse it with a traditional face mask-this is marketed as a face wrap. But let’s call this what it is: shapewear for your face. And personally, the only face shapewear I’m wearing is the bandage after my facelift.
Verdict: Great for the grid. Silly for the science. One can dream that it only costs $48 to have the contouring of Kim. There’s a waitlist for it though… so what do I know?
Yes, you read that correctly. Salmon sperm microneedling is a real thing. And before you make a face, hear me out. Technically known as PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide), this compound derived from salmon DNA is packed with regenerative benefits. When paired with microneedling, it helps calm inflammation, support collagen production, and leaves your skin with a glow so luminous it feels like cheating.
And trust me-I’ve had over 20 microneedling sessions with everything from PRP to peptides. This one gives the best glow I’ve ever had. If you’re chasing that glass skin finish, this is it.
Other fun facts you didn’t ask for but are getting anyway:
• In countries like South Korea and Italy, salmon DNA is injected into the skin like Botox for anti-aging and texture refining.
• It’s not FDA-cleared for injection in the U.S., so we stick to topical use during microneedling to help it absorb.
• Did you know this is Kim K approved? So we do agree on a few things.
The weirdest part isn’t what it is. It’s how good the results are. It’s a little science, a little fish, and a lot of glow. >>>> Pro tip: Don’t overthink it. Just trust the post-treatment mirror.
We need to talk about that drawer. You know the one-overflowing with half-used serums, TikTok musthaves, expired eye creams, and that one product you bought at 2 a.m. because someone said it would completely change your skin.
Here’s the truth: the internet is loud. Everyone’s suddenly a skincare expert. And most of them wouldn’t know how to treat real skin if it showed up without a filter.
If you’re confused, you’re not alone. That’s why one of the smartest things you can do is book time with a licensed esthetician-and bring the whole drawer with you. Seriously. Dump it on the counter. Let them help you sort through what’s worth keeping, what’s expired, what never worked in the first place, and what your skin actually needs.
Getting on a personalized, medical-grade skincare routine isn’t about buying a dozen new things. It’s about streamlining, simplifying, and using science-backed products that work with your skin-not just with your algorithm.
Join the anti-trend revolution. Stop hoarding hype. Start listening to professionals who live and breathe skincare, not likes.
Bayonet opened this past spring and is the brain child of the owners of their next door neighbor- Helen. If we’re honest, we were a little cynical coming into our first visit to Bayonet because we’re not big fans of Helen, as everything seems to taste like it’s cooked in a Big Green Egg. We also viewed Bayonet as being yet another uber-expensive restaurant in the Birmingham landscape that’s more style than substance. Another place that takes pride in staying one-step ahead of it’s customers in sophistication. We were pleasantly surprised.
It’s a small space, which we liked. It was warm and cozy but still felt cool and comfortable coming in from the sweltering heat. The lighting was perfect, and it has a killer marble bar.
We started with a glass of 2019 Domaine Goisot Chardonnay $16, which had a taste we weren’t expecting. Not bad, but lacking the crispness of a typical chardonnay, it was incredibly light. We switched to a 2023 Easton Gamy Noir $17, which was served at the perfect temperature, and the French Vouvray Domaine Pichot $12, which is always a great seafood wine.
Great. We were greeted by two enthusiastic and friendly hostesses. We arrived just before 7pm on a Wednesday, and there were tables available. But we sat at the bar. Our server at the bar was attentive and welcoming, but a bit uncertain about our inquisitiveness on the chardonnay, which was no big deal at all. He did feel bad about his bok choy recommendation, so he topped off our glasses of wine for free.
Here’s a tip if you’re not familiar with parking downtown. If you park in a lot, it’s not cheap and they will tow you in a New York minute if you don’t pay. Always look for a spot on the street, and don’t bother paying the meter. If you’re not lucky enough to find a spot on the street, they share a valet with their neighbor, and it’s the easiest option.
