Every day, the YMCA at the Athenaeum gives our community the support it needs to learn, grow and thrive. Together with our members, volunteers, friends and partners throughout the community, we take on the challenges that shape our future. From tackling the achievement gap to teaching healthy habits for a lifetime, everything the Y does is in service of building a better us.

LET’S WORK TOGETHER

The YMCA at the Athenaeum has been a consistent and integral part of Suzanne and her family’s lives for over 15 years. She and her husband Will joined as individuals and enjoyed all the various workout options and inspiring coaches. Once their children were born, they got a family membership and their time at the YMCA has grown.

“We took advantage of the convenient, clean, well-supplied and staffed Child Watch on many occasions when our children were younger. We were always greeted with a smiling staff person.

Gymnastics, tumbling and basketball for our children were, and continue to be, staples of their healthy lifestyles.”

Perhaps the most important programming they have taken advantage of is the preschool.

“As we began vetting preschool options for our children, the YMCA was of course on our list. Even with all the options this city has, the YMCA at the Athenaeum preschool was by far the best fit for our children.”

The programming offers play as the basis for learning and development. It stresses the importance of healthy choices, physical activity, and respecting oneself and others. It was clear that pre-writing and pre-reading skills were introduced and developed through play and creative outlets during the year. Although indoor and outdoor space is limited, the teachers and support staff created a rich and bright environment in the classroom.

“Our children each spent 2 happy years at this preschool. Both are now in elementary school and were clearly well prepared for the transition. The boys are happy in their new classrooms, but we all miss the Y preschool!”
