Abbotsford News

Picking up a pair of turtles from a Delta home, the Reptile Guy was furious when he saw how the owner had “mutilated them. “He drilled holes into them and put handles on them so he could pick them up and carry them around, and tie them up in his backyard, said Mike Hopcraft, whose reptile rescue service has operated out of Abbotsford for the past four years. One was a sulcata tortoise, which weighs approximately 30 pounds and was probably getting awkward for the owner to carry with his bare hands. The other was a box turtle, about seven inches in size. The box turtle also has a jewel glued onto its shell that Hopcraft has not been able to remove. “I guess it didn’t look good enough, he said. Hopcraft asked the SPCA to investigate whether animal cruelty charges are warranted, and to ensure that

dogs and other pets at the Delta home are receiving necessary care. “It hurts turtles to drill the holes, it’s very uncomfortable, he maintained, and said the tortoise showed other signs of neglect. Hopcraft offers presentations about reptiles and their care at schools, malls and even birthday parties, but has run afoul of the province’s new exotic pet legislation. Under those laws, he is prohibited from exhibiting some of his prize attractions – a spectacled caiman, a ringtailed lemur and a 15-foot albino Burmese python. The presentations have funded his animal rescue operations, but Hopcraft said he cannot continue to operate as he has in the past, unless he obtains zoo accreditation. That would require him to find more expensive facilities than the Peadonville Road warehouse where he is presently based. By December the Reptile Guy will be out of business.

Police seized 300 guns

From A5

the highest licence count is 50-to-59 (1,578), followed by 40-to-49 (1,463) and 60-to-69 (1,224). In Delta, owners tend to be older too: the largest grouping is 50- to 59-yearolds (802), followed by 60- to 69-year-olds (756) and 40- to 49-year-olds (598). Delta also has the oldest firearms owner of the four communities surveyed: one person over the age of 100. In Surrey, the breakdown is slightly younger with the most numerous age category being 50-59 (2,445).

REPORTED STOLEN

More guns are reported lost or stolen in Surrey than the other three municipalities combined. There were 2,400 firearms reported lost or stolen in Surrey, compared to 320 in Vancouver, 280 in Abbotsford and 80 in Delta.

ILLEGAL WEAPONS

It is not possible to calculate

the number of unregistered weapons in each community, but the figures suggest the incidence of illegal weapons is higher in Vancouver than it is in Surrey, Delta or Abbotsford. In Vancouver, 48 per cent, or about one out of every two guns seized by police, were in the restricted or prohibited categories that include handguns, semi-automatic rifles and illegally modified weapons such as sawed-off shotguns. In Surrey, those types made up 38 per cent of police seizures. The proportion was much smaller for Abbotsford (16 per cent) and Delta (20 per cent), likely because long guns are more common in semi-rural communities. Overall, during a one-year period, Delta police seized 294 firearms of every type, one for every 329 residents. That’s more per capita than Abbotsford, where 302 weapons were seized, or about one

for every 526 residents. And more than Surrey, where RCMP seized 416 weapons – one for every 949 residents. Vancouver police seized 350 weapons, one for every 1,651 residents.

THE DEBATE

Those critical of the need to register long guns consider registering rifles and shotguns a waste of money that could be better spent elsewhere. Conservative MP Candice Hoeppner’s private member’s bill to scrap the long-gun registry – while keeping the requirement for handguns – was narrowly voted down in the House of Commons in September. Delta Police Chief Jim Cessford, a long-gun registry supporter, says despite initial cost overruns and other problems, the system provides “timely and reliable information” that helps police do their job.

ABBOTSFORD NEWS - Thursday, October 14, 2010

8 Comment on any story online at abbynews.com or email newsroom@abbynews.com Published and printed by Black Press Limited 34375 Gladys Avenue, Abbotsford.

