‘Ma’ Hopkins leaves a legacy In 1987, Lenore and Barney Hopkins of Mission were among a group that started the Fraser Valley version of the Vancouver Toy Run so that kids in their community wouldn’t have to go without Christmas gifts. Barney died in 1990, but Lenore worked tirelessly over the years to keep the event going, along with their children and grandchildren. Lenore died in a car crash on Saturday – the day before the 24th annual toy run raised more than $17,000 in cash and hundreds of toys for kids in the Fraser Valley. A5

NewsBytes YMCA FEASIBILITY STUDY
Lenore Hopkins helped start toy run in 1987
It could cost the city $30,000 to perform a feasibility study to see if the YMCA is viable for Abbotsford. City staff is asking council to agree to a memorandum of understanding with the YMCA that would see both parties share in the total cost ($60,000) of the study. If approved (council was set to vote on Monday) the study would be performed in 2011. According to the staff report, Abbotsford is “falling behind” in providing an adequate number of community centres, gymnasiums and pools. Creating a YMCA in Abbotsford would be an “innovative, fiscally responsible” way to address the recreational shortfall, states a city report.

23 involved in bus/SUV crash Tour bus broadsided in rural intersection
More than two dozen people were involved in a crash Saturday afternoon in Abbotsford between an SUV and a shuttle bus. The accident occurred at about 4:45 p.m. when the white Ford bus – operated by a tour company from Richmond – was heading west along Huntingdon Road with a group that had apparently visited the Applebarn Pumpkin Farm on Gladwin Road. A black Chevy Blazer was heading north on Columbia Street and collided with the bus, flipping it onto its passenger side. Witnesses at the scene said the SUV allegedly ran the stop sign, but Abbotsford Police have not confirmed that information.
Const. Ian MacDonald said there were 21 people aboard the bus, including four children. The group ranged in age from four to 78, and was on a tour of various Fraser Valley attractions. The driver was a 48-year-old man employed by the tour company. Two of the most seriously hurt bus passengers had suspected neck and spinal injuries. All of the occupants had some degree of injury and were evaluated in hospital. The majority were treated for scrapes and minor injuries before being released. The male driver of the SUV and his female passenger were both 19 years old and from Abbotsford. They were shaken but not seriously injured.
SENTENCE DELAYED Sentencing for Shane Charles Buckner has been delayed until Jan. 7. Buckner, 34, was scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 12 in Chilliwack Supreme Court for the manslaughter of Thomas Dale Hopfner of Mission. Hopfner suffered serious head injuries following an incident on July 18 in the 33000 block of North Railway Avenue in Mission. He was taken to hospital and died the next day.
CHILD PORN TRIAL RESUMES The trial of an Abbotsford man accused of possessing child pornography will resume Nov. 29 in Chilliwack Supreme Court. The trial for Martin Smith began last week. He is also charged with accessing child pornography and importing or distributing child pornography. He was arrested by Abbotsford Police in 2008. JOHN MORROW

Lenore Hopkins was the kind of woman who had a heart for everyone. She would bring people into her home and feed them if they needed a meal. She would listen to their problems without judgment. Everyone called her “Ma.” The cause most dear to her was the annual Fraser Valley Toy Run, which she helped start in 1987 and played a vital role in every year afterwards. Lenore, 76, was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Mission Saturday afternoon – the day before the 24th annual toy run in which she had planned to ride her

