Favorite memory: 2014 was my favorite year. We produced THREE incredible events, from recreating The Beatle's first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show to the Beach Boys and ending with To Sir With Love. I spent more time with the bands and customers, and some have become my favorite people!

And seeing Beach Boys from the front row was a dream come true!

I guess co-producing Feb ‘64’s re-enactment of The Ed Sullivan Hour was the closest I ever felt to pure fear, and then pure joy.

Favorite memory: Abbey Road means family time to me. It's an event where the whole family can laugh, smile, and enjoy being outside while listening to awesome music.

Favorite memory: Backstage meeting my performing wife Juliana, who lived in Colombia, falling in love, getting married in a civil service, and then having Gary faux “marry” us on the festival stage. Can anyone top that?

Favorite memory: My favorite memory is being part of the team and help shape the festival. As a huge Beatles fan, it has allowed me to meet and work with some exceptional local talent and legendary artists.

Years with AROTR: 14 Favorite memory: My favorite memory is when The Beatrips from Japan kicked off the festival week playing on the roof of the Downtown Louisville Hyatt.

Years with AROTR: 17 Favorite memory: I started the first year in Louisville in 2005. My favorite memory is probably the year America came (2018) because my Mom got to come (she’s disabled) and I got to watch the show with her. She was so happy!!

Dear Brooke, KJ, Huck & Shep, Karen, Craig, Jason, Jonathan, and my entire family ...ain’t got nothing but love babes, 8 days a week Besides the true main event; John, Paul, George, and Ringo, I think the story and success of Abbey Road On The River have always been about family; your family and the years that you have spent here with them, and the AROTR family that you have created with other Beatles fans.

Because you've met each other at AROTR, many of you are now "friends for life." You travel to see each other not just only at Abbey, but you meet at different events, and you call each other "family."

What a beautiful by-product made possible by our love of The Beatles and our festival.

Let me tell you a little bit about my family.

Because without my family, none of this would still be happening or even could have happened.

Maybe most of you know or recognize some of my family, but I'm not sure you know that from the very beginning, they have consistently been working behind the scenes and have been my personal incentive to keep the festival alive.

In 2002 my eldest nephew Jonathan, now a father of three living in San Francisco, registered the domain, created the original logo, and developed and ran the first website for Abbey Road On The River.

My youngest nephew Jason has been filming, organizing videos, making highlight reels, and projecting images on the screens since 2002.

My Florida cousin Greg and his entire family have been coming and helping since 2007, working in the box office and sorting finances.

And finally, my daughter NYC-based Brooke and her husband K.J. and sons Huckleberry and Shepard have always been my true north star.

Since she was five years old, Brooke has been at almost every event I've ever produced. At this one, she performed for many years in many different roles, and she's one of the best singers at the festival. Husband K.J. a Broadway star in his own right, as well has sung at the event and been on the financial team.

Of course, darlin' Huck and Shep are my two beautiful boys, and this week I desperately miss them…but I guess we all will have to be patient. I will never forget 4-year-old Huck joining All You Need Is Love as little Tommy in 2019 and baby Shep being held by Wild Honey Pie Brooke while singing one of her many rockin' songs.

None, though, could be matched by the fact that Brooke and K.J. got married at Abbey Road D.C. in 2012, and when the whole story is told, I guess that will become my most significant memory.

Planning my daughter's wedding in our nation's capital, and sharing it with 200 friends and family from across the USA and with so many of you, is the meaning of Abbey Road On The River and family.

He is the longest-serving continuous Abbey Road staffer.

To all of you, in the end …even if I didn't know where I was going to, even when I was so much younger than today, you helped me when I was down, and I do appreciate you all being around.

My second oldest nephew Craig has been handling the on-site finances since 2007 (before that he sold the lemonade.)

Another nephew, Kyle served in the same role several times in the early teens.

It’s not been a hard day’s night; you’ve always made me feel alright. And soon, when I am making all my nowhere plans for nobody, you will all be the absolute #1 reason this almost nowhere plan worked.

Long before we went digital, my sister Karen mailed everyone their tickets.

