MLA BEGINS WELFARE CHALLENGE

L.A. ARSON SUSPECT DRIVING WITH B.C. PLATES

KEVIN DIAKIW (Surrey Leader)

LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)

Authorities arrested a German man yesterday in connection with dozens of suspected arson attacks that destroyed parked cars, scorched buildings and rattled much of the second-largest U.S. city over the New Year’s weekend. Harry Burkhart, 24, was booked for investigation of arson of an inhabited dwelling and was being held without bail, authorities said. Authorities said they didn’t know how long the German national has been in the United States. Police said he told arresting officers he’s from Frankfurt. Burkhart was arrested earlier in the day because he resembled a “person of interest” captured on surveillance video. He was stopped by a reserve sheriff ’s deputy in a van being sought by arson investigators, who did not rule out the possibility that others may be involved. More than 50 blazes have flared since Friday in Hollywood, neigh-

Firefighters have not responded to any other suspicious fires since Burkhart was detained. According to several media reports, the suspect was driving a vehicle with B.C. licence plates. Police declined to reveal any motive for the fires. When asked at a news conference about reports that an immigration problem with Burhkart’s mother may have been a factor, authorities declined to comment.

Most of the fires began in cars, and authorities have not said how they were started. The blazes forced many apartment dwellers from their homes. But there were no serious injuries – one firefighter was hurt in a fall from a ladder, and another person suffered smoke inhalation. One of Saturday’s fires occurred at the Hollywood and Highland entertainment complex, a popular tourist destination bordered by the Walk of Fame in a neighbourhood that includes Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.

With 50 cents in his pocket, money given to him by his children, a Surrey MLA hit the streets on Sunday hoping to make it through January living on the provincial monthly welfare rate of $610. Jagrup Brar, MLA for Surrey-Fleetwood, was challenged by a group called Raise the Rates in May to try living on $610 for the month of January, the same amount social services provides to people who are expected to look for work. Brar accepted, and began the challenge on Jan. 1. Because Sunday and Monday were holidays, he would have been unable to collect a welfare cheque as government offices were closed. So he hit the streets with 50 cents in his pocket – money his children gave him for a phone call if he got into trouble. On Sunday night, he tried to get shelter at the Front Room drop-in centre in Whalley, but it was full. He ended up sleeping on a mat at Surrey Urban Mission, according to a constituency staffer. Brar said in a release that he understands the limitations of his exercise. “I know clearly that I will not fully experience what ‘being on welfare’ is like when I live on $610 for the month of January,” Brar said. “I haven’t lost a job or a family or become disabled or sick, all reasons why many people are on welfare. I won’t be or feel shamed like many are when they apply for welfare. I won’t have to worry about paying school fees for my kids or feeding them nutritious food, or about how my kids will feel shamed when they can’t pay fees, afford to play hockey, or have nice clothes like other kids have.”

ANOTHER ECSTASY OVERDOSE HITS ABBOTSFORD VIKKI HOPES (Abbotsford News)

A 24-year-old Abbotsford woman is battling for her life after ingesting ecstasy with three friends on New Year’s Eve. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the woman, whose name has not been released, was at a home on George Ferguson Way when she became unconscious and unresponsive. She was treated on scene at about 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day by BC Ambulance and Abbotsford Fire Rescue personnel before being transported to hospital. MacDonald said the women, ages 23 to 31, took “numerous” blue ecstasy pills throughout the evening, starting at the residence. They then went out for the night and returned to the home, ingesting the last pills at about 4 a.m. The friends indicated that the victim consumed more pills than they did, MacDonald said. This is the second ecstasy overdose in Abbotsford in less than two weeks. Cheryl McCormack, 17, died Dec. 22 after taking ecstasy with three other friends during a sleep-over on Dec. 19. McCormack’s friends indicated that the girls had been taking the drug, which can suppress appetite,

to aid in weight loss. In the latest case, the women were using ecstasy solely as a recreational drug, MacDonald said. He said police want the public to be aware of the risks of using illicit drugs. “My concern is that, for whatever reason, it (ecstasy) is in vogue right now ... Either this is gaining popularity in our city or people who are supplying it are market-

ing it more ... or doing something to ensure it’s getting out there more.” Police are trying to track down the source of the drug in the two overdoses. Ecstasy causes an increase in body temperature, blood pressure and heart rate, which can lead to kidney or heart failure, strokes and seizures, according to Health Canada.

