How Your Weight Affects Your Health America’s title as the “most overweight nation Calendar Of Events in the world” is not one that we wear proudly. Lots of people lose weight just so they can fit into smaller clothes and gain more self-esteem. Remembering Nevada While this is admirable, there are more reasons to lose weight than just for aesthetic reasons. A person who is overweight has increased chances of developing certain diseases and Happy Holidays disorders--more so than people with normal weight. Here are the top five common disorders in which obesity contributes:

6 Simply55+ August

2018

1. Heart and Vascular Disease People who are overweight often have a concentration of fat in the chest area. The heavier that they are, the more pressure that is put on their heart. The cardiac muscles have to work overtime in order to properly circulate blood in the body. This extra work can lead to several heart conditions, such as enlargement (myopathy), congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic heart pain (angina), and possible cardiac arrest. Overweight people are also most susceptible to high blood pressure. The extra pressure causes weakness in the blood vessels and hardening of the arteries. Studies show that these problems increase risks of aneurysms, blood clots and strokes. Too many people die prematurely in our country because of heart problems that were brought on by obesity.

2. Breathing Problems The lungs need ample room to expand and contract for proper breathing. Being overweight makes this process more difficult. People who are obese often have large deposits of fat in the chest Not That Old And Loving It!

tasks, such as walking up a flight of stairs. Another side effect of obesity is sleep apnea. Entertainment & Food Doctors who specialize in sleep disorders report that being overweight is a primary cause of snoring and sleep apnea. Since the body is being deprived of oxygen over a period of time, serious heart and respiratory problems can result. Doctors have to prescribe CPAP machines so apnea patients can breathe Financial correctly. When these people lose weight, they often stop having apnea episodes all together.

3. Diabetes (Type II)Auto Travel When people are overweight, the whole endocrine system has problems. It is not unusual to see obese people suffering from HomeThe Improvement & Lifestyle Type II diabetes. pancreas gets out of whack and does not produce Simply insulin in the Savers proper amounts necessary to metabolize sugar Feedback and starches. Diabetic patients have to closely monitor their blood sugar levels and often have to take insulin shots to regulate it. People who do not follow their doctors’ advice and watch their nutrition put themselves in Calendar Of Events danger of going blind, losing limbs, and having an early death. The good news is that many Type II diabetics who lose weight either reduce or eliminate their insulin therapy. Nevada Remembering

4. Arthritis Happy Holidays Our bones are tough and are meant to support our bodies for a lifetime. Unfortunately, extra weight puts more pressure on them and causes the joints to wear down quicker. Arthritis can set in and turn everyday activities such as walking into a miserable chore. The bones that 8 Simply55+ August

2018

are mostly affected are the hips, legs, and feet, which carry the brunt of the weight. Often, candidates for joint replacements have extra weight as a contributing factor. Since many overweight people do not get the exercise they need, the bones and cartilage become more rigid and arthritis develops. Losing just a few pounds can make walking and exercising a little easier. The more active that people are, the less likely they will be overweight. This greatly reduces the chances of developing certain types of arthritis.

5. Cancer While cancer does not discriminate what types of people it victimizes, there are certain cancers that are related to obesity. These include cancer in the colon, prostate, kidneys, uterus, and in the breasts (after menopause). One of the reasons could be that a lot of foods that cause extra weight gain can have carcinogenic ingredients. Losing weight may not be a complete shield for cancer, but it can certainly lower certain risks.

Not That Old And Loving It!

Losing weight is not an easy task. We often learn bad eating habits from an early age and continue them into adulthood. Not only do we suffer physically when we are overweight, but we also suffer mentally. There are proven links between obesity and mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. It is good to know that we do not have to look forward to such a grim future. Those who lose as little as 10-15 pounds can greatly reduce their chances of heart disease and stroke. They also see benefits such as reduced cholesterol and blood pressure. People can make a big difference in making gradual steps toward losing weight and gaining a healthier life style. We can live happier and more productive lives. +

One Year After Delivering VA Accountability, Home Improvement & Lifestyle Our Fight Simply Continues Savers Feedback By U.S. Senator Dean Heller

f Events Nearly a year ago, President Trump signed into

law sweeping legislation to bring accountability Calendar Of Events to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The law – called the VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act – is designed to hold bad-acting employees responsible for Remembering Nevada their actions and provide necessary protections for whistleblowers who come forward with allegations of misconduct.

Happy Holidays

Together with my colleagues on the U.S. Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I was proud to help shepherd the historic legislation into law, which will have an impact on all VA hospitals in the U.S., including our state’s VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System and VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System, and help deliver better care to our veterans. Among key provisions, the law gives the secretary of the VA the authority to expedite the removal of a bad employee swiftly and ensures an individual removed from the VA is not kept on the VA’s payroll while appealing that decision. This is particularly important as before our bill became law, bureaucratic red tape stopped the VA from taking these common sense steps to hold substandard workers accountable.

