As the 2022 edition of abcMallorca Home and Decor reaches completion, I again find myself in awe of all the incredible talent we are blessed with on the island. While Mallorca has long had a reputation for attracting creative souls from all over the world, the quality that we have living and working here today continues to shine more brightly than ever. Homegrown talent too is thriving. And the proof can be found between these pages.

In this issue, we speak to a range of artists, artisans and designers, who share their unique voice and inspiration with us. An interview with Mallorca native Elena Gual, one of the most interesting new painters on the island, on page 72 reveals the challenges she overcame to become an artist. On page 92 we meet Lucas Riso, an Argentine artisan who draws from the

Protecting your financial security through retirement

Are you planning on enjoying your retirement years on Mallorca?

Retirement can last 30 years or more, which would give you plenty of time to make the most of living on this beautiful island.

To help us enjoy these well-earned years and have peace of mind, we all need to plan ahead, build up our savings and then protect them for our long-term future.

While the earlier we start doing this in our careers the better, it gets more important the closer we get to retirement. And we need to continue taking steps to protect our retirement savings even after we’ve started drawing our pensions, regularly reviewing our arrangements to ensure we continue meeting our retirement goals.

Planning ahead for retirement

As retirement begins to get closer, it is time to decide how you want to spend your golden years and ensure you are on the right track financially. There may be steps you can take today to help make your retirement goal a reality.

Consider all the following points

• Will you be able to afford to retire when you want to?

• What is the best strategy for withdrawing from employment?

• Or, if you have a business, what is the best strategy for selling it?

• What options are available for your pensions? Will being resident in Spain provide any new opportunities?

• Will you be able to retain your existing wealth and assets?

• Do you want to spend some or all of your retirement abroad?

Let’s say that you plan to retire within the next few years and move permanently to Mallorca. You may have concerns about whether you can afford your preferred lifestyle without having to sell existing assets. Perhaps you have a business to sell and are unsure how best to convert your years of hard work into a retirement nest egg. Then there are the complex residence and tax implications of living in a different country.

Professional financial advice can prove invaluable here, especially with an adviser who understands Spain and can provide crossborder advice covering both countries. A good adviser will take a holistic view of what you have – your savings, investments, assets, pensions – together with what you want – your income requirements, estate planning wishes – and an objective assessment of who you are – your circumstances, timeline, goals, risk appetite – to design a personalised retirement plan for you.

Once you are retired

Being retired does not mean you can forget about retirement planning.

Regular reviews allow you to adapt your strategy to suit your changing circumstances and goals, such as incorporating new family members, addressing health issues or relocating. It enables you to keep up with the ever-changing tax and pensions landscape, including new opportunities that could work in your favour.

You also need to keep protecting your savings and retirement income from inflation. As the cost of living rising, the value of your money falls, so that in the long-term you could have considerably less spending power than you have today. While today’s current high inflation is likely to subside over the couple of years, you should always take steps to protect your savings – even low inflation can have a big impact when compounded year after year over the long-term.

Your pension options

Pensions are usually the foundation of retirement, so deciding what to do here may be one of life’s most important financial decisions. Pensions are complex, and with so much choice available, you must take great care. Review all the options available to you as an expatriate and weigh up which is most suitable for you and your objectives.

For example, UK nationals might benefit from consolidating several UK pensions into one to provide a coherent, more cost-effective investment platform for your retirement income.

Some British expatriates have benefited from transferring UK pensions to an EU Qualifying Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS), which can provide flexibility to take income in euros, more freedom to pass benefits to chosen heirs, and protection from further UK lifetime allowance charges - but you also need to consider the tax implications in Spain.

Pension rules frequently change so the appropriate solution today may be slightly different tomorrow. The important thing is to take regulated, specialist advice before making pension decisions to protect your benefits. If you are not yet Spanish tax resident, there may be tax benefits to seeking advice before you become one.

Keep an eye on the UK’s lifetime allowance (LTA). The UK caps how much you can hold in combined pension benefits (excluding State Pension) without paying extra tax. Once your funds exceed the limit, you pay a tax charge whenever you access your money – 55% for lump sums or 25% for income or transfers to an overseas pension. This also applies to non-UK residents.

Retiring in Mallorca

If you plan to retire in Spain, review your retirement strategy early. You need to consider your residence status and cross-border tax implications and adapt your estate planning to suit Spain’s different succession rules.

Careful planning is the key to minimising taxation and maximising the available opportunities so you can enjoy your dream retirement for as long as you need. For the best results, take specialist, crossborder advice.

Renowned architects studio Palomino Arquitectos have moved into their new headquarters in the coastal neighbourhood of Bendinat. The aim was to help “free the minds of our team,” explains Enzo Belmonte Galván, Managing Director, “and to help ‘design the dreams of our clients.” The functional design is based on open lines and spaces to favour fluid communication between the different colleagues. At the same time, it allows the option of being able to work individually or in small work groups in the different rooms. They also took the opportunity to create a more sustainable office to raise environmental awareness among team members, clients and partners.

El reconocido estudio de arquitectos Palomino Arquitectos ha mudado su sede en el barrio costero de Bendinat. El objetivo era ayudar a “liberar las mentes de nuestro equipo”, explica Enzo Belmonte Galván, director general, “y ayudar a ‘diseñar los sueños’ de nuestros clientes”.  El diseño funcional se basa en líneas y espacios abiertos para favorecer la comunicación fluida entre los distintos compañeros. Al mismo tiempo, permite la opción de poder trabajar individualmente o en pequeños grupos de trabajo en las diferentes salas. This summer, a new art gallery, advisory and atelier opened its doors in Palma’s old town steps from Sant Francesc Square. Zacobian aims to harness creative talent, both on the island and internationally, and facilitate the connection between artists and art collectors. For select artists, they also provide a small studio space in the front of their showroom where the artist can create and develop an offering of work. “Our mission is to help propel both collector portfolios and artist careers to new heights,” explains Zacobian director, Corine Couwenberg.

While Palma boasts a past rich in Moorish history, the first hotel to directly take inspiration from a Moroccan riad officially opened just this year. The atmospheric five-star hotel is located on one of the city’s oldest streets, Calle Sant Jaume. Its 11 suites are sumptuously and individually designed, with hammam-style bathrooms and big soaking tubs. It also features an exciting new addition to Palma’s dining scene with the Morokko Restaurant and cocktail bar, run in collaboration with the Mallorcan restaurant group Tast. Founded in 1879, Relojería Alemana has reopened its Calle Colon branch after extensive remodelling carried out by Palma-based Ohlab architecture studio. Taking several months, the renovation project divided the luxury brand watch store into three floors, each with a distinctive purpose and concept. Ohlab opted for materials and textures that combine modernity, innovation and design, to bring “spaciousness, light and originality” to each of its corners. The makeover also added bar areas and a cocktail menu created in collaboration with Rafa Martín, an award-winning barman at Palma cocktail bar BrassClub.

Fundada en 1879, Relojería Alemana ha reabierto su sucursal de la calle Colón tras una amplia remodelación llevada a cabo por el estudio de arquitectura Ohlab, con sede en Palma. El proyecto de renovación, que ha durado varios meses, ha dividido la relojería de la marca de lujo en tres plantas, cada una de ellas con una finalidad y un concepto distintos. Ohlab optó por materiales y texturas que combinan modernidad, innovación y diseño, para aportar “amplitud, luz y originalidad” a cada uno de sus rincones. Das Renovierungsprojekt dauerte mehrere Monate und teilte das Geschäft für Luxusuhren in drei Etagen auf, von denen jede einen eigenen Zweck und ein eigenes Konzept hat. Joan Ignaci Bibiloni is a young Mallorcan architect with great ambition. Alongside German-born partner, Oliver Borries, he founded the exciting Palma studio, OIB Architecture. “We go beyond Mallorca,” says Bibiloni. “We have clients in Marbella, in destination cities like Berlin, and as far afield as Singapore and Chile.”

Catalonia is a region famed for creative and industrious architects, a tradition that Bibiloni, who trained at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Reus, is steeped in. “I work hard, not just to craft exciting designs, but to make them a reality.”

Bibiloni does not limit himself to everyday projects. “I want my work to make a deep impression; even inspire people.” OIB has put its innovative stamp on the likes of the Portals Hills Boutique Hotel and the Cal Reiet Holistic Retreat; diverse commissions that demonstrate, that whether the goal is rustic glory or cutting-edge luxury, OIB is up to the task. Thick shrubby grass crowns the roof. “It’s a project I’m particularly proud of,” says Bibiloni. “It demonstrates our independence of spirit.” Love of homeland helps him understand the vision many clients have for their island properties. “Mallorca offers a life of plenty,” says the youthful architect. “By that, I mean plenty of peace and leisure time spent with the people we care about. It means evenings spent with loved ones on the terrace, enjoying a fantastic sea view and a smashing bottle of Mallorcan red.” In realising their clients’ dreams, Bibiloni and Borries draw on the varied expertise of talented staff, encompassing interior design and project financing departments. “They are very dedicated. Like the natural wines they sell, a ‘less-is-more’ philosophy is reflected in the stripped-down look at CAV. Glazed bottle-green tiles, handmade stools and a raw pine counter are all it takes to make the space special.

With 44 luxury hotels scattered around Europe, some may wonder why it took this long for IHG Hotels & Resorts plant their first flag on Mallorca. But from what we know about their new opening Kimpton Aysla –which is due to welcome its first guests this September – it’s looking to be an impressive addition to the island’s portfolio of luxurylevel hotels.

An extensive renovation and redevelopment project has encompassed the former Santa Ponsa Country Club, which closed its doors way back in 2014. The project involved a complete overhaul of the existing social and sports complex, together with a new tennis club and, in the final phase, construction of the five-star hotel itself.

Pero por lo que sabemos de su nueva apertura, el Kimpton Aysla, que dará la bienvenida a sus primeros huéspedes este septiembre, parece ser una impresionante adición a la cartera de hoteles de lujo de la isla. El antiguo Santa Ponsa Country Club, que cerró sus puertas en 2014, ha sido objeto de un amplio proyecto de renovación y remodelación. El proyecto supuso una revisión completa del complejo social y deportivo existente, junto con un nuevo club de tenis y, en la fase final, la construcción del propio hotel de cinco estrellas.

Aber nach dem, was wir über das neu eröffnete Kimpton Aysla wissen - das im September seine ersten Gäste begrüßen soll - scheint es eine beeindruckende Ergänzung des Portfolios an Luxushotels auf der Insel zu sein.

Der ehemalige Santa Ponsa Country Club, der 2014 seine Pforten schloss, wurde im Rahmen eines umfassenden Renovierungs- und Sanierungsprojekts umgebaut. Das Projekt umfasste eine komplette Überholung des bestehenden Freizeit- und Sportkomplexes, einen neuen Tennisclub und in der letzten Phase den Bau des Fünf-Sterne-Hotels selbst.

INSPIRED BY TRADITION AND NATURE

For the design they called on renowned local architect Guillermo Reynés, who drew inspiration from his Mediterranean roots. The new buildings, including the hotel’s 79 rooms, are arranged around a central space, re-interpreting the clastra or courtyard of typical Mallorcan houses. The fresh additions are also connected to the existing building with an underground tunnel and above ground via a footbridge.

