ABOUT STYLE

Bargain Hunting For Your Summer Wardrobe by Janice Coyne, Style Consultant With the shops awash with special offers and the (early) start of the summer sales, I was reflecting on the wisdom of impulse shopping and bargain buying. When is a bargain not a bargain? When the garment is hanging in your wardrobe months later still with the tag on! With clothes shopping, as with any other purchases and especially in these cost conscious times, it is a good idea to pause before purchasing and consider how wearable the item is - how to decide? Cost per wear is a good way of determining whether something was a good buy or not. The outfits bought for special occasions such as the debs or a wedding are often in the category of worn once. The cost per wear for those garments is high unless another event allows for them to be worn and enjoyed again. By contrast, the new coat or dress that stretches the budget and has you pausing on your way to the till, may, if worn regularly, prove to be an inexpensive buy in the long run. The little cheap and cheerful tops and t-shirts that didn't cost much to start with but which don't survive more than 3 washes are probably relatively expensive if they have to be replaced regularly. Making a judgement on the quality and life expectancy of an article is part of our decision making process and our conclusion will probably vary depending on what's being bought. A useful question to ask yourself when holding a to die for dress, coat, jacket, etc. is - how many other items in my wardrobe can I wear this with? The ideal should be 4 or 5, to allow maximum mixing and matching with your existing wardrobe and to extend the option for putting outfits together. The ratio for tops to bottoms is 1:4. That is, for every skirt or pair of trousers on your bottom half, you 6 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON

should have 4 tops, t-shirts or blouses to wear with it. Sound like a lot? Think of the number of t-shirts that you can probably throw on with your favourite jeans and you see the principle in operation. If you extend this principle to the rest of your wardrobe you see quite clearly what's missing that could be preventing you from getting the maximum wear out of your existing clothes. Sound complicated? Help is at hand. I specialise in assessing your personal style, taking into account your body shape, lifestyle and colour analysis. Wardrobe de-cluttering, where we identify new outfits from existing garments and personal shopping for the missing links are all part of the services. Getting the full use out of your wardrobe is my aim. Happy bargain hunting ladies!

ABOUT RECIPE

Tomato and Basil Focaccia This recipe is taken from Tana Ramsay’s book, Tana Ramsays Real Family Food. The mum of four focuses all her recipes on family eating, where everyone from the family can get involved. So happy cooking, and of course eating! FOR THE DOUGH: 250ml/9fl oz water 3 tbsp olive oil 1_ tsp Maldon sea salt 400g/14oz white bread flour 2 _ tsp dried yeast 6 ice cubes FOR THE TOPPING 10 cherry tomatoes, halved Large handful of basil leaves, torn 25g/1oz grated Parmesan Olive oil for drizzling Maldon sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste Makes: 12 pieces Prep time: 60 minutes (45 minutes for resting the dough) Cooking time: 25 minutes

Method Place all the ingredients for the dough into a bowl and mix together (use a mixer with a dough hook if possible). When it is in a nice dough ball, knead on a lightly floured surface for approximately 5 minutes. Use the heel of one hand to push the dough away from you, simultaneously using the other hand to bring the dough back to the starting position. Place the dough in a greased mixing bowl and leave to rise in a warm place for approximately 45 minutes, until it is doubled in size. Preheat the oven to 190¡C/375¡F/GM5. Lightly grease a 33 x 23cm (13 x 9 inch) baking tin. Knead the dough on a floured surface, adding half the tomatoes and half of the torn basil leaves. Knead to mix through evenly. Place the dough into the baking tin, stretch it over the 10 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON

bottom and even it out. Using your fingers, dimple the top of the dough. Top with the remaining basil and tomatoes, pushing them a little into the dough. Sprinkle over the Parmesan cheese. Drizzle over the olive oil, letting it make pools in the finger dents. Sprinkle over some Maldon sea salt and ground black pepper. Place in the bottom third of the oven. Put 6 ice cubes in the bottom of the oven to create some steam, and leave to bake for 25 minutes until golden brown. Remove and slice into 12 pieces.

ABOUT LOCAL BUSINESS

Effective Debt Collection - A Must in Today’s Environment by Pauline Horkan, Dillon Solicitors

