Catering New beginnings and new starts for Year 10 and 11’s in Catering.

On the 17th May Catering went on a trip to Harrods and Borough Market. This trip gave the students a chance to understand what food is like outside of Abbey Manor College. While at Harrods many of the Year 10 students realised that the dishes that they create at Abbey Manor College could be more advanced and it gave them food for thought. As for the Year 11’s they saw the potential roles that they could work in with a few students looking into going into the pastry sector.

We then went to Borough Market to explore different types of foods and styles. This again gave the students a new understanding that Catering is not just in restaurants and hotels and that they can work on food stalls as well.

Inside Borough Market Regarding the topic of new beginnings for the Year 10’s they have had their creative juices expanded and they are now looking forward to creating new dishes. The Year 11’s have been given the opportunity to see the potential Catering roles outside of the Restaurant or Hotel industry. Things are looking

bright for our students, and the world is their oyster .

Art Abbey Manor College My journey Young girl, with a dream; but got excluded from mainstream.

Started Abbey Manor College, with a lot of knowledge.

I thought because I attend a pupil referral unit, I couldn’t achieve but now I disbelieve.

Had given up on school, looking back I was a fool.

Had an attitude; still do…but back then I loved to feud.

Lost within society, with a big personality.

Peer pressure and social norms were a powerful influence on my behaviour; it’s hard being a teenager.

Ponder When I look back on my journey, I see mistakes. When I look in the mirror now, I see strength, learned lessons and pride in myself. If it weren’t for the struggle, I wouldn’t have the strength to move on from this place into college. I have learned no matter what happens, no matter how far you seem to be away from where you want to be; never stop believing that you will somehow make it. Have an unrelenting belief that things will work out, that the things you desire may not happen today. But you should continue to persist and persevere.

“God uses difficulties to do work in us. He won’t allow a difficulty unless He has divine purpose for it.”

Although I felt I didn’t belong in Abbey Manor College, and rebuked the organisation, they never gave up on me. They were patient and had faith in me and that’s exactly what I needed to make a complete turnaround in my life.

I give them special thanks for believing in me, building my confidence and moulding me to be who I am today.

Sport and the Mind In Professional Sport we have been studying about the psychological side of sport and what your mind can do. There are lots of things that can affect your performance like your motivation levels, your personality type and your confidence levels. I am going to look at one of my favourite football players, Yaya Toure, who is a central midfield player for Manchester City who has also got over 100 caps for the Ivory Coast and see why he needs to be strong mentally as well as physically.

Motivation Levels Yaya will have to be highly motivated so that he can play at a high level. He won the Champions League with Barcelona, and he has also won the Premier League with Manchester City. In 2015 he won the African Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast. To win these tournaments, you have to be highly motivated and strong mentally.

To play in a big final, he will have to be strong mentally so that he will not make mistakes and play poorly because of the situation he is in.

Personality Type To play a team sport like football you are more likely to have

an extrovert personality. This means that Yaya Toure will probably have a personality that means he is outgoing and sociable. This personality type is needed because you have to work as part of a team and with other players. If you like to keep yourself to yourself and are quiet, you will not be able to be a leader on the pitch like Yaya Toure is, and you will probably struggle to play well.

Confidence If you are confident in your ability, you are more likely to do better in your sport when you play. Yaya must have a lot of confidence in his ability to be a top level as a footballer. To play big matches every week in front of large audiences you need to be confident otherwise you would make mistakes, and get substituted as you would be scared. He is also excellent at taking penalties and free-kicks, and you must be a confident player in the team to have this responsibility.

In conclusion, Yaya Toure is not only a good player and strong player physically he is very strong mentally which makes him one of the most successful football players in the world.

A Year in Construction I enjoyed the practical side of the course. I like using my hands to build and create new things, one of the projects that I enjoyed doing was called Paper Hanging. What is Paper Hanging you may ask? Before I started the course, I wouldn’t have had a clue. Paper Hanging in laymen terms means wallpapering. First of all, I had to prepare the wall. I painted the wall to make sure the wall was fully waterproofed. Secondly, I sanded down the wall to make sure there were no bits or nibs. Putting up the wallpaper was not as hard as I thought it would be, Marcus taught me the skills that I needed to pass this assignment with flying colours. I put up the wallpaper which was called lining paper in the industry. Lining-papers act like a blank canvas which allows you to paint over. I have enjoyed this year in Construction; it has taught me discipline and self-control.

Where do I start, this year has flown by like a blink of an eye, I am coming to the end of Year 11 and when I look back on what I have achieved in such a short time, I feel proud. I think

my favourite assignment in Construction was called Installing Rainwater Goods’, this involved installing a guttering system. The first thing I did was to identify the start point of the first brackets and a where the last bracket would go. The guttering had to run on a slope so the rain would run down to the downpipe and into the drain. I was really happy with the different skills that I have learned this year, and I am ready for what the future brings.

Travel and Tourism The push for a third runway at Heathrow Airport With the forthcoming elections looming the topic of a third runway at Heathrow airport has reared its head. It has been reported that Theresa May’s manifesto will not mention the Heathrow third runway after pressure from Boris Johnson and Tory critics. So just how important is a 3rd run way?

Heathrow Airport is a vital asset for communities in West London, the Thames Valley and the whole country.