How It All Began For 73 million of us, it all began the same way… February 9, 1964, watching the Ed Sullivan show, but for the 73 million people who were tuned in, they had to have already been turned on. And I can still remember the first time I heard a Beatles song or even the words The Beatles.

to the pool singing the happiest song I had ever heard… "Well, she was just 17, you know what I mean", and of course, to me, all of 15 at the time, 17 was an older woman and I didn’t know what he meant. I asked him what that song was, and he said, "it was The Beatles," and I said, "what's a Beatles" and he replied, "they're the 4 coolest guys from England, and they have a drummer named Ringo."

It was December 1963, and I was at swim team practice in Cleveland Heights, Ohio when the captain of the swim team came be-bopping

And that’s how I met the Beatles.

A breakthrough live music experience for all of us, but witnessing for the first time, Tim Piper channel John Lennon plus The Concert for George with over 50 performers, including his sister Louise was surreal.

Lawrence Macca was a sensation and these guys from Canada. Does anyone remember their name?

There was nothing like that first one. The uncertainty of not knowing if any of you would come (or would Apple or EMI shut us down before we opened?). And then to have it be such a magical musical experience for the 12,000 who took the chance.

This year, it almost didn't happen because the venue turned over management to the House of Blues, and we were working off a very large first-year loss.

Show Highlight:

The fantasy reunion concert featuring Tim Piper, Lawrence Macca, Pete Santora, and Jim “Ringo” Martin was the closest thing to what The Beatles might have looked and sounded like at age 50. 1964 twice, plus the debuts of Hal Bruce.

Have to admit it’s getting better, a little better all the time

2004 was such a pivotal year; the 40th anniversary of the Beatles touring America, and we were able to move our event to historic Public Hall Auditorium, the same stage that The Beatles performed on in 1964. All You Need is Love presented the White Album from start to finish, Hal Bruce sang 214 songs in order, and The Beatrips of Japan and The Backwards (Czech Republic) made their debuts. We knew who we were and what we wanted to be, but not where we were going.

The Long & Winding Road Summer 2004 I started looking for other river cities where maybe we would have a better chance for sponsorships and not be in the fast-lane competitive environment we were in Cleveland.

The move to Louisville happened so fast that, in hindsight, it had to have been preordained.

The whole thing was put together in two weeks in early September 2004.

The Mayor's Office, The Convention and Visitors Bureau, The Galt House Hotel, The Kentucky Center, and two radio stations quickly came on board. Still, when Fifth Third Bank, after one meeting, agreed to be the title sponsor and underwrote 50% of our budget, well, at that point, saddle up, we knew we were moving to Louisville.

We got off to such a fast start in Louisville; the media was very supportive. It’s funny the doubters told me that Louisville was all Bluegrass and no one would come because on Memorial Day Weekend everyone goes to the lake. I thought, "everybody does not go to the lake, and there are 3 billion Beatles fans."

Show Highlight:

The Greek Beats all the way from Athens, Greece made that rock and roll music sound like a symphony; they discovered Rachel. The Smithereens performed in the Whitney Theatre inside the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. I think Pat DiNizio, lead singer of the band took off his pants (RIP Pat-you rocked.)

On Memorial Day Weekend 2005 and 2006, almost everybody did come to Abbey Road On The River, but sometimes the love you make isn't real love because my new Louisville partners decided to break up the band and the partnership. Perhaps that was the worst summer of my life…Lawyers and all that fun stuff. But in the end, just before I moved my end of the event back to Cleveland, they gave in, and with the help of some incredible people, I was able to buy them out and keep the party going in Louisville.

2007

IN THE NEWS: This is a full-page ad that The Louisville CVB purchased for us in USA Today. This was the second time our friends at Apple sent us a "special letter."

Behind The Scenes:

After two days of intense rehearsals in Belleville, Ontario, some suggested we scrap the project, But Hal and I kept talking, and then with our production company's expert guidance, we just kept going forward.

There was never a completely full rehearsal until the night it premiered. The 30 performers had still never been together on the same stage. There was a packed house at the Bomhard Theater; everybody eagerly anticipated what this would be.

It was a masterpiece – that’s in fact what it was, and we have continued to do it with different masterful players for 15 years.

We often thought it was the end before, but in the end, all you need is LOVE.

I read the news today oh boy

2007 was the introduction of LOVE. LOVE was born as a true labor of LOVE, dreamed up and put together by a group of musicians who had never before played together. First discussed by me and Hal Bruce in late 2006, we reached out All You Need is Love and Mark Beyer, who abruptly told me, "it's impossible, it can't be done," but then, loving a challenge, he joined the project. Then we got Rachel Blanton, British Export, and soon everyone under Hal's direction began learning their very complicated parts.

