SALT SPRING MAN KILLED IN MEXICO SEAN MCINTYRE (Gulf Islands Driftwood)

Condolence messages began pouring onto Robin Wood’s Facebook page yesterday morning, fewer than 12 hours after the Salt Spring Island resident was shot and killed during a home invasion in the resort town of Malaque on Mexico’s Pacific coast. Arvid Chalmers, an island-based realtor who winters in the coastal town, confirmed Wood died before getting transported to hospital. “Unfortunately it is true,” Chalmers wrote in a brief email from Mexico. “We had a home invasion last night by two robbers, one of whom had a pistol. Robin got involved and was shot as a result.” Although Chalmers called police when thieves left the home, emergency personnel Robin Wood could not reach the nearest major hospital, located nearly 20 kilometres away, before his friend passed away. “The robbers left and I called the police, however we did not get to Cihautlan in time,” Chalmers wrote. Wood, 68, was a well-known Salt Springer, former owner of the Beddis Road Garage and mechanic at the old Payless Gas station on Rainbow Road. Chalmers said he is physically fine but heartbroken as a result of the incident. He did not provide any more details about the incident or offer a possible motive for the robbery. Construction and new developments have added $14.69 billion to the total value of real estate in B.C. Properties were also up on average in Surrey and White Rock, with Delta values holding steady and increases of up to 30 per cent for some areas of Richmond. Single-family homes in West Vancouver also increased in a range of 15 to 30 per cent over last year, with demand fuelled by buyers from Asia. Single-family homes in North Van are up five to 10 per cent on average, with condos up less than five per cent. In Greater Victoria, the 144,000 registered properties held steady on average. Most homeowners in the region will see a range from a five-per-cent increase to a two-per-cent decline. Values are stable or down slightly in the North Island, and holding steady in the Comox and Nanaimo regions. Property values for the northwest region including Terrace and Prince Rupert were up on average, with increases ranging from zero to 10 per cent. Summaries for each region and values of individual properties can be viewed at www.bcassessment.ca.

B.C. PROPERTY VALUE NEARS $1 TRILLION TOM FLETCHER (Black Press)

B.C.’s total real estate value increased by 6.54 per cent to $964 billion, according to 2012 values released yesterday by BC Assessment. New construction and development accounted for $14.69 billion of the added value, with the rest coming from assessment increases. More than two million assessment notices are being mailed this month, leaving time for appeals before property taxes are assessed. Values stayed mainly stable in the Fraser Valley for residential homes and strata properties. Total assessed value for the region’s 187,000 properties rose from $85.9 billion last year to $88 billion this year, mostly due to subdivisions, rezoning and new construction.

LEGAL AID LAWYERS BEGIN SERVICE WITHDRAWAL JEFF NAGEL (Black Press)

Legal aid lawyers have now started what they vow will be an escalating strike to press the province to increase funding. It began this week with most lawyers who handle legal aid work refusing to represent new adult clients arrested on criminal charges who cannot afford their own representation. The Jan. 1-7 scheduled withdrawal of duty counsel services expands to two weeks in the first half of February, followed by three weeks in March and then all four weeks of April. The tactic by lawyers threatens to leave many more accused people unrepresented before the courts in order to bring the issue to a head. “It’s not a step they came to lightly,” said Trial Lawyers Association of B.C. communications director Bentley Doyle. “They’re concerned about leaving clients without help. They feel desperate and they hope it’s shortterm pain for long-term gain.” Legal aid funding has been cut by 27 per cent over the last decade, from $96 million in 2001 to about $67 million. An extra $2.1 million announced by the provincial government for child-related legal aid will not make a significant differ-

ence, Doyle said. “Far too many citizens right now do not have legal representation,” he said. Doyle said legal aid should be considered an essential service in B.C. and therefore should be properly funded. The government takes in about $100 million annually in through its provincial tax on legal fees, but the money is not directed toward legal aid, which the tax was created to fund in the first place. Many people before the courts

who previously got legal aid assistance are now forced to represent themselves, causing more slowdowns in an already severely congested legal system. A public commission into legal aid last year concluded B.C. is failing its most disadvantaged citizens and seriously lags other jurisdictions. The provincial government says its new Family Law Act – which encourages mediation and other measures to cut down on court time – will help.

