Since Covid restrictions were lifted at the end of April, gym usage and membership base has went through the roof in Northern Ireland, especially for those high achieving gyms who attended the very first awards held since the pandemic – The NI B-Fit Awards 2022. We catch up with a few of the top PT’s and Gym owners in the business and give you the low down on just what kept them going throughout the pandemic and how they continue to go from strength to strength!

Welcome to the first issue of NI B-FIT! And, what an issue we have in store for you.... This first issue celebrates the gym innovators and their relentless need to ensure success with coverage on the NI B-Fit Awards 2022.

Fitness changed my life. The issue that left me in a wheelchair the rehab from my specialist was weightlifting, can you imagine? You’ve been house bound, can only walk or stand for three min utes and they say you can weightlift to make you better? I was over the moon! The day I met the specialist something in my mindset switched and I refused to be pushed in the chair again, I wasn’t strong enough to push myself so I pushed the chair for 3 mins, sat down and got up and repeated that to do my shopping, walk my dogs and most importantly into the gym. I deadlifted and when I finished my set I sat in my chair and then got up and did it all over again. I still couldn’t walk longer than 3 mins though.

Imagine the many people we could help by spreading this message? We have waiting lists for chronic health conditions at 330,000 here in Northwrn Ireland. Imagine how many of those people could be helped by doing what I’ve done what you do with your clients.

The pain was excruciating but my back wasn’t giving out. I now had an opportuni ty, an opportunity to change my life, to take

is the greatest form of self love.

I fought to get out of my wheelchair, I fought through my trauma, my weight was not go ing to take me down.

Renowned transformational Life Coach, Rebecca Browne has faced dark times and dehabilitating health challenges. She takes time out of her busy schedule to tell B-Fit Magazine readers her story so far, and what led her to motivational speaking and her rapid growth to becoming one of the most inspiring women of our age..... In her own words - RISE WITH REB!

FROM WHEELCHAIR TO WALKING....

I changed my mindset and my habits

Even with the odds stacked against me, I have lost 65lbs and counting, I have changed my life. All of this has come down to health and fitness.

So where am I now? I am inde pendent. By day I work for a company Access Able who im prove accessibility around the UK and N.I for 4 million disabled people and carers, by night I’m a mindset coach where I help people over come the mental obstacles or trauma that is keeping them from the life they want, and I’m a speaker, travelling to different gyms and events to motivate and inspire people to take back control of their health.

My story is proof of what we can do when we refuse to accept failure, when we keep getting up every time we’re knocked down, if you’re struggling please don’t give up because you could be almost at that break through like i was and you just dont know it.

I waited 5 and and half years for my time on that list and in that time I have become pain free, all because of weightlifting. Fitness really can change your life.

back control to regain my independence and to do it I had to get real with myself and look in the mirror. I had gotten to 300lbs. I wasn’t in pain now because of my injury I was in pain because I allowed myself to get to this

Had you told me when I was 22, newly recovered from an eating disorder and told me would I have a chronic illness that will only deteriorate, that I would be stood up here in a fancy dress in front of all of you PAIN FREE I wouldn’t have believed you.

So I went to a physio, who tried a few things and the next day I tried to walk longer the 3 mins the day after, nothing happened, I tried to walk the next day longer than 3 mins and no change and the third day I tried to walk to get than 3 minutes and 3 minutes passed and I was walking, 5 mins passed and I was still walking, 10 min then 15 , I was walking around my house for 1 hour not stopping calling everyone I knew.

“It’s hard to believe there is still such a stigma around something as common as mental ill health or addiction problems. When I was struggling with my own mental health everything changed for the better the day I asked for support. The ASK: LISTEN: TALK message may sound simple but it takes real strength to admit when you need support – it’s not easy but, as I know myself, it’s absolutely worth it.”

At Inspire we are all too aware of current mental health problems being faced by people, families and communities and by sharing this message today Brian and Domhnall are reminding us there is hope, there is support and there is recovery.

At a training session in Magee’s Belfast gym based in Blackstaff Way just of the M1, Magee Health and Fitness,  the two leading sportsmen highlighted the role that physical exercise and sport can play in boosting mental health by increasing social interaction and selfesteem.

Alex Bunting, Director of Mental Health and Addiction Services from Inspire said; “We are delighted that Brian and Domhnall have got together to support our Change Your Mind anti-stigma ASK:LISTEN:TALK message. The message from these two leading sports figures couldn’t be clearer –looking after your own mental wellbeing and taking care of those around you is nothing to be ashamed of.

