At the end of the season, the bulls can continue on with our Derby system. Or owners may take possession and use them for breeding or to compete outside the Back Seat Buckers program. All owners this season will also get legacy rights- giving them first dibs at future program spots. We’ll also have an auction at the end of the year for anyone who wants to sell their bull; animals may also be sold privately at the conclusion of the season. I can tell you based on the bloodlines some of these animals boast that I don’t think you could buy many of them outside of the Back Seat Buckers for what it costs to get into the program. You can of course bid for a higher draft spot in which to pick your bull, but we watched these bulls buck before accepting them into the program and all the bulls have what it takes to win their share of half a million dollars. At $11,900 for a bull, which includes all feeding, hauling, training, care, housing and all event entry fees- I think this is an outstanding opportunity. We have some hard-toget bloodlines and I believe many animals will sell for far more in the future than what they will go for at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on March 3. We have a lot to look forward to this year- more events and more opportunities to make money. We also have the opportunity to bring many new fans and new stock contractors on board with Back Seat Buckers. PBR is a great partner for us and they are 100% supportive of ABBI and will help provide even more TV time and press coverage of our animals this year. I hope you are looking forward to great things in 2012- I know everyone at ABBI headquarters is. Just a reminder too, that they all work for you the member. Please feel free to reach out to us with ideas and suggestions. q Record and preserve the pedigrees of the world’s premier bucking bull livestock while maintaining the integrity and enhancing the value of the breed.

I hope 2012 has gotten off to a good start for you and your family. Thanks to everyone who came out to ring in the New Year and kick off a new ABBI season at the Cowtown Classic. We has more entries than we could take, which is a good sign that people want to compete and it shows that animals are ready. We’re trying to have as many events as possible so please check ABBI’s updated schedule regularly. I’m really excited about what our new Back Seat Buckers program will mean to the industry. We’ve done all we can to make a competition format that is as fair as possible. We’ve prescreened all the bulls to make sure they buck and they will all be cared for at the same facility in Colorado. All the animals will be trained by three of the most knowledgeable bull men in the industry: Kent Cox, Dean Wilson and Joe Baumgartner. They all have different areas of expertise, but they all know bulls and I think it speaks volumes about the vision we have for Back Seat Buckers and the level of support we’re getting from within the industry to be able to assemble this team. ABBI is all about growing the sport and we believe Back Seat Buckers is the best way to get new people involved right alongside some of the top stock contractors from the PBR and ABBI. With 2-year-olds with great bloodlines who are all ready to compete, there really isn’t a better way for fans, smaller programs or larger programs to have a 1 in a 100 shot at the quarter million first-place prize come Las Vegas Finals.

q Mission Statement q

q Provide beneficial services for ABBI members that enhance

and encourage “best practices” in bucking bull ownership, breeding, training and welfare. q Generate interest and growth in ABBI through registered

cattle ownership, membership, education, sponsorship and involvement through marketing, promotion, advertising and publicity of the bucking bull breed and ABBI benefits, services and events. q Develop diverse and comprehensive programs and events

that will educate and familiarize owners, members and the general public in the unique heritage and qualities of bucking bull livestock.

What would you like to know about the ABBI? As the ABBI Executive Director, I sincerely want and need to know what’s on the minds of our members, so I’m changing my column format this year. I’d like to hear from you and find out what your questions, concerns and comments are. No question is too big or too small or too hard hitting. As your organization, we answer to you and we want everyone to be comfortable reaching out to us and voicing their opinions. Every single person on the Board and every employee working in the office is here to make our organization better and work toward our common goals. I realize not every decision we make or rule we pass will make everybody happy. In fact, some will make people unhappy. But everything we do is for a reason and I’m happy to explain our decisions to you. Which is why instead of talking about things in my column, from now on I want to answer your questions and talk about what is on your mind and what you want to know about the ABBI. You can submit questions for me on our Facebook page or by emailing me at: questions@ americanbuckingbull.com. I look forward to hearing from you and wish everyone a fantastic 2012 season.

q It’s hard to believe we are starting our third year of The American Bucking Bull Magazine. I still remember when the ABBI was forming and the magazine (then called The Bull Pen) printed it’s first issue almost a decade ago. It was barely more than 16 pages stapled together and was printed mostly in black and white! We are making some changes to the magazine for 2012. Kaycee Simpson’s column will now be dedicated to answering your questions about the ABBI. He really is happy to answer any question ABBI related, so ask away! Just send an email to questions@americanbuckingbull.com and please include your name and member number. We’ll print as many as possible each issue. We’ve also decided to keep most of our event recaps brief for this season. Since we are a bi-monthly magazine, the vast majority of event outcomes are “old news” by the time we can print it and get it out to you via the mail. The ABBI website is your best bet for up-to-date results. Most competitions’ outcomes are posted within 48 hours on americanbuckingbull. com. I also know that magazines can go astray in the mail, or covers can show up without the insides. Unfortunately we can’t do much about the US mail system, but we are going to start putting the issues online at the same time you’d be receiving them in your mailbox so you can read them at americanbuckingbull.com and ABBImag.com I’d also like to welcome some new writers on board, including Keith Ryan Cartwright who is also the Senior Writer for PBR. We’ll also have some guest writers starting next issue who I think will bring a unique perspective to our pages and an inside view of the industry. The saying goes that the only thing certain is change- so I wish you a year full of positive changes. We’re working on changes both in the magazine and in the office to make your experience as an ABBI member even better. I’ve also started working as the ABBI Media Director, which means I’ll be traveling to even more ABBI events this year and can have the opportunity to meet more of our members. Thanks for your support and hope to see you at an event soon!