SWING AND A MISS FOR CLUMSY VANDAL GOLDSTREAM NEWS GAZETTE (Black Press)

Saanich police are hunting for a 19-year-old Langford man who dropped his wallet near the scene of a crime. Just after midnight on Dec. 29, police were called to Victoria Bingo Palace on Tillicum Road after witnesses saw a male and female smashing a window with a baseball bat. Officers found the female suspect near the Chevron station on the Trans-Canada Highway. A K9 unit soon spotted the male suspect hiding behind nearby shrubs, who then fled on foot and eluded capture. Fortunately, police investigators scored a bingo after finding a wallet about 30 feet from the smashed window at the Bingo Palace. After discussions with the young woman and a witness, police believe the wallet belongs to the Langford man. “We’re seeking this male. We have his wallet in our care … and he’s welcome to come and claim it,” said Saanich police Sgt. Dean Jantzen. The only piece of ID in the wallet was a birth certificate, Jantzen said, so officers don’t have a current address. If the man does not come forward in the coming days, a warrant for his arrest will be issued. Saanich police headquarters is located at 760 Vernon Ave.

MAN APPEALS CONVICTION IN TEEN KILLING KELOWNA (Canadian Press)

A Kelowna man is filing an appeal of his manslaughter conviction in the death of an 19-year-old woman more than 18 years ago. Forty-seven-year-old Neil Snelson was found guilty by a B.C. Supreme Court jury in October in the beating and strangling death of Jennifer Cusworth in 1993. Cusworth was a college student whose body was found in a ditch the day after she and Snelson attended a house party. He was handed a 15 year sentence after his conviction.

No murders in 2011 —

ABBOTSFORD SHEDS MURDER CAPITAL TITLE VIKKI HOPES (Abbotsford News)

Abbotsford was dubbed the murder capital of Canada for two consecutive years during a violent gang war that spilled into city streets, but the trend has been reversed. Abbotsford Police spokesman Const. Ian MacDonald credits police initiatives and community involvement for diminishing gang violence that led in part to six murders in 2008, 11 in 2009 and four in 2010. There were none in 2011, although MacDonald noted that the 17-year-old male victim of a baseball bat assault in early December is still clinging to life. The 2008 and 2009 figures resulted in Abbotsford recording the most murders per 100,000 population for census metropolitan areas, according to StatsCan. “Many cities when faced with being the ‘homicide

capital’ might have buried their heads in the sand ... or thrown money into a positive tourist campaign,” MacDonald said. Instead, Abbotsford acknowledged the gang issues head-on, MacDonald said. The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) formed the gang suppression unit (GSU) in early 2010 and launched a series of anti-gang programs aimed at youth and parents. The GSU helped stem gang violence at its core, by identifying and/or arresting key players in organized crime MacDonald said. Grow-ops and dial-a-dope operations were busted, halting a prime source of gang revenue. The goal was to make Abbotsford known as a bad place for criminals to do business, MacDonald said. Edmonton was named Canada’s murder capital for 2011, with 45 slayings last year.

HOMEOWNER SITS ON INTRUDER UNTIL COPS ARRIVE SAANICH NEWS (Black Press)

A Saanich homeowner was able to subdue an intruder by sitting on him until police arrived in the early hours of Dec. 30. Around 2 a.m. the Brodick Crescent resident was woken up when his front door was loudly kicked in. He went to his living room to investigate, and saw a man hiding behind his Christmas tree. When confronted, the intruder tried to flee before he was restrained by the home’s occupant. Saanich police said the suspect was “screaming for help from police” when officers arrived. The suspect, an intoxicated 27-year-old Saanich man, was arrested.