Expensive statistics Abbotsford has more registered weapons per capita than Surrey, or even Vancouver. In fact, there are more than 27,000 firearms in this city, according to the Canadian Firearms Registry. That may surprise some people. It may even alarm others, but it shouldn’t. Registered weapons aren’t the ones we need to be worried about. It’s the guns that aren’t registered, and the people who don’t register them that are the real concern. If illegal guns reflect just 10 per cent of the total of legal firearms, that’s nearly another 3,000 guns out there the authorities don’t know about, and can’t track. And that speaks volumes about the long gun registry program. The vast majority of the firearms registered under this monumentally expensive system are rifles and shotguns, primarily used for hunting and target

shooting. They are, except for a miniscule percentage, owned by law-abiding citizens – obviously, otherwise they wouldn’t be registered. Police and pro-registry advocates say the gun registry is useful because it alerts them to the presence of weapons in a home, particularly in instances of domestic disputes. True enough, but prior to this legislation, what did officers do? They assumed there may be guns in the house, and conducted themselves accordingly, with the emphasis on caution. And they would have resumed that sensible practice had the national long gun registry been abolished in the recent federal government vote, which unfortunately did not pass. The gun registry does provide some interesting statistics, at a cost in excess of $1 billion. What it does not do is address the real, serious issues surrounding firearms in this city, or any other.

Only rate cut can save the HST Tom

Fletcher

B.C. Views Today I reveal the B.C. government’s strategy to do the apparently impossible and win next year’s referendum on the harmonized sales tax. My conclusion is based on observation and deductive reasoning, rather than imaginary leaks from “reliable sources” as anti-HST crusader Bill Vander Zalm recently conjured up. In case you missed Zalm’s latest vision, he declared it in the wee hours before Premier Gordon Campbell gave a speech to local government leaders in Whistler. He predicted Campbell would announce he has capitulated to one of Zalm’s many demands and will move up the date of the referendum. Nothing of the sort happened, or will happen. The referendum will take place as specified by legislation on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011 and we will all pay the 12 per cent HST at least until then.

But Zalm’s other prediction, that a rate cut is coming, will eventually come true. (As one of my faithful readers reminded me, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.) One hint of this emerging B.C. Liberal scheme occurred in mid-September. Doing a live interview on Global TV, Campbell mentioned that he is planning a major address to B.C. residents on the HST and the referendum. This means a televised fireside chat, which implies some kind of major announcement. Late last week the date was announced as Oct. 27, 7 p.m. Finance Minister Colin Hansen provided another hint in his latest update on the province’s finances. The finance ministry is still projecting deficits until 2013, but the corporate tax revenues that dropped so dramatically in last year’s financial meltdown are now projected to improve considerably by then. Based on that, Hansen could have steered the province back into the black sooner, but instead he has carved out $2.1 billion of anticipated revenue that is not yet committed to pay for debt or services. “That $2.1 billion in additional revenue could be available for a variety of things,

and I think that’s part of what government is looking for feedback on,” Hansen said. It could be used to pay down debt, spent on the ever-expanding health care demand, or on “tax relief ” of some sort. You might remember when Prime Minister Stephen Harper rolled back the GST from seven to six and then five per

B.C.’s HST contract with Ottawa requires the province to keep the rate at 12 per cent until July 1, 2012. cent. Like the price chopper at Wal-Mart, Harper whipped out signs with the new rate emblazoned in big blue numbers. This first appeared on the national news, and was then repeated in campaign ads. Campbell and Hansen have 11 months to execute a similar strategy. B.C.’s

HST contract with Ottawa requires the province to keep the rate at 12 per cent until July 1, 2012, after which time the seven per cent provincial share can be changed. But as Hansen indicated, they could announce a rate cut any time they want. Some time before the referendum would be useful. Also yet to be determined is the wording of the referendum question. Elections BC officials have to approve it, but the cabinet will craft the wording. Once the rate cut is promised, the referendum could then offer voters a choice. Keep the HST and see the rate go down in nine months, or vote to scrap it and see the old provincial sales tax come back at seven per cent. Without a rate cut, what would be the incentive for you to take time out of a sunny September Saturday to go down and vote for the HST? With the promise of a rate cut, the HST has a chance of surviving.

