Motivation Letter It's been five years already; my words can not express gratitude and pleasure for the time I've spent as a member of this generous, heart-warming family where I've felt belonging to more than anything else.

It's been an outstanding adventure and an absolutely life-changing experience.

I still remember every single detail of the early moments of this journey. I believe I could make a movie or a TV show out of it. In 2015, our NOME back then, who happened to be a student at my faculty, invited me to join the organizing committee of a small local event in our university. I didn't even know what IFMSA is and there were many abbreviations (SCOME, SCOPE, SCORE…etc) and terms that I was oblivious about, I was sure that the only reason why a young freshman like me would be in the team is that because older students have exams or maybe they couldn't make it for any reason.

Events put up and tangled throughout the years leading me to where I stand right 36 now, a candidate for the position of the Liaison Officer for Medical Education issues.

Dearest IFMSA family, My name is Abdullah Al-Khafajy, and I come from the wellspring from which modern societies emerged, the cradle of civilization and education, and the land where the World’s first known system of writing was born: Mesopotamia (aka Iraq). I currently serve as the IFMSA SCOME General Assistant, and now I present to you the five Is of why i want to be your Liaison Officer for Medical Education Issues:

This country is absolute proof of miracles! Imagine living in a country that has been in all shapes of extreme violence and brutality (war, militarization, global embargo, sanctions, invasion, civil war, terrorism, militias, chaos, corruption, systematic destruction, sectarianism, suppression etc.) for 40 straight years since 1980, hard to imagine right? This place must be a hopeless piece of land that will never see the light at the end of the tunnel. Contrary to this prediction, Iraqis over the years have proved the world wrong; in 2007 the Iraqi national football team reunited the Iraqi people when they won the AFC Asian Cup for nations against world-class teams while the country was in the civil war; in 2017 the Iraqi armed forces liberated all of Iraq’s territory by eliminating the world’s deadliest, most powerful terrorist organization (ISIS). In 2018 Nadia Murad earned the Nobel Prize for her efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict after she was abducted and held as a sex slave under the captivity of ISIS and was repeatedly subjected to rape and other abuses and inhuman violations. She now works to help women and children who are victims of abuse and human trafficking. All of that only shows what Iraqis are made of. How much strength, discipline, consistency, resilience, and sacrifice they have revealed throughout the years. It’s not any different in IFMSA, if you look at it: IFMSA-Iraq only joined IFMSA in 2015, yet after only four years, we provided the Executive Board of the federation with a VPCB who I believe is doing a pretty good job. Likewise, while representing IFMSA-Egypt, the SCORP Director has proven to be great in the exact same context, living a challenging life as a refugee after immigrating from Iraq in 2006 during the civil war. Yet, Iraqis in IFMSA haven’t reached their full capacity so far.

I seek to use this opportunity to continue the march and be another good example to serve and contribute to the federation and the NMOs judging on my broad national experience as a LOME, NOME Assistant, and NOME, especially on the external level where I dealt with different types of externals (supportive, collaborative, careless, ignorant, corrupt, opposing etc.). My external efforts

Motivation Letter led me to be honored to hold the board positions of the Students’ Representative within the Medical Education Council of Iraq (MECIQ) and the Students’ Representative within the National Council for Accreditation of Medical Colleges - Iraq (NCAMC) for the period 2018-2019, starting a revolution of meaningful students’ engagement in Medical Education when this term wasn’t known among the Iraqi student society before.

International Experience In 2017, for the first time, I got the chance to represent my NMO in an IFMSA General Assembly and god knows how this dramatically changed my life. August Meeting in Tanzania was by far one of the major turning points of my life, when IFMSA showed me the worth of36 our collective efforts and how far we can go together. As Barack Obama says: “A change is brought around because ordinary people do extraordinary things.” Two years later, after digging deep in Medical Education, after achieving so much nationally as a NOME, and after mightily fighting for it to happen, I attended the WFME World conference in Seoul, the world’s greatest, most-decisive, most-crucial Medical Education event (beside AMEE), side by side with the most powerful, knowledgeable and influential Medical Education stakeholders from around the globe. I wanted to use this opportunity to spot those with the most substantial influence and significant presence in the conference to invite 48 them to a student-led accreditation themed conference in Iraq, and here comes the surprise: I was prepared to explain that the situation in Iraq is getting better and you shouldn’t worry about safety and security procedures when you travel, but whenever I asked an external to be a guest at the conference, the answer was bold and clear: Why not? Yes! Without any further ado, right to the point. Well, what happened there undoubtedly changed my view and inspired me for life.Unfortunately, that conference didn’t happen yet due to the circumstances that occurred after the demonstrations in Iraq, but on the other hand, the connections and networks of externals that I made are still active, and I have fantastic relations with people from various Medical Education backgrounds and capacities including prof. David Gordon, the current President of the WFME himself!Today, after five years since joining IFMSA, I proudly stand as the member with the highest number of international events and participation in the history of my NMO (IFMSA-Iraq) with a total of 24 international events.