WOMAN, 83, SEXUALLY ASSAULTED IN HOSPITAL DUNCAN (Canadian Press)

The RCMP in B.C. are investigating a sex assault on an 83-year-old woman in a hospital. The woman was a patient in the Cowichan District Hospital in Duncan when she was attacked on Dec. 21. Police say a 46-year-old man who was also a patient at the hospital was arrested shortly after the attack and is scheduled to appear in court next month on a charge of sexual assault.

MAN USES IPAD PASSPORT SCAN TO ENTER U.S. MONTREAL (Canadian Press)

A Canadian man has found an unusual way to get through U.S. Customs – by flashing an iPad. Martin Reisch says a U.S. border officer let him cross after he presented only a scanned copy of his passport on the computer tablet. The Montrealer says he was about a half-an-hour drive from the Vermont border last week when he realized he had forgotten his passport at home. Reisch remembered he had stored a scanned copy of the document on his iPad and decided to attempt to

cross, instead of turning his car around for the twohour drive home. “I figured I’d try, and in the worst case, I would have to go home,” he said Tuesday. Reisch, 33, said he explained his situation to the customs agent, who seemed mildly annoyed when he handed him the iPad. “He kind of gave me a stare, like neither impressed nor amused,” Reisch said of their exchange last Friday in southern Quebec. The officer took the iPad into the border office for five minutes before coming back out to give Reisch the green light and wish him happy holidays. “He was very nice about it,” he said of the officer. A spokeswoman for the department did not immediately respond to questions yesterday on whether scanned passports are also commonly accepted at U.S. points of entry. Reisch said he also successfully used the passport on his iPad to get through Canadian Customs on the way home later that day.

SHOULD CANADA SEVER TIES WITH THE BRITISH MONARCHY? OTTAWA (Torstar)

Liberal party members will be debating whether Canada should sever its ties to the monarchy when they meet in Ottawa this month.

A policy resolution, calling for an elected Canadian head of state, has been put on the policy agenda of the Liberal convention by the youth wing of the party. The prospect of cutting ties to the monarchy flies in the face of Conservative efforts in recent years to boost the royal image – and runs counter to polling last year that showed Canadians are still largely in favour of those

CASE OF GRENADA COPS PUT OVER TO FRIDAY ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada (Canadian Press)

Five police officers arrested in connection with the beating death of a Toronto man made a brief court appearance in Grenada today before the matter was moved to a different jurisdiction. Grenada Police superintendent Dunbar Belfon says the preliminary inquiry will be heard Friday in St. David’s, where the alleged incident took place. The officers are charged with manslaughter in the death of 39-year-old Oscar Bartholomew, the man relatives say was beaten into a coma after he hugged a plainclothes policewoman he’d mistaken for a friend last week.

FEWER PARDONS EXPECTED DUE TO TOUGHER RULES OTTAWA (Canadian Press)

The number of bona fide applicants for a criminal pardon is expected to plunge by almost half under stricter new rules. Internal figures show the Parole Board of Canada expects to evaluate about 15,000 pardon applications annually, down from 27,750. A law passed last year toughened the requirements and, in some cases, increased the waiting times for pardon applicants.

CONGO’S FUTURE UNCLEAR, CANADIAN SOLDIER SAYS OTTAWA (Canadian Press)

The senior Canadian soldier serving in the restive Democratic Republic of Congo says it’s unclear whether the worst of the post-election violence in the country has passed. But Col. Rick Fawcett says it is clear that Canada has a role to play in helping the Central Africa country develop. UN troops were instrumental in readying the country for its presidential and legislative elections in November, but Fawcett says it was clear the country itself wasn’t logistically prepared for the challenge.

COURT SUGGESTS NATIONAL DATA ON EXCITED DELIRIUM CALGARY (Canadian Press)

A fatality inquiry into the death of a Calgary man during an encounter with police recommends there be a national database on excited delirium. The inquiry report says Gordon Bowe died in November 2008 of excited delirium brought on by cocaine in his body. The inquiry report says the national Association of Chiefs of Police should create a database to record and share details about deaths related to excited delirium. It also says there should be consistent and enforced reporting on police use of force in such cases.

