Every year, I think the American Heritage is even better than the year before-and this year was certainly no exception. But instead of it just being better, I thought that this year our annual event in Ardmore was really taken to the next level. From the hard work of the staff to the enthusiastic response of the fans, I felt an unmatched level of support this year for what we are doing. We had more bulls than ever before, as well as a caliber of competition that is simply unmatched in the industry today. From east, west, north and south, dedicated members made the trek to Oklahoma to be a part of the events that paid out well over $600,000. In the ultimate battle of the 2-year-olds, 918 Bad Wine was crowned king and over $495,000 was paid out. The J&J Supply/Gene Baker/Bob Schaff/Jaynes Gang bull won over $119,000 for his outstanding 4 second performance. There were so many truly great Futurity bulls competing in Ardmore that after watching them, I am more excited than ever before about the Futurity Finals this Fall. There are already so many strong contenders who have qualified, that I have no doubt the Futurity Finals will be one of the highlights of Vegas this year. I was really impressed by our youngest members- these Junior Futurity participants are a great group of kids and it bodes well for the future of our sport to have members like these. A big congratulations to Rex Samford and 920 Bring It On for winning the second junior event of the season. Many of the junior members had their bulls entered in the American Heritage as well and they placed very well and took home some big prize money. We had a Derby again this year, which is always a crowd favorite. Show Sports and Jane Clark’s 603 Cowtown Gangster beat the other 3-year-olds to claim over $32,000, beating out a tough field of competition to take home the biggest piece of the $162,000 plus prize purse. I hope you were able to attend Ardmore and be a part of a weekend that was more than just bucking bulls- it was filled with food, family and fun. The ABBI staff worked hard to make Ardmore a social event and with kick-off parties and the great live music of Moe Bandy, I think it was a big success. I hope to see you in Las Vegas. Once again the South Point Resort & Casino will be our home away from home, as well as the site of our Wild Card and Sale events. I hope to be able to catch up with you there if we didn’t have time to visit in Ardmore and I look forward to working with all our members, fans, sponsors and supporters on making this the best Finals in our history.

Hello all, We did it- we made it through another hot weekend in Ardmore, Okla. What a great event WinStar American Heritage was this year. I want to say thanks to everyone that competed, worked and enjoyed the event. It takes great contractors, bulls and sponsors to make these events work. So, again, thank you. I would like to let everyone know that ABBI is continuing to grow the programs and opportunities we offer. We are excited to introduce a new program that will add an additional level of excitement and fun. ABBI will be hand selecting 100 world-class bucking bulls from the top ranches of the ABBI and PBR. q Holiday State of Mind As we wrap up this issue on the eve of the Fourth of July, it got me thinking about holidays in general and how much better life could be if we had a positive ‘holiday state of mind’ year-round. During the holidays, we come together to spend time with family and friends, embrace each other a little more, speak with more kindness and celebrate what brings us together- rather than focusing on our differences. Notice that I said ‘positive’ earlier, the holidays can also bring out the worst in people. My most vivid Fourth of July memory is one when my little brother and I got those little plastic American flags on sticks. I attached mine to my big wheel handlebar and peddled around the neighborhood proudly. My brother did the same, except he held his flag in his hand. At one point, the poor little guy probably just got tired and put his arm down. The flag dragged on the ground. My patriotic, self-righteous 5-year-old self pitched a fit. I yelled at him that he was a bad American and “revoked” his flag privileges. After I had calmed down, my tearful 3-year-old brother explained that no one had told him he couldn’t let the flag touch the ground. This is a memory that still makes me cringe. I had jumped to conclusions and attacked someone without seeing the big picture or getting their side of the story. My other vivid Fourth of July memory is my dad in tights and a wig. Our town had a big parade to celebrate America’s birthday and my dad was enlisted to play one of the Founding Fathers. I remember being so full of pride that it was my dad in that powdered wig, tricorne (one of those three-cornered hats) and knickers representing America. However, if that had continued into my teenage years I am sure I would have been mortified by it. When I was born, my dad was in the Air Force so I arrived into the world on an airbase in Japan outside of Tokyo. My parents called their families back home, which was a day earlier due to the international date line. This caused some temporary confusion as to what day I was actually born. To explain this to me as a child, my mom told me about the Japanese Birthday Fairy (inspired by the Tooth Fairy I’m guessing). The Japanese Birthday Fairy showed up the day before my birthday (when it was already my birthday in Japan) and left me gifts. My mom still makes me feel unique and special, mailing me gifts from the Japanese Birthday Fairy each year. Growing up my family obviously had some unique traditions. On Thanksgiving, my mother would make each of us whatever food we were most thankful for. When my brother and I were younger, this made for some interesting meals. I recall one Thanksgiving where my dad had steak and potatoes, my brother had baked beans, tacos and Ritz crackers and I had french fries, tater tots and strawberry shortcake. I don’t recall what my mom ate- probably nothing because she was too busy cooking three different meals! The ABBI Finals has literally become a holiday tradition for many members and fans. People will take vacation days from work and bring their whole family to Nevada. Try to approach each ABBI event with a positive holiday attitude- you get to catch up with old friends and spend time with your family. Even a weird relative (or two) usually can be tolerated over the holidays- try to do the same with people you don’t see eye-to-eye with. Reach out, help others and celebrate what you have in common with the people around you. Don’t let a bad apple (or relative) spoil your experience. Rise above, rather than sink down to the level of your detractors and the naysayers. There is something noble in sacrificing your time and effort to bring a smile to someone’s face- even if they are a total stranger. Take the time to explain or help someone who doesn’t understand or is doing something wrong, rather than attacking or criticizing them. And live with the realization that no matter how well you think you know someone, you will never really be able to walk a mile in their cowboy boots- or ride a block on their big wheel- so try not to judge.

Super Stakes Incentive Program Want to increase your bucking stock’s market value? Then you’ll want to be a part of the Super Stakes Program. This new program provides added incentive for Bucking Stock owners who buck their bulls in ABBI Events. The Super Stakes Program pays cash dividends for money earned by nominated bulls at ABBI-approved events. In fact, the Super Stakes Program is the most unique incentive program in the bucking stock industry today. Here are some of the program benefits • Bull calves that are registered in their birth year by December 31 will have the opportunity to enter into the program for only $25/ head • As a bull calf gets nominated the sire and dam also gets nominated provided that both sire and dam are verified. • Super Stakes money is divided and paid annually. Payouts are based on the total number money earned by the bulls at the end of the 2 Year Old Year, 3 Year Old Year and 4 Year Old Year. • A list of nominated calves will be published January through October issues of The American Bucking Bull, Inc. This is an added service to provide potential buyers with the information needed to make informed decisions when buying ABBI registered bulls. • The calf will be listed as a Super Stake Participant in the registry.
Information for Bull and Cow Owners This program highlights not only the calf but the dam and sire as well. This is a great way to increase the value of the sire or dam by enrolling their offspring into the program.
How to Enroll: 2010 Calves can be enrolled until Sept 30, 2011 through online enrollment or filling out a 2010 Super Stakes Enrollment Form and sending it into to the office.
For 2011 Calves it is even easier, enrollment can be done when registering your 2011 calves. There is an option to add it to the registration or if you would like you can send your Super Stakes Enrollment Form into the office.
How is the amount of prize money awarded each year determined? • The $25 /head is split up between sire, dam and calf. As a calf is nominated $15 goes into the calf payout, $5 goes into the dam payout and $5 goes into the sire payout. • 2 Year Old Year - payout is 20% of bull calves nominated in the same birth year • 3 Year Old Year - payout is 30% of bull calves nominated in the same birth year • 4 Year Old Year – payout is 50% of bull calves nominated in the same birth year An ABBI bull has a competition career for three years. Based on that fact, the total money awarded in any year is determined by the amount of bull calf nominations in their birth year and then a percentage will be used for each year of competition. A minimal management fee may be taken out at time of payout.
Payout: Payout will occur every year the bull is competing in an ABBI event at the end of the season. Payout will be based on money won.

