STREETERVILLE RESIDENCE

01

PROJECT/CONCEPT

Four story private residential townhouse design based on a fusion of non-western Chinese design traditions with contemporary western design for a couple in the Streeterville neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. In keeping with the convention of minimalism in traditional Japanese design, this Chicago townhouse reflected a modern take on customary design practices, using asymmetry, simplicity of decoration, and maintenance of balance even with moments of deliberate imperfection. Taking inspiration from graphic Japanese woodblock prints, the use of vivid color, clean lines, as well as attention to detail were dominant elements in the design concept.

FLUYT RESTAURANT

02

PROJECT/CONCEPT

Design for an opulent restaurant located on the lobby level of a luxury boutique hotel in the downtown Amsterdam, Holland. Taking from the inspiration of the acceptance of cultural difference and influence as well as how the wealth that was acquired during the seventeenth century shipping “Golden Age” of Amsterdam’s history affected the city, the design of the restaurant plays on the new age opulence with an undertone in Dutch pride.

SULTZER REGIONAL LIBRARY

05

PROJECT/CONCEPT

Restoration of a historical regional library on the northern side of Chicago using sustainable materials and LEED practices. Inspired by the art deco feeling of the original regional library which opened in 1985, the concept of this restoration was to use materials with similar likeness to those used in the first construction with attention to LEED requirements and sustainability practices.

To increase water efficiency within the building, and reduce the burden on the municipal water supply and wastewater systems, a landscape architect was consulted to create an irrigation system, and internally the design used innovative water technologies such as water efficient low flush toilets and non-water using urinals.

05 XLI XVI

A sustainable site links natural and built systems to achieve balance and improve quality of life. Sustainable landscapes balance the needs of the people and their environment, as well as benefit both. To accomplish this balance, the site has public transportation access three miles away. There is also employee access to bicycle storage and changing rooms. A storm water design and roof top garden as well as light pollution reduction have all been proposed.

With the goal of increasing energy performance to reduce environmental and economic impacts associated with excessive energy use in the library, low energy appliances and lighting fixtures will be used throughout the space. In order to establish reduction of energy use and optimize building performance, comfort, and savings, the library will feature solar panels on the roof as well as a small wind turbine. A two-year contract with a renewable energy company would provide at least 35 percent of the building’s energy from renewable source was proposed.

Through the use of sustainable materials such as, recycled content, rapidly renewable materials, regional materials, as well as certified woods, the materials throughout the library are environmentally friendly and safe to the inhabitants.

BARR RESIDENCE

06

PROJECT/CONCEPT

An Art Deco inspired remodel of a residential home and outdoor living space in the Palm Springs neighborhood of California. Inspired by the graphic geometry of the Art Deco style that was so popular in Palm Springs during the fifties, the design of this residential space uses bold colors and luxe textures that are representational of the time period and the indoor/ outdoor lifestyle that exemplifies life in the Golden State. Melding nature and the comfort of interior living becomes the focus in this design. Bringing natural, indigenous materials into the home and working the design around organic, userfriendly components renews the idea of Palm Springs living.

ALVARO SIZA GALLERY

07

PROJECT/CONCEPT

Interior renovation reflecting the design style of Alvaro Siza in a historic downtown Chicago building into a museum displaying the works of the architect.. “poesia grafica” Using the concept of poetic modernism, along with Siza’s respect for his country of origin, the title of this exhibit will be “graphic poetry” translated into Portuguese. To Siza it is important to make sure that the architecture melds with the natural landscape on which it’s built and to do this in a rhythmic way that captures the movement of the building within it’s setting. Using skewered geometric shapes along clean curved lines the exhibit will be in Modernist style. Using artificial, as well as maximizing and creatively diffusing natural light the exhibit will be the perfect background for the art in which it houses.