family – including seven children – as they were getting set to prepare the Ag-Rec Building in Abbotsford for the toy run. Hopkins’ daughter Gerry said the family was in shock but they opted to proceed with the arrangements in memory of their mother and their father Barney, who died in 1990. “We knew we had to do this,” Gerry said. The following day, more than 1,000 motorcycles met in Chilliwack and Mission to deliver toys and cash for kids in need. They then travelled to the Ag-Rec Building,
where Lenore was memorialized with the appearance of her white Harley – which sports the words “Ma’s Trike.” Gerry said it was a fitting tribute to a woman who devoted much of her life to the toy run. Throughout the year, she collected bottles, held garage sales and sold hot dogs to raise funds for the cause. It was an important event to Lenore and Barney, who had been married 39 years at the time of his death and raised eight children together. (One of their five sons, Douglas, died in 1980 at the age of 22.) The two were among a group that started
the Fraser Valley version after participating in the Vancouver Toy Run. “They had eight kids so they knew what it was like to not have presents for your kids,” Gerry said. But the couple were known for more than just helping children. Gerry said her parents, who moved from Ontario to Mission with their kids in 1964, opened their home to anyone who needed a hand. Their daughter Kathy recalled that just a few days before her wedding many years ago, Barney brought home two French-Canadian men who had been hitchhiking. They

had no food or money. Barney (“Pa”) and Lenore fed them, and Barney gave them work through his roofing company. “I think they even came to my wedding,” Kathy laughs. Lenore used to ride on the back of Barney’s motorcycle wherever they went, but their son Barney Jr. surprised her with the Harley trike after Barney’s death. She travelled frequently on it, whether it was for long trips or short ones – often to the casino. “She rode all the time. Any and every chance she got, she’d ride,” Gerry said. Tim Renshaw, a member of the Vintage Motorcycle Enthusiasts, knew Lenore through the toy run and her involvement in the motorcycling community. He now plans to lobby to have her inducted into the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame. “She was a person who treated everyone equally ... You can’t replace her. She was genuine,” he said. Lenore’s daughterin-law Michelle, who is married to Danny Hopkins, said “Ma” touched the lives of many people. “She left a hell of a legacy.” Lenore is survived by her daughters Debbie, Gerry and Kathy; her sons Barney Jr., Danny, Bige and Michael; 23 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren (with another on the way). A memorial service takes place Wednesday, Oct. 27 at Cedar Valley Mennonite Church, starting at 11 a.m.

Wish list goes unfunded
Kevin MILLS
Abbotsford News
Provincial and federal funding has dried up for new development in Abbotsford. While three current capital projects – the McCallum and Clearbrook interchanges and airport improvements – approach completion, other top priorities are still in limbo. In February, Abbotsford council released its “wish list” of nine projects in the hopes of receiving funding for one or two. None have received senior government support. Topping the wish list was an extension of Gladys Avenue to link downtown Abbotsford to the Sumas Way business area, relieving traffic congestion. Second was expansion of the Tradex facility, followed by a Vye Road overpass project. The three projects have not been abandoned. “We have had discussions with the Transportation Minister (Shirley Bond) about the Vye Road situation,” said Frank Pizzuto, city manager. Traffic on Vye Road frequently backs up onto Highway 11 (Sumas Way) due to the busy train crossing, causing traffic congestion and safety concerns.
Pizzuto is hopeful it will become a provincial concern. An overpass (estimated to cost about $15 million) would allow traffic to continue flowing over the railway. The overpass project is indirectly linked to the Gladys-Vedder extension proposal. Both would improve traffic in the area. As for Tradex, plans are being considered for expanding the facility, despite a lack of money. Dan Stefanson, executive director of Tourism Abbotsford, explained expansion is desirable to meet the need of vendors. “For the past few years we have faced the same challenges,” said Stefanson. Show organizers have been making requests for more space, allowing for bigger displays and demonstration areas. But the building is running at peak capacity. Stefanson also wants the ability to run two larger shows on the same weekend. He plans to bring in a third party consultant to examine the expansion proposal (valued at $10 million) to confirm the need for a larger facility. If all goes well, Stefanson would like to see construction by 2012. “If there’s no (federal or provincial) funding, we are going to try to fund it ourselves. There are dollars out there.”