They had 34 types of oysters from the raw bar. Three for $9.30, six for $18.60, twelve for $37.20. (Makes you wish for the good-ole-days when you could get a dozen Gulf oysters for $20.) We asked for the biggest, sweetest and saltiest oysters, and the server recommended the Aunt Dotty’s from Massachusetts and Norumbegas from Maine. Both were medium sized but absolutely delicious and superb quality. Served with a vinaigrette and hot sauce both in droppers, which we’d never seen before. From there we had the Crab & Tomato Salad with corn remoulade $18. It was fantastic with the right balance of tomato, crab and sauce. Next we had the Wahoo Chop $28, aptly named. It almost had a pork chop taste, which is a compliment. It was great, but the cucumber garnish stole the show. As sides, we went with the crowd pleaser- Hand Cut Fries with Garlic Aioli $10. It was fine. And the server recommended the Bok Choy, which we didn’t like. It was too smokey and too saucy. The bok choy seemed lost, and would have been better served with more of the stems removed.
What We Didn’t Order, But Wanted To
> The Caviar Service $200 with Champagne $75.
A rare luxury in Birmingham that’s great to see on a menu.
> The Martini Cart $15-$20. A custom martini made tableside.
There’s no shortage of high-end expensive restaurants in Birmingham. This is one of them. But we loved the bar. Coupling some oysters and sharable plates with drinks is the way to go.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
You’re not imagining it—losing weight after 40 is harder. Nothing is more discouraging than thinking about food all day, trying not to eat, and the number on the scale refuses to budge. Or worse, creep up.
That exact frustration has led hundreds of women to Ann Cade
A Fitness Nutrition Specialist with a biology and psychology background, Ann has spent over 11 years helping women lose weight and feel like themselves again. Through her signature program, Empowered Nutrition, she gives busy women a personalized, science-backed, lasting strategy that fits into their lives.
Q: Okay, —why is it so much harder to lose weight after 40?
A: Even if you’re doing the exact same thing you’ve always done, weight gain can sneak up fast in your 40s. And no one prepares you for these physiological changes.
We start losing muscle mass around age 30, which slows metabolism and drains energy. Next, estrogen drops, which throws off how the body handles blood sugar. This makes it easier to store fat, especially around your midsection.
Add higher cortisol, poor sleep, inflammation, and stress. Suddenly “eat less, move more” advice works against you.
Q: Are you saying “all the right things,” might not actually work anymore?
A: Exactly. I’ve worked with many women who eat “clean,” cut carbs, and work out more, but the scale wouldn’t budge.
Around 40, your body starts responding differently to food, exercise, and stress. Decreased estrogen affects fat storage and the gut microbiome, leading to more bloating, and bigger blood sugar spikes after meals.
We also lose muscle faster with age, which is why regular strength training is non-negotiable. Intense exercise without enough fuel can backfire. This combination can raise cortisol, resulting in more belly fat, stronger cravings, poor sleep, and burnout.
But the solution isn’t simply to do more.
Q: With so much wellness advice out there, how do I know which one to follow?
A: We are bombarded by “wellness” information in every online space. Adding more exercise, supplements, rules, restrictions, and even protein doesn’t necessarily add value. It only adds guilt. I can promise more isn’t better, different is better.
Q: What does the program experience look like?
A: Empowered Nutrition is a 4-month coaching program built for busy women who are tired of feeling stuck in a body that no longer feels like their own.
Inside the program, you’ll get short, powerful video lessons that teach you exactly how to fuel your body—starting with mindset and ending with lifelong strategy.
You’re supported every step of the way with personalized nutrition coaching, strength training videos, weekly small-group Zoom calls, a recipe library, menu analysis, and accountability.
Q: Do you only work with ladies in the Birmingham area?
A: No, Empowered Nutrition is totally online and has served ladies in 3 countries and 16 states. But the RMR Test is only available to locals.
My program cuts through the diet noise and delivers solutions that work and last. In fact, weight loss is guaranteed in writing as part of the Empowered Nutrition program.
Q: You guarantee weight loss? How do you accomplish that for each woman?
A: My approach is science-backed, rooted in psychology, and customized for each client’s lifestyle, preferences, and goals.
I teach each client what healthy choices look like for her. Then, with our strategies and systems, we integrate these choices into her life and create healthy habits. We keep the process simple and build on it with consistency calendars, accountability, and individual support until the new habits become the default!
Average weight loss in the program is 14-17 pounds. However, the most rewarding part is watching my clients grow in confidence, enjoy getting dressed, jump in pictures with friends and family, and experience more energy while confidently knowing how to fuel their own bodies to maximize health.
