o amount of ecstasy is a safe dose. That’s the message from the Abbotsford Police Department and the Fraser Health Authority in the wake of 18 ecstasy deaths in B.C. since the start of 2011. This week, APD launched Operation X, an initiative intended to warn and inform teens and parents about the danger of street drugs, including ecstasy. Dr. Victoria Lee, medical health officer for the FHA, says they are also actively working with schools to get that message out. Ecstasy has taken hold in a young demographic who might not fully understand the risk.

Authorities reaching out with warnings about ecstasy use Lee reiterates that the safest and wisest choice is to not take it at all. “You can do permanent damage from the first time,” Lee advises. “Even one is unsafe.” Ecstasy-related emergencies are bad news, agrees Dr. Roy Purssell. The medical director of the B.C. Drug and Poison Information Centre is also an emergency physician at Vancouver General Hospital. An ecstasy situation almost always means serious trouble, he says, because most people having a negative reaction wait too long to go to the hospital, or the people they are with don’t realize the seriousness of a delay.

Ecstasy, also referred to by its abbreviated form MDMA, can be fatal because of how it raises body temperature to dangerous levels, which can shut down the body’s blood-clotting ability and lead to multi-organ failure. Purssell says if the temperature remains high – above 40.5 degrees C (normal is 37) – for more than an hour, the chance of death or permanent brain damage is 75 per cent. “Patients have come in after a delay with a huge increase in temperature and, with the best of medical care, it has been impossible to stop them from dying ... These are young people with full lives.” Emergency medical intervention in such cases involves rendering the patient unconscious – if they haven’t come in that way – and packing them in ice to reduce their temperature. espite efforts by authorities over recent years to protect the public from ecstasy pushers, the scene has quietly edged sideways and carried on. Scouring a teen’s room for baby pacifiers, stuffed animals and glowing gloves will no longer yield the classic hallmarks of an E user. If you knew that those accessories are commonly associated with raves, and you already knew that a rave is a late-night dance party set to electronic music, then you might also know that ecstasy is the reason

Not the only reason – there are ravers who don’t use drugs – but a large part of the desire to neon, glow-stick, and costume yourself to dance for long hours is fuelled by euphoria-inducing pills. The context has moved, however, out of sweaty warehouse dance parties and 30-somethings’ feel-good weekends, into the back seats of N-adorned cars and teenage get-togethers. The rave scene reached Canada around 1991. Historically, the risks associated with using ecstasy, or MDMA, were due to the hot, prolonged environment of the

dance floors. Hours of physical activity combined with a lack of water was a recipe for overheating, seizures and organ failure. People died, yet the party continued because ecstasy lacked the bad, back-alley reputation of crack or heroin. The brightly coloured pills, stamped with cartoon faces or cute logos, seem far removed from the dangers of hard drug use. Intimate house parties and weeknight concerts are the new backdrop to popping pills, and as the scene dilutes, the dangers mount. In a 2009 report on the illicit drug situation, the RCMP acknowledged that by 2005 Canada was one of the primary source countries for the world’s supply of ecstasy and that MDMA continued to be the most sought after and widely available controlled synthetic drug. An amendment to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act in 2011 made it illegal to possess the precursor chemicals. The potential consequence was that traditional components of ecstasy became hard to come by in B.C., and a less expensive but lethal compound, PMMA, was introduced. PMMA, also an amphetamine, is five times more toxic than MDMA. It is now often used to make a drug similar in appearance, and sold as, ecstasy.

Ecstasy gained popularity as a sensory-enhancing drug used at raves, or large dance parties. It is now used as a recreational drug in lower-key settings. Eight deaths in Calgary and five in B.C. since July 2011 have now been confirmed as caused by PMMA. B.C. saw 16 ecstasy-related deaths in 2011 and two more so far in 2012. The fatalities range from age 14 to 37. Since November of last year, Abbotsford has had two young people die and a 24-year-old woman was in critical condition for weeks after consuming ecstasy. Tyler Miller, 20, and Cheryl McCormack, 17, died late last year. Depression, cracked teeth (from jaw-clenching), dehydration and high body temperatures don’t sound quite as scary as brain and organ damage and death, so those warnings need to be repeated. Ecstasy is anecdotally expected to be reliable. The curious are told by friends to simply anticipate a great night of “rolling,” possibly augmented by

additional pharmaceuticals. Dr. Mark Yarema, medical director of the Poison and Drug Information Service, stresses that should the pills contain PMMA, the blissful effects are slower to kick in and it becomes tempting to take more, resulting in over-heating and seizures. Due to various innovations in the drug-cooking world, “pingers” can be laced with highly toxic substances which are impossible to detect before ingesting. Police and medical authorities have said this in an indication of the danger of using drugs manufactured in home labs and sold on the streets. The release of seratonin initially creates feelings of euphoria, pleasure, energy, confidence, increased senses of touch, taste and smell; it also gives users a feeling of personal insight, empathy and sociability. For most people, a “hit” of MDMA lasts for two to six hours. Once the pill is swallowed, it takes about 15 minutes for MDMA to enter the bloodstream and reach the brain. About 45 minutes later, the person experiences a “high.” People who use MDMA might feel very alert, or hyper, at first. MDMA can also cause muscle tension, nausea, blurred vision, and increased heart rate and blood pressure. Forceful clenching of the teeth can occur. Bulging eyes are also a common side effect. No ‘ecstasy’ at all