10 Simply55+ August

2018

But while last year’s law is commendable, and represents a major breakthrough from how the VA previously operated, there’s more work to do. That’s why I’m urging Congress to pass my legislation that prevents the VA from hiding medical mistakes made by medical providers. The VA Provider Accountability Act, a bill I introduced with Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), requires the VA to report major adverse actions to the National Practitioner Data Bank and state licensing boards. It will also prohibit the VA from signing settlements with fired or dismissed VA employees that allow the VA to conceal serious medical errors or purge negative records from personnel files. After defending our country, Nevada’s veterans shouldn’t be forced to battle through poor service from the government agency tasked with caring for them. As the son of a veteran who receives care from the VA in Reno, NV, I have, and always will, make sure that VA delivers on its promise “to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan.” Not That Old And Loving It!

Earlier this summer, our nation paused to recognize Memorial Day, a time when we remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our individual freedoms. But with roughly 20 veterans dying by suicide every day, and thousands of veterans living on the streets each night, we must honor the troops who gave all by standing alongside those who are still with us each and every day. I’m honored to represent Nevada’s 300,000 military veterans, and carry their fight in Washington to deliver policies that give them the benefits, care and support that they’ve earned and deserve. Since the start of 2017, the President has signed into law 14 pieces of legislation that I authored or helped introduce to help our state’s military Not That Old And Loving It!

heroes. This includes my Veteran Urgent Access to Mental Healthcare Act, which provides mental health services to veterans who received an ‘other-than-honorable’ discharge, and my Guard and Reservists Education Improvement Act, a measure that aims to increase G.I. bill payments for Guardsmen and Reservists. Rest assured, I’m not finished yet. Fighting for our state’s heroes has been, and will remain, my top priority in the United States Senate, and I will continue to use my voice and legislate their concerns. As always, if you are a veteran residing in Nevada and in need of assistance, my office is here to help. Simply visit my website at www.heller.senate.gov and submit a casework request, or call my Las Vegas office at 702-3886605 and my Reno office at 775-686-5770 where a member of my staff can assist you. + August 2018

Top Ten Dangers to Your Dog During the Summer

Calendar Of Events

Remembering Nevada

Happy Holidays

Summer opens up a lot of things for dog owners to do. However, responsible dog owners should be aware of the dangers that the season can bring to their pets.

1. Sunburn

Dogs can get sunburned, just like people. Light-colored dogs and dogs with thin fur are at high risk of sunburn. If your dog likes to stay outside, make sure that you give them a healthy application of sunscreen. If you can’t find sunscreen that’s formulated for dogs, you can opt to use one that is formulated for babies.

2. Heat Stroke

Heat stroke occurs if your pet’s body temperature gets too high. Keep an eye out for this condition if your dog is hyperactive in the heat. Make sure that they’ve got some shade to play in if they want to stay outside. Needless to say, you must also avoid leaving your dog in the car. A cracked window will not provide enough ventilation to cool the car’s interior.

20 Simply55+ August

2018

3. Barbecues

Dogs are man’s best friend, but even a welltrained dog may go after unattended food. Food on the barbecue, for example, might look particularly appetizing to a hungry dog. Retrieving food from a dog can be an incredible task, especially if they think that you’re trying to play with them. Even after you’re done cooking, a dog might decide that any meat on the barbecue is worth going after, which is dangerous if you used lighter fluid. It is generally best to keep dogs away from barbecues, unless you keep them on a short leash.

4. Chlorine

While swimming can be both fun and healthy for the dog, you need to make sure that you wash your dog after it goes in the pool. Chlorine is a skin irritant and can upset their stomach. If it looks like your dog’s drinking a lot from the pool, take it out of the water.

Not That Old And Loving It!

5. Hot Streets

Patios, streets, sand, and sidewalks, can all hurt your dog’s feet. During the summer, it is recommended that you walk them early in the morning or at night, when these surfaces are cool. If you’re not sure whether it’s safe or not, press your palm against the floor for thirty seconds. If it hurts you, it will hurt your dog.

6. Dehydration

Dehydration can be easily prevented by making sure that your dog has easy access to cool water, both inside and outside your house. Wet dog food, ice cubes, and beef broth can all help keep your dog hydrated.

7. Fireworks

Fireworks are dangerous to dogs in a number ways. Many fireworks either look like or are attached to sticks, which might convince a curious dog to pick one up and play with it. Fireworks going off can startle and leave your dog anxious and afraid. It’s generally a good idea to keep your dogs away from fireworks. If they have to be in the area, keep them on a short leash.

8. Getting Lost

Taking your dog on long trips may result in many fond memories, but it can also result in them getting lost in unfamiliar territory. If

Not That Old And Loving It!

your dog is off leash, make sure that someone has an eye on it at all times. Your dog should also have a collar with your contact information to maximize the odds of recovery should the worst happen.

