An Abbotsford couple is part of a nationwide lobby to have the British government end a decades-old pension freeze. Eric and Peggy Muir left England in 1957 for the promise of better opportunities in Canada. Their pensions are frozen at the rate they were at retirement 23 years ago, in accordance with a policy that only affects the Commonwealth nations. There are 158,000 pensioners from the U.K. living in Canada who have their British pensions frozen without any cost of living increases. Meanwhile, pensioners living in the United States, Israel, Philippines, any European Union country, as well as many others, receive annual cost-of-living increases the same as if they lived in the U.K. “So it’s fixed, we’ve never, ever had an increase,” said Peggy. Peggy was a Morse code operator, who fulfilled her communications role during the Normandy invasion, and assisted wounded who were flown back to England. Some of the Canadian veterans are ready to give their war medals back to the British government in protest, but that won’t be Eric. “I spent a lot of time overseas earning those,” he said. Now 88, he has been drawing his pension since he was 65, with no increase in 23 years. If he lived a few miles south, in Sumas rather than Abbotsford, he would have been getting the increases. “I’ve provided for myself. We’re comfortable,” he

Abbotsford MLA Mike de Jong brought his Open Mike leadership campaign here on Monday morning.
British Columbia needs a new salesman and Mike de Jong is applying for the job. The Abbotsford West MLA and Liberal leadership candidate spoke Monday morning to a crowd of 300 supporters at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre. The breakfast meeting was part of his Open Mike tour throughout the province. “This is a job application process decided by the people ... the premier needs to be the province’s top salesman,” de Jong told the crowd. Pointing to B.C.’s rich natural resources – minerals like coal, copper and zinc, wood products and electricity – de Jong said these assets need to be better utilized.

He called it unacceptable for B.C., which produces electricity, to continue importing it from other areas. He suggested producing “clean, green electricity” and selling it to other areas of North America. “Let’s do it and have a premier willing to be the salesman. “I’m a little bit tired of people who are opposed to everything ... let’s be the party with the leader who tells you what we are for.” De Jong believes the premier’s office needs to be reduced in order to show “we can do more with less.” He envisions a cabinet of under 20 people. “That’s not a great way to make friends with colleagues,” he said. Plea could avoid trial More charges came after guilty plea in 2005
A 19-year-old woman died at the scene of a single vehicle accident in Abbotsford on Sunday afternoon. At approximately 4:30 p.m., a 1992 Nissan NX traveling westbound, in the 33500 block of Page Road, left the roadway. The resulting crash trapped the two female occupants. Abbotsford Police, Abbotsford Fire Rescue and BC Ambulance attended the scene, finding the passenger dead. The 18-yearold driver was air-lifted to hospital with very serious injuries. Abbotsford Police collision reconstructionists and patrol division officers are investigating the incident. No names have been released.

Ed Ilnicki pleaded guilty in 2005 to two of 11 hazardous waste charges, resulting in a $10,000 fine. He is expected to plead guilty again, to three of 43 charges laid in 2008.
Knife incident ends peacefully
A 34-year-old man has been sent to hospital for mental evaluation after a two-hour stand-off Friday afternoon. Abbotsford Police were called out to Sandpiper Drive after receiving reports of a shirtless man chasing people with a knife. When officers arrived, they were told the suspect had run into a house. “The resident family was very cooperative ... they told us he’s in the attic,” said Const. Ian MacDonald, who would not confirm if the house was the suspect’s home.

