Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom says he has the full support of Premier Christy Clark in agreeing to Metro Vancouver mayors’ plan for a two-cent gas tax increase for TransLink. The province’s support of the tax hike was called into question Monday when Clark told a radio station she’s concerned about the affordability for motorists. Province.

The province won’t rip up the deal that promises BC Ferries CEO David Hahn a $315,000-a-year pension even though Premier Christy Clark has condemned it as far too rich. Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom said yesterday he was not previously aware of the arrangement but breaking it would be very costly. “I’m not prepared to stand up and break a contract,” Lekstrom said, adding a “contract is a contract” whether it involves unionized labour or a high-profile CEO. The comment was a reference to when Lekstrom stood on principle and voted against the BC Liberal government’s 2002 decision to tear up health sector contracts to privatize hospital support staff – a move ultimately overturned by the Supreme Court of Canada, which ordered the province to pay compensation and strengthened collective bargaining rights. “I recognize the concern of the general public out there when we see these kinds of numbers,” Lekstrom said. “I did not know these were the numbers in the contract.” He said government policy now

limits future pay and pensions for BC Ferries executives to what is allowed in the public sector, but Hahn’s arrangement is grandfathered in. Clark had called Hahn’s pension as “way, way too big.” But BC Ferries board chair Donald Hayes said the legislature confirmed the pay and pension provisions in 2010 when the government

amended the Coastal Ferry Act. Hayes said in a statement the compensation package for Hahn was negotiated in 2006 at private sector rates in part to retain him in light of possible competing offers from other large private-sector firms. Hahn’s base salary of $500,000 is topped up with a bonus and other benefits, pushing his annual pay to more than $1 million for 2011.

The surge of water that flooded parts of Prince George is heading for the Lower Fraser River and Langley, the BC River Forecast Centre says. The agency issued a “high streamflow advisory” for the Lower Fraser River early this week. Warning levels at Mission were expected to reach peak levels today. The higher than usual river levels are blamed on heavier than normal rainfall through the upper portions of the Fraser River watershed and North Thompson River late last week and weekend.

LAKE DEFENDS CARBON OFFSETS SPENDING JEFF NAGEL (Black Press)

Environment minister Terry Lake says refinements to B.C.’s climate-neutral policy are possible but he gave no sign the province might ditch controversial rules that force cash-strapped school districts, health authorities and universities to pay for carbon offsets that end up in corporate hands. The province is under growing pressure from critics to abandon the practice of forcing public sector agencies to buy their way to a zero carbon footprint, which extends to municipalities in 2012. Lake said the offsets have achieved real cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. “We want to be a carbon-neutral government,” he said in an interview. “It has to be meaningful. It has to be real.” But he said he’s prepared to consider revisions, including a program so offsets school districts need to buy can

go back into conserving energy at schools, rather than leaving the education system. “There’s always room for improvement,” he said. The Lower Mainland’s two health authorities together spent more than $2 million on carbon offsets in 2010, while universities and colleges in the region put in another $2.5 million. Surrey paid the most of all school districts, sinking nearly $500,000 into claiming carbon neutrality as it simultaneously struggled to cut costs to balance its budget. School boards in Vancouver, Coquitlam, Richmond, Burnaby, Langley, North Vancouver and Delta all had to put up at least $100,000. The money goes to the Pacific Carbon Trust (PCT), a Crown corporation that then gives the cash to private firms that can cut their emissions, usually through trust-subsdized improvements to their operations.

People from all over the West Kootenay are bringing their treasures and collections to the Great Canadian Roadshow this week hoping to turn a hefty profit. Similar to the PBS program Antiques Roadshow, items are assessed for value and history, then either bought by the company or turned away. “We have 70,000 collectors around the world,” show manager AJ King said. “If we have a collector for something we can purchase it, if we don’t have a collector we can’t purchase it.”

He turns up in next week’s instalment as a clueless cop who fails to recognize then-prime minister Wilfrid Laurier when the political leader walks into the police station. The scene involves a couple of dry lines from Harper, who is drawn into a debate over whether the Ottawa hockey club can win the Stanley

A 27-day prison uprising ended without bloodshed yesterday as hundreds of inmates emerged from the embattled Rodeo II prison after negotiations with authorities, Venezuelan authorities said. Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said on state television that the National Guard had taken control of the prison from inmates. He added that the standoff had been resolved after long negotiations with the rebelling inmates and that authorities had guaranteed prisoners that they would not be harmed.

