Health officers back legal pot

Jeff NAGEL

Black Press

A group of B.C. public health officers has joined a growing coalition of policy leaders urging the legalization and taxation of marijuana. The Health Officers Council of B.C. voted to endorse Stop the Violence B.C. and called for regulation of illegal substances like marijuana to reduce the harm from substance use and the unintended consequences of government policies. “The Health Officer’s Council and other experts are not saying that marijuana should be legalized and taxed because it is safe,” said Dr. Paul Hasselback, a Vancouver Island medical health offiKENDALL cer who chairs the council. “We are saying that proven public health approaches should be used to constrain its use. There is now more danger to the public’s health in perpetuating a market driven by criminal activity.” The coalition argues prohibition has failed and enforcement has little impact on drug use, merely fueling the $7-billion illegal pot industry that experts say is directly linked to the spike in gang-related killings since 1997. Marijuana should be legalized and taxed, so its production and distribution can be removed from organized crime, says a group of B.C. public health officers. Violence says teens find it easy to buy marijuana and pot use among them is up considerably since the 1990s, despite heavy spending on drug enforcement. “By every metric, this policy is failing to meet its objectives,” said Dr. Evan Wood, a Vancouver doctor and founder of the coalition. By regulating the market, he said, the distribution and use of marijuana would be more controlled and would also eliminate organized crime from the equation. It would also provide a source of tax revenue in the hundreds of millions, he added. B.C. provincial health officer Dr. Perry Kendall said he generally

agrees with the public health officers’ statement on marijuana reform although he was not formally part of their endorsement. “I support their call for a review of the effectiveness of current prohibition and criminalization and discussion of a more effective public healthbased approach,” Kendall said. Cannabis arrests in Canada climbed from 39,000 in 1990 to more than 65,000 in 2009, according to the coalition. An estimated 27 per cent of young B.C. residents aged 15-24 used pot at least once in 2008, according to one poll. Four former Vancouver mayors have also backed the coalition.

Officer cleared of misconduct Review determines ‘reasonable grounds’ for strip search Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

An Abbotsford Police officer has been cleared by the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) of misconduct related to a strip search in 2009. The officer, whose name has been redacted in the OPCC ruling on the matter, had been accused of abusing her authority during the traffic stop of a suspected drug dealer. According to the documents, two officers were transporting a prisoner from hospital to police cells on Aug. 15, 2009, when the prisoner told them he recognized a female drug dealer driving a vehicle in the area. The officers pulled over the car in the 32500 block of South Fraser Way, and were joined by a third officer in a separate cruiser. A police check indicated that the woman, whose named was also redacted in the documents, was awaiting disposition of charges for drug trafficking, as well as breaching her conditions. All three officers noticed the smell of burning marijuana coming from the woman’s vehicle as they approached it. The suspect was “lippy and mouthy” and did not follow police directions, the OPCC report stated. Her vehicle was searched, and no drugs were found. A female officer then told her she was required to be stripsearched.

The driver’s vehicle had a temporary permit that was two hours away from expiring. The officer gave her the option of being searched at the police station or in the washroom of the nearby gas station, to save time and avoid her car being towed when the permit expired. She opted for the immediate search, through which no drugs were found. The woman was released without charges, but filed a complaint with the Abbotsford Police Department 18 months later, alleging that there had been no grounds for the strip search. The matter was turned over to an APD sergeant, who concluded that there had not been any police misconduct or abuse of authority. Chief Bob Rich concurred with the findings, but the OPCC decided there was “reasonable basis to believe the discipline authority was incorrect” in determining there was no misconduct, and a review was held. OPCC adjudicator William J. Diebolt concluded that there had been reasonable and probable grounds for the officer to conduct the strip search. These grounds included that the suspect was known to be involved in the drug trade, she had difficulty in following police instructions, and marijuana could be smelled coming from her vehicle. “The evidence which I accept convinces me that the search was conducted in an appropriate and acceptable manner,” Diebolt stated.

