DO NO HARM!
ABBY BUSKIRKMy main goal in architecture is to do no harm to the general public. In my opinion, the forefront of architectural design should be about how the public interacts with the spaces created. To do this, I always try to create spaces in my designs that are intriguing to the public eye or that are accesible to the public 24/7.


I personally feel that this quote describes architecture as a waste of space. I do believe that architecture is an art but I feel there are better ways to describe that version of art. Perhaps architecture is actually an art of creating beautiful spaces for the public to enjoy.

ALLEVIATING STRESS...


IN THIS PROJECT, ME AND MY PARTNER’S GOAL WAS TO ALLEVIATE STRESS IN THE WORKPLACE. TO BEGIN THIS PROCESS WE HAD TO FIRST RESEARCH ABOUT STRESS IN THE WORKPLACE AND HOW TO COMBAT IT. TO THE RIGHT IS A FLOW DIAGRAM SHOWING A VARIETY OF STRESSORS IN THE WORKPLACE AND WAYS TO RELIEVE STRESS BROKEN DOWN INTO 3 MAIN CATEGORIES: NATURE, MENTAL WELL-BEING, AND EXERCISE.
THE MAIN WAY WE THOUGHT TO COMBAT STRESS WAS THROUGH THE USE OF IMPLEMENTING RAMPS THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE BUILDING TO TRY AND GET PEOPLE TO GET UP AND EXERCISE INSTEAD OF TAKING THE ELEVATOR.
THE RAMP DIAGRAM ALSO SHOWS OUR IDEOLOGY OF SEPARATING PUBLIC AND PRIVATE. ON THE PUBLIC FLOORS, THE RAMPS ARE PLACED ON THE EDGES Of THE BUILDING, BUT ON THE PRIVATE FLOORS, THE RAMPS ARE SWITCHBACK RAMPS, PLACED IN THE CENTER OF THE BUILDING CREATING AN ATRIUM SURROUNDED BY GLASS.

OUR FLOOR PLANS HELP TO FURTHER SHOWCASE OUR IDEOLOGY BEHIND THE RAMPS. IT ALSO SHOWS THE VARIETY IN THE SHAPES OF OUR FLOORS DUE TO THE FORM OF OUR BUILDING INTERSECTING THROUGH. FINALLY, IT HELPS TO SHOW OUR USE OF NATURE, MENTAL WELL-BEING, AND EXERCISE IN THE DESIGN. ON THE FIFTH FLOOR AND UP, WE HAVE DESIGNATED NAP PODS FOR WORKERS TO TAKE A NAP AND RELAX DURING THE WORKDAY. ON THE FOURTH FLOOR WE HAVE AN OPEN-AIR URBAN PLAZA THAT HAS PATHS YOU CAN WALK ON, BENCHES TO SIT AND ENJOY THE VIEW OF THE HIGHLINE, AND LOTS OF NATURE ALL WITH THE GOAL OF RELEASING STRESS. FINALLY, EVERY OFfICE FLOOR HAS A KITCHEN/LOUNGE AREA FOR WORKERS TO GO TO FOR A BREAK.
THE PROGRAMMING BELOW HELPS TO SHOW WHERE THE DIFfERENT TYPES OF OFfICE SPACES ARE LOCATED. IT ALSO SHOWS WHERE THERE ARE EXERCISE ZONES AND RELAXATION ZONES IN THE BUILDING.

THE DETAILS...

