t’s that time once again, and in your hands is the “Special Election Edition” of Michigan Merit. The 2018 election is quickly approaching, and it’s a big one. Not only will we be electing leaders at the national and state level, but these elections will have a significant impact on the success of the merit shop in Michigan and across the country.

The Michigan Senate will see significant changes, where two-thirds of the members are term-limited. This race is especially important because the Senate candidates winning office will serve through 2022 and could be influential in Michigan’s redistricting process. In fact, the race for Michigan Senate was identified as one of 21 battleground chambers in the country due to its competitive nature, the likelihood of shifts in party control, and the number if term-limited members. The race for Michigan House of Representatives was also identified as one of 21 battleground chambers in the country due to its competitive nature, the likelihood of shifts in party control, the 2016 election results, and the number of seats being vacated due to term limits and representatives running for higher office. Other seats up for election this year include races for the Governor, U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, Secretary of State, Attorney General, and the Michigan State Supreme Court. Through the efforts of ABC of Michigan and our members, legislation has been enacted that has allowed the construction industry in Michigan to grow and excel. From making Michigan a right-to-work state to repealing the antiquated prevailing wage law, ABC of Michigan has made an impact on Michigan’s economy that will be felt for years to come. But the efforts don’t stop here. To maintain merit shop success throughout the state of Michigan, we must defend and support those who believe in free enterprise and open competition. This is why ABC of Michigan has made it a top priority to engage many of the candidates who will be running for open seats and educate them on the merit shop philosophy ABC prides itself on upholding. Voter’s Guide ATTORNEY GENERAL BILL SCHUETTE is the only Attorney General
in Michigan’s history to have served in all three branches of the state government. His political journey began in 1985 when he was first elected to the United States House of Representative where he served until 1991. In 1990, Schuette was appointed to be the Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture by Former Michigan Governor John Engler. Schuette then went on to serve the citizens of the 35th District in the Michigan State Senate from 1994 to 2002 before he was elected as a judge for Michigan’s Fourth District Court of Appeals; he held this position for seven years between the years of 2002 and 2009. In 2010, Bill Schuette assumed his current position as Michigan Attorney General. Attorney General Bill Schuette is term-limited and is now vying for the position as the Governor of Michigan.

If elected, Schuette plans to create more jobs and bigger paychecks in order to make Michigan a growth state, a paycheck state, and a jobs state. To achieve this, he will cut taxes to allow Michigan families to keep more of their hard-earned money. Not only does Schuette have plans to fix the states broken economy, but he has a proven record of delivering results. Throughout his time in the many public offices he has successfully fought against tax increases, successfully impeded the Obama Administration from levying job-killing regulations on Michigan’s economy, and led the initiative to terminate pensions, which were taxpayer funded, for thirteen Detroit principals who were caught embezzling millions. This is a big year for Associated Builders & Contractors of Michigan and its members, and now more than ever, it is pertinent that Michigan remains merit shop friendly in each of the three branches of the state government. Attorney General Bill Schuette is a strong defender of the Merit Shop philosophy. He supports right to work legislation and the recent repeal of Michigan’s Prevailing Wage law and prides himself on free market principles. Bill Schuette is the right choice for Michigan and ensuring we do not enter another lost decade.

SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE TOM LEONARD is running for Attorney General of Michigan. Currently he represents the people of the 93rd District in the Michigan State House of Representatives. Leonard began his career after receiving his bachelors from the University of Michigan and his Juris Doctorate from Michigan State University in the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office. He then went on to become an assistant Attorney General for former Attorney General Mike Cox until 2012. In 2013, Leonard was elected to represent the citizens of the 93rd District in the state House. During his time in the state legislature, Leonard served on the House Leadership Team as the Majority Caucus Vice Chair, the Vice Chair, and later Chair of the House Insurance Committee, and Speaker Pro-Tempore. As Speaker of the House, Representative Leonard listed mental health reform, reforming the state’s underwater teacher pension fund, and expanding skilled trades education in Michigan schools as his top priorities. This, coupled with his support for the repeal of Michigan’s Prevailing Wage Law, demonstrates Leonard’s dedication to the Merit Shop. ABC of Michigan has recognized this dedication by acknowledging him as a True Champion of the merit shop and Defender of Freedom and presenting him with the Lawmaker of the Year Award.