Q: What is the RMR?
A: My favorite toy - the RMR stands for resting metabolic rate, and I measure a client’s exact RMR through a simple 7–10 minute breath test. It’s accurate, noninvasive, and one of the most precise tools available to assess an individual’s metabolism.
We use the data to map out exactly how many calories you need to eat to lose fat, build muscle, or maintain your results—based on science, not assumptions.
Q: What’s your response to the woman that’s tried everything?
A: Diets fail in the long term. The experience is often a white knuckle approach until the weight comes off. Then something as ordinary as a dinner party, can bring back all the old, unhealthy habits. And the weight is regained.
Most people were never taught how to eat in a way that supports their body and fits into a busy life in a sustainable and even joyful way. This is especially true of women hitting a major change mid-life.
Q: How’s your approach different?
A: My program isn’t a set of rules—it’s a personalized plan that fits your real life. We look at everything: nutrition, movement, goals, preferences, and schedule. It’s grounded in science, but also rooted in psychology and behavior change. I don’t just teach women what to eat—I help them build simple systems that make healthy choices automatic, even during a chaotic week.
We aim for consistency, not perfection. My clients eat real food, go on vacation, have wine nights, and still see results—because their plan works with their life. That’s the goal: to make health effortless so they can show up fully, feeling confident and joyful.

At Children’s of Alabama, kids are the center of our world and it is our mission to provide the very best care available to every child. It’s why we are here.
We’re entering a new era in health and wellness—one where prevention is prioritized, energy is optimized, and longevity is no longer just a hope, but a strategy. At the center of this movement is Prime IV Hydration & Wellness, a rapidly growing IV therapy brand that’s rewriting the rules of modern self-care.
With spa-like lounges, medical-grade infusions, and a focus on cellular health, Prime IV is where science meets rejuvenation. And our mission is bold: to not only help people feel better—but to live longer healthier lives.
Prime IV offers intravenous (IV) therapy, an approach that delivers fluids, vitamins, and nutrients directly into the bloodstream. It’s not new—hospitals have used it for decades— but what Prime IV has done is take this once-clinical procedure and elevate it into a personalized wellness experience.
Why IV? Unlike oral supplements, which can lose potency in the digestive process, IV therapy ensures maximum absorption and immediate results. Whether it’s boosting immunity, recovering from intense workouts, promoting collagen, enhance clarity or rehydrating after travel, the benefits are often felt within minutes. We also provide IM Injections – Quick shots for B12, Vitamin D, Lipo-Mino, CoQ10, and more.
Each treatment is administered by licensed medical professionals, with every client receiving personalized attention in a tranquil, upscale environment.
The days of waiting until you’re sick to seek care are over. Prime IV champions preventative wellness—a proactive, data-driven approach to living better, longer.
It’s not about gimmicks or trends; it’s about giving the body what it needs to thrive, and doing it before disease ever shows up.
The result? Clients report more energy, fewer sick days, faster recovery times, and sharper cognitive performance—all with the bonus of long-term health protection.
The NAD+ Advantage: Cellular Rejuvenation from the Inside Out
Among Prime IV’s most groundbreaking offerings is NAD+ therapy—a treatment making waves in the anti-aging and longevity space.
NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is a coenzyme found in every living cell. It’s essential for converting food into energy, repairing DNA, and regulating inflammation. NAD+ levels naturally decline as we age, which scientists now link to fatigue, cognitive decline, and even age-related diseases.
Prime IV offers high-dose NAD+ infusions designed to restore these levels, helping clients experience: Enhanced mental clarity and focus, Increased cellular energy, Improved mood and sleep quality, and Slowed signs of aging at a molecular level.
For those seeking ongoing support between infusions, Prime IV also offers Niagen®—a patented, highly bioavailable form of Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) that naturally boosts NAD+ production. Taken as a daily supplement or incorporated into a customized IV blend, Niagen helps the body maintain cellular function, even under stress or aging

These powerful little guys have been used for centuries in traditional medicine, and now they’re popping up in wellness routines everywhere, touting mental clarity, immune support, gut health, and stress relief.