“The concept of the rooms is unique,” Guillermo explains, “with each one having a side terrace, instead of a usual front one, creating a secluded exterior space through which the bathroom is ventilated and lit.” This makes for bathrooms with direct access to the terrace, allowing the indoor shower to become an outdoor summer shower – thanks to Mallorca’s climate – for most of the year. Some rooms even open to a private garden.

From the use of natural materials like rattan and wood to bright turquoise accents in the soft furnishings and textiles, decorative elements come together to mimic the hotel’s island surroundings. The Mediterranean gardens too are brimming with native flora and one of the hotel’s two pools echoes Santa Ponsa’s nearby beach (with the second sports pool for laps swimming).

INSPIRADO EN LA TRADICIÓN Y LA NATURALEZA

Para el diseño se recurrió al reconocido arquitecto local Guillermo Reynés, que se inspiró en sus raíces mediterráneas. Los nuevos edificios, incluidas las 79 habitaciones del hotel, se organizan en torno a un espacio central, reinterpretando la clastra o patio de las casas típicas mallorquinas. Además, las nuevas construcciones están conectadas con el edificio existente mediante un túnel subterráneo y por encima del suelo a través de una pasarela. “El concepto de las habitaciones es único”, explica Guillermo, “cada una tiene una terraza lateral, en lugar de la habitual frontal, creando un espacio exterior aislado por el que se ventila e ilumina el baño”. De este modo, los baños tienen acceso directo a la terraza, lo que permite que la ducha interior se convierta en una ducha exterior de verano -gracias al clima de Mallorca- durante la mayor parte del año. Algunas habitaciones se abren incluso a un jardín privado. Desde el uso de materiales naturales como el ratán y la madera hasta los brillantes acentos turquesa en el mobiliario y los textiles, los elementos decorativos se unen para imitar el entorno insular del hotel. Los jardines mediterráneos también están repletos de flora autóctona y una de las dos piscinas del hotel se hace eco de la cercana playa de Santa Ponsa (con la segunda piscina deportiva para hacer largos).

Für den Entwurf wurde der bekannte lokale Architekt Guillermo Reynés herangezogen, der sich von seinen mediterranen Wurzeln inspirieren ließ. Die neuen Gebäude, zu denen auch die 79 Zimmer des Hotels gehören, sind um einen zentralen Raum herum angeordnet, der die Clastra oder den Innenhof der typischen mallorquinischen Häuser neu interpretiert. Die neuen Gebäude sind durch einen unterirdischen Tunnel und über eine Fußgängerbrücke mit dem bestehenden Gebäude verbunden.

„Das Konzept der Zimmer ist einzigartig“, erklärt Guillermo, „jedes Zimmer hat eine Seitenterrasse anstelle der üblichen Frontterrasse, wodurch ein abgelegener Außenbereich entsteht, über den das Bad belüftet und beleuchtet wird.“ Dadurch haben die Badezimmer einen direkten Zugang zur Terrasse, so dass die Innendusche dank des mallorquinischen Klimas die meiste Zeit des Jahres zu einer Sommerdusche im Freien wird. Einige Zimmer haben sogar einen Zugang zu einem eigenen Garten.

Von der Verwendung natürlicher Materialien wie Rattan und Holz bis hin zu leuchtend türkisfarbenen Akzenten in den Polstermöbeln und Textilien - die Dekorationselemente sind der Inselumgebung des Hotels nachempfunden. Auch die mediterranen Gärten sind voller einheimischer Pflanzen, und einer der beiden Pools des Hotels ist dem nahe gelegenen Strand von Santa Ponsa nachempfunden (der zweite ist ein Sportpool, in dem man seine Bahnen schwimmen kann).

WELLNESS AND RECREATION HUB

The hotel will operate under a management agreement with Mallorca Country Club, and being nestled next to Santa Ponsa Golf course means guests will have a wide choice of sports at their fingertips. An extensive spa zone measuring 900-square-metres will also add deluxe pampering potential. “The brief was not just a five-star hotel,” Alejandro Bautista Gómez, the General Manager, told us, “the Kimpton philosophy goes beyond that and, in this particular case, the project also brings a fully equipped members club to the community.”

Karin Sheppard, Managing Director for Europe at IHG, also has high expectations for the hotel: “Now people are able to travel again, they are looking for experiences steeped in meaningful human connection and in destinations rich in culture and natural beauty; both of which will be abundant at Kimpton Aysla.” |

Das Hotel wird im Rahmen eines Managementvertrags mit dem Mallorca Country Club betrieben, und da es direkt neben dem Golfplatz Santa Ponsa liegt, steht den Gästen eine große Auswahl an Sportmöglichkeiten zur Verfügung. Ein weitläufiger Spa-Bereich mit 900 Quadratmetern Fläche bietet zudem Verwöhnmöglichkeiten der Extraklasse. „Die Vorgabe war nicht nur ein Fünf-Sterne-Hotel“, so Alejandro Bautista Gómez, General Manager, „die Kimpton-Philosophie geht darüber hinaus, und in diesem speziellen Fall bringt das Projekt auch einen voll ausgestatteten Members Club in die Gemeinde.“ Karin Sheppard, Managing Director für Europa bei IHG, hat ebenfalls hohe Erwartungen an das Hotel: „Jetzt, wo die Menschen wieder reisen können, suchen sie nach Erlebnissen, bei denen sie mit Menschen in Kontakt kommen und die reich an Kultur und Natur sind - beides wird es im Kimpton Aysla reichlich geben.“ |

Last November, still in her 20s, Mallorcan painter Elena Gual signed exclusively with Palma’s renowned Gallery RED. Gual can stay put while her name crosses the globe. This wasn’t always possible, she says. “Mallorca hosted foreign names, like Graves and Chopin. To make a name, we islanders got away.” Today Palma makes a noise of its own. RED has a strong social media presence and sells worldwide, helped by talent like Gual’s.

Encouraged by her epicurean father, she attended performance classes as a child. At 16 she developed stage fright. Painting “saved” her. An art scholarship took her to England for her final years of school, before she entered the Florence Academy of Art. “I had considered architecture, until I visited the Van Gogh Museum on a family trip to Amsterdam.” It was a Damascene moment. “I said, ‘Mum, Dad, I have to be a painter!’”

Fue un momento damasceno. “Dije: ‘¡Mamá, papá, tengo que ser pintora!’”.

Im vergangenen November unterzeichnete die mallorquinische Malerin Elena Gual, noch in ihren 20ern, einen Exklusivvertrag mit der renommierten Galerie RED in Palma. Während ihr Name die Welt umspannt, bleibt Gual hier.

Das war nicht immer möglich, sagt sie. „Mallorca beherbergte ausländische Namen, wie Graves und Chopin. Um sich bekannt zu machen, mussten wir Inselbewohner losziehen.“ Heute sorgt Palma für einen ganz eigenen Ruf. RED hat eine starke Präsenz in den sozialen Medien und verkauft weltweit, unterstützt durch Talente wie das von Gual. Auf Anregung ihres genussfreudigen Vaters besuchte sie schon als Kind Schauspielkurse. Mit 16 Jahren bekam sie Lampenfieber. Die Malerei „rettete“ sie. Ein Kunststipendium brachte sie für die letzten Schuljahre nach England, bevor sie an der Kunstakademie in Florenz studierte. „Ich hatte Architektur in Erwägung gezogen, bis ich auf einem Familienausflug nach Amsterdam das Van-Gogh-Museum besuchte. Es war ein Damaskus-Moment. „Ich sagte: Mama, Papa, ich muss Malerin werden!“

“The doctor told me to stop but oil painting was all I knew”

AN IMAGINATIVE TECHNIQUE

After four years of classical study, including one in New York, Gual began accepting commissions. Work was steady when, five years ago, she became allergic to the turpentine used for thinning her oil paints. “My hands were inflamed and breathing was difficult. The doctor told me to stop. My life seemed over. Oil painting was all I knew.”

Well, necessity being the mother of invention, she turned to her palette knife, a blunt tool for mixing and applying unthinned paint. Like thick nut butter on bread, Gual spreads earthy tones across the canvas. Her subjects are impressively life-like, with a 3D-quality to boot.

“The technique’s contemporary but my training comes into mixing the tones.” Her method breaks from tradition in other respects. “I prefer working from photographs, although I had the benefit of thousands of live models at the Academy.” Professors weren’t pleased. “I told them if Da Vinci could’ve worked from photos, he would’ve!”

Above all, Gual enjoys being guided by her imagination. “Why copy the past? Rather, play with the present.”

FUERZA FEMENINA

Tras cuatro años de estudios clásicos, incluido uno en Nueva York, Gual empezó a aceptar encargos. El trabajo era constante cuando, hace cinco años, se volvió alérgica a la trementina utilizada para diluir sus óleos. “Se me inflamaban las manos y me costaba respirar. El médico me dijo que lo dejara. Mi vida parecía haber terminado. La pintura al óleo era lo único que conocía”. Como la necesidad es la madre de la invención, recurrió a su espátula, una herramienta para mezclar y aplicar la pintura sin diluir. Como si se tratara de mantequilla espesa sobre el pan, Gual extiende los tonos terrosos sobre el lienzo. Sus temas son impresionantemente reales, con una calidad 3D. “La técnica es contemporánea, pero mi formación entra en la mezcla de los tonos”. Su método rompe con la tradición en otros aspectos. “Prefiero trabajar a partir de fotografías, aunque tuve la ventaja de contar con miles de modelos vivos en la Academia”. Los profesores no estaban contentos. “Les dije que si Da Vinci hubiera podido trabajar a partir de fotos, lo habría hecho”. Por encima de todo, Gual disfruta guiándose por su imaginación. “¿Por qué copiar el pasado? Más bien, jugar con el presente”.

EINE EINFALLSREICHE

TECHNIK

Nach vier Jahren klassischen Studiums, unter anderem in New York, begann Gual, Auftragsarbeiten anzunehmen. Die Arbeit lief gut, bis sie vor fünf Jahren allergisch auf das Terpentin reagierte, das zum Verdünnen ihrer Ölfarben verwendet wurde. „Meine Hände waren entzündet und das Atmen fiel mir schwer. Der Arzt sagte mir, ich solle aufhören. Mein Leben schien vorbei zu sein. Ölmalerei war alles, was ich kannte.“ Da Not bekanntlich erfinderisch macht, griff sie zu ihrem Spachtel, einem stumpfen Werkzeug zum Mischen und Auftragen unverdünnter Farbe. Wie dicke Nussbutter auf Brot verteilt Gual erdige Töne auf der Leinwand. Ihre Motive sind beeindruckend lebensecht und haben obendrein eine 3D-Qualität.

„Die Technik ist zeitgenössisch, doch meine Ausbildung fließt in das Mischen der Töne ein.“ Ihre Methode bricht auch in anderer Hinsicht mit der Tradition. „Ich ziehe es vor, nach Fotos zu arbeiten, obwohl ich an der Akademie in den Genuss von Tausenden von lebenden Modellen gekommen bin. Die Professoren waren nicht erfreut. „Ich habe ihnen gesagt, wenn Da Vinci mit Fotos hätte arbeiten können, hätte er es getan!“ Gual genießt es vor allem, sich von ihrer Fantasie leiten zu lassen. „Warum die Vergangenheit kopieren? Man sollte lieber mit der Gegenwart spielen.“

FEMININE STRENGTH

Predominantly if not exclusively, her subjects are women from across the world. “I’ve travelled widely and worked in an Indian orphanage with 600 people there. What struck me was the strength of the women, themselves outcasts, caring for the children.”