ABBI Partner: Westernaires ABBI is proud to announce that we are partnering with an outstanding youth program in our home state of Colorado. The Westernaires teaches young people about responsibility, self-respect, dedication, community and the value of hard work- all through their work with horses. The Jefferson County based group has 1,000 members ranging in age from 9 to 19. The mounted precision drill organization was founded in 1949 and also teaches western riding and horse care. Members may also learn speciality acts like dressage, bull whips and trick riding. “This group and the kids involved are extremely inspirational,” explained ABBI Executive Director Kaycee Simpson. “You know the future is in good hands after spending time with kids like these. It’s a great organization that is open to any kid who is willing to make that commitment. They can start the program having never even seeing a horse before, but by the time they graduate they are an accomplished horseman or horsewoman. But more important than the horse skills they learn are the life lessons they learn and the tools they gain to

help them go on to succeed throughout their lives.” The Westernaires have been around for over 60 years now and the non-profit organization still runs almost entirely on volunteers. Their one paid employee cares for their facility which includes three indoor and three outdoor arenas. The kids that participate dedicate every Saturday ( and often beyond) to the program. Many members come back as adults and volunteer themselves, giving back to the program that gave so much to them. The Westernaires have performed at thousands of rodeos and horse shows and delighted audiences near (Denver’s National Western Stock Show and Rodeo) and far ( they were the subject of a French documentary). The ABBI will be working with the Westernaires on performance opportunities at events and on fund-raising ideas to benefit the organization. Look for a feature on the Westernaires in the May/June issue to learn more about one of ABBI’s favorite youth organizations or visit westernaires.org to learn more now about this extraordinary group.

Super Stakes Incentive Program Want to increase your bucking stock’s market value? Then you’ll want to be a part of the Super Stakes Program. This new program provides added incentive for Bucking Stock owners who buck their bulls in ABBI Events. The Super Stakes Program pays cash dividends for money earned by nominated bulls at ABBI-approved events. In fact, the Super Stakes Program is the most unique incentive program in the bucking stock industry today. Here are some of the program benefits • Bull calves that are registered in their birth year by December 31 will have the opportunity to enter into the program for only $25/ head • As a bull calf gets nominated the sire and dam also gets nominated provided that both sire and dam are verified. • Super Stakes money is divided and paid annually. Payouts are based on the total number money earned by the bulls at the end of the 2-Year-Old Year, 3-Year-Old Year and 4-Year-Old Year. • A list of nominated calves will be published January through October issues of The American Bucking Bull, Inc. This is an added service to provide potential buyers with the information needed to make informed decisions when buying ABBI registered bulls. • The calf will be listed as a Super Stake Participant in the registry.

Information for Bull and Cow Owners This program highlights not only the calf but the dam and sire as well. This is a great way to increase the value of the sire or dam by enrolling their offspring into the program.

How to Enroll: 2010 Calves can be enrolled until Sept 30, 2011 through online enrollment or filling out a 2010 Super Stakes Enrollment Form and sending it into to the office.

For 2011 Calves it is even easier, enrollment can be done when registering your 2011 calves. There is an option to add it to the registration or if you would like you can send your Super Stakes Enrollment Form into the office.

How is the amount of prize money awarded each year determined? • The $25 /head is split up between sire, dam and calf. As a calf is nominated $15 goes into the calf payout, $5 goes into the dam payout and $5 goes into the sire payout. • 2-Year-Old Year - payout is 20% of bull calves nominated in the same birth year • 3-Year-Old Year - payout is 30% of bull calves nominated in the same birth year • 4-Year-Old Year – payout is 50% of bull calves nominated in the same birth year An ABBI bull has a competition career for three years. Based on that fact, the total money awarded in any year is determined by the amount of bull calf nominations in their birth year and then a percentage will be used for each year of competition. A minimal management fee may be taken out at time of payout.

Payout: Payout will occur every year the bull is competing in an ABBI event at the end of the season. Payout will be based on money won.

Please visit abbinow.com for more information on the Super Stakes Program. (continued on next page)

High Hopes for a New Year

T

he start of another season of ABBI Classic competitions brings with it a sense of optimism for stock contractors. However, expectations have been greatly heightened for one particular contractor – Scott Accomazzo – after a wildly successful Cowtown Classic on Dec. 30 and 31. His 816 Ringo easily outscored the competition with scores ranging from 22.75 points to as high as 23.5 points. Ringo won with a final score of 92.5 points followed by Shepherd Hills Tested, Carney Man and Gonzo, who all scored 89.25 points. Jungle Juice was fifth with 88.75 points. “He’s been a silly bull,” Accomazzo said, “and it’s been an uphill battle trying to get him settled down.” The key for Ringo, who he compared to Black Pearl, has been getting him some practice outs in preparation for the 2012 season with some local riders who are good at getting in and out of the bucking chute. He added that Ringo is good about getting

up in the air and will be worth “a lot of points” for whoever makes the whistle. Afterward the Fort Worth, Texas, event Accomazzo said that as a whole his Classic bulls – Who’s Back, White Lie and Ringo among the best of them – are green, but showy and that hopefully three or four will qualify for the PBR World Finals in October. The man making those decisions will be PBR livestock director Cody Lambert. “There were 10 bulls here that were good enough to go anywhere,” said Lambert, before leaving the Cowtown Coliseum, “and certainly the top four or five bulls. Lambert said the Top 5 bulls all looked like they could buck in the Championship Round of a Built Ford Tough Series event, but all five along with the others have time to prove it over the course of several events. They will be among 40 Classic bulls next month in Oklahoma City. “Some of the guys will be competing with them and won’t really be interested in going to regular Built Ford Tough Series events until

next year,” Lambert said. “They’ll finish out this 4-year-old year and try to win as much money as they can with them, so they’ll be more at the

“This was fantastic. Everybody’s talking about how the economy has hurt the bull business – doesn’t show it. Our registries are up in the ABBI and when you have 130 people wanting to enter bucking bulls that just shows you how strong it really is. I wish I could have taken them all.” 18

ABBI Touring Pro events or Built Ford Tough Series events that are also ABBI Classic events. “But they’re going to be going for the money every time like that.” In addition to the 80 that were in Fort Worth, there were another 50 Classic bulls that were drawn out of the event for a lack of space. Everyone from Lambert to ABBI President Brad Boyd and Kaycee Simpson, who is ABBI Executive Director, agree that its success is another illustration of the growth and strength of the bucking bull industry. “This was fantastic,” Boyd said. “Every-

body’s talking about how the economy has hurt the bull business – doesn’t show it. Our registries are up in the ABBI and when you have 130 people wanting to enter bucking bulls that just shows you how strong it really is. I wish I could have taken them all.” “It’s nice to see good bulls everywhere,” Lambert said. “The ABBI sure is looking strong in the bull business,” Simpson added. “The bulls were good, the guys brought a set of bulls that we’re happy with and pleased with. … We had 130 who wanted to enter, which is really amazing

that many people sat around in the winter and got their calves ready to go. We’re excited that they know the bull business is strong and healthy with the economy the way that it is.” Lambert said he and J.W. Hart talked after the first of two nights in Fort Worth about the dream PBR founders had of going to an event and all the bulls perform to a high level. With the help of the ABBI that dream is now a reality. “We never knew we’d get there,” Lambert said. “That’s what we wanted, but we never knew we would get there. We’re there now.