PHILANTHROPIST MILTON WONG DIES AT 72 VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

Business leader and philanthropist Milton Wong, who grew up among eight siblings in Vancouver’s Chinatown and later helped broker British Columbia’s first modern-day land claims agreement, has died at age 72. His niece, Joanna Wong, says her uncle was surrounded by loved ones when he succumbed to pancreatic cancer on Saturday. Wong was instrumental in helping to structure land claim and business partnerships for First Nations and also played a role in the Nisga’a Treaty in 1998. He served as chancellor of Simon Fraser University from 1999 to 2005 and raised money for organizations such as the BC Cancer Foundation, the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. Premier Christy Clark, NDP Leader Adrian Dix and Mayor Gregor Robertson said Wong, who received the Order of Canada, enriched many lives with his contributions to cultural harmony, education and public service. A memorial service will be held later this month for Wong, who is survived by his wife, three daughters and three grandchildren.

THREE KILLED AFTER MOBILE-HOME FIRE EAGLE VALLEY NEWS (Black Press)

A Sunday night fire at a mobile home on Green Road South has claimed the life of three people. A 28-year-old man and his two sons, ages three and four perished in the fire. An RCMP news release confirms the man’s 25-year-old wife and mother of the two boys was not at home at the time of the fire. “Preliminary findings indicate the fire is not suspicious in nature,” says Sicamous Detachment’s Sgt. Carl Vinet in an RCMP news release.

MASKED MAN SLIPS UP IN ROBBERY ATTEMPT ALEX BROWNE (Peace Arch News)

A masked man seemed to have foiled his own robbery attempt at TD Canada Trust in South Surrey Dec. 29 – just prior to the branch’s closing time – before fleeing on foot across the street and into the Wal-Mart parking lot. Surrey RCMP said the man – clad in black clothing, gloves and full ski mask – walked into the bank, at 2411 160 St., around 7:56 p.m., then beat a hasty retreat after he slipped and fell to the floor, without making contact with staff or customers. No cash appears to have been taken in the incident, police said. Customer Pierre Paris said he arrived at the bank

just before 8 p.m. and was using the ATM machine when three RCMP cruisers pulled up to the TD building and officers began speaking to witnesses and bank employees. “They were looking everywhere,” Paris said, adding that he heard the details of the incident from a witness inside the bank, who was speaking to an RCMP officer. Surrey RCMP said they did not call in a police dog team because of the large amount of foot traffic around the bank. Information from bank employees indicates a similar looking man had been seen in the area previously. – with files from Nick Greenizan

The driver of an ATV was killed Jan. 1 after going off an embankment on the Kamloops Shuswap Road. Chase RCMP responded to a request from the B.C. Ambulance Service at 7 a.m. in the Pritchard area. Two riders on a single ATV were driving on the road when it failed to make a left turn and went off a steep embankment. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the passenger was transported to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops with undisclosed, but not life-threatening injuries. The identity of the victim has not been released.

A 58-year-old man has died after falling ill at the Surrey RCMP detachment, prompting an external investigation into the death. On Dec. 23, the man was arrested by Surrey RCMP for breaching a court order. Three days later, he laid down on the floor of his cell, and RCMP staff asked Emergency Health Services (who were there on an unrelated matter) to check the man. He was transported to hospital, where he died. The matter has been given to the Vancouver Police department for investigation.

CHARTER RIGHT DEFENCE

CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA (Canadian Press)

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird says his department’s new Office of Religious Freedom won’t become a vehicle for playing domestic politics in Canada’s immigrant communities. Baird dismissed criticism that the new office could lead to an uncomfortable mix of religion and politics. “Freedom of religion is one of the first things in

the Charter, it’s one of the first things in the Bill of Rights, it’s front and centre in the UN Declaration of Human Rights _ it’s an essential human right; I don’t see any concern about that at all,’’ Baird said. The Tories announced the creation of the office in their federal election platform last spring, but they have yet to roll out details of the new entity, to be housed within Foreign Affairs. The government is expected to formally announce the new office early this year. Alex Neve, the head of Amnesty International Canada, says that while religious persecution “is a serious human rights concern right around the world’’ he’s not confident about the government’s approach to the new office. “We’re watching it with interest but also with considerable concern,’’ said Neve. “There is such complete secrecy about it.’’