In the May/June issue of the American Bucking Bull magazine we missed an important fact when it comes to the original breeder of Box K’s Spring Fling Classic Champ 78 Poker Face. John Fry’s JF Buckers program of Alvord, Texas is responsible for the painted up black and white bull’s existence. In fact Fry still owns both the dam and sire of Poker Face, 701 Rodeo a Chaos son, and JF-01 Little Shiney an Automatic daughter. We recognize how important it is to identify a Classic contenders original breeder and the program from which he stems.
qq q q q q q q q q q q q q q q q q q q q q Reminder: Mikel Moreno Scholarship Deadline Approaching Attention all junior members, applications for the 2011 Mikel Moreno Scholarship Award should be submitted by September 18. The annual award was started by Cindy Rosser and Julio Moreno to honor the memory of their late son, Mikel Moreno. Mikel was a successful bucking bull breeder before losing his battle with leukemia at age 18. “The scholarship was started to help a young person with their goal of going to college, a dream our son wasn’t able to see come true for his own life,” explained Cindy Rosser Moreno. This will be the third year the scholarship has been awarded. Applications are being accepted until September 18. The winner will be announced as part of the ABBI World Finals. The ABBI World Finals is held in conjunction with the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) World Finals. Applicants for the Mikel J. Moreno Scholarship Award need to be high school seniors who will be attending college this fall. Applicants must also have been an ABBI member for a minimum of two years. Applications are available on the ABBI website: www.americanbuckingbull.com. Applications must be accompanied by a letter to the Scholarship Committee detailing the applicants involvement in the bucking bull industry and their future career goals. Applicants should also list the college they plan to attend and their expected course of study. Any additional information applicants would like to submit to help the Committee make their selection is also welcome.
The presentation of the scholarship will be during the ABBI World Finals. Mikel was a native of California and the grandson of the legendary rodeo icon Cotton Rosser. Mikel was instrumental in the success of his parent’s bucking bull breeding programs and helped to produce great PBR bucking bulls like Reindeer Dippin’, Troubadour and Big Mike. Holey Slinger, Mikel’s Kat, Water Patrol and Johnny Ringo were just some of the bulls that came out of Mikel’s own breeding program. The bucking bull bloodlines he helped to develop live on in countless bucking bull programs including Flying U, Flying C and Moreno Livestock. Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Hoxie! Rebecca Marker Walker and Asher Hoxie tied the knot in Stephenville, Texas on June 28. Being dedicated breeders, the two then headed over to buck some bulls at the 4Cs Arena afterward. They did make it to St. Thomas for a honeymoon though the next day!

Steroids in ABBI/PBR Competition Bulls by Susan Bedford
The PBR and ABBI have always been dedicated to the safety and welfare of the animal athletes competing in their events. The respective rule books for each organization bans any and all forms of cheating and both organizations retain the right to test tissue and fluid samples for any reason deemed necessary. The use of anabolic steroids clearly constitutes cheating and the PBR’s Rule Book expressly prohibits the use of these substances. At the Pueblo Built Ford Tough Series event, PBR drew blood samples from 39 randomly selected Classic bulls for testing. Of these, a meaningful amount came back positive. In 2007, the PBR Board of Directors established three Board Advisory Committees: the Rules and Regulations Committee, the Conduct Committee, and Bull Testing Committee. Of these three, it is the Bull Testing committee who is responsible for all policies, rules, testing and disciplinary sanctions related to the use of banned substances in bucking bulls. Following the results of the Pueblo tests, the Bull Testing committee met and decided to impose fines and sanctions on stock contractors whose animals tested positive for steroids. ABBI recognizes that people want to know who was fined and what animals tested positive, however the Testing Committee, under no obligation to disclose this information, elected to keep the identity of offenders and their bulls confidential. Whether you gave your bull a banned substance intentionally or accidentally, or even if someone else did it without your knowledge or permission you are responsible for any bull that carries your brand and/or your name. PBR’s Official Rule Book contains a “Stock Contractor Responsibility Rule” modeled after the same rule used in the horse racing industry. The rule plainly states it is a stock contractor’s sole and exclusive responsibility for any and all substances found in his or her bull. That means you must be vigilant about the people you hire and those you allow to care for your animals, as well as knowing each and every shot, pill or supplement each animal ingests and whether or not it is a banned substance. Unlike the race horse industry, bucking bulls fall under the potential food source category. So even though our animals tend to retire to pastures (not become a hamburger special), the FDA has a list of substances that cannot be in any cattle. Although anabolic steroids aren’t on this list, other things are so this is yet another reason to be hyper-vigilant about the care of your animals. The ABBI and PBR are committed to providing a level and even playing field for everyone in the industry. From here on out, more testing will take place and all animals winning money at ABBI events
should expect to be tested. The ABBI and PBR’s number one priority is to take care of the animals that provide not just entertainment and thrills to millions of fans, but who are the financial cornerstone of our sport. Without bulls there are no bull riding events and arenas will sit empty. Dr. Gary Warner, one of the leading veterinarians in bucking bull care in the world today and a PBR and ABBI adviser explained some common questions and concerns he has heard regarding anabolic steroids in the industry. “Some people think they need to use them if they are hauling their bull a lot, to keep on weight,” Warner explained. “The solution to that is to rest them; anabolics are not the solution.” He went on to explain that people who are using banned substances in their cattle often think they must “wean” the animal off it gradually. Warner also says this is a falsehood. “Just stop using it, You don’t need to reduce the dose slowly.” In human males, anabolics can induce a sense of euphoria- the world is a very bright place. But it can also cause aggression and mood swings. So anabolic steroids may make your bull more aggressive, but that is about it. And I know plenty of cowboys and bullfighters who would argue that isn’t a desirable trait after a buck off. Unlike humans who can train specific muscles in a precise ways in a gym to make them bigger, there is no way to target exact muscles in bulls explained Warner. Warner compared the bucking bull athlete to a gymnast. “You wouldn’t expect Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime to be able to go out and do a flip. Our bulls are athletes. More muscle mass doesn’t equal a better performance, it can just mean less flexibility. Performance is not about the size of muscles.” Anabolic steroids can cause liver damage (in humans and bulls) and affect future reproductive ability as well. With semen commanding such a high-price from good buckers, it just doesn’t make sense to mess with the swimmers. “This isn’t about punishing people,” explained Warner, “this is about making the competition fair and leveling the playing field.” Let’s all work together to move beyond this incident and make sure every animal is competing fairly and safely- and without banned substances.

The Scherotter family, originally from Southern California, moved to Oklahoma in 2006 to grow and become more involved in the bucking bull business. Their ranch in Ada is known as ‘Cal-Okie Ranch: Home of D&A Bucking Bulls.’ David and April became ABBI members in 2007. Their son Clay (12) became a member in 2010. Catrina, (15) hasn’t quite decided if the bucking bull industry is her “thing” yet or not. She will have a chance to become a member next year because her Dad has a few bulls as prospects for her. Clay on the other hand thinks he was made to ride, flank and own bulls. At the age of 12 the young cowboy already has some of his own bulls and breeding cows. Cody Whitney had a few heifers one year that Clay saw buck and he instantly found one he wanted to purchase, the named Buckey. Cody priced him at a $,000 and Clay took it. That was the beginning of it all for him and his bull business. Clay, at the age of 4 was named the National Reserve Mutton Busting NJBRA Champion (National Junior Bull Riding Association). After taking that title, he has been hooked. His parents would take him up to Northern California for the NJBRA events because there were no events held in Southern California. The shortest trips were usually around 8 hours, and as long as 12 hours. Clay continued to compete in the NJBRA and has not missed a year other than 2008, where he didn’t qualify by a point and a half. Although not being able to compete, Clay still went and helped out with the rodeo, and was there to watch and cheer on all of his friends; needless to say, he is a very good sport. The whole family was dedicated and knew that that wanted to raise their kids somewhere that made rodeoing a little easier, so they moved out to the great state of Oklahoma.

Catrina and Clay Scherotter
In 2007 they decided to become official members of the industry and decided they really wanted to be involved with bulls in the ABBI. They bought their first couple of cow/calf pairs and it took off from there. David knew he wanted his kids to get involved with the junior Futurities, so in 2009 he bought Clay a calf that he would be able to compete in the 2010 youth futurities with. It was a good move because Clay ended up in the top 10 overall for the 2010 season. He hopes to do as well this year because he wants to qualify for Vegas. This year Clay has a couple calves, but they aren’t quite performing to the level he wishes. David said no matter how good or bad his bull does, his attitude never changes. Clay stays optimistic and hopes for a check the next time. What keeps him so involved is getting the chance to have his own set of bulls. Although he wants to be a bull rider, another dream he has is to own his own herd and at the age of 12 he has already got a jump start on it. Next year Clay will be competing with bulls that are owned by only him, his own personal pen of bulls. He is most looking forward to seeing how good his own bulls are, and also to see if he made good choices when purchasing his particular calves. Clay just isn’t a cowboy or stock contractor, he is also an athlete. In his spare time away from the bucking chutes, Clay enjoys playing baseball and loves to fish. His sister Catrina does a lot of charity work in her community and is very involved in Drama and the Agricultural program. By being involved in Ag classes she is becoming more familiar with bulls and cows and is gradually getting more interested in the bull business and might have one entered next season. W
hen some people go to Vegas, they always bet on black. Others, always on red. When the ABBI rolls into town in October, I bet there will be just as many people putting their money on white, grey and brindle. With over $800,000 at stake, breeders from coast to coast will be coming to Nevada to compete in what will be the biggest ABBI Finals events to date. With a Wild Card Classic, Maturity, Junior Futurity, Classic Finals, Futurity Finals and an ABBI Sale- it will be a week packed with action and excitement. There will also be educational seminars, a Texas Hold Em Tournament, vendor booths at South Point and an ABBI Awards Banquet. Add on top of that all of the PBR activities and you have the best week on the planet for anyone involved in the bucking bull business. If the

fourth of July weekend is Cowboy Christmas, then Oct 24-30 is Bullapalooza (which is like all your favorite holidays rolled into one)! If you have bulls competing, all bulls will need to be checked in at South Point on Saturday, October 22. Both ABBI and PBR bulls are being housed at the South Point this year, making it as convenient as possible for contractors to feed, water and care for their animals.There will be an ABBI breeders meeting following the check-in, also at South Point. Unlike past years where there was a qualifying (or long round) for the Futurity Finals, the Board listened to members’ ideas and concerns and set up a system where Futurity bulls can qualify throughout the year at ABBI events (see the list in this issue of which bulls are already headed to Sin City). The Wild Card will kick things off on October 24 at the South Point Arena, giving 3 and 4-year-old buckers a last-chance opportunity to qualify to compete at the Classic Finals (Oct. 26 and 29).