It’s a powerful message and it’s a perfect way to end Mental Health Awareness Week.”

Brain Magee, owner of Magee Health and Fitness said; “In and out of the ring my career has been about physical strength and agility and mental wellbeing and resilience are just as important. My message is clear, mental health and physical health go hand-in-hand and no one should be ashamed to ask for help if they are struggling or worried about someone else. I would encourage everyone, especially any young men out there who are might be embarrassed to talk about their feelings to take that first step.”

When I was young, I was always known as the chubby one in the house, with 2 amazing and very competitive brothers, we all pushed one another to do better! As a result I worked my way out of that, wanting to have a better quality of life pushed me to work really hard as a boxer. I ended up winning 7 Ulster titles and 2 Irish titles and represented my country many times. Due to such positive changes in my life, I continually wanted to move forward.

I went to tech and decided to drop out and became a personal trainer for many a year before mov ing to Australia. Helping people realise their own potential, not only on fitness ability but also on a mental health level, made me realise how good fitness is - not just for your body, but for your mind. It altogether helps build confidence. I’m a mental health advocate and enjoy looking after my PT’s at The Gym, ensuring they give our members the best they can give!

Best Equipped Gym in the country, open 24 hour, Free Parking & WiFi. Since the relaunch of our newly refurbished gym we extended it to 10,500 sq ft of sheer quality equipment and facilities for all levels of fitness

I opened my business with just £200 saving and now in equipment alone I would say it’s a high 6 figure sum.

This has now led to The GYM Newry 24 Hour, opened only 4 years ago becoming the perfect for mula for gyms and the way we feel it should be everywhere.

I always feel any business can improve, if you’re not always looking to improve, in this forever developing fitness industry, I feel you will be left behind.

What led Declan onto wanting to become the best at what he does?

10 NI B-FIT

Can you imagine the delight Declan Trainor and his team of fitness professionals felt when the top gym in Northern Ireland was being announced at the recent NI B-Fit Awards held at Belfast’s prestigious Europa Hotel? Not only had The Gym 24, and still enjoy since that night in June 2022!

The Gym 24 Hour, Newry Unit 3, 52 Armagh Road, Newry. BT35 M: 07841 641000

Firstly, what’s on offer for clients/members at The Gym, Newry?

We met up with The Gym 24 Hour, Newry proprietor Declan Trainor to find out just what has hap pened in the few weeks since his win and what drove him to the ultimate challenge enabling him to gain the title of Northern Ireland’s top gym!

Yes, I am very happy with our growth and progress, the journey and challenges along the way is what gets me excited and I always love to overcome even the biggest of challenges.

And the Overall Winner of the B-Fit Award for the Best Gym in NI is….. The Gym 24 Hour, Newry!

Do you feel happy today about your growth or do you still feel that you can do better?

No, as long as you’re working out, de-stressing, focusing on you, making yourself a better version of what you were yesterday, you do you and pick a time that suits. We are all different, some people work 9-5, some looking after their kids or have other commitments, as long as you’re enjoying what your doing, hats off and keep going!

How is Your Gym different from your compet itors and do you have any plans to start gyms in other cities in the country over the next 5 years?

Post Covid-19, how have you handled the crisis and the crowd at your gym? Any special measures you have taken for your members? Was waiting for something relating to this, if you don’t know already I was the guy who kept his gym open all through ‘Lockdown’. At that time if you remember it was the last thing anyone had to hold onto in the attempt to support their physical and mental health. I had got many messages from members of the gym saying if it closes they would find it difficult to survive!

Fitness Awards

I first launched myself in 2010 in Warrenpoint with £200 in my pocket, the smallest little room about 200 sq ft as a pt studio which started off with just great community and knowledge as we didn’t have the income to buy massive pieces of gym equipment. As I said, the push to improve to be the best at what I do is what’s led to the most amazing things in our newly relaunched facility.

. The best fitted out gym in the country with everything people can dream about and more from calibrated plates, A Watson Tru Squat and the Heaviest Dumbbells in the country 3-100kg

I would not have my members blood on my hands and after carefully calculating the risks and asking Michael Mcbride was there any cases in Gyms in Northern Ireland, which there wasn’t, so I made the decision to keep my gym open as I felt more lives would be saved by gyms being open to look after our physical and mental health. Our facility being 10500 sq ft had more than enough room and space to keep people safely within the Allprotocols.products were provided for members for cleaning down machines after use, which we do normally anyway in the facility so no major changes.