Mushrooms are having a major moment right now—everywhere you look, brands are marketing their power-packed potential. There’s mushroom coffee, mushroom tea, mushroom cocoa, mushroom smoothies, mushroom powders, mushroom skin care… and yes, even mushroom jerky (not for me).
So, why the sudden interest in all things mushrooms?
Because they’re nutritional powerhouses. Packed with adaptogens, antioxidants, and immune-building compounds. They’re magical little organisms that support the nervous system, gut health, energy, and focus. People are turning to them not just for the occasional brain boost, but as a daily staple—me included.
I was skeptical at first. But after taking mushrooms for over a year, they’ve changed my life for the better and now they’re a permanent part of my daily routine. I’ll never go without them again. As a busy mom of two boys, a yoga teacher, and the owner of two businesses (a marketing firm and a yoga app Zentric Yoga), I don’t have time for Complicated. Mushrooms appealed to me in the first place because they are touted as being effective, convenient, and— most importantly—backed by centuries of healing tradition.
I’m not talking about the mushrooms you throw on a pizza (though tasty), nor am I talking about psychedelic mushrooms (a conversation for another day). I’m talking about functional mushrooms. These are powerful, medicinal fungi that support mental clarity, immune health, gut health, stress relief, and weight loss.
But here’s the catch—not all mushroom products are created equal. I’ve tried a lot of different mushroom products over the past year, and while some were easy to integrate into my routine, others…well, let’s just say I won’t be going back.
My first mushroom experience was with MUD/WTR, a mushroom coffee alternative. A fellow yoga teacher gifted me a can. It was marketed as a better-for-you coffee alternative: adaptogenic, jitter-free, focus-enhancing. I made it once, took a sip, and… nope. Let’s just say it lived up to its name. I tried another brand called Ryze, which promised to reduce belly fat and bloating. It tasted better, but it was still just a blend of mushroom powder and instant coffee—not something I could commit to daily. Next, I tried cacao-based mushroom blends from Four Sigmatic They tasted better, but they felt too fussy—nothing I could easily integrate into my busy mornings.
Finally, I found my sweet spot: mushroom supplements and gummies. No prep required, easy to take on the go, and I still got all the benefits. Mushrooms are now and forever my daily ritual, and I’ll never go without them. I’m obsessed— and it’s changed my health for the better.
Here’s a breakdown of the most popular mushrooms and what they’re known for:
• Lion’s Mane: Supports memory, focus, and cognitive performance.
• Reishi: An adaptogen for reducing stress and improving sleep.
• Cordyceps: Boosts stamina and energy—great for athletes.
• Turkey Tail: A powerhouse for gut health and immune support.
• Chaga: Antioxidant-rich and great for reducing inflammation.
• Shiitake: Excellent for heart health and immune support.
• Maitake: Known for supporting blood sugar regulation.
Personally, I rely on Lion’s Mane for focus, Reishi for rest, Cordyceps for energy, Chaga for gut health, and Turkey Tail for immunity.
Before you start buying mushrooms off Amazon, let’s talk about what matters: mycelium vs. fruiting bodies.
• Mycelium: This is the underground part of the mushroom, the root system, usually grown on grains. But here’s the thing— products made from mycelium could be diluted, with the grains it was grown on.
• Fruiting Bodies: These are the actual mushrooms—the caps and stems that grow above ground. This is where the active compounds like beta-glucans (immune support), terpenoids (anti-inflammatory), and ergothioneine (an antioxidant linked to healthy aging) are concentrated.
Lately, psilocybin—aka the active compound in magic mushrooms—has been making waves in the wellness world. Microdosing, where you take just a tiny amount of psilocybin to boost mood, creativity, and focus, is becoming more and more popular. Psilocybin is even being studied in clinical settings to treat depression, PTSD, and anxiety, with some of the most exciting research happening right here at UAB. Personally, I’ve dabbled in microdosing. The insights and mental clarity that come from those experiences are mind-blowing. I’ll save that discussion for another time.