According to Page, it’s fun to play but the object is to win. Among his best was Shepherd Hills Tested, who was marked as high as 23 points by one of six judges. Page said he has some other ones he hopes to bring along as the season progresses, but that Shepherd Hills Tested is clearly a notch above the others. Boyd drew a parallel between this year’s Classic bulls and freshmen entering either high school or college. “Everybody’s been waiting to see how they test out,” he added. “They’ve been waiting three or four years to buck their bull and now they’ve been thrown to the fire and they see what they have. Some of these guys won’t come back and some of these guys will want to pay double entry fees to get in.” Kent Cox has had great success in previous years. At the onset of this year, he said, “I’ve got a lot of expectations for three of the bulls I brought here because I had three bulls here that actually made it to the Finals last year as three year olds.” Those bulls include Carney Man, who split second, third and fourth in Fort Worth, along with Big Stink and Porcupine Puncher. It’s early in the year, but Cox said Carney Man, a bull he is hauling for three-time Stock Contractor of the Year Chad Berger, could compare to some of the other great Classics – Bushwacker, Back Bender – he’s hauled in past years.

These guys who ride bulls now, everywhere they go they’re getting on a good bull.” Some of the most influential contractors – Tom Teague, Boyd & Floyd, D&H Cattle and Kent Cox among them – are hauling Classic bulls this year along with dozens of other contractors spread across the United States from the East Coast to the West Coast. H.D. Page, who is six-time Stock Contractor of the Year, said you always have the highest expectations in January and that he and Dillon

had four “really nice ones out” in Fort Worth, but they saw “50 about really nice ones out.” “Looks like there (are) going to be a pretty steep climb all year,” he continued. “There’s a lot of really, really good bulls.” He explained that at an event like this you not only have to evaluate your own bulls, but also the other bulls you’re up against. Going forward the key is knowing – when he enters any given Classic event – if his bulls have a chance to win or not.

The American Bucking Bull q Jan/Feb 2012

Cox said he saw a lot bulls in Fort Worth that had he not only seen buck, but hadn’t heard of before then. He added that one never knows what other bulls are lurking in the shadows. Edward Martinez agreed with Cox. He added that the bar of expectation is already high from previous years and that each year the quality of bucking bulls continues to get better. “That’s why we know we have to bring a good one to town if we want to be able to play,” Martinez said. He added, “We’re the harshest critics of our bulls as far as if they’re going to be good

enough or not. If I don’t think I have a chance of being in the Top 10, it’s not worth coming.” His top bull – Seminole Wind – was sixth at the Cowtown Classic, while he and his father Tino are also high on Lucky Luciano. Edward said Classic competitions tend to be more nerve wracking for him than BFTS events because of the relative youth of the bulls and never knowing what to expect from them. For instance, Lucky Luciano is tough in the box and he’s still working chute-break him. But it’s only January and the Finals are not until October and as Cox concluded, “We’ve got a long year ahead of us.”

Andrews Rodeo Company: Bending the Rules q

By Sugar Kuhn

ur industry is definitely rooted in historical programs and 2011 ABBI Breeder of the Year Sammy Andrews reminds us of the legacy that the American Bucking Bull bred is based upon. While some may think that new, trendy bloodlines are a hard and fast rule, Andrews Rodeo Company reminds us that history is the only thing needed to bend the rules.

22

The American Bucking Bull q Jan/Feb 2012

Andrews may be one of the largest cornerstones in the legacy of the American Bucking Bull. From owning and hauling the most feared and most recognized bucking bull of all time and the ABBI’s first ever registered sire Bodacious, to campaigning a horde of heavy-hitting bulls on the road, Sammy Andrews reminds us of the institution that the American Bucking Bull bred was based upon. Sammy Andrews didn’t just lick his success of the grass either. A third-generation rodeo stock producer, Andrews cut his teeth on boot

leather and all the things that make for top-drawer rodeo stock. His grandfather, Sam Andrews of Kilgore, Texas produced rodeos in the 1940s and 1950s, while his father, B.D. Andrews, owned rodeo livestock in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Andrews picked up the family tradition with fever when he formed his own rodeo company and started producing amateur rodeos in 1980. A short seven years after forming his own rodeo company he bumped up his campaign and transitioned to pro rodeos receiving his PRCA card in 1987. A lifetime of rodeo production and rodeo stock savvy made Andrews a spectacular choice to represent Stock Contractors on the PRCA’s Executive Counsel for four terms—equaling eight years of quality representation. Andrews Rodeo has continued their deep tradition of family on their ranch headquarters in Addielou, Texas. Sammy and wife Rena along with Sammy’s son James, his wife Pepper and children Summer, Kelon, and Alley produce a large quantity of outstanding rodeos with exceptional livestock they’ve personally bred and raised themselves. While Sammy spends the majority of his time producing and hauling to rodeos, James manages the Andrews breeding program. “James is the one,” explained Sammy, “that takes care of all of the breeding and taking the bulls to the younger aged events. He really likes going to all the ABBI events. He isn’t like me and doesn’t have to go look up pedigrees.

