The Limits of Growth A little story of huge plants

As the plants grew bigger and stronger we all made the same jokes: “We’re ruled by cabbages!” “Finally someone in power with a brain.” We greeted each other with “All power to the vegetables.” and so on. 6

But when we weren’t laughing about the absurdity of it all, we asked ourselves: “How did we ever got to the point where we were ruled by plants?”

7

Oh, we know exactly how it happened... Researchers took growth genes and planted them into sunflowers. The theory was, the bigger the plant, the more CO2 the plant could absorb. 8

9

However, the product worked. Giant sunflowers were growing everywhere. The companies decided to expand the product line. The supermarkets were flooded by new products. Grapes were as big as the size of watermelons. Families ate a whole week from a single potato. 10

They kept evolving, and soon new giant plants were planted all over the world. Naturally, the greed of the the industry was bigger, and so the plants.

The news told about killings by falling raspberries. The plants not only grew bigger and bigger but also passed the mutations on to every plant. They started to fight against us. Freshly mowed lawn in front of a house went on the next day, to a wall of reeds, with no way through. 14

The plants on our earth followed the laws described by Darwin but with fantastic speed. Life in fast motion. Plants went through the cycle of birth and death, reproduction and adaptation in just a few hours.

15

Within six months, the entire world economy collapsed. The government declared a state of emergency. Of course, people tried first to fight the plants, but they were now so massive and growing so fast that we had no chance.

Now, ten years later, the world has oxygen, is rich, and healthy. Nobody worries anymore about climate change.

A beautiful world. But without humans, as we lost our place. We fled into space.