A group of artists gathered in front of the Austrian embassy in Sarajevo yesterday to demand the country release a retired Bosnian Army general detained on the request of Serbia. Former Serbian colonel Jovan Divjak defected to Bosnia’s army at the start of the 1992-95 war between the two sides and is considered a hero in Sarajevo and a war crimes suspect in neighbouring Serbia. A court in Vienna ordered him to remain in Austria during extradition proceedings but he has not received a hearing date since his March arrest.

A Bahraini woman, jailed for reciting poems critical of the Gulf kingdom’s rulers during a wave of protests earlier this year, was released from prison yesterday, her brother said. Ayat al-Qurmezi, 20, became a minor celebrity among protesters after reciting poems critical of Bahrain’s king and prime minister in the capital’s Pearl Square, which was the hub for Shiite-led demonstrations that broke out in February. Al-Qurmezi was detained in March during a raid on her family house.

In practice, possession of small amounts is allowed, and the drug is sold openly in designated shops.

NEW CATHOLIC CHILD ABUSE FINDINGS DUBLIN, Ireland (Associated Press)

A new investigation into the Catholic Church’s chronic coverup of child abuse found yesterday that a rural diocese and its bishop ignored Irish church rules requiring all suspected molestation cases to be reported to police – and the Vatican encouraged this concealment. The government, which ordered the twoyear probe into 1996-2009 coverups in the County Cork diocese of Cloyne, warned its findings suggest that parishes across Ireland could pose a continuing danger to children’s welfare today. The 341-page Cloyne report is the fourth such government-ordered probe into how church leaders for decades Sean Brady protected their own reputation – and their own pedophile staff members from the law – at the expense of Irish children. The primate for Ireland’s 4 million Catholics, Cardinal Sean Brady, and the official who replaced Magee in Cloyne, Archbishop Dermot Clifford, issued immediate apologies and pledged greater openness and co-operation with state authorities. Brady himself last year admitted he helped to conceal the crimes of one serialrapist priest from Irish authorities in the mid-1970s but rejected calls to resign.

OBAMA REPORTS MORE THAN $86M IN FUNDRAISING WASHINGTON (Associated Press)

President Barack Obama collected $86 million (all figures US) combined for his re-election campaign and the Democratic party during the past three months, giving him an advantage over the Republican field seeking to challenge him in 2012. Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said yesterday that it raised more than $47 million and the Democratic National Committee brought in more than $38 million through the end of June. Obama’s team had set a goal of $60 million combined. The fundraising totals outpace Republicans, who have raised about $35 million so far. At the same time in 2007, 10 Republican presidential hopefuls had raised more than $118 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Fundraising totals are often seen as a gauge of excitement about a candidate, and the money will help build a foundation for all-important advertising and get-out-thevote efforts in next year’s election. Obama’s advisers are anticipating a stiff challenge from Republicans amid rocky economic conditions. Obama has acknowledged he will need to re-energize supporters who were inspired by his message of hope and change but may be discouraged by the economy and the pace of change.

7 AHEAD OF COMIC CON, DC PREPS READERS FOR RELAUNCH

“By no means do we think, ‘Oh, it’s cool to be a teen mom.’ I definitely don’t think that it’s cool,” she says. But celebrity hasn’t been as easy for all the teens, particularly 21-year-old Portwood, who was given probation in June after pleading guilty to two domestic battery charges against the father of her child. The incidents aired on the show. The following week, he called 911, fearing Portwood was about to hurt herself. She was hospitalized and is now undergoing treatment at a rehab facility. Her child, Leah, is living with her father.