Three-year terms OK Rural politicians who voted to keep the current three-year election cycle probably have their ears tuned into the electorate more than their big-city counterparts. They surely recognize that those who voted for them – the pitifully few engaged citizens who do – probably prefer more frequent elections. These voters take their responsibility seriously and want more opportunities to have their say in how councils and school boards are run, not fewer. Voters and elections are what make municipal politicians accountable. We can understand why many urban politicians would prefer four-year terms. Saving money is one argument, but add another year to the term and even more voters would likely become disengaged, giving even less bang for the buck. Elections at least remind citizens of their obligations and bring important issues into their fields of vision. It’s true city councillors have tough
jobs to do and difficult decisions to make. They face tough budgets every year and sometimes elections conflict with those budget discussions. But these are challenges that can be managed without reducing the opportunities for voters to have their say. Another argument in favour of longer terms is the stability an extra year would bring to local governments. But as anyone who as been to a council meeting lately can attest, these institutions are as grey and predictable as the weather in November. What’s more, most councillors are incumbents. At least elections liven things up a little and remind politicians under whose service they labour. Every three years, they have to get in front of the voters and justify their jobs once again. Longer terms might be good for senior governments but when it comes to decisions about garbage, taxes and zoning, local governments can and should be nimble. – Black Press
Images that will live forever in memory Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand There are moments in life that live with you forever, etched indelibly into your consciousness primarily through the ‘eyes’ of television cameras. I’ll never forget John Kennedy taking a bullet in Dallas, or Pierre Trudeau saying “Just watch me” in response to a reporter’s question on how he was going to handle the FLQ crisis. Or the debacle of the Munich Olympics that saw Israeli athletes slaughtered by terrorist grenades tossed into helicopters. I can’t forget Richard Nixon saying “I’m not a crook,” and then resigning in shame. I remember standing in the packing loft of Abbotsford Parachute Centre while grainy film flickered across the screen depicting the first man to step on the face of the moon, or snapping on the TV in my office when a co-worker rushed in to say that the Challenger space shuttle blew up seconds after launch.
The images of the last helicopter lifting off from the embassy roof as the city of Saigon fell below are as lasting as the shock and awe of watching the second aircraft to plow into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre, and then from my living room, watching as they incredibly collapsed one after the other. I have vivid memories of staying up all night watching the skies over Baghdad constantly flash green as missiles were launched, for the most part futilely, against American bombers that were raining death in retribution for the invasion of Kuwait. More than a decade later, I watched a repeat as Bush Jr. tried to make up for the lack of success of his father. But virtually all of those incredible events, and so many others that space doesn’t permit their written memory, were the epitome of, or resulted in, tragedy. Such was not the case last week. I’d been ‘texted’ that the 33 Chilean miners were about to be rescued, so on went the TV. It was agonizing watching the testing of the capsule as it was lowered, then raised again and again. I kept thinking, safe and comfortable
in my easy chair, “come on!” I can only wonder what must have been going through the minds of those who had spent 69 nine days in darkness and fear; who surely could hear the capsule scraping down the shaft, only to hear it recede again and again.
I’m sure no words can describe the joy, elation and hope that must have flowed... Then finally, the ascent of the first man who, regardless of any depth of faith, must surely have felt that a miracle had occurred. I watched, mesmerized by the turning spokes of the bull wheel that carried the winch cable, a heartbeat missed I’m certain every time it stopped or slowed. For me it was chilling, and gratifying. For those who accomplished the rescue, and for those being rescued I’m sure no words can describe the joy, elation
and hope that must have flowed as they slipped forth from the earth that had held them captive so long. The miracle though, was not so much that they were brought out – we have, as they say, ‘the technology’ – it was the fact that they were found in the first place. Chilean mines, and this one in particular, are not only old, ill-designed and unsafe, they are not properly mapped or detailed. It was only by sheer luck that, after sinking a number of exploratory shafts, the would-be rescuers chanced upon the chamber in which the 33 had sought refuge. That tiny shaft, and the fact all of the men had survived the initial collapse and the life-altering ordeal they endured were the true miracle. Getting them out was simply a matter, awe-inspiring as it was, of drilling a hole big enough to extract them. The rescue, unlike all those previously mentioned events, was flawless and the true heroes in this stunning achievement were those who accomplished the task. To them, whose names and faces will regrettably be forgotten, the history books of the world are forever indebted.