Stolen gifts replaced Donations, fundraisers in the community Tyler ORTON Contributor

Jennifer Nelson and Andrew Macdonald had every reason to believe Christmas would be a disaster for their family. They had left their home for a few hours on Dec. 20 before returning to find it ransacked. “We were just devastated,” Nelson says. A thief scavenged the uninsured house for jewelry and high-end electronics, going so far as to unwrap all the presents under the tree in search of items to steal. The burglar made off with computer tablets, digital cameras and even a laptop Nelson’s eight-year-old daughter Thandi bought with money saved up from last Christmas and her most recent birthday. But within hours of the breakin, friends Carrie Gambill and Carly Nesbitt took to Facebook

Jennifer Nelson (left) was able to use the donations to replace a laptop stolen from her daughter Thandi (right) and other gifts that were taken. and launched a campaign to help Nelson’s family. “I was shocked, and she lives less than a block away from me. It made me paranoid,” Gambill said. “This kind of thing, you always hear about it this time of year, but it’s usually not somebody you know.” Donation boxes were set up at Legal Grounds Coffeehouse and Baby Blossom Boutique,

while online PayPal contributions were coming in from as far as Kentucky. Offerings ranged from $5 to $250. Local bands Childsplay, Overtime, Limosis and Guts and Glory even raised money by playing a charity concert on Dec. 23. Nelson, who helps atrisk youth at Abbotsford Community Services, also had

to answer numerous phone calls and emails from people asking what they could get Thandi and her four-year-old stepsister. “They had more than they would have ever gotten,” she says, noting the abundance of clothes, toys and colouring books the girls received in the days following the theft. “They were spoiled.” Although Nelson is still fearful of being targeted again, she confirmed the donations allowed her to replace Thandi’s stolen computer as well as the digital camera that was taken from under the Christmas tree. “I just really want to thank everybody for being so amazing,” Nelson says. “This has been a totally different experience than it could have been.” Despite the massive outpouring of support – Gambill alone collected $600 – the theft is still affecting the family. Nelson gets nervous about leaving the home unattended, while Thandi is having difficulty sleeping. Although Nelson wishes the robbery never happened, the event reaffirmed the Christmas spirit. “This year has just been so amazing, because it feels like Santa is real.”

Boy buys presents for hospitalized children Tyler ORTON Abbotsford News

Keaton de Jonge delivers his back of toys to children at Abbotsford Regional Hospital on Christmas Eve.

Santa’s journey across the world was a little easier this year thanks to a local helper who dropped off dozens of gifts for children at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. For two years in a row, 12-year-old Keaton de Jonge has made a Christmas Eve pilgrimage to the hospital, carrying a giant red Santa sack filled with presents for kids who can’t go home for the holidays. “It takes time, energy and spirit,” de Jonge says. All year the Grade 7 student from Clayburn Middle School has been using his own money – no fundraisers, no donations – to buy toys . He tries to keep the purchases under $5 each and picks up both a boy’s and girl’s toy at the same time to keep the genders even.

The one strict rule is that all the presents must be toys children can play with in bed. This means books, stuffed animals, dolls and action figures are the most common gifts de Jonge buys in the months leading up to the yuletide. “Last year I didn’t know how many little kids can’t go home for Christmas, so I decided to get more presents (this year),” de Jong says. Altogether, he lugged 37 gifts in his giant Santa bag to the pediatrics ward. He wasn’t able to hand-deliver the gifts, but de Jonge says he’s satisfied just knowing kids will be enjoying all the toys he bought for them. He plans to continue buying gifts for next year until he fills his Santa bag to the brim once more. It may seem too obvious an explanation, but de Jonge says he began this gift giveaway simply because he’d “rather give than receive.”

NewsBytes DONATIONS DOWN Holiday donations for the Salvation Army are down about $15,500 compared to last year. Abbotsford Salvation Army spokeswoman Deb Lowell said although red kettle deposits were slightly higher than in 2010, walk-in and mail-in donations took a big dip. “Last year was a difficult year for us, too,” she said. “There (are) still days to make up that difference and we’re hopeful that will happen because the demand is up.” Lowell said it’s not too late to give. People can call the Salvation Army offices to make a credit card donation over the phone or else contribute online via www.careandshare.ca. Christmas Bureau director Dave Murray was not available to comment on the Abbotsford Food Bank’s number by press time. The food bank had set a goal of $700,000 in donations.