letters As I sit pondering the things that I’m thankful for this Thanksgiving weekend, my kids’ school, Dunach Elementary, is on my list. My daughter (currently in Grade 6), and my son (currently in Grade 4), have spent some fantastic years there. It’s not only charming on the outside. Inside, it’s filled with the kinds of things many parents are looking for – dedicated teachers, good academics, and a safe, comfortable atmosphere permeated by respect and camaraderie amongst the students. My kids love their school, and they don’t want it to close any more than I do. One of the reasons SD 34 is arguing for its closure is that 80 per cent of the kids that attend Dunach don’t live in its catchment. Shouldn’t the administrators be asking themselves, “Hey, what’s so great about that school that so many families are willing to drive cross-boundary to get there,” instead of locking its doors? I would like to see them work harder at keeping Dunach open, and preserving this unique “choice” school. Next year, when I’m thinking about the things for which I’m thankful, I really hope that I will still be able to add Dunach to my list. Marjorie Fix

A rare item will be up for grabs at the 26th annual Ducks Unlimited Canada fundraiser next Saturday. The live auction will feature a stuffed redtailed hawk, provided by taxidermist Frank Gilbert. He runs the shop Fur & Feathers in Surrey. “It’s a very unusual item. I mean you can’t just go out and get one,” said event organizer J.O. Trethewey. “It’s an Abbotsford hawk that was injured and turned into an animal care centre. They weren’t able to save its life, so it’s come back home to roost.” The fundraiser will feature a live and silent auction, raffle draws and dinner provided by the culinary team at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre. Last year, the event raised $40,000 for wetland projects in the Fraser Valley. Trethewey said Ducks Unlimited Canada has had strong community support from residents and businesses over the years. The fundraiser attracts many repeat attendees. The silent auction will feature about 100 items including artwork from renowned artist Robert Bateman, a framed Bobby Orr hockey jersey, a resort lodge fishing trip, and Canucks hockey tickets with dinner and downtown hotel accommodation. Most of the funds raised at the Abbotsford banquet stay in the Fraser Valley. Projects supported by the charity include Lakemount Marsh at the base of Sumas Mountain in Abbotsford. Money in the Bancks Heat rookie tied for AHL scoring lead; home opener Friday Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

Most of the names at the top of the American Hockey League scoring chart make sense, in some form or fashion. There’s Keith Aucoin of the Hershey Bears, the reigning league MVP. There’s Jonathan Cheechoo of the Worcester Sharks, the NHL’s goal-scoring champ as recently as 2005-06. And then there’s Carter Bancks of the Abbotsford Heat – a baby-faced rookie who was passed over in the NHL entry draft. But there he is, tied with the likes of Aucoin and Cheechoo with five points through three games. Even Bancks is surprised. “It’s a little bit of a shock, he said with a grin. “It’s nice to have early-season success and to be rolling with your line. “I’ve got to give a lot of credit to the guys I’m playing with and the coaches for giving me the opportunity. Bancks, 21, signed

MURCH It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Ronald Steele Murch at the age of 87 years. Born in Shaunavon, SK., Ron served over seas in England and Italy in World War II. He returned home to marry his childhood sweetheart, Suzanne in 1946. They moved to Hatzic Prairie and started their family. Throughout the years, Ron worked very hard to support his large family; working for the Dept. of Highways, and construction and logging industries. In his later years, Ron was an active member of the Knights of Columbus; he was a canvasser for the Canadian Cancer Society; and a very proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, where he took his wife dancing every Saturday night to give her a break from their many children. Ron is survived by his loving wife and family of 13 children, 28 grandchildren, 25 great - grandchildren, 3 brothers and 1 sister. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Ron at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 32550 7th Avenue, Mission on Friday, October 15, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.woodlawnfh-mission.com

