Who Do You Think Should Be On The Cover?
Lem Motlow was the maturnal nephew of Jack Daniel. He inherited Jack Daniels’ from his uncle in 1907.
PLANNING AN EVENT?
We asked Danny Brewer at Feel the Beat for his advice.
What’s something to add to an event to make it stand out?
A personal touch. If there is an emotional story behind the event, or a reason to celebrate let the guest know that they are appreciated love and thank them for their time for attendance.
Is there a perfect time of day/week for a great event?
Look at the calendar and pay attention to sporting events. Also, most family events are on the weekends and some vendors offer discounts on Sundays if Saturdays are already packed.
What’s a good activity for corporate events where the guests don’t all know each other?
In 1910 Tennessee passed a statewide prohibition law, effectively barring the distillation of Jack Daniel’s within the state. Because of prohibition in Tennessee, the company shifted its distilling operations to St Louis and Birmingham. This location closed in the wake of Jefferson County’s local prohibition, which went into effect on January 1, 1908. National prohibition forced the company out of business entirely in 1918. Motlow eventually re-opened his uncle’s old Lynchburg distillery, where the company has been able to produce, but not sell, its liquor ever since.
This painted sign can still be seen on the corner of 2nd Avenue North and 24th Street, near their former distribution warehouse. At that time, the company also had East Lake Corn Whisky, Jefferson Co. Rye Whisky as well as the famed Tennessee Lincoln County Whisky.
We highly encourage doing an interactive element during the cocktail hour to encourage getting out of the cliques. One way we do that is offering everybody a playing card when they arrive, then they are asked to walk around the room and find others in the room that have the same card as them. Then we may call out all of a particular card, and get them to come upfront and play a game where they can win a prize. It’s much easier than just saying “who wants to play a game.”
How can you make an event memorable?
I live by the phrase “Music is the heartbeat of life”. Sometimes a good song will immediately change the environment of the room from a cocktail hour to a party.

5 PLACES TO VISIT BEFORE THE YEAR ENDS
by Christen Bond at Ray & Poynor
Fall is in the air. With so many beautiful places to visit nearby, let’s talk about getting out of the house. These ideas range from a short drive to longer ones or a quick flight, whichever makes you happiest.
1) Apple picking in Alabama. What’s better than sharing fresh, seasonal, local produce and supporting the communities that grow them? These day trip destinations offer various apple varieties and sweet treats to bring home for your neighbors:
- Scott’s Orchard in Hazel Green
- Crow Mountain Orchards in Fackler
- Steele Orchard in Cullman
- Mountain View Orchards in Jemison
- Isom’s Orchard in Athens
- Homestead Farm in Talladega
2) Hit the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky. It’s a manageable drive filled with good finds. My favorites: Woodford Reserve, Buffalo Trace (book your tour up to 60+/- days in advance), Four Roses Distillery, and Castle & Key *their gin is AMAZING. Stay a night in Lexington and another in Louisville for the full experience.
3) It’s a beautiful drive to Asheville, NC in the Fall. You’ll enjoy their sophisticated food scene and craft brews. Did you know Asheville is home to more breweries per capita than any other city? Reserve Bouchon for fabulous French cuisine, and don’t overlook the incredible Indian cuisine options: Chai Pani and Mela. During the holiday season, treat yourself to Christmas at Biltmore and the OMNI Grove Park Inn National Gingerbread House Competition.
4) Get to Florence, Alabama in two hours For music lovers like me, you can tour The W.C. Handy Museum and Library, Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, and FAME Studios. Stop by The Rosenbaum House; it’s the only Frank Lloyd Wright structure in the state. Don’t miss a photo op at the iconic Old Railroad Bridge, the oldest in Alabama, where the site boasts plenty of stories for history buffs. Visit Ivy Green, the home of Helen Keller. If you’re staying overnight the GunRunner Hotel and The STRICKLIN Hotel come highly recommended.
5) And last, but certainly not least, visit New Orleans when the weather is prime. Go antiquing on Magazine Street. Visit The National WW II Museum, The Butterfly Garden at the Audubon Insectarium, and Jackson Square. Score tickets to a Saints game. Try the turtle soup. Order Bananas Foster at Brennan’s where the dish was created. Everyone you know has their cuisine recs. Some of my personal favorites are: Blue Crab Beignets and anything with turtle at La Petite Grocery, sushi at Luvi, spaghetti and dessert at Bywater American Bistro, and a Flaming Dr. Pepper at the Gold Mine Saloon.
Cheers to 2023!
TOP 5 HABITS FOR BUILDING LEAN MUSCLE MASS
BY: ELLIE HILLER
“I want to look toned, but I don’t want to get bulky.” This is probably the most common request I get from clients when assessing their health related goals. Guess what? Those people you have in your head when you think of the beautiful “toned” look place a HIGH priority on building muscle. You won’t ever look toned without lots of lean muscle tissue. On top of aesthetics, muscle is the key to longevity and independence as we age. After the age of 30 years old, something called sarcopenia takes place. This is progressive muscle loss from baseline as we age. On average people will lose up to 3%-8% of their existing lean muscle tissue per decade after the age of 30. There is good news though! This can be mitigated and even reversed with a few practical strategies.
1. Start out with consuming 0.7 grams of protein per lb. of ideal body weight per day. It’s crucial you’re eating enough protein to support muscle growth and repair. Everyone is different in terms of their specific protein needs; however, I recommend that individuals ensure they are at a minimum, eating 70% of their ideal body weight in grams of protein per day.
2. Resistance Train 3x per week w/ Progressive Overload. Progressive overload refers to an increase in time, weight, or intensity every consecutive week of training. What is resistance training? In simple terms, this style of training stresses the muscles using load or force. The most important aspect of strength training is pushing yourself each week to lift one more rep, or add a few more pounds.
3. Sleep 7- 8 hours per night. do not get quality sleep are at a much higher risk of muscle loss compared to those who do get lots of quality sleep! Many of the important hormones needed to repair and build muscle are secreted during sleep, so the more quality sleep you get the better!
4. Take Creatine Monohydrate. is one of the safest, most researched supplements on the market. It has been shown to have a significant impact on building lean muscle mass. Yes, we do get it through our diet if you are eating animal protein. The problem is that most people don’t eat enough of these items each day to fuel muscle development.
5. Stop Overdoing Cardio! If you want the “toned” look then stop focusing on excessive cardio in an attempt to burn fat. Your best shot at fat loss actually comes from strength training. With strength training, you actually burn more calories for longer...even AFTER the workout ends!