The following are a list of 10 tips to follow to help you collect your debts: 1. Check your terms and conditions of business. 2. Make sure you confirm an order for a supply of goods / services in writing. You should send a sales order form which should incorporate your terms of business (usually on the back of the form). When a solicitor is instructed on debt collection matters they will seek evidence of the “contract” i.e. order form, invoices etc. 3. Make sure you know who you are doing business with i.e. is it a Company or an individual. Get details of the correct address. 4. If you are dealing with a Company try and get a personal guarantee, in writing, from a Director. This may not always be possible. 5. Review your credit control system. Are you sending regular reminders? 6. Make it clear that you cannot continue to do business with a creditor until some / all of the existing debts are paid. It is worth noting that since the introduction of the Late Payments in Commercial Transaction Regulations in 2002, penalty interest applies if payments for commercial transactions are not met within 30 days, unless the agreement between the parties specifies otherwise. 7. Check out the creditworthiness of a new customer. A simple, inexpensive way to vet Companies is by checking their status on the Companies Registration Office website regularly and not only when the Company first purchases goods. If you require more up-to-date information you can carry out a full Company search. We can assist you in this. 8. As soon as it becomes clear that the debt is unlikely to be paid i.e. calls not being returned, then instruct a solicitor to issue a 10 day demand letter. 9. Don’t instruct your solicitor to write a demand letter unless you are prepared to proceed with Court proceedings immediately. If you do issue proceedings it will show you are taking the matter seriously and are not going away. 12 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON

10. Once judgement is obtained it may be enforced in a variety of ways. In some instances it may be enforced by a sheriff who may seize goods of the debtor. Alternatively, a judgement against a property owned by the debtor can be registered which means that if the debtor wishes to sell the property you must be repaid before they can do so. We have set up a customised Debt Collection Department in our office which uses a unique “case steps” process to ensure that all cases are managed proactively and efficiently. If you have any debt collection matters that we might be able to help you with do not hesitate to contact Pauline Horkan or Barbara Sherry on 01-2960666 or paulinehorkan@dillon.ie / barbarasherry@dillon.ie

ABOUT LOCAL FUNDRAISING

Highlighting – Local Man’s 4Peak’s Life Challenge Gerry and his wife Margaret at the peak of Carrantuohill.

Local man Gerry Walker climbed Carrantuohill on 30th May only 10 months after having a double lung transplant. The transplant took place in the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. Carrantuohill marked the first of 4 peaks in Gerry’s 4Peaks4Life challenge. Gerry will also climb the highest mountains in Wales, Scotland and England over five days from the 23rd to the 28th July. Gerry was born with Cystic Fibrosis. As a child Gerry’s Cystic fibrosis was mild and up to his mid thirties was leading and active life but by the age of 40 the disease was affecting his everyday life. IV antibiotic courses became more frequent and of longer duration. He became more dependent on oxygen and spent longer periods of time in hospital. Before his transplant, he was using oxygen for more than 16 hours a day. This time last year Gerry was unable to climb the stairs without getting completely breathless. Gerry started struggling to complete basic tasks and hold down his job as a Census Statistician. The day he got the call from the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle is a day that Gerry describes as the day he got his life back, with the double lung transplant he had been waiting for transforming his life completely. Gerry is climbing Carrantuohill, Snowdon, 14 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON

Ben Nevis and Scaffell Pike before the 29th July, the anniversary of his transplant and his 20th wedding anniversary, as a tribute to his life saving donor. Gerry will place a rock originating from each of the 4 peaks back at each summit with an engraving “Remember Martin an unknown friend who donated his lungs allowing me to climb Carrantuohill after a long exile”. After the transplant Gerry says he needed to give something back and create chances for others waiting for life saving operations. Gerry realises he is a lucky man as a lot of patients are dying while waiting for that life saving call. If you become a multi-organ donor your heart and two lungs could save three lives, your two kidneys and liver could save another three lives. Gerry successfully climbed Carrantuohill via Brother O’Shea's Gully on 30th May. The climb, taking ten hours, was a long tough day for Gerry but he felt a great sense of achievement on reaching the top of the highest mountain in Ireland once again. 4Peaks4Life is raising funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland and the Freeman Cardio Centre Transplant Fund. Please donate on line at www.4Peaks4Life.ie, where you can also sign up as an organ donor. You can email Gerry at hillwalker@eircom.net or call him on 087 654 3798.

Getting From A to Z! Local taxi company A2Z taxis launched in November 2008 with a simple idea of offering a clean, friendly and reliable local taxi service and where drivers are treated professionally. The company has three local residents at the helm, David Murphy (Dundrum), Frank McCauley and Michael Duffy (Rathfarnham). A2Z serves the residents and businesses of Dundrum, Sandyford, Cherrywood, Rathfarnham, Harold’s Cross, Sandymount, Walkinstown, Tallaght and everywhere in between. David Murphy, their Sales and Marketing Director, told me “We don’t wish to be the biggest taxi company in Dublin, we’re just happy to be the best!” An aspiration all companies strive to achieve. “We’re more like a family than a corporation”, David’s partner Frank explained. “That’s a message that clearly resonates with customers”. pruning can encourage a second flowering late in the season.

Mow the lawn at least once a week and feed it if not done already.

Containers and Baskets: pinch out the growing tips to encourage plants to produce bushy even growth and more flowers.