As in past years, Classic bulls qualify for Las Vegas based on the money they have won throughout the season. The only other way to make it to the big show and a shot at the $250,000 first-place prize is through the Wild Card. The Classic Finals will once again be held in conjunction with the PBR at Thomas & Mack Arenagiving the best young bulls the opportunity to face the best bull riders in the world. Last year’s ABBI Champion Bushwacker wasn’t just a contender to take the Classic Crown, he also was in the running for PBR World Champion Bull (also known as Bull of the Year). His Classic win earned Flying U Rodeo/Cotton Rosser/Julio Moreno & Cindy Rosser the ABBI Breeder of the Year title. As you’ve noticed if you’ve watched any PBR Built Ford Tough Series events live or in person this year, Bushwacker will once again be on the short list to be the top bull of the PBR. The Classic race is always a nail-biter. You never know who
will pull off the win until the second round of competition ( a nerve-wracking three days after round one). This year the money leaders at this stage of the game are 789 Bad Blake (Lightning C) with $24,149, U7042 Pure Smoke (Ohl/Beshears/K Bar C) with $18,250, 703 Ranger Pride (Let’R Buck-Long Ranch) with $17,900, 78 Poker Face (Box K Cattle, LLC) with $16,706 and V-5 (Wilson and Foutch) with $14,841. I might bet on the regular season year-end champion (which is based on money) at this point, but I wouldn’t wager a penny on who will be the next King of the Classics. There is just so much talent this year that it’s too close to call- not to mention that we don’t know what unknown talent might explode out of the Wild Card yet. Wednesday, October 26, will be the big day for our youngest bulls and members. Both the Junior Futurity and Futurity Finals will take place at South Point. It has been a dynamic year for our 9-18 year old competitive youth members. With only one more

011 2 s a g e Las V regular season Junior Futurity slated to take place before Vegas, Aaron Halpain (6322 Wild Willie) is sitting two points and just over $1,300 ahead of Rex Samford (920 Bring It On). Tied for third are two bulls from the King kids (Kaleb and Karis), Box K09 and 38 Butter Bean. Since the slate is wiped clean once the Futurity bulls qualify, it literally is anyone’s game. Odds are looking good in the Futurity Finals for Bad Wine to finish near the top. He’s won the American Heritage as well as several other ABBI Futurity events, but any bull that makes it to Vegas has a shot at $100,000...and with three months between now and Finals, there may be future Futurity stars we haven’t even seen in the arena yet. Bad Wine has won over $147,000 so far this season, followed by American Heritage Reserve Champions D&H/Haines’ 61W Fire Show and Hariman’s 95 Here We Go Again with over $55,000 apiece. Last year it was Ragin JT (Jerry Tuttle and the Jaynes Gang) who beat out the competition to take first. His victory also earned retired PBR superstar Mike White the prestigious Horizon Breeder of the Year award. In the Futurity points race (which determines the regular season year-end champion), Bad Wine is also sitting in first with a 100 point lead at press time over Paul Daniel / Curtis Leschyshyn 924 Blue By U. Around 75 points behind the Blue are 59W Fat Bot-
tom (D&H), 6322 Wild Willie (Halpain-JATT) and 458 Utha Side (Boyd-Floyd). After the 2-year-old action, the “seniors” will have a chance to shine at noon with the ABBI Maturity event. Maturity events were just introduced by the ABBI this year and give registered bulls a place to buck competitively against each other after they have aged out of the Classic system. On Thursday, October 27 at 11am the ABBI Award Banquet Brunch will take place, followed by the ABBI Sale. Both events will be at the South Point’s Grand Ballroom (Rooms A & B). Stay tuned to the ABBI website and newsletter for more information. Whether you bet in the arena or at the table, the South Point Resort & Casino is the perfect home for the ABBI and all of the related events. The distinct big bar in the center of the casino is where you can often find folks after most of the evening events. It is the equivalent to the office water cooler—where you can catch up with your fellow breeders and catch up on the latest industry news. Not just an opportunity to buck, buy or get involved in the bull business, this week in October is a chance to reconnect with family and friends and immerse yourself in the rich western culture and heritage of our industry. The Industry’s New Gold Standard: From Fan to Stock Contractor

ur industry has always been about being inclusive, and one way to do that is to allow everyone the opportunity to become a stock contractor. In the past that took time, experience and a ranch. Now the ABBI is opening up the exciting world of bucking bulls ownership to everyone who is passionate about the sport. ABBI is proud to unveil The Gold Standard Program. This unique program will allow fans to get involved in the industry immediately. There will be 100 yearling bulls in this inaugural year and $500,000 in prize money. Bulls will be purchased this year in Las Vegas and can be competing in futurities in just six months from now. We realize we aren’t the first to offer this experience- people from celebrities to housewives have been partnering on bulls or buying animals and allowing other people to house, train and haul them for years. But we are the first to offer completely first-class, turn-key bucking bull ownership.

You own the bull you buy. And most importantly, you purchase the bull you want from our pre-selected yearlings. You aren’t just buying genetics or the hope a cow may have a bull calf you can compete with someday. “Our concern was doing this right, not doing it first,” explained ABBI VP Kaycee Simpson. “We wanted to offer people bulls that we knew had real potential from the start. That is why we are going to the ranches of the top stock contractors of the ABBI and PBR and preselecting yearlings.” 100 bulls are in the process of being selected for the 2012 program. They will then be transported to a facility where all of the Gold Standard bulls will be housed and cared for. “We really wanted the playing field to be as level as possible,” said Simpson. “You can do that by eliminating as many variables as possible. These bulls will all get top-notch care, food and housing-but it will also be consistent among each animal.” Besides the day-to-day bull raising tasks, the bulls will also be profes-

sionally transported to all events and flanked. The ABBI will also help you protect your investment by insuring your animal for up to $7,500, with additional insurance being available. The bulls will compete against each other at four Gold Standard season events. These events will be held at select Built Ford Tough Series tour stops, giving owners from coast-tocoast a chance to come watch their bulls buck at some the country’s biggest and best arenas. The Gold Standard Finals will be held in Las Vegas in conjunction with the PBR and ABBI Finals in 2012. The first step in this unique opportunity is to purchase a spot for The Gold Standard auction in Las Vegas. This cost is $3,500 but that is credited toward your Las Vegas draft position bid (minimum bid $4,500). At the 2011 Las Vegas Finals you will then bid on a position in the draft to select your bull. Videos and information on each yearling will be available well in advance of the draft. You may then sell or trade your draft position with other Gold Standard
contractors in the hours prior to the last stepthe live Las Vegas draft to select your animal. The ABBI draft will be reminiscent of what the NBA and NFL do, with professional coverage and media in attendance. They’ve taken real passion, added real people, and have succeeded at assembling a real set of bovines. Although their program’s start was meek and mild, 11 years later it’s one of the deepest and most respected programs in the game.

Melton’s experience and knowledge were instrumental in crafting the Circle T Ranch into a top-drawer program and, before long, the program was feeding numerous heavy-hitting bovines into PBR events around the country. The program has injected a slew of solid bovines into the Built Ford Tough Series, and

The Talley’s established the Circle T Ranch in 2000. Neither Howard nor Shirley had a rodeo or bull riding background, but they ran a commercial cow herd. The couple had recently sold out of their commercial cattle when they decided to take a walk on the wild side. Before long they found themselves striving to raise and haul the best bucking bulls they could get their hands on. “We’d always had horses and commercial cows,” shared Howard. “At one time we ran

The first of two goals was to assemble one of the deepest bull-pens in the bull contracting business, which also opened the door for an aggressive and compelling pursuit of this year’s coveted PBR Stock Contractor of the Year title. The couple has gone the extra mile to not only fill Circle T’s bull roster with bovine brawn, but also to assemble a team of supersavvy people to fuel the fire. The Circle T rally of experienced handlers started with Gene Melton in 2000. Melton has tethered his 40-plus years of rodeo, bull

When the industry and stock experience of Gene and Rex are combined with the rider insight from Cory, and that is added to the Talley’s willingness to do whatever it takes to have a world-class program, it appears Circle T may have them surrounded in this year’s title race. “Gene has been key in making Circle T what it is today. When I was the president of the Louisiana Rodeo Cowboys Association I had to have somebody to help me and I found Gene through his long background in rodeo,” shared Howard. “Later he came to work for me and it’s just really been a blessing having him stay on with us. He’s good at his business and Cory has been a great addition because he knows what

type of bulls the riders want to get on. He can view bulls we have or that we may be interested in from a rider’s perspective and that certainly is a very important part of the Contractor of the Year equation. Then adding Rex has also been really, really great and at home having Cooter (Clyde LeGrand) who does a lot around here in the way of tending to everyday stuff.” When asked about his role in the Circle T push toward a shot at the title, Cory is candid about the role riders play in accomplishing such a feat. “First off, it helps because I’ve been around bull riding and on the PBR tour,” explained Cory, “and I know what caliber bull it takes. I have an eye for bulls and know how to bring them together and I know which ones are going to work and which won’t. A lot of contractors didn’t ride bulls and they don’t have that connection with the riders. Being a rider myself makes that connection easier. “When you are one of the guys and you have more of a personal relationship with them, and can see it from their perspective, it’s really helpful. The guys respect me and know that I understand. They can relate to me and I can relate to them a lot better than some of the contractors and even my own dad can. But the riders know when Circle T brings bulls they are bulls they can ride, and ride for anywhere from 88 to 90 points.” Cory continued, “When you look at past drafts, our bulls are always the first ones to go. We’ve worked hard to put together a set of bulls that guys want to get on and it shows. It doesn’t do any good to have a rank bull or eliminator that nobody wants to get on. We try to get the rankest ones we can, but at first we went after rider-friendly bulls. What we found there is you don’t get the respect from good spinners, you get that from rank bulls a guy might or might not ride.” Cory not only believes in what they are doing at the Circle T Ranch, but he believes in Howard and wants people to understand his level of dedication.