If the federal government wants to cut costs, it may want to put bureaucrats through driving school. The government’s books show fender benders involving federal vehicles in recent years cost taxpayers $28 million in repairs or write-offs. At least 8,511 motor-vehicle accidents have been reported in the Public Accounts of Canada since the 2000-01 fiscal year. Two-thirds of the overall cost of collisions came from the Mounties. Vehicle accidents involving RCMP members cost the government $18.8 million.

Residents of a Montreal apartment building have begun the new year by coping with a fire that forced 35 people from their building yesterday while arson investigators were being called in. No one was injured in the blaze in the city’s Rosemont district which broke out yesterday shortly after 8 a.m. Firefighters responded quickly to the blaze. Even though the flames had spread to the top floor of the three-storey brick structure, they were able to bring it under control in about an hour.

A lost harp seal rang out the new year on an ice floe near Montreal – hundreds of kilometres from its salt-water home. Locals were stunned to see the marine mammal relaxing on a chunk of ice west of the city in Lac-St-Louis on New Year’s Eve. Robert Michaud, the co-ordinator of a marine mammal rescue organization, says the wayward seal probably got lost and swam down the St. Lawrence River from the saltier St. Lawrence Estuary. He says the healthy looking seal will probably be left to find its own way home.

The Palestinians are downplaying expectations ahead of their first meeting with Israelis in more than a year. The chief Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat, and Israeli envoy Yitzhak Molcho are set to meet in Jordan today. Negotiations have been stalled since September 2010. Erekat said yesterday that he doesn’t expect any breakthroughs unless Israel agrees to halt settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. He also says Israel must accept its 1967 lines as the basis for a future border. Israel captured the West Bank and east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war.

The trial of Hosni Mubarak has resumed amid speculation that a recent acquittal of policemen tried for killing Egyptian protesters could be a prelude to the dismissal of charges against the ousted leader. Mubarak faces charges of complicity in the killing of more than 800 protesters during last year’s uprising that toppled his regime. The 83-year-old Mubarak was brought by helicopter to the Cairo courthouse yesterday from a hospital. He was then taken into the defendants’ cage on a gurney, wearing dark sunglasses and covered by a green blanket.

Hundreds of Ethiopian troops moved into Beledweyne on Saturday, opening a third front against alShabab militants, who also face Kenyan troops in Somalia’s south and African Union troops in the capital, Mogadishu.

Boarding an airplane has never been safer in the U.S. The past 10 years have been the best in the country’s aviation history with 153 fatalities. That’s two deaths for every 100 million passengers on commercial flights, according to an AP analysis of government data. Just a decade earlier, at the time the safest, passengers were 10 times as likely to die when flying on an American plane. The risk of death was even greater during the start of the jet age, with 1,696 people dying – 133 out of every 100 million passengers – from 1962 to 1971. The figures exclude acts of terrorism.

British police say that they’ve found human remains on the Sandringham estate, a vast area in rural Norfolk where the royal family retreats for the holiday season. No indication of the age or nature of the remains was given, and police said no further information would be released until today.

Syria’s government has withdrawn heavy weapons from inside cities and freed about 3,500 prisoners but security forces continue to kill protesters even with foreign monitors in the country, the Arab League chief said yesterday. Nabil Elaraby said pro-regime snipers also continue to operate in Syria and he demanded a complete cease-fire. But despite the regime’s ongoing crackdown, he listed the achievements of the Arab League monitors since they began work. The monitors are supposed to verify Syria’s compliance with an Arab League plan to stop the 9-month-old crackdown on dissent. President Bashar Assad agreed to the plan on Dec. 19. But since the Arab League monitors began work last Tuesday, activists say government forces have killed more than 150 people, the vast majority of them unarmed, peaceful protesters. “Yes, there is still shooting and yes there are still snipers,” Elaraby told a news conference in Cairo, where the Arab League is based. “Yes, killings continue. The objective is for us to wake up in the morning and hear that no one is killed. The mission’s philosophy is to protect civilians, so if one is killed, then our mission is incomplete.” But he also said tanks and artillery have been pulled out from cities and residential neighbourhood, food supplies had reached residents and bodies of dead protesters had been recovered.