We take a tour of her earlier works in RED’s elegant reserve gallery. These women, so alive within their frames, seem poised to speak. What would they say? “I’m here to make the world a better place,” the young artist offers thoughtfully.

The female body comes into focus. “I’ve thought a lot about how female nudity is sexualised. Occasionally there’s a lack of sensitivity around the subject. I want to bring out the elegance inherent in all of our bodies.”

Here I spot something on the back of her phone, a sticker. One of her paintings? She laughs. “With time I’ve learnt to take pride in my work.” Perhaps her stage fright is dissipating. |

UNA TÉCNICA IMAGINATIVA

Sus temas son predominantemente, si no exclusivamente, mujeres de todo el mundo. “He viajado mucho y he trabajado en un orfanato indio con 600 personas. Lo que me impresionó fue la fuerza de las mujeres, ellas mismas marginadas, que cuidaban de los niños”.

Hacemos un recorrido por sus primeras obras en la elegante reserva de Gallery RED. Estas mujeres, tan vivas dentro de sus marcos, parecen dispuestas a hablar. ¿Qué dirían? “Estoy aquí para hacer del mundo un lugar mejor”, dice la joven artista.

Un hombre empaqueta sus últimas obras para una exposición en Nueva York. abcMallorca consigue un adelanto. Los rostros están oscurecidos, o fuera de cuadro. El cuerpo femenino sale a la luz. “He pensado mucho en como se ha sexualizado el desnudo de la mujer y la falta de sensibilidad que a veces se ha mostrado, tengo muchas ganas de enseñar una pintura enfocada en esa elegancia e igualdad entre todos nuestros cuerpos” . En ese momento veo algo en la parte trasera de su teléfono, una pegatina. ¿Una de sus pinturas? Se ríe. “Con el tiempo he aprendido a estar orgullosa de mi trabajo”. Quizás su miedo escénico se esté disipando. |

FEMININE STÄRKE

Ihre Themen sind überwiegend, wenn auch nicht ausschließlich, Frauen aus aller Welt. „Ich bin viel gereist und habe in einem indischen Waisenhaus mit 600 Menschen gearbeitet. Was mich beeindruckt hat, war die Stärke der Frauen, die selbst zu den Ausgestoßenen gehören und sich um die Kinder kümmern.

Wir machen einen Rundgang durch ihre früheren Werke in der eleganten ReserveGalerie von RED. Diese Frauen, die so lebendig in ihren Bildern wirken, scheinen zu sprechen. Was würden sie sagen? „Ich bin hier, um die Welt zu einem besseren Ort zu machen“, sagt die junge Künstlerin nachdenklich.

Ein Mann packt ihre neuesten Werke für eine Ausstellung in New York ein. abcMallorca kann einen Blick darauf werfen. Die Gesichter sind unkenntlich gemacht oder verschwinden aus dem Bild. Der weibliche Körper rückt in den Fokus. „Ich habe viel darüber nachgedacht, wie weibliche Nacktheit sexualisiert wird. Gelegentlich fehlt es an Sensibilität für dieses Thema. Dabei möchte ich die Eleganz hervorheben, die jedem unserer Körper innewohnt.“

Hier entdecke ich etwas auf der Rückseite ihres Telefons, einen Aufkleber. Eines ihrer Bilder? Sie lacht. „Mit der Zeit habe ich gelernt, auf meine Arbeit stolz zu sein.“

Any Mallorcan project in need of expert metal-work can count on the exceptional services of Pradas Art, master blacksmiths since 1954. “We’re a third-generation business,” says Gumer who, with his brother, Toni, heads the family forge in Son Castelló. The blacksmiths design and craft everything from door grilles, coffee tables, staircases and glasshouses to art installations. They get commissions from across the world and yet you won’t find them on Instagram or Facebook.

The Pradas secret? Gumer is only too glad to reveal: “We work with a talented and highly trained team. Some began their career with our father, Bonifacio, and even our late grandfather, Gumersindo. Like us, they grew up in the forge.” Bonifacio is retired, but Gumer and Toni’s devoted mother, Marita, still keeps the books.

Cualquier proyecto mallorquín que necesite un trabajo experto en metal puede contar con los excepcionales servicios de Pradas Art, maestros herreros desde 1954. “Somos un negocio de tercera generación”, dice Gumer que, junto a su hermano Toni, dirige la herrería familiar en Son Castelló. Los herreros diseñan y elaboran todo tipo de productos, desde rejas para puertas, mesas de café, escaleras e invernaderos hasta instalaciones artísticas. Reciben encargos de todo el mundo y, sin embargo, no los encontrarás en Instagram o Facebook. ¿El secreto de Pradas? Gumer lo revela con mucho gusto: “Trabajamos con un equipo talentoso y muy capacitado. Algunos comenzaron su carrera con nuestro padre, Bonifacio, e incluso con nuestro difunto abuelo, Gumersindo. Como nosotros, crecieron entre el fuego y la forja”. Bonifacio está jubilado, pero la dedicada madre de Gumer y Toni, Marita, sigue llevando la administración.

Die Schmiede entwerfen und fertigen alles von Türgittern, Couchtischen, Treppen und Gewächshäusern bis hin zu Kunstinstallationen. Sie erhalten Aufträge aus der ganzen Welt und sind dennoch nicht auf Instagram oder Facebook zu finden.

Das Geheimnis von Pradas? Gumer verrät es nur zu gerne: „Wir arbeiten mit einem talentierten und gut ausgebildeten Team. Einige begannen ihre Karriere bei unserem Vater Bonifacio und sogar bei unserem verstorbenen Großvater Gumersindo. Sie sind wie wir in der Schmiede aufgewachsen”. Bonifacio ist im Ruhestand, aber Gumer und Tonis hingebungsvolle Mutter, Marita, führt immer noch die Bücher.

“It’s not just the team who are family, but our customers too. Some have been coming to us for decades, don Antonio for example.” Gumer is referring to award-winning architects’ studio Antonio Obrador who, at the beginning of his career, took advice from Gumersindo on ornamental work. The studio went on to collaborate with Bonifacio, so that Gumer and Toni learnt their trade working on his celebrated projects. Business comes through word of mouth. “We have no social media. Why would we? Our customers are loyal and the best advertisement for our business. Perhaps they first engage us to repair an antique fence. Then we’re asked back to create a bespoke coffee table. In the end, we’re helping build an extension to their house!”

El estudio pasó a colaborar con Bonifacio, de modo que Gumer y Toni aprendieron su oficio trabajando en sus célebres proyectos. El negocio llega a través del boca a boca. “No tenemos redes sociales. ¿Por qué íbamos a tenerlas? Nuestros clientes son fieles y son nuestra mejor publicidad. Quizá nos contraten primero para reparar una valla antigua. Luego nos piden que volvamos a crear una mesa de café a medida. Al final, les ayudamos a construir una ampliación de su casa”.

Und am Ende helfen wir ihnen, einen Anbau an ihr Haus zu bauen!”

Pradas‘ zufriedene Kunden sind eine Mischung aus Mallorquinern und Ausländern, die nicht nur auf der Insel zu finden sind. „Wir bekommen viele Aufträge aus dem Ausland,

Top hotels have come calling. A particularly impressive Pradas project is a conservatory built in classic Parisian style at the luxury Finca Serena resort. The brothers have worked with acclaimed artists, such as Pedro Cabrita Reis, one of Portugal’s most famous. Reis’ collaboration with Pradas, Fallen and Standing, was exhibited at Palma’s Galería Kewenig in 2016.

Gumer’s passion for his trade is red hot. “I love research, so when we were asked to create a canopy for entrance to the Hotel Majestic in Barcelona in a style inspired by nearby Gaudí buildings, we were delighted to work together on it. Matching traditional styles with modern techniques—that’s our hallmark.” The brothers’ long-standing customer and friend, Obrador once told them, “Your grandfather would be proud.” Mallorca can be too. |

Los felices clientes de Pradas son una mezcla de mallorquines y de distintas nacionalidades, y no sólo se encuentran en la isla. “Recibimos muchos encargos únicos del extranjero, como Noruega y Suiza, donde nuestros clientes nos han solicitado piezas únicas por nuestra calidad y artesanía”. Los mejores hoteles han acudido a la llamada. Un proyecto de Pradas especialmente impresionante es un invernadero construido en estilo clásico parisino en el lujoso complejo turístico Finca Serena. Los hermanos han trabajado con artistas aclamados, como Pedro Cabrita Reis, uno de los más famosos de Portugal. La colaboración de Reis con Pradas, Fallen and Standing, se expuso en la Galería Kewenig de Palma en 2016.

La pasión de Gumer por su oficio está al rojo vivo. “Me encanta la investigación, así que cuando nos pidieron que creáramos una marquesina de la puerta principal para el Hotel Majestic de Barcelona con un estilo inspirado en los edificios cercanos de Gaudí, estuve encantado de poder realizarlo junto con mi padre y mi hermano. “We were both seeking a deeper connection with our work,” Wiktoria Ginter explains as she shares the genesis of interior design company in alcova. Wiktoria and her business partner Anna Yancheva first forged a bond when they were studying architecture together in Venice. Post-studies they went their separate ways – Wiktoria to Milan and Anna to Copenhagen – where they worked in architecture studios and immersed themselves in the respective schools of Italian and Scandinavian design.

FRIENDS REUNITED

A few years passed and eventually, they both found themselves looking for a change. Anna realised that, although she was working on exciting big-scale projects, she was “more into the detail, and interested in how you make a building into a home.”

Despite landing a job with a top Mallorcan architectural firm, Wiktoria longed for her own studio where she could feel more

AMIGAS REUNIDAS

Pasaron algunos años y ambas buscaron un cambio. Anna se dio cuenta de que, aunque trabajaba en apasionantes proyectos de gran envergadura, a ella le interesaba “más el detalle y cómo convertir un edificio en un hogar”. A pesar de haber conseguido un puesto de trabajo en un importante estudio de arquitectura mallorquín, Wiktoria

„Wir waren beide auf der Suche nach einer tieferen Verbindung zu unserer Arbeit“, erklärt Wiktoria Ginter die Entstehungsgeschichte des Innenarchitekturbüros in alcova. Wiktoria und ihre Geschäftspartnerin Anna Yancheva lernten sich kennen, als sie gemeinsam in Venedig Architektur studierten. Nach dem Studium trennten sich ihre Wege - Wiktoria ging nach Mailand und Anna nach Kopenhagen - wo sie in Architekturbüros arbeiteten und in die jeweiligen Schulen des italienischen und skandinavischen Designs eintauchten.

FREUNDE WIEDER VEREINT Es vergingen einige Jahre, und schließlich suchten beide nach einer Veränderung. Anna erkannte, dass sie zwar an aufregenden Großprojekten arbeitete, sich aber „mehr für die Details interessierte und dafür, wie man ein Gebäude in ein Zuhause verwandelt.“

Wiktoria, a Polish national, had also found herself in Mallorca quite by chance. “I never really planned it,” she recalls, “but soon after arriving here it felt like home.” Anna had since returned to her native Bulgaria but didn’t need much convincing to join her old friend on the island, and soon in alcova was born.