OCCUPY PROTEST IN FREDERICTON DISMANTLED FREDERICTON (Canadian Press)

Fredericton’s mayor says the Occupy protest in that city has been dismantled. Brad Woodside says a city work crew took down the encampment without incident around 5 a.m. Woodside says one city police officer was on hand to observe. Workers took down a tent housing three protesters in a small square near city hall. Woodside had set a deadline of Jan. 1 and said he again warned the protesters during a final meeting on New Year’s Eve that action would be taken. The camp had been in place since Oct. 15.

A Twitter account purported to be linked to the wife of media mogul Rupert Murdoch has turned out to be bogus. Twitter spokeswoman Rachel Bremer said yesterday that the popular microblogging site “mistakenly verified” the “Wendi–Deng” account as genuine for a short time. The person who opened the “Wendi–Deng” account tweeted Tuesday that it had been a spoof. News International spokeswoman Daisy Dunlop said while the account was fake, the Twitter account opened over the New Year’s weekend by News Corp. chief Rupert Murdoch was genuine.

The new head of the UN food agency says he expects food prices to stay volatile in 2012 – and more people to go hungry. Jose Graziano da Silva, Brazil’s former food security minister, took over as director-general of the Food and Agriculture Organization Jan. 1. He told reporters yesterday his top priority was to make good on the agency’s mandate: eradicate world hunger. Graziano acknowledged that Europe’s anticipated recession this year could affect his effort, with countries reneging on their annual FAO dues.

Pumping their fists and chanting, tens of thousands of North Koreans packed the snowy main square of the capital yesterday to pledge their loyalty to new leader Kim Jong Un as the campaign to consolidate his power deepened. State television also aired footage of Kim’s recent visit to an elite tank unit with family and historical ties that showed him interacting with soldiers with ease and carrying out inspections much like father Kim Jong Il and grandfather Kim Il Sung did before him – footage that aimed to show off his youth and health and put his confidence and authority on display.

Islamists looked to seal their domination of Egypt’s first democratically elected parliament as Egyptians voted yesterday in the final round of multistage elections. The end of voting and the convening of parliament, due on Jan. 23, could set the stage for jostling for authority between the ruling military and MPs. The two sides must work out how to put together a 100-member panel to draft a new constitution. The military has said that presidential elections would be held by the end of June, but it has yet to say whether the new constitution should come before the vote.

The Pentagon answered an Iranian warning to keep U.S. aircraft carriers out of the Persian Gulf yesterday by declaring that American warships will continue regularly scheduled deployments to the strategic waterway. George Little, the Pentagon press secretary, said the Navy operates in the Gulf in accordance with international law and to maintain “a constant state of high vigilance” to ensure the flow of sea commerce. Iran has been holding naval exercises near the Strait at the mouth of the Gulf, which is a critically important passage for international oil supplies.

MOM OF MURDERED U.K. BLACK TEEN VOICES ANGER AT POLICE LONDON (Associated Press)

In a case that exposed racism and incompetence in Scotland Yard and took nearly two decades to bring anyone to justice, a jury found two men guilty yesterday of brutally stabbing a black teenager to death. Gary Dobson, 36, and David Norris, 35, were convicted of killing 18-year-old Stephen Lawrence as he waited for a night bus in southeast London in 1993. The pair will be sentenced today and face life in prison. “Had the police done their job properly, I would have spent the last 18 years grieving for my son rather than fighting Doreen Lawrence to get his killers to court,” said Lawrence’s mother, Doreen. The investigation led to strong criticism of London Police and resulted in an investigation that found the force was “institutionally racist” and had bungled evidence-gathering. Arrests weren’t made until two weeks after the murder. Then – in 1996 – three of the suspects – Neil Acourt, Luke Knight and Dobson – were acquitted. In 2004, prosecutors announced there was “insufficient evidence” to pursue anyone for the murder amid allegations of police corruption. But new forensic evidence uncovered in 2007 helped save the case.