TO THE RIGHT IS A HAND DRAWN DETAIL OF A PORTION OF OUR BUILDING. IT SHOWS OUR MOSTLY CONCRETE STRUCTURE WITH GLASS FRAMED BETWEEN EACH FLOOR. WE ALSO DECIDED TO HAVE A RAISED FLOOR SYSTEM WITH THE GOAL OF BEING ABLE TO RUN ELECTRICAL UNDERNEATH IT.WE ADDED A STEEL PLATE TO THE EDGES OF OUR LARGE CONCRETE PORTIONS WITH THE GOAL OF HELPING MAINTAIN INSULATION WITHIN THE BUILDING. FINALLY WE HAVE HORIZONTAL STEEL CLADDING THAT FRAMES INTO I-BEAMS TO PRODUCE A UNIQUE SKIN ON OUR BUILDING.
BELOW IS A DETAIL AXON OF THE MIDDLE PORTION OF OUR BUILDING. IT SHOWS THE VARIATION WE HAVE BETWEEN HORIZONTAL STEEL CLADDING AND FIBERGLASS VERTICAL FINS, AS WELL AS DISPLAYING A COUPLE OF OUR RAMPS FROM IN THE BUILDING. FINALLY, IT ONCE AGAIN ALSO SHOWS THE RAISED FLOOR SYSTEM WE HAVE.

IT ALSO SHOWS HOW THE OFfICES ON THE UPPER FLOORS HAVE A SET BACK FROM 10TH AVE TO GIVE THOSE OFfICES MORE PRIVACY.

TO THE LEFT IS AN IMAGE OF OUR MODEL OF OUR BUILDING THAT SHOWS A VIEW OF IT FROM THE HIGHLINE. IT ALSO SHOWCASES THE STAGGERED FLOORS IN THE OFfICES IN THE UPPER FLOORS THAT ARE DEDICATED TO UNPLUG ZONES OR YOGA ROOMS TO ENCOURAGE THE WORKERS TO RELAX OR EXERCISE WHEN THEY FEEL STRESSED.

BAMBOO PAVILION


MODEL AND STRUCTURE...

TO THE RIGHT IS A PHOTO OF OUR GROUPS MODEL WE CREATED OF OUR BAMBOO PAVILION. IT’S CREATED OUT OF DOWELS, STRING, AND GLUE. THE MODEL SHOWS HOW WE HAD MULTIPLE BAMBOO TIED TOGETHER FOR THE SUPPORTS HOLDING THE REST OF THE BAMBOO. WE ALSO MADE A PULLEY SYSTEM WITH THE GOAL OF PULLING THE RULED SURFACE TIGHT AND HOLDING THE STRUCTURE SHOWN.

TO THE LEFT IS A PHOTO OF OUR FINAL BAMBOO STRUCTURE. EACH BAMBOO SPANNING LONG ACROSS WAS 30’ AND TIED TO THE TWO SETS OF THREE 16’ BAMBOO POSTS.

PROCESS...








THE DIAGRAMS BELOW SHOW THE PROCESSES OF HOW WE COLLECTED BAMBOO AND THEN BUILT THE STRUCTURE. WE BEGAN BY CUTTING DOWN BAMBOO IN A CANYON AND PASSING IT UP A LARGE HILL AND PLACING IT IN THE BACK OF A TRUCK. WE THEN TRANSPORTED IT TO THE SITE AND CARRIED THE BAMBOO DOWN THE HILL TO WHERE WE WERE BUILDING THE STRUCTURE.
WE FIRST SET UP THE BAMBOO STRUCTURE FLAT ON THE GROUND. WE THEN USED A PULLEY SYSTEM AND THREW THE ROPE OVER A TREE BRANCH. FROM THERE WE HOISTED THE STRUCTURE UP AND TIGHTENED ROPES AS NECESSARY TO CREATE THE DESIRED FORM.








BELOW IS AN IMAGE OF OUR BAMBOO JOINTS FOR THE STRUCTURE. WE CUT NOTCHES INTO THE POSTS AND PLACED THE LONG SPANS OF BAMBOO IN THE SLOTS. WE THEN SECURED THE BAMBOO IN THE SLOTS WITH ZIPTIES, ROPE, AND WOOD DOWELS.










I BEGAN THIS PROJECT BY FIRST ANALYZING THE SITE GIVEN. I ANALYZED VARIOUS WEATHER ASPECTS AS WELL AS ZONES, EXISTING CONTENT, AND DRIVING/FOOT TRAFfIC.

