A Lenten Letter
from Bishop +John Davies
Dear Friends, Another Lent has begun with its traditional challenge to remember that our discipleship can be made more real by being Good News to the needy. So I am, once again, asking you, as members of our Diocesan family, to support my annual Lent Appeal and, by doing so, to demonstrate the generosity and compassion which Jesus asks of us. Your support will show that our internal concerns and challenges don’t take priority over the Gospel imperative to be light and love for others. Once more four charities will benefit from the appeal. Details of these come with this letter and further details can be found on the internet. Since I launched my first Lent Appeal, various charities have benefited from total giving of about £100,000. A wonderful effort for which I thank you most warmly on behalf of all those who have benefited. All we raise does good work in the relief of the needs of others, so I hope that I can rely on you and your parishes to be prayerful, thoughtful and committed to doing something to raise funds for this year’s effort. As usual, I received several suggestions for charities thought suitable for support and so choosing was no easy task. Those finally selected are: RNLI Faith in Families The Little Princess Trust Open Door UK Further details of all four can be found on the various websites, and you may wish to invite representatives to come and speak about their work at Parish, Ministry Area or Deanery
gatherings. Many of you are now well experienced in devising either imaginative or traditional methods of raising money for the appeal. Many of you also simply set something aside as a personal discipline as Lent progresses. However you choose to proceed, I thank you in advance and I wish you well in your planning and in your efforts for others.