Mitt Romney was in a death match against Rick Santorum last night in the first official contest of the Republican race for the presidential nomination, a state of affairs that underscored the No. 1 issue plaguing his campaign for months. The party’s primary voters don’t like him. He praised them for the “energy you have and the effort you have made” as they cheered when he urged the U.S. to stop waging wars overseas. “This movement is going to continue and we are going to keep scoring, just as we have tonight,” an energetic Paul, 76, told them at the end of the night. The night was a particular triumph for Santorum, however, the latest to benefit from the “anyone but Romney” movement among Republican primary voters that has been a hallmark of the race since it unofficially kicked off last spring. Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry, Herman Cain and

Newt Gingrich before him have all briefly surged past Romney, despite the depth and breadth of his war chest and his well-oiled political machine. But Paul has been polling high in Iowa for months, while Santorum, who campaigned hard, ascended from the basement of opinion surveys to become a top-tier candidate in the state. Gingrich has been lashing out aggressively against Romney for days, even calling him a liar earlier in the day as he reiterated accusations that Romney and his “millionaire friends” were behind a series of negative ads about the former speaker of the House of Representatives.

MAN ARRESTED IN L.A. ARSON SPREE LIVED IN VANCOUVER

VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

Court documents confirm a German national arrested in a series of more than 50 arson attacks in the Los Angeles area previously lived with his mother for several years in Vancouver. Harry Burkhart and his mother, Dorothee, both filed failed refugee claims that were eventually dismissed in May 2010, while the son was also charged with a traffic offence in B.C. and his mother went through small claims court. The 24-year-old Hollywood resident is now being held without bail and is set to make his first court appearance today in the case that terrorized the community over the Christmas weekend. In May 2010, the pair were both denied applications for judicial review of their failed Canadian refugee claims. Other court records show the man was charged back in October 2009 for failing to carry a licence in a motor vehicle, while his mother sued a commercial landlord over her security deposit in December 2009. Dorothee Burkhart, who is in her 50s, made her own court appearance yesterday in relation to charges of 19 counts of fraud in Frankfurt, and at one point, told the court her son is mentally ill.

WAR HORSE, THE HELP AMONG PRODUCERS GUILD NOMINEES LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)

The historical epic War Horse, the Deep South drama The Help, the silent ďŹ lm The Artist and the wedding comedy Bridesmaids are in the running for top honours from the Producers Guild of America. Also nominated yesterday for the guild’s big ďŹ lm prize are two George Clooney tales: the family drama The Descendants and the political saga The Ides of March. Two Paris stories made the cut, the family adventure Hugo and the romantic fantasy Midnight in Paris. Rounding out the 10 nominees are the thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the sports tale Moneyball. Animated contenders for the Jan. 21 awards are The Adventures of Tintin, Cars 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots and Rango. Along with honours from other Hollywood professional groups such as actors, directors and writers guilds, the producer prizes help sort out contenders for the Academy Awards, whose nominations come out Jan. 24. The Producers Guild ďŹ eld represents a heavy-hitting lineup of Oscar winners and nominees, including Steven Spielberg (War Horse and Tintin), Martin Scorsese (Hugo), Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris), David Fincher (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Alexander Payne (The Descendants) and Bennett Miller (Moneyball).

Besides starring in The Descendants, Clooney multi-tasked on Ides of March, directing, producing, co-starring and co-writing the ďŹ lm. The Producers Guild also honours television, with 30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory, Glee, Modern Family and Parks and Recreation up for the TV comedy series award.

NBC’S SUPER BOWL AD SPOTS NOW ENTIRELY SOLD OUT

INDIANAPOLIS (Associated Press)

Super Bowl spots are still the hottest ticket in advertising. NBC has sold all the commercial airtime for the Feb. 5 game in Indianapolis and even has a waiting list of advertisers. The average cost for a 30-second spot this year was $3.5 million US, with some time slots costing as much as $4 million. Seth Winter, senior vice-president of NBC Sports group sales & marketing, said the last time slot was sold just after the U.S. Thanksgiving. Slots are still available during the pregame show, and those on the waiting list for the Super Bowl will have an opportunity to advertise if other companies give up their slot. “There are the usual companies that have supported it in the past, Winter said. “Automotive will be very healthy. Beverages will be very healthy. “The movie and snack category continue to be healthy. There will be a few new players and some who have been there, who won’t be there. Winter declined to identify which companies bought ads or dropped out, fearing it could tip off competitors.