Community services hit by cuts Reduced funding means programs serve fewer people

Kerrie-Ann SCHOENIT Abbotsford News

Abbotsford Community Services is struggling to maintain its program levels due to government funding cuts. The agency receives the majority of its operating budget from the Ministry of Children and Family Development, and the Ministry of Public Safety. Funding for programs was slashed about $180,000 for the 2010-11 fiscal year compared to the year before. “Whenever we get funding cuts, it means cutbacks to services,” said Manpreet Grewal with Abbotsford Community Services. “When wait lists get longer, staff have to make tough decisions to prioritize between families going through equal

tor Dave Murray believes increased funding to social services can benefit many community organizations. The government can help lessen the pressure on food banks, for example, by increasing financial support for daycare or raising the minimum wage. “The fastest growing group at the food bank is working (people),” he added. “If they had more support, they probably wouldn’t be in the food bank line.” The Angus Reid poll was conducted in August on behalf of an affiliation of 40 provincial agencies involved with providing community social services. A total of 804 adults were surveyed. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.5 per cent, 19 times out of 20.

Abbotsford Heat hockey fans will be paying for parking this season. Council voted in February to charge for parking on Gillis Avenue, College Drive and parts of MacKenzie Road. With the Heat home opener set for tomorrow, some drivers may be caught off guard. Event parking is now $5 on Gillis Avenue and College Drive while MacKenzie Rd. is $2. On non-event days, parking on all three streets is $2 for four hours. Numbered stalls have been painted on the roads and pay parking meters are located along the roads and by the sports centre.

REZONING The City of Abbotsford will hold a community meeting to consult with the public on a proposal to amend the city’s Official Community Plan, on Oct. 28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at New Life Community Church, 35270 DeLair Rd. The proposal is to rezone properties located at 34801, 34811 and 34831 DeLair Rd. to permit the development of a 29-unit townhouse development. For information call 604864-5510.

Local performer lands gig aboard opera cruise ship Kerrie-Ann SCHOENIT Abbotsford News

M

usic has been a passion for Jane Perrett since childhood. Whether she was singing ABBA’s Chiquitita to friends on the walk home from school, or entertaining peers during reading period after lunch with a rendition of Grease’s Hopelessly Devoted to You, Perrett took every opportunity to perform. “I just loved to sing for the sake of singing,” she said. “I always sang songs that had meaning.” Perrett starred in numerous school plays and music festivals while growing up in Kamloops. When she was 18, she was chosen as the most promising performer at the PNE Talent Search. This allowed her to perform the Canadian and American national anthems at the Seattle Mariners/ Toronto Blue Jays games in 1988 and 1989. Perrett continued to pursue music throughout adulthood, balancing family life and singing at local venues. She also started a home-based

business selling beauty products to earn extra money. In 2000, Perrett won the Burnaby Clef Concerto Competition, which granted her the opportunity to perform Laudamus Te with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Her love of classical music naturally drew her to Italian repertoire, and she was invited to perform regularly as a guest soloist at the Vancouver Italian Cultural Centre. During that time, Perrett also spent several years performing with the Dawson Creek Symphony and Choir, and at the Pan Pacific Hotel’s opera evenings. It wasn’t until recently, however, that the 40-year-old Abbotsford resident decided to give a full-time singing career another shot. She wants to release a CD and eventually become a travelling performer around the

world. “I realized that I can’t give up singing because it’s part of who I am,” said Perrett, a three-octave soprano. “There’s no point in running from what I really love to do. It fuels me. I’m not content without music. “ Perrett is now preparing to serenade passengers aboard the Regent Seven Seas 2011 Grand Italian Opera Cruise. The ship leaves Venice on Sept. 29 and visits eight ports before arriving in Monte Carlo on Oct. 9. Perrett’s friend Christina Pastran Jane Perrett developed the idea of the opera cruise and started proposing the concept to interested cruise line representatives earlier this year. When Regent Seven Seas jumped on board with the project this summer, Pastran immediately booked her friend and tenor Derek Johnson to headline the musical entertainment.