Patios look great with plenty of colourful tubs and pots—but remember, the more pots the more watering and deadheading needed! July is an ideal month in which to take cuttings. Check that birds and cats aren’t getting into the greenhouse whilst open during the day—use netting if necessary. Cut down early flowering perennials: early

ABOUT HYPNOTHERAPY, COUNSELLING & PSYCHOTHERAPY

Talking Therapy with Ian Espstein Dip Hyp, Ad. Hyp, BSYA (CUR Hyp), MASC (P.Th.) Many people have heard the words ‘Hypnotherapy’, ‘Counselling’ and ‘Psychotherapy’, but what do they mean? We asked local therapist Ian Epstein to explain a little about the therapies he offers his clients. Suggestion Therapy: This type of therapy is used for simple problems such as Smoking, Relaxation, Weight Loss, Pre-Exam Nerves, Confidence. It normally requires two or three sessions. Analytical Therapy: This is used to discover the root cause of deeper emotional problems. This type of therapy requires a minimum of eight sessions. Counselling & Psychotherapy: This therapy will engage the client in conversation or activity aimed at trying to uncover the repressed material. Hypnosis: Hypnosis is a state of guided relaxation. In this state of heightened awareness, positive suggestions easily and naturally achieve positive goals.

by Fiona Tuomey It is a natural state and is non-addictive. It is one of the safest forms of therapy. You remain awake throughout. Most people say "it did not work as I heard everything and I could have opened my eyes at any time but did not bother". There is no one feeling to describe being hypnotised, but you will feel mentally and physically relaxed and enjoy your own personal experience on this inner adventure. Hypnosis is not ‘sleep’. Your body is very relaxed but you remain aware. You cannot be asked to do something against your will. In fact you would come out of the hypnotic state immediately if any such action was suggested to you. Hypnotherapy is not just for those who are suffering from problems. Everyday upsets and worries can be debilitating and eventually can cause stress. Hypnotherapy can be a very useful tool in helping you to handle this. Hypnotherapy can also be used with children. Problems that are caught at an early stage can prevent a lifetime of anxiety and worry. You can contact Ian Epstein in confidence on 296 0611 and your first session is free of charge.

ABOUT LOCAL BUSINESS

Taking Tea at The Marlay by Fiona Tuomey Sue went on to say “Nursing Homes over the years have improved and The Marlay is one of the Nursing Homes developing and leading the changes not only in the standard of care it provides but also in the areas of activities and dining. Our diverse activity programme includes art and music therapy for the soul, while our beauty and complementary therapies look after the body”.

Alzheimer’s Tea day was marked on May 7th in The Marlay Nursing home with residents, visitors and staff enjoying tea, home-made cakes and music while raising €1,000 for the Alzheimer's Society. It also was also an opportunity to invite local residents to come and see at first hand the nursing home and its wonderful facilities. “Serving and being part of the local community is very important to us” said Sue Cameron, Director of Operations at the Marlay. “This is the second time this year we have invited people to come and visit us. We recently held an Open Day at which over 70 people dropped in to see us. Giving people the opportunity to see the home and its facilities, talk to staff and ask questions without obligation was welcomed by those who came. With an ageing population most of us know someone who is caring for an older relative and while thankfully most of us will live out our lives at home it is good to know that there is somewhere within the community available for those of us who may at some time need care within a residential setting. The feedback from the day was very positive and possibly the most frequent and nicest comment being that it didn’t feel like a Nursing Home!” .

30 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON

“Food is one of life’s pleasures and our menu choices prepared by our excellent chefs, trained in nutrition ensure that mealtimes are high on the list of enjoyable experiences. The backbone of any Nursing Home is its staff and here in The Marlay we are fortunate to have a very experienced team lead by the Director of Nursing Colette Clabby who is also local to the area.” The Marlay opened its doors in 2007 to residents who require long term Nursing Home care. It also serves people who require Convalescence care following a stay in hospital and Respite care for those who are usually cared for in their own home but need a short time in a Nursing Home. For more information or to arrange a visit to see around contact Sue or Colette on 01 499 4444. They would be delighted to welcome you.

Keep Your Laptop Happy! by Niamh Keenan

It’s that time of year again where temperatures climb (we hope) or when you may be taking your laptop to a sunny climate! Take care in warm and hot weather to follow these tips to ensure you use your laptop safely and don’t have any problems with it. 1) Safe Temperature Range Most laptop computers operate properly in the safe temperature range of 10 to 35 degrees celsius. Keep in mind that when bringing a laptop in from the warm hot air, the laptop must cool down to the interior temperature before you use it. By the same token if you use your laptop outdoors, then let the laptop warm up to the outside temperature before starting it up. 2) Hot Cars Just as you wouldn’t leave people or animals in a car in hot weather, you should not leave your laptop and other mobile gear either. Leaving your laptop closed in a vehicle in hot temperatures will cause damage to your laptop. The heat is not good for the internal components or the external casings. 3) Bright Sun Never leave your laptop where it is exposed to direct sunlight, whether it is in use or shut down. If you must use your laptop outside in bright conditions you can use either: • a laptop glare screen which cuts down on the glare caused by the sun • a laptop hood which cuts down on the amount of light directed at the laptop display. 4) Humidity Humidity is the amount of moisture in the air and the recommended safe range of relative humidity is 10-80%. Moisture can cause damage to the internal components of a 38 | ABOUT KNOCKYLON