The choice of name is the first clue to their ethos, the ‘alcova’ being the Italian word for the most comfortable and intimate room in the home, an inner sanctum where you feel most at peace. Wiktoria had also just completed yoga instructor training and wanted to weave something with a similar spiritual quality into their design philosophy.

“Contrary to the world of architecture, which is often about the architect’s ego first, we don’t want to project ourselves onto the project,” explains Anna, “this is completely about creating the client’s perfect space from a holistic approach.”

Anna había regresado a su Bulgaria natal, pero no necesitó mucho para convencerla de que se uniera a su vieja amiga en la isla, y pronto nació in alcova.

La elección del nombre es la primera pista de su espíritu, ya que “alcova” es la palabra italiana que designa la habitación más cómoda e íntima de la casa, un santuario interior donde uno se siente más en paz.

Wiktoria acababa de terminar su formación como instructora de yoga y quería incorporar a su filosofía de diseño una cualidad espiritual similar. “Al contrario de lo que ocurre en el mundo de la arquitectura, que a menudo tiene que ver con el ego del arquitecto en primer lugar, no queremos proyectarnos en el proyecto”, explica Anna, “se trata de crear el espacio perfecto para el cliente desde un enfoque holístico”.

Auch Wiktoria, eine Polin, war eher zufällig auf Mallorca gelandet. „Ich hatte es nie wirklich geplant“, erinnert sie sich, „ aber kurz nachdem ich hier angekommen war, fühlte ich mich wie zu Hause.“ Anna war inzwischen in ihre bulgarische Heimat zurückgekehrt, aber es bedurfte keiner großen Überredungskunst, um sich ihrer alten Freundin auf der Insel anzuschließen, und so war in alcova geboren.

Die Wahl des Namens ist der erste Hinweis auf ihr Ethos: „alcova“ ist das italienische Wort für den gemütlichsten und intimsten Raum im Haus, ein inneres Heiligtum, in dem man sich am wohlsten fühlt. Wiktoria hatte gerade eine Ausbildung zur Yogalehrerin abgeschlossen und wollte etwas mit einer ähnlichen spirituellen Qualität in ihre Designphilosophie einfließen lassen. „Im Gegensatz zur Welt der Architektur, in der es oft in erster Linie um das Ego des Architekten geht, wollen wir uns nicht auf das Projekt projizieren“, erklärt Anna, „hier geht es ausschließlich darum, den perfekten Raum für den Kunden aus einem ganzheitlichen Ansatz heraus zu schaffen.“

ARTISTS AND ARTISANS

Looking over their completed works, the almost monastic simplicity of their approach has a Zen-like quality that fosters calm and stillness. They also ensure these meditative spaces have a strong connection with the island, tapping into Mallorca’s rich vein of design and artistic talent. The likes of countertops, stone sinks and cabinets will be custom-made by local artisans, while furnishings will be sourced from island-based studios such as Jaia and Contain. A recent project incorporated decor by Mallorcan artist Diego Sánchez Barceló.

“I’m fascinated by the psychology of the space,” Anna adds, and the “exploration of the relationship between the physical and the spiritual” is the heart of what they do. This is ultimately to create homes that improve the lives of those who inhabit them. With the island increasingly becoming a magnet for those seeking wellness and well-being, both spiritual and psychological, the spaces we choose to create around ourselves can have a hugely positive impact. For Mallorcan interior designer Maria Antònia, work means bringing home the soul, and bringing the soul home. “My husband is from Barcelona and has a background in hospitality. We were working in London when, in 2013, the time came to start a family. We decided on a move to my home island and opened ConAlmaDesign” In starting anew the couple sought inspiration from the world around them. “We asked ourselves, ‘how can we combine our skills and draw on each other’s rich work experience?’” Artisan kitchenware was the answer, with an emphasis on chopping and presentation boards.

Naturally, Maria Antònia and Álvaro’s surroundings came to inspire the design of their new range. The couple created the wooden components. The colourful tiles, meanwhile, which are a particularly attractive feature of ConAlma’s range, are made in collaboration with a Mallorcan craftswoman. The tilemaker’s knowledge of ancient techniques complements Maria Antònia’s appreciation for contemporary aesthetics and Álvaro’s imaginative streak.

Al empezar de nuevo, la pareja buscó inspiración en el mundo que les rodeaba. “Nos preguntamos: ‘¿cómo podemos combinar nuestras habilidades y aprovechar la experiencia laboral de cada uno?”. La respuesta fue el menaje de cocina artesanal, con énfasis en las tablas de cortar y presentar.

Naturalmente, el entorno de Maria Antònia y Álvaro vino a inspirar el diseño de su nueva marca. La pareja creó los componentes de madera. Por su parte, los coloridos azulejos, que son un elemento especialmente atractivo de los productos de ConAlma, se fabrican en colaboración con una artesana mallorquina. El conocimiento de las técnicas antiguas por parte de la azulejera complementa el aprecio de Maria Antònia por la estética contemporánea y la vena imaginativa de Álvaro.

Maria Antònia ist ihre Arbeit, ein Stück Heimat. „Mein Mann stammt aus Barcelona und kommt aus dem Gastgewerbe. Wir haben in London gearbeitet, als im Jahr 2013 die Zeit kam, eine Familie zu gründen. Wir entschieden uns für einen Umzug auf meine Heimatinsel und eröffneten ConAlmaDesign“.

Bei der Gründung eines neuen Unternehmens ließ sich das Paar von der Welt um sie herum inspirieren. Wir fragten uns: „Wie können wir unsere Fähigkeiten kombinieren und von der reichen Berufserfahrung des anderen profitieren?“

Die Antwort waren handwerklich hergestellte Küchengeräte mit Schwerpunkt auf Schneide- und Servierbrettern.

Die Umgebung von Maria Antònia und Álvaro war natürlich eine Inspiration für das Design der neuen Serie. Sie haben die Holzteile hergestellt. Die farbenfrohen Fliesen, die das Sortiment von ConAlma besonders attraktiv machen, wurden in Zusammenarbeit mit einer mallorquinischen Handwerkerin hergestellt. Das Wissen der Fliesenlegerin um die alten Techniken ergänzt Maria Antònia‘s Wertschätzung für zeitgenössische Ästhetik und Álvaro‘s Fantasie.

“Each mistake is like a key to another door of possibility”

EXPERIENCING TRADITION

It’s not just the couple’s home environment that informs their work, however. “For the tile designs, as well as incorporating traditional patterns, we think about where we’ve been on our family holidays.” A recent trip to the English capital is a case in point. “We brought the kids to see our old home. We spent many happy hours in big, green city parks like Hampstead Heath.” Now, with their Royal Garden range, ConAlma pays tribute to the wildflowers of grassy English meadows and, simultaneously, classic British design.

The pieces are finished at the ConAlma workshop in Binissalem. “It’s taken time to get where we are now,” says Maria Antònia of the charming space. “Along the way we’ve made mistakes, yes, but they’ve allowed us and our designs to improve. Each mistake is like a key to another door of possibility.”

FAITH IN INNOVATION

Faith has played an important role in their progress. “Belief in each other and our collaborators is vital for our work.” Happily, the couple has much in common, such as a dedication to family life and a love of music. “We like to listen while working. Of course it helps that we have similar taste in music!” This habit led to one of Álvaro’s innovations.

VIVIR LA TRADICIÓN

Sin embargo, no sólo el entorno doméstico de la pareja influye en su trabajo. “Para los diseños de los azulejos, además de incorporar patrones tradicionales, pensamos en los lugares donde hemos estado en nuestras vacaciones familiares”. Un viaje reciente a la capital inglesa es un ejemplo de ello. “Llevamos a los niños a ver nuestra antigua casa. Pasamos muchas horas felices en los verdes parques de la ciudad, como Hampstead Heath”. Ahora, con su línea Royal Garden, ConAlma rinde homenaje a las flores silvestres de las praderas inglesas y, al mismo tiempo, al diseño británico clásico. Las piezas se terminan en el taller de ConAlma, en Binissalem. “Nos ha llevado tiempo llegar a donde estamos ahora”, dice Maria Antònia sobre su encantador espacio. “Por el camino hemos cometido errores, sí, pero nos han permitido mejorar a nosotros y a nuestros diseños. Doch nicht nur das häusliche Umfeld des Paares fließt in ihre Arbeit ein. „ Bei der Gestaltung der Fliesen denken wir nicht nur an traditionelle Muster, sondern auch daran, wo wir mit unserer Familie im Urlaub waren. Ein Beispiel dafür ist eine kürzliche Reise in die englische Hauptstadt. „Wir haben die Kinder mitgenommen, um unser altes Zuhause zu sehen. Wir haben viele schöne Stunden in großen, grünen Stadtparks wie Hampstead Heath verbracht.“

Mit der Serie Royal Garden zollt ConAlma nun den wilden Blumen der englischen Wiesen und gleichzeitig dem klassischen britischen Design Tribut.

Die Stücke werden in der Werkstatt von ConAlma in Binissalem gefertigt. „Es hat lange gedauert, bis wir da waren, wo wir jetzt sind“, sagt Maria Antònia über den charmanten Raum. „Auf dem Weg dorthin haben wir Fehler gemacht, ja, adadurch konnten wir uns und unsere Entwürfe verbessern. Jeder Fehler ist wie ein Schlüssel zu einer anderen Tür der Möglichkeiten.

Gigging musicians, meanwhile, had been deprived of income. “We were thinking of a favourite singer, María Pascual. We asked her to record a song for ConAlma. Customers listened by scanning a QR code included with their deliveries.”

It’s little touches like this that make ConAlma’s range more than “just products”, as Maria Antònia says with justifiable pride. “They are also mirrors of experience: both our experience as travellers, and of the many generations who, over time, influenced the designs, both ancient and contemporary, that appear on our boards.” ConAlma’s deceptive simplicity, it seems, is born of the soulful efforts of many; past and present. |

Radical concepts in historic locations

For 15 years, InTheGallery has been exhibiting top-notch art photography at its home in fashionable Copenhagen. Colombian gallerist Sabina Blumekranz has brought the groundbreaking collection of international works to two locations in Palma.

Sabina Blumenkranz arrived in Mallorca just four years ago. Now, alongside her Danish partners, the elegantly dressed Colombian MBA runs the two art photography galleries she founded in the island’s capital. “After studying in the US and Madrid, I worked in Copenhagen and came across InTheGallery. What they did was different.” Although trained for business, Blumenkranz has an innate appreciation of art. “My parents collected Latino painters, such as [the famed Ecuadorian cubist] Guayasamín.” When researching Mallorca, Blumenkranz spotted an opportunity for InTheGallery to expand. “There’s more to the island than parties and star-spotting. Collectors from across the world support Palma’s visual art scene.” With its photo focus, InTheGallery complements the collections of neighbours Gallery Red and Gerhardt Braun. “Photography can be difficult to sell in Europe. We’re lucky to work with special artists.”