Interregional Approach The international experiences I have had resulted in many fulfilling personal rewards; one of them was making friends from 81 different countries from all the continents across the world. In addition to its personal value, those social and cultural interactions we all have in IFMSA by working with peers from around the globe with whom we share common interests and aspirations are more than necessary to maintain the quality, utility, and most importantly, diversity of the outcomes of our collective efforts.Throughout my ongoing journey with IFMSA, I was fortunate to travel and attend IFMSA events in four out of five of the IFMSA regions (Africa, Asia-Pacific, EMR, and Europe), most of them more than once, and I got the opportunity to discover, understand, and interpret their challenges, attributes, and aspirations and that eventually led me to construct a better view and a better realization of their different involvement cultures in IFMSA.Ultimately, this experience gives LME CANDIDATURE | 4

me an advantage in my work as LME, if elected, to become more globally oriented, focusing on the NMOs under the motto of thinking globally, acting locally. And to continue the tradition, I pledge to be present next term in at least three different Regional Meetings (even if I had to pay for my expenses) with the Americas Regional Meeting having the top priority for my attendance (since it’s the only region I haven’t been to yet) as well as the usual attendance to both of the General Assemblies in March and August.

Inspiration I don’t know if it was a total coincidence, or it was meant to be, but luckily I crossed paths with many inspiring IFMSAians from all around the globe. One of them happened to be the former Liaison Officer for Medical Education issues, she was my trainer in the TMET workshop I attended in the pre GA 2017 in Tanzania. I was there when she was elected for the 36 position for the first time and, even though back then I wasn't very sure that I understood entirely what an LME does or how does external representation work (well you can’t put all the blame on me, especially since it was my first GA), eventually, I decided to follow her steps and become an LME myself one day, knowing that it would be a tough job trying to fill in her shoes. However, I’m all fraught with passion and motivation to make it happen.

48 I would describe it Becoming the SCOME General Assistant this term was an enriching experience, as if it was a love affair; as much as I wanted the position, the position wanted me as well! Not only because I am a member of a stunning family of passionate, dedicated, and diligent people of the SCOME International Team 19/20, but also because of the many privileges and features of the position itself. As a GA, I am the vessel that connects all members of the team, developing collaboration routes with and within the SCOME International Team.I feel I am at the center of every action and in the cast of every process. I am the IT member in charge of team building and dynamics, task management ensuring the team’s accountability and following up on everyone’s work, communication platforms and members’ engagement, institutional memory, documentation, and being the right hand of any team member in need of support. Serving in that central role with full access to all SCOME’s resources and capacities, and being thoroughly involved and updated on all the internal processes and activities determines my competence to correctly reflect on them externally.

DEDICATION, COMMITMENT AND PROFESSIONALISM I wanted to start my plan of action with this point for an absolute belief I have that the work we do in IFMSA is not just a voluntary work to occupy our spare times, neither a side job that we can prioritize other things over. It’s a full-time job, a responsibility that we choose to hold, and that responsibility is what our 1.3 million medical students worldwide community hold us accountable for.And as I'm running for this position, I realize that if I get elected, nothing will remain the same.That’s why I'm devoting this part of my candidature as a promise to maximize my:

AVAILABILITY Professionalism, ethics, and trust are the significant values that regulate my relationship with the federation and the NMOs. Devoting time every single day to remain continuously in contact and closeness to NMOs and members, answering to their needs and inquiries.

I pledge to attend at least three regional meetings for the next term specifying a considerable amount of time during these meetings to meet with our members.

Being adequately present in the SCOME, SCOPE and SCORE sessions during IFMSA Meetings.

