The Circus Arts Conservatory
2075 Bahia Vista Street Sarasota, Florida 34239
On behalf of my colleagues at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, I offer my heartiest congratulations on reaching this important milestone in The Circus Arts Conservatory journey. The vision you hold—and so generously share—demonstrates the power of creativity and community to connect, uplift, and inspire. In your gifted hands, the circus is a place without boundaries and borders. Such spaces are as needed as they are rare.
Many of us at the Smithsonian were introduced to CAC by Preston Scott and Deborah Walk, respectively curator and advisor of the “Circus Arts” program for the 2017 Folklife Festival. Thinking back to the day we first met, I remember entering your tent to the crackling energy of students floating through space and props flying in the air. What struck me was not a sense of spectacle, but of intimacy—those incalculable expressions of trust between students, teachers, parents, mentors, and staff. Each seemed to reflect a sense of care and possibility that I would soon learn was a hallmark of your work.
I returned to D.C. thinking about what it takes to build an intentional community and how the history of circus could fuel its future. Most of all, I walked away with overwhelming respect for its art, craft, and heritage. All of that embodied the Folklife Festival’s purpose of “honor[ing] contemporary living cultural traditions and celebrates those who practice and sustain them.” It was natural that CAC should play a pivotal role in our own 50th anniversary programming, including bringing that same tent to the National Mall in 2017. I cannot thank you enough for letting us peek behind the flaps.
As The Circus Arts Conservatory celebrates it 25th year, it is fitting to note that the word “circus” comes from the Latin meaning “circular.” What an evocative image! It reflects your ability to create encounters of energy and wonder that flow between those of us in the seats and you in the ring. Such moments are a beautiful manifestation of your vision, intention, grace, and perseverance.
Again, my congratulations to all whose hands, hearts, and hard work contributed to this moment. To you, Dolly and Pedro, I extend my sincere thanks for welcoming a nerdy museum kid into your circus family. May wonders never, ever cease.
With gratitude,
Sabrina Lynn Motley Director, Smithsonian Folklife Festival

From our humble beginnings in an office that started in our garage… it’s hard to believe how far we have come and that twenty-five years has passed. We knew what we wanted to achieve and had the passion and determination to do it. We were so fortunate to have met so many amazing people along the way that supported us, encouraged us, educated us in the not for profit field and most importantly believed in us.
These people without them knowing it, were the fuel to our fire and were the concrete to help create the foundation upon which we stand today. Out of the kindness of their hearts they helped, inspired and guided us and we were able to soar.
During this journey we have been very fortunate to have had and continue to have an incredibly devoted and hardworking staff of employees whom we consider family.
All our board members past and present have contributed to the success of this organization.
Our hearts are filled with gratitude to all who have helped us along this journey.
Now we look towards the future and the next twenty-five years and we are extremely excited.
As Eleanor Roosevelt said…. “The future belongs to those that believe in the beauty of their dreams”
Thank you all for being part of our journey,
Pedro Reis Dolly Jacobs-Reis Founder/President & CEO Founder & Vice President

The Circus Arts Conservatory, The First Twenty Five Years, chronicals these and many other fascinating facts of sarasota’s Circus history. Get your copy today!
After 25 years of trials, triumphs, setbacks, and spectacular successes, The Circus Arts Conservatory takes you inside the Big Top, the Board Room, and all points in between to share the story of how a dream to preserve Sarasota’s legacy as America’s “Circus City” led to the creation of a new circus for the 21st century.
Circus Sarasota is proud to welcome back as its Ringmaster the renowned Joseph Bauer, Jr., a star of Bauer’s Circus Maximus and a 15th generation member of one of Switzerland's oldest circus families. His father came to the united States to perform in 1954. Since then, this illustrious Swiss Family has called Sarasota home. The Sarasota-born Bauer has been a performer since a very young age, when he joined the family daredevil act, The Fabulous Fearless Bauers. In his early teens, he was performing such thrilling acts as the motorcycle on the incline wire, skywalks on the highwire, the death-defying 90 foot swaypole and the challenging 50 foot whirling Wheel of Destiny.
The multi-talented Bauer is not only known for his death-defying bravery, but also for his elegance and prodigious skills as a Ringmaster. His accomplishments have taken him all around the globe to many illustrious circus venues, TV appearances and competitions.
And now, in the dazzling spotlight of Florida’s Famous Circus Sarasota, Joseph Bauer, Jr. presents artists from all around the world to thrill and delight “Children of All Ages” in southwest Florida.