letters The choice of good and evil
As I watched the rescue of the Chilean miners last week, I found myself choked up and in tears every time another man reached the surface. It was a marvelous scene that I felt reflected the good that is so essentially present in the human psyche universally. We all wanted all the miners to end up being rescued. But then I thought of how such altruism compares to the tortuous and hate-filled murderous behaviours and attitudes of war scenarios in so many places. Why is the human being so totally driven to help and save and rescue in one scenario, and
Cops for Cancer tour success On behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society, I would like to thank The Abbotsford News team for your coverage of this year’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley. With your support, we raised over $230,000 in the Fraser Valley region. Your coverage has truly led to the overall success of the tour. The money raised through Cops for Cancer funds pediatric cancer research and programs for children with cancer and their families, like free transportation to cancer treatments and the internationally acclaimed Camp Goodtimes. The Canadian Cancer Society fights all cancers by working to eradicate cancer and improve the quality of life for people living with the disease. With your support, we know we can continue working to achieve our mission. Thank you for your support. Together, with your help, we are making cancer history. Chad Embree Canadian Cancer Society
so hate-filled and nihilistic in another? In both cases it is men who are involved. In one they cry, as I did, when a man is rescued, and in the other they cheer when one is killed. It’s time for a sea-change in how humanity defines itself, God and the world. It’s a matter of choice to permit the healing, rescuing forces within us to work or to choose to legitimize and operationalize choices that promote suffering. I salute the Chileans and all the others who choose to do good and not evil. To do good is simple, but it takes a choice. Cliff Ratzlaff
James’ pink slip showing? No doubt Bob Simpson has been a thorn in the side of Carole James, but most independent-thinking British Columbians want to hear more from the NDP than criticism of Gordon Campbell’s policies. Voters expect to hear what programs the Opposition party would implement if they ever formed the government. They have told us many times that they are opposed to the carbon tax and the HST, however,

money does not grow on trees in our decimated forests anymore, so where does the NDP intend to get the funds for their spending schemes? Perhaps Bob Simpson has been trying to tell the NDP leadership that continuous condemnation of the Liberals is wearing thin and in the absence of any alternative policies, Carole James’ own pink slip will soon be showing. LG LD630 Series HDTVs (42", 47", and 55") 10145525 / 10145525 / 10145674. Please note that the incorrect TV brand logo was advertised for this 240Hz gaming bundle found on page 3 of the October 8 flyer. The correct TV included in this bundle is from LG, NOT Sony, as previously advertised. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our valued customers.
The photo caption under the picture of the new MCC building, which ran in the Oct. 16 edition of The News, mistakenly reported the new MCC Abbotsford East store as being 5,000 square feet. The store is actually 18,700 square feet, which is 5,000 square feet larger than the former location.

People cycling between Abbotsford and Mission can breathe a little easier as they pedal across the Mission Bridge, thanks to a new, higher guard rail. Langley-based Seismic 2000 Construction installed new rails that are 1.3 metres in height, and 1.1 kilometers long, on both sides of the bridge. It was a $650,000 project. With the previous lower guard rails, combined with the natural flexing of the bridge deck when heavy vehicles cross, cycling across the span required some nerve. Access to the bridge sidewalks from the highway will also be upgraded, to ensure cyclists have a safe transition from the roadway shoulder onto the bridge sidewalk. That work will be done by Kingston Construction of Surrey, and is slated for completion by March 2011. The contractor is to ensure that one lane in each direction is open to the traveling public at all times during construction, and no work will be permitted on the day before, during or one day after long weekends. Work on the bridge was funded in part from the federal government’s $4-billion Economic Stimulus Fund. The work began in 2009 with a $1.3-million retrofit that strengthened joints between the girders and replaced deck joints. The bridge was built between 1969 and 1973, and is expected to have a 75-year lifespan.