ROADBLOCKS SET FOR DEC. 31 Abbotsford Police officers will be out in full force checking for impaired drivers on New Year’s Eve. Const. Ian MacDonald said roadblocks will be set up at key areas in and out of the community, including routes that are accessible to Highway 1. Snow & Ice Control The goal of the City’s Snow and Ice Control Program is to maintain travel routes where there is snow and ice on roads and restore mobility for the traveling public. Our roads are classi¿ed: • ¿rst priority (high volume and strategic arterial and collector roads, and major access roads to hillside areas); • second priority (remaining arterial, hillside areas and collector routes); and • third priority (remaining roadways not identi¿ed as ¿rst and second priority). First priority roads are maintained until conditions are under control subject to worker/equipment availability and weather. Only then are resources redirected to second priority routes and subsequently third priority routes. The City of Abbotsford, which takes a pro-active approach to snow and ice control, operates four anti-icing units (tanks containing sodium chloride solution) on four-lane roads and rural priority roads. The units are used to spray road surfaces before and during a storm. Anti-icing helps keep roads ice free and improves snow removal. Several pre-wetting units, which inject liquid sodium chloride into the salt/sand mixture before it is applied to roads, are also used by the City. These units increase the melting of snow and ice, and reduce the loss of salt/sand caused by traf¿c. The City does not remove snow and ice to bare pavement conditions. The public is encouraged to use caution, and wherever possible, park vehicles off the streets. Abandoned vehicles or vehicles obstructing roadways will be towed without notice to allow for snow clearing operations to continue and towing costs will be the responsibility of the vehicle owners. We ask that you do not plow snow from private properties onto the public roadways as this can result in visibility hazards and obstructions and will require additional time for clearing roadways. The City will work 24 hour days until the snow ends and ¿rst priority routes are passable for travel. For more information, please contact the Engineering Operations Division at 604-853-5485.

Council for the City of Abbotsford intends to repeal Council Procedure Bylaw No. 1318-2004, cited as “Council Procedure Bylaw, 2004â€?, and all amendments, and to replace it with Council Procedure Bylaw No. 2075-2011. Proposed changes in general terms include updating/modernizing wording and formatting; inclusion of the provision for presentations/awards at Council meetings; inclusion of the provision for the appointment of Acting Mayor; and inclusion of the provision for electronic meetings. Bylaw No. 2075-2011 received three readings at the December 19, 2011 Regular Council Meeting; with adoption scheduled to occur at the January 9, 2012 Regular Council Meeting. A copy of the bylaw is available on the City’s website at www.abbotsford.ca/mayorcouncil , or can be viewed at the City Clerk’s OfÂżce, located on the 5th Floor, City Hall, 32315 South Fraser Way, during regular ofÂżce hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays.

Court restores arsenal of roadside penalties

Jeff Nagel

driving. “I have concluded that an immediate declaration of invalidity of part of the (administrative penalty) regime may pose a danger to the public,” he found. Sigurdson’s original Nov. 30 ruling fanned fears that police powers to battle impaired drivers would be seriously eroded just as the holiday CounterAttack campaign was getting underway. For three weeks since the Nov. 30 judgment, police had been unable to issue the 90-day suspensions and related penalties and fees that add up to $3,750 for drivers who blow in the “fail” range over 0.08. Instead, officers at roadblocks faced a choice: arrest the driver and proceed with a time-consuming criminal impaired investigation or else

Black Press

The courts have temporarily restored the power of police officers to issue stiff 90-day suspensions to impaired drivers caught with a bloodalcohol level over 0.08. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Jon Sigurdson, who previously struck down that part of the roadside penalty system, issued a follow-up ruling Friday that suspends the implementation of his decision until June 30. That effectively gives the provincial government six months to pass new legislation to ensure the roadside penalties and process to appeal them comply with the law. Justice Sigurdson noted the government considers the automatic roadside penalties more effective than criminal prosecutions in fighting impaired

