Welcome to A+ Magazine, a Canberra-centric showcase and guide to what’s happening around Australia’s capital city. Produced biannually by Iconic Hotels, A+ Magazine offers our valued Abode Hotels guests a snapshot of what’s on offer during their stay, and our airport lounge readers a myriad of reasons to visit or return to Canberra.

National Portrait Gallery Director Karen Quinlan AM If faces are mirrors to the mind, then Director of the National Portrait Gallery of Australia, Karen Quinlan AM, has some mighty minds around her. Home to over 2,600 portraits, the NPG Australia shines a perfectly positioned light on the known and perhaps not-so-known faces of the world. A small shut down over April – August this year has afforded newly appointed Karen and her team time to reflect on exhibitions, past and present, and pave the way forward to an impressive line-up of future blockbusters.

peaking with Karen on her role day to day, or even day to night - as she keynotes for audiences from the academic realm, the arts sector or the general public some evenings - her role as Director is dynamic. “Like any job, no two days are the same,” she notes. “I am amazed at what can come across my desk. I can be reviewing and planning the forward exhibition schedule in the morning and then overseeing a well-ordered annual budget that afternoon.”

Previously the Director of the Bendigo Art Gallery, Karen moved to Canberra in December 2018 just in time for the Christmas holiday period. Karen says, “It turned out to be quite fortuitous as I was able to meet staff at the Gallery before and after their well-deserved breaks. And on a personal level it allowed me to settle into life in Canberra in a very positive and optimistic way.”

Grateful to have been at the helm of positioning Bendigo within the cultural tourism map, and realising the potential of regional Australia, Karen now feels lucky to head up the team at NPG Australia. Noting the similarities between the two locations, she easily made the switch to Canberra and relishes the new national focus of her role.

From April to August this year, the NPA Australia closed its doors for some necessary rectification works and maintenance. When closed, time was spent reviewing existing programming and operations, as well as planning and prepping for future exhibitions and direction. Scheduled to reopen to the public in early September 2019, the NPG Australia welcomes an exciting program for 2020.

“Women In Vogue will open in October, as we celebrate 60 years of this extraordinary publication. The exhibition will be archived together with a special tribute to some remarkable Australian women who have featured in the pages of

Vogue, and includes iconic portraits of Kylie Minogue and Elle Macpherson, among others. Rare examples of archived magazines will be on show, from the early decades of publication through to bold photographs of women of the 21st century,” says Karen. “2020 will be a very exciting year with the commencement of a revitalised exhibition program that will be broadly based around the four seasons.”

Stressing inclusion, Karen notes that the NPG Australia’s revised exhibition program and annual cycle means that art from across the country and the globe will be accessible to all visitors. As well as focussed exhibitions on individual artists of local and international acclaim, there will also be extraordinary loans from around the world of individual portraits. Via the NPG Australia’s reopening and reimagination, “we can create a balance of popular and niche exhibitions that will attract new and defined audiences,” says Karen.

When asked about her favourite portrait in the gallery, Karen is appropriately diplomatic. However, when pressed further, and with her purely personal and subjective hat on, she expresses that she will always admire portraits of strong females – of which there are countless examples.

On the overall experience, Karen notes, the NPG Australia “is a unique institution because it combines social history with the visual arts and that combination resonates for our audiences offering an experience that cannot be found elsewhere in this country. In many ways we document and preserve the biography of Australians who are represented visually by the portraits.”

E

very November, Canberra welcomes a packed program of exhibitions, talks, tours and workshops celebrating all facets of design. From open studios, to voyages through the homes of strangers to the ins and outs (and spouts) of designing a teapot, DESIGN Canberra showcases the best in local creative design.

From a festival of 24,000 visitors in its first year back in 2014, the small but mighty team behind the event have watched it emerge into a global phenomenon, attracting a record 112,000 people last year. Through the support of volunteers, sponsors and the ACT Government, DESIGN Canberra has become one of the city’s biggest annual attractions.