Abbotsford News I Tuesday, October 19, 2010
Mother of murder victim speaks here Wilma Derksen has a compelling story to tell, and the local M2/W2 group is bringing her to Abbotsford to tell it. Nov. 30, 1984 was a life-altering day for the Derksen family. Their 13-year old daughter, Candace, was abducted in Winnipeg on her way home from school. Seven weeks later, her body was found in a shack not far from their home. Through dealing with this horrific experience, her mother, Wilma Derksen, has become one of Canada’s leading victim’s voices in a restorative perspective on crime. She has written several books, including Confronting the Horror: the Aftermath of Violence. Derksen’s journey through grief motivated her to begin Victim’s Voice, a program of MCC Canada. She will be the speaker at the Abbotsford M2/W2 Association – Restorative Christian Ministries fall fundraising banquet. M2/W2 is an organization that works to have an impact on men and women who are both incarcerated, and then also released into the community. The M2/W2 Banquet will be held on Oct. 30 at Abbotsford Christian Assembly, 3970 Gladwin Rd., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The theme for the banquet is Bittersweet: From Brokenness to Restoration, A Holistic View of Crime. Tickets are available from the M2/W2 office by calling 604-859-3215, 1-800-2981777 (toll free), or by ordering online at www. m2w2.com.

ONE DROP OF OIL MAKES A DIFFERENCE. The British Columbia Used Oil Management Association (BCUOMA) is a not-for-profit organization responsible for the implementation of a province-wide collection and recycling system for used oil, oil filters and plastic oil containers. Since its launch in 2003, BCUOMA has achieved significant results in preventing used oil and used oil products from ending up in B.C. landfills. Due to the success of the BCUOMA program, British Columbia now has one of the highest recovery rates in the country.
DID YOU KNOW THAT?
2009 RECOVERY RATES WERE:
Empty plastic oil bottles can be recycled into new containers, plastic flowerpots, plastic pipe, and guardnails.
About one-half of the recycled oil is re-refined into new lubricating oil while the remainder is used as a fuel in asphalt plants and pulp mills. Oil filters are crushed to remove the oil and sent to a steel mill to make other metal products such as rebar, nails and wire.
On July 1 2011, BCUOMA will begin the collection of automotive antifreeze and antifreeze containers USED OIL
76.9% RECOVERY
USED OIL FILTERS
90.4% RECOVERY
USED OIL CONTAINERS
80.8% RECOVERY
You can do your part by ensuring that every drop of used oil, every filter and every container is brought to a collection facility during regular business hours so it can be disposed of properly.
In order to raise awareness for used oil recycling within the province of British Columbia, the BC Used Oil Management Association executed its fifth annual summer ambassador program. From May to September, a team of two students embarked on a tour of the province spreading the message that ‘one drop of oil makes a difference’. The goal of the program was to encourage the responsible and proper recycling of used oil materials. Travelling in a Volkswagen Jetta Clean diesel TDI, provided
by Volkswagen Canada, the BCUOMA Summer Ambassadors visited 457 collection facilities in 121 different BC municipalities, including communities on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast, the B.C. Rockies/Kootenays, Thomspon/Okanagan, Cariboo/ Northern B.C. and the Vancouver Coast and Mountains. The Ambassador Team also attended eight summer events, where they interacted with the public, spreading the message that ‘one drop of oil makes a difference’.

New Jeep not yet in production According to a recent report, Jeep will launch a new pickup truck next year. While details are imited, the truck is expected to be a regular cab model (two-door) with styling inspired by the 2005 Gladiator concept. It will be based on the Wrangler Unlimited and feature additional storage behind the front seats. The unnamed pickup truck has already been green-lighted and apparently debuted at Chrysler’s recent dealer convention. Production is slated for the third quarter of 2011, so stay tuned for additional information.
2011 Chrysler 200 – it’s official and will be available in dealer showrooms soon. It’s styling has visible cues from the popular Chrysler 300. D! T E S C JU UN NO N A