Ed Ilnicki, whose company Canadian Petroleum Products (CPC) created an environmental state of emergency in Abbotsford in 2005, is expected to plead guilty to three of 43 hazardous waste charges relating to a second company, Valley Demolition and Design and Repair. The infractions occurred between 2005 and 2007 on Wheel and Foy Avenues in Abbotsford, as well as Gloucester Way in Langley. The matter was set for a seven-day trial in Abbotsford Provincial Court beginning yesterday (Monday), but Crown Counsel anticipates Ilnicki will plead guilty to three counts. He’ll be back in court on Friday. Ilnicki was charged with 11 counts for environmental offences in 2003, and in 2005 pleaded guilty to two of those, resulting in a $10,000 fine. The other nine charges were stayed. The provincial government paid $870,000 in 2005 to clean up the environmental mess left behind by CPC on Industrial Avenue. Investigators found 1,690 barrels, many unmarked, containing toxic and dangerous substances. Then-environment minister Barry Penner invoked the state of emergency in order to access public funds to clean up the site. That ended a legal battle his ministry was having with the property owner, Sev Samulski, over who was finan-

The police cleared the residence and began to negotiate with the man. After police opened the hatch to the attic, the man began to respond to officers and eventually gave himself up. He was placed in custody without incident. Police recovered “what appeared to be a steak knife” from the man who had several “apparently self-inflicted” cuts on his arms. MacDonald said the suspect has had dealing with police in the past. His name has not been released.

Three construction contracts, worth a total of $3,572,761, were handed out by council last week. McDonald and Ross Construction Ltd. of Abbotsford was awarded $2,039,318 to extend Marshall Road between Queen Street and Mt. Lehman Road. This is the final stage of the Marshall Road extension plan. As well as road work, the contact includes rain gardens, sidewalks and street lights. Southwest Contracting Ltd. in Surrey will receive $1,038,640 to widen Old Yale Road from North Parallel Road to Zanatta Place. An existing contract with Tyam Construction – for work on the Whatcom Road connector – has been increased by $494,803. Bad weather and other unforeseen issues, including slope repairs, have caused delays and extra work to be performed. The connector is scheduled to open in late February.

environment investigators found waste oil, waste printing inks and xylene, which is highly flammable. In 2008, Ilnicki originally faced 52 environmental charges related to that operation. It is not yet known which three counts the anticipated guilty plea will involve. The maximum penalty for contravening hazardous waste regulations is a fine of $1 million and six months in jail.

cially responsible. It was the landlord who brought the offences to light. During the cleanup, businesses on Industrial Avenue within 200 metres of CPC were at one point told to evacuate their buildings because of the threat of explosion. There were almost 10,000 litres of methyl-ethyl-ketone (MEK), a substance used in paint that is flammable with highly explosive fumes. They
were in mislabelled waste containers. The carcinogen Chromium 6, and hydroflouric acid, which is also explosive, were among other hazardous materials at the site. Up to 10 million litres of toxic waste could not be unaccounted for. The City of Abbotsford pulled CPC’s business licence in June 2004. On Wheel Avenue, where Ilnicki set up a new base of operations, ministry of
Randy Hawes (Abbotsford-Mission) and John van Dongen (Abbotsford South), have thrown their support behind rival candidate George Abbot. “I think the fact that I have close to 10,000 other people who choose to support me, compensates for that, said de Jong. He said having a premier from Abbotsford would be good for the city, but added there will be no animosity after the leadership race. “On Feb. 27, we all need to sit around the campfire as a group and sing Kumbaya. Part of de Jong’s plan is to have a government that is more open to the people. He wants to rebuild public trust and one way is to post all MLA expenses online. “It’s your money. You deserve to know.
He also said his stand on the HST has not changed. He believes people have the right to vote on the issue and he wants to move that vote up to June, if possible. “I will be voting in favour of it. It’s sound public policy. He told the business-oriented crowd that making money was nothing to be ashamed of. “In order to be successful, we have to keep thinking ahead. He used the B.C. wood industry’s successful partnership with China as an example. De Jong believes in the next five years, Russia will be courting the Chinese to purchase their wood, endangering B.C.’s relationship. He suggested the door was open to begin trading with India. “Who’s got the vision? he asked the crowd. The B.C. Liberal party leadership vote is set for Feb. 26.

