07 | Maharajas Athenaeum

BRIEF.

Designing a separate post-graduation and research institute for Maharajas College, Ernakulam, linked to the mother campus through innovative means, for 22 post-graduate programs and 17 research courses, with an intake of 25 appilcants per course. This new institute will have multiple departments connected through innovative transitional spaces, creative planning of the built and unbuilt spaces, and other requirements such as administration, seminar halls, staff rooms, washrooms, services, etc. A total of 1000 occupants, inclusive of students, faculties and non-faculties are to be considered.

LOCATION.

MG road , Ernakulm, Kerala, India.

DESIGN.

Design focused on establishing positive interactions among academic, research, outreach, cultural, and operational activities through the integration of various functional units, providing a continuity within the blocks and the surroundings together with incorporation of these integration elements into the urban fabric through the creation of a central node.

KEY POINTS:

BRIEF.

Project’s goal was to thoroughly examine the urban fabric of Kochi’s Marine Drive Stretch. Marine drive is a 3km walkway stretch that exhibits the skyline of Kochi to mark an identity of the district developing as a ‘Metro city’ with lines of commercial shops and parks with the accessibility of various transportation means in and around, a significant commercial district with a wealth of development opportunities. The process aimed at find solutions for pressing contemporary issues by analysing a variety of design intervention possibilities, particularly those related to waterfront development and mobility rejuvenation.

LOCATION.

Marine Drive Stretch (Kochi) , Ernakulm, Kerala, India.

DESIGN.

On Foot Through The City Centre- “to transform the site into a pedestrian friendly and vibrant city core using inclusive and walkable street design principles, therefore enhancing the urban ecosystem.”

KEY POINTS:

• Introduction of Pedestrian-only streets prioritize people and are strategically selected streets in which pedestrian volume is high and vehicular traffic is restricted. These streets offer opportunities for diverse activities such as shopping or sitting, dining or dawdling, promenading or performing.

Ample spacial accomodation for mixed use networks

Arterial roads are redeveloped as safe pedestrian connections along with street scaping to enhance the character of the stretch and to create a walk experience for the users.

Green Spine through central part of site connect major character zones internally. Acts as a shared street with reduced vehicular circulation.

Articulated facades & Trees Gateway Treatments

Pinchpoints

Envisioning dedicated bus lanes and bus bays with unobstructed public transportation facilities and access at each junction connecting arterial roads.

Pedestrianising MG road along the length with vehicular access limited to one side and other side dedicated to pedestrian and public activities, implementing guidelines for pedestrian inclusive design at edges.

Strategies for limiting private vehicular entry at MG road includes:

Spiral-Connecting the old and the new Competetion: Node Pavilion Design Challenge

Spiral - reciprocates a dramatic showcase of progressive rise or fall, each responding to an upward stimulus provided by the previous one. Stressing on the philosophical approach we direct this rise and fall to connect with the life and go of the current living scenario. The advancement in technology and resources has led to a virtual mode of connection and happiness that is being more preferred leading to less social behavior and gatherings. This as we all know is leading to the loneliness of the senior citizens in the society as well as in the long run virtual mode of life would end making us self-centered.