DAKOTA FANNING GETS UNHAPPILY WED IN NEWEST FILM, EFFIE

BONNIE RAITT SET TO RELEASE FIRST ALBUM IN 7 YEARS

WEST WYCOMBE (Associated Press)

NASHVILLE (Associated Press)

Bonnie Raitt is releasing a new album in 2012, her first in seven years. Slipstream, out April 10, follows a long break from studio work for the Grammy-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member. She lost her parents, her brother and her best friend. “I hadn’t stopped moving in a very long time so I really wanted to take a total break and not concentrate on making a new record or what I was going to do next,” Raitt said. “So that was really valuable because I waited until I was really ready to come back.” Slipstream is the slide guitarist’s first album since 2005’s Souls Alike and will be the first release on her own record label, Redwing Records. The album will feature four songs recorded with producer Joe Henry and his musicians, which she describes as experimental. She says she’s thrilled with the resulting eclectic mix of blues, rock and soul. She covers Bob Dylan’s Million Miles and Standing in the Doorway, and Loudon Wainwright III’s You Can’t Fail Me Now. “It’s just a new batch of great songs,” Raitt said.

It was a love triangle that shocked Victorian England – a tale of passion and duty, tradition and freedom seething beneath corsets and waistcoats. Now it’s coming back to life on screen, with a 21st-century behind-the-scenes drama thrown in. Effie, which features 17-year-old Dakota Fanning in one of her first adult roles, tells the story of the disastrous marriage between 19th-century art critic John Ruskin and his young bride Effie Gray. It was a train wreck of a union, a collision of opposites that ended after Effie fell truly, madly, scandalously in love with wild-eyed young artist John Everett Millais. “It’s the ultimate bad marriage,” said Emma Thompson, the Academy Award-winning actress and writer behind Effie’s screenplay. She said she was drawn to the story by its “archetypal quality.” “It happens to be a costume drama, but you could be doing a story with this kind of complexity and oddness in any period,”

Thompson said on the set. She’s not alone in seeing the story’s potential. Two writers have come forward to accuse Thompson of copying their work, claims she and her producers deny.

ALL GROWN UP

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Dakota Fanning stars as Effie Gray in Effie, out later this year.

Playwright Gregory Murphy alleges similarities with his play and screenplay The Countess. He has claimed that Effie is “distinctly related to my own screenplay in its timeframe, character development, structure and tone.” Eve Pomerance maintains the script has passages similar to her own unproduced screenplay, The Secret Trials of Effie Gray. Effie producer Donald Rosenfeld accuses Pomerance and Murphy of “fortune hunting,” and has hit back with lawsuits in a U.S. court against both writers, seeking a declaration by a judge that there are no copyright issues involved. “We’ve never had any contact with these people,” he said. “They did not have anything to do with the movie.” Ruskin married Gray in 1848, when he was 29 and she was 19. On the couple’s wedding night, something about his bride so horrified Ruskin that the union was not consummated. Ruskin maintained it was her personality, but Gray later wrote that her husband “had imagined women were quite different to what he saw I was.” ADD YOUR

RRSPS STILL PRIORITY FOR MANY, SURVEY FINDS TORONTO (Canadian Press)

A national survey indicates more than two-thirds of Canadians plan to contribute the same amount or more to their RRSP as last year. During the 2010 tax year, Canadians contributed an average of $4,700 to their RRSPs. Of those not planning to make a contribution or contributing less this year, 38 per cent said they have other expenses. The Leger Marketing survey for BMO Financial Group indicates 71 per cent of Canadians are concerned about the performance of their RRSPs. The survey also found 36 per cent are not conďŹ dent in their ability to save for retirement, compared to just 18 per cent during the 2010 tax year. The online survey was conducted in late November by Leger Marketing with a sample of 1,520 Canadians, 18 years of age or older.