I have the most amazing staff… We had to redesign the entire gym and the team put in so much effort. They stayed extra hours to complete the task to hand with me. Wouldn’t leave until all that needed to be completed was finished. Prove their passion and drive to become the best at what we all do together. Such a dedicated team, passionate beyond compare. Needless to say, as a result the relaunch came out even better than expected. So much so, we are hoping to launch a new gym in Belfast in the very near future!

Is there any ideal time that you would suggest for doing workouts at the gym?

What are the big challenges that you are fac ing today in operating your gyms?

Can you tell us about winning any awards in the past and what that entailed?

I do personally only recommend supplements if you’re lacking in something. A protein shake is handy after training but I feel food is always better if you have the time!

. 24 hour access

Do you suggest any food supplements for your gym members?

When did you first launch your own gym and what are the facilities that you offer for mem bers today?

Declan Trainor’s accolades to date include:

. 7 ulster titles

It’s different because we think about the people, ask questions, take constructive criticism and always have solutions to any problem or request a member would make. We always reinvest in the facility, bringing it to the next level.

. Fitness manager of the Year x 2

How are you engaging with your gym mem bers and what steps do you take for keeping them entertained and at the same time as being serious about their fitness goals at the gym?

We actually run in house events like powerlifting and we have established a great community at The Gym. We recently put up an events board with yearly events for our members who may want to participate.

Exciting stuff coming from Declan and we at B-Fit Magazine really wish him and his wonderful team every success as NI’s Top Award Winning Gym for the future….

Over 340 fitness industry leaders showed up in top glamour to the event most of them being treated to a VIP Spray Tan courtesy of RBF Tan.

This year’s high calibre judges were, Miss Universe Ireland - Katharine Walker, Belfast Boxer - Tyrone Mckenna, IBO Continental Super Middle Heavyweight - Nathan Heaney, Former World Boxing Champion - Brian Magee, and special guest of the night Mr Calum Best.

“Sadly, though, there can only be one winner in each NI B-Fit Awards 2022 category, so we had to make some tough decisions. In all cases, we are confident that our chosen judges, all from different fitness backgrounds, were thorough in scoring and thus selecting the overall winners in each category,” added Andrew Benson.

Taking time out from his intense schedule, Darren said, “It’s really great to be acknowledged for what you do. The amount of support I have seen on social media via likes and contact for classes really does mean a lot.”

Further to being Highly Commended at the first annual NI B-Fit Awards, Darren Tweedie of DT Fitness was delighted to become the recipient of the coveted B-Fit Award for the Best Personal Trainer in County Down....

We had to ask Darren as a winner of this coveted award if he had any plans for expansion to which he explained, “No expansion plans, thankfully we’re at capacity and enjoying offering the best classes to suit our clientele. The one thing we may do without upsetting new members is change classes that don’t work so all can avail more of what is used consistently. DT Fitness is not just a job, it’s what I love and have been doing and progressing at for over 13 years.”

I start at 5.30am and finish at 9.30pm. If you like sleep then this is not the job for you! Positive mental attitude is a must as going to the gym is not always just about exercise, it’s a therapy session as well.” Great tip Darren, can’t wait to try out your classes as it’s surely the way forward for anyone who wants to get into shape both mentally and physically!

24 NI B-FIT B-Fit Interview HydeAway Gym

Further to Gary’s coveted title at the 2022 B-Fit Awards, he’s no stranger to accolades as he has won also won many titles through competing at a high level, giving him the high standards his members expect.

It’s been a tough couple of years due to Covid, especially for gyms who were closed to the public for quite a time. We managed to catch up with proprietor Gary Hyde from The Hydeaway Gym in Armagh. Renowned for his training equipment, suited for all levels in fitness and now award winner for the best gym in the county at the recent B-Fit Awards. Gary’s dedication to the industry has proven him to be not only a risk taker, but an innovator who over the last 10 years has created a space his members can call home.

Based on his own background of training, he combines his experience with nutrition and gives his clients the most favourable plans to suit their requirements. Gary checks in with his clients at regular intervals and guides them through their diet and training, adapted to each individual.

Prompted by his great work ethic as a farmer originally, Gary went onto become a personal trainer at the gym in 2011 winning body building competitions - one every year for the last ten years! This convinced him to turn professional in 2019 and his stance to becoming the best at what his gym offers stemmed from that. From fitness competitions to The Hydeaway Gym, Gary is no stranger to fitness.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Gary and his team on their award, The B-Fit Award for the Best Gym in Armagh.

