After the last hurrah of summer during September, there’s a distinct chill in the air and as the leaves change colour all thoughts head towards the long nights and winter festivals. Being a monthly publication means we’ve already had early Christmas notices and it’s great to see what Thetford Town Council have planned for the festive season. First though, it’s Halloween, a festival long popular in the town due to the large number of USAF personnel living locally. Cloverfield residents are bringing back their Pumpkin Trail for the third year, and there’s plenty of excitement as they busy themselves crafting fantastic displays for people to enjoy. You can find more details on page 11.

For those who popular Ghost return this Ghost Stories forward to town’s firework events organised

For those who enjoy a good ghost story, the ever popular Ghost Walks delivered by Leaping Hare return this month and Ancient House has a special Ghost Stories by Candlelight event. Looking forward to November, we also have details for the town’s firework event and the two Remembrance events organised by Thetford Royal British Legion.

Acclaimed Thomas Paine Performance Comes To Thetford

On 29th January 1737, a baby was born in a Norfolk county town who would come to change the world with his quill pen. He would inspire an merican e olution, define a rench one, and call on us to use our reason as the basis for our beliefs and morality. His name was Thomas Paine and he was born in Thetford.

This is a story of disasters when it falls would be true. It is full of moments of despair, Philadelphia Of England rance loc And through optimism that over again”.

This is a story of history made out of blood and toil, of disasters when the timing is off and triumphs when it falls into place, and of happenings that would be hard to believe, were they not actually true. It is also the story of an extraordinary life, full of moments of exhilaration and moments of despair, of being cheered in the streets of Philadelphia and beaten in the streets of Paris. Of England looking to hang him for sedition and rance loc ing him u to face the guillotine And through it all Thomas Paine maintained an optimism that we could actually “begin the world over again”.

Thomas Paine on 13th October Lane, Thetford. Ruskin will play, To Begin Thomas Paine magnificent, and wig for understanding for enlightenment live in today.

Thomas Paine is returning home to tell his story on 13th October 2023 at the Carnegie, Cage Lane, Thetford. British RADA trained actor, Ian Ruskin will perform his acclaimed one-man play, To Begin the World Over Again: the Life of Thomas Paine, with a beautiful soundtrack and a magnificent, if a ro riately dishe eled, costume and wig for Mr Paine. It will leave you with a new understanding of the revolutions and the search for enlightenment that forged the world that we live in today.

Speaking

The great grandson of one of the band members had an extended stay in hospital, following serious health problems from birth earlier this year s the youngest of fi e children, it was a worrying and stressful time for his parents. The parents faced the life threatening illness of their new baby with no time to plan, or extra funds for travel and accommodation. Support to stay close to Addenbrookes, Cambridge was provided for several months, by the charity’s Home from Home scheme. The provision of a place to stay free of charge, minutes away was invaluable and helped the family cope with the situation. The Trust also provided someone to talk to and support whilst balancing the needs of the family and their newborn. It costs the Sick Children’s Trust £40 to support a family for one night.

Autumn At Ancient House

October sees trails, talks, crafts, events and a brand-new play at Ancient House! On Thursday 5th October join Mark Pendergrast, independent scholar and author of Uncommon Grounds: The History of Coffee and How It Transformed Our World online to find out how coffee has changed our world for good and ill. For centuries, coffee has enlivened conversations, inspired revolutions, caused slavery, been an avatar for human rights, both destroyed and saved the environment and endangered species, been accused of being a poison, and hailed as a cure-all. This is one of a programme of digital talks via Zoom to be enjoyed during the winter evenings from home.

On Tuesday in time to Meet costumed from the era, industries ways, and to win a small Brecks Fen Scheme for

On Tuesday 24th October families can step back in time to Thetford during the First World War. Meet costumed characters, handle real artefacts from the era, discover how Thetford’s riverside industries helped with the war effort in surprising ways, and take on the First World War challenge to win a small prize. Ancient House is grateful to Brecks Fen Edge & Rivers Landscape Partnership Scheme for supporting the events programme.

These chilling tales, accompanied by haunting folk music, present a modern twist on the genre. The hour-long performance intertwines three short plays, written by Kelly Jones, Shamser Sinha and Nicola Werenowska, and directed by Elayce Ismail, with music and songs composed by Georgia Shackleton. HighTide has worked with hand-picked writers from the region to create an evening of tales which will unsettle and unnerve. Essex playwright Kelly Jones said, “Ghost stories are one of the most accessible forms of storytelling. I have absolutely loved playing with the genre to create something contemporary that’s sole purpose is to scare.”