He knows the breeding program like the back of his hand. He puts a lot of time and effort into that aspect of our deal.” Sammy Andrews was instrumental in hauling and promoting many historical bulls that have become key to today’s American Bucking Bull. Some of these bulls that Andrews promoted and that have influenced the DNA database are; Skat Kat, Super Dave, Copper Top, Bodacious, Copperhead, Tumble Weed, High Voltage, Hooter, Washita Outlaw, Outlaw Willie, Wild Toad, Erkel, Shake Rattle N Roll, Super Freak, Dagger, Sam’s Town, Achey Breaky, Slick Willy, Hedge Hog, Rompus, Bo's Excuse, Bo Dippin, Erksme, Wild Weed, Little Weed, Bo Talkin’, Jim Dippin’, Rena's Pet, Red Onion, Culpepper, Tyrant, Wild Onion, Drop Zone, Reeses Pieces and the sire of the day Bodacious grandson -27 Fender Bender, producer of the 2011 ABBI Classic World Champ Back Bender. “We still have Fender Bender,” said Andrews, “and we do sell some of his genetics from time to time. It’s been a really good year for Fender Bender calves. The set of Fender Bender calves that Back Bender was out of was a really strong set of good calves. In that set was also Jaw Bender that just went to the NFR this past year and bucked really good out there. There have been some others out of that set also, so we’ve had some real good luck with Fender Bender.” Back Bender’s ABBI success started last season in 2010 as a 3-yearold. strides during his Derby season and may have been brushed off by some. In fact, when it came to getting Back Bender out in the spotlight, there were some that passed on the opportunity.

could be maximized? “When we started him we could tell he was pretty special,” explained Andrews. “He had something different. He really bucked and turned back right there when we started him out with a dummy. He did really, really good in our opinion. “James and I didn’t have the time or the chance to go to those bigger classics and PBRs and Kent (Cox) did. We know from experience that exposure is the key. You have to get them out there and expose them and we really didn’t have the time and really couldn’t afford to haul him like we needed to. It doesn’t make economic sense to try and haul only one bull like that,” said Andrews. “I think he got under estimated in 2010,” said Kent Cox. “I think people didn’t realize he was only a 3-year-old, but I saw something in him. I saw some real potential in him so Doug Ackerman and I partnered on him.” “Since we didn’t have the time or opportunity to haul him,” continued Andrews, “and Kent did, that’s the way we went. You know there are a lot of bulls that will buck hard at home, but when you put them on the road, they will fall apart on you. Those types of bulls are like a football player who thrives only with the home-field advantage. You just have to wait and see what they will do as you roll the diesel smoke over them. Selling him worked out. Obviously Kent handled him right and did a really good job with him,” When it comes to the story of the Breeder of the Year, it’s the same old question. What was it about Back Bender that made his owners notice him and press to get him into the right hands so that his potential

He had it—the whip and drop plus he turned back right there and really bucked. We saw that and knew he was definitely our pick of the litter.” That pick of the litter paid off and after a solid, respectable year as a 3-year-old, Back Bender came calling as he graduated to full Classic status. The bovine had multiple event wins but none more important than the last of the season which sealed his Classic Year-End title and propelled him to the World title which ultimately made Sammy Andrews the 2011 ABBI Breeder of the Year Award recipient. “Receiving the ABBI’s Breeder of Year award means a lot,” shared Andrews. “Breeding is something that we’ve really worked hard at for a long time. We have been breeding since 1989 and to actually win something that’s specific to breeding says that we’ve been doing something right through the years. When it comes to breeding this is the only award out there that really focuses on that and it really means something when you’ve strived to improve your herd and lineages.” The 2002 PRCA Contractor of the Year looks forward to Back Bender’s future in the PBR and with his new owners Wolf Creek Cattle and Robinson Bucking Bulls. “Jeff Robinson’s been contractor of the year a couple times now so I am sure he will take good care of him and do a good job with him. We wish them the best and hope he continues to be a good bull for him. I think Back Bender handled being bucked back to back at the PBR Finals pretty good and we hope he will continue.” When it comes to bending the rules of current breeding trends, Back Bender is a true example of how important genetic history and preservation is. He’s also an example of the importance of recognizing the men that have spent generations crafting and cultivating American Bucking Bull genetics.

he quest for the next ABBI Classic diamond in the rough is underway and it’s a quest that’s never ending for many competitive bull owners. But the real question is how does one go about finding these diamonds in the rough and just what does it take to be one? Across the board, a seeker has several options if this is the conquest. The oldest and

Photography by Andy Watson most painstaking method is breeding and raising your own champion. Many have tried and many now realize what a difficult task this truly is. D&H Cattle Company knows just how difficult it is breeding and raising a legit Classic contender—first hand. Dillon and H.D. Page have had multiple Classic champs and not all have been home grown, but those diamonds they have raised have been plucked from hundreds of initial prospects in any given year.

that are good bulls and we have raised our share of those types but it takes a special bull to compete at the top end in the ABBI Classics. It’s not hard to find or raise a bull anymore that has tools like kick, spin, some speed and some air, but he also has to have something special that sets him apart from the rest. Some guys call it wow factor. Then when you find one that does have something special, he has to be able to do it under the best riders in the PBR. There

“We have had some success in the classics for sure,” shared H.D. Page, “but true Classic contenders are hard to come by. to keep him sound throughout the season. It’s definitely not as easy as it sounds. ” Another example of a home-grown hero is 2009 World Classic champ Black Pearl who was not only an exceptional Classic contender, but also an accomplished bull under dummy— which is rare. He is also an example of a group effort which is often paramount in the creation of a top-drawer contender.

Toby Floyd

“Black Pearl was bred and raised here, but it takes much more than that to cross that Classic champ finish line,” said Steve Raven-

30

scroft. “It took a group effort. Initially you’d never know he was the caliber bull that he turned into though. We had sent him to Texas and even had someone pass on him, but we felt strongly about him and saw something in him that we believed in, so we kept on with him and it paid off in the end.” Sticking with him would ultimately be a decision that earned the bovine the clout of being the ABBI’s highest money earner to date. “We stayed with that feeling we had about him and he started to come on in the futurities,” added Julie Ravenscroft. “Eventually we sent him to Brad (Boyd) and Toby (Floyd) and through a combined effort and partnership on him we were able to maximize his potential. A lot of that had to do with Toby, who we think a lot of as a bull man. He is definitely a huge part of Black Pearl’s success.” When it comes to finding Classic bulls that are true diamonds in the rough, getting overlooked is something that seems to happen from time to time. What one bull savvy person misses another picks up on, cultivates and finds success with. 2011 World Champion Back Bender is another example of this phenomenon. The bovine had been looked at by others in the industry, but his underlying potential was missed until Kent Cox spotted it in the future star, made a commitment and eventually saw his vision materialize.

