Our Mission

AbilityFirst provides programs and services to help children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities realize their full potential throughout their lives.

Our Vision

At AbilityFirst our vision is of a society that values each individual and provides the opportunity for all people to lead full and productive lives.

Our Beginnings AbilityFirst was established in 1926 as the Crippled Children’s Society of Southern California.

A Letter from our Chair and CEO On August 16, 2013, we celebrated the long awaited Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new AbilityFirst Joan and Harry A. Mier Center. Since the 1970s, our programs in Inglewood had been spread among three 80-year-old buildings on one site at 8090 Crenshaw Boulevard. The new modern, fully-accessible 6,500-square-foot building will transform the delivery of services for more children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities. We offer our deepest gratitude and admiration to all the generous volunteers and donors who contributed to the AbilityFirst Capital Campaign for the Joan and Harry A. Mier Center.

J

oan and Harry A. Mier were just two of many philanthropic-minded Southern Californians whose generosity created a profound tradition of broad community support for AbilityFirst since our beginnings as the Crippled Children’s Society of Southern California in 1926. We are proud of our enduring legacy and look forward with enthusiasm toward an even brighter future as we break down more barriers for more people with disabilities.

In June, 2013, we announced the opening of the AbilityFirst Glendale Center and its afterschool enrichment program for 25 children, teens and young adults with developmental disabilities.

As at our seven other community centers throughout Southern California, our staff engage the participants with activities that nurture social, physical, cognitive and creative abilities while achieving individual goals that center around socialization, communication and life-skills.

Forty new individuals with developmental disabilities were placed into community jobs in 2012-13 bringing the total number of individuals now supported through AbilityFirst’s Employment Services to 192. An additional 256 participants received job training and wages in our three work centers.

Together we stand for, and alongside, individuals with disabilities and their families. Your contributions are vital to our success in fulfilling our mission and helping AbilityFirst to achieve its personal best.

Four years ago, our camp lost all State funding making it difficult and in some cases impossible for families to afford the cost of camp. Through the generosity of people like you, Camp Paivika is today at 70% of capacity and providing campers with life and social skills as well as the fun they cherish throughout the whole year. Equally important, according to our family survey, 91% of parents/caregivers feel better equipped to care for their camper because of the respite that camp provides.

AbilityFirst programs offer an environment of trust and mutual respect where participants, volunteers and staff feel supported to reach for their personal best. Thanks to your generous support, nearly 2,000 children, teens and adults with physical and developmental disabilities participated in AbilityFirst programs last year.