issue only a 24-hour suspension. A roadblock that caught two impaired drivers would lose its investigating officers to the criminal procedure and might have to halt enforcement early that night as a result. For roadside readings of 0.08 per cent or higher, police had previously been imposing a 90-day driving ban, a $500 fine and impounding the vehicle for 30 days. That suspension can cost a driver $3,750, including $700 for towing and storage and $1,420 to take a mandatory “responsible driver” course. To comply with the court rulings, the province must ensure those drivers get a chance to challenge the decision. “We will work to introduce changes to the Motor Vehicle Act as soon as possible

in the spring legislative session,” Solicitor General Shirley Bond said in a statement Friday. “We continue to analyze Justice Sigurdson’s comprehensive decision to determine what those

changes will consist of.” Justice Sigurdson also found 90-day suspensions are constitutional for drivers who refuse to provide a breath sample upon request.

He also upheld the use of the immediate roadside prohibitions for drivers who blow in the “warn” range between 0.05 and 0.08. Bond noted the roadside penalties resulted in a 40 per cent drop in

alcohol-related deaths in the first year. Sigurdson has yet to rule on whether B.C. drivers who were punished without sufficient right to appeal are entitled to compensation.

WebTalk Cops exceed powers

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Are you planning to make a New Year’s resolution?

About time the law worked right cops always think they’re above the law and can do what they want this just shows them that they are not but still cost that man money time and health problems ... the cops seem to do what they want. Jody Connor

To answer, go to abbynews.com

Geez come on guys! even from watching cop shows as a kid one of the first things you learn is you always need a warrant!

LAST WEEK, WE ASKED:

Are you in favour of the city’s plan to leave the FVRD?

April Lee Anne Sandford The police were inside lawfully, observed the plant production, and then secured and exited the residence and obtained a search warrant. Now the judge is saying they should not have counted the lights and plants. The police should have seized all the evidence ‘in plain sight’ then applied for a search warrant. The judge is spilting hairs here when they did not need a warrant in the first place for the products that were in ‘plain sight’.

YOU RESPONDED:

YES: 79% NO: 21%

Guest Shot I’ve never really understood New Year’s Eve and the customs that come with it: Drinking heavily, counting down the final 10 seconds, kissing at midnight and, of course, resolutions. It’s a yearly opportunity to proclaim ourselves inferior and “resolve” to do things differently, quickly followed by the annual tradition of breaking those resolutions so we can feel like failures. Not a particularly positive way to start out another year. Add to that the fact that many people wake up on Jan. 1 hung over and regretting what they did the night before and you have a de-motivating way to start the next 366 days (2012 is a leap year). Why this day was chosen as the ultimate time for a celebration escapes

me. Grown men and women drinking heavily and “whooping” it up to celebrate. I often wonder, are they celebrating the promise of a new year or just thankful to be done with the old one? What significance does one day make? I have the same sentiments about birthdays, but that’s another issue. My earliest memory of celebrating New Year’s Eve was when I was seven or eight years old. I recall my mother announcing that my three older siblings and I were going to be allowed to stay up until midnight – that was pretty exciting in 1972. Of course, as the youngest, I didn’t realize that my brother and sisters had been staying up for years; it was just my first celebration. Sure enough, when midnight hit, everybody jumped up, yelled “Happy New Year” and blew some horns. And that was it, time for bed! No lightning bolts struck, no fire alarms sounded, no earthquake, no

massive change in perspective or whatever I was expecting. Kind of anti-climactic. That’s when I realized it was just another day. New Year’s Eve is an event because society makes it one. And yet, every year, society as a

When midnight hit, everybody jumped up and yelled Happy New Year ... and that was it. Kind of anti-climactic. whole is sucked into the belief that this is a special time that has to be observed. Think back and ask yourselves, do you have fond memories of New Year’s Eve celebrations? And I mean memories that are suitable for sharing with the whole family.

