The 14th annual Pacific Agriculture Show is on track to set new records. “The exhibitor response has been phenomenal� says Jim Shepard, Show Manager. We are already nearing capacity and are getting creative in looking for ways to find room for new exhibitors. “We have added two tents that will hold the industry lunches and will also provide space for another 20 to 30 exhibitors. “It is frustrating at times when a prospective new exhibitor is looking for a large space or when our current exhibitors want to expand and we simply cannot accommodate them,� added Shepard. “Luckily Tradex recently announced that they will be expanding and the Show will be able to take advantage of the increase in floor space to reach its full potential.� Once again, with more than 250 companies exhibiting the latest equipment, products and techniques for the Ag business – the Pacific Agriculture Show is the place to be for anyone involved in Agribusiness. Show times are Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The admission charge is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors, and children under 14 free. Planning for the 54th annual Horticulture Producers Short Course has been completed. Topics include sessions for the three major berry industries, farm business management, farm direct marketing, organic production and the all-important agrienergy forum. The keynote speaker at the short course will be Dr. Jennifer James, an urban cultural anthropologist who was a professor at the University of Washington Medical School prior to developing her public lectures and corporate seminars, which she presents worldwide. Her unique background (history, psychology and anthropology) has made her one of the most soughtafter speakers in the world. She is a researcher, writer and commentator and has published seven books, numerous academic articles and wrote a newspaper column for the Seattle Times for 18 years. She has filmed two PBS specials titled, “Thinking in the Future Tense� and “A

The latest equipment on display The Pacific Agriculture show continues to be an overwhelming success, and again this year space is limited with both old and new participants seeking more room for their displays. Andy Mitchell of Abbotsford’s Avenue Machinery Corp says last year’s show was excellent, and that he and general manager Tim Drake are looking forward to the 2012 event. Mitchell pointed out that, “the show not only caters to the farmer and those in other agricultural enterprises, but provides a great place for families to come out and enjoy the many displays of farm machinery with the kids having fun climbing on the tractors.” Mitchell says Avenue will introduce their new spray cab tractor unit designed for the berry industry at the 2012 show. With a frontmounted spray boom that is fully adjustable from the cab, it means

The Avenue Machinery exhibit is only part of the overall trade show featuring numerous other displays showcasing advances and improvements in farm operations predicated by the industry’s technological advances.
Dairy Expo The 44th annual BC Dairy Expo on Thursday morning, Jan. 26, in the BMO Room gets underway at 10 a.m. with the focus on lameness, which is regarded as the number one animal welfare issue facing the dairy industry today. This presentation will provide an excellent overview and understanding of the many interrelated factors affecting hoof health. At 10:50 a.m. Doug Johnstone from ARPE Hoof Trimming Ltd. will outline the results of a hoof health pilot study. His presentation will summarize interim findings of this 18-month study in terms of incidence and types of hoof lesions detected in the 75-plus dairy farms which participated in the study. At 11:10 a.m., keynote speaker Dr. Jan Shearer will talk about foot warts, foot baths, foot sprays and foot wraps. This talk will address everything applicable to understanding the underlying causes, treatment and control of the various forms of digital and interdigital dermatitis. New work being done at Iowa State will be presented as well. This talk will be tailored

Dr. Jan Shearer received his DVM degree from Ohio State University in 1975 and worked as a practicing veterinarian in north central Ohio for over four years before returning to Ohio State to complete graduate studies in nutrition. He spent 27 years with the University of Florida as a professor and dairy extension veterinarian before relocating to Iowa State University to serve in a similar position. Dr. Shearer’s primary interests and expertise are with lameness and welfare issues of dairy cattle. The dairy producer barbecue luncheon, sponsored by BDO Chartered Accountants and Advisors, will be an opportunity to enjoy a hearty lunch and network with all