Managing Personal Finances

This time of year can be expensive, with food costs rising, heating bills going up and presents to buy.

Many online which may of some of you don’t get

Many online shops offer ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ which may seem a good way to spread the cost of some of the things but how can you make sure you don’t get into debt?

Before you start spending, work out exactly what money you have coming in and going out each month. Be realistic about what you need for essentials like food and travel. Take a look at the budgeting tool on the Citizens Advice website. This can help you set a budget you can stick to. You ll also be able to find ti s on how to reduce your regular living costs, which might be helpful if you’re struggling to keep within your budget. While it can be tempting to split payments with schemes like Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL), you’ll need a plan to pay the money back. If you're using something like that repeatedly, you might be managing for now, but it could also be a sign that it's unaffordable in the long run. Keep a record of how much you owe in total. Always make sure you understand what you’re signing up for, how you’ll make the repayments and what will happen if you can’t pay on time. It’s important to check the returns process for both the retailer and credit provider. Paying through BNPL may also affect the cost of postage returns if you’ve ordered online.

The riskiest thing about it is that you’re not guaranteed to be protected if something goes wrong. For example, you can’t go to the Financial Ombudsman Service if you have a complaint. If you find yourself turning to credit cards, your overdraft, or store cards for your spending, keep track of what you owe. You should prioritise paying your rent or mortgage, plus energy bills and ouncil ax first, because not aying these has the most serious consequences.

The Citizens Advice website has information on what bills to prioritise and how to manage debts. There’s also information on the support available for paying these and other bills. If, like many during this crisis, you find you can't afford to reduce your debts after paying your priority bills and essentials, seek advice as soon as possible.

Our August speaker was Martin Lloyd who related his experiences of becoming a published author. He has a mantra - Write, Publish, Become Famous. But it took fourteen years to get his first book published. The process consists of two phases, the first is the devising of the plot and narrative. The second stage is the recording of those thoughts. His main stumbling block was negotiating the world of publishing companies and ‘grabbing’ a publisher’s attention. He ended up writing the back cover synopsis first. If that worked, he sent three paragraphs for a reader panel and the editor to sign off. Physical size had also to be considered. Publication is now imminent, but has three phases: data, press and general publication. Promoting the book can be complex and costly with the author receiving little reward as a result. Finally, Martin explained how authorship is being complicated by the intervention of AI (artificial Intelligence), which is becoming ever more sophisticated in mimicking authors’ style and ability.

Help Preserve Second World War Memories

Thetford Library is asking you to bring your stories and artefacts relating to the Second World War to a Digital Collection Day on Saturday 21st October from 11am to 3pm. The event is part of a nationwide campaign organised by Their Finest Hour, a team based at the University of Oxford and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, who are collecting and preserving the everyday stories and objects of the Second World War. Stories of World War II are fast fading from living memory, so it is vital that they, and the wartime objects that often accompany them, are preserved for future generations. At Thetford Library you will meet teams from Oxford University, the American Library, the Norfolk Museums Service and Kick the Dust project all of whom will help to preserve this archive of local memory.

Help Hedgehogs In Your Neighbourhood

According to the State of Britain’s Hedgehogs 2022 report, urban hedgehog populations appear to be stabilising and are even showing signs of recovery in some areas following decades of decline. But numbers are still low, so hedgehogs still need our help. Luckily, gardens and green spaces, and local action, are vital in ensuring a future for hedgehogs. There are plenty of simple ways to help hedgehogs, and the best place to start is to follow these top tips from Hedgehog Street, a joint campaign by The British Hedgehog Preservation Society and People’s Trust for Endangered Species:

htttps://www.hedgehogstreet.org/ help-hedgehogs/

Autumn is when hedgehogs need to build up their fat reserves ready for hibernation. This is particularly important for any late summer and autumn litters, as they need to be big enough to sur i e their first hibernation oglets s end three to four weeks in the nest with their mum, then around two to four weeks learning how to forage with her. Then they are out in the big wide world by themselves. Hedgehogs can successfully hibernate at a minimum weight of 450g but are more likely to survive hibernation at 600g and will be in better condition post hibernation, the BHPS suggest helping them gain the weight needed by supplementary feeding. This doesn’t replace the creepy crawlies they eat in the wild, but will help them bulk up, particularly during periods when their natural food is scarce.