REPUBLICANS MAKE FINAL PITCHES IN IOWA WASHINGTON (Associated Press)

Republican presidential candidates were making their final pitches yesterday, one day before Iowa voters gather in caucuses to become the first in the U.S. to chose a favourite to challenge President Barack Obama in the November election. Polls show former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney locked in a close race with Texas Rep. Ron Paul, with former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum rising swiftly to challenge them. Only three or four candidates typically make it out of Iowa with enough momentum and money to continue in the race. With roughly half of Iowa’s likely caucus attendees still undecided, an unexpected outcome remained a stark possibility for the party that has so far failed to coalesce around Romney, the well-financed and patrician easterner who is the favourite of the Republican establishment. But with Paul widely seen as a far weaker candidate nationwide, Romney was showing confidence he would move out of Iowa with momentum. Even though Romney does not have the support

of a plurality of likely Iowa caucus-goers, he is seen by them as the Republican most likely to defeat Obama in the general election. Paul and Santorum were fighting against the notion in Republican circles that their bases of support are narrow and that neither would be able to put together the diverse voting coalition necessary to beat Obama. The libertarian-leaning Paul attracts those who like his message of states’ rights and limited central government, while Santorum – an anti-abortion crusader – is popular among Christian conservatives who make up a large segment of the Republican Party base.

MIDLAND, Texas (Associated Press)

Authorities have charged a member of the U.S. military who was arrested after trying to go through a security checkpoint at a Texas airport with explosives in military-grade wrapping, the FBI said Sunday. Trey Scott Atwater, 30, was stopped at security at the Midland International Airport about 9 a.m. Saturday. FBI spokesman Mike Martinez said Atwater is being held at the Midland County jail and has been charged with trying to bring explosives onto an airplane. He will remain in custody at least until his arraignment today. Atwater and his wife and family had been visiting relatives in the area and were on their way back to his base in North Carolina, according to local media reports. It’s unclear whether Atwater was in military uniform at the time he was detained, or how many explosives were in the bag. City of Midland spokeswoman Tasa Watts said Saturday that she had no information on the suspect, but confirmed the explosives were in military-grade wrapping. She said the specific grade wouldn’t be known until the explosives were tested. The Transportation Security Administration issued a statement saying one of its officers spotted a suspicious item in a carry-on bag during X-ray screening.

MOVIE SWORD-FIGHT MASTER DIES AT 89 LONDON (Associated Press)

Bob Anderson, a former Olympic swordsman who staged fights for films including the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings series, has died, British fencing authorities said yesterday. He was 89. The British Academy of Fencing said that Anderson died early Sunday at an English hospital. Anderson donned Darth Vader’s black helmet and fought light sabre battles in two of the three original Star Wars films, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The villainous character was played by David Prowse and voiced by James Earl Jones, and Anderson’s role was not initially publicized. But Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, said in a 1983 interview that “Bob Anderson was the man who actually did Vader’s fighting.” “It was always supposed to be a secret, but I finally told (director) George (Lucas) I didn’t think it was fair anymore,” Hamill told Starlog magazine. “Bob worked so bloody hard that he deserves some recognition. “It’s ridiculous to preserve the myth that it’s all done by one man.” Robert James Gilbert Anderson was born in Hampshire, southern England, in 1922. He served in the Royal Marines during the Second World War and represented Britain in fencing at the 1952 Olympics and the 1950 and 1953 world championships.

His first film work was staging fights and coaching Errol Flynn on swashbuckler The Master of Ballantrae in 1952. He went on to become one of the industry’s most sought after sword masters, working on movies including the James Bond adventures From Russia With Love and Die Another Day; The Princess Bride; The Legend of Zorro; and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Fencing academy president Philip Bruce said yesterday that Anderson was “truly one of our greatest fencing masters and a world-class film fight director and choreographer.”