9. Allergies

Summer is full of allergens, including flowers, fleas, and mold. These can all cause itchiness, discomfort, sneezing, and coughing. Keep an eye out for these allergens and make sure that your dog stays away from them. Consult your veterinarian and ask if you need to have antihistamines or medication on hand.

10. Parasitic Infestations

Mosquitoes, flies, ticks, and other insects can infest your home and your dog during the summer months. Your veterinarian should be able to recommend protection appropriate to your dog and your situation. While these concerns are not exclusive to summertime, their dangerous are heightened during the season. You should also consider your dog’s behavior. If your dog likes to stay indoors, you won’t have to worry about any problems with hot sidewalks. Don’t be afraid to let your dog have fun, but it is only responsible to stay aware of what dangerous are present. +

Beat The Heat! Feedback

Calendar Of Events

Keep Cool While Enjoying Calendar Of Events These Summer Activities!

Summer is a great time to takeRemembering a step back, spend time with family and friends and enjoy Nevada some leisure time. But the scorching heat of summer can make some activities unbearable. If you don’t want to sweat your way through the season, make sure to plan ahead and choose activities that help you beat the heat. Here are our twelve favorite summertime activities that Happy Holidays are tons of fun but will also keep you cool.

Pack A Picnic Nothing says summer like a picnic. Grab yourself a blanket, some pillows and a basket with lunch. Set up your picnic site under a large shade tree, beside the lake or ocean where there’s a constant breeze or even right in the middle of the living room with the A/C on full blast. Just sitting down to lunch in a different setting makes it fun.

Check Out A Matinee Instead of spending the hottest part of the day outside, go to the movies. You’ll stay cool in the dim, dark theatre, plus you’ll also beat the crowds and save some money on tickets to the latest summer blockbuster.

Go Ice Skating Want to truly beat the heat? Go ice skating. Indoor ice arenas are open year round, and while you might get chilly in the frigid arena

22 Simply55+ August

2018

in the wintertime, it’ll feel perfectly frosty in the middle of summer.

Make A Frozen Treat You definitely don’t want to turn on the oven in the middle of a summer day to bake, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a sweet treat. Make your own ice pops out of fresh fruit and juice, chocolate covered frozen bananas or homemade ice cream sandwiches. These sinfully sweet snacks are cool and delicious, and they won’t heat up the house.

Enjoy A Wine Tasting Need a little adult time? Go wine tasting. Local wineries feature cozy air conditioned tasting rooms and all the wine samples your heart desires. Just be sure to drink a glass of water between each sample, or you might not feel so wonderful when you step back into the heat of the day. Not That Old And Loving It!

Explore Local Museums

Take A Sunrise/Sunset Hike

Keep cool and learn something interesting by visiting a local museum this summer. Museums are a great place to cool down the body and heat up the mind. They’re also a great place to take kids. You don’t want everything they learned this year in school to be completely forgotten, do you?

Hiking might seem like a strenuous activity better suited for spring or fall, but hiking during dawn and dusk keeps temperatures low and comfortable. The faint, soft light also makes everything around you glow in new and unexpected ways.

Start A Pool Volleyball League

Gaze Into the Stars

It may be too hot to play beach volleyball in the blazing hot sand and blaring sun, but it’s never too hot to play pool volleyball. Grab a floating net at the local toy store and invite over a few friends. The water will keep you cool while you play. Just don’t forget the waterproof sunscreen.

Take advantage of dropping nighttime temperatures by going on a stargazing adventure. Pack a telescope, a blanket and pillows and set off away from the lights of the city. Bring a star chart or pull up a map of the skies on your phone and compare what you see with what’s shining bright where you are.

Bowl A Strike

Pack Your Bags

On blistering hot days, swing by the bowling alley for some good old fashioned fun. It doesn’t matter if you’re good at bowling; in fact, sometimes it’s more fun if you’re awful. You’ll be laughing your head off at the gutter balls you throw in no time.

Even if you haven’t planned the perfect summer vacation, there’s still time to get away on a short cruise or staycation. Head to the shore where winds from the ocean keep everything a few degrees cooler. Or better yet, book a cruise and take in the sights from the balcony of your crisp, cool cabin.

Play The Slots Casinos are the perfect cool zone to spend the day (and quite a bit of your money if you’re not careful). Enjoy the day playing penny slots, table games and betting the sports book in the perfectly cooled, perfectly filtered casino air. And if you get sick of being inside, you can always try to sneak into the resort’s pool and spa area.

Not That Old And Loving It!

Yes it’s hot outside during the summer months, but you can stay cool and still have a great time with just a little bit of creativity and planning. This summer, don’t just sit at home cooking on the couch. Gather up your friends and family, get out and enjoy this special time of year. +