Peggy said the lobby to end the freeze has been going on for a long time. “I don’t think we’re going to have any luck,” she predicted. “They’re just going to wait for us all to die.” The U.K. government’s reason for the freeze was the lack of reciprocal agreements. However, today most industrialized countries index pensions to inflation, even for residents who leave the nation. The British government’s argument now is that it cannot afford to make the change. In 1999, minister responsible Jeff Rooker described the fact some pensioners saw pensions rising and others frozen as “illogical,” and told parliament he was not prepared to defend the present situation.

said. “But that doesn’t alter the fact that it’s not right.” He knows of English grandparents who came to Canada to live with their children’s families, but had to return to the U.K. over the pension finances issue. The increases to pensions in the U.K. have been quite generous, said Eric. The U.K. is the only country in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development which denies parity to all state pensioners regardless of where they live. The Canada Pension Plan, for example, gives annual increases to pensioners no matter where they choose to live.

Call for accountability If nothing else, former solicitor general and MLA Kash Heed deserves credit for drawing attention to the current negotiations between the provincial government and the RCMP for a new 20-year contract. Heed’s allegations that a police probe into his own conduct as MLA is an attempt at character assassination come at a crucial time in the RCMP’s history. Heed has been calling for more accountability for the RCMP and for that he may have made a few enemies on the force. But it’s unlikely that the releasing of information in a warrant and charges related to alleged misuse of MLA funds to pay salaries of political operatives was merely an attempt to make Heed look bad and win public favour. Heed has experience to back up his assertions that the RCMP needs to do a better job policing itself. But his voice is just one among many calling for greater accountability after the handling of the missing women’s case, which a recent report suggested was mishandled by
Mounties (and Vancouver Police); the death of Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski; and recent stories of rogue police officers misusing their power. The plain truth of the matter is the RCMP needs to win back the public trust before arguing it does a better job than would a B.C. regional police force. But it has many hurdles to clear. For one, the national police force appears to be at arm’s length from the communities it serves. Unlike municipal police forces, such as Abbotsford’s, there is no local board in place to set priorities. Still, the RCMP has deep experience and resources to offer, and the success of the regional Integrated Gang Task Force and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team have proven the Mounties can work effectively with other police agencies. As for Heed, he should continue to ask for more police accountability but remain silent when it comes to his own affairs. – Black Press
Give us reasons, not laws, to cut energy use Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand Sometimes it doesn’t take much to send people over the edge. While things here are not quite as crazy as they are in Egypt, the furor over compact fluorescent light bulbs, and the banning of incandescents, is getting close. As I’ve related in previous columns, I switched many lights to CFLs a few years ago, and certainly noticed a reduction in my electricity bill. I’ve never found them to be slow lighting up, their brightness (at least in my workshop) is within reasonable parameters and they seem to last. I am aware however, that they don’t like the cold … the fluorescent tubes that light my barn on warm days don’t when it’s really cold. And since 90 per cent of our province and virtually all the rest of Canada is, from October to about March, often akin to a deep freeze, people living north and east of Hope will be in the
dark, at least as far as their porch light is concerned. Do I think CFLs have a place in our homes? My hydro bill proved they work. Do they last as long as claimed? Most seem to. Do they provide as much light as an incandescent? I think so. Should they be legislated into law, and incandescent light bulbs banned? Absolutely not. This is not a nanny state, and we as citizens of what I consider the greatest country on Earth should make it clear that we don’t need to be told, and required, what to do. Governments should make a case for the use of more energy-efficient lighting systems, but they should not make it a requirement. Nor for that matter should they be banning many other activities or things – books, lifestyle, thoughts, religions, guns or anything else we choose to do or use that does not harm or affect others. We have a charter of rights and freedoms, and any time ‘government’ chooses to ban something, it is infringing on those rights. While I may be in the minority, I also think it wrong that we are slapped with a carbon tax. Yes, I drive an emissions-
spewing vehicle, but I also recycle and live a relatively pollution-free lifestyle. My consumption of products other than fuel creates little in the way of carbon emissions. Granted, some of those products do come from China, which has a less than sterling reputation, but
Any time government chooses to ban something, it is infringing on our rights. do you really think their factories, and those in any nation other than Canada for that matter, will truly buy into a cap and trade program that is primarily promulgated by stock brokers believing they can make a fortune selling irrelevancies? Let’s be honest, why would anyone pay money to someone else to salve their corporate conscience while they continue to pollute – unless it increases
their bottom line? Yes, we have to do something to reduce pollution but does planting a few trees really justify someone else, who supposedly pays for those trees, to continue to poison the air? Fuel, whether it comes from the tar sands, oil and gas wells, coal deposits or nuclear sources, will always be required to supply the endless demand for more and better. So there truly is a need to develop an environmentally friendly source. Regardless, life is not infinite, and I have to believe that neither is the capacity of the Earth to sustain us. One day it will all end, just as a light bulb – CFL or incandescent – will eventually and inevitably burn out. In the meantime, governments should refrain from trying to mandate ‘what’s best’ for us, and instead concentrate on minimizing their role in our lives. As for the CFLs in my house, they’ve mostly been replaced with halogens because no matter how great their energy-efficiency, they are, if one breaks, toxic.