Muscle tension, nausea, and blurred vision. Forceful clenching of teeth and bulging eyes. Welcome to the drug ecstasy. Feelings of sadness, anxiety, depression, and memory difficulties after the high. Doesn’t sound very euphoric, does it? Increased heart rate and blood pressure. Hardly fun... Interference with the body’s ability to regulate its temperature, leading to hyperthermia. This is getting serious. Brain and organ damage – or death – in 75 per cent of serious overheating cases. That’s the supposedly “safe” street drug known as ecstasy, or MDMA. Once in the domain of raves, or large dance parties, this synthetic drug has made its way into the high school demographic.

In about the past year, it has been the cause of 18 deaths in B.C. – including two Abbotsford teens, and one in Langley. Ecstasy doesn’t require prolonged use to be potentially fatal. Because of the wide range of toxic chemical concoctions developed in home labs, disaster can result from a single dose. Ecstasy is cheap, it’s easy to get, and it’s increasingly popular. Police, medical and education ofﬁcials are undertaking new initiatives to get the message out: Ecstasy can be a killer. Parents, you must become informed. You need to have conversations with the young people in your care. Don’t assume your kids simply wouldn’t touch ecstasy. You may be tragically wrong. And to the youth in this community: Please, listen. Think. Say no.

B.C. Views As MLAs resumed their raucous legislature arguments over a municipal auditor-general, the B.C. government’s own watchdog cut through the noise with a devastating audit of the state of Crown forests. Auditor General John Doyle’s survey of the province’s vast forests comes at a critical time. A team of forest ministry experts is examining the situation at Burns Lake, to see if the Babine Lake Forest Products sawmill can be rebuilt, after a tragic explosion and ﬁre on Jan. 20. Babine was one of a string of highvolume mills along Highway 16 in northwestern B.C. that have been working their way through the enormous stock of decaying pine that surrounds them. The “shelf life” of these trees is estimated to extend to 2019, but that’s a best-case scenario. In reality, the expanse affected by

pest and disease is much more complex. The B.C. government touts its “Forests for Tomorrow” program that started in 2005 with a boost of federal funds to restock B.C.’s burned and beetle-killed forests. More than 14 million seedlings are to be planted this year and up to 21.5 million next year. Total planting is about 200 million trees this year, most done by industry as a condition of Crown timber licences, as has been the practice since 1987. Is it enough, in this era of climate shift, massive die-off and fires? Doyle says no. “We noted a significant gap between the total area replanted by the ministry and the total area suitable for replanting,” the auditor writes. “The ministry has not indicated how this low level of silviculture investment reconciles with its legislated mandate to achieve longterm timber benefits and to maintain or enhance future timber supply.” And he criticizes the quality of industry reforestation, describing a tendency to choose “the least-cost, least-risk approach to meet reforestation regulations, which means planting lower-cost, faster-growing species.” Species diversity and adaptation are what is needed.

He says the Burns Lake situation brings into focus the biggest problem identiﬁed by the auditor: the poor state of B.C.’s forest inventory. As much as three-quarters of it is out

completed last summer for four forest districts, including the Burns Lake district, the ministry still can’t say if there are enough logs available to rebuild Babine. Simpson says the industry knows the answer. Two of the world’s highestcapacity sawmills are at Houston and Vanderhoof, on either side of Burns Lake, and their huge salvage log supply is degrading and running out. A political intervention to “save” the Burns Lake mill would only take shifts away from others. An alternative would be to make Burns Lake a proving ground for bioenergy, to deal with the huge mass of trees that will never make lumber. Finally, a bright note for Burns Lake. The people and the economy are adapting. A job fair in the village offered entry-level as well as skilled positions at the Houston and Vanderhoof mills. There are more positions on offer at the Mount Milligan and Huckleberry mines and Enbridge, which has gas, solar and wind projects on the go. City council should not impose morality I am writing in response to all the people who have been writing about the Lingerie Football League and the Taboo Sex show. The Gertie Pools and Gerda Peacheys of this world will always have something to say about something. Here is my take on the issue. In our city there seems to be a great divide... the religious and the not so much religious. Morality should not be forced upon us by a city council, nor a

religious body. The arguments used by such people as Eileen Dyck that exhibition of female bodies during such events will only bring out more sexual assaults is ludicrous! Been on a beach? Been to a B.C. Lions game (they have scantily clad cheerleaders)? Come on people, bring your head out of the clouds. This city has been backwards thinking for many years. I have lived here most of

