2024-2025 Head of School Report to the Community

Head of School

This past year, we centered our community around a simple open-ended query: “What does it mean to be a Quaker School?”

As with all good queries, the richness was in the process. We explored this question in Meeting for Worship, in classrooms, in faculty circles and in quiet conversations among students and adults. What emerged was not a single definition, but a shared sense of purpose: that to be a Quaker school is to be a place where truth-seeking, belonging, reflection and transformation are not occasional moments but daily practices.

We saw this come to life across campus. Our Inquiry Lab launched its inaugural project on the role of technology in our learning environment. Students and teachers engaged deeply with questions of ethics and innovation. More recently, faculty participated in our first all-school summer Learning Lab in years, diving into the opportunities and challenges of AI in education. At every turn, our community returned to core queries: What kind of learners — and people — are we shaping? How do we steward both tradition and change?

We also witnessed extraordinary expressions of support and trust from those who believe deeply in our mission. A transformative bequest from the family of Craig SanPietro P’06 allowed us to renovate and reimagine one of our science classrooms for 21st-century learning. And a generous five-figure bequest from Bruce Stewart, former Head of School at AFS, reminds us that leadership, vision and care leave lasting legacies. These gifts are powerful acts of stewardship, investments in both our facilities and in the futures of young people.

Looking ahead, we are taking the spirit of this year’s discernment and translating it into action. In the coming year, our focus will be on curricular throughlines, reimagining what it means to have a truly integrated curriculum from Early Childhood through Upper School. This work will connect disciplines, divisions and values, making learning more meaningful for our students and teachers.

While our guiding query may never have a single answer, it comes to life in the way we teach, learn and care for one another. That is the heart of being a Quaker school, and it is the foundation we will continue to build on together.

State of the School

As we reflect on the past year, I’m proud to share that Abington Friends School remains strong. AFS has seen steady, planned enrollment growth over the past 10 years, reflecting both programmatic strength and strategic admission work. Our fundraising is healthy, and we continue to invest deeply in access, equity and excellence across all divisions. At the same time, we recognize the broader headwinds facing independent schools and are thinking proactively about our future, including an upcoming plan to update our campus and a renewed effort to bring our alumni community back to campus.

Honoring Craig SanPietro’s Legacy

Lisa Ammirati, Chair of the Science Department

Scientific discovery flourishes when students are immersed in environments that foster exploration, collaboration and hands-on learning — principles at the heart of Abington Friends School’s science program. Thanks to a generous bequest from former School Committee member and alumni parent Craig SanPietro P’06, we are taking an important step toward modernizing our science learning spaces to reflect the depth and rigor of our curriculum.

His generosity supported the revitalization of an Upper School science classroom, equipping it with modern tools and technologies that expand students’ ability to conduct experiments, analyze data and engage deeply with the scientific process. This renovation serves as a model for future improvements during our campus planning, ensuring that our learning environments evolve in ways that best serve our students and their learning.

In honoring his legacy, we reaffirm our commitment to nurturing the next generation of scientists, engineers and changemakers — students who, like Craig, will dream boldly and make an impact.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Craig SanPietro and others for their donations, making this renovation possible.

Craig lived with an unquenchable curiosity and a drive to understand and shape the world around him.

A graduate of Caltech, founder of a technology company and a contributor to NASA’s lunar landing module, he exemplified the power of inquiry and innovation. Craig’s generosity extended beyond personal achievement into championing educational opportunities for students who, like himself, faced adversity and rose to meet it.

New Ideas Take Root in the Fourth Century Center

As AFS enters its fourth century of Quaker education, the Fourth Century Center at Abington Friends School is dedicated to fostering innovation, collaboration, research and professional growth within our community.

The 2024-2025 school year was devoted to defining and advancing our mission of preparing students and educators for the challenges and opportunities of Friends education.

The Fourth Century Space was constructed to include four offices (two of which are newly constructed), with a common meeting space designed for faculty brainstorming and gathering. The space has been fully outfitted with modern furniture and audio/ visual equipment to support collaboration and innovation.

Updates from Research and Design Fellowships

Faculty are encouraged to apply for Research and Design Fellowships to fund, develop and fast-track transformative, research-informed programs into AFS classrooms.

Molly Robertson, Upper School English Teacher

After a year of researching writing center best practices and exploring writing center models at other schools, the AFS writing center is now open!

Erin Timmer, Middle School Social Studies Teacher

Our Middle School has implemented a new learning support model directly influenced by our research and in consultation with peer schools.

Justin Solonynka, Choral Director

We launched Critical Friends Groups, which are structured peer-to-peer professional development groups for educators, focused on improving student learning and fostering a collaborative school culture.

Michelle Podulka, Lower School Librarian

We are continuing our exploration of math achievement across demographic groups by collecting data about student achievement over time. We intend to implement the Building Thinking Classrooms curriculum in multiple grade levels.

To put research into action, the Center hosted a 3-day summer Learning Lab on AI in education, led by Nate Green of Sidwell Friends School. Faculty and staff from across all three divisions participated.

The Inquiry Lab: Turning Research into Reflection at AFS

Launched by The Fourth Century Center, the Inquiry Lab brings students, faculty and administrators together to engage in collaborative research on topics with school-wide significance. In its inaugural year, 13 faculty, staff and administrators partnered with an Upper School student to explore technology use at AFS.

Each team conducted literature reviews, school interviews and original research. The work was featured in the Spring 2025 issue of Independent School Magazine.

FOCUS AREAS:

• Cell phone and device use in Quaker schools

• The impact of AI on teaching and learning

• Technology skills and ethics curricula

The Center partnered with Dr. Siva Mathiyazhagan (University of Pennsylvania/ Harvard Berkman Klein Center) as research advisor and engaged a research assistant to synthesize findings into a formal report, to be published later in the 2025-2026 school year.

“Values are at the center of the curriculum, but they are not shackles to bind and narrow. They are the energizing factors in the ambience of the Abington community that make people actively uncomfortable in the face of injustice and discrimination, and they are the force that binds the Abington family into a centered community impatient for an end to war and ignorance and full anticipation for a world that honors joy and play and concern for one’s fellow travelers.”

1984–1998

Values and Purpose in Education

We were saddened by the news of the passing of Bruce Blakely Stewart, who served as Head of Abington Friends School from 1984 to 1998. Bruce passed away peacefully at his home in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on January 26, 2025, at the age of 85.

Bruce’s tenure at AFS was marked by his unwavering commitment to Friends education and his dedication to fostering an inclusive, values-driven community. His visionary leadership and deep commitment to education left an indelible mark on AFS, inspiring students and faculty alike. Bruce’s legacy continues to influence our community, and we strive to honor his principles in our daily endeavors.

We are honored to receive a gift from his estate that will be used to further the mission of our school — to cultivate intellectual excellence, foster strength of character and support the growth of each student’s unique talents, while nurturing the physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing of the whole child.

Bruce’s vision continues to guide us as we seek truth, community and transformation every day.

THE FUND FOR AFS

is the keystone of the School’s operating budget, supporting every aspect of our campus and programs. From our experiential learning and global travel opportunities; sets, lighting and sound for our award-winning theatre productions; sports equipment and uniforms for our competitive Friends League teams; oil paints and materials for our talented arts students; and everything in between. The Fund for AFS also enables our exceptional tuition assistance program, which makes an AFS education affordable for more than half of our families.

The Fund for AFS runs on the School’s fisal year calendar, July 1 – June 30. Over the course of the 20242025 fisal year, more than 500 members of the AFS community demonstrated their commitment to keeping our School strong by making a gift to the Fund for AFS.