APPROACHABILITY Making sure to be approachable as much as possible through email, social media platforms, and physically during international meetings and events I attend.

Trying my best to respond to emails within less than 24 hours, messages and calls on social media in less than 48 hours and urgent matters immediately.

VISIBILITY Making sure to maintain a high level of involvement, participation, and taking the initiative within the Team of Officials.

Trying to be present in more external meetings next term doing my best to match and even surpass any former LME representing IFMSA intensively among our partners.

As previously mentioned, being present in multiple IFMSA meetings, including General Assemblies, Regional Meetings, SubRegional trainings and other events organized by the NMOs. I would hereby like to mention that I`m financially stable to cover for any of my travel expenses if the federation couldn’t fully cover them, or if there was any shortage of the external budget. Also, I have the support of certain governmental authorities in my country, which should be more than contributory to the achievement of this point through providing more support to my travels, visas and other related matters.

FOLLOW UP After an intensive handover, maintaining a long-term line of communication for feedback and advice with the former LME (whenever possible) and creating an inclusive Annual Working Plan taking into account the coordination with the Vice President for External Affairs and Liaison Officers team on one hand and the SCDs (SCOPE, SCORE, and SCOME Directors) and their International Teams on the other hand.I will start to build upon the achievements of the former LMEs securing previous successes and sustaining an escalating momentum of progress in the upcoming term; this shall be done through: Creating a non-formal Mentorship group with three former LMEs for guidance and advice, especially in cases of emergencies during external meetings or at any time input from experienced mentors is needed.

Using my skills in institutional memory management and referencing to update the Medical Education External resources starting from any potential changes or amendments of the IFMSA Global Priorities, adopted Policy Documents, Regional Priorities, Memoranda of Understanding, Terms of references documents, and SCs strategy and regulations, creating follow-up / utility sheets for those resources, and making them accessible for the SCOME, SCOPE, and SCORE International Teams.

Stakeholder analysis to be conducted and regularly updated for each external goal of the term, taking into account the input provided by the VPE, LOs, SCDs, and ITs whenever needed.

An updated External Medical Education Events Calendar for the term shall be ready during the first month, both will be shared with the NMOs with their relevant calls, opportunities, links, updates, and resourcesِ.

A comprehensive review of the Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) and Terms of Reference (ToR) documents for each external partner to come up with more ideas for the implementation and development of their terms. In a related context, new efforts for more opportunities to sign new MoUs will be undertaken throughout the term.

Reaching out to all of our medical education external partners during the first month of the term aiming to sustain the communication and overcome the barrier of being newly elected, the goal here is becoming a familiar face within their working environment like my presence as LME as an Executive Committee member with the WFME and AMEE for example.

Incorporating questions on external representation within the SCOME Baseline assessment and NMO Report questions to evaluate NMOs’ input and reflections on the external work of the three Standing Committees.

PARTNERSHIPS Initiating new partnerships is fundamental to strengthen our federation as well as sustaining and securing the already existing ones.During the term, many efforts will be taken to move our representation more steps further within the frame of our partnerships, including: Attending all the necessary external meetings organized by our partners either in person, virtually, or by sending a delegation.

Assuring the active presence, participation and visibility of IFMSA with the regional Medical Education externals, their events, and projects, such as the WFME’s regional associations and maintaining proper communication and coordination with the Regional Directors to assure appropriate preparations for the delegations as well as involving the SCOME, SCOPE, SCORE, and External Affairs RAs whenever possible.

Ensuring the mutual commitment to the Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) as the basis of the relations with our partners.

Initiating serious efforts and robust approaches towards partners whom we don’t have officially documented partnerships with to sign new Memoranda of Understanding (MoU).

Seeking all potential new partnerships during the term by addressing organizers, sponsors, guests, panelists, speakers, presenters, and attendants of every single external meeting and starting a conversation with those we could collaborate with during or after the meeting.

Expanding NMOs’ involvement by advocating for spots for student delegates in external meetings as well as creating opportunities for further involvement such as Youth spots within Organizing Committees of the external events held by our partners.

Being the Mediator for the contact between NMOs and external partners whenever needed (ECFMG, CIDMEF, FAIMER are examples of organizations that work on the national level; therefore, a national approach by NMOs could be beneficial especially in matters of Accreditation and Quality Assurance of medical schools).