From the City Of Character website I quote: “The City of Character initiative is designed to unite us all under one umbrella of what ‘good character’ or ‘good citizenship’ will look like in our city. A group of 60 city leaders met in April, 2011 and came up with respect, responsibility, integrity, empathy, courage and service as our key concepts or values.” How does LFL equate to this? I would say rather the antithesis: “DIS-respect” for women as they are treated as objects for voyeurs. “IR-responsibility” as we consider how the AESC, funded by our tax dollars has chosen to succumb to a base sport for the sole purpose of bringing income. “Lacking empathy” for women who choose to not flaunt themselves to generate income. Courage... is needed for those to speak up against the “politically correct” opinion that says this type of conduct is fine, and as long as it does not hurt me there is nothing wrong with it. Service...well who is being served here? AESC in a desperate plea for income? As I see it the City of Character needs an adjective to determine what kind of character we want to promote. Jane Welsh

and found it to be very professional and informative and it wasn’t lewd or disgusting as you people think. I have not decided whether I would attend the LFL, but I do defend an adult’s right to attend and also defend the AESC bringing it to us. Tax hike proposal pegged at 1.72% Zero increase suggested, but rejected Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

A municipal tax increase of 1.72 per cent is the latest proposal to be debated by Abbotsford council. Two weeks ago, an increase of 1.52 per cent was presented by city staff, but that figure did not include requests for increases in funding by eight service groups. It also did not consider an appeal by Ledgeview Golf and Country Club for $250,000, or a proposed increase in transit service ($170,000). On Monday, council decided to leave funding for service groups at the same levels as 2011, with the exception of a $25,000 increase to the MSA Museum Society and a $20,000 increase to Abbotsford Restorative Justice. The extra $45,000 equates to a 0.04 per cent tax increase bringing the 1.52 total to 1.56. Abbotsford also incorporated the $170,000 for transit service improvements to reach the 1.72 per cent mark. Council will discuss the Ledgeview request at its March 5 meeting. “Nothing is solidified,” said Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman. “But we’re moving forward right now with the 1.72.” He said council still reserves the right to make modifications. “What I’m thrilled with is that this is under what I campaigned on, which is inflation or growth. Inflation is 2.3 per cent. We’re underneath that, so I’m very pleased, considering the original budget preliminary was six per cent – we’ve come a long way,” said Banman.

But some councillors feel the increase could be even lower. Couns. John Smith and Henry Braun made the argument for a zero per cent increase. Braun said the population information released by Census Canada shows that Abbotsford has not grown as fast as originally anticipated. “When you break down the growth over the last five years, it works out to a yearover-year increase of 1.4 per cent for Abbotsford for the last five years. Our budget and our expenses have been rising at a much faster rate,” said Braun. Using the police budget as an example, he said it is based on 650 people to one police of-

ficer. But the new population figures mean the city actually has a ratio of 618 people to one officer. “I really think we need to have a serious second look at both our police and fire budgets and even city hall, and what we’re doing here,” said Braun. Of the 1.72 per cent tax increase that has been proposed, 1.1 per cent is earmarked for policing. Smith agreed with Braun’s comments, saying more cuts could be found in all departments. “I think we could probably get this budget down to zero, quite frankly,” said Smith. Abbotsford Fire Services is planning to hire five more firefighters in the final quarter

of the year. By hiring late, the move only has a $70,000 impact on this year’s budget, but a total $1.5 million hit over the next four years. Councillors will continue to debate the budget on Feb. 27 and hope to have a final budget proposal by March 5. In order to create a 1.72 tax increase, the city has suggested several cuts, including: T Eliminating the one per cent contribution to capital; T Reduce the existing annual capital contribution by $500,000; T Departmental restructuring; T Reduce litter pickup contract and; T Cutting or deferring of dozens of smaller capital project requests.