I recall the big Y2K fear that occurred just before the year 2000. I specifically stayed up late in hopes of watching planes fall from the sky and computers explode as many doomsayers predicted. Again, anti-climactic. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t enjoyed a celebration or two. I once spent the night at a Vancouver hotel, dancing the evening away in the grand ballroom with my wife – that was a New Year’s to remember. But, honestly, what did the new year have to do with it? I remember the night because of where I was and who I was with. It could have been June 12 for all I cared. New Year’s Eve is just an excuse for people to party. It rarely lives up to the hype. I may sound like a grumpy old man but it really isn’t a holiday. This New Year’s Eve, like last year and the year before, I’ll be at home, watch a little television and likely be in bed by 10 p.m. And the next day will be no different than any other. By the way, Happy New Year!

Need for FVRD dialogue

According to recent media reports, six members of Abbotsford council have instructed the mayor to begin negotiations to withdraw our city from the FVRD. This type of change could impact every member of our community. I am puzzled at the thought that a decision of this magnitude can be made without consulting the electorate. Shouldn’t there be substantive dialogue with Abbotsford voters before making a decision which has unknown and potentially far-reaching ramifications? Am I the only one who feels left out?

Citizens will certainly want assurance of the expected savings. Are there objective studies which attest to this? A decision of this nature must be undergirded by reliable data, not mere optimistic assurances. Further, how will this impact Abbotsford’s relationship with neighbouring communities? Our reputation probably is already somewhat tainted by our willingness to ditch Mission and go it alone on P3 water. Will our neighbours stand with us if we have a disagreement with the province on future issues? On our own we will have little clout. Senior staff would need to

be involved in providing information and possibly in the negotiations. Does this mean other areas of responsibility would be neglected? There is also the matter of lawyers’ fees. What costs do we need to anticipate? Surely it is essential that the citizens of Abbotsford have a clear understanding of possible implications. This is a matter of immense consequence and it is essential that we be prudent, disciplined, and definitely not hasty. A rigorous dialogue between council and citizens would be a good beginning. Art Martens

In defence of Abbotsford hospital I, too, was upset to read Elly Rhoades’ letter regarding our Abbotsford Hospital. It is a beautiful, modern, up-to-date facility. I felt reading Ms. Rhoades letter she got excellent care, and the staff tried their utmost to accommodate her during her visit. I think we Canadians have been spoiled, don’t realize how fortunate we are, and tend to take our health care system for granted. Various members of my family have dealt with some serious medical issues over the last

Citizens need a say on marijuana If George Bochenek (letter: Medical marijuana government approved madness, Dec. 27, 2011) investigates Canada’s, or the U.S. federal government’s, involvement with the medical use of cannabis (marijuana), it is apparent they are not acting at will but rather by demand by citizen involvement. The federal government would rather see their sick citizens suffer rather than be allowed to use the relatively safe God-given plant (see the first page of the Bible). The federal govern-

ment is also against legalizing and regulating cannabis for responsible adults for other use but again they are going to be taken out of the equation because citizens are going to re-legalize the plant. Caging humans for using the God-given plant cannabis is one of North America’s worst policy failures in history and it’s about over. Citizens have had enough! Stan White

few years, and received the best care. I have been dealing with cancer over the last 5 1/2-years – the last two at our own Abbotsford Cancer Centre. I could not have received better care anywhere else. I would personally like to thank all the staff at our cancer centre and the rest of the hospital staff from the volunteers, laboratory staff and X-ray staff for being such caring and sincere people. Thank you! Lynne McNair

Barry Glasgow offered some interesting information in his letter titled “Gun registry data breached.” I was glad to read that there has been “a decades-long decline in gun deaths.” With a few keystrokes I was able to confirm that comment. The implication “accomplices working within the government” was a tad more difficult – I could find no online link to that statement. While I fault no one for holding strong opinions either for or against the gun registry, I encourage Mr. Glasgow to offer a source for the latter suggestion. Regina Dalton

Kicking off new year with South Asian feast Tyler ORTON Abbotsford

Anyone looking to start 2012 with a full belly should look no further than the Salvation Army. For the fourth year in a row, the Centre of Hope at 34081 Gladys Ave. is offering a free

New Year’s Day lunch made up of South Asian cuisine. Abbotsford resident Gurdip Dhaliwal began co-ordinating the annual Jan. 1 feast in 2008 after she originally wanted to prepare a Christmas meal.