ADVENTURES IN DIETING
INJECTABLE WEIGHT LOSS UPDATE
If you saw the last issue, or read it on our website, we’re following a mid-40s female’s journey of taking one of the weight loss injectables. She has been taking Mounjaro for just over 4 months. At last report (two months ago), she had lost 14 lbs. Now she’s lost 21 lbs. Last week (from when this was written) the doctor stepped her up from 2.5 mgs to 5 mgs after she took a week off. The stair stepped approach is normal. Her side effects have been minimal, but has had some IBS symptoms recently after taking over a week off and then stepping up her prescription. Her symptoms were prevalent for about 3 days, but she feels better now. During her week-and-half off, she did not gain any weight back. “I’ve had stomach issues with the new 5mg. Issues started about 2 days after taking the injection – can’t help but wonder if the down time between shots might have made it worse or if I was going to have issues with 5mg anyway.”
As with all medical issues, About Town warns you to always speak to your doctor. We’re not encouraging or discouraging anyone from taking any type of medications. After reading our first installment, a local doctor told us, “These injectable drugs can be a good option for some patients, but can be dangerous if not properly prescribed and monitored. They should be prescribed by a medical physician who specializes in the proper medicine and who will thoroughly evaluate the patient for the reasons behind difficulty in achieving weight loss along with medical lab work-up and other testing. The medical community’s general opinion is that physicians must be careful prescribing these drugs for patients without medical need of help in weight loss.” Another weight loss expert told us that these prescriptions are about to revolutionize the entire weight loss industry. Traditional weight loss (diet) programs will take a huge hit. She said there’s a new weight loss drug coming down the pike that has tested even more successfully than the brands currently available. And some current injectables should be available in pill form sometime soon.
About Town will have another update in the next few months.

