WORDS BY JESS WILSON
BY THE SEA

A COLLECTION OF UNIQUE TRADITIONS THAT MAKE AN ABERSOCH CHRISTMAS FEEL TRULY SPECIAL.
WHETHER IT’S YOUR FIFTIETH FESTIVE SEASON ON THE LLŶ N PENINSULA OR YOUR VERY FIRST, WHY NOT START A NEW CHRISTMAS TRADITION? THE HOLIDAYS DON’T HAVE TO BE SPENT IN CROWDED SHOPPING CENTRES OR IN FRONT OF THE TV—BRING A TOUCH OF ABERSOCH MAGIC TO YOUR CELEBRATIONS AND MAKE TIME FOR THE THINGS YOU LOVE MOST. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPES, SAVOUR SIMPLE JOYS, AND ENJOY QUALITY MOMENTS WITH LOVED ONES ON THE LLŶ N PENINSULA THIS CHRISTMAS.
WINTER IN THE WATER
Why not brave the icy tides for a winter dip. Pull on your

woolly hat and take to the shores with friends and family for an invigorating morning activity. On a clear, crisp day, you can catch the sunrise across Cardigan Bay and see the coastline bathed in amber light. Even if you just enter the water for a few seconds (being sure to regulate your breathing) you will feel the refreshing sensation of a winter dip.
GET OUT ON THE OCEAN
Who said water sports were only for summer? Those calm, glassy days when the sea is a wobbling reflection of a cloudless sky invite you out beyond the shore. If you are confident on a paddleboard, wrap up warm with a thick wetsuit and dryrobe at the ready and head out for a gentle paddle. Winter brings its own serene stillness; the sea is bare without its moorings and silent without any powerboats zipping around. Escape from the madness

of the festive season for an hour or two, with only the gentle lapping sounds of the shore and the seagulls for company.
COASTAL CHRISTMAS ADVENTURES
If you are spending the festive season on the Llŷ n Peninsula with family or friends, you could explore the winding tracks of the peninsula. The Llŷ n Coastal Path offers a breathtaking circular route of the peninsula’s coastline, why not try a stretch that you have not visited before?
Also, the winter roads are likely to be much quieter than in peak season, making cycling a relaxing experience. Take the paths that run parallel to Porth Niegwl and wind up over Rhiw hill. Up on the heights of the headland, you can take in panoramic views of the peninsula, the rolling fields, quaint towns and vast oceans beyond. Especially early morning, when the rolling fields are coasted in dew and the sky clears into a crisp

blue, you can see beyond out to the snow-capped peaks of Eryri.
Catch a breath of fresh air out on the wild paths, and experience beauty and stillness, a perfect time to reflect on the warm feelings of Christmas. Why not call in at a cafe for a rewarding hot drink and festive treat? Two Islands have a range of
tasty pastries and cakes perfect for the winter season, or a festive hot chocolate, piled with cream, marshmallows and chocolatey treats.
TAKE TIME FOR WELLNESS
If you are feeling the need to unwind at this time of year, and spend some time inside your own mind without distractions, why not introduce a spa treatment as a new tradition? Either with your friends, family, or partner, spa and wellness treatments are an amazing way to bring some inner peace and gratitude to your mind this festive season. With a range of wellness offerings, you are sure to find something perfect for you. From the beach sauna at @porthpoeth or a spa day and massage treatment at the Warren Spa, or even a yoga session and sound bath, the peninsula has lots to offer. This could be the perfect tradition to bring some comfort and peace to your festive break.