Community examines volunteerism
Local charities are hoping an upcoming volunteer summit boosts community activism. V o l u n t e e r Abbotsford is org anizing the event on Nov. 19 to discuss the state of volunteerism in the city and to find ways to engage people with non-profit groups. “Volunteers are at the heart of social services,” said Jane Cooper, executive director of Volunteer Abbotsford. “You can only give so much money to implement the programs, but you need volunteers to run them.” The summit will take place at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Three panels will make presentations about volunteerism in the city, and lead the audience in a
question and answer period. The first group will look at the role education plays in engaging youth in community service. The other two panels will focus on cor porate volunteerism and the impor tance of giving outside church walls. There will also be numerous exhibit tables featuring the different non-profit organizations who rely on volunteer support in the city. “There are so many (groups) crying for volunteers right now,” Cooper said. “We’d like to see an increase in volunteerism at all levels in the community.” E ve n though Abbotsford was named as the most charitable city in Canada per capita last year, a 2009 report by the Canada
Council on Learning found the city falling behind when it comes to volunteerism. Abbotsford is listed at about 37 per cent, compared to the national average of
45 per cent in other large cities with more than 100,000 people. Tickets to the Volunteer Summit are $50 each, which includes the program

UFV students hold health fair Recent changes in the provincial blood alcohol legislation are starting to affect the choices people make – how will this affect the choices that young adults make about drinking and driving? It is one of many topics being researched by University of the Fraser Valley fourth year nursing students for their annual
health fair. The public health fair is part of UFV’s community health course taken in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program. Organizing the information fair is part of their community education training, explains UFV Nursing instructor Sheila Edwards. Students pick a health issue to research and

For this year’s event, students are developing displays on the following topics: nutrition for schoolage children, immuni-
zations for school-age children, osteoporosis, cholesterol and heart health, high blood pressure, dental health for children, do’s and don’ts of dieting, and drinking and driving for young adults. Buyers’ market After a slow summer, real estate in Abbotsford showed some signs of recovery in September. The Fraser Valley Real Estate Board (FVREB), which monitors sales in the region, reports a modest month-over-month increase in sales on its Multiple Listing Service (MLS) in September. “This is the beginning of the fall market. Our sales, while lower than a typical September, are up compared to the summer and the average days to sale for single detached homes decreased slightly compared to August,” said board president Deanna Horn in a press release. In Abbotsford, single detached houses sold for an average price of $442,000 in September, compared to a price of $426,000 in the same month last year. That is an increased of 3.8 per cent, based on 59 sales. Of the 33 townhomes that sold in Abbotsford last month, the average price was $291,000, which was up from $245,000 in 2009, based on 33 units sold. And 61 local apartments sold for an average price of $164,000, compared with $185,000 in September 2009. Flames shot skyward as Abbotsford Heat defenceman Josh Meyers skated onto the ice during pregame introductions on Friday at the AESC.
’Hogs handle Heat
Abby scores three goals in 51 seconds, but Rockford rallies Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
The Abbotsford Heat and Rockford IceHogs wrung every last drop of drama out of Saturday night’s game at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. Ultimately, the IceHogs prevailed 4-3 in a shootout to complete a sweep of the two-game set in Abbotsford. The Heat thought they had the game won in overtime – Mitch Wahl ripped a wrist shot past Rockford goalie Alec Richards, and Heat players poured off the bench to celebrate. But referee Keith Kaval waved off the apparent goal and assessed a goalie
interference penalty on Heat defenceman Matt Pelech. Abbotsford killed off the ensuing power play, and actually had a golden opportunity to win the game shorthanded. Carter Bancks stole the puck at the Heat blueline and broke in alone, but Richards got a pad on his shot. That set the stage for the shootout, where Rockford prevailed 3-2. In the Abbotsford locker room afterward, there was little controversy concerning Kaval’s decision to wave off Wahl’s goal. Head coach Jim Playfair said it was “the right call.” Even Pelech had a hard time arguing. “When you look at the video, I did make a little bit of contact,”
said Pelech, who had driven to the net on the rush and parked himself squarely in the crease. “It’s little details like that that ended up losing the game for us.” The home side looked to be in control after exploding for three goals in 51 seconds in the second period. John Armstrong, Matt Keith and Keith Seabrook scored to stake the Heat to a 3-1 lead. But the IceHogs rallied thanks to power play goals by Jeff Taffe and Ryan Potulny, and finished 3-for-7 on the power play. The Heat brought a better effort than they had on Friday, when they lost 5-0 to the IceHogs, but Playfair was in no mood to mine for silver linings.
Seabrook had a goal and an assist, but when Playfair was asked whether the production from the blueline was a positive to take from the game, he responded, “We were due.” “You look at Seabrook, he had a horses..t training camp, a horses..t preseason, he’s been horses..t up until tonight,” the Heat bench boss vented. “So it’s about time he stepped up and did something for us.” The Heat hit the road for a trio of games this week: Wednesday vs. the Chicago Wolves, Friday vs. Rockford, and Saturday vs. Milwaukee. The Mission Roadrunners turned in a prime-time performance in CTV’s High School Heroes game of the week, blanking the Abbotsford Collegiate Panthers 28-0 before a raucous crowd at Rotary Stadium on Friday evening. The host Panthers hung tough against the Roadrunners, the No. 2-ranked AA team in the province, for the better part of the first half. Mission broke through late in the second quarter, as quarterback Tanner Pearce threw touchdown passes to Rhys Parry and Kevin Wiens to stake Mission to a 14-0 lead. Second-half rushing touchdowns by Jesse Forcier and Pearce wrapped up the win. The final result aside, Panthers coach Jay Fujimura said the opportunity to be featured on CTV was a huge thrill for his players. “It was exciting to see the school get involved,” he said. “I thought the guys performed really well on a stage like that.” “It felt like a playoff game,” echoed Mission coach Kevin Watrin. Q In other high school football action, the AAA No. 1-ranked W.J. Mouat Hawks notched a gritty 30-14 road victory over No. 5 Centennial on Friday. Hawks QB Cam Bedore did plenty of damage with his legs, rushing for 104 yards on 14 carries, and he threw Continued on A25