Tip received in sex assault

Abbotsford Police are hoping that a tip received during their investigation into the violent sexual assault of a young woman on Feb. 2 will help solve the case. Const. Ian MacDonald said investigators have received â&#x20AC;&#x153;dozens and

dozensâ&#x20AC;? of useful tips, including that a South Asian man wearing a militarystyle dog tag had been seen in the area of the assault. MacDonald said people have reported seeing the man on the day of the incident and on other occasions in the area of Homeview and Pauline streets. He

streets at about 7 p.m. on Feb. 2, when she saw a newer-model white pickup truck pass her twice as she headed east toward a bus stop. As the woman approached the intersection of Pauline and Laurel streets, the passenger exited the truck, grabbed the woman and pushed her into the rear seat. The driver parked the vehicle a short distance away and both men sexually assaulted her. She was then pushed out of the truck and onto the ground in a parking lot in the area of the 34000 block of Gladys Avenue. Both men are South Asian and were heard communicating to each other in Punjabi. The driver is described as in his late 20s, about 5â&#x20AC;&#x2122;10â&#x20AC;?, clean-shaven, with a thin build and short black hair. He was wearing a dark jacket and blue T-shirt. The passenger is described as heavybuilt, in his late 20s to early 30s, about 5â&#x20AC;&#x2122; 11â&#x20AC;? to six feet, with short dark hair and a full beard. At the time of the attack, he was wearing a yellow shirt, grey hoodie and tear-away track pants. Megadeth brings metal spectacle Nicolle HODGES Contributor

It was a night of fist-in-the-air chants as Megadeth took the stage in Abbotsford Monday night. Although one might have expected the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre to be filled with middle-aged rock fans reliving their youth, the ambiance was young and energetic. In an age of computergenerated beats, spectators witnessed three men on electric guitars, and one drummer with amazing stamina, all exuding raw talent. The crowd went wild over the fast-paced guitar solos, demonstrating that the appreciation for true heavy metal spreads across all ages. Megadeth is in the middle of its North American tour, promoting their 13th album, fittingly labeled TH1RT3EN. Members of the band include lead singer/guitarist Dave Mustaine, bassist Dave Ellefson, guitarist Chris Broderick and drummer Shawn Drover. The Gigantour also featured performances by heavy metal superstars including Motörhead, Volbeat and Lacuna Coil. Each band played a five- to six-song set list that included a variety of album classics and new material. Megadeth opened with a pulsing beat that harmonized the crowd into a fist-pumping frenzy. With little use of stage props, besides coloured lights and smoke, the band relied largely on the use of vocals and hard strumming talents for crowd appeal. Touching on familiarity, they played “Ashes in Your Mouth” from an earlier album, and then smoothly transitioned into the song “Guns, Drugs and Money” from their newest album. The open seating area was packed with close to 4,000 head-banging enthusiasts, contributing to the overall scene through crowd surfing and lyrical chants. Megadeth has been rocking since 1983 and has managed to maintain a strong fan base. Mustaine and the gang showed that true metal is timeless.

To be sure, earning the right to host a firstround Canada West playoff series is heady stuff for the University of the Fraser Valley basketball teams. But donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t try telling either of the Cascadesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; hoops squads â&#x20AC;&#x201C; men or women â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re favoured heading into their respective best-ofthree sets, which tip off tonight (Thursday) at the Envision Athletic Centre. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll swat away that notion like a weak finger-roll in the lane. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll relish the role of underdog,â&#x20AC;? asserted UFV menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s head coach Barnaby Craddock, looking ahead to his teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clash with the Lethbridge Pronghorns. Cue the sound of a needle scratching across a record. The underdog label

Ferdinand John Fred Teindl passed away on Feb. 11, 2012 at the age of 89 in the home he built. He is survived by his son Jaimie (Terri-Lynne) and grand children Karisa, Kaeden, Kailee and Billy; brothers Frank, Tony and Herb; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Pat, son Bill, and sister Mary Garvey. Fred was born in Felizienthal, Austria on Nov. 23, 1922. Fred served for his country overseas and was a member in the Knights of Columbus. He owned and operated Teindlâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s jewelry store in Mission with his wife for many years, until he retired from watch repair. He continued to work on hobbies and his talent for wood working. A funeral service was held at St. Josephâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Catholic church on Friday, February 17, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Interment was at Hatzic Cemetery. ROTARY CORNER FEBRUARY IS WORLD UNDERSTANDING MONTH One of the primary objectives of Rotary is to build goodwill and promote peach throughout the world. To help others, we must ﬁrst understand their needs within the context of their own culture, circumstances, and day to day lives. Our local club works with projects internationally. Last year we participated through our District in the building of a school in Afghanistan, and providing materials for the students’ education. This building will provide schooling on an ongoing basis to many children who otherwise would not have an opportunity to attend school. An active member of our club, Ken Funk, a retired businessman, has been personally involved in numerous Rotaplast missions, and is currently a member of their board of directors. These missions involve providing free reconstructive operations to children with cleft lips and/or palates. Each mission assists 100 children, and Ken has been involved in 15 different missions all over the world to-date. He always returns with stories of children’s lives being changed by giving them hope, acceptance and a future. Another program Rotary International is involved with is Polio Plus. Since its inception in 1985, more than two billion children have received oral polio vaccine. All of these projects, while very different, do build goodwill and promote peace.