RUPERT MURDOCH OPENS HIS OWN TWITTER ACCOUNT

LONDON (Associated Press)

Rupert Murdoch has begun the new year by setting up in a new field of communications – he’s started tweeting. The media mogul, who is recovering from perhaps his most difficult year in the business, is posting on Twitter under the handle rupertmurdoch, spokeswoman Daisy Dunlop at News International confirmed yesterday. The account was opened over the New Year’s holiday, but many doubted its authenticity because Murdoch, 80, has generally tried to stay out of the spotlight as his media empire comes under increased scrutiny because of widespread phone hacking at his U.K. newspapers. Murdoch faced harsh questioning in Parliament last summer and may face additional questions from the wide-ranging Leveson Inquiry into media practices later this year, but he makes no mention of these troubles in his tweets, which include the News Corp. chief ’s New Year’s resolutions. “My resolutions, try to maintain humility and always curiosity,” he tweets. “And of course diet!” Murdoch had attracted more than 46,000 followers by Monday morning.

TILLY RETURNS TO TV SPOTLIGHT

BERLIN FILM FEST TO HONOUR MERYL STREEP

TORONTO (Canadian Press)

Some 15 years after retreating from the spotlight, Meg Tilly returns this week to lead a sprawling ensemble cast in Global’s period drama Bomb Girls, openly gushing about the ďŹ rst role to have her considering an ongoing stint on prime-time TV. The Agnes of God star, little seen since a string of TV roles in the mid-’90s, says she was lured back by the explosive premise of the miniseries, which examines the lives of Canadian women who worked in a munitions factory during the Second World War. Her character, Lorna, is the factory’s rough-edged “matron,â€? who oversees a crew of young women revelling in newfound freedom as they join the workforce for the ďŹ rst time. Lorna is a tough, demanding boss, but with two sons ďŹ ghting in the war, the stakes for her are especially high. Tilly describes Lorna as a complex character, and a refreshing change from most other female roles she’s seen. “A lot of times in TV, or sometimes in feature (ďŹ lms), you’re expected to be the good one, or you’re the sexy one or you’re the

The six-part Bomb Girls begins Wednesday on Global. Jodi Balfour stars as the spunky Gladys Witham, a rich socialite who joins the munitions factory to prove she’s worth more than just her family name; Charlotte Hegele is the sheltered preacher’s daughter Kate, who runs away from her oppressive home to carve out a new life; and Antonio Cupo is the Italian-born factory worker Marco, who is banned from the army and viewed with suspicion because of his heritage. Tilly, 51, known lately for acclaimed theatre work, says she was performing in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf ?â€? when her agent sent her the project. The California-born, B.C.-based actress says much of the Toronto-shot series is based on the real experiences of Canadian women who put their lives on the line to make explosives, a job that redeďŹ ned long-held gender roles.

THE SUPER RICH WILL MAKE AN AVERAGE WORKER’S 2012 SALARY BY NOON TODAY OTTAWA (Canadian Press)

A new report says the richest of the rich have gained more ground in Canada, and are now making 189 times the average Canadian wage. The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives pulled figures from the circulars of companies listed on the S&P/TSX composite index to find how much the 100 highest paid execs were getting. Economist Hugh Mackenzie found that the average pay package of the top 100 was $8.38 million in 2010, compared to the average worker’s yearly earnings of $44,366. He says the execs collectively got a 27 per cent raise from the $6.6 million average compensation for the top 100 CEOs in 2009. Regular Canadians, on the other hand, have seen their wages stagnate over the past few years. While Mackenzie does not expect Prime Minister Stephen Harper to hike taxes on the rich tomorrow, he does see some kind of policy response eventually because the growing inequality is “inherently unstable.”

FOUNDER GIVES LE CHATEAU $10M IN NEW FINANCING MONTREAL (Canadian Press)

Clothing retailer Le Chateau has struck a deal with founder and majority owner Herschel Segal to get long-term financing of $10 million. The Montreal company said yesterday the money – a four-year unsecured loan – will be used for capital spending and other investments. The company has an operating line of credit of about $20 million as well as an import line of credit of $25 million. Last month, Le Chateau reported a $4.1 million loss for its latest quarter as consumer caution, unseasonably warm weather and one-time costs associated with some corporate moves hit its bottom line. TODAY’S BEST ATHLETES… CANADIAN PRESS

San Jose Sharks centre Michal Handzus is congratulated by his teammates following his game-winning shootout goal against the Canucks last night at Rogers Arena.