It’s an all-expenses paid trip. “I think it’s going to mean an opportunity of a lifetime,” said Perrett. “I’m going to be able to sing some incredible music. Even when you are singing in a different language, it still affects people emotionally because of the way the music is written. I think opera is the most passionate music in the world.” Perrett is learning a new repertoire for the upcoming cruise. She will be performing well-known songs from operas including Giacomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, Gioacchino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma and Guiuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata. Even though Perrett will have the opportunity to sightsee between performances, she would rather spend her time on stage. “I could sing the whole trip. That’s what I’m excited about,” she said. “I find so much joy in sharing the gift of music with people and have a huge passion for performing. I want to make you smile, laugh, cry and take you on an experience of getting in touch with your spirit.”

Jaster will present a demonstration on Keeping the Light in Your Watercolour Paintings. After the demo, there will be an opportunity to paint using her technique. The drop-in fee for the demo for nonmembers is $5. For more information regarding membership or to reserve your spot for the demo and to get a supply list, call Carol Portree at 604-850-9694. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the film starts at 7:30 p.m. This is the first stop in the province-wide release tour. The beauty and grit of Trail, B.C inspired Johnstone to tell this haunting tale. Change your containers Share a little magic with a young person.

Try to create an exciting new look for the fall After a hot, dry summer and a very wet September, Brian our containers have paid the price. Tired, stressed plants are showing up everywhere, and now it’s time for a change. As summer gives heucheras to evergreen sages, way to fall, it’s an opportunity to add a fresh autumn lysimachias, vincas, sedums, look around our homes to tiarellias, ajugas, euphorbias lift our spirits just like the and colourful ivies, there is an amazing showcase of conrefreshing fall breezes. Gardening

From the new varieties of carex, like Everest and Strike It Rich, to the bronze stems of Carex testacae (zone 6) and the new fescues, like Golden Toupe, there is a wealth of colour and textures available today like never before. Even the pure black Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon Nigrescens (zone 6), surrounded with the silver foliage of Dusty Miller Cirrus or pure white violas, offers an opportunity to create a new and stunning look in fall containers. Funky trees and shrubs can be real eye-catchers in containers as well. Anything with an unusual form or shape gets my vote. Continued on B6

The amazing Cotoneaster corokia (zone 7) looks like sagebrush gone wild. Tall, thin Cedrus atlantica (zone 5) and C.a. Glauca Pendula add a blue, tall, slender look to add that all important vertical element. Weeping beech, both the green Fagus sylvatica Pendula (zone 5) and the Fagus sylvatica Purpurea Pendula (zone 5), provide great form and balance to any planter. For a tall, thin look, try the golden and green Irish yew, Taxus baccata fastigiata (zone 5). All of these trees not only add form to your containers, but they also combine so well with all other plants. Broad leafed plants add the fulliness and colourful fill often missing in fall containers. My all time favourite is Heavenly Bamboo, Nandina domestica, especially with so many new forms available today. The deep rich red of Summer Sunrise (zone 6) provides a colour wow for anything pink, gold or silver. The compact forms, N.d. Gulf Stream, Harbour Dwarf and Moon Bay (zone 6) are nice to blend with ornamental grasses and evergreen perennial foliage plants like heucheras. Leucothoe has for too long been under utilized in container work. The compact Leucothoe Scarletta (zone 6), with its bronze new growth that turns brilliant scarlet in late fall, is one of those Now that fall has arrived, your outside containers need a little extra wow plants. Callunas and ericas, work to keep them colourful and healthy. especially the ones with colourful foliage like Erica Mary Helen and Golden Starlet, add both flower and foliage, and the ericas will hold those flowers through winter. The new long blooming Bud Bloomers are also a welcome addition. The containers themselves are where we all need to kick it up a notch. If the container doesn’t say wow, why are you using it? Tall and thin or low and round are the most pleasing forms.

Abbotsford gets the good life.