Ethereal grace takes both human and equine form with Sylvia Zerbini and her beautiful steeds in a unique performance you won’t soon forget!
Zerbini hails from a nine-generation circus family and has been performing since the age of 13. While her father trained horses and wild animals, her mother was an aerialist — a scene seemingly set for Zerbini’s future in performance.
Born in Sarasota, Zerbini studied ballet and gymnastics and performed on the trapeze from an early age. But her love of equestrianism ultimately inspired a lifelong passion that she has carried with her throughout her career.
Zerbini was one of the first people to mix aerial and equestrian work in performance. She has
won numerous awards for her acts, including the prestigious Cup of Monaco, presented to her by Monaco’s Prince Rainier.
Zerbini’s Liberty Horses are just as practiced and professional as she. She teaches her horses in French and rewards them with encouragement (or treats) throughout their training. She builds a bond and understanding with each individual horse. As she puts it, she “makes good memories” for them. Each gesture, each body movement, each spoken cue means something specific to the horse.
After performing for nearly 10 million people around the world to date, Zerbini and her astounding animals will dazzle you with their display of controlled power and beauty.

Chu
Chuan-Ho was born in Tainan, Taiwan; he became fascinated by the art of diabolo and started to practice at the age of 20. In 2010 he made his first appearance in Europe.
This first European appearance took place at the SOLyCIRCO Festival in Germany. It resulted in a contract for the big show “Feuerwerk der Turnkunst” and several contracts in Europe followed.
2014 was a year without any shows due to Chu’s service in the Taiwanese army; but in 2015 Chu made a very strong European comeback at the Tigerpalast Variété in Frankfurt am Main.

Chu loves Europe and European audiences and hopes to discover many other countries and continents during his career.
He recently performed in Peru during Peru’s independence celebrations from Spain known as the “Felices Fiestas Patrias” (Happy Patriot Celebrations). These celebrations bring many circuses to Peru and he was featured in El Gran Circo.
Chu now makes his American debut with Circus Sarasota and is very excited to perform for Sarasota audiences.
With great speed, power, and incredible acrobatic moves Chu shows his passion for the art of Diabolo!
Julia Figuière & Julien Posada (together known as JuJu) are astounding tight wire artists — and you won’t believe your eyes watching them suspended on a thin metal rope!
Julien discovered the circus at the age of 7 at L´Ecole Nationale du Cirque Annie Fratellini (now Académie Fratellini) in Paris. He trained in different disciplines before specializing in tight wire with Maestro Manolo Dos Santos. After finishing circus school in 2000 at age 18, he went on to travel the world with multiple touring companies including Cirque du Soleil’s Alegria (Australian tour) and Circus Flora in St. Louis, Missouri.
In 2016, Julien joined forces with Julia Figuière to create a new wire duo, “Champagne.” After performing in many international locales the duo have arrived in Sarasota for an unforgettable run in Circus Sarasota 2023!
Growing up in Brooklyn, Al Calienes peered over a neighborhood fence to see the circus setting up. The sense of excitement from that day stuck with him.
He began his own circus journey at the age of 26 with the Big Apple Circus. “The show stopped three blocks from my place in Brooklyn so I didn't run away to the circus, I walked,” he says. After working as a graphic artist and an illustrator, Al decided it was finally time to join the circus, once and for all!
He began as an usher for The Big Apple Circus. Through hard work, a willingness to learn and passion for his chosen profession, he became a member of the core company and the clown, Remarkable Renaldo, was born.
After eight amazing years of clowning at The Big Apple Circus, he went on to work with The Royal Hanneford Circus and then to the famed Sea World in Orlando Fla.
He also toured with Canada’s Garden Brothers Circus, England’s Zippo’s Circus and with univerSoul Circus.
He has now been performing and teaching for more than 19 years… it’s a dream come true!
While his story has warmed your heart, his hilarious animated antics and Chaplinesque clowning will win your grin, too! Get ready to giggle with the irrepressible Renaldo. He’s living proof that all the world loves a clown!