Hedgehog Street suggests feeding until they stop taking the food and then offer a few dry biscuits that don’t go off so quickly. Hedgehogs will wake from time to time during hibernation so if biscuits are taken or there’s a spell of mild weather, you could resume feeding again and repeat the process. Offering food in several spots in the garden reduces competition and avoids potential aggressive interactions. Keep an eye out during autumn for hoglets or juveniles which look underweight or sick, who may need to be overwintered by a rehabilitator. As long as they are over 450g, look healthy and are out only at night then it is best to leave them in the wild and offer supplementary food and water. If you are concerned, call the British Hedgehog Preservation Society 01584 890801.

If a hedgehog needs to be weighed, please wear thick gloves, and be as quick and quiet as possible to minimise stress. If it is not in need of help, please release it immediately.

The closest hedgehog rescue to Thetford is Karen’s Hedgehogspital in Brandon. More information can be found on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ groups/243939009469141/ For more hedgehog top tips, visit: www.hedgehogstreet.org

Info Point Lands At Nunnery Lakes

BTO’s Nunnery Lakes Reserve is popular with local residents, whether that’s for watching and photographing nature, to get some exercise or simply soak up the peaceful ambience of the place. An exciting new addition to the reserve is an interpretive Info Point device, allowing visitors to discover more about the site’s habitats, wildlife and history, in situ!

Visitors can now explore a wealth of information about the four main habitats at the Nunnery Lakes (wet woodland, grassland, wet meadows and the lakes themselves), including photos, sound recordings and fun facts about some of the key species that live there. A timeline reveals some of the main changes that have taken place over the last four decades to make the reserve an even better lace for wildlife Info oint ro ides of ine WiFi access to digital content about the reserve, directly to a smartphone. Access is via a simple process of scanning two QR codes: one to connect to the Info Point network, the second to open the content on the phone’s web browser. These codes, along with information about Info Point and three other local ‘Heritage Hotspots’ that have one, can be found on a sign near the viewing platform, at the south end of the reserve’s network of permissive paths.

The Brecks Fen Edge & Rivers Landscape Partnership Scheme has funded the installation of four Info Point devices in the local area, along with training for staff at each site to create and add content. The overall aim is to transform the quantity and quality of interpretation content available at some key sites in our area. This will help make new audiences more aware of Brecks heritage and able to access a wider range of interpretative material at remote locations, where connectivity can be poor.

Thetford Garden & Allotment Club Gardening Notes For October 2023

The Club’s of September 14 people classes. The awarded. presented The leaves colour and visiting. The wealth of showing in members as the grasses the time for of the Blackthorn but this can freezer for steeped in you can just October is garden or be pretty much clement old re laced with

The Club’s Annual Open Show at the beginning of September saw a good amount of entries with 14 people making a total of 176 entries across the classes. The Annual Allotment prizes were also awarded. Mayor of Thetford, Cllr Stuart Wright, presented the prizes.

The leaves on the trees have started changing colour and it can be a great time for garden visiting. The gardens at Bressingham have a wealth of colour now and there is still plenty showing in the borders. It is free entry for RHS members as a Partner garden. It is a delight to see the grasses moving in the autumn sunlight. Now is the time for foraging in the hedgerows for the fruit of the Blackthorn – sloes – better when frosted but this can be replicated by placing them in the freezer for a few days before being stoned and steeped in gin. A very acceptable Christmas gift or you can just enjoy it yourself!

October is still a busy month for tasks in the garden or on your plot and sweeping leaves can be pretty much a full time job. If weather remains clement old summer bedding can be removed and re laced with ansies or wall owers

ring owering bulbs such as daffodils, narcissi, crocuses or dwarf irises can all be planted now. If you have plants in the greenhouse all year round it’s a good idea to give the glass a good clean to remove any shading to allow maximum light penetration through the winter. Tidy up rhubarb by removing any soggy leaves which are probably harbouring slugs and snails! Weed the patch as rhubarb needs a period of cold before it can grow in the Spring. Early varieties such as ‘Timperley Early’ require a relatively short cold spell. With Halloween at the end of the month, help your pumpkins to ripen ready for display by removing some of the leaves and supporting them on an old tile. Now that pond wildlife is less active take the opportunity to remove excess leaves, vegetation and other debris and maybe cover with netting to prevent leaves landing and rotting in the water.