The American Bucking Bull q Jan/Feb 2012

Kent Cox

“Back Bender is a bull that was raised by Sammy Andrews but was for sale and passed up by some other people,” explained Cox. “But I saw something in him that others didn’t and I took the chance on him. We hauled him with some success as a 3-year-old and at that point I think most people still didn’t recognize what I did in him. He had that huge kick out of there and he always really bucked no matter what, day in and day out. He had that strength and consistency that they have to have to make it. There was something really solid and certain in him and I could see his potential. I don’t know that it’s possible to put it into words exactly, but those great bulls have it. It catches your attention. They’re special.” It’s no secret that Cox is perhaps the most successful handler in the industry, especially when it comes to recognizing and cultivating raw talent. He’s done it three times. He did it in 2007 with Troubadour and 2010 with Bushwacker (also both bulls bred and raised by their owners), and again last season with Back Bend-

er. Cox clearly has an eye for certain things that translate to later success. Although Cox’s explanation may seem limited, 2007 Classic World Champ Troubadour also possessed exactly what Cox describes. He was an exceptional athlete that exhibited unmatched consistency and had a lengthy and decorated career. “Troubadour really bucked and he did his job every time he was out without fail,” said Cox. “He definitely showed heart especially later in his career. Even when he was hurt, he tried his guts out.” When it comes to the triple-crown that Cox has displayed Bushwacker represents uniqueness in the ever-unclear quest for a diamond in the rough. “Bushwacker was not as impressive under a dummy,” explained Cox, “and as a matter of fact didn’t even turn back for quite some time, but he was extremely athletic and when it came to putting everything he had into it, he always did. I knew with patience there was a pretty good chance he would put it all together and I knew if he did he’d be very hard to beat.” And put it together he certainly did. Bushwacker has enjoyed a spectacular career which came to a culmination last year when he crested his World Champion Classic crown with that of the PBR World Champion Bucking Bull title. Another interesting aspect Cox talks about in the hunt for a diamond in the rough are the various levels of maturity encountered among potential Classic contenders. “I think a lot of people give up on them too soon sometimes,” says Cox. “In many cases Classic bulls don’t show their potential until

32

they are late 3-year-olds and sometimes even 4-year-olds. It seems to me that many bulls that make good Classic bulls are later maturing in their type. Sometimes people may not have the patience or many the resources to wait on them and they end up giving up on them too quick.” These success stories are inspiring indeed but if you aren’t a diehard breeder, do not despair. Many people have turned to various sources in their quest for that potential diamond in the rough. Options along these lines

and access to many of the country’s best programs including those known and un-known, large and small. A consultant often spends a good portion of their time interacting with breeders and buyers sifting through mounds of video footage, conducting background research and analysis on potential prospects and then passes on what they feel are possible diamonds in the rough to their clients. While they generally charge sellers a commission they are a neutral party when it comes to evaluating potential.

2010 World Champion Bushwacker

range from utilizing industry bull-men, bull trainers, handlers, even bull brokers or consultants to help sift through the sea of hopefuls. In fact Back Bender’s co-owner Doug Ackerman did just that. He came to Cox and let Cox do the searching which ended with their partnership and title win with Back Bender. The course of the independent consultant or bull broker in the quest for a diamond in the rough is helpful for those with limited industry contacts or connections. These individual’s come with deep connections to the industry

The American Bucking Bull q Jan/Feb 2012

At the end of the day there is no surefire way of finding that diamond in the rough waiting to be cultivated into the next world champion, but there are some options along the way. Whether you hope to breed and raise your own diamond in the rough, use an industry consultant to do the mining for you, or are willing to roll up your sleeves and become an independent, sleuth determined to go find your own potential gem, the painstaking process will prove worthwhile when you find yourself inside the winner’s circle.

BACK SEAT BUCKERS CONT.

From Broncos to Bulls by Susan Bedford

One of the most decorated men in the history of the gridiron is now setting his sights on a new field to conquer- and this one is covered in dirt. NFL icon John Elway is becoming a stock contractor- and his bull will soon be bucking at a Built Ford Tough Series arena near you. The two-time Super Bowl winner is part of the exciting new Back Seat Buckers program developed by PBR and ABBI.. "It's very exciting for us to have someone like John Elway involved," stated ABBI Executive Director Kaycee Simpson. "Not only is he a football legend, he was a Bronco. And since PBR and ABBI call Colorado home, that makes his involvement extra special for all of us."

42

The Back Seat Buckers bull draft will take place at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas on March 3. As the NFL's #1 draft pick in 1983, and a New York Yankee's draft pick in 1981 while still at Stanford, Elway knows a thing or two about the importance of draft position and of making the right career decisions. Although Elway played against the Dallas Cowboys many times during his illustrious career, it will be his first battle at the state-of-the-art stadium that was completed just three years ago. Elway will go against 99 other Back Seat Buckers owners at Cowboys Stadium in an attempt to secure the best possible draft position to select his bull. The draft will be held

The American Bucking Bull q Jan/Feb 2012

before the PBR's Dickies Iron Cowboy III event. Elway will name his bull "Mile High Miracle"in homage to the city of Denver and the Bronco's home field. That bull will buck against the 99 other 2-year-old athletes at four regular season events held during BFTS weekends and at the Back Seat Buckers Finals in Las Vegas. Elway was a starting quarterback for a record five Super Bowls. It takes years of dedication and exceptional talent to earn a Super Bowl ring, but anyone can take home the Back Seat Buckers top prize in 2012. Elway is just hoping he's the one who picks the bull that can add a gold buckle to his trophy case.

