MATERIALISING ORGANIC IMPERMINANCE
School of Architecture and Archeology on campus of University of Petra
We were tasked with designing a school of architecture on a distant plot that sits on the very edge of campus, by observing it and attempting to reiterate its temporal and atemporal properties into a shelter of learning, I concluded that its a raw, stand-alone hill, yearning for a different approach of construction. An approach that timelessly emphasizes its natural properties and enhances them.
Excavating Forms
What is asked of the spaces to come; is for them to merely exist and allow students to learn about architecture and its history; in a sense that any other aesthetic value the spaces may provide is secondary to their essential job.
Essential Functions
Fundamentally, a school needs two main types of spaces; classrooms and a place to gather. Two forms of what these spaces could be were taken in a pure shape and set within site.

The form emphasizes the relationship (and often tension) between the organic and orthogonal; an abstract composition, juxstaposed within the landscape; that also takes inspiration from hidden archeological layers, making the building itself; in essence, a half buried artifact.
GROUND FLOOR PLAN
debate theater classrooms + management gathering point of dialogue (gallery of rocks)

SOUTHERN ELEVATION

SOUTHERN ELEVATION (POST-DEMOLITION)

A perforated sheet of aged iron wraps around the structure; it starts off solid, with openings (deterioration) increasing as you approach the main point of dialogue between the existing (land. rock, etc) and the imposed (faculty); allowing for maximum lighting in the gallery of rocks, where the line between structure and nature are blurred.

1 Stairs from upper street level to ground floor.
2 Gallery level, with cantilevered grated balcony upstairs.
3 Ground level, balcony overlooking the gallery downstairs.
4 Triple height theatre with a sun beam cutting through and shining diffeently depending on time of day.
5 Long ramp leading from lower level to ground floor, wall on the left is shaped by the site.

02
SITE AS A ROOM
Second home for a family of 3, Badr Al-Jadeeda
Located on a distant hill away from the hustle and bustle of Amman, a vast site lush with native trees and bushes that were meant to be kept and respected. The large area allows for the house to be in the center with plenty of bordering space, this lead me to think of the plot as a large room with spaces situated at different angles framing views of the neighbouring mountains, and on a clear day, the dead sea.
Extruding spaces + mediating relationships
A living/ dining / kitchen area is needed; in addition to two bedrooms for parents and their daughter, a special area dedicated for outdoor yoga and meditation was also requested in addition to a swimming pool. The compostion of these 3 rectangles on site was arranged between views, existing gabeon borders, and ancient native trees.
Seperating the room
A rectangle shelter in the center of the site wraps around an existing olive tree and faces views of both mountains and the distant dead sea, the rectangle was then partitioned to accomodate for the above-mentioned functions; allowing private terraces for each of the bedrooms.
An extrusion of the site, extending outwards; an exchange between rigid and playful geometries that respond to the existing surface.

accessible roof surface conforming to both functions underneath + site translucent sheet partially shelters and disguises the accessible roof

A CONTINUATION OF THE URBAN CONTEXT
Boutique hotel, residences, resturant, and gym on Zahran street
We were tasked with designing 6 hotel rooms, 3 studios, 2 2 bedroom apartments, and 1 3 bedroom apartment just a few steps away from Zahran Park and overlooking an expansive view of Amman; the site suggested a form that mimics the clustered compositions of the hills of Amman, where rock meets concrete and machine.
Bordering the Program
To allow for maximum use of space, an offset was taken from all 4 sides of the plot; after which walls were placed in lines emphasizing both views and each apartment having accessible outdoor space, essentially, 4 forms were placed on different levels according to topography.
Situating Users
The spaces were situated on a basis of convenience, the users of the hotel rooms pass through the reception, but the studio and residential back mass users can access their units directly from the parking or seperate back entrance.

Narrow staircases leading to an urban corner, a pedestrian bridge adjacent to exposed rock and lush greenery, all in contrast to the load bearing concrete structures.