I ALSO DID 2 EXPERIENTIAL SKETCHES OF THE SITE SHOWING THE SNOW CENTER AND THE VIEW OF THE LAKE AND PICNIC AREA.


SITE PLAN + STUDY MODEL...

TO THE RIGHT IS MY SITE PLAN FOR MY BUS STOP. I PLACED IT ALONG A CURVE TO COUNTERACT ITS GEOMETRIC SHAPE AND THE SITE ALSO SLOPES DOWN IN THAT SPOT WHICH MAKES MY SWINGS FEEL MORE OVERDRAMATIC WHEN BEING USED. THE BUS STOP WAS ALSO PLACED HERE TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO VIEW Y-BEACH WHICH ALLOWS THEM TO SEE ACTIVITY INSTEAD OF JUST STARING AT A STREET WAITING FOR A BUS TO COME.
TO THE LEFT IS A STUDY MODEL I MADE. IN THIS STUDY MODEL I PLAYED WITH CREATING RULED SURfACES AND HOW TO PLAY THAT OFf OF A SIMPLE GEOMETRIC SHAPE.

THIS RENDER DISPLAYS MY BUS STOP IF YOU WERE APPROACHING FROM Y-BEACH. IT DISPLAYS HOW ONE COULD JUST SIT AND WAIT FOR THE BUS STOP OR SWING ON THE SWINGSETS IN IT.


THIS RENDER IS USED TO DISPLAY MY BUS STOP AS IF YOU WERE WALKING TO IT FROM THE PARKING LOT. IT AGAIN SHOWS THE USE OF A SWINGING ON A SWINGSET.
IT ALSO SHOWS HOW YOU CAN CLIMB THE STRUCTURE. THE STRUCTURE IS MEANT TO ALMOST BE LIKE MONKEY BARS AND THE VARIOUS SHAPES GIVE DIFfERENT WAYS TO CLIMB IT.

TO THE RIGHT IS A FORM DIAGRAM OF MY BUILDING. IT SHOWS MY IDEA OF FINDING PATHS PEOPLE WOULD USUALLY TAKE ON THE SITE AND FORMING MY BUILDING AROUND IT TO NOT INCONVENIENCE ANYONE. ESSENTIALLY I BEGAN WITH A BOX OF THE REQUIRED SQUARE FOOTAGE. I THEN TOOK THE PATHS I FOUND AND EXTRUDED THEM UP. I SPLIT THE RECTANGLE BY THE PATHS AND CREATED DIFfERENT PROGRAM SPACES OUT OF WHAT WAS LEFT OF THE BOX.

THERE’S ALSO A SHADING STRUCTURE ON TOP OF IT THAT I CREATED TO KEEP HARSH SUNLIGHT FROM THE SOUTH FROM GETTING IN THE BUILDING AND MAKING IT HOT INSIDE BUT STILL ALLOWING SUNLIGHT TO GET THROUGH TO GIVE NATURAL LIGHT IN THE BUILDING..
BELOW IS MY FLOOR PLAN FOR THE BUILDING. THERE ARE PRIVACY WALLS IN BOTH THE MENS’ AND WOMENS’ RESTROOMS FOR WHEN YOU FIRST ENTER THE RESTROOMS. THERE’S ALSO A UNISEX BATHROOM TO ACHIEVE EQUALITY FOR THOSE WHO MAY NOT FEEL COMfORTABLE IN A MENS/WOMENS RESTROOM. THE DOORS ARE SHOWN SHUT FOR AREAS UNAVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC WHILE THE OPEN DOORS SHOW THE RESTROOMS THAT ARE OPEN TO ANYONE. FINALLY I HAVE DIFfERENT THICKNESSES IN THE WALLS BECAUSE THE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING IS CONCRETE BUT THE INSIDES WHERE I CUT PATHS THROUGH IS STEEL TO HELP REFLECT SUNLIGHT.