Inviting multiple externals according to a schedule and a needs assessment to be present in our GAs and Regional Meetings to enrich the materials delivered during the SC sessions and to have them as speakers in theme events.

Seeking Meaningfulness of IFMSA’s participation, presence, and representation in external meetings through submitting abstracts, statements, reports, surveys, research papers, and other submissions after assuring their quality and implying inputs by the VPE-LOs team, as well as Organizing side events such as workshops, symposia, and panel discussions whenever possible.

A CONTINUOUS LOOP OF COMMUNICATION! With an enormous number of externals like the one we have and the endless tasks and duties, the only way to get the work done is by working in a team and as Isaac Newton says: “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”As LME, I seek to work intensively with the following teams as follows:

IFMSA TEAM OF OFFICIALS Attending all the Team of Officials meetings, General Assemblies and at least three Regional Meetings are a major priority of my candidature. The LME has a significant contribution to the TO (which I intend to raise and be one of the most active team members) by working on an intersectoral approach with multiple officials of the team including: A- The VPE-LOs team: 1. Maintain a strong presence and a close relationship with the Vice-President for External Affairs and the Liaison Officers, exhibit commitment to the duties assigned by the VPE and provide input to all processes.

2. Increase the LME’s engagement and contribution to the work and activities of the other LOs whenever possible (PreWHA and WHA with the LWHO, Interprofessional Education & Collaboration themed meetings with the LOSO, and any other mutual theme/project with the LPH, LRP, and LRA).

B- The Standing Committee Directors (SCOME D, SCOPE D and SCORE D): 1. Having regular meetings with the SCDs. 2. Assisting the SCDs with the IT selection.

3. Contribute to the development and execution of the SC sessions.

4. Work with each SCD to execute the goals of the relevant Global Priorities, pillars of the SC strategy, and the SC regulations, providing input to internal procedures, proposing amendments according to the external needs, as well as drafting new resources and publications.

C- The Regional Directors: 1. Collaborate on working with regional Medical Education externals as mentioned above.

2. Delegate RDs to attend regional Medical Education external meetings as Head of Delegation in the event of my inability to attend.

3. Work side-by-side with RDs and their Regional Teams (SCOME, SCOPE, SCORE, and EA RAs mainly) towards the best implementation of the Medical Education related Regional Priorities.

INTERNATIONAL TEAMS Assuring the highest possible level of involvement and participation among: SCOME IT SCOPE IT SCORE IT External Affairs IT If elected, I’m willing to involve International Teams in external work extensivelyby sharing updates, opportunities, and initiatives as well as collecting input and feedback, reaching an integration between the Internal work and External representation. This could be achieved through 1. Capacity Building: IT members' education on the LME’s work, IFMSA external efforts, and involvement opportunities.

2. Communication: working on a collaborative strategy for communication, promotion, and members engagement where IT members contribute to spreading the word on the regional and SC levels.My having developed a personal competency on communication strategies and planning through my work as a General Assistant shall considerably contribute to making the implementation of this point much more comfortable.

A CONTINUOUS LOOP OF COMMUNICATION! 3. Advocacy: collaborating with the RDs to work with external regional associations.

4. Leadership: assigning IT members with external experience and motivation to carry on leadership roles under my close supervision on some external tasks like policy SWGs and commissions as examples. This will expand their competencies throughout the term and help produce better prepared LMEs for the future.

Active presence and interaction with International Teams in the IT OLMs and physical meetings are also among my pressing priorities for the next term.

NATIONAL MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS (NMOS) AND MEMBERS NMOs are the building blocks of the federation, without their input and meaningful involvement we wouldn't be able to make such enormous achievements during all these years.According to that, their involvement in external representation especially in medical education shouldn’t be limited to only being selected to attend external meetings as a part of an IFMSA delegation or providing input to a particular document; it should be widened to include: 1. Research Initiatives: I believe that one of my pressing duties is to maximize IFMSA’s presence in the medical literature. Serious collective efforts shall be taken, especially with the SCORE D and IT, to raise the quality and quantity of scientific writing within the federation.

2. Communication: Involvement through the communication platforms such as social media campaigns with externals, that could be as simple as sharing a hashtag or retweeting a thread, but collectively will promote awareness on the subject of interest and add considerable visibility to our work.