letters Innocent citizens aren’t criminals Re: Mission home inspections for grow-ops Can this be happening in Canada? Home invasions by our government, and charging for the cost? Is this what we have been reduced to? Get the bad guy at any cost. Do we still sing O Canada in schools anymore? Is there no more pride or honour in being Canadian? If no one remembers the great wars when countries with dictators were freed. Canadian lives were lost to give others the freedoms that as Canadians we took for granted. Then think of China, where speaking out against the government can land you in jail and even tortured. Is this where we are going? There is no doubt that drugs are a problem. Let’s do what we can to get rid of all the crime involved in the drug trade, but do not make criminals out of innocent citizens. Having met the mayor of Mission years ago, he appeared to be the kind of person you would be proud to have as a friend. Bright, articulate, passionate about Mission, a super guy. I was shocked and disappointed that he would not have corrected this problem as soon as he was made aware of it. Perhaps with all he is involved with that he has lost sight of who he is responsible to, and why we have all supported him. Let’s get back on track and hold our heads high again for the greatest country in the world. Let’s do more than party, have parades, and fireworks; let’s be leaders again, so others will see us as a country to emulate. Tom Lester

Labyrinths are ancient, powerful, transformative tools found in many cultures all over the world dating back 4000 years. Hospitals, universities, churches, retreat centres, and others have them on their premises. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth doesn’t confuse, but calms people who walk through it. Diana Ng, is a consultant and an awards finalist who designs and builds Labyrinths from conception to completion. She has recently created a labyrinth at Fleetwood Park in Surrey. She integrates labyrinths into her uniquely customized and innovative workshops and presentations. These learning sessions assist people and organizations to be peaceful, creative and effective.

Penny-a-Line Players is holding a casting call next weekend for its new play Ad-Hoc. The original production by Morley Schulman is a Neil Simon type of comedy that centres around Malcolm, a playwright who works in a deadend advertising job. Oblivious to his surroundings, his egocentric dream suddenly crashes as he finishes the script and loses his job at the same time. After quickly gaining employment at another ad agency, he starts to realize that his new co-workers are, in fact, his characters come to life. “It’s really about dealing with your alter ego and reality,” said co-director Gwynne Hunt, who founded Penny-a-Line Players 12 years ago. “There’s going to be good, meaty roles for any actor.” The large cast needed includes seven men and five women between the ages of 20 to 60. Some actors will end up playing two roles – a character and their alter ego. Auditions run 3-5 p.m. on Feb. 5 at Trinity Memorial United Church, 33737 Hazel St. Rehearsals will take place in Abbotsford from March to June. The 90-minute play debuts on June 25 as part of the fifth annual Festival of Artistic and Creative Expression sponsored by Art Matter’s Society. Contact Hunt for an audition time at 604859-2407 or ragmag@ telus.net.