“Circle T owns every single bull on the ranch. We don’t have partners getting together to buy these high powered bulls. And that’s another reason I think these bulls are so special- because one man owns them all, which makes it twice as hard to put them together. If a bull doesn’t work, it’s one man’s loss and most aren’t willing to take that risk. For me, this shows the level of dedication Howard has.” Besides dedication, Talley is a real workhorse according to those around him like Cory. “A few years ago after suffering a heart attack Howard was in the hospital overnight and was instructed to do no physical activity for at least six weeks by the doctors. He was too busy to take off work that long from an oilfield location and was determined to get back to work. He left with the doctors following him telling him he couldn’t do that. He went right back to work. Now that’s keepin’ it real!” Although Circle T seems to have mas-

We’re hoping when we come back after the break and for the second part of the season you’ll see a lot more of our bulls in the short round.” Circle T may seem all about bulls but they started with females. At one time they had between 60 and 70 head of bucking bred females. However as they have transitioned and focused on top-level bulls and a legit run at PBR Contractor of the Year, they’ve realized how diffi-
cult it is to bred and raise such elite bovines. “We’ve decided to sell most of them. There are so many people out there with established programs and they are so good at what they do. They have such deep female programs and many of them enjoy raising them and don’t want to haul them,” explained Howard. “So, for us it’s actually more cost effective to just go and buy the kind of bulls we want instead of trying to raise them. We have around 100 bulls
and around 35-40 are upper-class bulls that we think are Built Ford Tough caliber. Then we have about another 70 or so we’ve raised ourselves that are yearlings, 2 and 3-year-olds.” One thing is for certain, Howard has done a lot for the ABBI breeder-especially those focused on deep female programs. He has always been willing to pay top-dollar for top-drawer buckers. And in an industry where it’s difficult to “keep it real,” Circle T has been good for the bull business and good for the breeder turning out big-time bovines. “To sum it up Howard’s a guy that doesn’t spare any expense at doing it the best he can,” said Cory in closing. “He has put a lot of effort into doing it better than anybody else and there’s no getting around the fact that it’s showing. Preparing Cattle for Summer Performance
N
ow that we are at the start of one of the hottest summers on record, I thought it opportune to discuss a little about avoiding heat stress in cattle and some of the situations that may augment environmental stresses. The bovine is an interesting beast when it comes to dealing with excessive environmental stresses, and heat is probably the one stressor that cattle are least adapted to deal with. Elevated temperatures have an impact, but probably just as critical are the relative humidity as well as wind speed. We will consider these variables as we discuss impacts to customary handling procedures on body heat retention in cattle.
Heat Retention and Elimination Cattle produce heat during the process of digestion. Many times we have discussed that the rumen is a large fermentation vat and that an enormous amount of heat is produced during the digestive process. This heat production is magnified when cattle are on a high concentrate diet; therefore, if we have cattle performing during the heat of summer it is advantageous for them to be on a diet that is higher in fiber (forages) than on concentrates which are high in grain and protein products. There are several feed additives available on the market that research has proven to aid in lowering the body temperature in the bovine. Water
is another important aid in helping to keep the animal cool and a source should be readily available that is both clean and cool. A black tub sitting out in the sunshine for several hours probably will not be a source for a cool drink for a bull looking to cool himself down. Cattle with significant Brahman influence have sweat glands in their skin that allow them to dissipate some body heat. Also, these cattle have a tendency to be shorter haired allowing them to be less likely to retain body heat. Those cattle with little Brahman influence should be monitored closely for signs of heat stress and those with a significant hair coat should have most of the excess hair removed from their body, particularly the neck and belly hair. Most of the body heat is dissipated in cattle of British and Exotic breeding through the respiratory system and to a lesser extent, through urination.

Many different factors play a part in the development of heat stress. Body color, believe it or not, can significantly impact body heat accumulation and elimination. Obviously, if a black bull and a white bull are exposed to the sun with a 90 degree temperature, the black bull will develop heat stress much quicker. Therefore, shade or the lack of it can be a very important factor to consider when housing bulls where environmental conditions are excessive. Water and the desire to make it satisfying in order for the bull to consume it has already been mentioned. Airflow across the body of the animal is also an important consideration. Some trailer designs currently on the market may impede airflow to animals loaded closely together and cause an accumulation of body heat over a period of time when being transported. To prevent this, airflow design should be evaluated and as environmental temperatures increase, cattle should be

If airflow (wind) is restricted due to buildings or vegetation, consideration should be given to providing better air distribution and cooling for cattle.

Learning to recognize the various signs of heat stress in your herd is very important.
There are several signs that signal a bull is becoming heat stressed. The first evidence of heat stress occurs with an increase in respiratory rate. Instead of a bull with a normal respiratory rate of say 20 breaths per minute, he might be breathing at a rate of 40 per minute. Urination will become more frequent and if water is available he may be standing at the trough and drinking excessively. As heat stress continues to progress, the bull may start to open their mouth while breathing and an increase

Bucking Bull Stress and Nutrition Everyone knows what stress is. It’s that overwhelming sense you get when everything is pulling at you all at once. Maybe it’s the fact that you have too much to do and not enough time to do it. Stress can make people feel a lot of different ways.
But what is stress to an animal, and how does it affect his performance? To a bucking bull, many things in his life are stressful. The fact that things are always changing in his environment like different pens, different pen mates and different water is an obvious source of stress. However, did you ever stop and consider that there are biological effects of stress on your bull that are caused by him simply living his life? I would like to describe for you the ways that stress affects a bull’s body and the nutritional solutions you can provide for him to allow him to perform his best.
Psychological Stress There are two kinds of stress that your bull faces. The first I will call psychological stress. This is the kind that I described above and it is the one that everyone understands. When a bull undergoes psychological stress, it can result in loss of appetite, poor health, poor exercise performance, and weight loss or “shrink”. In my experience with highstressed, long-haul feeder cattle, there can be up to 12% of body weight lost due to shrink from hauling cattle. It is more typical to have 4 to 5% shrink in any given episode of stress. If not properly managed, it may require weeks for the animal to recover the weight lost. What is the biological cost of this stress and how does it work? All animals have the ability to make the stress hormone cortisol and it is released whenever a strange situation occurs in the animal’s life. The most important thing to realize about cortisol is that it increases the output of minerals in the urine of animals. All of these minerals are very important for health. Electrolytes are the minerals that the body needs

to maintain proper electrical charge in its cells. Examples of electrolytes include sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride. When an animal becomes dehydrated and loses electrolytes, it has reduced its capacity to function properly. There are many brands of electrolyte packs available for use in case of an emergency and I would recommend using one in a situation where an animal has gone off feed for an extended period. Other trace minerals are required in smaller amounts but they are no less important. Zinc has over 200 different functions in the body and these functions include building muscle, repairing tissue, and fighting disease. Copper is critical for good energy metabolism; it is impossible to turn feed into energy without it. It is important to use the best available sources of copper and zinc. Several brands of these minerals are available in the protected form and they are more bio-available meaning they are used in a more effective manner. I recommend checking to make sure your feed tag lists the “complex” or “chelate” form of zinc and copper to ensure the best supply of these nutrients.