3. Small Working Groups (SWGs): I intend to work closely with the Standing Committee Directors and other officials when it comes to proposing Medical Education related SWGs, the goal here is to develop external goals within the objectives of the proposed SWGs wherever possible and whenever needed to produce useful outcomes for our work with the externals.

GLOBAL PRIORITIES As the Global Priorities are currently being developed, restructured, and reproposed, I will act on addressing and following up on the external goals of the priorities and as follows:

HEALTH WORKFORCE 2030 Continuing IFMSA’s efforts on Accreditation and Quality Assurance (AQA) of medical schools worldwide 1. promoting the “Medical Students’ Toolkit towards a meaningful involvement in Accreditation and Quality Assurance” among the relevant externals (mainly the World Federation for Medical Education) for recognition, endorsement, collaboration, and contributions.

2. Presenting the outcomes of IFMSA/NMOs’ involvement on the field during the upcoming Medical Education external meetings.

3. Delivering or submitting statements, interventions, and policy briefs during the relevant external meetings based on our AQA Policy Document.

Pursuing advocacy efforts on the themes of Health Regulation, Health Workforce Education, Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Innovation in Medical Education using the relevant policies such as the IPE Policy Document as a key tool.

Advancing IFMSA’s work on Social Accountability (SA) 1. Exploring areas of improvement and updating in the Students’ Toolkit on SA of Medical Schools with THEnet.

2. Expanding IFMSA’s involvement in the TUFH2021 through co-organizing, speaking, and presenting at the conference based on the IFMSA stance in the SA Policy Document.

3. Leading advocacy efforts on the themes of Family Medicine, Primary Health Care, Rural Health Workforce, and Socially Accountable Research according to the stances in the relevant Policy Documents (such as PHC and Rural Health policies) and in collaboration with WONCA. 4. Starting the 2nd edition of the Social Accountability Students Online Course in collaboration with AMEEMR after integrating the feedback from the last version, filling the gaps, and improving content and delivery.

5. Working with patient organizations through the International Alliance of Patients’ Organizations (IAPO) on the themes of Patient Safety and Patient/People Centered Care.

6. Raising awareness and advocating for Decent Working Conditions and a safe working environment through the Safeguarding Healthcare in Conflict Coalition.

Continue to align advocacy, capacity building, and research efforts as a member of the Global Health Workforce Network (GHWN) 1. IFMSA’s representation in the Youth Hub, Education Hub, Equity Hub, and the Steering Committee and carrying on advocacy work on matters like the Health Workforce Education and Gender Equity in the Health Workforce.

Attending the 5th Human Resources for Health forum whenever it is agreed upon its dates and location, is a major priority of my term as LME if elected for its utmost importance to review progress on the WHO strategy for Health workforce 2030 and illustrate critical actions and interventions for the upcoming decade.

GLOBAL PRIORITIES Collectively, all advocacy activities regarding the Health Workforce 2030 Global Priority will be based on the IFMSA Policy Document on Global Health Workforce.

GLOBAL HEALTH EDUCATION Inviting externals and guest speakers to the next edition of the Global Health Weekend.

Collaborating with ScholarRx in the development of Global Health online educational bricks.

Exploring opportunities to update and enhance the IFMSA Global Health training manual in collaboration with relevant externals.

Promoting IFMSA’s work on Global Health Education through the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) during their CUGH2021 conference, in addition to seeking other opportunities and external meetings such as the AMEE Conference.

All advocacy activities regarding the Global Health Education Global Priority will be based on the IFMSA Policy Document on Global Health Education.

OPEN SCIENCE

Assuring the optimal representation of IFMSA during OpenCon 2021 as a co-organizer, in addition to proposing an advocacy side event and a group of abstracts and statements.

Inviting externals and guest speakers to the activities of the Open Access Week organized by the SCORE IT in parallel to the international Open Access campaign.

The actions mentioned above are applicable in the likely event of adopting the proposed Global Priorities and Policy Documents during the Online August Meeting.

Regional Priorities Depending on how Regional Priorities will take place next term, supporting Regional Directors and Regional Teams is one of my aspirations, especially in terms of executing and implementing Medical Education related external goals of their Regional Priorities and Strategies.