That plan hit a slight bump when she found out a number of Abbotsford shelters already had plenty of food to offer leading up to Dec. 25. It would make a far bigger impact, the Salvation Army told her, if more food was

available as the holidays wound down. She then enlisted the help of some family members and they began offering a free New Year’s Day lunch to anyone who came by the Salvation Army centre. She says the most memorable meal was that first year when over 200 people showed up for the South Asian fare. “So many people came,” Dhaliwal says. “I was so happy.” Despite the large crowd, there was more than enough food to go around and many people even took some of it home. This year she expects about 150 diners to make their way down to the

Salvation Army. She says the trick to attracting so many people is to make the typically spicy Indian food mild enough not to alienate those more accustomed to

Western fare. Dhaliwal, along with about a half-dozen family members, will start cooking Indian staples such as samosas, vegetables and rice pudding at 9 a.m.

before serving food at 11 a.m. She says the lunch crowd usually cools down by 1 p.m., but the kitchen will stay open until 2 p.m. if the crowd is big enough.

Question: I am going to Hawaii later on this year and I would like my skin to look more youthful by being even toned, smooth and clear … would IPL work for me and how many treatments will I need? Susan, Abbotsford Answer: Over the years sun damage causes us to have broken capillaries and sun spots which can make us look 10 years older. We have various ways to improve skin texture and tone. We can start by using a combination of physician grade treatment products which include Vitamin A, hydroquinone and sunblock as well as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). Usually 3 - 5 treatments are necessary. If you are interested in a more aggressive treatment we can combine physician grade products, IPL and Fraxel laser – the combination will enhance each others results. You will need to continue protecting yourself from the sun and use sunblocks, hats and sunglasses to maintain the results. Dr. Marianna Snyman

Learn about avalanche danger Course offered for back-country enthusiasts A course in avalanche safety education is being offered in the coming weeks. Roger Friesen, a professor of sports psychology and co-ordinator for the adventure tourism program at the University of the Fraser Valley, is teaching the course, which is sponsored by Valhalla Pure Outfitters. As technology improves, people are able to access increasingly remote places. “There’s been an explosion of people exploring winter recreation in the mountains,” said Friesen.

Every winter, there are stories about people who ventured into these places and are injured or killed by avalanches, he added, but there is also an increasing desire from people who seek winter wilderness recreation to learn about the risks and how to manage them. The Avalanche Skills Training Courses give people the basic understanding of avalanche risk, and how to manage in this terrain. The courses provide basic training in making assessments of terrain and snow pack stability, which then leads to making good decisions. Participants are also given instruction on the necessary equipment to carry with them and how to use it. A member of the Canadian Avalanche Association, Friesen’s training is valued by ski patrol, heli-ski operators and back-country enthusiasts.

Eye Examinations Available Dr. Jonathan Laudadio, Optometrist provides complete eye health & vision examinations at IRIS, Abbotsford.

House Rentals Sales

He said the course is a 2 1/2-day workshop. Typically a Friday evening is spent in a classroom setting learning theory, then Saturday and Sunday are completely in the field. “We give people a rudimentary knowledge of what to look for, and conditions that make a slope unstable,” said Friesen. “It’s the kind of information that every single person who goes into the wilderness should have.” In addition to knowing the conditions that create avalanche danger, the participants will learn how to use the tools to rescue avalanche victims, including a transceiver and collapsible probe to locate people trapped under snow. The courses are offered Jan. 13- 15, and Feb. 24-26. For more details call 604-850-5523 or email to: abbotsfordstaff@vpo.ca.

Kaitlyn Ambury has been creating art since she was two years old. With crayons, pens or pencils in hand, a lot of that handiwork was displayed on the walls in her family’s home. Drawings of puppies, rainbows and family portraits are underneath the paint