Bucking Bull Stress and Nutrition cont. Hauling and new environments are types of stress.
Another mineral that is relatively new as a nutrition tool is chromium. Maintenance of normal blood sugar and insulin metabolism in cattle is essential for good health and performance. Supplementing chromium improves glucose transport into cells by increasing the sensitivity of cells to insulin. The only form of chromium that is legal for feeding to cattle is chromium propionate. Ask your feed supplier if chromium is right for your program.
Oxidative Stress The second form of stress is known as oxidative stress. The name implies that there is a problem with the balance of oxygen in the body and that is correct. When the body encounters anything foreign, either from the respiratory or digestive tract, the immune system does everything it can to fight it. The white blood cells release hydrogen peroxide as a way to attack the foreign object. The consequence of this attack is the production of free radical oxygen, which can damage the body’s cells. Antioxidant vitamins are a way that the body neutralizes free radical oxygen. Examples of anti-oxidants include the mineral selenium and vitamins C and E. Most feed contains supplemental vitamin E because it has been demonstrated over time that cattle require it. Under normal situations, cattle do not need vitamin C in their feed because the liver

produces enough of this anti-oxidant to neutralize free radicals. However, normal production of vitamin C occurs only when the animal has been eating well and is not under stress; when the cattle are under extreme stress feeding supplemental vitamin C has been shown to be effective. Vitamin C is synthesized in the liver from a stored form of sugar called glycogen. The amount of glycogen that is stored is very small. It is meant to be used for short bursts of energy such as bucking for 8 seconds. If a bull has not eaten properly for several days, there may not be enough glycogen available for both the synthesis of vitamin C and for quick energy. In this case, feeding supplemental vitamin C spares the body’s requirements for making it and leaves the glycogen for quick energy.

qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq q The problem with feeding supplemental vitamin C to cattle is that it may be destroyed in the rumen before it has a chance to be absorbed and utilized. Vitamin C is a modified sugar molecule and as such it can be fermented by rumen bacteria just like the sugar in corn. There are several companies which sell rumen-bypass forms of vitamin C. These forms Noise and people can cause additional stress to bucking bulls.
will not be digested in the rumen and will be absorbed in the intestine. Research demonstrates that feeding rumen-bypass vitamin C increases the level that circulates in the blood. The result for high-stressed feeder cattle has been improved health and appetite, reduced medical costs, and lower death loss. I recommend feeding rumen-bypass vitamin C in times of stress and immediately before and after exercise at the rate of 1 gram per hundred pounds of body weight. The bottom line is that stress happens to bulls and nutrition can help. Feeding electrolytes, protected forms of trace minerals, and rumen-bypass vitamin C will help your bull perform as the elite athlete he is meant to be. 22 Miss All Star The importance and role of elite females is more prevalent than ever. The value of these upper-tier females has held steady and even risen. When an elite female demands a similar price as her elite male performing offspring—the market seems to be in proper balance according to many. While the horse industry and icons of our industry have known for decades that a dam’s influence on the caliber of her offspring is monumental, the idea has taken longer to be accepted by the masses. A female’s worth stems from her ability to produce elite performing bucking bulls as well as daughters that go on to produce top-performing sons. In addition as a female ages, if she is indeed
an elite producing female, even her great-grandson’s and greatgrand-daughter’s production ability may be traced back to her ability to produce. Establishing a decorated production record takes time. Unfortunately by the time a female has produced more than one bonafide bucker she is well into her limited life of productivity. Worse yet, if she has produced daughters, by the time those daughters produce sons of competition age an elite female is well beyond her prime. Technologies such as flushing and IVF are playing an important role in alleviating the loss of a limited amount of reproductive years in these aged elite females, and ultimately helping them maintain their monetary value.

he story of 22 Miss All Star is one as deeply rooted in the bucking bull industry’s foundation as any. Her elite production story’s full impact is also just now being realized after several generations of her offspring have been injected into the industry. Still her story is one that has been being written even long before her. The black scurred-horned cow raised by Ronnie Roach herself stems from an elite female line. In fact her mother 20 Broken Horn was one of the first calves out of possibly the most famous of all bucking bred females in history, CP1 Kung Fu. Our focus on 22 Miss All Star picks up two generations into CP1’s production history when Jay Weddle and Donny Gowin of Superior Genetics went to Roach for his breeding expertise and historical genetics. The duo had purchased some White Sports Coat semen and were in search of an elite female to flush to with it. “The way it all came about,” explained Weddle, “was I had called Ronnie Roach and told him about the purchase of the semen. I let him know that I wanted to purchase a cow that would produce the best bulls and heifers I could possibly get. Ronnie said he would look over his cows and try to pick something

Ronnie called me back a few days later and said that he had picked out two cows. I asked him which cows they were and he told me it was the 20 cow, or her daughter, the 22 cow. I knew that the 20 cow was one of the original Plummer cows

that Ronnie had purchased, and I figured they were both a little older than what I was looking to buy.” Although these two cow’s ages were in question with Weddle, he and Gowin headed to Cache, Oklahoma a few days later on a quest for female factor. “Donny had just started buying a cow or two at the time and was starting to get the fever, so I asked him to come along. Not long after, we went to Ronnie’s and spent haft of a day looking at the best Plummer cows in the country. He showed us the 22 cow and told us this was the cow he had picked out for the White Sports Coat semen. She was just a black scurred-horned cow, nothing too special looking. I didn’t really know if this was what I was looking for.” Roach appeared to read Weddle’s thoughts. In fact aside from bucking bred cattle, people were something else the industry icon seemed to be an expert on and addressed the moment by simply saying, “She may not look like much, but all of her daughters produce and all of her sons buck.” Still unsure, Weddle continued in his contemplation. “Even though he had talked her up so much, I really couldn’t decide if the cow was

the right cow for me. While I was talking to Ronnie again later, he told me a little more about the bulls she had produced and the bulls her daughters had produced.” With that, Weddle and Gowin decided to follow Roach’s advice and breeding recommendations. They made their purchase of the younger 22 cow and returned two weeks later to pick her up. At the time of her purchase 22 was already bred to PBR-caliber Rooster son, Rooster’s Follie. Little is known about the 22 cow’s sire other than he was an unknown Charlie Plummer bull. To further emphasize the impact of female factor and how it is perpetuated in time, 22’s dam 20 Broken Horn is also the dam of a bull named Rodeo who is sired by Chaos. Fast forwarding to today’s current genetic climate
K Cattle’s 3-year-old Classic contender Poker Face won the 2011 Spring Fling Derby and shows much promise against bulls a year his senior for this year’s Classic race. Weddle and Gowin attempted a flush of 22 to a lesser known sire first, did not have the type of success they were after and eventually decided against using the White Sports Coat semen. Still the duo did manage to have some success with 22’s offspring including that of a daughter sired by Peppermint Twist. This
daughter known simply as 627 produced ABBI competitor Pants On The Ground after the heifer’s first mating. This pairing with White Squall, a White Sports Coat son, is demonstrative of a continued pattern of successful female factor. “Obviously, we have high hopes for this bull since he is by a White Sports Coat son.” 22 was eventually purchased by “Texas” Ted Keeling of All Star Ranch. Keeling provided the cow with more than a number, giving her the official handle of 22 Miss All Star a name truly fitting of her production abilities. “It is hard to let go of great producing cows, but sometimes the age of the cow and the money line up. Even though we did not get too much out of her, the 22 cow was an exceptional producer.” 22 Miss All Star is indeed exceptional when it comes to producing both females and bulls. She is the dam of Shippy’s 007 Secret Agent who has sired many good bulls, 133 Stitch a son of 49 Tequilla and the sire of 708 Gnash, Coat 45 a Chaos son that has been called a rising super-sire after producing a string of futurity winners including 2011 ABBI American Heritage Futurity reserve co-champ Here We

q When it comes to looking in the rear view mirror at buckers that were bonafide, 15 Playboy Skoal is surely a standout. A rank bull who enjoyed a star-studded career littered with unsuccessful attempts by some of the best riders of all time, Playboy Skoal would later also prove to be a one of a kind sire.
The chromed-out black, bald-faced bovine with blanched white stockings did more than simply look striking standing in the back pens. His leap and drop when combined with big-kick was unmatched during his career and nobody was more aware of his power than the riders who attempted to straddle him. Someone who can testify to Playboy’s prowess is retired pro bull rider and accomplished bull handler Kent Cox. His perspective on this decorated bovine crosses the boundary between contractor and rider, shedding light on both sides of the bull riding equation. “I had seen him a bunch and always wanted to get on him. I had him at Garden City (Kansas) and I guess what struck me most that day was his size,” recalled Cox. “I was expecting him to be a lot bigger than he was- I guess because of the way he bucked. He didn’t buck like a little bull. But he actually roped up really small and that really surprised me.” This ‘94 Garden City out was the only time Cox drew Playboy during his bull riding career. Even though Cox knew he could win if he rode, the attempt was unsuccessful. Still, the opportunity provided additional insight on
Playboy from a breeder and bull handler’s perspective. “He was a great bull and still even today would be. Actually he’d probably even be better today because guys take a lot better care of them now than they used to. David (Bailey) really bucked and used them. He wasn’t afraid to stick them on the road. Playboy was definitely a road warrior and he bucked for a longtime.” When it comes to Playboy’s offspring Cox adds an interesting footnote. “He has produced some good bulls but the only son I was able to be around much is Centerfold of Monty’s (Samford). That little bull seems to be getting better and better. Playboy is definitely a producer, but you don’t see many futurity calves out of him, and I think it’s because they have a lot of ear and are later maturing. Guys today give up on them early if they don’t buck right away and, since his calves seem to be later maturing, they may be giving up on them too early.” Whether Playboy is viewed from the perspective of a rider, a breeder or a bull handler, he’s a bucker that was tested, hauled hard and remained impressive. His sire production abilities are still materializing and may continue to prove that this Blast from the Past has staying power.