The Great One “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” by Susan Bedford

That quote from “The Great One” helps to explain his extraordinary success on the ice rink and in life. It might also explain Wayne Gretzky’s recent decision to become a stock contractor through the PBR and ABBI’s Back Seat Buckers program. With a 1-in-100 chance of picking a bull that could go all way and earn the $250,000 championship title, it seems like Back Seat Buckers was a shot Gretzky was destined to take. At 6 feet tall and 160lbs when he started his hockey career at age 17, Gretzky was considered too small to make it in the hard-checking world of professional players. Not only did Gretzky thrive on the ice, he became the greatest player the sport had ever

seen. By the end of his career, Gretzky had broken or tied 61 NHL records. This season history will be made when 100 Back Seat Buckers Futurity bulls compete against each other at five events for their piece of a half a million dollars in prize money. Gretzky may very well see his name in a different kind of record book by year’s end. It’s been said that greatness recognizes greatness. If that’s true, Gretzky’s pick at the bull draft on March 3 at Cowboy Stadium may come as a surprise. While others research the elite bloodlines and pedigrees of the 100 contenders, pour over video clips of bulls bucking and debate size and conformation- Gretzky may just recognize an animal with heart.

Perhaps no athlete besides a PBR cowboy understands the concept of “heart” better than Gretzky. “Heart” is drive, determination and desire coupled with hard work- all characteristics Gretzky has in spades. These are qualities all the greatest athletes share and perhaps it’s also true of future four-legged stars. But maybe Gretzky will just go with the number that’s always brought him luck and pick the #99 bull at the draft. No matter what strategy the legend goes with, don’t be surprised if his scores even more success with Back Seat Buckers. After all, Gretzky does know his way around a barn.

e might play for the New York Giants, but away from the football field he’s a cowboy for life. Bear Pascoe grew up on a cattle ranch not far from Bakersfield, Calif. It’s rough country and not the easiest to work in. In fact, PBR bullfighter Shorty Gorham, who grew up on a ranch outside of San Diego, quickly pointed out that ranch hands in that part of the state have to be above average.

It takes good horses and good dogs, which is something Pascoe family had in spades. “You gotta be tough,” Gorham said, “and Bear fits the bill.” By the time he could walk Pascoe had learned to ride and said he was already trying his best to rope. At 15, he won his first truck in a team roping contest in Rancho Marietta, Calif, but when he was even younger his parents had him out of bed and saddled on a horse before sunrise.

The western way of life and the aforementioned work ethic he developed, which is a credit to his parents, has served him well in his football career. “By the time I was 6, 7, 8, 9 years old I was putting in a full day’s work,” he explained, “working right along grown men. That mentality definitely carries over into the football world – being tough and, you know, getting the job done.” Gorham added, “All of our childhood lives carryover into our professional lives and growing up there was no give-up out there. You’re a long ways from anything, you don’t have anybody to help you, you only have yourself and you gotta fight through bad times and make it work. No matter what the work has to get done.” Pascoe, who attended his first Built Ford Tough Series event in January of 2011, and Gorham met last May on a ranch in California. Much like when Pascoe met Ross Coleman, Luke Snyder and Brendon Clark five months earlier, they hit it off and became fast-friends.

into it, read all the details, and it sounded really good. “I’m excited about it and looking forward to it.” Reggie Jackson, a World Series hero known as Mr. October, is also involved in Backseat Buckers along with Wayne Gretzky, John Elway, Boomer Esiason and Chad Ochocinco. Pascoe said he was at a team roping when Gorham called last spring to tell him Ochocinco was going to ride a bull – or at least attempt to ride a bull – at a BFTS event in Duluth, Ga.

“It wasn’t like they put him on some practice bull either,” Pascoe said. “They put him on Deja Blue and that’s a good bull. It was neat to see and I was glad he was participating and bringing a light to the event.” This year, none of the owners have to climb in the chute much less feed their bulls. The way the program is structured everything from raising the bull to hauling the bull is taken care for them. Back Seat Buckers is a program of 100 elite Futurity bulls that will compete against each other this season for a total of half a million dollars in prize money. The Finals event winner will earn his owner $250,000. “We have some big names in it with me,” Pascoe said.

“Hopefully we’ll shine some light on this great sport and, hey, if I have a great bull maybe I’ll start my own bucking bull program.” “To have him involved with this will be great for us,” Gorham said, “because he is involved in the limelight to a whole other level. When people see that Bear Pascoe is involved in bull riding, well, maybe it’ll interest them too.” Pascoe will be among the participants on hand in March at Cowboys Stadium for the bull draft. Although many sports stars are involved with the program, what truly makes it special is that it gives anyonefrom a housewife in Los Angeles to a Hall of Famer- an equal shot at owning a champion bull.

Legends

A Blast from the Past q q q q q q q q by Sugar Kuhn

q In the American Bucking Bull’s series Blast from the Past, veterans of the sport both human and bovine are remembered and reflected upon. These are men who inspired and improved the sport of bull riding that we know today, and bulls that earned notoriety in the arena and have gone on to become foundations of the American Bucking Bull breed. These are the men and bulls that today’s sport have been stimulated by. In this Blast from the Past, we remember one of the true legends of bull riding from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, ’02 PBR Ring of Honor inductee Denny Flynn and bovine counterpart 018 Cowtown of Beutler & Sons Rodeo Company.

The Rider

The Bull

Denny Flynn never did win a PRCA World Title, but he earned the respect of the industry coming very close on multiple occasions, qualifying for the NFR 14 times and solidifying 3 NFR average wins in the process. He is also remembered and respected for his 1979 ride aboard Red Lightning marking 98 points (which was unheard of during this time) in Palestine, Illinois. This high mark record stood for over a decade until Wade Leslie rode Wolfman for 100 points in 1991. Flynn was not only a superb example of a bull rider, but also of a person of strong character. Flynn’s depth of character shines through when he stated that “he has absolutely no hard feelings” toward Leslie for breaking his record. In fact he’s been heard supporting the historical perfect ride on occasion noting that judges had already doled out a 94-95 and a 97 that day prior to Leslie’s out. “There’s no footage of my ride, but there is of Leslie’s,” Flynn has testified. “I feel sorry for the guy because people picked it apart watching and re-watching the footage. Wolfman was a spinning top and he made a great ride. With the other marks that day they had to at least make him more than the 97 that stood.” Flynn won NFR average titles in 1975, 1981 and 1982. Perhaps his closest run at a world title took place in 1980 when he went into the NFR in the number one spot. When the dust cleared he’d won $4,500, but lost the world title by a mere $188.