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Tuesday, February 1, 2011
Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
After the final buzzer sounded at the Envision Athletic Centre on Saturday evening, University of the Fraser Valley guard Joel Friesen aptly summed up his team’s weekend by booting a chair in frustration. Indeed, gut-wrenching losses were the theme for the Cascade hoopsters – the UFV men’s and women’s squads were each dealt a pair of demoralizing defeats by the visiting Regina Cougars. The Cascade men, balanced precariously on the Canada West playoff bubble, suffered a heartbreaking 92-89 double-overtime loss to the Cougars on Friday. Regina completed the sweep with a gritty 87-83 win on Saturday. The losses left the Cascades at 6-12 on the season, tied with the Calgary Dinos for the conference’s eighth and final playoff spot. Regina, at 12-6, is in fifth place. “It’s frustrating,” Friesen said, “because it’s not the first semester anymore. We can’t be making the same mistakes we’ve been making the whole year. “It’s not just the weekend – we’ve been in the majority of our games this season, but we haven’t been able to finish.” Sam Freeman was on fire for the Cascades on
Friday, scoring a gamehigh 29 points, including a sensational off-balance three-pointer at the buzzer to force a second overtime session. But the Cougars pulled away in the second OT. Saturday’s game didn’t require extra time, but it was no less discouraging for the Cascades. After trailing by as many as nine points in the third quarter, UFV battled back to knot the score 73-73 with five minutes left in the fourth. Regina held a slender 84-83 lead in the final minute, but Cougars fifth-year forward Marek Donarowicz converted an old-fashioned three-point play – a tough driving layup plus a free throw – with 17.5 seconds remaining to give his team a fourpoint lead. As has been the story for the Cascades this season, scoring wasn’t the major issue. UFV head coach Barnaby Craddock didn’t feel his team played particularly well offensively either night vs. Regina, but they still exceeded the 80-point plateau. The more pressing concern came at the other end of the floor, as the Cascades struggled to slow the Cougars’ balanced attack. “We have some real need for improvement on the defensive end, and it’s something we’re trying to address,” Craddock noted. “When we beat Alberta, we held them to 69 points. When we beat Calgary, we held

them to 69. We’ve got to play better defence as a unit, and we’ve got a few more games to get better at that.” The Cascades women find themselves in a slightly more comfortable playoff position than the men – at 8-10, they’re tied for seventh in Canada West. But a
pair of weekend losses to Regina – 83-79 on Friday and 74-66 on Saturday – left them with a bitter taste in their mouths. The Cougars, a perennial powerhouse currently ranked No. 5 nationally, were certainly favoured. But the youthful Cascades built double-digit leads both

nights, including a 12point edge at halftime on Friday, only to watch the veteran Regina squad (15-3) calmly rally to win by scores of 83-79 and 74-66. “Honestly, it’s disappointing,” UFV coach Al Tuchscherer said. “Maybe we think too
It was a closer call than they might have liked, but the Abbotsford Heat hit the AHL all-star break on a winning note after edging the Texas Stars 5-4 in a shootout on Saturday evening. The Heat saw a 4-2 lead evaporate with less than five minutes remaining in the third period, as the host Stars got late goals from Dan Spang and Francis Wathier to knot the score. Abbotsford salvaged the victory in the shootout, as Jon Rheault and Matt Keith scored, and Leland Irving turned aside all four Texas shooters he was required to face. The Heat (22-20-2-5) were efficient on the power play on Saturday – they went 2-for-3 with the man advantage, courtesy of goals from T.J. Brodie and Lance Bouma. Matt Pelech and Gaelan Patterson added evenstrength markers for Abbotsford. Irving, back in the Heat crease after head coach Jim Playfair opted to give backup J.P. Lamoureux two consecutive starts, turned aside 35 of 39 Texas shots. This was the Heat’s second straight shootout game as the club dropped a 4-3 decision to the Houston Aeros on Friday. The Heat also lost defenceman Josh Meyers following a scary collision in the first period, then battled back from a trio of one-goal deficits to secure a single point. The Aeros ensured that’s all they would get. Jon DiSalvatore and Chad Rau put the puck past Heat goalie J.P. Lamoureux in the shootout, while Greg Nemisz was the lone Abbotsford shooter to solve Houston keeper Anton Khudobin. The Aeros (27-19-1-3) moved up to fourth place in the tightly bunched West Division standings with the