“Thecommunity.Hydeaway Gym use to be very male orientated upon concept, but over the months we changed due to high demand and make changes with our profits accordingly. We now offer trampolines, and add every year to the gym, keeping it fresh. We even did a room up like a nightclub, so our clients enjoy the drive to personal success.”

Is there any plans for expansion? Gary said, “We would like to venture in the future into Belfast. We’re always branding, there’s a lot of people doing it, and now with this huge award from B-Fit our proper wee Hydeaway is en route to even more success.

It had been in planning for 6 months previous and from day one the support has been phenomenal. In the six months since our numbers have grown week on week and every day in here is incredible, I just love being in the gym, and we try to make our members feel the same. It’s a weights based gym, with a large cardio section, full from wall to wall with brand new, top notch equipment designed and manufactured to suit our gym

My journey in fitness only began in 2018 at the age of 38. I was heading for 40, but also for 400lbs and had to do something before it was too late.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST LAUNCH YOUR OWN GYM AND WHAT ARE THE FACILITIES THAT YOU OFFER FOR MEMBERS TODAY?

We launched our gym in oct 2021 just after the lockdowns we’re lifted.

I’m sure everyone says their gym is different, but with ours we really do believe it.

EMPIRE GYM

DO YOU FEEL HAPPY TODAY ABOUT YOUR GROWTH OR DO YOU STILL FEEL THAT YOU CAN DO BETTER?

I’ll always strive for more, yes I’m happy, I’m in a place doing a job I never imagined I could be, but I can always learn more, improve, if you sit still in this industry you’ll fall behind, always strive for more.

Just six months, but after going from strength to strength plans for empire gym 2 are already in the pipeline

POST COVID-19, HOW HAVE YOU HANDLED THE CRISIS AND THE CROWD AT YOUR GYM? ANY SPECIAL MEASURES YOU HAVE TAKEN FOR YOUR MEMBERS?

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY IN FITNESS AND WHAT MADE YOU TAKE UP FITNESS AS YOUR PROFESSION?

Luckily we opened post covid so didn’t have the problems that many others have had, but on a personal level as a trainer, right throughout lockdowns I provided free zoom workouts three times a week for all my clients, and provided them all with free home plans etc to follow, to help keep them occupied and more importantly focussed, and I believe it helped massively with my client retention when it came to reopening

We’ve worked really hard to create a real community in our gym, everyone knows everyone, the atmosphere and buzz all day every day just drives you on and makes you want to come back. We’ve a brilliant team of staff, and when your staff are happy and love your job, that spreads through the whole place.

CAN YOU TELL US FOR HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN OPERATING YOUR GYM?

Aaron, my now business partner and friend, took on the job as my pt, and I’m 11 months we’d dropped 140lbs and I’d caught the big for the gym, and from there on I knew that what I wanted to do was help other people experience what I had.

HOW IS YOUR GYM DIFFERENT FROM YOUR COMPETITORS AND DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO START GYMS IN OTHER CITIES IN THE COUNTRY OVER THE NEXT 5 YEARS?

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT WINNING ANY AWARDS IN THE PAST AND WHAT THAT ENTAILED?

28 NI B-FIT

I haven’t won any yet but have been nominated for your awards this may so well see how that goes

HOW ARE YOU ENGAGING WITH YOUR GYM MEMBERS AND WHAT STEPS DO YOU TAKE FOR KEEPING THEM ENTERTAINED AND AT THE SAME TIME SERIOUS ABOUT THEIR FITNESS GOALS AT THE GYM?

We’re also very female orientated for a weights based training facility, in fact approx 50% of our members are female, and we love Wethat.have plans for the future, but our immediate concern is the establishment and security of this one, then I guess we’ll see from there

IS THERE ANY IDEAL TIME THAT YOU WOULD SUGGEST FOR DOING WORKOUTS AT THE GYM?

We sponsor athletes within the gym, in fact our two sponsored athletes have just been crowned champions in their category at PCA Ireland so we’re delighted for We’vethat. also got a group from the gym attending the rampage obstacle course at the jungle this Weweek.appreciate everyone that comes through our door, and we do all we can to make sure they know that

It has to be the cost of services like electricity, supplements etc. everything is going up in price, but we try to keep it all as affordable as we can, other than things like that, we can’t complain

In my opinions supplements are useful as exactly that, used alongside a healthy diet and good water intake they are great, but also an added cost, so don’t get too caught up in all the trends, speak to your coach and see what they recommend, it’s their job to keep you on track, they’ll be more than willing to help

WHAT ARE THE BIG CHALLENGES THAT YOU ARE FACING TODAY IN OPERATING YOUR GYMS?