BEST BARS BE T BARS 2023
^ Mayawell
First impressions of walking in the front door is that of a cozy little corner bar, but we think it has the best outdoor seating in town. Located near Lakeview, the bar has a rooftop view that faces downtown. Mayawell is a playful twist on the phonetic spelling of the ancient Aztec goddess of the agave plant, Mayahuel. Specializing in agave spirts (Tequila and Mezcal) Owner Neill Crook was inspired by a trip to Mexico City to bring the drinks and the ambiance home to Bham with him.
> Otey’s
It’s 3 things that make Otey’s great. The generous pours in styrofoam cups, the convenience and the food. It’s also one of the best sports bars in town. Located in Crestline Village and recently opened in Homewood, the crowd is more local-neighborhood-based than other Birmingham proper spots. Added a few years ago, the roll up garage doors have merged their indoor-outdoor atmosphere.
This year we wanted to start a new traditional. About Town is naming some of our favorite places. This Top-5 list will appear annually. We base our suggestions on several things- atmosphere, service, crowd, and of course drink quality. If you have any suggestions, please D.M. us on Instagram.
< MOM’s Basement
Somewhat off the beaten path, but conveniently located between Crestwood and Avondale, Mom’s is about as old-school as it gets. The faux wood paneling and hideous couches lend to the super casual atmosphere. With vintage pinball machines, dart boards and a pool table, it’s vibe is its name. A beer order may feel apropos, but their frozen drink options should not be missed. Be sure to check out all the Mom pics, and feel free to bring your own.
< Juniper
< Queen’s Park
Owners Larry and Laura bring some serious street cred and history to mixology. Their concoctions come in cool cups with killer decor. Good luck not waiting to get in around the holidays. There’s usually a line down 24th Street North between 1st and 2nd Ave North. This place become the place for Holiday cocktails. Try a Large Format drink if you’re with like-minded friends. It’s a giant cocktail made for about four people.
Tequila has had it’s moment. Mezcal is having a moment. Bourbon, vodka, etc. have had plenty of exposure. But it seems gin has become the forgotten spirit. Not at Juniper. This elegant and cozy gin bar takes you to a different era. Inspired by the ornate gin places of the Victorian era, it’s eclectic and botanical vibe entrance leads to a lush courtyard. And the Clairmont Ave location helps bring the neighborhood’s personality to the place.

BEST dishES BE DISHES
^ Hot & Hot Tomato Salad
Hot & Hot Fish Club
Like the Best Bars on the previous spread, we’re starting an annual list of our top five best dishes in Birmingham. This is About Town’s list. Do you know of a dish you’d like to see?
us on the gram, and let us know.
Part of its appeal is that it’s seasonal, and you can’t just get it whenever. Hot & Hot follows the tomato season from Florida into the Carolinas to keep the dish on the menu from May-September. It’s certainly had its fair share of hype being on numerous regional favs lists. But it’s worth the hype. Chef Chris Hastings was inspired by his mother’s succotash but lightened it up after several rounds of experimentation.
^
Linguine alle
Vongole
Le Fresca
Usually, when prepared American style, linguine with clam sauce can be a overtly rich gut punch. But Le Fresca’s preparation is true to it’s source country. It’s light and simple. Fresh housemade pasta, white wine, butter, garlic and a generous portion of clams. Of all the restaurants that have recently encapsulated the downtown culinary scene, Le Fresca may be our favorite. Friendly unpretentious staff with a great atmosphere has taken North Italy to 2nd Ave North.
> Vegetable Chow Nian Fun Red Pearl
< Baklava Ice Cream Ocean
We were hesitant to include desserts on this list, because, well, they’re desserts. It’s kind of like cheating. There are so many good ones. But we gave the nod to Ocean’s Baklava Ice Cream. Gorgeously and curiously presented, it’s a ‘twist’ on a traditional Mediterranean dessert.
It’s not necessarily a light dish, but by Chinese food standards, it’s pretty light. If you’ve ever tried to make a version of this dish (rice noodles with vegetables) you’ll probably fall flat. While not intricate recipe, it’s simplicity is tough to replicate. It was tough to chose just one dish from Red Pearl. Cumin lamb, pork with black bean sauce, and beef with jalapeños are just 3 dishes that could have easily made the list. But it’s the Vegetable Chow Mei Fun that stands out.
< Ceviche
Dos Hermanos Taco Truck
You may not be adventurous enough to try raw fish from a taco truck, but this is a must try. It makes a fantastic light, but hardy lunch that’s super fast. It’s always fresh with generous slices of avocado and Dos Hermanos’s homemade salsas and marinated jalapeños and carrots are a perfect complement.