Sabina Blumenkranz llegó a Mallorca hace apenas 4 años. Ahora, junto a sus socios daneses, esta colombiana elegantemente vestida dirige las dos galerías de fotografía artística que fundó en la capital de la isla. “Después de estudiar en Estados Unidos y Madrid, trabajé en Copenhague y me encontré con InTheGallery. „Nach meinem Studium in den USA und Madrid arbeitete ich in Kopenhagen und stieß auf InTheGallery. Was sie machten, war anders.“ Obwohl Blumenkranz über eine kaufmännische Ausbildung verfügt, hat Sie eine angeborene Wertschätzung für die Kunst. „Meine Eltern sammelten lateinamerikanische Maler, wie zum Beispiel [den berühmten ecuadorianischen Kubisten] Guayasamín.“

Als Blumenkranz über Mallorca recherchierte, entdeckte Sie Expansionsmöglichkeiten für InTheGallery. „Die Insel hat mehr zu bieten als Partys und Starspotting. Sammler aus der ganzen Welt unterstützen Palmas Kunstszene.“ Mit ihrem Schwerpunkt auf Fotografie ergänzt InTheGallery die Sammlungen der benachbarten Galerie Red und Gerhardt Braun. „Fotografie kann in Europa schwer zu verkaufen sein. Wir haben das Glück, mit besonderen Künstlern zu arbeiten.“

“We visit art fairs across the world: Miami, Hong Kong and now Zona Maco in Mexico City”

PAINTING WITH THE CAMERA

Long-time collaborator Jacob Gils is known for his multiple exposure technique.

Blumenkranz explains: “A Gils subject may be familiar, like the Hollywood sign, but the perspective will surprise, in this case from behind. He’ll shoot for several days before layering 20 to 30 images in his darkroom.”

The Dane creates a trembling impression of the prosaic and over-blown, so it touches the heart again. An impressionist painting with his camera? “Yes, Gils’ parents were impressionist painters,’’ reveals Blumenkranz. She’s well versed in the methods of Gils, who has been with the Danish operation for 10 years, and more recent collaborators: young Søren Solkær captures the breath-taking choreography of starling murmurations, while Los Angeles-based Markus Klinko is a Swiss portraitist of fashion icons like David Bowie.

“Klinko will make his Spanish debut with us at the end of August. We met while on tour in LA,” says Blumenkranz, who has a busy schedule. “We visit art fairs across the world: Miami, Hong Kong and now Zona Maco in Mexico City.”

InTheGallery is investing more time in South America; a chance for Blumenkranz to explore her roots, as well as apply her business training. “Art is a traditional market, which I love. Feeling is always important. I’ll also find artists on Instagram and use Google AdWords to determine their reach.”

PINTAR CON LA CÁMARA

Blumenkranz lo explica: “Un tema de Gils puede ser familiar, como el cartel de Hollywood, pero la perspectiva sorprenderá, en este caso desde atrás. Er fotografiert mehrere Tage lang, bevor er 20 bis 30 Bilder in seiner Dunkelkammer übereinanderlegt.“ So schafft der Däne einen zitternden Eindruck des Prosaischen und Überzogenen, der das Herz wieder berührt. Ein impressionistisches Gemälde mit seiner Kamera? „Ja, Gils‘ Eltern waren impressionistische Maler“, verrät Blumenkranz.

Sie ist mit den Methoden von Gils, der seit 10 Jahren für das dänische Unternehmen arbeitet, und neueren Mitarbeitern bestens vertraut: Der junge Søren Solkær fängt die atemberaubende Choreografie von Starenschwärmen ein, während der in Los Angeles lebende Markus Klinko ein Schweizer Porträtist von Modeikonen wie David Bowie ist.

„ Ende August wird Klinko sein spanisches Debüt bei uns geben. Wir haben uns auf einer Tournee in LA kennengelernt“, sagt Blumenkranz, dessen Terminkalender voll ist. „Wir besuchen Kunstmessen in der ganzen Welt: Miami, Hongkong und jetzt die Zona Maco in Mexiko-Stadt.“

InTheGallery investiert mehr Zeit in Südamerika; eine Chance für Blumenkranz, ihre Wurzeln zu erforschen und ihre Ausbildung anzuwenden. „Kunst ist ein traditioneller Markt, den ich liebe. Das Gefühl ist immer wichtig. Ich finde auch Künstler auf Instagram und nutze Google AdWords, um ihre Reichweite zu ermitteln.“

A DRAMATIC SETTING

We’re in the Museum location: three levels and sporting an impressive mezzanine. “It used to be a theatre! The locals come in to relive the old days.” Blumenkranz’s sensitive use of the space betrays her grounding in feng shui. “There was one painting my mother had, she bought it directly from the artist. He’d painted his dead son. The eyes were so sad… Mother knew the story, and loved it. To counter the sadness and reflect away some of the bad energy, she had a mirror placed behind the canvas.”

Blumenkranz’s combination of business nous and creative energy has great potential. “We want to move into sculpture, and I’d love to collaborate with the city. Public display is a great way to expose your artists while bringing beauty to the streets of your home.” Like her mother, Blumenkranz has an eye for value, both monetary and artistic. |

UN ESCENARIO DRAMÁTICO

Estamos en el local cerca del Museo: tres niveles y luciendo una impresionante entreplanta. “¡Solía ser un teatro! Los vecinos vienen a revivir los viejos tiempos”. El sensible uso que Blumenkranz hace del espacio delata su formación en feng shui. “Había un cuadro que tenía mi madre, lo compró directamente al artista. Había pintado a su hijo muerto. Los ojos eran tan tristes... Mi madre conocía la historia y le encantaba. Para contrarrestar la tristeza y reflejar parte de la mala energía, hizo colocar un espejo detrás del lienzo”. La combinación de ingenio empresarial y energía creativa de Blumenkranz tiene un gran potencial. “Queremos pasar a la escultura, y me encantaría colaborar con la ciudad. La exhibición pública es una forma estupenda de exponer a los artistas y, al mismo tiempo, llevar la belleza a las calles de tu casa”. Wir befinden uns in den Räumlichkeiten des Museums: drei Etagen und ein beeindruckendes Zwischengeschoss. „Das war mal ein Theater! Die Einheimischen kommen hierher, um die alten Zeiten wieder aufleben zu lassen.“ Blumenkranz‘ sensibler Umgang mit dem Raum zeugt von ihrer Erfahrung mit Feng Shui. „Meine Mutter hatte ein Bild, das sie direkt vom Künstler gekauft hatte. Er hatte seinen toten Sohn gemalt. Die Augen waren so traurig... Mutter kannte die Geschichte und liebte es. Um der Traurigkeit entgegenzuwirken und etwas von der schlechten Energie wegzulenken, ließ sie einen Spiegel hinter der Leinwand aufstellen.“

Blumenkranz‘ Kombination aus unternehmerischem Geschick und kreativer Energie birgt großes Potenzial. „Wir wollen in die Bildhauerei einsteigen, und ich würde gerne mit der Stadt zusammenarbeiten. Öffentliche Ausstellungen sind ein großartiger Weg, um Künstler zu präsentieren und gleichzeitig die Straßen vor der eigenen Haustür zu verschönern. Wie ihre Mutter hat Blumenkranz ein Auge für Werte, sowohl monetär als auch künstlerisch. |

Der argentinische Künstler und Pflanzenliebhaber Lucas Riso fertigt in Handarbeit eine Reihe von Räucherstäbchen, Duftkerzen, Notizbüchern und anderen schönen Gegenständen an, die er mit den Gaben der balearischen Natur und einer Fülle von lokalem Wissen herstellt.

Lucas Riso is a creator in search of peace. “I was a florist for 20 years in Buenos Aires. We prepared floral arrangements for weddings, christenings and other events, and designed gardens.” The 47-year-old Argentine came to Europe for a change of direction. “I tried Italy, which wasn’t for me. Then friends recommended Mallorca.” Upon arrival three years ago, he felt an instant connection. “I loved the sea, the forests, the flowers and the wilderness. I learnt of the old people’s profound appreciation for herbs. They know what you can eat and what can heal.”

A LOVE OF NATURE

From this well of knowledge, Lucas has drunk deeply. ‘‘Often when driving through the countryside a plant will catch my eye; a borage bush, some ox-eye daisies or a patch of mallow. I keep my scissors with me and don’t get anywhere fast!”

Este argentino de 47 años vino a Europa para cambiar de aires. “Probé con Italia, que no era para mí. Entonces unos amigos me recomendaron Mallorca”. Al llegar, hace tres años, sintió una conexión instantánea. “Me encantó el mar, los bosques, las flores y la naturaleza. Conocí el profundo aprecio de los ancianos por las hierbas. Saben lo que se puede comer y lo que puede curar”.

EL AMOR POR LA NATURALEZA

Lucas Riso ist ein Schöpfer auf der Suche nach Frieden. „20 Jahre lang arbeitete ich als Blumenhändler in Buenos Aires. Wir fertigten Blumenarrangements für Hochzeiten, Taufen und andere Veranstaltungen an und gestalteten Gärten“. Der 47-jährige Argentinier kam nach Europa, um eine neue Richtung einzuschlagen. „Ich habe Italien ausprobiert, aber das war nichts für mich. Dann haben mir Freunde Mallorca empfohlen.“ Als er vor drei Jahren ankam, fühlte er sich sofort verbunden. „Ich liebte das Meer, die Wälder, die Blumen und die Wildnis. Ich erfuhr, dass die alten Leute die Kräuter sehr zu schätzen wissen. Sie wissen, welche Kräuter man essen und was heilen kann.“

DIE LIEBE ZUR NATUR

Aus diesem Wissensschatz hat Lucas reichlich getrunken. „Wenn ich durch die Landschaft fahre, fällt mir oft eine Pflanze ins Auge: ein Borretschbusch, ein paar Gänseblümchen oder ein Malvenbeet. Ich habe dann meine Schere dabei und

from the island. His incense, for example, makes careful use of native varieties instead of more popular imports, such as Mediterranean rather than California white sage. In the forest near his workshop, he passes this knowledge on to customers in occasional sessions when they can create their own unique objects.

The former florist’s goal is to deepen relaxation and spiritual exploration with tools that heal rather than harm nature. The candles are made with vegetable wax. When heated, this becomes a butter ideal for massage. The coconut casings are fit for reuse or compost. “I’m no shaman or guru. I simply let visitors to my Son Armadams workshop talk. This way they can find or design the thing they need to boost their inner power.” For all his humility, moustachioed Lucas cuts a striking figure. Much of his lean body is covered in captivating tattoos. “Relics of another life,” he smiles, “but I am proud of them.”

Das Ziel des ehemaligen Floristen ist es, Entspannung und spirituelle Erkundung mit Hilfsmitteln zu vertiefen, die der Natur nicht schaden, sondern heilen. Die Kerzen werden aus pflanzlichem Wachs hergestellt. Wenn es erhitzt wird, entsteht eine Butter, die sich ideal für Massagen eignet. Die Kokosnussschalen können wiederverwendet oder kompostiert werden. „Ich bin kein Schamane oder Guru. Ich lasse die Besucher meiner Werkstatt Son Armadams einfach reden. Auf diese Weise können sie das finden oder entwerfen, was sie brauchen, um ihre innere Kraft zu stärken. Bei aller Bescheidenheit macht der schnauzbärtige Lucas eine gute Figur. Ein Großteil seines schlanken Körpers ist mit auffälligen Tätowierungen bedeckt. Relikte eines anderen Lebens“, lächelt er, „aber ich bin stolz auf sie.