The artist received an honourable mention in this year’s Robert Bateman Get To Know art contest. She was the only contestant chosen from

golf star. By year’s end, the 24-year-old was the top Canadian in the World Golf Rankings (238th), and had earned $440,752 in five PGA Tour starts. Hadwin fell just short of earning his PGA Tour card, but he served notice that he’ll be one to watch in 2012. 2. Hawks win AAA championship The W.J. Mouat Hawks senior girls basketball team claimed the first AAA title in program history on March 12, as they edged the Claremont Spartans of Victoria 69-64 in the B.C. final. Kayli Sartori was named tournament MVP after racking up 27 points and 10 rebounds in the final. The senior girls’ title highlighted a terrific basketball season at Mouat, as all five of the school’s teams – senior boys and girls, junior boys and girls, and Grade 9 boys – qualified for provincials. 3. Underdog Bearcats win national crown March 12 was a huge day on the local sports scene. In addition to the Mouat girls’ B.C. crown, the Columbia Bible College men’s volleyball team won the school’s first CCAA national championship. Sherbrooke, No. 2 Briercrest College, and finally No. 1 UBCOkanagan en route to the title. Will Quiring was tourney MVP. 4. Gough slides to gold On Dec. 17, Abbotsford skeleton athlete Amy Gough slid to a gold medal in a World Cup race at Winterberg, Germany. It marked the first World Cup victory for the 34-year-old, who represented Canada at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The triumph was all the more remarkable considering Gough was grieving the death of her father Robert, 70, who had passed away two days prior to the race. 5. Lieuwen leads the way Abbotsford-born goalie Nathan Lieuwen put together a tremendous 2010-11 campaign. He led the Kootenay Ice to the Western Hockey League championship and a third-place finish at the Memorial Cup, picking up WHL playoff MVP honours along the way. His strong play was rewarded at the NHL entry draft, as he was picked in the sixth round by the Buffalo Sabres. 6. Dhinsa dominates Sunny Dhinsa ruled the wrestling mat at every level in 2011. In February, the heavyweight grappler wrapped up his high school wrestling career with the W.J. Mouat Hawks by winning his third straight B.C. title. He went on win four national titles

in three age classes – in juvenile (18-and-under) freestyle and Greco-Roman, junior (20-andunder) freestyle, and senior Greco-Roman. Dhinsa also won gold at the Commonwealth Championships, was 11th at Junior Worlds, and won the Canadian Olympic GrecoRoman trials. Not bad for an athlete who only turned 18 in May. 7. Virtanen tops the draft Jake Virtanen made history on May 5, when he was selected No. 1 in the WHL bantam draft by the Calgary Hitmen. He became the first Abbotsford hockey prospect to achieve that lofty distinction. Virtanen put up eye-popping numbers with the Abbotsford bantam Tier 1 Hawks in 2010-11, racking up 70 goals and 49 assists for 119 points in 62 games. 8. Eagles extend dynasty The Mennonite Educational Institute senior boys volleyball team capped a decade of dominance with a dramatic comeback victory in the AA provincial title game on Dec. 3. The Eagles dropped the first two sets against College Heights of Prince George, but rallied to win the next three to clinch their eighth B.C. championship in 10 years. Jeremy Lieuwen (goalie Nathan’s younger brother) was tournament MVP. 9. Mariners win B.C. title The under-18 boys soccer team from Magnuson Ford Mariners

December 2011 Rotary Report The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit organization supported solely by voluntary contributions. Its mission is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Some of the programs the Rotary Foundation supports include PolioPlus, Rotary Peace Fellowships, Ambassadorial Scholarships, Rotary Grants for University Teachers and Group Study Exchange around the world. Since 1985, the Rotary Foundation has provided leadership in a humanitarian project called PolioPlus now recognized worldwide as a model of public-private cooperation. The challenge of this partnership is the global eradication of polio. Through the efforts of Rotarians and their partners, two billion children have been immunized with the polio vaccine. To-date, 210 countries, territories, and areas around the world are polio-free, and 134 of these have been certified polio-free. Rotary has committed more than $900 million to global polio eradication. The remaining challenges include rapidly immunizing every child in the remaining countries; obtaining the funds required to complete the mission; maintaining high quality surveillance; and quickly responding to outbreaks.