Spice up your outdoor space with furniture and grills from Hollywood Outdoor Living
Hollywood Outdoor Living recently decorated the outdoor spaces in Birmingham Home & Garden’s 2023 Inspiration Home. If you had a chance to visit the space this summer, you likely experienced over 15 different designers’ work. Michelle Mote is Hollywood Outdoor Living’s design consultant, and she decorated all of the outdoor spaces at this year’s inspiration home.
Pictured above: Lloyd Flanders wicker seating set and Three Birds casual dining set from Hollywood Outdoor Living
An open-air porch is such a welcomed extension of any living room! Porches with comfortable living and dining furniture can double your entertaining space without supersizing indoor rooms, and a fireplace warms up the space in the chillier winter months.
Modern wicker is a natural for Southern porches. This set is from Lloyd Flanders, which has a low profile and sleek shape. A few traditional lamps were added to bring warmth to the space. Mote chose neutral undertones for the performance fabrics that are sure to last a lifetime.
An uncovered outdoor patio, adjacent to a covered porch, adds another fun and functional space for dining and entertainment. With a ProFire gas grill, entertaining console by Lane Venture, a casual dining set by Three Birds, a few adirondack chairs by Breezesta, and a cornhole game, compliments of American Promo— you’ve got yourself a party!

The Lasers Are Coming
It’s laser season. Dr. Holly Gunn at Gunn Dermatology discusses three of the best laser treatments for the fall and winter months.
Cooler weather and less sun exposure means now is the time of year to get your skin as radiant as possible. In short, laser treatments are beneficial because the laser beam destroys the outer layer of skin (epidermis). At the same time, the laser heats the underlying skin (dermis), which stimulates collagen production over time, resulting in better skin tone and texture. These treatments are most advisable in the winter months because after your treatment, you’ll need to avoid too much sun exposure.
ICONIC NON-ABLATIVE RESURFACING
1
Non-Ablative resurfacing is for patients concerned about wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, irregular skin texture, fine lines, melasma, or deep wrinkles, but does not want the downtime associated with traditional ablative resurfacing. The treatment is safe for all skin types.
Benefits
* Improvement of wrinkles, acne scars, scars, and pigment
* No peeling and minimal flaking
* Safe for all skin types including the darkest skin tones
How It Works
The Icon uses a special deep light energy to treat below the skin’s surface targeting numerous signs of aging. The carefully controlled heat stimulates your skin’s healing response deep within, ultimately producing skin that is smoother, firmer and more radiant over time
ICONIC ABLATIVE RESURFACING
2
This resurfacing is used to treat scars, wrinkles and fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and other signs of sun damage, aging or trauma. The treatment removes old skin at a precise depth to remove imperfections and drastically improve wrinkles. Patients typically have one week of downtime which is how it’s earned the nickname the “Freddy Kruegar laser.” Patients can expect the skin can look five to ten years younger.
Benefits
* Safe for most skin types.
* The downtime is relative to your skin concerns.
* Addresses fine lines, skin crepiness, acne scars, & brown spots
How It Works
The Icon Fractional Resurfacing at Gunn Dermatology is a fully customizable treatment that is created especially for your skin. Their laser splits into micro-beams creating a fractionated pattern leading to pigment and wrinkle reduction. This fractionated technique promotes faster healing and improves collagen stimulation. It has also been studied to reduce the incidence of skin cancers and precancers.
ICONIC PHOTOREJUVENATION (IPL)
Photorejuvenation reverses sun damage by reducing the brown spots and redness in the skin. This a no downtime treatment and any area of the body can be treated to even out skin tone and improve skin texture. The treatment has anti-aging, rosacea and acne benefits.
Benefits
* No downtime treatment
* Addresses brown and red pigmentation
* Even out skin tone to produce radiant skin
How It Works
The light energy reduces the brown pigment and redness in the skin. This light is converted into heat energy, which helps to fade those specific problem areas resulting in a more even, brighter complexion with less discoloration. IPL Photofacial has been performed for over 20 years, and there are many studies in the medical literature demonstrating true, anti-aging benefits. Treatments can reduce rosacea symptoms and make the skin look and feel healthier.
4 3
ELLACOR MICRO-CORING
Something new and exciting in Dr. Gunn’s arsenal is Ellacor. Ellacore is not a laser. This non-laser option focuses on skin tightening. Ellacor removes micro-portions of excess skin to achieve an improvement in the appearance of wrinkles. An Ellacor procedure typically takes about 30 minutes or less.
Benefits
* 90% of patients showed improvement in moderate to sever wrinkles
* First and only FDA-cleared procedure to non-surgically remove excess skin
* Ellacor is the first device to actually remove skin on the microscale
How It Works
The Ellacor system is able to remove skin on the microscale without the use of thermal energy. Ellacor uses hollow needles to remove micro-cores of skin, resulting in an improved appearance of wrinkles without evidence of scarring.