SHARKS FINALLY BEAT THE CANUCKS

VANCOUVER (Canadian Press)

Michael Handzus scored the shootout winner last night as the San Jose Sharks beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-2. Handzus, the only shooter to score, faked twice then beat Canuck goalie Roberto Luongo on the stick side. Canucks forward Ryan Kesler hit the post earlier in the shootout, while Vancouver defenceman Dan Hamhuis saw his sharp-angled shot hit the far post in overtime. Torrey Mitchell almost won it for the Sharks in regulation when he took Jamie McGinn’s pass in the slot and beat Luongo just after the horn sounded. Jannik Hansen and Cody Hodgson scored for the Canucks while Benn Ferriero and Patrick Marleau gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead midway through the game. The Sharks (20-11-4) won for the first time against Vancouver (24-13-3) in three tries this season. The Canucks also beat the Sharks in five games in last season’s Western Conference final. Hansen got the only goal of the first period on a 3-on-1 break. He almost mishandled Hodgson’s return pass before firing a low shot under sliding defence-

man Jason Demers and past goaltender Antti Niemi from the left face-off circle. The goal was Hansen’s careerhigh 12th of the season and ended a six-game drought. The Sharks pushed back, outshooting Vancouver 17-7 in the second period, and tied the game early in the middle frame after killing a high-sticking penalty to Demers. Luongo got a pad on a Ryane Clowe shot but Ferriero backhanded the rebound over the Canuck netminder. Marleau, playing his 201st consecutive game, then made it 2-1 at even strength by taking advantage of another Canuck coverage breakdown. He scored his 14th goal and third in six games by backhanding a rebound behind Luongo after he stretched out his right pad to stop a Justin Braun shot from the side boards. Both goalies stood out. Niemi preserved the lead entering the final period by getting an arm on a Hodgson shot when the Canuck centre created a turnover at the Shark blue-line. The Shark netminder then sprawled to deny a Daniel Sedin break-in in the first minute of the third period. But he couldn’t hold off Vancouver when the NHL’s top power play went to work for the sixth time in the game. Hodgson was alone in the slot for a quick release of Hamhuis’s pass to tie the game with 8:25 remaining in the third period.

3-2 SHOOTOUT LOSS

RANGERS RALLY PAST FLYERS IN WINTER CLASSIC PHILADELPHIA (Associated Press)

Mike Rupp scored two goals and Brad Richards posted the winner on top of FLYERS a chilly baseball field, as the New York Rangers outlasted the Philadelphia FlyFALL ers, 3-2, in the Winter Classic yesterday 3-2 at Citizens Bank Park. Playing on a rink that stretched from first base to third base, the Rangers made the league’s fifth Classic event a memorable one, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to stay atop the Eastern Conference standings. The NHL surrounded the rink with Christmas trees, fire wood, fake snow, and even trash-can fires. But there was nothing artificial in the elements with snow flurries late in the second period and chilly temperatures that forced 49,967 fans to bundle up for the game. Rookie Brayden Schenn and Claude Giroux scored for the Flyers. It was Schenn’s first career goal. Flyers centre Danny Briere was stopped by Henrik Lundqvist on a penalty shot with 19 seconds left, as New York won for the third time this season against Philadelphia. Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, who signed a nine-year, US$51 million contract in June, saw a recent slump send him to the bench. Sergei Bobrovsky got the call from coach Peter Laviolette and failed to hold the early lead. The Flyers ended the game without star forward Jaromir Jagr, who played only a minute in the second period before leaving the game for good. The Flyers did not say what was wrong with the 39-year-old star, though he pointed to his back as he sat on the bench.

TEAMMATES SUBBAN, PLEKANEC FIGHT AT HABS PRACTICE BROSSARD, Que. (Canadian Press)

The new year got off to a bang for the struggling Montreal Canadiens as defenceman P.K. Subban and centre Tomas Plekanec exchanged punches during practice yesterday. The two clashed during a one-on-one drill. Both dropped their gloves and their teammates backed away to let them go at it for a few seconds before Josh Gorges and others stepped in to stop it. No big punches landed, neither player was hurt, and both stayed on the ice as practice resumed. “It’s nothing personal between me and P.K., it’s about the team and to realize we have to start playing as a team,” said Plekanec. “Those things happen. “It’s not the first time. It happened between some other guys. That’s what happens during the course of the year when things are not going well. I wouldn’t say it’s a frustration thing, it’s just that we realize we need to be better.” Fights between players at practice happen at some point of the season on most teams, usually when they are in a slump. The players saw no lingering ill effects from this skirmish. The Canadiens (14-18-7) went 1-5-0 on a road trip that ended with a 3-2 loss in Florida on Saturday. They have one win in their last eight games.