Enjoy your gardening! Maggie Baldwin

Autumn Tidy Up

And just like that, October arrived and autumn is upon us. This is the month of nights drawing in and clocks going back. It doesn’t have to be a sad time, all seasons are good and it’s time to ease back and spend a bit more time slowing down and also getting some of the indoor jobs done which we put off in summer as we want to be outside as much as possible.

This is a good time to have a sort through your make up and skin care products, checking the dates and giving things a clean. Some things we may not have used in some time, mascaras for example often have a life span once opened of just 4 - 6 months. All products should have a symbol of a jar followed by a number eg 6, 12, 24. This means once opened that is how long the product should keep. I like to check through my skincare and makeup products regularly, making sure I use the oldest ones first emember, any eye encils need to be sharpened after use to prevent cross contamination. Mascaras and lipsticks can all harbour bacteria. I like to clean my makeup brushes in warm soapy water, gentle rinse and squeeze out using a clean towel and then place on a windowsill on kitchen paper to dry thoroughly.

Lots of makeup companies now offer a recycling system and may give you a bag in which to return the old packaging. If in any doubt it is always best to throw it out as it’s not worth the risk of eye infections etc. Don’t forget too that face sponges and cloths need regular cleaning and can be washed with sterilising uid I use the ty e for sterilising babies bottles.

Wishing you a happy and healthy October.

Competiton Success For Thetford Artist

A passion for painting has taken Thetford artist Lyn Aylward to London after she was shortlisted for a prestigious painting competition. Lyn is mainly self-taught, although she did spend a year at West Suffolk College as a mature student. She regularly exhibits with Breckland Artists and Artworks East. Lyn primarily paints portraits, although animals and birdlife often appear in her work. Visitors to Dad’s Army Museum will recognise Lyn’s work as she created the Bill Pertwee portrait on display in the Marigold Tearoom. In 2018 Lyn appeared on Sky Portrait Artist of the Year.

“I was delighted to hear that my painting ‘After the Walk’ had been selected from 836 entries to be shortlisted as one of eleven paintings for the London Graphic Centre Art Prize 2023 supported by Theo Pathitis of ‘Dragons Den’ fame. In September all the shortlisted artists were invited to the prize giving in Covent Garden. It was a truly wonderful evening where I met the other shortlisted artists and judges.”

Although Lyn had never met Helen in person, she made a connection with her online after seeing the image. Helen then gave Lyn permission to create a painting from her photo. “The photograph resonated with me as I spent lockdown at home, alone with my dog. It could easily have been an image of myself, after having walked my Springer Spaniel on a lonely day during the andemic I saw this re ected in the composition and particularly loved Helen’s thoughtful look. Her brightly coloured bedroom and the 1970s prints reminded me of my childhood spent in Thetford and added to my connection with the composition.” Lyn explained. “Sadly, I did not take home a prize but received some amazing, encouraging feedback from the judges, including Theo Pathitis who said my painting was absolutely amazing!”

going to be twice as big, Lyn said she’s heard that comment a few times as it’s so detailed. The judges commented that the painting was a great composition and use of colour, adding that the artist was able to ca ture a s ecific moment in time.

Currently Wymondham has a total of forty girls across all four age groups. The U14’s girls have enough girls to independently form their own team but all other age groups are required to cluster with other clubs to ensure there are enough girls to play matches safely. Last season the U14’s clustered with Lowestoft and Beccles as the combined team known as the ‘Titans’ and the girls won the Eastern Counties Plate against Shelford. he s itans also made it to the u final s Norwich ildcats in ril, finishing second lace which was a fantastic achievement for the U14’s!

Some of the girls have attended Leicester Tigers camps this year at Langley School and at home at Wymondham Rugby Club. The girls have enjoyed the camps and always come away buzzing especially after meeting Leicester Tigers and England player, Ben Youngs. Some of the girls recently attended a Centurion event at Bury Rugby Club where they met and spent time with former England Women’s player Rocky Clark MBE. Spending time with professional players gives the girls inspiration and also an opportunity to learn and grow in their own rugby journey. Girls rugby is a great team sport where you will make new friends, grow in confidence and find strength in your own ability. Come and give it a try! A warm welcome awaits you!