2007 was another bumpy year because banks were starting to hurt and suddenly Fifth Third Bank pulled out, which was a substantial financial loss. However, stop the presses! In the 11th hour, the great newspaper The Courier-Journal came on board as our title sponsor and saved the event.

We tested the Brian Epstein stage "Where New Music Goes to Get Discovered," and a lot of great young talent took the stage, including Headliner Ike Reilly. Our “Beatles” bands led by Pete Best saw the debut of The Cryers and The Sun Kings. Scotland’s Itchycoo Park, Germany’s Lucy In The Sky, and Puerto Rico’s Jukebox moved to the front of the lineup.

2009 marks the debuts of the Newbees, BritBeat, and Union Jack, who have stayed with us for a very long time and have been part of some fantastic concerts.

For the 40th anniversary of Abbey Road, Hal Bruce with The Backwards and Rachel Blanton created an amazing concert called Abbey Road Supersized. I think the medley section of that concert ran 20 minutes by itself. It was again another tremendous musical achievement from Hal.

National Harbor & Gaylord Hotel

You Say You Wanna Revolution In late June 2009, I opened an email that looked like spam, and embedded in this long email was a picture of National Harbor, Maryland and the Gaylord National Hotel.

I could not believe my eyes, and I immediately called the Gaylord Hotel and asked for the Director of Sales, who came right on the phone. I said, "We can fill 1,500 hotel room nights," and she said, "keep talking…."

Two days later, I was in Washington D.C., meeting with the Gaylord National Hotel and the management of National Harbor. When I left two days later, with a 3-year contract to do the event on Labor Day weekend 2010-2012, 14 months later. Complicating the situation on the ride home, I had been in conversations with Churchill Downs to purchase AROTR, possibly relocate there, and to expand Abbey Road On The River to several of their race tracks. They were starting a big event division, but it came and went very quickly.

But on the ride home, the president of the new division told me he did not like the idea of National Harbor (D.C.), but I was determined to do it, and I told him that I was going to do it anyway. During the same call, he brought up some other issues that the Board of Directors was having with our concept because they felt that they needed an endorsement from Paul McCartney – something I told them was not going to happen. So after the seven-hour ride home, we decided to call off the idea of selling and moving to Churchill, and I kept going forward with my plans, my way.

Though we dodged a hurricane or two and miscommunications on certain things with National Harbor that ultimately did work out, I was exhausted and done by the time we had completed three.

All I cared about was pulling off the Louisville, D.C., festivals, and my daughter's wedding.

And when we had finished everything, we felt that it was time to close the book on D.C. We sure look back at D.C. with great nostalgia, but it was probably the best health and business decision to leave.

Show Highlight:

In December 2011, while packing for a trip, I was distractedly watching a PBS special and heard Grace singing, "one pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small." When I turned to look, I realized it was Jefferson Starship with this incredible new lead singer who wasn't Grace! I immediately started searching for their management company and, within an hour, was speaking to their manager.

Within another hour, I had booked them to headline the 2012 event.

This was the first time we had had a national headliner this big, and after Jefferson Starship played both Louisville and D.C., we knew that we were always going to have renowned headliners. To feed our heads and clear us from COVID, we even brought them back in September 2021, and it was just the pill we were all needing.

By comparison, 2013 was easy. We just had one event now, featuring Denny Laine, Leon Russell, and Peter Noone, and a memorable concert from Gavin Pring, Graham Alexander, and Nube 9; we had hit our stride.

While every band has been a difference maker, the ones here in bold are the ones who made us dance and sing and love the music that much more.

We have been treated to the very best Beatles and 60s music any event in this country has ever experienced. Every single year we have managed to find 40, 50, or even 60 bands who could play the music almost as well as the Beatles.

Every year you all tell me that this was the best lineup ever, and I guess it's the truth because every year, our bands have been the best, and the only way we can thank them appropriately is by putting together this little book and letting them know that forever they are in the book of Abbey Road On The River. They are the ballad of Abbey Road On The River.

Behind The Scenes:

2014 was the 50th anniversary of 'the boys' coming to America, so we knew we needed to make it a spectacular celebration. I thought, "why not go for The Beach Boys?" When the call came that we got them, it was the most over the moon feeling I ever had as a concert promoter. So with them, Ambrosia, John Sebastian, and Laurence Juber, 2014 was our benchmark year.