Head coach Don Hay and assistant coach Scott Walker weren’t on the ice for the host team’s practice yesterday. The two were sequestered in the team hotel with the flu. It’s a rematch of last year’s final, which Russia won 5-3 after Canada blew a three-goal lead. Huska expected Hay to be behind Canada’s bench tonight in a game that will determine which country plays for gold Thursday. “Don, he’ll be back,” Huska said. “We’re just Don Hay taking all the precautions we can right now. “We want to catch it ahead of time and make sure we keep it with him and Scott and nobody else, but we’re

fully expecting him to be back.” After going 4-0 to win Pool B, the Canadian team was rewarded with two straight days without a game and a bye to the semifinal. Sweden won Pool A with a 2-0-2 record and also had Monday off while Russia, the Czechs, Finland and Slovakia played quarter-final contests. Canadian forward Michael Bournival sat out last week’s preliminary-round game against Denmark because of the flu, although he was back in the lineup for Saturday’s 3-2 win over the U.S. in Edmonton.

NASA PROBES ARRIVE ON LUNAR SURFACE LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)

The cruise to the moon took 3 1/2 months and covered four million kilometres – far longer than the direct three-day flight by Apollo astronauts. Over the New Year’s weekend, a pair of NASA spacecraft arrived back-to-back at their destination in the first mission devoted to studying lunar gravity. Mission controllers at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory did not toast champagne – there’s a no alcohol policy on campus – but several belatedly heralded the new year with noisemakers. “We can start celebrating the new year now,” project manager David Lehman said Sunday after

attending a post-mission fete where cake and sparkling cider were served. The tricky arrivals occurred 24 hours apart. The drama unfolded on New Year’s Eve when Grail-A flew over the south pole, fired its engine and dropped into lunar orbit. Its twin Grail-B repeated the manoeuvres on New Year’s Day. Cheers and applause filled mission control when each probe signalled it was healthy and circling the moon. “Everything worked much better than I hoped,” Lehman said. Scientists expect to learn more about how the celestial body formed using Grail’s gravity measurements that will indicate what’s below the surface. Since the washing machine-size Grail probes – short for Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory – were squeezed on a small rocket to save on costs, it

lengthened the trip and took them 30 times longer to reach the moon than the Apollo astronauts. Previous spacecraft have attempted to study the moon’s gravity – about one-sixth Earth’s pull – with mixed success. Grail was expected to give scientists the most detailed maps of the moon’s uneven gravitational field and insight into its interior down to the core. Data collection won’t begin until March after the near-identical spacecraft refine their positions and are circling just 55 km above the surface. While scientists focus on gravity, middle school students will get the chance to take their own pictures of the moon using cameras aboard the probes as part of a project headed by Sally Ride, the first American woman in space.

SEOUL SAYS ‘NEW ERA’ POSSIBLE FOR NORTH, SOUTH KOREA SEOUL, South Korea (Associated Press)

South Korea’s president opened the door yesterday to possible nuclear talks with North Korea and warned the neighbouring country to avoid any provocations, saying the Korean peninsula is at a crucial turning point. Lee Myung-bak’s comments in a nationally televised speech come as the young son of the late Kim Jong Il takes power in North Korea as Supreme Commander of the military and ruling party leader after Kim’s death last month. The North vowed Sunday in a New Year’s message that it would bolster its military and defend the son, Kim Jong Un, “unto death.â€? North Korea, which has tested two atomic devices since 2006, has said it wants to return to stalled six-nation talks on halting its nuclear weapons program in return for aid. Washington and Seoul, however, have insisted that the North ďŹ rst show progress on past disarmament commitments. If North Korea halts its continuing nuclear activities, Lee said in his speech, negotiations could resume. “We are ready to resolve security concerns on the Korean peninsula and provide assistance to revive North Korea’s economy through agreements in the six-nation talks,â€? he said.