On the success of the festival, CEO/Artistic Director of CraftACT and DESIGN Canberra Rachael Coghlan says “DESIGN Canberra has resonated with ever-increasing audiences near and far because design is in our city’s DNA. Canberra has been, and always will be, a living design laboratory. Our festival celebrates this authentic truth, and demonstrates how design disciplines, craft and art play an essential role in creating our liveable city, developing our economy, promoting tourism, enhancing our international reputation and building a thriving community."

This year’s festival explores the theme of UTOPIA, a vision of a world where everything appears perfect. The ideal site for an examination of utopian ideals is Canberra.

From Walter Burley Griffin’s original vision of a mapped city of democracy to looking at the city’s current renewal programs, increased development and infrastructure. The nation’s capital regularly explores responsible, sustainable and creative opportunities for the future.

A veritable feast of design for designers and design aficionados, DESIGN Canberra is a platform for celebration and discovery. Now in its sixth year, the event continues to inspire new and repeat attendees, and places Canberra on the highly designed map it deserves.

Phoebe Porter For the last three years, DESIGN Canberra has invited a local designer to create the look and feel of the festival. This year’s designer-in-residence is acclaimed contemporary jeweller, Phoebe Porter.

nown for her innovative mixture of industrial materials with precious elements such as gold and silver, local artist Phoebe Porter was commissioned to create the 2019 signature artwork showcased throughout this year’s festival.

Opening Party + Silent Auction 8 November Celebrate all things design at the launch of this year’s festival by taking home your very own piece of authentic local design at the silent auction. With an experimental lighting design, live music, local wines, craft beer and cocktails on offer, this night is a highlight.

Object Subject: 2019 National Design Writing Conference 8 - 9 November Listen to a mixture of designers, writers, bloggers, publishers, researchers, collectors and design lovers spark conversation and discuss the role and responsibility of design as an agent of positive change within our society. This event will get you thinking about the social, ethical and environmental change good design can achieve on a global scale.

Reflecting the theme of UTOPIA and celebrating the Bauhaus 100th anniversary, Porter's Elements of Balance takes the form of a crane, familiar to Canberra’s current skyline. The deceptively simple design balances two contrasting elements perfectly. Five grams of gold, a highly valued, traditional material balanced against five grams of aluminium, an industrial material representing progress and mass-produced objects of desire.

Graduate of ANU’s School of Art and Design, trained by German-born Silversmith, Johannes Kuhnen and mentored by Australian Jeweller, Blanche Tilden, Phoebe Porter’s work has exhibited nationally and globally. Throughout her work, Phoebe interrogates traditional values and ideas of what is precious, using jewellery as a lens to examine greater themes.

Postcard from the edge Hailing from the heart of the nation’s capital, Tommy Balogh is a multi-disciplinary artist creating organic abstract artworks that transform with coloured light and become windows into foreign, yet familiar, picturescapes.

Tommy’s predominantly large format work looks to make the viewer feel something that defies the logical and rational, that borders on the spiritual, undefinable and seemingly uncapturable. A ‘postcard from the edge’, some might say.

from an early age and I enjoy challenging the ‘known’, to turn ideas into reality. I’ve come to enjoy taking risks in creating my art, to be ‘uncomfortable’. This is how I learn and set a path towards discovery.

What inspires you?

We caught up with Tommy to find out more about his art, his inspiration and what he’s got coming up that Canberra and visitors to the city can get excited about.

How did you get in to this style of art?

Through experimentation and the desire to push boundaries to discover new things. I’ve been interested in the sciences

I am inspired by many things; from the natural environment and my experiences. When I create my art, I am a creator.

I ask questions to open my mind, and that frees my art.

Questions ultimately drive my search into the unknown.

Pollock, Rothko and Monet have always spoken to me, and more recently the work of James Turrell. These artists showed me that art has power; it’s not just decoration.

Talk to us about your large format and architectural works Going big elicits awe. However, smaller more intimate pieces have their own dynamic. The large works are pinnacles of my art; they transform the energy and mood of architectural spaces. I collaborated with award-winning Canberra builder Natura Homes to create a 4m high interactive piece for their display home in the suburb of Throsby.