What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here?
Birmingham is a big small town! You should always have an open mind and say “yes” when invited to events, because you never know who you will meet. This city is a great place to start a business as there are many incredible organizations and programs, like Voltage at Innovation Depot and REV Birmingham, that you can join to help accelerate your business. The best part is that everyone is connected to each other and supportive of new local business ventures in town!
What would you like to see happen to attract young professionals to Birmingham?
I would love to see more events and organizations geared toward young professionals. I have involved myself in several groups in town, but we could always use more! Working on crossing and niche could be cool – there are medical professional groups and creative groups who could merge together and learn a lot about one another.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I have been very blessed over the past few years. Winning 6 ADDY’s this year from The American Advertising Awards both locally and regionally was a huge accomplishment for myself and my agency (AMD Creative)!
What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here? Birmingham offers so many diverse things to do, from culinary options to entertainment, sports, music, history and outdoor activities. Everyone can find something that they love. I grew up in Birmingham and have watched it evolve and develop over the years to provide experiences and opportunities of all kinds. My husband and I actually created an Instagram account called ‘datenight.doneright’ to highlight fun and creative ways to take advantage of everything the city has to offer, like our James Beard Award-winning restaurants, the Civil Rights Institute, Railroad Park, live music at great venues, such as Avondale Brewery, and so much more. I would tell them that Birmingham truly is a “magic city.”
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of the family I have created with my husband and my 7-month-old son, who bring me constant joy every day. On a professional level, I’m proud to have completed three degrees (BD, JD and MBA) and to now be a leader in a company where I have a challenging position that pushes me to grow, develop and be strategic in all I do.
What would you like to see happen to attract young professionals to Birmingham?
We need to tell the great story of Birmingham. With a booming job market, renowned healthcare industry, affordable housing costs, an abundance of natural resources, and a diverse and inclusive lifestyle, Birmingham should be at the top of any young professional’s list of places to call home. These advantages make our city ideal for young professionals to plant roots and grow. We can’t underestimate the power of storytelling when it comes to really capturing the full picture of everything Birmingham has to offer..

What accomplishment are you most proud of? I’m most proud of the work I get to do in our community! I’m lucky to have the opportunity to work with great organizations like the Junior League of Birmingham, Mitchell’s Place and the Crisis Center. I’m fortunate that I get to work for a company that’s supportive of my goals inside and outside the office.
What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here?
Birmingham has the amenities of a big city and the hospitality of a hometown you never want to leave. This is a place where there’s always an event to go to, a new face to meet and a welcoming ambience that makes you feel at home.
What would you like to see happen to attract young professionals to Birmingham?
Our community has a lot to offer young professionals, it’s just a matter of getting the word out. Right now we’re a best kept secret, but pretty soon we’ll be all the rage.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Leaving the corporate world after a 13 year career with IBM and taking over New Directions, the family violence service center in Pitt County NC. It was in jeopardy of being closed. I wasn’t 100 percent if I was really ready to take on such a challenge, but I was encouraged by the board support offered and went for it. I was able to put together a team that not only stabilized, but expanded the services and facilities and engaged and educated service providers statewide. I was able to positively effect so many lives and the secret was first going in and listening!!
What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here?
That Birmingham is a warm, inclusive city that is rich with culture, parks, sports, all the things that people like to do with an amazing farm to table food scene! I could move anywhere that I want at this point in my life and I cannot leave Birmingham because of the ease of access to all the things I love to do AND to EAT!!!
What would you like to see happen to attract young professionals to Birmingham?
One of the long lasting consequences of the segregated Birmingham is the inequality of our public school systems. Birmingham City Schools and some of our county schools have suffered decades of revenue loss because of the “white flight” that occurred once Birmingham desegregated. Today’s young professional is looking to live and work in close proximity. Many require that work, home and amenities are within walking distance. If Birmingham and the region could be brave enough to move to a county public school system, so that we didn’t have multiple schools systems and reinvested in one for all, it would allow more professionals to walk to work and walk their children to school. It would be a game changer.

