Sited in downtown Columbus, this project transforms an under-utilized riverfront site into a mixed use and residential space.

Three towers--two bending to meet and one that has turned on its side to take in views of the river--house 340 one, two, and three-bedroom units, 80,000 square feet of amenity and retail space, and two levels of covered parking.

The towers reduce building footprint on the site, creating the perfect space for a nature reserve that intertwines with the city’s existing bike trail.

As the site is located on the north side of University of Chicago campus there are two strong edges created both at a university scale by the old buildings, and at a neighborhood scale by Washington Park, that isolates the campus from the city. On the contrary, I wanted to break the edge created by the campus and the park, in order to relate the building to campus and to urban surroundings. These edges were extruded as bars and rotated allowing for a gateway into the project and emphasizing strong visual connections to either the downtown Chicago skyline, the campus, the neighborhood or the surrounding parks. The intersection of these bars allow for the idea of ‘smooshed program’, which is a reaction to Chicago’s urban fabric/downtown plinth, and the congestion of the skyscrapers. The ‘smooshed program’ houses the communal areas, where it allows for several programs to happen within one larger contiguous space, such as student lounges, theater, classrooms, recreation rooms, kitchens, music rooms etc.; similar to the notion of the Chicago plinth.

An architectural infill proposal for Detroit must transcend the idea of physical growth by considering ways to develop continuity between moments of urban vibrancy and moments of vacancy. With a neighborhood of low, light-industrial buildings to the north and empty land along the Detroit River to the south, the site exemplifies the tenuous relationship between the built and unbuilt. Our proposal for the site comprises a number of architectural interventions in the existing George W. Young Post Office as well as an array of new

structures in the open space between the building and the river.It defines gradients of densification, from residential to industrial, through a loose composition of solids and voids that not only changes one’s perceptions of built space but also acknowledges the value of the spaces, or vacancies, in between.

My contribution to this project was mainly focused on fabrication and assembly of the model. This includes 3D modeling, 3D printing, and 5-axis milling of models. Moreover, I worked closely with curators on specific design problems to develop different solutions for each different instance.

Re-designing Boston City Hall as an aggregated mass was the main focus of the studio and how one could use different aggregation strategies that creates laminar pochè in the interior. For this project I started off with a simple box that sits on the site then created a voronoi pattern that then gets subtracted from the designed shape. The Laminar Pochè is then created by the addition of the smaller voronoi cells that accomodate the special spaces such as the mayor’s suite, the council chamber, and the Marriage Chapel. Moreover, the design of the massing creates main public plaza in the center of the building that activates the plaza and creates an attraction for the public. Also, as one approaches the building there are many landscape features that one could engage with, one can also move through the ramp that circulates through the main public spaces. The building is also divided into three main parts that then gets connected by the smaller cells at the upper level, which creates an elevated public lobby.

On an infill corner site couple blocks away from Zaha’s building in Cincinnati we were assigned to design an office building for the Sierra Club Headquarters in the Mid-west. The main topic of the studio was excessive volume and how volume can organize the space inside the building. The main idea of the project is to have one large Void that gets subdivided into three different voids. Each of these then thickens that creates an Occupiable Pochè. This then creates a distinct program for each of the three voids, the first is semi-void, which is half solid half void that creates an outdoor space for office space and a garden for special plants. The second is a void that gets enforced by the carving into the floor plates and some solid surfaces, which creates the main library. The third type of void is the solid void, which is the auditorium. Since the neighbouring building was for sale the auditorium penetrates into it. Also, it creates a leaking pochè that allows for circulation and welome space around the auditorium. Since our site is at a corner with an alley, the building gets pulled up at that corner to enforce the entrance and allow for welcoming entrance and outdoor space for the public.

XEFIROTARCH WORKSHOP 3 DAY WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR: TERM:

IVAN BERNAL SPRING 2014

This workshop positioned advanced animation and modeling as essential tools for the production of engaging architectural scenarios. We looked in depth at techniques derived from cinema that can develop aesthetic criteria for the critical evaluation of architectural form and explore how image and presentation play essential roles in the perception of architecture. The workshop consisted of two main ingredients: behaviors and choreography. For behaviors we focused on architectural form as a series of behaviors by approaching geometry as a living thing that can exhibit postures, deformations, contortions, expressions and growth. We experimented with modeling and animation techniques as design tools to generate geometric entities with these embedded behaviors. As for choreography, in order to expresses an idea, an image must convey a feeling, an atmosphere—even a sense of lust or desire. Such sensations can be produced by choreographing architectural form through strategic rendering and animation techniques. The workshop introduced multiple, layered 2D rendering techniques that fully engage the senses of a viewer through depth and texture. As a final step we too these methods further by developing a fully 3D animation with camera movement, paths, aims, transitions, and lighting.

BEACH DUPLEX

SINGLE FAMILY AND GRANDPA’S

BEN WILKE FALL 2012

On a site overlooking the ocean we were assigned to design a beach duplex for a single family attached to it a similar duplex for the retired Grandpa. The design of the duplex evolved from an earlier design of the Sphere project, where the most private space on the edges and the public space in the center. In order to move to any private space you have to go through the central public space, which comes from the early design of the sphere.

Also, the single family duplex is designed as a summer house, while Grandpa’s duplex is designed for him to live in year round. Moreover, in both duplexes you get some shaded patios overlooking the ocean, which result from the interlocking of attached spaces. Lastly, if you look closely to the design, you could recognize that each room has its own distinct view, yet they all overlook the ocean.

Under the guidance of Angela Co, ten students participated in the Endgame workshop. The project began with sketches of animal silhouettes that then evolved into three-dimensional forms by ways of carving foam cubes. These foam extrusions were then interbred with the same animals to produce a highly regular form. Next, each animal was crossbred with another to produce an irregular new species. The zoo of animals was stacked in a totem based on longitudinal and transverse forms that resulted in a complex structure, the Endgame team then explored the process of vaulting and discovering surprises in modeling sections.

On the same site as the Herzog de Meuron winning project, we were assigned to design twenty residential apartments. I started off by developing the old design of the beach duplex with locating the most private spaces on the edges with a central public space connecting all of them. I then incorporated a vertical farmers’ market occupying most of the exterior spaces of the apartments. Actually, the market is located on top of the building, so in order for anyone to access it we either have to create exterior circulation, which would create an awful facade.; or a second option was to get people through the resident circulation and go up to the market, which I think is an invasion of one’s privacy.

Thus, I created this hydraulic system that would allow the building to move down on market days and move up again after market ends. During market hours people living in the lower floor will enjoy the live theater happening underground.

The Venice Architecture Biennale was organized under the theme of Absorbing Modernity. Under that direction the U.S Pavilion houses both a repository of information about the history of architectural firms in the US with a focus on the US’s role in exporting architecture, and serves as the base of operations for a new architectural firm that was created only for the biennale. The research was collected into booklets that line the walls of the pavilion.

Along with designed tables for the members of OfficeUS to work at.

My contribution to this project was mainly focused on research on the projects and creating the booklets that then were assembled on site at Venice. Also, I worked on site on the installation and the fabrication of the pavilion itself. Moreover, I worked closely with OfficeUS partners on several research projects that were later developed into works for OfficeUS, and was responsible for 3D printing the models needed at the time. My contribution also included designing and organizing a dinner for 150 donors to the project.