CAW CHIEF SEES TOUGH YEAR FOR LABOUR IN 2012 OTTAWA (Canadian Press)

New Years lockouts at two major industrial plants in central Canada – an Alcan smelter in Quebec and a locomotive plant in London, Ont. – may signal a tough year ahead in Canadian labour relations. Canadian Auto Workers president Ken Lewenza said the lockouts suggest 2012 will be a difďŹ cult year for organized labour as his union prepares for the next round of negotiations with major North American automakers and governments look to cut spending. “We are anticipating some real challenges to defend the interests of our members,â€? he said. Lewenza pointed to the erosion of the manufacturing sector in Canada and high unemployment as key challenges for workers across the country – both union and non-union.

CANADA’S COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT AGAINST RUSSIA CALGARY (Canadian Press)

Canada will not play for gold at the world junior hockey championship for the first time in over a decade. The host country lost 6-5 to Russia in the semifinal yesterday, despite a four-goal burst in the third period. Russia will meet Sweden for gold, while Canada faces Finland for bronze tomorrow. “They scored early. We didn’t react as well as we should have,” Canadian forward Brett Connolly said. “We’ve got to be better.” The defending-champion Russians scored five times in the third period to beat Canada 5-3 in last year’s final in Buffalo, N.Y. Russia now has a chance at winning its first back-to-back titles since 2002 and 2003. Russian captain Evgeni Kuznetsov, the lone returning player from last year’s squad, was a oneman wrecking crew with three goals and an assist. Defencemen Nikita Nesterov and Alexander Khokhlachev and forward Nikita Kucherov also scored for the Russians. Nail Yakupov, who plays for the Ontario Hockey League’s Sarnia Sting, had three assists. “We win. We’re pretty excited,” Yakupov said. “We

beat Canada. Russia’s better than Canada.” Connolly replied for Canada early in the second period. Trailing 6-1 in the third, Dougie Hamilton, Jaden Schwartz, Brendan Gallagher and Brandon Gormley all scored for Canada in just under a fiveminute span starting at 9:27. Canada outshot Russia 56-24, but didn’t bury enough chances early in the game. Andrei Vasilevski stopped 44 of 49 shots, but was replaced by Andrei Makarov after Gormley’s goal at 4:17. Makarov stopped all seven shots he faced. Canada pressed for the equalizer, but couldn’t get it. Ryan Strome hit the post and Connolly had a chance at his rebound with less than a minute remaining. Canada’s starting goaltender Scott Wedgewood allowed four goals on 14 shots. He left the game at 8:48 of the second period when Khokhlachev crashed into the net on Kuznetsov’s third goal. Mark Visentin replaced him, stopping eight of 10 shots. Canada played in the final every year from 2002 to 2011 with a 5-5 record. Canada had gone undefeated in four games in the preliminary round. They’d outscored their opposition 9-0 in the first period and 26-5 overall.

HABS COACH VOWS TO LEARN FRENCH BROSSARD, Que. (Canadian Press)

Don’t count out Randy Cunneyworth returning as head coach of the Montreal Canadiens next season. Cunneyworth said yesterday he is working on learning French and hopes that significant strides will be made by the LIFE IN time the decision is made on who will be behind the bench next season. QUEBEC Owner Geoff Molson and general manager Pierre Gauthier have promised they will have a coach who can speak French in place for the 2012-13 campaign. That appeared to rule out the unilingual Cunneyworth, but the Toronto-born interim coach doesn’t see himself as a lame duck who will be gone at the end of the season. “With any team, it can be uncertain if you don’t win or accomplish the goals you set forth,” he said. “I’m working hard to pick up the language as much as I can and as quickly as I can. “Hopefully that will be the case by the time some of the decisions are made. A lot will depend on how successful this team is and that’s really my priority right now. The language is secondary, but very important as well for me because I think it’s an important marketplace where I’d love to be able to address everybody in both languages and talk to everybody concerning hockey.” There was an outcry among the club’s many French-speaking fans when Cunneyworth was promoted to head coach after the Dec. 15 firing of Jacques Martin. He became the club’s first coach unable to speak at least some French in four decades. The Canadiens are 1-6-0 since Cunneyworth took over and have dropped to 13th place in the Eastern Conference.