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SUGGEST ANY FOOD SUPPLEMENTS OR TIPS FOR THE BENEFIT OF OUR READERS?

In an ideal world I like to train in the morning, it just sets me up for the day, but with working as a coach we usually train now between our morning and evening clients. People have busy lives, as long as they’re finding the time for their health and fitness among all the madness of everything else, then they’re doing ok

We have a supplement shop in the gym also which again has been a massive success from we opened

APART FROM THE GYM, DO YOUR MEMBERS GET EXTRA FACILITIES TO USE AT THE GYM?

My fitness journey had a bit of a dark start, when I was in my early 20s I suffered with poor mental health, a combination of alcohol, drugs and toxic relationships . I let myself become overweight.. this then added zero confidence and no self-esteem. I couldn’t deal with it and one day tried something unthinkable. . . I seeked help from my gp she then sent me to counselling. They give me medication that made me worse so I had to find another way to keep my mind busy . I always did so some weight training so a threw all my energy into that ... a year later I was in great shape mentally and physically coaching myself ... I then decided I wanted to help others who were in the same position as me and my friends encouraged me to become a trainer . Best choice I ever made

I’ll always thrive for more .. im happy that my personal training business has been busy this 10 years . Also very happy to be an owner of a gym .. I also have a strong online presence. Be easier if there were 3 of me .

CAN YOU TELL US FOR HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN OPERATING YOUR GYM?

WHEN DID YOU FIRST LAUNCH YOUR OWN GYM AND WHAT ARE THE FACILITIES THAT YOU OFFER FOR MEMBERS TODAY?

I’m confident in all my work . My main goal now is to keep our customers happy . Which I think we do very well .

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY IN FITNESS AND WHAT MADE YOU TAKE UP FITNESS AS YOUR PROFESSION?

So we only launched last October , and we threw this together in a short period of time . We offer brand new gym equipment , machines and free weights to suit most styles of training and we have a great cardio section also . In the gym we also have a supplement store.

DO YOU FEEL HAPPY TODAY ABOUT YOUR GROWTH OR DO YOU STILL FEEL THAT YOU CAN DO BETTER?

POST COVID-19, HOW HAVE YOU HANDLED THE CRISIS AND THE CROWD AT YOUR GYM? ANY SPECIAL MEASURES YOU HAVE TAKEN FOR YOUR MEMBERS?

I have a few bodybuilding awards

Bodybuilding has been my savior my distraction from the life I had . Its also give me attributes to being a good coach and business owner

About 7 months

Currently working towards competing in 2023

We opened after the main crisis , we Just make sure the gym is as clean as possible, we have all the sanitising materials required

HOW ARE YOU ENGAGING WITH YOUR GYM MEMBERS AND WHAT STEPS DO YOU TAKE FOR KEEPING THEM ENTERTAINED AND AT THE SAME TIME SERIOUS ABOUT THEIR FITNESS GOALS AT THE GYM?

WHAT ARE THE BIG CHALLENGES THAT YOU ARE FACING TODAY IN OPERATING YOUR GYMS?

HOW IS YOUR GYM DIFFERENT FROM YOUR COMPETITORS AND DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO START GYMS IN OTHER CITIES IN THE COUNTRY OVER THE NEXT 5 YEARS?

Just the supplement shop . With competitive online prices ... PT clients get discounts

IS THERE ANY IDEAL TIME THAT YOU WOULD SUGGEST FOR DOING WORKOUTS AT THE GYM?

Working around gyms here and abroad I notice most gyms lack something.. some gyms are clean tidy and presentable but lack equipment or some gyms are rough around the edges but have every thing you need. We wanted our gym to be both... eye catching and functional.. and we nailed that look . We do have plans in the pipeline for gym 2 and maybe 3 over the next 5 years

We have a great community in the gym . Geoff and I get on like a married couple we are told. Always having banter. We are very laid back and very approachable. We would do anything for our staff.

APART FROM THE GYM, DO YOUR MEMBERS GET EXTRA FACILITIES TO USE AT THE GYM?

Everyone’s day is different... personally I like to train in the afternoon. Mornings have a nice wee crowd. I can’t do the evenings as it too busy . But some people live for the social aspect too

Just the price of living. Everything goes up . Electric has took a hike. We have to be mindful of use . Also supplements are going up in price. And brexit situation makes it difficult for shipping .