Buckers worthy of Built Ford Tough Series status are constantly on a contractor’s mind. Filling the truck week after week with bonafide buckers is no easy task. The industry is full of good bulls, but it takes more to pique the interest of the industry’s elite bull men. It takes bulls that are “Bonafide Buckers”. A Bonafide Bucker is a consistent performer that does his deal out after
out, year after year. He’s a work-horse and often the result of careful mating between parents cultivated from years of selective breeding. He’s no stranger to a multitude of forums and has a variety of feats to hang his hat on. When it comes to Bonafide Buckers, contractor Jeff Robinson’s spell-invoking super-star Voodoo Child easily conjures up the label as he casts himself into retirement.
There are always a meaty group of standout bulls to consider for this column, but only a select group that have made a career of summoning up a position on the various industry ballets for World Champion Bucking Bull of the Year. +123 Voodoo Child closed the door on a coveted career June 4, in Asheville, N.C. at the RMEF Big Bull Touring Pro event only a stone’s throw away from his home pasture.

+123 Voodoo Child may have been born under a bad moon, but it was no curse. Sired by legendary and historical super-sire 329 Houdini and out of Bob Wilfong cow BW 51, the wicked wonder cast a spell on the industry early. He competed in the ABBI Classic system, qualified for the 2006 ABBI Classic World Finals held during the PBR Finals and quickly captivated PRCA and Built Ford Tough riders, judges and fans. Voodoo’s masterful trickery under rider captured the 2007 and 2008 PRCA Bucking Bull of the Year titles and the 2009 PBR World Champion Bull Reserve title. He’s traveled to Las Vegas 7 times. For five years straight he went to the PBR World Finals and in ’07 and ’08 he also went to the NFR. Five of the times he went to Vegas he was bucked three times over the course of the event and in ‘07 and ’08 he had three outs at both the PBR Finals and the NFR. Impressive sure, but more inspiring is that it was within a two month time frame and under the best riders in the world.

four escaping the bull’s trickery being surely top-end. Justin McBride was the first in ’08 at Tulsa, Oklahoma for 94.50, but it would be nearly two more years before anyone else would succeed. L.J. Jenkins went up against the little power-house five different times succeeding only once aboard the crafty athlete in Glendale, Arizona for 94 points in ’10. J.B. Mauney has faced the horned trickster 4 times, but only threw chicken bones in the bull’s circle once at Greenville, South Carolina for 93.50. Ben Jones has faced and successfully wrestled the wicked beast twice. Of the two rides Jones has made on Voodoo, the highlight was a 91 point ride in New York City last January. It’s difficult to find a Bonafide Bucker with as many final or short round outs as +123 Voodoo Child. Of the bull’s 97 he can claim 50. He also earned a bull marking of 46.00 or more 43 times. In ’09 at the PBR World Finals while contending for Bucking Bull of the Year, Kody Lostroh’s failed attempt earned the black and white spot a career high mark of 47.50 and sealed the bull’s Reserve World Champion title. Voodoo has conjured up a 22.62 average mark and a BFTS average of 45.176 over his career. His paranormal savvy finds him currently ranked third overall on probullstats, sixth in power rank and with a supernatural buck off percentage of 94.85%.
Although the PBR World Champion Bucking Bull title eluded the brazen bovine, he could have just as easily captured it with a slight variant to Kody Lostroh’s attempt on him at the ’09 PBR Finals. “You have to put him on the same level as Chicken on a Chain. He was a two-time PRCA bull of the year, reserve PBR World Champion, and a favorite for a good part of 2009. He could have been a World Champion just as easy as not.” Over his career, the stealthy bull has cast his spell over 97 recorded outs, cursing all but four Robson Palermo attempts to ride Robinson/Beutler/McNeely’s Voodoo riders that attempted to Child during the championship round of the Wichita Built Ford Tough break his spell with the

May 7, 2011 On May 7, just under 100 bulls gathered in Weatherford, Texas to battle it out for their share of $34,000. The Diamond S Earth Shattering Futurity is an annual event that David Simpson and Scott Pickens put their heart and soul into and it shows- first-class talent and a warm show of hospitality for competitors from near and far. “It was a really good event and we were really pleased that so many people came out,” said Pickens. “We had some really great bulls and I have to congratulate Castle Farms and J&J Supply/Gene Baker for coming out on top of a very competitive field.” 458 Castle’s White Kitty and 915 Houla Hoop each scored a 22 at the highly competitive Futurity event. Their high scores netted their owners $7,054 apiece. 44W from D&H/Buck secured third with a 21.75 and in fourth was 924 Blue By U from Paul Daniel/Curtis Leschyshyn with 21.25. Splitting fifth with scores of 21 were 488 Big Time Kat (Ohl/ Barker Bulls) and 947 Hou’s on First (Heath Sparks). The other animals in the top 10 were Black Tie Affair (Gene Baker), Booger Head (Bob Whisnant/The Jaynes Gang) Bad Wine (J&J Supply and Gene Baker) and Patrick (James and Linda Hogue-J&L Ranch). Bad Wine apparently used this as a warm-up event, going on to win several Futurities after his ninth-place finish in Weatherford and claiming the crown at the American Heritage. On May 7, 2011 Jerome and Tiffany Davis played host to the first round of their annual 3D trailer series challenge presented by Neckover Trailers. The event held at their Davis Ranch and Rodeo facility in Archdale, North Carolina drew 28 futurity calf entries and paid out $8,000 in prize money. The event’s Division 1 paid four places, with Teague Bucking Bulls being the big winner of the event and first in the Division 1 bracket. TBB 9599, sired by Whitewater Skoal son TBB AS 120 and out of a Kish’s Sniffler daughter TBB 526, won the event by a margin of 1.75 points after putting up a 21.50 mark which earned the bull $2,480. When his win was harnessed to a second place Division 1 placing by TBB 9440, a
Mudslinger son out of Russell 122 a 13 Rambo daughter, and a second place finish in Division 2 by TBB 9467, Teague Bucking Bulls left the first round of the three series event in the top slot for the race for the award trailer. Division 2 and 3 of the futurity also each paid two places and a total of $1,680. This ABBI event has rapidly become a popular series for east coast breeders who seem to have accepted the 3D format style of payout which has been so popular among team ropers and barrel racers across the nation. As the summer progresses watch for the race to heat up during the next two legs of the event series held on July 30 and September 3 at the same venue.

Pueblo, Colorado is home to both the ABBI and PBR so the annual events there always carry a little extra excitement- similar to a team getting to play a home game in front of their most loyal fans. The ABBI’s Classic bulls were paired up with the Top 40 PBR bull riders in the world during the US Airforce Invitational Built Ford Tough Series event, to the delight of the fans at the packed Colorado State Fair Arena. “We had great bulls, great cowboys and a great crowd,” said Brad Boyd, ABBI President. “We always strive to have the best events possible in every city, but it is extra special to have one like this in the ABBI’s hometown.” It was PBR Canada champion Aaron Roy who faced 703 Ranger Pride from Let ‘R Buck/Long Ranch, and the bull showed why he is a contender to be the next ABBI Champion. Range Pride had Roy off in just three and a half seconds. That performance earned the bull an 89.25 and a check for more than $10,000. The Raspberry Wine son, out of a Houdini daughter, beat out 58T Flyin’ Train (D&H/Haines) by a quarter of a point. Flyin’ Train boasts an equally impressive pedigree, being deep in Page genetics as a Crazy Train son and a Hotel California grandson. 7042 Pure Smoke, who was the 2009 ABBI Futurity Champion, took third with an 88.75 for owners Ohl/Beshears/K Bar C. 789 Bad Blake and 705 Back Bender split the last spot in the top five, with an 88.5.

If bulls could imbibe, 918 Bad Wine would be drunk on his own success by now. The J&J Supply/Gene Baker bull dominated at the ABBI’s hometown event in Pueblo, Colo. He beat out the reserve champions by 1.75 points- a large margin for what has been a season of extraordinary 2-year-old bulls. “Bad Wine is a big, hairy, American winning machine!” declared Gene Baker, quoting the “great” Ricky Bobby. The hairy machine took home over $6,190 for his winning performance. If our bulls were like NASCAR, Bad Wine would be hoof to horn in logos by now.
In second was 6322 Wild Willie from young Aaron Halpain and JATT Bucking Bulls, who won the Junior Futurity event earlier in the day with his performance worth 21.25. He split the reserve slot with 523 Revelation (Larry & Vicki Noffsinger / The Jaynes Gang) and 981 King David (Locke and Prewitt Bucking Bulls). Each bull took $2,678 back to his pen. “It was great to have such an exciting Futurity in our own backyard,” shared ABBI acting manager Kaycee Simpson. “We appreciate everyone who came to Colorado to compete and be a part of our hometown event.”

May 21, 2011 It was a wild event in Pueblo for the ABBI’s youngest members who took part in the ABBI’s Junior Futurity. Kids age 9-18 got up bright and early the morning of May 21 to kick off the Junior season with this talentfueled event. Despite the 8am start, the stands at the Colorado State Fair were full family, friends and fans who came to watch the participants. There were many great 2-year-old buckers entered and the junior members did an outstanding job behind the chutes flanking their bulls. Ultimately it was Aaron Halpain (JATT Bucking Bulls) 6322 Wild Willie who took top honors and won Aaron over $4,000.
The Neon Nights son earned a 21.25, beating out the reserve champions, Box K 09 from Kaleb King (Box K Cattle) and Crack the Latch (another Halpain bull). Reserve was worth $2,581, bringing Aaron’s event total to over $6,700 and a smile from ear-to-ear of the young man who was visibly please with his animals’ performances. Rex Samford’s 920 Bring It On was fourth, followed by another Halpain bull, 910 Preacher’s Kid, belonging to Taylor. Samford also had the sixth place finisher with 922 Hot-N-Heavy. The event paid through fourth place, with 19 entries total.