What would you like to see happen to attract young professionals to Birmingham?
I would like to see the city and it’s leaders to continue to focus tax dollars and incentives towards tapping into talent producing incubators and education. While using tax incentives to relocate new businesses can provide an immediate spark to our city. Producing our own skilled labor from the top tier medical schools and business schools at UAB as well as retaining jobs from graduates from Samford and Birmingham Southern will go further at attracting outside companies to relocate to Birmingham. Combine that with the entrepreneurial spirit that the Innovation Depot provides or the national talent flocking to the Auburn Culinary Science Center. Developing and keeping young skilled professionals is the safest and smartest investment into the future of our city.

What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here?
Birmingham has a place for everyone. There are so many different areas with unique attractive qualities. It is a city that has not sold out to the highest bidder. It prioritizes it’s culture and food scene and historic architecture. Being in the construction industry, the city has done a great job of encouraging the repurposing of existing buildings instead of tearing down and building new. The historic rehabilitation tax credits has allowed Birmingham to fill vacant buildings, attract new residents and businesses while maintaining its original charm.
There is a renewed sense of spirit in the air, especially in our downtown scene. Large anchoring projects that have recently completed or starting to break ground are reshaping Birmingham. Projects like Protective Stadium, BJCC, Rotary Trail, City WALK, Southtown & Star Developments. The true impact of these large developments takes time but it will go a long way to be the solid foundation our city continues to build on.
The adaptive reuse renovation of the Armour & Co. building. This involved a painstaking process of cleaning & preserving elements of a 120 year old dilapidated building in downtown Birmingham and transforming it into 20 luxury apartments, beautiful rooftop terrace, a restaurant & a speakeasy, and two office spaces including Blackstone Construction’s new downtown headquarters.

What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here?
Be prepared to be pleasantly surprised. I find it a benefit that people underestimate Birmingham and Alabama in general. Because it makes it so much sweeter when they come visit our city and see what it has to offer. The food, the night life, the sporting events, the hospitality, the view of the foothills….all at a solid cost of living. It is really hard to beat. Partner that with the fact that the business community is based more on collaboration instead of competition, and I cannot think of a better place to be.
What would you like to see happen to attract young professionals to Birmingham?
While I think that much has been done to attract new business and job opportunities to Birmingham, I think we need to continue to lean into that even harder. I would like to see us be known for a great place to not only start your business but relocate your business to as well. We know that is the biggest driver for Young Professionals. So, let’s be the freaking best in the South.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I have to say it it hard to pick between the two that come to mind immediately. Leading a brand new business to the other side of covid was one of the biggest career challenges I ever faced. And I am proud of the fact that our team found a way through the other side, and are even opening another location after getting punched in the mouth. Glove up. Fight on. That is our mantra. Well, we had to put it into practice in a major way. And we did.
But ultimately- I am so dang proud that we have created a workout space and concept that spans all ages and walks of life—a place where everyone feels safe AND seen. I believe that life can be more than we ever imagined, and we have the honor of empowering people to push through the tough times to get a better place mentally and physically. There aren’t enough words to explain my gratitude and pride for getting to be a part of the community at Battle.