POLICIES AND ADVOCACY Perhaps the most essential duty of an LME is giving medical students worldwide a voice in the world of Medical Education; Policy Documents are the tools that support this cause representing the stance of 1.3 medical students worldwide.For us in IFMSA, to have more influence in the political world, we need to preserve the rising momentum of quality and quantity of the adopted Policies. Accordingly, I’m willing to take the lead on the following actions: Conducting a needs assessment with the three Standing Committee Directors and International Teams to address the potential policies to be proposed during the two General Assemblies according to their urgency, relevance, range of utility.

MedEd Policy week: a campaign on the communication platforms (social media and email servers) of the three standing committees; SCOME, SCOPE, and SCORE to promote Policy making, usage, and implementation on both the global and national levels to be conducted during the term.

Continue the approach of assigning an IT Contact Person to work with the Policy Drafting Small Working Groups to assist the LME and SWG Coordinator with managing the work of the SWG and contributing to the drafting process. Experience in Policy making will be the foundation of selecting the IT Contact Persons.

Initiating the action on implementation methods and strategies for the Meaningful Student Engagement, Ethics and Healthcare, and Open Science policies in the case of their adoption as soon as the new term starts.

Although it’s early to make a decision, but as a primary thought, I believe the most essential and needed policy proposals for MM21 should be; re-proposing the Global Health Workforce policy widening its aspects and shedding more light on the emerging contributing factors to the GHW crisis like the Health Workforce education, regulation, and accreditation; proposing a new policy on Patient Safety and Patient/People-Centered Care that shall be more than contributory to sustaining the relations with patient organizations, mainly through the International Alliance of Patients’ Organizations (IAPO). Any additional policies will be added or prioritized over those two according to the needs assessment and consultation.

Incorporating Policy Making within the agendas of the Capacity Building activities of the three SCs whenever possible to capacitate more members who could be potential policy SWG members in the near future, as well as integrating their input to the policy processes during and after the CB activity (physical or online workshops).

EXCHANGES It’s no secret that SCOPE and SCORE require more attention from the LME and assistance on the external level. Coming from a SCOME background shall not be a barrier for my pursuit to achieve that as I intend to give the right amount of time, effort, and devotion to the two exchange committees by: Keeping close contact with the directors and IT of SCOPE and SCORE, attending monthly meetings, reporting, giving feedback in addition to being present in their SC session in GAs and RMs. Continuing to carry on the efforts on seeking recognition and endorsements of our exchange programs by all the possible relevant medical societies, scientific associations, and external organizations.

Updating the existing handbooks for different departments by collaborating with externals and integrating any relevant necessary external resources to maximize their quality and utility. I would concentrate on the ones currently lacking or outdated, paying extra attention to handbooks for Global Health, Family Medicine, and Primary Health Care for their growing significance but according to their priority, as well as working on preparing, publishing, and promoting new handbooks.

Seeking external recognition and endorsement of the SCORE Research Exchange Program Student Logbook.

Seeking new external opportunities for SCOPE and SCORE, increasing the visibility of our exchanges and their impact, developing a promotion plan where I’ll work with the SCOPE and SCORE Directors and their ITs to present the value of our exchange programs, their impact, and the outcomes of the exchange programs, through working on evaluation forms data in addition to using the many already existing ones.

Exploring the possibilities of having external reviews for the exchange projects submitted by our members.

Maintaining a very close contact with the External Development Assistants (EDAs) of both SCOPE and SCORE. I believe sufficient contact and proper ongoing communication between the LME and the EDAs is the key to a powerful representation of SCOPE and SCORE, therefore, if elected, the EDAs will be my right hand and my closest colleagues in exchanges.

Supporting NMOs who are working to achieve national recognition and endorsement of their exchange programs and projects by national governmental and non-governmental stakeholders through support letters, email threads, and online meetings whenever possible.

Promoting the use of the Basic Research Competencies Framework (BRCF) with the SCORE IT as a way to encourage the various kinds of research initiatives by our members which shall contribute to the purpose of increasing IFMSA’s presence in the medical literature, as well as promoting the framework among our external partners for recognition and endorsement.