What work of yours can Canberrans look forward to seeing over spring/summer 2019-20?

The NewActon lobby activation will be complete so the public can see that at any time. The Throsby art piece can be viewed by appointment with Natura Homes, and my broader collection of art can be seen at Citywest Carpark, including the famous 12m piece VOYAGE: fingerprints of consciousness.

View from the top There’s a certain whimsy and romance to hot air ballooning. Something magical about the perfect balance required for a balloon to take flight.

anberra is one of the only capital cities in the world where you can regularly take flight in a hot air balloon to get a bird’s eye view of the city’s landscape. Weather permitting, balloons will fly each day of the year, providing locals and visitors an iconic early morning skyline full of brightly coloured fabric, masterfully carrying woven wicker baskets full of smiling passengers.

Director and Senior Pilot with Balloon Aloft, Hyung Joo Kim, makes a living out of flying hot air balloons, and sheds some light on both the balance and the magic of his line of work.

How did you become a hot air balloon pilot?

I was studying at university in Seoul, Korea, and decided to try something new and join the university’s hot air balloon club. After a few years and a lot of work, I finally qualified as a hot air balloon pilot.

What do you love about hot air balloons?

The best thing about ballooning is being with a group of happy people in the early morning – I love showing people Canberra from my perspective.

Also, unlike other form of aviation, when you pilot a hot air balloon you never know where you will end up.

Each flight is a different mystery tour!

What is hot air ballooning like in Canberra?

Canberra is quite simply the best place in the world to fly. There aren’t many capital cities in the world that you can fly over and Canberra really delivers.

It is such a beautiful city with the lake, iconic buildings, trees, open spaces and mountains to the west.

Floriade Spring into the southern hemisphere’s biggest flower festival.

Every year Canberra welcomes almost 500,000 local, interstate and international visitors to gaze upon the millions of blooming bulbs on display at Floriade. The month-long celebration features markets, rides, regional food and wine, live entertainment, sunshine and petals upon petals.

Complementing the famous festival of flora, is Dogs’ Day Out. A day where pups big and small can sniff their way around the park and delight in all things Floriade. MEET THE MAKER

In the bag From her first basket weaving experience at Woodford Folk Festival, Queensland – where she wove with raffia for 3 hours and created a basket the size of her palm - to weaving baskets in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Canberra-based designer, Georgina Whigham has textiles in her blood.

A

graduate of Industrial Design at University of Canberra, and trained at the Kawashima Textile School in Kyoto, Japan, Georgina champions handmade work and authentic design.

An exhibition designer at the National Gallery of Australia, by day and weaver by night, Georgina launched her own business, GEORGE, in May this year.

Inspired by the dance of discarded plastic bags in the wind, GEORGE offers a limited collection of handwoven bags which seek to challenge our perception of product lifecycles.

The current collection of cotton bags are woven on a 4-shalf floor loom.

Due to the characteristics of the hand weaving process each bag is unique.

Each bag is designed to be woven in one linear continual pattern piece rather than weaving fabric and cutting the pattern pieces out. This reduces the seams and forms a simplified and refined product. Georgina notes that she honours “the inconsistencies and imperfections that come with the handmade process and the beauty this imbues into each piece”.

When asked about the longevity of her products and the desire to employ ancient craft techniques, Georgina explains that it allows her to make each piece more authentic. “Most garments are handmade to an extent, however they do not sustain the beauty and cultural wisdom of age-old craftsmanship techniques. It is these methods, which allow the product

to embody more than being ‘just a bag’. Understanding where a product comes from and how it’s made can change our behaviour around fashion lifecycles”.

Despite the rapid decline in craftsmanship as our society continues to become more technology driven, Georgina feels that ancient crafts will be critical in the future. “To me it will still play the same role it always has, which is to explore the human experience beyond the visual and cerebral: to explore it through our hands,” she says.