BEARS FIRE GM AFTER TEAM CRUMBLES LAKE FOREST, Ill. (Associated Press)

Jerry Angelo was fired as the Chicago Bears’ general manager yesterday following a team collapse marked by injuries to Jay Cutler and Matt Forte and a drug scandal involving receiver Sam Hurd. Angelo had been on the job 11 years, a stretch in which the Bears reached one Super Bowl and advanced to another NFC championship game. An 8-8 record this season, a questionable draft record and an inability to fill big holes, particularly on offence, led to his ouster. His dismissal comes after a wild season in which the Bears at one point seemed a lock to make the playoffs. A fivegame losing streak, however, spoiled a 7-3 start and kept Chicago out of the playoffs for the fourth time in five years. Cutler broke his right thumb trying to help make a tackle following an interception during a win over San Diego on Nov. 20. The Bears didn’t win again until the season-finale in Minnesota on Sunday. It didn’t help that Forte sprained a ligament in his right knee against Kansas City on Dec. 4, leaving the offence without its two best players. Those would be blows for any team, but they were crippling for Chicago. Throw in Hurd’s arrest on federal drug charges in midDecember, and what looked like a promising season turned into a disaster for the team and organization.

RIM CO-CEOS NAMED 2011’S TOP BIZ NEWSMAKERS MONTREAL (Canadian Press)

MURDER MOST FOUL ON QUEEN’S COUNTRY ESTATE LONDON (Associated Press)

It’s a case that Sherlock Holmes would have loved to unravel: British police say a woman’s body has been found at the vast rural estate where Queen Elizabeth II and her family celebrated New Year’s. Police are treating the case as a murder, and an autopsy was conducted yesterday to learn more about the cause of death and the identity of the victim. The body was found on New Year’s Day 5 kilometres from the elegant country home of Sandringham in eastern England, where the royals held a New Year’s Day celebration in rural splendor. Parts of the nearly 20,000-acre estate are open to the public, and the body was found in a forest at Anmer, a hamlet of several dozen people 185 kilometres northeast of London on the estate grounds. Most of the senior royals were at the sprawling Sandringham estate, where the queen loves to celebrate Christmas with her husband, children and grandchildren. So far, there are more questions than answers about the strange discovery, which has shaken the normally quiet region where the

ISRAELIS, PALESTINIANS AGREE TO RESUME LOW LEVEL DIALOGUE AMMAN, Jordan (Associated Press)

The first meeting between Israeli and Palestinian peace negotiators in more than a year ended without any significant breakthroughs yesterday, but in a small sign of progress, the sides agreed to continue the dialogue, officials said. Resumption of any kind of contacts would be an important achievement, though Israel and the Palestinians remain far from agreement on key issues to resolve their decades-long conflict. The 15-month breakdown in negotiations has seen a progressive souring of the atmosphere, and earlier yesterday, the Palestinian president had warned of taking tough measures against Israel if talks don’t resume by Jan. 26. Jordan’s foreign minister, Nasser Judeh, who hosted the gathering in the Jordanian capital Amman, expressed some hope. “The important thing is the two sides have met face to face today,” he said. While acknowledging there were no breakthroughs in “substance,” he praised the positive atmosphere and said sides had agreed to hold further talks, some in secret.

queen and her family typically enjoy riding horses and holding shooting parties. Buckingham Palace officials are keeping mum about the murder case, referring callers to the police, and police have released few details. It is not yet clear how old the victim was, how long her body had been in the woods, if she was murdered on the grounds or if her remains were put there.

“We are at the very early stages of the investigation and it could be a complex inquiry,” Detective Chief Inspector Jes Fry said yesterday. “The body had been there for some time.” Fry said authorities were examining missing person reports and unsolved cases around the country to see if there were any possible links. “The body was found by a dog walker and was not underground. At this stage we do not know who the victim is,” he said. The estate has two stud farms and a fruit farm and employs more than 100 full-time staff.