People tend to stare at 19-year-old Maci Bookout. “If I go grocery shopping or something it’s not that bad but on the weekends that Bentley’s dad has him and me and my friends go out ... to a club or something I can tell that people are like watching to see how I’m going to act or what I’m going to do,” says Bookout, mother of a two-year-old named Bentley and one of the stars of MTV’s Teen Mom, a reality show about kids with kids. Bookout and her co-stars, Farrah Abraham, Amber Portwood and Catelynn Lowell, first made their TV debut on 16 ‘DON’T THINK and Pregnant. The series was so sucIT’S COOL’ cessful that the network tapped them to star in the Teen Mom spin-off. Viewers watched Lowell and her boyfriend Tyler grieve over the daughter they gave up for adoption, Abraham’s ups and downs with her mother and Bookout navigate co-parenting with her ex-fiance Ryan. Motherhood has made the teens instant celebrities, with tabloids and bloggers hot on their trail at every change or rumour in their lives. “Like moving or marriage or are we pregnant again,” says Abraham, 20, who has a two-year-old daughter named Sophia. “You know those things, I guess, are attention-grabbers so it’s understandable ASSOCIATED PRESS why that would happen.” Maci Bookout, left, Farrah Abraham and Catelynn But Abraham doesn’t think that having a baby Lowell, stars of MTV’s Teen Mom, don’t feel they’re role models for other teenagers. should make her a celebrity or a role model.

DC Comics says it is prepping its readers and fans for its upcoming relaunch in late summer, offering up a free guide to its multiple relaunches of comic characters and series. The guide, DC Comics – The New 52, will be given away free starting July 20 at comic book shops and at the annual Comic-Con International in San Diego, which starts next week, the publisher said yesterday. Besides a six-page preview of the upcoming Justice League No. 1 written by DC’s chief creative officer Geoff Johns and illustrated by Jim Lee, the guide will have covers for all 52 new series, sketches and details from writers and artists. The series, which include new takes on characters ranging from established heroes such as Superman and Wonder Woman will also see new costumes and background for other characters, too, such as Sgt. Rock and bounty hunter Jonah Hex, among others. At the same time, the company also said it would start selling digital copies of its printed ongoing superhero titles through apps and a website the same day they’re released in comic shops, a move dubbed by the industry as day-and-date sales.

STARS MULL OPTIONS IF HARRY POTTER HAD NEVER HAPPENED

DOCUMENTARY TRACKS STRIFE IN TRIBE CALLED QUEST

LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)

In some fantasy world, Daniel Radcliffe might be a low-level gofer on movie sets. Emma Watson might be auditioning for plays. Tom Felton might be noodling around as a musician. And Rupert Grint might be selling ice cream. With Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 arriving tomorrow, the young stars pondered what they might be doing if the acting thing hadn’t worked out. An 11-year-old when picked for the title role of the Harry Potter franchise, Radcliffe ďŹ gures that since his parents worked in the arts – his mother as a casting director, his father as a literary agent – he would have ended up in show business. But not as an actor, probably as an assistant director. “I’m sure they probably would have tried to get me, like, an internship on a ďŹ lm as a runner. And then I’d just try to work my way up the A.D. ladder from there,â€? said Radcliffe, whose pre-Harry Potter work included a production of David CopperďŹ eld.

LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)

Michael Rapaport has reunited A Tribe Called Quest – on movie screens, at least. The pioneering New York hip-hop group, best known for classics like Check the Rhime and Bonita Applebum, split in 1998. While they’ve reunited for performances since then, a clash between Q-Tip and Phife has kept them out of the recording studio ever since. Rapaport says he started work on his recently released documentary in 2008, hoping to determine why they broke up and answer the question, “Will they continue to make music going forward ever?â€? “We don’t just want to go in there for the money and it sounds like crap. The consensus would be, ‘I’ve waited so-and-so years for this and y’all come out with this?’ So we’d rather not do it than for that to happen,â€? Phife said while helping to promote Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest. Though made with the group’s cooperation, Q-Tip has criticized the movie for focusing too much on inďŹ ghting. He didn’t show for its screening at the recent LA Film Festival and voiced his anger at Rapaport via Twitter.

