on a thousand-kilometer journey across the andes — lived over more than two weeks above 4,000 meters of altitude — this project set out to explore the delicate coexistence between human presence and a landscape as inhospitable as it is sublime, shaped by volcanoes. the path through chile and bolivia crossed extreme terrains: active volcanoes, silent deserts, sudden snowstorms, lightning-filled skies, and endless salt flats. along the way, it revealed how materials born from the earth’s primordial movements can be welded by human presence, even as their foundations lie within constantly transforming spaces. this initiated a trajectory toward tectonic and structural analysis, and an anthropological-spatial outcome, within a context of multi-existence, where fauna and flora survive according to their specific spatial conditions.
termas de puritama
the puritama hot springs are located in northern chile, about 30 km from san pedro de atacama, nestled in a canyon at 3,475 meters of altitude. eight natural thermal pools, with temperatures between 26°c and 33°c, are distributed along the course of the puritama river. the site is managed by the company explora, which also oversees the surrounding environmental reserve. the waters are of volcanic origin, heated by geothermal activity from the subsoil — a common feature in the andean region. this constant source of heat and moisture creates a micro-habitat that attracts native fauna, such as vicuñas, amid the desert. the vegetation surrounding the puritama river is adapted to arid and high-altitude conditions, serving as food for local fauna. the red wooden walkway, designed by chilean architect germán del sol, stands out for its suspension over the river — a striking element in the earthy arid landscape. natural light enters through the openings of the canyon, illuminating the structures and creating moving shadows throughout the day in the bathing houses.
the polques hot springs are located in southwestern bolivia, at about 4,394 meters of altitude, on the edge of laguna salada, within the salar de chalviri. they are part of the eduardo avaroa andean fauna national reserve, a protected area and national park managed by the national service of protected areas (sernap).the waters, of geothermal and volcanic origin, maintain an average temperature of 29 °c and form natural pools in a landscape marked by volcanoes, lagoons, and rock formations. local fauna includes flamingos, vicuñas, and other species adapted to the harsh climate of the altiplano. the flora is composed of high-altitude vegetation, such as llareta, which grows in dense green cushions. there is no known architect associated with the existing structures at the site.
london mezzanine
there isn’t much to say about norman foster: it feels silly, which suits the cloudy city of london. the marks left on this ground are clear, where vast spaces were built above and below the surface. what contrasts most is the glass and metal; what prevails is what shines the brightest.
this commissioned work aims to document aspects of wheat flour production along the coast of santa catarina state. this project is part of a joint effort between the federal university of santa catarina and the national institute of historic and artistic heritage to register the intangible production practices of traditional communities. these communities experience a communal process of land and labor, following a centuries-old production method that today struggles to survive amid the rapid urbanization of surrounding cities such as florianópolis, balneário camboriú, and itajaí. this photographic documentation seeks to preserve the cultural heritage and traditional knowledge of these coastal communities, capturing both the technical aspects of flour production and the social dynamics that have sustained these practices across generations.
the bread museum, designed by brasil arquitetura studio, responds to a collective desire to preserve the production processes inherited from italian immigrants in southern brazil. this intervention, winner of the rodrigo melo franco de andrade award for outstanding heritage interventions in brazil, was carried out in an old mill located in the center of a small interior town, ilópolis. the creation of an annex that establishes a relationship of respect and contemporaneity with the mill aims not to elevate it to the status of art, but to structure it within a new cultural ensemble that preserves it and allows familiar accessibility to local communities in the educational and cultural processes promoted.