FC won the Provincial ‘A’ Cup, crushing the Shuswap FC Selects 5-0 in the B.C. final on July 3. The Mariners allowed just one goal over the course of five playoff wins, and went on to finish fifth at nationals in October. 10. Hurricanes strike gold The Rick Hansen Hurricanes senior boys wrestling squad won the provincial high school team championship at Abbotsford’s Ag-Rec Building on Feb. 26. The ’Canes saw just one wrestler – Jasmit Phulka at 78 kg – win individual gold, but seven athletes advanced at least as far as the semifinals. Phulka’s cousin Jobanjit won silver at 74 kg, while Maneet Klair (48 kg), Ranjot Sandher (60 kg) and Ravneet Sandhu (110 kg) took bronze. Honourable mention Q Boseko Lokombo, a linebacker with the NCAA’s Oregon Ducks football team, began 2011 by playing in the BCS national championship game. His team dropped a 22-19 decision on Jan. 10 to the Auburn Tigers. Lokombo’s Oregon squad plays Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 2, 2012. Q Nakai Luyken of Yale Secondary won the senior boys 100-metre dash at high school track and field provincials. Aisha Klippenstein of the Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts was a double medallist, taking silver in the triple jump and bronze in the 100m hurdles. Q Brandon Todoruk of the

Abbotsford Cardinals won the B.C. Premier Baseball League triple crown, leading the elite under-18 circuit in batting average (.404), runs batted in (32) and home runs (three, tied with five other players). Q Derek Grant and Mark Isherwood capped their first pro hockey seasons with titles. Grant won the AHL’s Calder Cup with the Binghamton Senators, while Isherwood hoisted the ECHL’s Kelly Cup with the Alaska Aces. Q For the Abbotsford Heat, 2011 was defined by change. With team president Tom Mauthe and head coach Jim Playfair departing over the summer, Ryan Walter and Troy Ward were hired to fill those respective roles. The Heat are off to a terrific start to the 2011-12 season, and sat second overall in the AHL at Christmas. Q On the water polo scene, Robbie Fisher represented Canada at the Junior Men’s Worlds in Greece, while Alexa Tielmann landed a scholarship from NCAA powerhouse UCLA. Q Track and field star Natasha Miller wrapped up her collegiate career at Biola University by being named the outstanding female athlete at the NAIA indoor nationals. She also won bronze in the heptathlon at the Canadian senior national championships. Q Brandon Jobb of the Abbotsford Judo Club won his third consecutive junior national title, winning gold at under-81 kg. Q Sophie Schmidt attended her second FIFA Women’s World Cup

Your home SOLD or Mako will buy it! 778-878-MAKO (6256) www.MakoBritz.com Your biggest dilemma when considering purchasing another home is deciding whether to buy first or sell first. Either way is risky. You don’t want to get stuck owning two homes or none at all......

My “Guaranteed Sale” program solves this. Here’s how it works: • We will market your home aggressively to our database of qualified buyers for 120 days • In the unlikely event your home doesn’t sell by the end of the listing term, if you wish, Mako will buy your home at 95% of market value. • When Mako buys your home, you make no repairs, sell as is! TESTIMONIALS

“Mako is the real deal. He sold my home in 6 days for more money then I could have hoped.” Chantal & Mokoro Okindo **********

“I was skeptical of Mako’s promises but Mako’s marketing plan to his database of Buyers works great. He sold our home in 9 days for full price. Mako’s innovative approach to selling homes works.” Larry Ledouex

Dream big, live big, and act big. You hear it all of the time. Everyone has a dream and yet most people do not know how to get there. The second question that governs my life is “How am I going to get there?” This is an Interesting question. Implementation is a hard process to take. Our vision in life is answering this specific question “How am I going to get there?” Our mission in life answers the question “Why do we exist?” Without a vision, people perish. A lack of vision gets us nowhere. It only becomes a dream. We live a life of regret. “What if”? The what if question, becomes a wish. If my mission in life is to add value to the lives of people, than I need to take every

opportunity that I have to do this. I have to have a specific game plan to achieve that goal. When a family experiences a death, we want to make sure that we take care of them. We want to be empathic to their needs. We want to bring them through a process that will bring help them through their journey. We want them to experience healing in the midst of pain. I understand the value of service and the need to serve others. It is important that we are present for people and that we listen to them. We get there by putting our words into action. We value the people that we serve by the things that we do for them.