Just 10 when she was cast as Hermione Granger, Watson had no previous professional acting experience. Yet she’s convinced that no matter how she would have gone on to make a living, acting still

Emma Watson and her Harry Potter co-stars say they would be doing something artistic if they hadn’t done the movies.

would have been part of her life. “I would have found some way to end up acting, performing. I mean, obviously, not on this scale, but I would have been doing it, I’m sure,â€? Watson said. “I’m almost a hundred per cent sure I would be doing plays, I would be acting.â€? Also a screen newcomer when chosen at 11 to play Ron Weasley, Grint ďŹ nds it daunting to imagine a life in which he never landed among the Harry Potter clan. “It’s weird to think what I’d be doing now ... I’d have probably gone down the art route. I wanted to design hats for a while when I was really young. And being an ice cream man was another dream.â€? Like Radcliffe and Watson, the guy who co-starred as Draco Malfoy expects he would have wound up doing something creative. “My brother and I often talk about it. Where would I be and what would I be doing? I like to think something creative. I’ve always been fairly minded that way, certainly with music and fooling around as a kid with a video camera,â€? said Felton, who was 12 when cast in Harry Potter.

The CRTC said yesterday that FM radio stations in Canada reported higher revenues and profits for the broadcast year ended Aug. 31, 2010, while there was little change in the results for AM stations. The federal broadcast regulator said there were 513 FM stations in Canada, up 17 from the previous year, that brought in a total of $1.24 billion in revenue, up from $1.2 billion in 2009. The number of AM stations fell by nine to 141 for the year, while total revenue were relatively unchanged at $307.3 million, up 0.4 per cent from the previous year. The Canadian Radiotelevision and Telecommunications Commission said the FM and AM stations combined earned profits before interest and taxes totalling $298.4 million for the broadcast year, up from $271.6 million.

RIM SHARES DROP AFTER SHAREHOLDER MEETING TORONTO (Canadian Press)

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion will have to deliver strong new products and financial results to counter doubts about its future prospects, analysts said yesterday a day after the company held a key meeting with shareholders. Shares in RIM dipped in morning trading a day after co-chief executives Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis admitted at the company’s annual meeting that it could be doing better in some areas, but remained staunchly upbeat that an upcoming new generation of high-end BlackBerrys will drive stronger results. RIM shares were down 31 cents or just more than one per cent at $27.12 on Toronto Stock Exchange, far below their 52-week peak of $69.30 but above the low of $25.28.

Football | Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison calls NFL commissioner Roger Goodell a “crook’’ and a “devil,’’ in the August issue of Men’s Journal.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (Associated Press)

Something about playing against Major League Soccer brings out the best in Manchester United’s Federico Macheda. The 19-year-old forward scored twice as the Premier League champions opened their pre-season with a 4-1 victory over the New England Revolution yesterday night. Although sporadically used back at Old Trafford, Macheda is familiar to MLS fans after scoring twice for United in the league’s all-star game last summer. “You saw Macheda finishing today – first class,’’ United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said. “He is something special. Nineteen years-old – I still have high hopes for him.’’ Michael Carrick had a pair of assists and Michael Owen and Park Ji-Sung also scored for Man. U., which gained control of the match after a scoreless first by scoring three goals in 10 minutes in the second. Kenny Mansally scored for New England to make it 2-1

in the 56th minute, but Macheda made it 3-1 on a behindthe-back pass from Carrick that sent him in all alone on Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. “After we scored, we found it got a bit easier,’’ Macheda said. The MVP of last summer’s MLS all-star game, Macheda made just one Premier League start in 12 competitive appearances during the first half of the season, then was loaned in January to Sampdoria. He scored just two competitive goals last season, one in the Premier League in November and the other in the Italian Cup in January. But returning to the United States was just what he needed. “Seems to be,’’ he said. “I hope to keep it like that.’’ Coming off its record 19th English league championship, Man. U. opens its title defence Aug. 14 at West Bromwich Albion.