Iran’s navy said it test-ďŹ red a surface-to-surface cruise missile yesterday during a drill in international waters near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the ofďŹ cial IRNA news agency reported. The missile, called Ghader, or Capable in Farsi, was described as an upgraded version of a missile that has been in service before. IRNA said the missile “successfully hit its intended targetâ€? during the drill. An earlier version of the same cruise missile had a range of 200 kilometres and could travel at low altitudes. There were suggestions it could counter the U.S. naval presence in the Persian Gulf. Iran’s navy drill, which could bring its ships into proximity with U.S. Navy vessels that operate in the same area, is Iran’s latest show of strength in the face of mounting international criticism over its nuclear program. The 10-day exercise comes amid conicting comments from Iranian ofďŹ cials over Tehran’s intentions to close the Strait of Hormuz, and U.S. warnings against such an ominous move.

“In comparison with the previous version, the highly advanced Ghader missile system has been upgraded in terms of its radar, satellite communications, precision in target destruction, as well as range and radar-evading mechanism, said Rear Adm. Mahmoud Mousavi, a spokesman for the drill. A leading Iranian lawmaker said Sunday the manoeuvres serve

as practice for closing the Strait of Hormuz if the West blocks Iran’s oil sales. After top Iranian ofďŹ cials made the same threat a week ago, military commanders emphasized that Iran has no intention of blocking the waterway now. Mousavi on Sunday also emphasized that Iran has no plan to choke the strait. “We won’t disrupt trafďŹ c through the Strait of Hormuz. We are not after this,â€? the semiofďŹ cial ISNA news agency quoted him as saying.

There’s something about playing the Texas Stars that seems to jive with Lance Bouma’s rambunctious nature. Of the six points the Abbotsford Heat’s rough-andtumble left winger has amassed this season, four have come in the four games he’s played against the Dallas Stars’ top affiliate. Bouma stung the Stars again on Friday evening, banking a shot from behind the goal line off the back of netminder Jimmy Spratt and into the cage at 5:32 of the third period. The goal stood up as the game-winner in the Heat’s 2-1 victory at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. “Booms matches up personality-wise against them,” Heat head coach Troy Ward analyzed afterward, alluding to the fact the Stars boast a stable of physical forwards in the Bouma mould. “He seems to thrive in that environment, because of the way he plays and his reckless abandon at times. “If this was the ‘70s and I could take him to a bar and play bumper pool with him right now, I’d take him. Because we’d probably win. That was a heck of a shot (on the game-winner).” Friday’s win capped a two-game sweep of the Stars (the Heat also won 5-3 on Thursday), and allowed Abbotsford (22-9-2-0, 46 points) to move into a tie for first place overall in the AHL with the Oklahoma City Barons. The Barons, one of the Heat’s West Division rivals, have a game in hand. Texas (14-16-0-1, 29 points) remains mired in last place in the West, despite out-shooting the Heat in both games. The Stars opened the scoring Friday with a powerplay goal at 3:35 of the first, as Stephen Schultz

found the puck in a goalmouth scramble and jammed it between the pads of Heat goalie Danny Taylor. Just 28 seconds later, Krys Kolanos and Jon Rheault combined on a pretty goal to level the score. Kolanos spotted his speedy linemate streaking up the middle and hit him in stride with a pass. Rheault finished by tucking the puck inside the post on a backhand-forehand deke. The Stars had the bulk of the scoring chances in the middle frame, but the Heat came the closest to scoring. Ben Walter’s harmless-looking wrist shot on the rush found its way between Spratt’s legs, but the puck dribbled out the other side. Bouma’s game-winner represented the second time in two games the Heat managed to score on a bank shot from behind the net. On Thursday, it was Akim Aliu chipping it in off Stars keeper Tyler Beskorowany. On Friday, it was Bouma doing the deed. “It’s not something we really work on, but those are goals we’ll take,” Bouma said with a grin. “I knew the goalie couldn’t get back there quick enough, so I just tried to throw it on net as quick as possible.” Spratt, a former Calgary Flames draft choice (seventh round, 2004) who was never signed by the Heat’s NHL parent club, excelled on Friday aside from the unlucky bounce on the Bouma goal. The 26-year-old keeper, making just his second career AHL start, said that showing well against the organization that drafted him was “in the back of his mind.” “But more importantly, I just wanted to continue to make a good impression on the guys here (with the Stars),” he noted. The Heat’s penalty kill came up huge in the third period, snuffing two late Stars power plays. The man-disadvantage unit killed eight of nine Texas power plays over the two games, with Schultz’s early strike on Friday the lone blemish.