Justice Clement was appointed in November 2017 to complete the term of Justice Joan Larsen who was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals. MICHIGAN SENATE SPOTLIGHT RACES CHRIS AFENDOULIS District 29 STATE REPRESENTATIVE CHRIS AFENDOULIS is hoping to represent the citizens of the city of East Grand Rapids and Cannon, Courtland, Nelson, Oakfield, Plainfield, Spencer, and Grand Rapids Charter townships. Afendoulis first took public office in 2004 after being elected Grand Rapids Township trustee. In 2007, he was appointed to be the township treasurer. Mr. Afendoulis is now running for the state Senate in the 29th District in the state House of Representatives after serving two terms. He, his wife Phyllis, and their three daughters are very involved in their community, and Mr. Afendoulis is an active, lifelong member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Grand Rapids. “Chris believes in the overarching principle of ‘free markets and free people’ and respect for the rule of law and property rights. WHY CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES NEED TO HIRE WOMEN

T
he construction industry is floundering. Despite construction spending peaking at $1 trillion in November 2017, companies are unable to meet the high demand because they don’t have enough workers. Another challenge is that the demographics of the client population are evolving and becoming more diverse, which means traditional, homogenous companies in the industry need to evolve as well to adequately address their clients’ needs. However, one fix might hammer down the success of the industry: hiring more women. AN INFLUX OF FEMALE WORKERS WOULD MEET THE INDUSTRY’S DEMAND The United States is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage—employers are having difficulty recruiting for the record-high number of 6.7 million jobs are available, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports—and construction is one of the industries that’s suffering the most. More than 90 percent of contractors have been concerned over labor shortages for four consecutive quarters, according to the Q2 2018 USG Corporation + U.S. Chamber of Commerce Commercial Construction Index (Index). Companies can remedy this issue 20
by recruiting women, who only make up 9 percent of construction workers, according to 2016 data from the BLS. Women have much more to offer than just simply adding to a company’s headcount. Here are why women are the future of the construction industry. COMPANIES’ CLIENT POOLS WILL GROW By increasing the number of women on construction teams, companies will be positioned to generate more business because they’ll attract female clients who feel more at ease with a female client contact. In addition, women in skilled trades have been found to be excellent multi-taskers, highly organized and have a more even-temperament than their male counterparts. That not only attracts more female clientele but also can be better for business as a whole. Employing women will be especially lucrative since single women now make up a significant portion of home buyers, according to a 2017 report from the National Association of Realtors: More than twice as many single women are buying homes as single men are (18 percent versus 7 percent)—the largest group of home buyers after married couples (65 percent). That

number is only expected to grow in the coming years since the United State has more single people than ever before: In 2012, one in five Americans ages 25 and older had never been married, compared to one in 10 adults in 1960, the Pew Research Center reported. Furthermore, in 2016, 110.6 million Americans ages 18 and older were unmarried, and 53.2 percent of them were women, according to the Census Bureau. In short, to stay viable, construction companies need to learn to cater to the female population—and a surefire way to do that is to employ women. GENDER-INCLUSIVE TEAMS INSPIRE INNOVATION FOR DIVERSE CLIENT POPULATIONS Women bring a fresh point of view to construction ideas and building plans, enabling a company to serve a wider population. The industry’s client base is becoming increasingly more diverse, so future buildings have to be useful for diverse people as well. Gender-inclusive construction teams will have an easier time discerning those needs. One example of how female input would have been extremely advantageous is in the design and construction of Broadway theaters in New York City. In February 2017, The New York Times published an article on the inhumanely long lines to the women’s restroom in theaters during intermission, while nearly no line existed for the men’s restroom. Theaters have introduced methods of crowd control, and some are even considering renovation to expand women’s restrooms—but if women had been consulted in the construction of the theaters a century ago, would the bathroom conundrum exist now? Likely not. WOMEN GET THE JOB DONE—WELL Yes, women bring a different set of skills to construction than men do—but they also often outperform men as skilled workers. In recent years, more women have
been enrolling in construction courses, according to Sourceable, and they often do better than their male counterparts. And although society has considered men to have a natural aptitude for construction, studies show that women are just as capable when it comes to spatial perception, manual dexterity, mathematical calculations and computer literacy, among other skills. ABC IN MICHIGAN CHAPTERS LEADING THE WAY To help attract women to the construction industry in Michigan, the chapter members of ABC of Michigan continue making efforts to educate women across the state about the opportunities available in a career in construction. The Greater Michigan chapter recently opened the Greater Michigan Construction Academy Tool Library in the Midland area, which provides free and easy access to tools for women. By providing everything from gloves and hand tools to a variety of saws and howto guides, women in the area will have the opportunity to learn or hone their trade skills! The ABC Southeast Michigan chapter is also encouraging women to join skilled trades by hosting an event for women to learn how to weld. ABC SEMI partnered with Women Who Weld, a non-profit, to host the “Women Who Weld’ Intro to MIG Welding Workshop at ABC.” This event teaches women to weld and helps them to find employment in the welding industry.