OUR STUDIO SECTION THEN PROCEEDED TO CREATE A MASTERPLAN TO FIT IN ALL OF OUR DESIRES FOR THE SITE. WE FIRST WANTED THE SITE TO BE ENGAGING FOR THOSE WALKING THROUGH DOWNTOWN. FOR THIS WE MADE AN AREA OF CONCRETE SLABS TO INVITE PEOPLE IN AND PLACED THE CAR TRAFfIC ALONG THE SIDE OF THE SITE SO THAT PEDESTRIANS WOULD BE UNBOTHERED.
WE CREATED PATHS THROUGH THE SITE FOR PEOPLE TO WALK THROUGH AND ENJOY DIFfERENT ART EXHIBITS DISPLAYED, AS WELL AS AN AMPITHEATER AT THE END OF THE SITE FOR MUSIC. THERE’S A WATER SYSTEM THROUGH THE SITE THAT fOLLOWS AROUND THE PATHS TO HELP KEEP THE VEGETATION ON THE SITE ALIVE AND WELL WHILE ALSO MAKING IT EASIER TO MANAGE.

I BEGAN DESIGNING MY ART CENTER BY CREATING MASSINGS BASED ON SITE LINES fROM THE MASTER PLAN OR BY COMPILING BOxES TOGETHER AND PLAYING WITH THE HIERARCHY Of 1 VERSUS 2 flOORS.
ON THE LEFT IS MY PROGRAMMING DIAGRAM WHICH SHOWS MY FINAL MASSING AS WELL AS HOW I ORGANIZED MY PROGRAMS. A MAJOR PART OF THIS PROJECT WAS THE OUTDOOR RAMP THAT WRAPPED AROUND THE WEST BUILDING TO CREATE AN INHABITABLE ROOFTOP. THERE’S ALSO AN INHABITABLE ROOFTOP ON THE EAST BUILDING BUT IT’S NOT ACCESSIBLE 24/7 LIKE THE WEST BUILDING’S IS.

THE MODEL TO THE RIGHT IS MY PARTI MODEL WHICH REPRESENTS THE BASIC GEOMETRIES USED TO CREATE THE FORM OF MY BUILDING AND THE GRIDLINES PRODUCED FROM THEM. I WRAPPED THE STRING AROUND TWICE WHERE THE ACTUAL BUILDING WAS TO EMPHASIZE THE BUILDING SHAPE COMPARED TO THE THINNER GRID LINES BRANCHING OFf OF THEM. THE GRID LINES ARE ABLE TO SHOW THE BUILDING SITE VERY WELL AND HOW THE BUILDING FITS WITHIN IT.

TO THE LEFT ARE MY ELEVATIONS. THE ROOF WAS SHOWN TRANSLUCENT ALLOWING THE BUILDING TO EASILY BE SEEN WHILE ALSO SHOWING THE SHAPE OF THE ROOF.
IN MY ELEVATIONS, I USED SHADING TO TRY AND PORTRAY WHERE THE BUILDING IS CLOSE OR FAR AWAY AS WELL AS TO SHOW THE ANGLES OF CUTS IN THE BUILDING. ONE THING SHOWN IN MY ELEVATION THAT I FIND IMPORTANT IS THAT I MADE SURE TO PUT A GARAGE DOOR ON THE NORTH SIDE ELEVATION WHERE THE BLACK BOX THEATER IS LOCATED. THIS WAS DONE WITH THE INTENTION THAT IT COULD BE USED TO MOVE SETS IN EASILY.

ABOVE ARE MY SECTIONS MEANT TO SHOW HOW THE SPACES LOOK IN THE BUILDING. I MAINLY WANTED TO SHOWCASE THE EXHIBITS, CAFE, STORE, AND STUDIOS.

FLOOR PLANS...