THE PATIENCE TO CREATE

It’s obvious a great deal of love and patience goes into Lucas’ creations. His incense sticks and cones, hand-poured candles, embroidered leaves, hand-stitched notebooks and other curios have a charming simplicity. “What more do you need than a palm leaf?” he says, referring to one of his beautifully embroidered fans. “This is probably what the first people on the island used, and it works well.” It’s no surprise Lucas’ products have proven popular at such shops as NU Market in Santa Catalina and Joymadebyhand in Deià. The consummate craftsman admires the work of other artists too, such as fellow Argentine and musician Luis Alberto Spinetta. “You must create if you want to see your land at peace”, Spinetta sings in Quedándote o Yéndote, as quoted by Lucas in a thoughtful Instagram post. Lucas’ so-called ‘little project’ may just have that effect. |

Island native and interior designer Marga Comas takes a break from adding to her impressive project portfolio of villas and townhouses to design the latest, and rather exclusive, addition to Mallorca’s airport.

Since the advent of mass tourism and low-cost carriers, the glamorous Golden Age of flying is long behind us. But there is still a corner of the aviation industry that has maintained its air of glitz and exclusivity, and few things are more synonymous with the high-life than travelling by private jet. So when it came to revamping the Mallorcair FBO private terminal and central office, who to approach to head up the project but top Palma-based design studio Marga Comas.

Desde la llegada del turismo de masas y las compañías de bajo coste, la glamurosa Edad de Oro de los vuelos quedó atrás. Pero todavía hay un rincón de la industria de la aviación que ha mantenido su aire de ostentación y exclusividad, y pocas cosas son más sinónimo de ello que viajar en un jet privado. AN AIR OF TRANQUILLITY

Despite its association with ultra-luxury travel, the main concept behind the project was “feeling at home”, Marga Comas explains. And smart-but-easy-going spaces are indeed artfully designed to make the client feel just that. Light-wood walls in different shapes and sizes create visual enclosures that define different areas, providing a sense of intimacy. Carpeted floors also absorb external noise, further contributing to an atmosphere of calm and tranquillity.

A soothing neutral palette also provides the canvas for pops of colour from the likes of retro-style armchairs upholstered in orange-brandy leather. A choice selection of contemporary artworks from Gallery Red, some by local artists, adds to the laid-back lounge-like feel, too. Lighting, as well, was carefully designed to make each individual space shine, but bathe the whole in a bright-yet-warm glow. A trio of bird lamps perched above the reception desk add a fun, playful touch while clients check-in.

UN AIRE DE TRANQUILIDAD

A pesar de su asociación con los viajes de ultralujo, el concepto principal del proyecto era “sentirse como en casa”, explica Marga Comas. Y los espacios, elegantes pero desenfadados, están diseñados con mucho arte para que el cliente se sienta así. Las paredes de madera clara de diferentes formas y tamaños crean recintos visuales que definen las distintas zonas, proporcionando una sensación de intimidad. Los suelos enmoquetados también absorben el ruido exterior, lo que contribuye a crear una atmósfera de calma y tranquilidad. Una paleta neutra y relajante también sirve de lienzo para los toques de color de sillones de estilo retro tapizados en piel de color naranja. Una selección de obras de arte contemporáneo de Gallery Red, algunas de ellas de artistas locales, contribuyen también a la relajada sensación de salón. La iluminación también se ha diseñado cuidadosamente para hacer brillar cada espacio individual, bañando el conjunto con un resplandor brillante pero cálido. Un trío de lámparas con forma de pájaro situadas sobre el mostrador de recepción añaden un toque divertido mientras los clientes se registran.

EIN HAUCH VON GELASSENHEIT Trotz der Assoziation mit Ultraluxusreisen war das Hauptkonzept hinter dem Projekt „sich wie zu Hause fühlen“, erklärt Marga Comas. Und tatsächlich sind die intelligenten, aber unkomplizierten Räume kunstvoll gestaltet, um dem Kunden genau dieses Gefühl zu geben. Helle Holzwände in verschiedenen Formen und Größen schaffen visuelle Abgrenzungen zwischen den verschiedenen Bereichen und vermitteln ein Gefühl von Intimität. Teppichböden absorbieren auch Außengeräusche und tragen so zu einer ruhigen Atmosphäre bei. Eine beruhigende, neutrale Farbpalette bildet auch die Grundlage für farbige Akzente wie die mit orangefarbenem Leder bezogenen Sessel im Retrostil. Eine erlesene Auswahl zeitgenössischer Kunstwerke aus der Gallery Red, einige von lokalen Künstlern, trägt ebenfalls zum entspannten LoungeCharakter bei. Auch die Beleuchtung wurde sorgfältig geplant, um jeden einzelnen Raum zum Strahlen zu bringen, aber das Ganze in ein helles, aber warmes Licht zu tauchen. Ein Trio von Vogellampen über dem Empfangstresen sorgt für eine lustige, verspielte Note, während die Kunden einchecken.

And for the crew, a large double S-shaped sofa forms the centre of their dedicated area, with various tables and armchairs where cabin staff and pilots can relax and watch the large screen TVs. There’s a separate more work-oriented area, too, with a kitchenette, dining table and high-desk space with printer and computers.

“The result is an airport terminal where everyone can have their own space for privacy and relaxation,” Marga modestly concludes. It’s an assuredly realised project that successfully combines comfy homelike spaces with a good measure of timeless glamour that flying private still demands. |

SEA AS THE PROTAGONIST

For this project, they worked together with Calvià-based architectural studio Tarragona Hohne. With Anna Tarragona at the helm, they ensured it maintained the character of its extraordinary setting and the sea it overlooks. The interior design was inspired by the surrounding landscape, reflecting it through the use of calming natural tones and luminescent spaces. The sea, with the starring role, was brought inside through art. In collaboration with Aba Art Lab, almost all the artwork was selected in tones of blue – only one breaks the pattern to echo the deep red of a sunset. The kitchen, designed by Italian brand Modulnova, is a radiant space bathed in natural light. The layout allows you to prepare food while gazing out over the shimmering sea. It also opens into the dining area to create a bright and airy space perfect for family together-time. Some bedrooms, too, have floor-to-ceiling windows that offer sweeping seascape panoramas.

EL MAR COMO PROTAGONISTA

Para este proyecto, han colaborado con el estudio de arquitectura de Calvià Tarragona Hohne. Con Anna Tarragona al frente, se aseguraron de que mantuviera el carácter de su extraordinario entorno y del mar al que se asoma. El diseño interior se inspiró en el paisaje circundante, reflejándolo mediante el uso de tonos naturales y espacios luminosos. El mar, como protagonista, se llevó al interior a través del arte. En colaboración con Aba Art Lab, casi todas las obras de arte se seleccionaron en tonos azules; sólo una rompe el esquema para hacerse eco del rojo intenso de una puesta de sol. La cocina, diseñada por la marca italiana Modulnova, es un espacio radiante bañado por la luz natural. La distribución permite preparar la comida mientras se contempla el mar. También se abre al comedor para crear un espacio luminoso y aireado, perfecto para pasar tiempo en familia. Algunos dormitorios también tienen ventanas desde suelo al techo que ofrecen amplias vistas al mar.

DAS MEER ALS PROTAGONIST Für dieses Projekt haben sie mit dem Architekturbüro Tarragona Hohne aus Calvià zusammengearbeitet. Unter der Leitung von Anna Tarragona wurde sichergestellt, dass der Charakter der außergewöhnlichen Umgebung und des Meeres, auf das es blickt, erhalten bleibt. Das Innendesign wurde von der umgebenden Landschaft inspiriert und spiegelt diese durch die Verwendung von beruhigenden Naturtönen und leuchtenden Räumen wider. Das Meer, das die Hauptrolle spielt, wurde durch Kunst ins Innere gebracht. In Zusammenarbeit mit Aba Art Lab wurden fast alle Kunstwerke in Blautönen ausgewählt - nur ein einziges unterbricht das Muster, um das tiefe Rot eines Sonnenuntergangs widerzuspiegeln. Die Küche, die von der italienischen Marke Modulnova entworfen wurde, ist einstrahlender, lichtdurchfluteter Raum. Dank der Aufteilung können die Bewohner ihr Essen zubereiten und dabei auf das schimmernde Meer hinausblicken. Sie öffnet sich auch zum Essbereich hin, um einen hellen und luftigen Raum zu schaffen, der sich perfekt für gemeinsame Stunden mit der Familie eignet. Auch einige Schlafzimmer verfügen über raumhohe Fenster, die einen weiten Blick auf das Meer bieten.

A PALETTE OF LIGHT

In fact, the whole house is created like a balcony overlooking the sea “that is born and dies every day” the creative team at Espacio Home Design poetically put it, “with the light reflecting the whole palette of colours in a single day.” To achieve this they drew on other top Italian brands such as Molteni&C and Riva1920, whose quality and design also elevated the tone across the home.

“Spaces are living beings,” Espacio goes on to expand thoughtfully. And it is this insight that informs their approach, and produces such impressive results. |

With its vertiginous crescent of rocky hillside overlooking a broad shimmering bay, it’s no wonder Cala Llamp has become a magnet for some of the island’s most exclusive residential developments. Neighbouring swanky Puerto Andratx only adds to its upmarket vibe and has helped it become home for many of Mallorca’s most impressive properties – of which Can Roca is one.

STONE AND SEA

The design of this five-bedroom home is clean-lined and contemporary, though with a palette of calming hues and stone cladding that echo the surrounding hills. Carved into the rocks, its L-shaped design, various floor-to-ceiling glass doors, and sun-filled patios make the most of spectacular sweeping panoramas. The feeling is of being on a ship sailing towards the horizon.

Behind this spectacular slice of luxury living are two of Mallorca’s top companies: architectural and management firm APM and kitchen specialists, Birgit Müller. To match the property’s top-end finish, the kitchen had to be something special. “Can Roca’s interior is modern, Mediterranean and timelessly beautiful,” explains Birgit “and the kitchen, with its mix of materials, fits harmoniously into this concept.”

La sensación es la de un barco navegando hacia el horizonte.

COFFEE AND WOOD

Warm cappuccino and soothing grey tones characterise the bright and airy space, with illumination provided by a large sea-view window and designer lighting. Smart units have handle-less designs, adding to its flowing quality, while the Calacatta marble countertop is as highly-durable as it is eye-pleasing. The high-end sinks and taps are titanium, with appliances by top brands such as Miele and Bora. Another highlight is a round solid oak table resting on the kitchen island. “It embodies our passion for wood as a material,” Birgit continues, “with an authenticity that only nature itself can produce.”

The result is a top-quality kitchen that more than earns its place as the heart of this home, and certainly goes to help justify the eight-figure price tag this premium property is presently on the market for. |

Sandwiched between the popular holiday resort of Santa Ponsa and the Port Adriano luxury yacht marina, it’s no surprise Nova Santa Ponsa has evolved into one of Mallorca’s most sought-after residential neighbourhoods. And it was the owner of an apartment here who approached the creative team at lifestyle furniture store Villa Wesco to carry out a total revamp of their home.

NATURAL

TONES AND MATERIALS

The Santa María-based interior designers began by setting themselves the task of creating a complete colour and lighting concept for redesigning all the rooms, while ensuring the client’s wishes flowed seamlessly into the plan. A selection of natural tones was chosen to increase the feeling of light and space, while the atmospheric tones and cool contrasts of accessories help to give that ‘wow’ factor. A combination of natural materials like wood, fabrics and ceramics also complement each other to add to the ‘feel-good’ atmosphere.

