The Harlo Music Project (HMP) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that brings family-friendly music festivals to the heart of Wheatland County, with a mission to celebrate community, culture, and the power of live music. Founded in 2018, HMP has grown from a small event with one stage and 200 attendees to a lively festival showcasing six artists across two stages, attracting an average of 1,100 attendees—children included, as they get in free. This annual event, typically held during the second weekend of August, takes place on the main street of Harlowton, transforming the area into a buzzing celebration of local and national talent, delicious food from local vendors, and community partnerships that give back.
The festival is not just about great music; it’s about fostering connections and supporting local causes. Since 2021, HMP has donated $5,500 to community partnerships, including organizations like the Wheatland County Food Bank, Journey Winds, the Upper Musselshell Museum, the Milwaukee Depot, Harlowton High School Athletics, and the CommUNITY Builders. Volunteers play a crucial role in bringing the event to life, with dedicated support from groups such as high school sports teams and the Wheatland County Sheriff’s Department. The Harlo Music Project is more than just a festival—it’s an opportunity to re-energize downtown Harlowton, support local businesses, and celebrate everything that makes our rural Montana community unique. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, come join us to enjoy live music, dance in the streets, and be part of something special!

Besides putting a new building on Main Street, they enjoy contributing to local events, various organizations, benefits and local charities. Harlowton Public Library
The Harlowton Public Library was established in 1921 by the Harlowton Woman’s Club. The library was first housed in the Director’s Room at the Continental National Bank. They quickly outgrew that space and moved to a building next to the old post office. The Woman’s Club later had enough petitions signed to purchase the Farmers National Bank Building (currently City Hall). Since then, the City of Harlowton has purchased the current building at 13 Central Ave S. Many updates have been done to the building and they offer a variety of activities! In addition to library material, they provide a safe space for patrons, free wifi, 10 public computers, jetpacks, four device charging stations, public restroom, multiple study/gathering spaces and a specious conference room with projector, screen, and whiteboard. They recently started a “library of things”. They have 35 jigsaw puzzles available for checkout and have recently added yard games to their check out circulation. To keep up with all their activities, follow them at Harlowton Public Library on Facebook.

The City of Harlowton Community Pool has been in its current location since the early 1950’s, when the pool at the park shut down, thanks to the land donations from the Woman’s Club. It was rebuilt with stainless steel sides in the 1990s. It has had major renovations over the years, especially recently. Since 2018 the pool has had new skimmers, piping, boiler, filters, pump, plumbing, diving board, lifeguard chairs, and outdoor furniture for guests to use! The pool house has been rebuilt and is now handicap accessible and meets ADA requirements. Stairs have been added from the parking lot to the pool house, the old wading pool has been removed, and the Kiwanis Club has installed a gazebo and sidewalks. Landscaping for the pool and a pickleball/basketball court will be done in 2025, as well as lighting for the court and the surrounding area of the pool with a storage building being put in. Many people come to use the pool including the local schools of Harlowton and Judith Gap. They currently employ two managers and 6-8 lifeguards all summer. They offer day swim, night swim, lap swim, and swimming lessons! Admission to swim is free thanks to the donations from a local business owner the last few years. All of these updates were made possible by the City of Harlowton workers and council, Kiwanis Club of Harlowton, Callant Family Foundation, Bair Family Trust, Wheatland County Wind Farm, Dennis & Phyllis Washington, Town Pump, and other donations. To keep up to date with one of the BEST pools in Montana, follow their City of Harlowton Community Pool facebook page!

You Know Where You are Going if You Know Where you Have Been: The Purpose of
Museums
Wheatland County is privileged to have two outstanding Museums in the town of Harlowton which reflect the beginning years, the building years, the boom years, and the making-it- work years. The Upper Musselshell Historic Society hosts the story of the County through all stages of its development and the Milwaukee Railroad Museum tells the story of the importance of the Railroad to the Valley.
Mu s e u m s
The history of Harlowton, Wheatland County, and the Upper Musselshell Valley is told through the artifacts and stories contained in the two stories of the prestigious Marshall Building. On the Main Floor, history begins with a cast of Avaceratops Lammersi (Ava), our very own dinosaur, which puts the Museum on Montana’s Dinosaur Trail. Native Americans left their print in the Valley, including the famous flight of the Nez Perce as they fled north to Canada; sheep, cattle, and homesteaders left their marks and ways of life along the Musselshell River and the surrounding mountain ranges (Crazies, Little Belts, and Snowies); the Montana Railroad (then Jawbone) morphed into the Milwaukee Railroad and brought posterity to the Valley for over fifty years—all the stories of these past days are told in the displays and exhibits of the Upper Musselshell Historic Society’s Marshall Building. Built in 1908, the structure was the first stone building in Harlowton. Modern for the time, it measured 40’ by 130’ with such top-notch elements as a freight elevator, steam heat, and electrical lighting. The Main Floor was a mercantile and the top floor was first used for sales rooms and then modified into rooms and small apartments to rent out. Today the Main Floor of the museum contains large and changing displays of Life in the Valley and the upstairs contains permanent exhibits including individual Heritage Rooms showcasing the artifacts of People of the Valley; a medical area showcasing instruments, equipment, and uniforms from beloved local doctors, and a nurse; a Fifties Apartment; an extensive military display, models of trains which ran on the Milwaukee Railroad and a Railroad Library; a sheep wagon, and other fun and interesting bits and pieces telling the stories of this area.
Open Memorial Day through Labor Day and upon special request during the off-season months, the Upper Musselshell Historic Society welcomes visitors for self-guided tours or special interest tours. We would love to see you!