Here are my top picks based on quality, transparency, and effectiveness:
1. Nutrition Auri: My top choice. Their Super Mushroom Daily Gummies (with Lion’s Mane, Chaga, Maitake, Shiitake, Reishi, and more) are my daily go-to. $55 TryAuri.com
2. Stonehenge Health: Their Dynamic Mushrooms capsules (featuring Lion’s Mane, Chaga, Maitake, Shiitake, and Reishi) are excellent for an all-in-one option. $50 Amazon
3. EPRS Nutra: They offer individual mushroom types in capsule form, so you can pick and choose which mushrooms to take based on your needs. $22-$40 Amazon
4. Sacred 7: Their mushroom extract powder mixes well into smoothies, coffee, or tea, and I love that it includes a broad variety of mushrooms like Lion’s Mane, Chaga, and Reishi. $62 Amazon
Functional mushrooms are simple, low-effort and they work. They support your body’s systems, help you stay sharp, and make a noticeable difference in your energy, mental clarity, and immune health. Mushrooms are the real deal. No gimmicks, no fuss—just pure, powerful ingredients from Mother Nature. Have you tried functional mushrooms yet? Have question? Redefining Skin Health, Confidence, and the Meaning of Beauty
Village Dermatology is ushering in a new era of skin health and beauty with the opening of its newly renovated, state-of-the-art facility in Office Park. This move, years in the making, is more than just a change of address, it’s a reflection of the practice’s dedication to advanced care, patient comfort, and a philosophy that celebrates the beauty in every individual.
The new main office, located at 14 Office Park Circle, officially opened to patients in August and features clean mid-century modern architecture, large windows, and plenty of natural light. A fountain at the entrance adds a welcoming touch, highlighting Village Dermatology’s attention to creating a comfortable, inviting space. Inside, every detail was designed with the patient experience in mind, including a beautiful and comfortable patient lounge offering coffee and work spaces for patients and family members.
“Rooted in history and an icon in the community, Office Park offers unparalleled convenience to our patients. Being a part of reviving one of the original buildings has been so rewarding,” says Village Dermatology founder Dr. Jenny Sobera. “Staying true to the original mid-century modern design while providing for a more up-to-date experience was challenging, but I think we nailed it.” Walking distance from the previous Mountain Brook Village location, patients will love the convenient parking and easy access to both Highway 280 and Cahaba Road.
The newly renovated facility, spanning over 14,000 square feet, was designed to meet the growing needs of patients while allowing the practice to expand its services. The medical suite now includes 16 patient rooms, and the new surgical suite has six treatment rooms with a private lounge for surgical patients and family members.
The Aesthetic & Laser Center, which has become a destination for patients seeking advanced aesthetic treatments, now features seven dedicated treatment and laser rooms. New to the practice are a cosmetic consultation room designed for in-depth treatment planning, a dedicated photography room and two numbing lounges with privacy curtains and comfortable seating. Two in-house laboratories and a dedicated blood draw station make it possible to provide streamlined care without ever having to leave the building. The team continues to grow as well, with four board-certified dermatologists, including a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, supported by physician assistants, a nurse practitioner, licensed aestheticians, and a body sculpting specialist.
“Everything we do here is about caring for the whole patient,” Dr. Jenny Sobera says. “Whether that means removing a skin cancer or helping someone feel like their best self with aesthetic treatments, our team is proud to offer advanced medical care, surgery, and aesthetics all under one roof, delivered by people who truly love what they do.”
Village Dermatology’s new home also embodies the heart of its philosophy: that beauty is deeply personal and unique to each individual. This belief is woven throughout its approach to care, focusing on confidence, health, and the feeling of comfort in your own skin rather than perfection or trends. “Beauty is more than skin deep,” Dr. Jenny Sobera says. “It’s about how you feel when you’re cared for, when your concerns are taken seriously, and when you walk out the door feeling like the best version of yourself, not someone else’s idea of beauty.”
This philosophy carries through every part of the practice, including the newly expanded LABL Studio, which has taken on an exciting new life in the Office Park location. Formerly known as the Skin for Life Boutique, LABL Studio sits at the main entrance, welcoming patients with a bright, modern design and a luxury retail and education experience. The name— short for “Live a Beautiful Life”— captures Village Dermatology’s mission to help patients feel confident and empowered in their daily skincare routines.