Los interioristas de Santa María empezaron por crear un concepto completo de color e iluminación para rediseñar todas las habitaciones, asegurándose de que los deseos del cliente fluyeran de forma natural en el plan. Se eligió una selección de tonos naturales para aumentar la sensación de luz y espacio, mientras que los tonos atmosféricos y los contrastes fríos de los accesorios ayudan a dar ese factor “wow”. Una combinación de materiales naturales como la madera, las telas y la cerámica también se complementan entre sí para contribuir a la atmósfera de bienestar.

Die Inneneinrichter aus Santa María machten es sich zur Aufgabe, ein komplettes Farb- und Beleuchtungskonzept für die Neugestaltung aller Räume zu erstellen und gleichzeitig dafür zu sorgen, dass die Wünsche des Kunden auf natürliche Weise in den Plan einfließen. Es wurde eine Auswahl an Naturtönen getroffen, um das Gefühl von Licht und Raum zu verstärken, während die stimmungsvollen Töne und die kühlen Kontraste der Accessoires dazu beitragen, den „Wow“-Faktor zu erzeugen. Eine Kombination aus natürlichen Materialien wie Holz, Stoffen und Keramik ergänzt sich ebenfalls und trägt zur Wohlfühlatmosphäre bei.

With furniture at the core of their business, Villa Wesco also drew from some of the finest international brands to furnish the apartment. This included seating by the likes of Italian and Dutch firms Manutti and Eichholtz, and smart designer lighting by Foscarini. The dedication to quality continues onto the outside terrace too, with an elegant Manutti sofa and charming vase-based tables by Gloster.

COMING HOME

“The transformation made the flat much more modern, spacious and cosy,” explains Villa Wesco director Ana Lado, “as soon as you enter the property you get that feeling of coming home.” She was also pleased to achieve their aim of taking what was a ‘functional’ looking home and imbuing it with more character and identity.

“I was immediately convinced that Ana and her team had all the necessary skills and enthusiasm,” the client recalls, “and so gave them a free hand. And I was overwhelmed by the result!”. |

“La transformación hizo que el piso fuera mucho más moderno, espacioso y acogedor”, explica la directora de Villa Wesco, Ana Lado, “nada más entrar en la vivienda tienes esa sensación de volver a casa”.

También se alegró de haber conseguido su objetivo de coger lo que era una vivienda de aspecto “funcional” e impregnarla de más carácter e identidad.

“Me convencí enseguida de que Ana y su equipo tenían la capacidad y el entusiasmo necesarios”, recuerda la clienta, “así que les di vía libre. Y el resultado me abrumó”. |

„Durch die Umgestaltung wurde die Wohnung viel moderner, geräumiger und gemütlicher“, erklärt die Direktorin von Villa Wesco, Ana Lado, „Sobald man das Haus betritt, hat man das Gefühl, nach Hause zu kommen.“ Außerdem freute sie sich, dass das Ziel erreicht wurde, einer „funktional“ aussehenden Wohnung mehr Charakter und Identität zu verleihen.

„ Ich war gleich davon überzeugt, dass Ana und ihr Team die nötigen Fähigkeiten und den Enthusiasmus mitbrachten“, erinnert sich der Kunde, „und so ließ ich ihnen freie Hand. Und ich war von dem Ergebnis überwältigt!“ |

Since its humble beginnings as an artisan workshop in the early 1930s, three generations of the Riera family have grown the company into one of Mallorca’s most impressive furniture and interiors businesses. And they are still based in the town of Manacor where it all started, with their 2,000-square-metre showroom brimming with top-quality furnishings from world-class brands.

Desde sus inicios como taller artesanal a principios de los años 30, tres generaciones de la familia Riera han convertido la empresa en uno de los negocios de muebles e interiores más impresionantes de Mallorca. Evening illumination is provided by Olev designer lighting, which appears to gracefully float in the air. A geometric wall lamp by Laura Meroni adds an arty, avant-garde element, while Ditre armchairs are finished in soft suede-like nubuck leather.

The outside furnishings have had no less care in their selection, with a sofa and other outdoor furniture picked from the swish Talenti range. There’s a touch of French design here, too, with outdoor rugs by Ligne Roset tying together indoor and outdoor spaces. The result is a perfectly balanced harmony of styles and brands that bears testimony to both their in-house talent and over 90 years in the business. |

“Our aim was to create the feeling that the world had stopped,” explains Victoria Mogildea, “so you can get away from it all and be worry-free, if just for a moment.” The Bien Estar Architecture co-founder is describing their latest project’s stunning rooftop terrace, offering blissfully broad vistas over the Llucmajor coast and out across shimmering Palma Bay. It is this way of thinking that has informed much of the design behind this swish, villa-style property - imagining the home from the future inhabitant’s perspective, and projecting how they would experience and live within the various distinctive spaces.

“Nuestro objetivo era crear la sensación de que el mundo se ha detenido”, explica Victoria Mogildea, “para que puedas alejarte de todo y despreocuparte, aunque sea por un momento”. La cofundadora de Bien Estar Architecture está describiendo la impresionante terraza de su último proyecto, que ofrece unas vistas muy amplias de la costa de Llucmajor y de la brillante bahía de Palma. Esta forma de pensar es la que ha inspirado gran parte del diseño de esta elegante propiedad de estilo contemporáneo. WELLBEING

She decided that simplicity would also be key to realising the full potential of the property, where “wellbeing and every detail counts”. Interiors are characterised by clean elegant lines, with finishes in top-quality natural materials such as local stone and smooth wood for a modern Mediterranean feel. Handpicked designer furniture throughout also contributes to the home’s high-end vibe.

And while floor-to-ceiling windows, bright airy spaces and a big lawned garden make the most of Mallorca’s warm climate, Victoria and her team ensured it was very much a home for year-round living. A lower-ground floor includes a cosy lounge area with a fireplace and potential for a cinema room, perfect for holing up over the cooler months.

Decidió que la simplicidad también sería clave para aprovechar todo el potencial de la propiedad, donde “el bienestar y cada detalle cuenta”. Set between the picturesque pine forest of Bellver Park and buzzing waterfront Paseo Maritimo, El Terreno used to be one of Palma’s most exclusive and cosmopolitan districts. While it had since fallen into a state of decline, a recent boom in the area has seen many of the neighbourhood’s crumbling old properties bought up and brought back to life.

Situado entre el pintoresco pinar del Parque Bellver y el animado Paseo Marítimo, El Terreno solía ser uno de los barrios más exclusivos y cosmopolitas de Palma. Aunque desde entonces había caído en un estado de decadencia, un reciente boom en la zona ha visto cómo muchas de las viejas propiedades en ruinas del barrio han sido compradas y devueltas a la vida.

El Terreno liegt zwischen dem malerischen Pinienwald des Bellver-Parks und der belebten Uferpromenade Paseo Maritimo und war früher eines der exklusivsten und kosmopolitischsten Viertel Palmas. Zwischenzeitlich war es dem Verfall preisgegeben, doch in letzter Zeit boomt die Gegend und zahlreiche alte, heruntergekommene Häuser wurden aufgekauft und zu neuem Leben erweckt.

WOW-FACTOR FINISH

This latest work by interior design firm Lala Home is one such case. Miami-native Cristina Egurrola is the creative talent behind the firm and, since moving to Mallorca, has been behind several of the island’s most exciting design projects.

“The client’s brief was they wanted something that felt like you were on vacation,” Cristina begins, “so somewhere between a cool boutique hotel and a Soho House-style private members’ club.” It was for investment more than a home, so the owner was looking for something that would offer guests real wow-factor.

FUNKY BOUTIQUE VIBE

Smart black-and-white patterning is a consistent theme throughout most of the apartment, but with variations to distinguish between spaces; green crocodile-textured wallpaper in one, funky floral art deco in another. Blocks of turquoise panelling chime with the pink of the custom-built sofa. The property’s original sixties-era stained-glass doors were repurposed to make walk-in closets. Lighting was also designed to be a bit “sexier than a regular home” Cristina explains.

Este último trabajo de la empresa de diseño de interiores Lala Home es uno de esos casos. Cristina Egurrola, nacida en Miami, es el talento creativo detrás de la empresa y, desde que se mudó a Mallorca, ha estado detrás de varios de los proyectos de diseño más interesantes de la isla.

“Las instrucciones del cliente eran que querían algo que se sintiera como si estuvieras de vacaciones”, comienza Cristina, “así que en algún lugar entre un hotel boutique fresco y un club privado al estilo de Soho House”. Se trataba de una inversión más que de una vivienda, por lo que el propietario buscaba algo que ofreciera a los huéspedes un verdadero factor sorpresa.

Die aus Miami stammende Cristina Egurrola ist das kreative Talent hinter der Firma und hat seit ihrem Umzug nach Mallorca einige der aufregendsten Designprojekte der Insel umgesetzt. „Der Kunde wollte etwas, das sich anfühlt, als wäre man im Urlaub“, beginnt Cristina, „ eine Mischung aus einem coolen BoutiqueHotel und einem privaten Mitgliederclub im Stil des Soho House“. Es war eher eine Investition als ein Zuhause, also suchte der Eigentümer nach etwas, das den Gästen einen echten „Wow-Faktor“ bieten würde.

FUNKIGE BOUTIQUEATMOSPHÄRE

Das elegante Schwarz-Weiß-Muster zieht sich wie ein roter Faden durch den Großteil der Wohnung, allerdings mit Variationen, um zwischen den einzelnen Räumen zu unterscheiden: grüne Krokodiltapeten in einem Raum, flippige Art-Déco-Blumen in einem anderen. The apartment – now named Lala House –marks another step in El Terreno’s journey back to one of Mallorca’s hippest and most sought-after neighbourhoods. And the project further cements Lala Home’s reputation for creating wonderfully bold, colourful and occasionally surprising interiors that are quite unlike anything else on the island. |

“They say the kitchen is the heart of the home,” begins Caterina Cottarelli, Mallorca City Manager at Cosentino, “and the countertop is the most crucial element in a kitchen. It’s the place to work, to experiment, and where the family gets together at various points through the day.” It’s also the aesthetic focal point of the kitchen, but one that is often prone to daily wear and tear from constant use.

Diàfan Arquitectura, the architectural firm behind the design of the house, stress that the kitchen island should be considered an important “piece of furniture” in its own right. It’s an elegant pure black form with a wooden bar delicately placed above, to give just the right warmth and integrate it with the house as a whole.

EQUILIBRIO DE FORMAS

Con sus líneas limpias, su acabado inmaculado y su elegante diseño contemporáneo, esta casa ultra ecológica ubicada en la Colònia de Sant Pere es todo superficies impecables. Accompanying the bar is the Dekton Domoos countertop, in graphite black to achieve a refined, smart and stylish look and feel. In keeping with the project’s sustainable credentials, the ultra-compact Dekton top has not only been chosen for its exceptional aesthetic qualities but also because it is a carbon-neutral product throughout its life cycle. Furthermore, the surface is highly durable and resistant to scratches, stains and extreme temperatures, meaning it will not tarnish over time and spoil the home’s impeccable appearance.