Decatur Bull Team Bash ABBI Maturity, Decatur, Texas

May 28, 2011 The inaugural ABBI Maturity event was held in Decatur, Texas as part of a weekend full of great bull riding events produced by the legendary Iron Man himself- JW Hart. This event gave ABBI members with older registered bulls a unique, new kind of competition. “We listen to our members and want to give them what they want,” explained ABBI acting manager and VP Kaycee Simpson. “It was clear that people wanted to be able to compete with their animals in the ABBI beyond their Classic eligibility so we decided to introduce Maturity events this season. JW always puts on a great event, so it seemed like a good fit to launch our Maturity division in Decatur.” 37S Red Hot won this first-of-its-kind event. The D&H Cattle Co. bull won $5,378 with an 88.25. The Crossfire Hurricane son beat out 42 other bulls for bragging rights. “He’s a bull that I really thought was going to sneak up on everybody last year at the Wild Card,” said HD Page. “Unfortunately the judges just didn’t see it the same way as me. So with that, having the opportunity to be able to buck him again in a competition and win is a good deal.” “Actually I think the idea of these maturities is a real good concept for several reasons,” elaborated Page. “First of all it gives breeders another opportunity to compete with their bulls outside their normal three years of eligibility. Another thing it does is give those programs with later maturing bulls an opportunity to keep bulls longer and still have somewhere to take them for competition. There are a lot of really good bulls that were that kind (later maturing). It might take them 40 or 50 outs
before they find their spot and really come on. So this might be something guys can keep in the back of their minds now when they’re making decisions with those sort of bulls.” The bull’s co-owner Mr. Harrison’s added, “Red Hot is the best bull that I’ve ever owned a piece of,” said partial owner Phillip Harrison. “I really think he’s just going to continue to get better-hopefully a whole lot better. Last year in both the Wild Card and at Ardmore we just didn’t draw a rider good enough. Sometimes that happens when you have a really good one. I’ve got a lot of little brothers to him running around that I’m pretty excited about.” Ace of Spades/Beach City’s 705 Grey Feathers was the reserve champion with an 87.75, followed a quarter point behind by 4126 Louisiana Purchase from Box K Cattle. 126 Wake Up Call (Boyd/Floyd) and +2/7 Red Man (S Ranch) split fourth with 87.25.

June 2, 2011 In an amazing under-the-gun effort, Reno Rosser and Cindy Rosser put together a very successful ABBI Classic event in Santa Maria, CA on Thursday, June 2. The event coincided with the Elk’s Prorodeo and had 25 ABBI Classic bulls enter. Breeders from California, Washington and Arizona traveled to compete in this new event. “We put this event together in a little less than a month,” said Cindy, “so we were really happy with the turn out that we got. It was nice to see Mossyrock Cattle Company come all the way down from Washington and also Desert Orchid from Arizona. We really appreciated their support.” Reno Rosser acted as event producer and worked overtime to tear down and arranged the chutes and pen. “The arena has always had a side out gate so Reno put out a lot of effort to get everything set up correctly. So the set up is super nice now with a center load and out gate which really improved bull handling.” Legendary announcer and bull pedigree visionary Bob Tallman announced and as could be expected worked double-time at selling the bulls to the crowd. “Bob of course really, really sold everyone on the bulls which was just great. Of course he was able to offer up lots of information on their genetics and what the American Bucking Bull is all about. We had a great scoreboard which displayed all the bull information and scores and also the replay. The committee was really, really impressed and happy about the event so we’d like to make it an annual event if possible with more money added in the future.” Event judges were Bill and Ralph Pacheco, Rocky Steagall and Mike Jones while bull riding event winner was DJ Stoneburner who marked a 79.50 and Ricky Hallam was 78 for second.

2011 American Heritage Futurity ABBI Futurity, Ardmore, Oklahoma

June 10-11, 2011 There is no other ABBI event as prestigious as the annual American Heritage Futurity in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Although the ABBI Futurity and Classic World Championships are monumental, those calves competing in Ardmore each year are ones their breeders have invested in as prospects over a year prior to their appearances here. Breeders often do so with little indication of what each may be capable of. Entries are often nominated based on the performance and pedigree records of their parents and siblings, and a few dummy trips when they are weanlings and yearlings. In some cases, calves may have even been nominated without any dummy trips at all making the nomination process that much more challenging. Through the lengthy nomination and payment process the calves that finish in the money are sometimes bulls that owners and breeders have taken a risky bet on. That bet then hangs in the balance for over a year as these breeders and owners patiently await each year’s American Heritage event. This year’s AHF Champion boasts an owner that is no stranger to winning this event. Gene Baker has won the event two other times, but his 2011 win was just as thrilling and surprising partially based on the nature of the American Heritage process. “All I set out to do for this year was to win the American Heritage. So it’s pretty surreal to have done it. Winning this event is very satisfying. For the last several months we hoped we would win it with our bull Hoola Hoop,” explained Baker, “but Bad Wine has just really come on super strong in the couple events leading up to the American Heritage. He finished ninth at Weatherford, then went to Pueblo the next week and marked a 23 which is the highest score I’ve ever seen a bull have.” Bad Wine’s 22.25 point marking earned him the AHF win and a huge payday of $119,577. “Bad Wine just keeps getting stronger and stronger. There are a lot of calves that buck, but he really, really likes doing it. I think because he likes it so much that’s seems to translate to that wow factor that many of the really good ones sometimes don’t have.” Baker has been partners with J&J Supply on several bulls including Bad Wine, then following the bull’s performance at Pueblo Baker received a call from Exclusive Genetics and the partners decided to put the bull on the block. Bob Schaff purchased into the bovine for $56,000.

“Bob bought him and obviously got his money back in one day, so you know that was a pretty good investment and we couldn’t be happier for him.” Baker’s J&J Supply partner Jim Mattox compared this win to other prestigious nominating events in the horse industry. “I sort of compare this event to the All American in Quarter Horse Racing. Winning it is like winning that event as a running Quarter Horse owner. You have to nominate them and they have other similar rules those nominees have to follow to even have a chance at participating.” Bad Wine’s sire is Houdini and his dam is by Corkscrew which goes back to Automatic. After Bad Wine’s recent success, Baker immediately found himself wondering if he still owned this now big-time producing dam.
“I got to thinking about that last night and I don’t think that I do (still own her). So, somebody else is going to get another big surprise over him winning this event too. Whoever now owns her got a great producing female.” Bad Wine’s win is more than just a check. It is a huge addition to his sire’s already enormous production stats. “Awhile back when you had asked me what Houdini offspring have earned, I had it figured around a million dollars with sons like Black Pearl and Copp Hou. But now I think he is pushing close to around 3 million. You know it’s pretty humbling when you start thinking about all the great calves he’s produced and the amount of money his offspring has won. June 10-11, 2011 Sometimes the best things take time to materialize. That being said the American Heritage Derby is an event that provides breeders the opportunity to participate with 3-year-old bulls that in many cases take some time to come on and mature physically. In the case of this year’s American Heritage Derby Champion 603 Cowtown Gangster, it took most of his 3-years of life to put all his explosive pieces together in a public format. With a genetic heritage that’s been around as long as bucking bull breeding has been the super-impressive, bovine’s hefty out in Ardmore proved patience is truly a virtue. With unmatched wow and explosiveness, the big brindles’ out captured more than the crowd’s attention. Judges marked the Show Sports and Jane Clark bull a 90.50 sealing the 3-year-olds first event win. Cowtown Gangster’s historic genetics have been marinating for quite some time. Cowtown Gangster’s sire is RK 330, a Rooster son out of the infamous producing female K23 Wanda. His dam is Rad’s 603, a daughter of 018 Cowtown and out of Delvecchio 308, a daughter of Dell Hall’s 105. The likes of these female genetics are ones known to produce later maturing individuals, but those that find their way to the Derby and Classic events come with the big-time buck required of rank, upper level rider bulls. The bull’s mother was purchased from Bobby Delvecchio at Tom Teague’s Sale by Ricky Carpenter and Jay Hutchinson. After watching the bull since he was a young bucker, Shane George of Show Sports Bucking Bulls along with his partner of several years Jane Clark of New York, made the move to get the contender purchased. The entire group has all worked together to really try and promote the salty, well-bred bucker. Although the bull didn’t have a lot of luck in futurities, it seems

the brazen brindle has finally hit his lick when being straddled by riders. “He was always just a tall and lanky bull that was real big boned,” said Carpenter, “and to be honest with you I just think it was a matter of the bull growing up and maturing. As a calf he always had that wow factor, but just seemed awkward. But as a bull he’s an absolute athlete. We decided to wait on him until we could put him under a rider and he’s been really, really good every single trip. He’s just a natural bucker. He’s had some pretty good riders on him and none of them have really warmed him up.” George who’s always had an enormous interest in the PBR and studying the bulls at the Built Ford Tough Level saw something in Cowtown Gangster from the start. “I’ve been watching him for a long time—actually since he was a yearling,” explained George. “He always just had that something special to him. He had something that just stood out. He’s always been explosive and from the time he was a calf when he bucked it made you go wow. Under a dummy there just was never enough time in 4 seconds for him to put it all together for the judges. Then as he matured, he really came into his own. He’s always been athletic and explosive, but under a rider he’s really started to shine and have the opportunity to show the type of power and wow factor that I saw in him from the start. I think he’s got what it takes and that’s why we decided to buy him a few months ago.” While all parties seem to agree on the bovine’s definite “wow factor”, they also agree on his big-attitude paralleling his bucking prowess. “We could not be more thrilled with this monumental win.” And the check for $32,840 is indeed proof that some things really are worth waiting for.