laptop and you may not even realise that the damage has occurred. 5) Take it Out If you use your laptop in hot temperatures consider using a removable hard drive to store your data on. This way you can help protect your data and ensure that your removable hard drive stays protected from exposure to heat and the sun. 6) Keep it Cool Use a laptop stand to disperse heat that your laptop generates. Laptop stands are available in a variety of styles to suit your working needs. There are laptop stands which include fans to help dissipate the heat and keep your laptop working at its best. 7) Pack it Wisely Using a properly fitted and well-padded laptop case for your mobile gear will help keep it insulated against heat, moisture and direct sunlight. When buying your laptop case make sure all your mobile gear will fit securely and be protected from the effects of weather.

Summer Safety - Wrap, Splat, Hat! Whether you are taking day trips or long holidays in Ireland, safety on the beach is paramount and means you can have more fun! Recently schoolchildren in South Dublin have been learning how to keep themselves safe in the sun thanks to Garnier Ambre Solaire, which has produced free Sun Awareness Packs for primary schools throughout the county. Designed in association with the National Schools Partnership, the pack is based around ‘Wrap, Splat, Hat’ – a simple call to action slogan to help kids to remember the three important steps to sun protection: wrap up with a t-shirt and shorts, splat on some sun screen, and put on a wide brimmed hat. ARIES

LIBRA

As you are now in the throes of newness in most areas of your life, you hardly notice what’s under your own nose. In short, the best things in life are around you now and it is up to you to open your eyes or be the loser. What’s on offer? A change in love levels and improved finances.

This recession has had a bigger impact on you than you expected. You must over the next few months retrain your thinking and whilst working hard to maintain the status quo, exercise a sense of gracious patience until the financial storm subsides. A wee bit of positive luck coming your way now Libra. Enjoy!

TAURUS That call you have been waiting on is in the process of formulating the right words. You are the earthiest sign in the zodiac and don’t ask for too much in the line of material goods, however, your ethics are extremely high and you will only accept what is truly heartfelt. Love, honour and security are your destiny.

GEMINI Allowing jealousies interfere with your daily life can only leave you feeling the ultimate loser, because, you see you are wrong in certain assumptions and don’t see the good things on offer for you and yours. Penny pinching now gives better scope for luxuries later on in the year. Be ready to accept the offer of a lifetime.

No need to lose the head with this, just deal with and adjust to the immediate changes. travel across water to the Mediterranean islands is forecast in this spread. Also, a Turkish beach with your loving partner is on the cards.

LEO Business can be irritatingly slow at this time, but stick with it and you will see marginal, though steady improvements. An idea you harboured involving the catering trade is a future winner and must not be discarded. Cards advise that you keep very quiet about this to avoid unnecessary complications.

You are suddenly seeing the world with different, hopeful eyes. Your perspective is honed to a higher level of spirituality and as such creating a more ambient, peaceful you.

SAGITTARIUS Your friend needs your kind words at this time. Her future is brighter than her today. A trip to Scotland is forecast in this spread, as is the sunshine holiday of your dreams. CAPRICORN You are drawn to the ancient civilisation of Egypt? A past life connection is the real pull. Preparation now sees you stand in the same spot as you did thousands of years ago. The next few weeks sees you signing up for classes which help you put perspective into your life and purpose on the earth at this time.

AQUARIUS The employment you seek is on the cards for you now. Cards advise that you are especially careful with cash over the next few months and this pays huge dividends in the not too distant future. Re-negotiating a house deal is the way to go now as all is not lost. Your dream awaits your call. Do it now!

You just need to give credit where due and stay away from those who have a negative influence over your life. Work is offered to you and if you don’t do someone else will. Throw pride away.

Can Spirituality Change Anything? by Margaret Noctor (Mags)

The times we find ourselves living in are as confusing and uncertain as has ever been in recent history. Most of us cannot even depend on the security of employment, or for many even look to the prospect of securing a chosen property to live in. Where to look for solace, protection and guidance? The answer lies in looking inside ourselves and connecting to the higher power of the heavens. True! The power of prayer is immeasurable in assisting us in all aspects of our daily lives. To know that we are at one with the heavens and are not alone can give us the most wonderful sense of hope and a power over our own destiny. Yes, spirituality can change everything.