ABOVE ARE MY FLOOR PLANS. THE FIRST FLOOR IS OVERLAYED ON THE SITE TO HELP GIVE SITE CONTEXT. I CHANGED MATERIALITY IN THE BUILDING SITE THAT ISN’T FILLED BY THE BUILDING. THE GREY THAT MATCHES THE SITE IS CONCRETE, THE DARKER GRAY IS LARGER ROCK PATHS, AND THE SPOTTED AREAS ARE GRAVEL. OUTSIDE THE WEST BUILDING IS A SMALL AMPITHEATER.
ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF MY BUILDINGS, I ANGLED MY EXTERIOR WALLS WITH THE INTENTION OF KEEPING THE BUILDINGS FROM GETTING HOT. THE EXHIBIT SPACE HAS SLIDING WALLS. BOTH THE DOORS AND WALLS REVOLVE TO CREATE DIFfERENT SPACES. IN THE SPACES UNDER THE RAMP, COLUMNS ARE USED FOR SUPPORT BUT ALSO FOR CASH REGISTERS AND BOOTHS.
INTERIOR RENDERS...
THIS RENDER WAS USED TO DISPLAY MY CAFE AREA IN THE ART CENTER. MORE SPECIFICALLY, ITS GOAL WAS TO DISPLAY THE BOOTHS THAT ARE CREATED WITHIN THE SPACES CREATED BY THE COLUMNS TO HOLD UP THE EXTERIOR RAMP. PEOPLE CAN COME TO THIS CAFE TO DO WORK, OR GET A DRINK OF COFfEE, OR JUST SIT AND CHAT AND WITH FRIENDS.
THIS RENDER IS MEANT TO SHOW THE EXHIBIT SPACES IF ALL THE DOORS WERE CLOSED AND ALL THE WALLS WERE OUT AND FLAT. THIS SPACE CAN BE CHANGED FOR WHATEVER WORKS BEST FOR THE EXHIBIT BEING SHOWN AT THE TIME. FOR INSTANCE, ALL DOORS CAN BE SET OPEN AND INSTEAD OF HAVING A GLASS WALL CAN BE COMPLETELY OPEN AIR OR WALLS CAN BE SLID OUT OF THE WAY FOR LARGER AREAS OF SPACE TO BE MADE OR SET AT DIFfERENT ANGLES TO CREATE UNIQUE SPACES.



EXTERIOR RENDERS...



THE GOAL OF THIS RENDER WAS TO GIVE AN IDEA OF WHAT THE EXPERIENCE WOULD BE TO WALK UP TO THE BUILDING AFTER PARKING YOUR CAR. I FEEL IT GIVES AN OVERALL OUTLOOK OF THE APPEARANCE OF THE BUILDING WHILE ALSO GIVING AN IDEA OF THE LIFE THAT CAN BE SEEN EVEN FROM A DISTANCE.
A VIEW I REALLY WANTED TO GIVE OF MY BUILDING WAS THE INHABITABLE ROOFTOP OF THE WEST BUILDING. THIS BUILDING HAS UNIQUE SPACES CREATED BY HAVING RAMPS THAT COULD BE USED BY PEOPLE TO LOUNGE ON. I ALSO PUT SEATING ON THE ENDS OF THE RAMPS SO THAT YOU COULD SIMPLY JUST SIT INSTEAD OF LEANING BACK OR LAYING DOWN ON THE RAMPS. FINALLY THE SIDES OF THESE RAMPS ARE GLASS TO ALLOW FOR SKYLIGHTS FOR THE INSIDE OF THE BUILDING TO GIVE MORE NATURAL LIGHT IN AREAS THAT WINDOWS MAY NOT BE ABLE TO REACH.
DO NO HARM!
Ultimately my goal in architecture is to never cause harm to the people living in the environment. Since it is people who are experiencing the building, they should be considered in the forefront of design. I felt the most efficient way to do this was by either making intriguing spaces for the public to enjoy and/ or by making 24/7 publicly accesible areas. In my portfolio, I have shown how I’ve worked towards achieving this concept so far in my architecture career and I hope to continue doing the same in the future.