Hadley Gwyn of the Mission Roadrunners and Dallas Yassinsky (1) of Abby Collegiate battle for a jump ball during Friday’s game at Rotary Stadium.
TD passes to Brady Churly and John Watson. On the defensive side of the ball, Watson added 12 tackles and a game-sealing interception in the fourth quarter. Centennial beat Mouat in the provincial final last year, and Hawks coach Denis Kelly said Friday’s victory gives his team “a lot of confidence” going forward. Q Steven Martinez and Daniel McCutcheon connected on a touchdown pass with 18 seconds remaining to lift the Rick Hansen Hurricanes to an 18-14 victory over the Langley Saints. The nail-biting win kept the Hurricanes’ playoff hopes alive.
It takes 31 muscles to fold up this newspaper
Martinez threw for 155 yards and three TDs – two to McCutcheon and one to Harpreet Dhaliwal. He also eclipsed the century mark along the ground, rushing for 117 yards. Q For a fledgling program, the Robert Bateman Timberwolves have already developed some impressive depth. Faced with a wave of injuries and illness, the first-year Tier 2 senior squad called up five players from the junior varsity team for Saturday’s game against Moscrop. The T-Wolves didn’t seem to miss a beat, winning 33-0. Bateman held a slim 6-0 lead at the half, but the floodgates burst open after the break.

The Abbotsford Pilots stretched their winning streak to four games with a 3-1 road victory over the Ridge Meadows Flames on Friday. Brad Parker, Kevin Lourens and Riley Lamb scored second-period goals for the local junior B hockey club, while goalie Brad Anderson stopped 27 shots. Abbotsford outshot Ridge Meadows 42-28 as they improved to 8-2-1 on the season. The Pilots are back home on Friday, when they host the Aldergrove Kodiaks (7:30 p.m., MSA Arena).