We did three major events that year: February ‘64, where we re-created the entire Ed Sullivan show act for act, note for note, before a live audience in the Bomhard Theater at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. And then, when Paul came to Louisville in the fall, we did another four-day festival called To Sir with Love, which also included a huge concert at Fourth Street Live.

Sadly, 2014 ended horribly because we lost our beloved Rachel Blanton, an unexpected loss that we all still feel. Rachel was a big part of our evolution from just a plain old tribute festival to something much more special. When we booked the Orchestra (ELO), and I told her (just weeks before she passed), she couldn't believe that she would be playing Jeff Lynne's music with them. She was so excited.

In 2015, dedicated to Rachel and to kick off the festival Hal Bruce and Mark Beyer created a moving memorial concert, and every year since some stage or area is named for her.

The Orchestra, the successor band to ELO, was the big get for us this year, and they were as good as all the ELO records. It was uncanny how perfect they sounded still with two original members from ELO and primarily former members of ELO II. Other than the Beach Boys, I'm not sure I've ever seen a happier audience.

Other big highlights in 2015 were when Jon Keats, Bill Heckle, and Julia Baird, our friends from International Beatle Week and the owners of the Cavern Club, came to our festival and hosted a meet and greet with all of our fans. Julia, JWL's baby sister, was just a wonderful ambassador all over the festival site.

Behind The Scenes:

2016 was meant to be our last year in Louisville, and what a bittersweet year it was. We were able to book Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Zombies and Felix Cavaliere.

It was quite a way to say goodbye to our adopted home in Louisville. Leave them wanting more, lol.

Except for me, no one will ever know exactly why we left Louisville for Jeffersonville.

Lots of rumors, stories, and conjecture, but it worked out best for Louisville, it worked out best for Jeffersonville, and it worked out best for Abbey Road on the River.

When All You Need Is Love performed the complete White Album, we surprised Andy and brought Prudence Farrow on stage so he could sing Dear Prudence, to Prudence.

In early 2016, as word traveled that 2016 would be our last year in Louisville, the phone rang, and Jeffersonville was calling.

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to take the call, but I am sure glad I did because our five years in Jeffersonville have been, if not the best five years, the least stressful and the most organized – maybe because we’ve had the help of the best local government and parks and recreation department I have ever worked with.

2018

Show Highlight:

We celebrated the 50th anniversary of the most tumultuous (until now) year in America (1968) by having the band America. One big highlight was when we re-created Dion’s “Abraham Martin and John" as a tribute to the tumult of 1968, and I think everybody knows that it was three of the best minutes we have ever had at Abbey Road on the River.

Show Highlight:

2019 was the last full pre-COVID May event we were able to do until now (if we are really doing it right now), I don't know because we are printing before the festival.

The Cowsills, Buckinghams, and The Grass Roots took the event by storm before the storm and treated us all to two of the happiest concerts we had ever hosted.

No one knew what was coming, but on Sunday, May 26, we had the rainstorm of all rainstorms. During the high winds, I thought everything was going to fall down, but it held, and miraculously we reopened three or four hours later with BritBeat and The Grass Roots, and the evening was saved.

The one that didn't happen Show Highlight:

2020 got off to an amazing start, including signing a contract to produce Abbey Road on the Island at the Tilles Center at LIU. Sales were booming, then all of a sudden on March 15, the world stopped. But we couldn't let that stop us from putting on amazing concerts, so we asked some of our favorite bands to help out. Jukebox did a concert from Puerto Rico, All You Need Is Love did a show from Belleville, Ontario, but Classicstone shocked us all with a socially distanced (possibly illegal) rooftop concert in Bogota, Colombia, with surprise cameos of Rafa, Juliana & Josh in Louisville, and Juan Jade from his cruise ship on which he was stuck for over 9 months. Between the May and October virtual events (JL80), we raised $15,000 to distribute among the bands and staff out of work.

2021 was still uncertain with COVID affecting our everyday lives, so we postponed AROTR to Labor Day weekend.

But in April, we decided we could put on a safe event, so we created Penny Lane at the Park, a two-day mini-festival and Hard Days Night even did a bonus Rooftop Concert from the Walcott Apartment balcony. The main event in September featured headliners The Fab Four, Peter Asher, Laurence Juber and Jefferson Starship, who blew everyone away with their set.