LAH SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY
What would you like to see happen to attract young professionals to Birmingham? Birmingham offers a lifestyle to young professionals that make them feel like they’re not compromising location just to enjoy the parts of life that make life fun I Birmingham’s affordability in comparison to surrounding cities (Nashville, Atlanta) is fantastic. Young professionals come to Birmingham through major employer avenues such as hospitals, banking, and new tech companies. These are just a few of the major fields that are drawing young people to Birmingham. I personally think Birmingham offers a great opportunity to young professionals that allows them to have access to fun things like restaurants, bars, sporting events, concerts and more while still working in a competitive city that doesn’t have completely outrageous rent or home prices. During my time in Birmingham, I have seen fantastic growth from our cities and communities that continue to expand, offering more and more to those who will call Birmingham ‘home’ in the future!
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here? There are so many things to enjoy about Birmingham, and for someone who has never been here I think there is no better place to start than our food scene. Birmingham is home to multiple James Beard Award winners and nominees and their restaurants are nothing short of excellent. Birmingham has a rich history that visitors can learn more about by visiting places like the Civil Rights Museum, the Southern Museum of Flight, Vulcan and many more. Birmingham offers plenty of great options for entertainment and nightlife. Music venues and breweries bring a vibrant atmosphere to people in places like Avondale and Iron City Bham. With football season in full swing, you can catch the UAB Blazers on a Saturday in Protective Stadium. As Birmingham continues to grow, we see more and more opportunities to entertain guests and show them why we live in the Magic City.
I’m most proud of the achievements I’ve made outside of my day-to-day work as a real estate agent. I think this can be summed up as where I feel the most accomplished and feel I make the most difference; that would be my return to coaching track and cross country at Homewood Middle School. As a former Homewood athlete, I take a lot of pride in helping students work hard to achieve team and individual goals. The greatest accomplishment to me would be knowing that I positively impacted these athletes and helped them develop skills and character that make them better runners and people.

What would you like to see happen to attract young professionals to Birmingham?
The Rotaract Club is an incredible opportunity for young professionals to “learn, socialize and serve” in Birmingham. I currently serve on the 2023-24 Board of Directors as the Vice President of Public Relations, and I have loved being a member of this incredible club. From professional development to networking to meeting new friends at happy hours – it has been a great opportunity to dive into Birmingham and give back to the community.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
My proudest achievement is my unique international career path and the extraordinary experiences that have helped shape my professional journey while staying true to my authentic self.
What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here?
I have lived all over the world, and I ultimately realized that it is the community and fellowship that truly makes a place a home. Birmingham is a city full of community and fellowship. Sometimes it may take longer than you want to find your circle of community, but once you find it – it’ll feel like such a special place to call home.

What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here?
Birmingham has a strong community feeling and this is what I love most about living here. Whether you’re interested in eating delicious food, enjoying sports and entertainment, giving back to your community through service, networking with likeminded people, or exploring the outdoors, the city has so much to offer, especially for young professionals and families.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Graduating with my dual degree, J.D./M.B.A., from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University.
What would you like to see happen to attract young professionals to Birmingham?
I would love to see the creation of more postgraduation job opportunities in both existing and new industries. Expansion of retail offerings along with a continued focus on culture, arts, and entertainment, and increased advertising of the unique food scene that we have cultivated would further attract young professionals to Birmingham.

What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here?
When I graduated college, Birmingham was the last place I wanted to live. I moved around a good bit and got to experience places like Arizona, Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas and Washington State. Fast forward 13 years and I can tell you Birmingham is special. From the communities, to the restaurants, the people, to ease of travel and cost of living it’s hard to beat the Magic City. Also, I don’t care if you don’t like motorcycles go to the Barber Museum, you won’t regret it.
What would you like to see happen to attract young professionals to Birmingham?
I believe young professionals are looking for experience driven culture and something that separates the city from others. They want to be able to proudly say I live in Birmingham. I believe the city and the surrounding communities have done a great job in the last 10 years of bringing these experiences to a new level. We need to do more. Maybe a hotel, spa and pool next to The Club atop Red Mountain. Maybe even a cable car that rises from UAB’s campus up to red mountain. The new amphitheater will bring more of this positive change in our landscape and offering to these professionals. I am excited for the future of the Magic City.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Throughout my personal and professional journey, my most proud source of fulfillment has consistently been from bringing people together to share and execute on a common goal. Whether this introduction came in the realm of construction, a nonprofit board, or community organization this singular accomplishment has helped spearhead and ultimately made most of our endeavors successful.
What would you like to tell someone about Birmingham who’s never been here?
Birmingham is the best city you’ve never thought about and the best part is it is only getting better. First and foremost, the city is absolutely beautiful with tree-lined streets, amazing sunsets, unparalleled green spaces and parks, gorgeous cityscapes and a variety of neighborhoods to choose from to find the perfect fit for your personality. And all this without the traffic of Atlanta. It truly has something for everyone: Sports, an inspiring art and music scene, and an off-the-charts food and beverage scene. It is literally teeming with entrepreneurial spirit. There is so much positive energy in this city propelling it into the future—don’t miss out!
What would you like to see happen to attract young professionals to Birmingham?
I am hopeful that Mayor Woodfin’s plan to address the rising crime rate meets with success as it is important not only to have the option of restaurants, breweries, and art events but also to feel and be safe attending those events. I also think continuing the trend of providing residential housing in the city limits will attract young professionals who may be able to bike or walk to work and leisure activities. Lastly, we need to continue our efforts to promote Birmingham as a place of inclusion and diversity to overcome the ever lingering stigma arising from events during the civil rights movement. Birmingham is not that place anymore; it is so much more, and we need to share that with people.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
My greatest professional accomplishment has been building and operating my business, Kirk Drennan Law. I had always imagined that I would be an owner in a law firm; however, my vision was rising through the ranks to become a partner or shareholder—not build something from the ground up. But in 2011, I struck out on my own and founded Kirk Drennan Law. I had a few loyal clients, a paralegal and a lot of used furniture and equipment. From there I have grown the business to employ four lawyers and seven staff members thriving through a pandemic and beyond. It is a constant challenge which I consider to be a good thing. But simply growing the business is not my only sense of achievement. I have built a platform where I can help people. I am able to help clients successfully navigate their legal issues in a way that sets them up to thrive moving forward; I am able to mentor less experienced lawyers and watch them mature into the excellent lawyers they are meant to be; I am able to impact the community by creating business for other locally owned businesses and through charitable endeavors. It is no secret that I “live” my business. I make no apologies for that. The returns I receive are well worth it.