Atthe age of just six years old, Wesley Williams received his first unicycle from none other than jolly old Saint Nicholas. In no time at all Wesley learned to ride the unicycle and started doing local shows in South Florida.
The faces and pure amazement from friends and family left Wesley wanting more and from that moment forward he was destined for show business.
Since then, Wesley Williams has been a hit in practically any type of venue around the world, from two successful runs on America’s Got Talent and Britain’s Got Talent, to winning Bronze at the World Festival of Circus Art “IDOL” in Moscow, Russia at the famous Great Moscow State Circus and even winning the prestigious “Gold Elefant” at the Festival Internacional Del Circ “Elefant D’ Or “ in Girona, Spain.
Wesley Williams comes to us at the utmost prime of his career flying to the Suncoast directly from the 45th Festival International Du Cirque De Monte-Carlo.
In addition to Wesley’s international victories, one of his proudest accomplishments is his Official Guinness Book World Record for the “Tallest Rideable unicycle” at 31 feet, 10 inches in 2023.

Alan Jones Silva was born in 1982 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the 6th generation of a traditional circus family. He started a general training program, at age 4 with his father and grandfather. Both have spent their entire lives living and performing for the circus.
At 6 years old, Alan made his debut in the circus doing floor acrobatics and clowning. By 10 he had learned trapeze, which he performed for 3 more years.
After that, Alan followed in his grandfather’s footsteps and began performing Maromba, it is like a tight wire act, except the stunts are performed on a rope suspended between springs. However, Alan loved to be in the air. He returned to the air in 1998 when he changed his act to an Aerial Acrobatic Flying Silks. In 2003 he became part of Cirque du Soleil’s “Zumanity” production at the New york-New york hotel in Las Vegas.
In the end, Alan hopes to spread a positive message through his art. “I just want to tell everyone my goal is to see myself without the adversity I’ve had in my life because of my size,” he said. “I’ve been judged a lot for my entire life and bullied a lot because of my size. And if you are a person who has felt this way about your own image or body type or whatever you’re going through, I just want to say you should continue to be the best version of yourself, hold your head up high, and keep going. Because everyone deserves a beautiful life and everybody is special in their own unique way.”
Alan appeared in season 15 of America’s Got Talent, and returned for America’s Got Talent All-Stars in January 2023.

Considered the greatest classic hand balancer of his generation, Oleg Izossimov was born in Chelyabinsk (a Russian city located east of the ural Mountains). When Oleg was twelve years old, he saw the Russian hand balancer Nikolai Kasse in a circus performance, and he was so impressed that he decided then and there that this was what he would do. He would never forget Kasse’s act.
By1989, Oleg Izossimov had already participated in his first circus festival, La Piste aux Espoirs, in Tournai, Belgium—known for featuring high-quality new acts produced by circus schools.
Oleg received the first of the many awards he would gather over the years, the Courrier de l’Escault prize. He received his second award, the prestigious Rumyantsev-Karandash award, given in Russia to the best new act of the year.
Oleg’s true professional debut was in 1991, when he was invited to join a company of the Moscow Circus that was then touring the u.S. with The Flying Cranes. But the version of his act that made him a true circus star, Caruso, was created in 1993 at Circus Nikulin in Moscow. The following year, Oleg Izossimov was the sensation of the short-lived (1992-1994)—albeit well-remembered and sorely missed—International Circus Festival of Verona (Italy), where he won the highest honor, the Gold Star.
One of the highlights of his career, however, was in 2006, when he was invited by the International Circus Festival of Monte-Carlo to participate in an all-star tribute to the late Prince Rainier III of Monaco, in a show that will probably be remembered as the greatest circus performance of all time.

Becoming a Legacy Society member is as simple as including The CAC in your will. Charitable bequests are among the simplest and most flexible ways to leave your legacy. Planned giving options such as distributions from an IRA retirement account, or establishing charitable trusts that produce lifetime incomes carry significant tax advantages while ensuring your circus legacy wishes.
Please consider becoming a CAC Legacy Society Member. Contact Zoltan Karpathy, CAC Vice President of Philanthropy, at 941-355-9335 x325 or email Zoltan@CircusArts.org for more information about how your donations can benefit you while helping sustain the CAC mission.
You can make a difference. Leave a circus LegacY.