Each bag Georgina weaves for GEORGE is made-to-order and takes eight hours to create. This process, whilst largely meditative, has recently become more than just a side-hustle for the local designer. With increased interest in her work, Georgina is working to strict deadlines to complete each product. Currently working on new pieces for Melbourne Fashion Week 2019 and planning an exciting collaboration set to launch in mid2020, GEORGE is one to watch. georgelabel.com

What do you like most about the sport?

I really enjoy playing with a team and I am fortunate to have made some lifelong friends. Additionally, cricket has provided me with opportunity to travel the world and has supported me with my university studies.

When did you first start playing cricket?

I was 7 years old when I played my first competitive match. I played in my brother Troy’s U9 St. Edwards Cricket team. Dad was the coach of the team, and they were short of players, so I ended up playing the whole season.

Did you always enjoy the sport?

With all sport you have your highs and lows and you don’t always love the game. The best thing about playing cricket and being in a team is that you have teammates who will take on that extra load and have your back when things are not going well.

Was cricket a big part of where you grew up or went to school?

Growing up in Tamworth, I played competitive sport every weekend.

I played at school, in the streets with our next-door neighbours and in the backyard with dad and my 2 older brothers. We played a lot of cricket, touch football, soccer, baseball and tennis.

What do you find the most challenging?

Whilst I love playing with a team, there are a lot of different personalities and it can be challenging to build relationships. For the team to be successful, I understand that as captain it is crucial to build relationships with all players and staff and that it does take time.

What do you think the future of cricket looks like for the Abode Hotels ACT Meteors?

We have recently undergone personnel changes within the organisation leadership. It is a very exciting time to be a part of Cricket ACT and with the changes being made, I believe success for the Abode Hotels ACT Meteors is just around the corner.

What do you think the sport gives to communities and young women?

I think cricket is a sport that can bring communities together and

provide opportunities for young men and women to pursue their dreams.

I believe cricket continues to evolve to become a more accessible and enjoyable game for all involved.

I always dreamt of playing cricket for Australia and I was extremely fortunate to have a pathway to follow from the age of 10 all the way through to the National Level. I was fortunate to have the support of my parents and my brothers who all helped me achieve my dreams. The Australian Cricket Association financially assisted me with my education. Cricket allowed me to travel the world. It is now a genuine career path for young girls with Cricket Australia providing greater financial support. I am excited for the young girls who are now starting their cricket journeys. Women’s cricket has come a long way.

How has playing in the Abode Hotels ACT Meteors impacted your life?

I am grateful for the opportunity Abode Hotels ACT Meteors has provided me. They have assisted me in becoming a better cricketer; they have allowed me to develop my leadership skills; but more importantly, they have given me every opportunity to become a better person.

Definitely – I’d love to give back in some way like the senior girls did when I was younger.

I believe it provides direction – like any sport, having something to work on through school and into university is great. Cricket keeps you healthy, motivated and there are so many life skills you learn from the sport. Not to mention the support we get from the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) that actually ensures we work on our lives outside cricket.

How has playing in the Abode Hotels ACT Meteors impacted your life?

It’s given me a family away from home - our whole organisation is like one big family and it’s nice to feel so connected within a community.

Pet care with Melanie Newman We almost can’t believe it, but national dog grooming champion, international competitor and business entrepreneur, Melanie Newman quite possibly loves dogs more than we do. Across the past 10 years, I have competed in dog grooming competitions in the USA and throughout Europe. I’ve won a range of international competitions, but my

favourite highlight would have to be winning Best in Show at Artero Grand Slam in Barcelona back in 2017 against another 500 competitors. It’s the Wimbeldon of dog grooming, and I am the only Australian to win a Best in Show in Europe to date!

Working in the industry, I realised that products are so important – for both humans and dogs. I have very sensitive skin and felt there wasn’t a great range of gentle products on the market that suited my needs as a professional dog groomer, so my husband and I started working on our own. We wanted to create a more natural product without harsh cleaning agents and synthetic fragrances. We only intended to use the products in our salon, but once friends and customers started to try them and noticed the difference in quality we decided to manufacture for