LABL Studio offers a carefully curated selection of medical-grade skincare products chosen by Village Dermatology’s providers, as well as new product lines and exclusive releases. The new LABL branded skincare line offers exclusive, beautifully packaged products that provide impressive clinical results. Experienced skincare experts provide one-on-one consultations to help patients customize skincare regimens, and the studio also hosts educational events and pop-up shopping experiences throughout the year. “Patients trust us for their medical and aesthetic care, and LABL Studio allows us to continue that trust at home,” Dr. Jenny Sobera says. “We are proud to offer skincare backed by science, and our team makes sure you know exactly how to use it to get the best results.”
Village Dermatology’s new Office Park location captures what the practice has always stood for: compassionate care, medical expertise, and a forward-thinking approach to skin health and beauty. The team continues to provide the same personalized, patient-first care that has earned Village Dermatology its reputation as one of Alabama’s most trusted names in dermatology. As Dr. Jenny Sobera puts it, “This new home is for our patients. It represents everything we stand for: advanced care, a personal touch, and the belief that every person deserves to feel beautiful in their own way.”

We ask Birmingham’s Marcelle LeBlanc what it’s like to make it in today’s Hollywood.
You grew up onstage in musicals like Annie and Peter Pan—now you’re chasing screen roles in Hollywood. Is Broadway still the dream, or has your spotlight shifted?
I definitely have aspirations of both Film and Television plus Broadway. In fact, I just had the honor of originating a role in a new musical movie that should be out in 2026. In many ways it was like a return to my musical theatre roots and it really fed my soul. It reminded me how much love I have for the stage. At the moment I am focused on film and television but you will definitely see me back on the stage some day.
You’ve worn a lot of hats- from studying Accounting to launching S.T.A.R.S in partnership with the Alabama Arts Alliance. What inspired you to pursue these different paths, and do you feel it gives you a unique perspective in an industry full of smoke and mirrors?
I feel like the only thing that limits a person is themself. I have many different aspirations in many different areas of life, and I never want to limit myself into thinking that I can’t achieve all of them. I run my own arts scholarship program, have a marketing degree from Auburn, am pursuing a career as a film/television actress, and continue to grow every day. God is very faithful, and has opened more doors than I could have imagined.
As a girl from Birmingham walking into casting rooms in L.A., do you ever feel underestimated? Or do you feel like your Southern roots give you something others don’t have?
I feel like growing up in the south has helped to keep me grounded. I grew up in a regular family with chores and having to work from the time I could drive. The hard work and for lack of a better term “normal” life, has taught me to work hard to get the things I want. I also think sometimes there’s a misconception that just because you have a southern sweetness to you, you may not be tough enough for this industry. I completely disagree. I think in the south we are raised socializing and knowing how to work a room. I think being southern gave me a more optimistic outlook but also the tough skin that can come from being a girl in the south. We know not everyone likes us and we are ok with that and we still know how to smile and talk to them anyway. I think Southern charm is an underrated super power.
Hollywood is full of power dynamics—especially for young women early in their careers. How do you navigate these situations when something just feels off?
My faith and relationship with God is the biggest part of who I am. I have prayed over my career from day one. I firmly believe that God will open the doors He wants me to walk through and shut the ones that need to be shut. I have to say, I know people talk about the seedy side of Hollywood and I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, but I just haven’t experienced that side of things. I have been blessed to be surrounded by some of the most amazing directors, producers and actors during my 10 years in the industry. People have poured into me and I hope that as my career grows I can be the same influence to other young actors.
Is there a mental timer for you? Like, ‘If I don’t land something by X, I’m out’? I’m here until I hear “that’s a wrap” on my own terms. The reality is, some very talented people never make it. It’s not always about talent. I was told very early on in my career that you have a better chance of winning the lottery twice in your lifetime than having a stable successful career as an actor. This job isn’t for the weak. There is a misconception that it’s all glam and celebrity. But the reality is we are artists who love the craft. We would rather be broke and doing what we love. It’s like oxygen to an artist. When I’m not on set, I’m working on vocal training, dance or in an acting class. And then preparing for auditions and self tapes. I’ve also started writing. I just finished my first short story and it was such a proud moment for me. It’s a full time job that you only get paid to do every once in a while. I’m fortunate that I have worked each year and then have side jobs that help to keep me here during the slow times. Your learn to live simply. My friends and I are usually at someone’s house because going out is a luxury! Between Ubers and the cost of one drink, one night can cost you your weeks grocery bill! It’s not a cheap place to live.
I think Southern charm is an underrated super power.