victory, while the Heat remain fifth in the North. Houston forward Jean-Michel Daoust opened the scoring at 16:56 of the first period. In the late stages of the frame, Meyers ran into teammate Matt Pelech as he stepped out of the penalty box. The second-year defenceman, suffering from upper back and neck pain, was taken off the ice on a stretcher and transported to hospital, where he was reported to be conscious and responsive. The Heat and Aeros alternated goals in the second period – Lance
Bouma and Jon Rheault for Abbotsford, and Carson McMillan and Patrick O’Sullivan for the hosts – as Houston took a 3-2 lead into the final frame. Matt Keith, with his team-leading 15th goal of the season, knotted the score early in the third, taking a breakaway pass from Stefan Meyer and beating Khudobin. Ice Chips: The AHL all-star festivities ran Jan. 30-31 in Hershey, Penn., and Brodie was the Heat’s lone representative on the Western Conference squad. The Heat are on the road Friday, against the Chicago Wolves.

highly of ourselves, I don’t know. But we think we should be winning those games. I don’t know if it’s seasoning or what.” Rookie centre Sarah Wierks had a big weekend for UFV, scoring a game-high 21 points on Friday and racking up 15 points and 16 rebounds on Saturday.
In many ways, the Regina program is a measuring stick for Tuchscherer’s Cascades. “That’s a team that’s played at the national championship the last couple years, and they know what they’re doing (in late-game situations),” Tuchscherer observed. “They have supreme confidence in their ability, and we haven’t had those experiences, I guess.”

KLASSEN, Ruth T. (nee Rempel) Nov. 27, 1933 – Jan. 21, 2011 Passed away peacefully at age 77 in the arms of her husband Frank and son Frank Jr. in Minoru Residence. Ruth was born in Yarrow, BC, the eldest daughter of Aron and Olga Rempel. Her childhood was not an easy one, caring for her eight siblings and helping on the raspberry farm. Her life was further complicated by excruciating migraines which she suffered daily from her mid-teens until a few years before her passing. Despite the chronic pain, her musical talents and remarkable intelligence were among the many gifts she demonstrated throughout her life. Ruth was an accomplished pianist and music teacher. She was also renowned for an astounding memory - remembering as many as 400 birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions a year to send out thousands of cards, letters and gifts to family, friends and even strangers to lift their spirits. Ruth was a devoted Christian - her favourite Bible chapter was John 14. She married Frank Klassen Sr. On Oct. 31, 1953 in Yarrow Mennonite Brethren Church. In the following years, Ruth became a loving mother to Frank, Cynthia, Lorne and Jeff, along with her subsequent daughter-in-laws Karen, Wendy/Rose & Kate; grandchildren Kaila (& Kevin), Kelsey, Philip (& Lian), Elise and Aaron; and great-granddaughter Ava. During the family’s darkest times, Ruth appreciated the love and support of sisters Edith (& Bob) Simpson, Ollie (& Bob) Peters and Charlotte (& Art) Shier. Her body was donated to UBC for scientific research into migraines and Lewy Body Dementia in hopes of finding a cure for these brain disorders. The family would like to thank the dedicated caregivers at Minoru Residence, who made her final months comfortable ones. A celebration of life will take place at the Richmond Bethel Church, 10200 No. 5 Road, Richmond on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2 pm. A reception will follow. Memorial gifts can be made to the Gideons International in Canada or Alzheimer Society of BC.

WEDDING DRESS!!! STUNNING JADE DANIELS wedding gown from the 2010 collection. Purchased in April from Ivory Bridal in Langley The colour is ivory with a sweetheart top, is fitted to the waist, then flows away from the body. A bustle was added to the dress so the train can be buttoned up during the reception. It is a size 8 (fits a little small). Cost was $1400 plus $100 for the alterations, will sell for $875.