American Heritage Junior Futurity ABBI JR Futurity, Ardmore, Oklahoma

June 10-11, 2011 Ardmore, Oklahoma’s prestigious American Heritage event was also stop number two for ABBI Junior Futurity competitors. With 40 entries and a total payout of $14,285.20, this year’s event was demonstrative of the growth that the ABBI’s Junior program has experienced. After some early morning battling, Rex Samford’s black bull 920 Bring It On blazed his way to the AH Junior Futurity title after a nearly flawless effort. The son of PBR short round, super-star -8 Bring It marked a 21 netting the already accomplished junior breeder a check for $4,000. “He was pretty good today,” said Samford, “and he did what I was expecting. Out of the three bulls I entered he seems to be the most consistent. Unfortunately he wasn’t nominated for the open futurity though.” Samford’s -88 bull also tied for fourth netting another $1,321. Samford’s -88 matched marks of 19.50 with Matt Jack’s -82.

Aaron Halpain’s 6322 Wild Willie walked away the Reserve AH Junior Futurity champ for his impressive out that nabbed 20.25 points and also an impressive check for $2,286. Cade Baker paralleled his dad’s success in the open futurity event when his bull 903 Pistol put up 19.75 points and earned him $1,714. Heather Adcock’s Oklahoma Breakdown, Hunter, Blake and Saylor Ohl’s Big Time Kat and Jonathan Jaynes’ Outside the Box shared a three-way tie for sixth place with 19.25 marked outs and $857 checks, while Zane Walker’s 97 and Taw Sherrell’s Awol Nation rouned out the top paying spots after tying for tenth with 18.75 scores and winning $250 each. If Ardmore’s stop is any indication of what we can expect from these aggressive youth competitors at the remaining junior contests this season, our sport and industry’s future appears to be in good hands.

June 18, 2011 The 5th Annual Texas Bull Bash in Glen Rose, Texas was the second leg of the ABBI/NBBA Co-Sanctioned events held this season. J&J Supply’s Jim Mattox, Gene Baker, Bob Schaff and the Jaynes Gang walked away the big winners after their black, super-salty bovine marked an 89.25. The win paid the group $12,528.25 of the total $40,642.58 event purse. D&H Cattle Co.’s 72W Paradise placed fourth after putting up an 88 and when the score was combined with the spotted bovine’s Stephenville mark, he came out the $10,000 Bull Bonus winner with a combined two-event total of 173 points. The $10,000 Bull Bonus awarded by BoydFloyd Bull Co. and Bar F Productions, was only one way in which breeders from both associates were rewarded. “This was a landmark set of events for the ABBI and the NBBA,” said ABBI President Brad Boyd. “Both organizations benefited greatly from this joint venture. It was great to see both associations come together and offer additional competitive opportunities for breeders. I’m glad we have been able to work together with the NBBA. What’s good for our members is good for us.” NBBA President Marty Foutch echoed Boyd’s sentiments and also felt the co-sanctioned events were great for the industry. “I think this was a great opportunity for bull owners and breeders—two of the largest and longest-standing organizations coming together to produce these elite events,” shared Foutch. “As a bull breeder and owner, it was a great concept to be able to pay one entry fee and earn points for both associations’ finals.” The two ABBI/NBBA co-sanctioning events not only gave breeders extra competitive opportunities but also added thousands of dollars to each associations finals purses.

The second annual Mike White Invitational Bull Riding was held at the Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The ABBI and producers Mike Greer, and Mike Pedersen once again teamed up to bring this event together. The weather is usually hot this time of the year, but rain showers gave us some unusually nice days this year. The spacious covered pens with their 20 foot fans kept the cattle content, along with the security provided that kept the bull and owners content. This event had 60 bulls competing with 30 bulls bucked each night, giving the Saturday night owners something to think about after watching the Friday night’s performance. Friday night, bull 45-07B Rainbow owned by Ratjen Rodeo Ranch outscored the field with a score of 89.25. 45-07B had the kick and power to have his rider in the dirt in 2 second or less. Second place was Sanford/Tolman’s 15-7 Centerfold scoring 88.75; third and fourthwent to Ackerman/Cox’s 705 Back Bender and 789 Bad Blake, Lightning C Cattle Co, each with 88.25. Fifth place went to T66 Bump & Grind, Kash Cattle Co/ Potter, with an 88.25. Saturday night, bulls 78 Poker Face, Box K Cattle Co, and Henry Wilson & Marty Foutch’s bull V-5 shared the win with 89.0. These two bulls performed with plenty of power and kick. Third went to A712 Pit Boss, Ace of Spades/Pit Boss Syndication with 88.75, Fourth place went to D&H Cattle Co / Buck Cattle Co /Shores Cattle Co’s TD2 Bucking Machine 88.5 and fifth was 46 Little Moody, D&H Cattle Co / Dam Cattle Co

When the scores were tallied Saturday night, bull 45-07B Rainbow was declared the winner of this event. Rainbow had shown the judges he had the total package to win. Jackie Ratjen, owner of 45-07B was excited about his win and remarked, “I am truly excited about my bull winning at this event. I usually don’t like to get too far from home to compete, but wanted to sell some of my bulls and I am sure glad I came. I want to thank Circle T Ranch for buying this great bull (45-07B Rainbow) and look forward to watching him buck on television.” Sandy Kirby who came with Ratjen added, “Jackie does not compete much but when he does his bulls kick butt. Ratjen’s bull After Party was the PRCA’s 2010 bull of the year and this bull, 45-07B, if they (Circle T Ranch & Rodeo) baby him along could be the next Bushwacker.” Second was split between V-5 & 78 Poker Face each with 89. Fourth and fifth were A712 Pit Boss and 15-7 Centerfold each with 88.75 and sixth place was TD2 Bucking Machine 88.5. Mike Greer and Mike Pedersen went the extra mile putting on this event, everything was first class. This event had Doug Butcher as ring manager along with Billy Cochran and crew loading bulls and everything was done smoothly. With the good turnout of fans, I am sure the 2012 event is already being planned.

Mike Greer and Mike Pedersen, producers of the second annual Mike White Invitational Bull Riding, once again added a futurity to this year’s event. Fifty nine bulls made the trip to the Burton Coliseum located in Lake Charles, Louisiana to compete in the ABBI event. The bulls were housed in the spacious back pens noted for the comfort provided by the 20 foot fans that transform the hot humidity into a pleasant breeze. Also this year the promoters provided night time security. No one was allowed in the pens from 11pm until 6am, giving the owners assurance no one would be able to disturb their bull during the night. Going into the event everyone was betting on the newly crowned American Heritage Champion Bull, 918 Bad Wine who has had tremendous success this season. This bull had been winning in most everything he entered. When the event started and after 918 had bucked it appeared he was headed to his next victory, little did anyone know there was a youngster who had different plans for this one. Pillow / Barrett brought a little surprise, 112 Jungle Smoke , who when the gate was opened exploded. It was like he was hit with a bolt of lightning. His quickness and buck
were amazing and judge number two marked his kick 5.0, giving him a score of 23.75. All anyone could say was wow! The announcer said, “I guess he will be in the top five.” Everyone else was saying who’s going to finish second. He had just topped the top bull by 1.75 points, amazing in today’s competition. One of the owners, Bobby Pillow, summed up his thoughts, “112 is just a nice little bull and has been coming along for about six months now and getting better every time. He sure bucked great today and had a good trip.” Second place went to 918 Bad Wine, owned by J&J Supply/Gene Baker/ Bob Schaff with 22, splitting third was X195 Peruvian Necktie, Luke Sullivan/the Jaynes Gang, and Bull 481, James Davis & Chad Guidry, each with 21.75. In fifth was was B&S 724, Hosey Bridges & Chris Smith, with 20.75. The top 10 bulls at this event were truly great bulls and the pen entered was a nice match. Some bulls just didn’t have their day and some little bobble ruined their performance. Hats off to Mike Greer and his crew (Kent Cox & Dean Wilson with the dummies and Billy Cochran in the back pens) for an excellent job. ABBI’s Zach Gunter presents the winning check to Pillow/Berrett

The ABBI Futurity was held on Independence Day and featured bulls from as far away as Texas. “I was proud to be able to have an event here in my home state,” said ABBI VP Kaycee Simpson. “I was glad to give people around here a venue to compete at as well as having breeders from coast-to-coast come and experience West Jordan hospitality.” 72 Pandemic from Boyd-Floyd/Gunderson had the most spark with an 87.75. “We were really pleased with Pandemic, he bucked really good like his sire Pandora’s Box with lots of speed,” shared Boyd. “We were Rank 1 2 3 4 5/6 5/6 7 8 9/10 9/10