Many local people want to ensure it is protected and equipped to grow in the future so that it remains the UK’s premier airport, able to match its foreign competitors.

There is massive support for Heathrow expansion from across all political parties, the majority of UK businesses, international airlines, local firms and, most importantly, from residents.

The Airports Commission public consultation (Nov 2014 /Jan 2015) report revealed 82 percent of the 70,591 responses backed Heathrow expansion.

These were mostly from residents near the airport.

And a recent populous poll of more than 12,000 residents in the constituencies and boroughs

close to Heathrow found many more residents (50 per cent) supported Heathrow expansion than opposed it (33 percent).

People in the local area are rightly proud of the airport, and those that work there are particularly pleased that Heathrow carries 78 percent of the UK’s long-haul flights, a quarter of UK exports by value and is our country’s largest port.

The counter argument: Everyone has the right to breathe air without fear that it is shortening their lives and the right to sleep at night free from noise.

Research shows that air pollution stunts the development of children’s lungs and excessive noise increases the risk of heart disease and damage to the cardio-vascular system. The NHS spends around £20bn a year treating pollution-related illness.

Airports encourage car journeys because airport parking makes money.

Fifty-five million more passengers create the need for major road and rail projects, requiring long-term maintenance. This would further strain tax payer’s pockets, and Heathrow won’t say how many long-term jobs,

if any, were gained by building Terminal 5.

One in five workers in Heathrow Villages is in the lowest grade of employment, and the ward has Hillingdon’s lowest percentage of professionals.

Brexit Since Brexit, the UK has been left in a state of panic and fear of what lies ahead for the future of the economy.

A third runway is a signal of intent. It is the greatest sign that the UK is open for business.

Once the UK had made its decision to leave, the decision on airport expansion became apparent. Currently, Heathrow airport handles 30 % of UK exports outside the EU but are now at full capacity I think if you want to be a global Britain, you have to expand your global airport; there is no question about it. The public has had their say, and I’m voting for a new runway!

Health and Social Care I have enjoyed my time studying Health and Social Care. Most of all I liked learning about nutrition and understanding what different types of food groups there are and how they affect your body. I also enjoyed learning about human lifespan development and how PIES affects us – this stands for Physical, Intellectual, Emotional and Social development.

I’m looking forward to starting Sports where I can expand my knowledge about the human body, but I will miss my peers and teachers in Health and Social Care and the support they have provided me over the past year.

ICT Majority of the students within the I.T class have all completed their coursework and exams. There are a small number of students left who still have outstanding work to hand in. On that note, it seems the current KS4 Information Technology class is coming to an end and a new group of students will fill the gap.

Unisa Kargbo a previous I.T student that has completed all his work and predicted to achieve a level 2 BTEC Certificate in Information Technology, was happy to answer a few questions explaining his time spent within his I.T class and Abbey Manor College.

When asked about his time in the College he responded “my time was good here, when I first came here I thought that I’m not going to be able to achieve anything, I will only get three GCSE’s but in fact I managed to get those three GCSE’s in the first year. I’m on track to get my fifth one this year, in a couple weeks and I found that my time here has been spent well and I plan to carry on achieving and doing good things, yeah”.

When discussing how he felt about moving on to Sixth Form he said “I’m happy about going to Sixth Form it’s a new environment, studying hard, A-levels you have got to work hard and after that I want to go University.

Everything looks alright”. In addition he was also asked about his time within the I.T class, peers and teachers he expressed that “this I.C.T has some good memories, from when I first started until now, I’m am going to miss this place you know.

What is the issue in exposing the youth of today to indecent images/videos?

During my Music course, I had to complete an assignment where I had to choose a topic from the music industry and then develop on it.

I decided to speak about women who are degraded specifically in Hip-Hop/ R’n’B. One video shows a male pouring champagne over a woman half-dressed which demonstrates the lack of respect men have towards women. However, females do not make it look good for themselves e.g. Nicki Minaj, who’s always dressing in a thong and hardly anything on her top half.

It shows they have no respect for themselves and it gives their fans the wrong image. It gives off the wrong idea that it’s okay for young girls to wear inappropriate outfits, but on the other hand for boys/men, it gives off an image that all young boys know about is selling drugs and sleeping with women.

None of this has to be this way.

Back in the day music videos did not portray men and women this way. This is how it was back in the day… Women were dressed from head to toe and were still considered beautiful; men referred to women as their queens.

Now in this generation, the majority of men call girls ‘bitches’, ‘hoes’, etc.

SO WHERE HAS IT ALL GONE WRONG?

There are many reasons as to why you or I may think this could be but the truth of the matter is that the media is openly not censoring these pictures and visuals for the likes of my generation which is rather disturbing. I feel that the media have an agenda here. I feel the more they expose us to oversexualised media, the more we become used to it at a young age.

If we are used to this being the ‘norm’, then we too will engage a lot more in activities like this. Which will then start to destroy the family unit because children are having children. There is no foundation.

The media know that we love music and will do anything to keep us spending money. They also know sex sells! They know most boys will support Nicki Minaj as opposed to Adele just based on looks. So… why they do it? Who knows! But what we do know is that it’s getting worse and worse with the likes of Little Mix who’s target audience is 11-14-year-olds, and they are practically naked ALL THE TIME! Just be sure to monitor what your child is exposed to as much as you can.