When you do have time off and you’re back in Birmingham, what’s your ideal ‘day about town’ here?
Waking up in the morning and going for a walk with my mom in my neighborhood is my favorite way to start the day back home. The other is stopping by to hug on two people who helped get me where I am today; Amy Murphy at Amy Murphy Studio and Meg Deusner at Acting Out! Academy. I owe so much to both of these amazing women and while I still work with both of them via zoom, nothing beats a moment in person!
What’s next on your radar—on screen, off screen, or maybe something completely unexpected?
I have a movie coming out in 2026 that I just finished in May. I play Charli in this movie musical set in high school. The title is Saturday! That experience and the people I met changed my life forever. I was in 9-1-1 Lonestar earlier this year and I’m also in several episodes of Tyler Perry’s House of Payne that’s currently airing and another film coming out later this year.
Marcelle LeBlanc is a 22 year old actress who grew up in Birmingham. She has appeared in projects like Fear Street, The Waltons, Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, Cobra Kai, Stranger Things and more. Her upcoming projects include Saturday the Movie Musical, House of Payne, and Colleen Hoover’s Regretting You
The 16th Annual Otey’s Fest Shinding took place on Saturday, July 26th at Otey’s Tavern in Crestline Village. Attendees enjoyed food, spirits, live music, family fun, and an all-around good time. To see the rest of the pictures click the code.

“I just don’t think at this age I’m meant to live an uncomfortable life.” – Victoria Ratliff
There is a somewhat (in)famous quote which has been attributed to Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, and various others. “Everything in moderation, including moderation.” Did “The Father of American Literature” or “Ireland’s Greatest Wit” actually say that? Eh, who knows? Who cares? What matters is that we accept and embrace the wisdom.
We are never going to advocate breaking the budget at Piggly Wiggly. Honestly, we are more inclined to suggest something less expensive than the budget you have in mind. But, as Mark or Oscar or someone asserted, everyone once in a while you should, “go big.” We guess “go big” is the modern parlance. Anyways, please keep reading for a few wines which eschew moderation. These are great examples of wines which, while not cheap, are actually tremendous values and are worth it. Just like you are worth it.
Oh buddy. You don’t like Chardonnay you say? Please let us present the exception to the rule. Some folks who loathe Chardonnay also happen to love White Burgundies. We get it. But here is the crazy thing… the vast, overwhelming majority of White Burgundies are… Chardonnay! This incredible Chardonnay, from New Zealand of all places, is one of the most amazing Chardonnay wines you can find. Our retail of $69.99 is still actually $15 off the regular $84.99 price. It earned a 96 Point rating (if that kinda thing matters to you) from one of the most prestigious wine review sources, Vinous. Treat yourself!
Food Pairing: Try this incredible Chardonnay with some of our in house Chicken Scallopini.
What is this? Oh, just the best vineyard site in Oregon from the best, oldest, and most important producer in Oregon. Some of you may have noticed that we are fans of Eyrie at Piggly Wiggly. There is a reason. The wines from Eyrie are fantastic and some of the best examples of Pinot Noir in the world, much less the US. This gal, she’s Daphne after all, goes for $109.99 -down from a $124.99 regular retail. The 97 Point rating from The Wine Advocate is pretty cool as well. Treat yourself!
Food Pairing: Ask our fishmonger, Ryan, for some salmon. He is sourcing incredible fish from Scotland, The Faroe Islands, New Zealand and more. Pinot Noir loves salmon.
Back to New Zealand? Yes. Yes, we are. And we might be just as surprised as you are. We tasted this recently and just kinda looked at each other. We were incredulous. This Bordeaux-style red blend from The Land of the Long White Cloud was on par, or better, with the French inspirations that were twice the price. Is it pricey at $119.99? Sure, but value is the key. And this is a great value. This Southern Hemisphere stunner scored a 97+ from The Wine Advocate. Treat yourself!
Food Pairing: Looking for Certified Angus Beef, American Wagyu, or Australian Wagyu? We keep that on hand. Wanna go crazier? Just ask Josh, our butcher, and he will hook you up. Great red wine with great red meat, just as Mother Nature intended.
Long story short, treat yourself. You deserve a great wine to go with a great meal every once in a while. Treat yourself!