STARS SHINE AT THE ESPY AWARDS LOS ANGELES (Associated Press)

Dirk Nowitzki and his teammates were feeling so good, they broke out in another rendition of “We are the Champions.’ It was definitely a fun night to be a member of the Dallas Mavericks. Nowitzki picked up a pair of trophies, including male athlete of the year, and the Mavericks were chosen as the best team yesterday night at the ESPY Awards. Nowitzki also won best NBA player during ESPN’s live telecast from the Nokia Theatre. Rick Carlisle was named best coach for leading the Mavericks to the NBA championship. Nowitzki, who was the MVP of the NBA finals, is the first NBA player to be named top male athlete since Michael Jordan in 1993. “This is humbling,’’ said Nowitzki, who was talked into singing Queen’s famous tune backstage. “I’m very honoured to be up here tonight.’ Olympic gold medallist Lindsey Vonn won female athlete of the year for the second year in a row. Saturday Night Live comedian Seth Myers hosted the show for a second straight year. He opened the telecast by joking about the NFL and NBA lockouts before taking some digs at the Miami Heat. He then cracked some jokes about Brian Wilson’s unique outfit choice. Myers also had a few barbs about the Vancouver riots after the Stanley Cup final, including a parody sketch of the famous kissing couple. The always eccentric Wilson would have won the award for best dressed athlete, had there been one. All eyes were on the San Francisco Giants closer as he walked down the red carpet in a full-body spandex tuxedo, complete with black high-tops and a cane. Fresh off leading the Bruins to their first Stanley Cup crown in 39 years, Boston goaltender Tim Thomas won for best championship performance and best NHL player, beating out Anaheim’s Corey Perry, Vancouver’s Daniel Sedin and Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis. Philadelphia’s Roy Halladay took home two awards of his own. The Phillies ace won as the best MLB player, beating out Toronto’s Jose Bautista and Toronto-born Cincinnati star Joey Votto, and for best moment for his playoff no-hitter against the Reds. Bautista also came up short in the breaktrough athlete category, losing to Los Angeles Clippers star Blake Griffin. Griffin, who burst onto the scene in winning NBA Rookie of the Year, was chosen as breakthrough athlete. Montreal mixed martial arts superstar Georges St-Pierre was nominated for best fighter, but lost to boxer Manny Pacquiao. Surfer Stephanie Gilmore won the best female action sport athlete. Freestyle skier Sarah Burke of Squamish, B.C., was nominated. The best play of the year happened just days ago and went to U.S. women’s national team member Abby Wambach, who headed home the game-tying goal in Sunday’s dramatic win over Brazil at the World Cup. Jay Leno presented the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance to Anthony Robles, who also won for best male athlete with a disability. Dewey Bozella received the Arthur Ashe Courage award for his strength and conviction. Canadian actor Kiefer Sutherland handed out the award to the boxer, who was imprisoned 26 years for a crime he didn’t commit. The year’s best game went to the Eagles and Giants, in a contest that saw Philadelphia score 28 points in the final 7:18 to rally for a 38-31 win. Super Bowl MVP Rodgers was honoured as best NFL player and Serena Williams won for best female tennis player.

tearful President Karzai appeared at the fringe of the throng of thousands and pushed toward the lowered coffin. He paused at the edge of the open pit, then climbed down in it, partially disappearing from view, and wailed. He remained there for at least a minute, his grief overwhelming other cries and prayers. Relatives and guards were unable to coax him out, but two men locked their arms underneath Karzai’s and pulled their leader out by force.

CROWN PRINCE’S PLANE IMPOUNDED IN GERMANY BERLIN (Associated Press)

A plane being used by Thailand’s Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn has been impounded in Germany as part of a long-running battle with the Thai government over payments for a building project in Thailand, officials said yesterday. The Boeing 737 “Royal Flight’’ was seized on a court order, and is now being kept at Munich airport, said Robert Wilhelm, a spokesman for the airport. Vajiralongkorn, the heir to the Thai throne, is an experienced pilot and a frequent visitor to Germany, putting him in the middle of a long-running business dispute between the two countries. A spokesman for the bankruptcy administrator of German construction firm Walter Bau AG said the plane was seized Tuesday because of the Thai government’s refusal to pay 30 million euros ($42 million US) it owes the company. The Thai government owes the now-bankrupt builder the money under a contract agreed to more than 20 years ago to build and operate a toll highway to Bangkok’s Don Muang airport, Alexander Goerbing said. The Crown Prince’s plane stood idle on the airport grounds yesterday, with photos showing the court order “against the Kingdom of Thailand represented by the Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’’ affixed to the plane’s door, forbidding “any change, use or reduction of the (plane’s) value.’’