FIRESIDE EVENINGS
Picture a cosy cottage, filled with warm amber light from a cosy fire and shadows of flames flickering across the walls: a perfect Christmas scene. Now, make it Abersoch style … Why not wrap up warm and take the festive firelit atmosphere down onto the shores! Choose a dry evening and find a perfect (and safe) spot for your beach campfire. Enjoy Christmas music and toast marshmallows in the warm company of family and friends.
While enjoying the peaceful outdoor evenings, take a moment to admire the Llŷ n’s incredible star-filled skies. Sparkling like a celestial tapestry, there’s truly no better place for stargazing. See how many constellations you can spot and let the stillness of the night add a touch of magic to your Christmas. It’s a simple, enchanting activity that feels truly unforgettable.
HIT THE TOWN!
Dress up in your winter glam and head out for a festive night in the village. With cosy fires, familiar laughter, and the welcoming glow of your favourite venues, an evening

in Abersoch is always something special. Whether you’re relaxing in Zinc’s warm conservatory with your favourite tunes playing, or enjoying a classy cocktail night at Après Sea or SOCH, an Abersoch night out never disappoints. Be sure to keep an eye on social media for live music and special festive performances.
BEACH CHRISTMAS CRAFTS
No matter how old you are, Christmas crafts are a great way to get into the festive spirit. Why not set aside some time to enjoy making Christmas decorations with handmade, collected objects - a perfect memento for the year. Head out to Hell’s Mouth or The Warren and scour the shoreline for the perfect shells, pebbles, and driftwood to use in your Christmas crafts. Once you’ve gathered your treasures, put on some Christmas tunes and let your creativity flow. You could try making unique decorations such as shell baubles, miniature shell snowmen, hanging shell decorations or personalised photo frames adorned with your seaside finds. You can also paint rocks with charming Christmas scenes. Whether you are spending a fun afternoon with your children,
or going for more of a paint and sip kind of afternoon, crafts are a great way to spend stormy afternoons.
For the little ones, even though the sun may not be shining, you can still build a Christmas sand sculpture. Why not try a sandangel or a sandman, rather than a snowman, and decorate them with objects you find along the shore. Or, you could decorate the small beach trees you discover along the coast, transforming them into your very own seaside Christmas trees. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors, make memories and embrace the Chritsmas spirit.
CHRISTMAS BAKING
Stock up on fresh local ingredients from the Ffarm shop or Blades Deli and set yourself a festive baking challenge! Whether you’re cooking up a tasty treat for cosy evenings at home, preparing homemade gifts for loved ones, or trying out a new seasonal recipe, there’s no better time to get creative in the kitchen. Enjoy the simple pleasure of baking while filling your home with the comforting aromas of the season.

ON REFLECTION IT WAS A MISTAKE TO ENTER THE VAYNOL WITH HIS TRADEMARK JOHN TRAVOLTA, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER POSE. HE WASN'T FOOLISH ENOUGH TO BELIEVE HE WAS STILL THE PEOPLE MAGNET WHO HAD BEEN SUCH A PLAYER ON THE SOCIAL SCENE BACK IN THE DAY IN LOS ANGELES. BUT, JUDGING BY THE ALMOST COMPLETE ABSENCE OF RECOGNITION, IT SEEMED THAT BOTH HE AND JOHN TRAVOLTA WERE STRANGERS IN A STRANGE LAND. A LAND WHERE THE LOCALS SPOKE IN MAGICAL PIRATE CODE.
It was bad enough so few people recognised him but the faded white suit, with lapels big enough to power a hang glider, gave him the air of a tragic celebrity lookalike, clinging on long after any hint of a likeness had left with the fading of the star in question. Also, he was literally the only person in fancy dress - humiliated in the late afternoon of what had seemed a friendly winter’s day. The ‘Abersoch Christmas Magic’ he’d heard so much about didn’t seem to be sprinkling any fairydust on him.
The early evening drinkers gave this tall loser with a fast-receding hairline a few sideways glances, one or two eyebrows were lifted, a few feet shuffled awkwardly in the embarrassing silence, involuntary laughs barely stifled by cupped hands. A sleepy labrador, startled into a seemingly unstoppable bout of ear-splitting barking by the sea of white polyester swishing past his nose, only served to promote his embarrassment.
He was sure the invite to the Christmas Music Quiz had stipulated a 6pm start and movie music fancy dress. Where was everyone? Why was he the only one taking up the costume option? Why had he gone for such a disastrously loud outfit? Why throw the fingers-to-the-sky pose with such misplaced Californian conviction? Why hadn't he at least prepped with a quick look through the window before striding in like a balding Bee Gee? Checking stuff
out was what he did for a living for Chrissake!
He slunk away into a quiet corner to lick his wounds. Nursing a glass of wellintentioned Guinness Zero, he reflected on the increasingly depressing events of the past six months. His LAPD police pension cashed in early and long gone. His private investigator business (‘LA Confident’ had been a disastrously overconfident name on reflection) now bankrupt and in the debt of several distinctly unsavoury LA characters. His remaining funds dwindling fast, what was left had been invested in what turned out to be misplaced belief in the healing powers of love. Dragging him over the Atlantic to the charming, but startlingly small, market town of Pwllheli. Which it turned out, not only really did begin with five consecutive consonants, but wasn't quite the seaside metropolis he'd been led to believe ("North Wales very own Santa Monica" was a stretch by anyone's measure) by the lovely Carys. Worse still, he’d now discovered that he seemed to be labouring under the same name as a local holiday park.