Flynn’s match-up in this issue of Blast from the Past is remembered as a true, historical rank bull. The bull owned and hauled by Beutler & Sons Rodeo was nominated to the NFR five times from ’84-’88. In ’84, his first trip to the NFR, he was awarded the Bucking Bull of the Finals title— a true acknowledgement of his prowess. He followed it up the next year by nabbing both the PRCA Bucking Bull of the Year and Bucking Bull of the Finals titles. Besides his own coveted career in the arena, he has gone on to produce some super salty offspring that have either bucked themselves or produced big-league caliber bovines. Cowtown daughters have become a highly sought after piece of today’s rank bull producing female profile.

Pictured right > Denny Flynn attempts Beutler and Sons Rodeo Company’s 018 Cowtown during the 4th round of the 1985 NFR. In 1985 the bovine nabbed both the PRCA Bucking Bull of the NFR and PRCA Bucking Bull of the Year titles. Jennings photo

American Bucking Bull Breeders Gather Applicable Semen Sexing Technology Insight from the Dairy and Beef Industries

The Status of Sex Sorted Semen by Dustin T. Dean, PhD Director of Beef Programs Sexing Technologies

Thus far, ST has produced several million straws of dairy sexed and transformed it into a commercial reality. semen. However, things have begun to change recently as ST is making During spermatogenesis, each sperm cell is ei- a full court press in beef cattle. Each month, major semen companies are sorting more and more ther issued an X (female bearing) or a Y (male beef bulls, more producers are bringing their own bulls to ST’s headbearing) chromosome. However it is still fairly new to beef producers and new technologies into straws for artificial insemination that will usually require more education and promotion for them to be adopted by end users. For ST, that promotion lies in the basis of sound economcontain at least 90% male or female bearing ics. In most beef operations, there can be a significant value in gender sperm cells. The technology to sort live sperm cells was originally developed by the USDA in the late 1980s. Later, Sexing Technologies ultimately obtained the exclusive license to this patent by purchasing XY Inc. and has located its global headquarters south of College Station, TX for more than a decade. With a few recent additions, ST now has offices in 8 countries sorting semen primarily on cattle, whitetail and red deer, and quarter horses. Currently, every major semen company in the world has ST’s semen sorting machines at their headquarters offices. On a daily basis, these machines produce thousands of straws of sexed semen from the bulls in their line-up. ST also owns a bull stud station in Navasota and in Wisconsin housing over 200 beef and dairy bulls as well as a large ET and IVF business with over 1000 donors and recipient females primarily for producing sexed embryos.

difference. That value difference can be a couple hundred dollars in some operations and up to several thousand in some seedstock operations. Either way, it is the significant value in gender difference that generates a high return for the added investment. The growing beef sexed semen and embryo demand has also pushed the company to expand its offices in to the Midwest. ST has now opened Sexing Technologies Nebraska, which originated with the purchase of a facility 45 minutes north of Grand Island near the town of Fullerton. Here the company will offer the same services it offers in Navasota, from custom semen sorting to the production of sexed flushed and IVF embryos. Producers can also have their bull collected at their local collection center to produce sexed semen. ST has recently begun working with independent collection centers to have fresh ejaculates shipped overnight

to their semen sorting laboratories. ST receives the fresh ejaculate the next morning and sorts it in to the gender the customer requests.

Addressing Conception Rate Questions Sexing Technologies normally produces two kinds of straws of sexed semen. One solely for AI that is packed at 2.1 million cells, and another for flushing packed at 5 million cells. Either straw can be produced with a minimal 90% purity that is to say at least 90% of the sperm cells in the straw are the sex the customer requests. In addition, each individual sperm cell is selected one by one, so only the highest quality cells get selected for straws of sexed semen. To achieve optimal results, producers need to be efficient with con-

Good management, including nutrition programs, estrus synchronization and detection, etc, are all key when using sexed semen or any AI program. Given its widespread use in the dairy industry, many bulls have already been identified that produce high quality ejaculates that are prime for sorting. In the beef industry, we’re still in the process of finding those bulls that work well and those that don’t. So far, roughly 20% of the beef bulls collected have not had ejaculates with high enough quality to be sorted. This usually stems from too many head or tail problems, or issues with the cells dying off quickly after sorting. Usual conception rates with sexed semen will run a few percentage points lower than conventional semen. This is typically due the lower concentration of the sex sorted straws. On average, producers can expect to see 85% of what they normally achieve with conventional semen. For

example, if a producer usually gets 70% with traditional semen, that same producer should see around 58% to 60% with sexed semen. The benefit is that at least 90% of those calves will be the gender the producer needs. Independent economic analysis has shown that the slight reduction in conception rate combined with the extra production of the desired gender will deliver a sizable return on investment. Another point to remember is that producers should never cut costs with their breeding program. The most important factor is to get a live calf on the ground. With today’s calf prices, breeding costs represent a very low percentage relative to the total value of the calf produced. The company also performs many flushes with sexed semen. A usual flush with sexed semen will utilize 4 units of the 5 million dose straws. Galen Fink of Fink Beef Genetics in Randolph Kansas was quoted as saying “We recently flushed several of our cows with sexed semen in 2010 and got as good, if not better results than we did with a our conventional flushes”. The future definitely looks interesting for Sexing Technologies. Good management as well as strong promotion and education are key for expansion into our changing beef industry. More than anything, ST must make sure that the fundamentals of using sexed semen are proven through sound economics as well as successful real world scenarios. With this technology available, cattle producers can now decide if sexed semen is an instrument that can help them achieve the goals they have set for their operations. Hopefully, this technology just might be the tool they need to help them get there.