IFMSA SCORE RESEARCH CAMP I believe that this event is one of the greatest capacity building opportunities offered by the federation and therefore I would like to build on that to maximize the gained outcomes and the reach of its impact in terms of:

EXCHANGES Recognition: assuring that every version of the Research Camp is recognized and endorsed by medical research external organizations and academic institutions (universities, medical association, scientific societies, and any other relevant educational authority) Promotion: implementing a communication plan to promote the Research Camp among our members and external partners through the federation’s communication platforms and by presenting abstracts, reports, and other materials during the Medical Education external meetings IFMSA will attend throughout the term.

Sponsorship: seeking any potential opportunity to get sponsorship and funding from externals (governments, universities, educational platforms etc.) for the Research Camp, as well as supporting the hosting NMO with fundraising and sponsorships on the national level.

I would like to mention that I will do my best to attend this year’s Research Camp (RC20) in Bucharest, Romania to formulate a excellent overview of the event in order to evaluate and analyze in collaboration with the SCORE D the possible actions and opportunities for improvement, in addition to being in contact with NOREs and SCOREans during the event, collecting their input, and reflecting on their experience.

CAPACITY BUILDING AND MEMBERS EDUCATION After a cumulative experience of eleven Capacity Building workshops (five as a trainer/facilitator), I believe I can contribute to the position with my rich CB background. Capacity Building will be one of the major foundations of my work by: Seeking all possible capacity building opportunities by our external partners (webinars, workshops, side events, documents, publications etc.) and working on increasing IFMSA’s involvement and participation in those opportunities (such as the Social Accountability Online Course in collaboration with AMEEMR).

Inviting external guests, speakers, and panelists to the Medical Education campaigns and activities of IFMSA, including but not limited to webinars, Standing Committee sessions, and Theme Events of General Assemblies and Regional Meetings, assuring to have the invitations approved and sent as early as possible to minimize rejections.

Collaborating with the SCOME IT to organize a number of External Representation Online Open Space Discussions (OSDs) within their Interregional Collaboration Framework (IRCF) to engage the members with our external work and updates which shall contribute to building their capacity in External Representation and provide them with a safe space to share their input, feedback, questions, and reflections.

Design a comprehensive and up-to-date outline for an External Representation in Medical Education training session to be delivered during the SCOME, SCOPE, and SCORE workshops and Standing Committee sessions during IFMSA meetings, containing Standing Committee specific materials (general outline with particular parts to be used with either of the three Standing Committees), to be delivered by the LME in person or other members of the International Teams (such as External Development Assistants).

Design an outline for a MedEd Policy Masterclass session to provide participants with policy making skills with a focus on the Medical Education related policies, including policy making processes, SWGs, commissions, reviewing committees, policy briefs, statements etc. to be conducted in the same way mentioned in the previous point.

Starting a series of publications on the communication platforms of the three Standing Committees under the name of (External of the month) where posters, infographics, text, and relevant links are shared on a monthly basis to introduce our members to the different external stakeholders that IFMSA works with, with a description of their field of work, what have we done with them so far, and how to be involved.

Collaborate with the relevant IT members (General Assistants and External Development Assistants) on regularly updating our external resources through the SCOME Public Folder, NEO Folder, and NORE Folder.

Maintain and increase the LME’s involvement in the Global Health Advocates (GHA) workshops providing tips, updates, and insights on External Representation from a Medical Education perspective.

Sharing updates from the External Meetings I attend in person or send a delegation to on the communication platforms of IFMSA, allowing members and NMOs to be involved, ask questions, or provide input concerning the meeting.

HANDOVER AND CONTINUITY As I’m running for this position, I aspire to leave a footprint, not just by devoting myself to making as much progress as I can throughout the term, but also by being part of shaping the future for this position and making sure that my successor will be fully equipped with all the tools, knowledge, and guidance to continue the march of achievements. Thus, I pledge to commit to a comprehensive, inclusive, and constructive handover process through a set of meetings, a handover manual, and being there for my successor whenever needed for consultation and advice.

Additionally, and as you might know, there has been an ongoing conversation on the need to start a new position of a Liaison Officer for Exchanges. Through my experience, during the next term, if elected, I will do my best to provide as much evidence and insights as possible to answer the question: does IFMSA need a Liaison Officer for Exchanges? If a consensus was reached, I would take the responsibility of initializing the Separation process into two independent positions, namely the Liaison Officer for Medical Education Issues and the Liaison Officer for Exchanges through two handover processes and two handover manuals under the supervision and guidance of the Vice President for External Affairs and the IFMSA Executive Board.