“We want to leave the maximum impression on people,” Caterina explains, “and the minimum footprint on the planet.” |

While initially renowned as amongst the best places on the island to buy the latest in home furniture and decor, Trends Home today also boasts a top interior design team. It’s headed up by Creative Director Mikel Lipponen who, together with Interior Designer Esperanza Viñals, were the minds behind transforming a characterful property in Colonia de Sant Jordi into a family-friendly holiday home.

“From the start, we wanted to retain the charm of the building,” explains Mikel, “and from there take inspiration to dress the house.” So for the selection of furniture, they looked for timeless pieces that would accompany the house in both quality and

FLOWING SPACE AND DAPPLED LIGHT

Another important part of their brief was to create a flowing, functional ground floor space, perfect for the family to share time together. To this end, a bright open-plan living area with lounge, dining and kitchen connects to a lovely courtyard from two aspects. And on the terrace, a bamboo covering creates pretty dappled light over a pool, dining table and built-in seating area. Pistachio green accents and exposed marès stone also combine to eye-pleasing effect. And most importantly, the clients were thrilled with the outcome. “The Trends Home team’s passion for interior design has resulted in a great project that combines top quality design with Mediterranean spirit,” the family enthuse. |

“The clients told us more than once, ‘I am my house!’” recalls Yoana Petrova of Puchet Constructions, “which placed a particularly big onus on us to fulfil their emotional expectations.” Set on the outskirts of pretty Valldemossa village, and with gorgeous sea-and-mountain views, this traditional Mallorcan house certainly had dreamhome potential. “Every client is different,” Yoana continues, but this couple had very specific ideas on how they wanted things done, “We chose every material and finish shoulder-to-shoulder, going through every room in the house.” In the lounge, they kept the sloping

Los clientes nos dijeron más de una vez: "¡Yo soy mi casa!", recuerda Yoana Petrova, de Puchet Construcciones, "lo que nos obligó a cumplir sus expectativas emocionales". Situada en las afueras del bonito pueblo de Valldemossa, y con preciosas vistas al mar y a la montaña, esta casa tradicional mallorquina tenía sin duda el potencial de una casa de ensueño. "Cada cliente es diferente", continúa Yoana, pero esta pareja tenía las ideas muy claras sobre cómo querían que se hicieran las cosas. stone-clad wall, which gave the space a quirky charm, and contrasted it with a clean white finish. This juxtaposition of rustic and modern became a common theme, such as the passage into the kitchen comprising old stone steps alongside silver-grey microcement. Here, the worktop is finished with grey Zarci stone and cupboards lined with olive wood for a contemporary country kitchen feel.

A STUDY IN STONE

For the outdoor terraces and pool area they also chose grey Zarci natural stone, both for its aesthetic and hard-wearing qualities. Bathrooms were fitted with rough-cut natural stone basins and shower floors studded with river stone mosaic. Even a small tool shed was converted into a guest house, preserving its typical marès stone walls. It took a year to finish the house, and when first seeing it, it was clear their client's expectations had been met upon them exclaiming: "If the walls could talk, they would thank you for all the love and work invested in restoring every inch of me." “And this is why we do what we do,” beams Yoana. |

Für die Außenterrassen und den Poolbereich wählte man ebenfalls den Naturstein Gris Zarzi, sowohl wegen seiner ästhetischen als auch seiner strapazierfähigen Eigenschaften. Die Badezimmer wurden mit roh behauenen Natursteinwaschbecken und mit Flusssteinmosaik besetzten Duschböden ausgestattet. Sogar ein kleiner Geräteschuppen wurde in ein Gästehaus umgewandelt, wobei die typischen MarèsSteinwände erhalten blieben.

Es dauerte ein Jahr, bis das Haus fertiggestellt war, und als sie es zum ersten Mal sahen, war klar, dass die Erwartungen ihrer Kunden erfüllt worden waren, als sie ausriefen: „Wenn die Wände sprechen könnten, würden sie euch für all die Liebe und Arbeit danken, die ihr in die Restaurierung jedes Zentimeters von mir investiert habt." „Und das ist der Grund, warum wir tun, was wir tun", strahlt Yoana. |

When Mercedes fell in love with a 100-year-old country house, at first sight, she knew she wanted her renovation to let all its charming imperfections and rustic foibles shine through.

Cuando Mercedes se enamoró a primera vista de una casa de campo de 100 años de antigüedad, sabía que quería que su renovación dejara entrever todas sus encantadoras imperfecciones y toques rústicos.

Als Mercedes sich auf den ersten Blick in ein 100 Jahre altes Landhaus verliebte, war ihr klar, dass sie bei der Renovierung all die charmanten Unvollkommenheiten und rustikalen Marotten des Hauses zur Geltung bringen wollte.

Once a self-confessed workaholic living in Sweden, it suddenly struck Mercedes Lopez Coello one day when she was deep in a project: “Is this it? Is this how we are going to live our lives?” She knew it was time for a change, and that epiphany led her on a path ultimately to her dream home on Mallorca. The century-old finca is nestled in the Moscari foothills of the Tramuntana, set among fields scattered with almond trees and olive orchards, a timeless rustic idyll whose soundscape is the buzz of cicada, soft dinging of sheep bells and clucking chickens. It was love at first sight for Paraguay-born Mercedes when she saw the stone farmhouse. “I fell in love with the outside,” she recalls, “it gave me goosebumps, and I told my husband ‘this is it’”.

Mercedes López Coello, una adicta al trabajo que vivía en Suecia, se dio cuenta un día que estaba inmersa en un proyecto: “¿Esto es todo? ¿Es así como vamos a vivir el resto de nuestra vida?”. Supo que era el momento de cambiar, y esa epifanía la condujo a la casa de sus sueños en Mallorca. La finca centenaria está situada en las estribaciones de Moscari, en la Tramuntana, entre campos salpicados de almendros y olivos, un idilio rústico e intemporal cuyo paisaje sonoro es el zumbido de las cigarras, el suave tintineo de los cencerros de las ovejas y el cacareo de las gallinas. Para Mercedes, nacida en Paraguay, fue un amor a primera vista cuando vio esa casa de piedra. “Me enamoré del exterior”, recuerda, “se me puso la piel de gallina, y le dije a mi marido ‘esta es’”.

Für die in Paraguay geborene Mercedes war es Liebe auf den ersten Blick, als sie das steinerne Bauernhaus sah. „Ich verliebte mich in das Äußere“, erinnert sie sich, „ich bekam eine Gänsehaut und sagte zu meinem Mann ‚das ist es‘“.

AN AIR OF SIMPLICITY

At first, Mercedes thought she was only going to make a few changes, but the project soon took on a life of its own. “At first I didn’t know where to begin, but once you get started, you soon find other areas that need fixing, and then one thing leads onto another…” she explains. What she did know from the outset, however, was she wanted it to have an air of simplicity, even austerity. This was largely achieved by ubiquitous crisp whitewashed walls and smooth microcement flooring which create a clean and calming backdrop throughout the house.

Mercedes also knew that she wanted natural materials to play a central role, too, with the use of stone, earthenware, wood, linen and rattan. These would help echo the charming foibles of the old house and its absence of straight lines, to create a more organic, flowing, and characterful feel. “Nothing was straight in the original house, and so everything had to follow in this style of imperfections,” says Mercedes.

UN AIRE DE SENCILLEZ

Al principio Mercedes pensó que sólo iba a hacer algunos cambios, pero el proyecto pronto cobró vida propia. “Al principio no sabía por dónde empezar, pero una vez que empiezas, pronto encuentras otras áreas que necesitan arreglarse, y entonces una cosa lleva a la otra...”, explica. Lo que sí tenía claro desde el principio es que quería que tuviera un aire de sencillez, incluso de austeridad. Esto se consiguió en gran medida gracias a las paredes encaladas y el suelo de microcemento liso, que crean un fondo limpio y relajante en toda la casa. Mercedes también sabía que quería que los materiales naturales desempeñaran un papel central, con el uso de piedra, loza, madera, lino y ratán. Esto ayudaría a reflejar las encantadoras debilidades de la casa antigua y su ausencia de líneas rectas, para crear una sensación más orgánica, fluida y con carácter. “Nada era recto en la casa original, así que todo tenía que seguir este estilo de imperfecciones”, dice Mercedes.

EIN FLAIR VON SCHLICHTHEIT

Zunächst dachte Mercedes, dass sie nur ein paar Änderungen vornehmen würde, aber das Projekt nahm bald ein Eigenleben an. „Zuerst wusste ich nicht, wo ich anfangen sollte, aber wenn man erst einmal angefangen hat, findet man schnell andere Bereiche, die repariert werden müssen, und dann führt eines zum anderen“, erklärt sie. Was sie jedoch von Anfang an wusste, war, dass sie einen Flair von Einfachheit, ja sogar von Sparsamkeit wollte. Dies wurde größtenteils durch die weiß gestrichenen Wände und die glatten Mikrozementböden erreicht, die im ganzen Haus einen sauberen und beruhigenden Hintergrund schaffen. Mercedes wusste auch, dass Naturmaterial eine zentrale Rolle spielen sollte: Stein, Steingut, Holz, Leinen und Rattan. Sie sollten die charmanten Schwächen des alten Hauses und das Fehlen gerader Linien widerspiegeln, um ein organisches, fließendes und charaktervolles Gefühl zu erzeugen. „Im ursprünglichen Haus war nichts gerade, und so musste alles diesem Stil der Unvollkommenheit folgen“, sagt Mercedes.

It’s been over seven years since The Sunday Times declared Palma the winner of the ‘Best Places to Live in the World’. Citing everything from its “picturesque old town, beaches within walking distance, and a great climate” it was a sparkling endorsement that went to confirm what those living here already knew. However, the 2015 article also asserted that “most foreigners buy flats in one of Palma’s converted historic palacios,” which certainly no longer rings true today.

Hace más de siete años que The Sunday Times declaró a Palma ganadora de los “Mejores Lugares del Mundo para Vivir”. Citando todo, desde su “pintoresco casco antiguo, playas a poca distancia, y un gran clima”, fue una promoción brillante que vino a confirmar lo que los que viven aquí ya sabían. Sin embargo, el artículo de 2015 también afirmaba que “la mayoría de los extranjeros compran pisos en los palacios históricos reconvertidos de Palma”, lo que ciertamente ya no es cierto hoy en día.

SEEKING BALANCE

Despite the disruptions caused by Covid, Palma has bounced back confidently, with building projects continuing to spring up all over the Balearic capital. And areas that were previously considered ‘less fashionable’ are providing the perfect neighbourhoods for luxury-level real estate that offer this more spacious community-style living. While some second-home buyers are still drawn to the undeniable charm of the city’s historic centre, more are starting to look towards developments that provide a more balanced lifestyle. One such development is Acantos. It’s set on a road that winds through the quieter residential neighbourhood of Son Dameto, located on the north-westerly fringes of Palma, and just inside the cintura ring-road that encompasses the city. Responsible for the design is the architectural studio of Alejandro Palomino, which has long been setting the benchmark for luxury-level development on the island. Their design seeks to “facilitate the union and dialogue between families” with spacious rooms and layouts that shorten the distance between indoors and outdoors, and terraces that form part of the living-dining rooms. Extensive green communal areas also provide a sense of space and nature, while encouraging socialising around the gardens and swimming pool. “This is the beginning of a new direction in Mallorca,” explains Enzo Belmonte Galván,