Farmers embracing technology Farm Credit Canada says farmers are very interested in new forms of mobile technology, and at the coming Pacific Agriculture Show they will find the latest innovations. According to a recent FCC study, farmers have been quick to purchase a Smartphone (29 per cent). It’s the same story for tablet use with six per cent of producers owning a tablet. Tablet adoption is expected to be highest among current Smartphone users. More than half (53 per cent) of producers who own a Smartphone today plan to buy a tablet within two years. With a strong web connection, these devices can turn vehicles and farm machinery into a mobile office where producers can conveniently monitor their farm operation, place orders, market products, and monitor weather and interest rates. Getting access to relevant financial data and economic information can be a real advantage in today’s fast-moving marketplace. Innovation has always been a major driver of profitability in agriculture and mobile technology is just one more tool available to gain a competitive edge. Canadian producers are innovative and have historically adopted new technology that will be found at the Pacific Agriculture Show among the many farm machinery displays and related activities. Many career opportunities in agriculture Agriculture provides a large range of career options, and training and education is available locally. Graduates of University of the Fraser Valley agriculture programs are among the most employable graduates in the field across Canada, says a press release from the university in Abbotsford. The variety of careers are vast, with a tremendous diversity among career paths. Graduates of these programs are in high demand, with many job placements even prior to graduation. UFV’s agriculture program prepares grads for entry into the dynamic world of agriculture. Due to the school’s favourable climate and proximity to some of the most fertile land in Canada, the opportunities for field trips and interaction with a wide host of local agricultural and horticultural businesses and organizations is tremendous. Careers in Horticulture For those with education and practical skills, career opportunities in agriculture are excellent. UFV agriculture graduates are successful in finding jobs throughout the horticulture industry. They find employment in greenhouses, golf courses and landscaping companies, as grounds maintenance personnel and as technicians with various levels of government. Others find careers in the agri-business sector in marketing, sales, and service. Some graduates return to family-owned enterprises or start their own small business. Qualified graduates of the diploma option in horticulture are eligible to ladder into the Bachelor of Business Administration for Agriculture Management program at UFV, or transfer to Olds College in Alberta where they will receive transfer credit towards a bachelor of science degree in applied horticulture technology. Careers in Livestock UFV agriculture graduates have success finding jobs in the livestock sector as well as in more general agricultural industries. Sample livestock-related occupations include dairy farm manager or owner/operator, dairy herdsperson, artificial insemination specialist, ranch hand, sales representative for livestock-related supplies, government livestock and forage technician, swineherd production assistant, and poultry producers. Careers in IPM People with integrated pest management training are needed by
the horticulture industry to identify and assess pest problems, and help to recommend and implement management programs. Career opportunities in IPM for qualified applicants are expected to increase over the next several years. Graduates may find work as IPM field scouts in nurseries, greenhouses, or for field crop and/or orchard operations. Graduates may work directly for growers, for IPM consulting firms, or as technicians in various government research programs. Horticulture Options Graduates of the one-year horticulture crop production and protection certificate program will be qualified to seek work as competent assistants in field crop production, in government, as technicians, in greenhouses, nursery greenhouses, garden centres, landscape companies and in grounds maintenance. Some graduates start their own businesses. The one-year horticulture crop production and protection certificate transfers completely to the two-year agriculture technology diploma, horticulture crop production and protection option. Some credits may also transfer to other two-year programs in horticulture. Qualifying students may also be eligible to receive the equivalent of Year I apprenticeship in production horticulture. Students will be actively involved in practical, hands-on activities on the UFV campuses and in the agriculture technology department greenhouses and plant nursery area. All students are required to perform greenhouse-related work on the Chilliwack campus outside of regular class hours. As well, many courses have required field trips at student expense. Livestock Production Students seeking practical training in livestock production can earn a livestock production certificate. Graduates of this program will be qualified to seek employment on dairy farms, as government technicians, in other supply and livestock sectors, and in the agriservice sectors. Some graduates start their own enterprises. The one-year livestock production certificate program transfers completely to the two-year agriculture technology diploma, livestock production option. Graduates may also be able to transfer their livestock production certificate to other agriculture diploma programs.

Growing forward
British Columbia’s agricultural and agri-products sector can increase its competitive edge through funding under a new program to facilitate the development and adoption of innovations in the B.C. agriculture, food and agri-products sector. The $1.5 million Canada-BC AgriInnovation Program is funded through the federal and provincial Growing Forward Agreement. It supports projects that lead to innovation that will enhance profitability and competitiveness, both on-farm and throughout the rest of the supply chain. The Investment Agriculture Foundation delivers this program on behalf of the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture. Businesses, organization and individuals can access up to $250,000 for eligible projects. Examples include: Q Adaptive or applied research; Q Development or demonstration of innovative technologies, processes or products; and Q Projects that support the adoption of product, process or technological innovation.