GOOD TASTE GOOD TASTE
HIGH SCHOOL ALGEBRA:
By: Scott Atkinson , Wine Manager at PIGGLY WIGGLY IN CRESTLINE
Celebrate Good Times!
WE LOVE PARTIES. We love gatherings, shindigs, celebrations, soirées, galas, balls, and events of all kinds. And we love to help you plan for these august occasions. Come on down to The Pig and let us help you get ready for your throw-down!
In the esteemed words of Douglas Adams, “Don’t Panic.” One of the first things we learned in high school algebra is this; the more variables there are, the harder it is to solve the equation. We like to keep it simple, when possible.
The Red – Keep it simple. Perrin Cotes du Rhone Rouge is the “go to” red wine. It is versatile, great value, very food friendly, and it is a screwcap (more on this later.) Lots of wine for a crowd? Can’t beat it.
The White – Second verse, same as the first. The Perrin family also crafts a Cotes du Rhone Blanc. Just as above, it is versatile, great value, very food friendly, and it is a screwcap.
BEER:
Unless you feel very strongly, we advocate cans. The technology for cans has improved greatly over the years. All the local craft breweries use cans now, as it provides a superior product. And just as above, limit your choices. Keep it down to two or three choices and relax!
The Pig was recently voted as The Best Place to Buy Wine in Birmingham for the 5th year in row. Our knowledeable staff is happy to help you with any question, and make any suggestion based on your personal tastes and budget.
THE DILEMMA OF BUBBLES
AND SUGAR:
The bubbly tends to be used for three main purposes; mixing, such as mimosa, sipping and toasting, and proper celebrations.
1. Mixing: Prosecco is the most popular bubbly for mixing. The concern we often see is that folks are (rightly) concerned with the sugar content. If you are adding orange juice, cranberry juice, etc. you are likely adding something with a decent sugar content. We like to suggest a lower sugar Prosecco, like the Ostro.
2. Cava is the best option for sipping and toasting. It is also a great option for mixing, as the production method is more like true Champagne. Cava bubbles, like Champagne bubbles, are finer and tighter, as opposed to the frothier style of Prosecco. Castellar Cava is our go-to Cava for the event budget.
3. Champagne. Champagne, Champagne, Champagne. Certain situations merit the real deal. The bigger the occasion, the more necessary the Champagne. Champagne starts “reasonable” and goes to mortgage payment territory quickly. Laurent Perrier, for the money, cannot be beat.
ALTERNATIVE CLOSURES:
Box wines, screwcap wines, and other non-cork closures are ok. There may be some out-dated concerns about the reputation of screwcaps, but they are just that – out-dated. Given the choice, almost all winemakers would prefer screwcaps or (gasp!) boxed wines for wines consumed within a few years of production. So don’t be afraid to check with us on a screwcap or a (gasp!) boxed wine. The Vignes des Lumières Red has absolutely no business being as good as it is for the money. This is a great wine that just happens to come in a box.