World Champ gets World Class Care

Circled areas represent where Bushwacker had bone chips that had to be removed.

y now, most everyone knows Bushwacker has been to Elgin Veterinary Hospital for a lameness issue in his right hind limb. Kent Cox called on Monday before Christmas and said that the world champion had come up lame at his place. I knew we needed to take a look at him as soon as possible; the only problem was I had taken my son Jake to Nebraska to do a little bird hunting with the Ravenscrofts. I spoke with Kent and told him in this digital age I could still look at him even though I was out of town and he hauled him to Elgin the next day. My associate, Dr. Jared Hansleman, received Bushwacker on Tuesday afternoon and worked his lameness up by doing a physical exam and watching the bull move at a walk and a trot. Next the bull was placed on the hydraulic tilt table, restrained with belting and leg ropes, and laid over on his side. The lower leg was more closely examined and mild effusion (swelling) was found in the fetlock (ankle). At this time the lower limb was radiographed (x-rayed) which revealed small bone chip fragments in the front portion of the fetlock joint.

54

The American Bucking Bull q Jan/Feb 2012

After consultation, it was decided that a local anesthetic should be injected into the fetlock to determine if the bone fragments were the source of Bushwacker’s pain. This was accomplished and a radiographic study of both hocks was completed before he was removed from the table. Evaluation was further performed in an exam alley to determine the extent of pain relief from the injected anesthetic. This portion of the exam proved positive as Bushwacker went sound after the anesthetic was allowed to take effect. Dr. Hansleman transmitted the radiographs, pictures and results of his examination to me. I concurred with his diagnosis and discussed the results of his examination with both Kent and Julio Moreno, co-owner of Bushwacker. Options were given as to how we might deal with the problems Bushwacker was experiencing and it was thought best that the chips be removed from the fetlock surgically. It was also decided that if we could accomplish this with an artroscope, we would remove the chips present in both fetlocks. Christmas was just a couple of days away by the time our workup

was completed and it was thought better to wait to schedule surgery for the following week in order that all our staff would be present when the surgery was performed.

Surgery Day On Tuesday, December 27, Bushwacker was scheduled for surgery at our large animal surgical facility in Elgin. Preparations were made and discussions with his insurer were completed in order to be sure that everyone was aware of the procedure. Dr. Chad Baumwart and Dr. Christie Underwood were asked to assist in completing the surgical team and to perform the procedures needed to remove the bone fragments that were causing the discomfort that Bushwacker experienced. Dr. Baumwart is a new addition to our staff and is a board certified surgeon completing his work at Oklahoma State University. This surgery requires general anesthesia to be administered so pre-operative blood work was ordered to insure Bushwacker’s organ systems were functioning normally. Aberrations occurring in normal internal organ function can increase risks of complications occurring during anesthetic induction and the procedure. Bushwacker was prepared for surgery in the morning by giving him a mild sedative and placing an indwelling intravenous catheter in his jugular vein. He was placed in an induction stall and given an intrave-

Transport into the surgical facility was accomplished by a custom mobile cart and once in the surgical suite monitoring devices were attached to Bushwacker in order that we might monitor blood pressure, heart rate and rhythm, central arterial blood pressure, etc. Both rear limbs were sterile-y prepped and surgical draping applied to insure that

took him back to the main housing area and placed him in his own recovery stall. A drug was given to aid in reversal of the anesthetic and he was placed in a sternal position and the endotracheal tube was removed. Bushwacker was on his feet within 5 minutes of entering the stall. We allowed him to stay there for about 2 hours and then moved him to a regular stall where he was fed. At this time I breathed a collective sigh of relief as the most complicated and challenging part of the procedure was completed. My plans are to continue to keep both fetlocks bandaged and monitor his progress. We will medicate as needed, supplying him with products that hopefully will hasten his recovery and allow him back to his old form. If everything goes well with his recovery and rehabilitation he should be ready to go for The Iron Cowboy event in Arlington, Texas. I am sure there are a number of bull riders that will be thrilled to hear that!

Copious lavage of the joint was accomplished and the procedure was completed by suturing the small puncture wounds created for the scope and access ports. Sterile bandages were placed over both fetlocks and the procedure was completed by removing all the draping. At this time we placed Bushwacker back on our transport cart and

Cowgirl Chick: Sadie Lynn

S

adie Lynn is 19 and from Weatherford, Texas where she has a very incredible and somewhat hectic cowgirl lifestyle. She is the daughter of Trish Lynn, who is the founder of “The All American Cowgirl Chicks,” which is a worldwide prestigious women’s trick riding team. They were started in 1998, and have had a thriving reputation in the rodeo industry ever since. They are one of the most sought out rodeo entertainment acts in the business. They travel all over the country performing for events such as the Rose Bowl and many PRCA events, where they were nominated for “Specialty Act of the Year” in 2010 and 2011. Sadie has been trick riding from the start and she was actually the first Cowgirl Chick to introduce Roman riding into their act. She has a passionate love for horses, and it is shown in her dedication and talent she displays while performing. Not only is she resilient in the rodeo

arena, but also in life. She was diagnosed with a very rare breast cancer at the age of 18, and continues to promote Breast Cancer Awareness and be an inspiration to cowgirls all over this country. Although horses do come first in Sadie’s life, she has always enjoyed bucking bulls as well. Her Dad, Donnie Smith, (Hookin S Bulls of AE Ranch) has raised bucking bulls for over 20 years along with her grandpa, who has always been involved in the ranch and helped with the raising all of their elite livestock. Sadie has always been around bulls, but was not familiar with the ABBI or how she could get involved until she became acquainted with ABBI members: Sandie and Murial Bonsall. They got her interested in the ABBI itself, and more specifically, the junior futurities. Sadie became a member of the ABBI last year and she decided she would partner up with the Bonsalls and enter the ABBI Junior Futurities The American Bucking Bull q Jan/Feb 2012

and some other open futurities as well. She competed this year with her two bulls, Indian Paintbrush and Zumar. Indian Paintbrush even placed in the top 25 for the 2011 junior futurity season earning her a little money! She is now familiar with how some of the ABBI events work and is very interested in having more bulls compete in the near future. Ideally, she would like to have a bull of her own someday qualify for the NFR. Along with keeping her trick riding going, Sadie wants to raise bucking bulls and haul them around to various events. The ABBI is glad to have you as a member Sadie, and hopefully you bring us some buckers in the 2012 season. Keep up the excellent work!