are left at the gates.’ Maybe he could trade on his ridiculous name somehow in this quiet, but worryingly crime-free, backwater? Because right now his cares were battering down the gates.
Warren Beech wasn't happy.
With Carys long gone, about the only consolation in his current life - semi-illegally holed up in a grubby trailer (what on earth was a static caravan?) on a windswept farm just outside Abersoch - was that the holiday park in question was at least a ‘bespoke luxury destination, where your cares
His mood lifted a little when the worst Elvis impersonator he had ever seen, who might never have been identified at all without the enormous 'Elvis' emblazoned on the back of his leatherette jacket, stumbled through the pub doors. A mumbled, "I ain't nothing but a hound dog" to the bartender was no more convincing, not least as the response was that in which case he'd better stay out of the dining room. Suddenly, being Abersoch's only John Travolta impressionist come out of work private investigator didn't seem quite so bad.
The quiz host unkindly paired him with a group of elderly competitors who seemed unclear whether they were there to play bingo or
answer questions about songs they would prove to have never heard of. If he heard "Is it Cliff Richard?" one more time he'd be investigating his own suicide. Their only concession to fancy dress was each wearing a single white glove. The result was more snooker referee than Michael Jackson.
Humiliated once again by being part of what the host announced in tones distinctly lacking in Christmas cheer was, a ‘new record low score’ he went to prop up the bar. The Guinness Zero pledge long forgotten and his extra-strength lager intake building fast, he was past caring.
"Strange business this sheep rustling, eh?” he heard.
Finally, something interesting! He leaned in to listen, as unobtrusively as anyone could in a gigantic white suit.

I do, I’m a private investigator.”
“Well, it’s not really rustling, is it? They’re just shearing them and doing a runner with the wool.”
“OK, so fleece rustling then.”
“Not exactly crime of the century, is it? The wool is virtually worthless these days. You could argue that they’re doing you farmers a favour. Saving you a job.”
“Still not right though is it. They’ve had six of mine. The police have got nowhere.”
Warren tried not to slur his words, “I could help.”
“Listen mate, if we’d wanted the Great Gatsby to get involved, we would have asked thanks.”
He started trying to explain that he was actually John Travolta, but even in his current state soon saw this was perhaps not the best use of his time. “No, seriously, that’s what
“Yeah right. No win no fee?”
This supersonically fast entry into hard negotiations threw him. “Er… yes, of course. Because Warren Beech never fails.” Why did he find it so easy to lie?
The ruddy-faced farmer cackled. “What did you say your name was?”
Before he could get a word in, the farmer had grabbed the quizmaster’s mic and was telling the whole pub, “Snow White here is going to solve the sheep rustling mystery. And get this, he’s called Warren Beech!”
He hadn’t realised there were further depths to be plumbed along his journey of humiliation. But here it was – an entire pub, his new local, all laughing at him. He grabbed the mic, forgot to press the ‘On’ button and mouthed “Warren Beech! With two e’s! Ace Private
Investigator!” silently into the ether. Defeated, he decided to cut his losses, exiting to a chorus of boos, ironic cheers and a particularly uncalled for, “Warren Beech? What were his parents thinking?”
Every farm he visited, the story was the same. Firstly, the farmers had all heard about his public humiliation, relentless in their disappointment that he wasn’t dancing down their track to Night Fever, flouncing across the farmyard in his billowing white suit. And that, in the dead of night, several of their sheep had been caught, sheared, and released unharmed. The only evidence being a few scraps of wool blowing across their fields and several slightly embarrassed, prematurely bald sheep.
Enquiries confirmed the fleeces were of little to no value. He seemed to be investigating a pointless, motive-less, victimfree crime. So even if he could solve it, it would simultaneously do very little for his reputation whilst, given nobody had really lost anything, almost certainly earn him no money. Still, he had nothing else to do.
Despite everything, The Vaynol had become his second home. The catcalls had subsided from a clamour to a consistent, but largely friendly, murmur. Night Fever was on the jukebox no more than two or three times a night and he’d even made a few acquaintances. The not inaccurately named Grubber had the potential to be particularly useful. He seemed ....

RECIPES
CHOCOLATE ORANGE CHEESECAKE & WINTER BERRIES
RECIPE
BY
SION WILLIAMS (SOUS CHEF, TREMFAN HALL)

INGREDIENTS:
Base:
250g ginger thins
140g salted butter (melted)
Zest of 2 oranges
Filling:
650g full fat soft cheese (room temperature)
350g dark chocolate (70%)
3 large eggs +2 x yolks (room temperature)
180g soft light brown sugar
200g double cream
Zest of 3 oranges (Very fine grate)
METHOD:
Line a 10” baking tin with silicone paper.
Blitz the ginger biscuits to a powder in a food processer and mix with the butter & zest, then smooth the biscuit mix around the tin until flat and even.
Now bake the biscuit base at 160 degrees for 10 minutes, then set aside.
Place the chocolate in a bowl. Heat a pan of water to boiling and take off the heat, place the chocolate on top of the pan and leave to one side for now, do not mix or manipulate.
Whisk the soft cheese & sugar in an electric mixer until soft and fluffy, then add the eggs and mix just till combined.
Now check the chocolate. You want the chocolate to be fully melted, give it a turn with a rubber spatula, if the chocolate is not fully melted return to the heat for just a minute and then set aside and leave it to do its thing.

Heat the cream to around 40 degrees and then mix with the egg mixture until combined.
Now mix together the chocolate, orange zest & egg mixture until a smooth consistency. Pour the filling into the cake tin and tap on the work bench to remove any air bubbles, any service bubbles can be removed with a flash of a cook’s blow torch.
Using a long roll of tin foil, make a double layered skirt to wrap the base of the cake tin to make it watertight, then place it in a baking tray and fill it halfway with hot water.
Bake the cheesecake at 150 degrees for around 55 minutes, you want to take it out with a slight wobble in the centre. This cheesecake is sturdy when chilled due to the chocolate content so don’t be afraid of the wobble in the centre.
Leave the cheesecake to stand for around 1 hour then chill in the fridge overnight for best results.
Cut the cheesecake with a hot knife for a sharp clean look, accompany the cake with vanilla ice cream, clotted or pouring cream, as this is a rich dessert.
Garnish with seasonal or your favourite berries of choice.

Glace cherry for garnish
200ml Advocaat (you can start with 100ml and adjust to taste)

To serve, gently release from the tin, scatter with lemon zest, and finish with a glacé cherry — a nostalgic nod to the classic Snowball.
ICING INGREDIENTS:
Line your tin with paper and brush lightly with melted butter. Mix the crushed biscuits with the remaining butter, press into the base, and chill for 25 minutes.
Whisk the cream cheese and icing sugar until smooth, then add the cream, Advocaat, and lemon zest. Beat until softly set, spoon over the base, and smooth the top. Chill for at least six hours or overnight.
