The Inner-City Scholarship Fund (ICSF) is the signature program of CSF. Through this fund, thousands of children in-need receive partial scholarships to attend Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Boston. Scholarships are given primarily to students in high-poverty neighborhoods. Over the past three decades, CSF and the ICSF have distributed more than $100 million in scholarship aid to over 50,000 students in the Greater Boston community. With an astounding 100% high school graduation rate, these scholarships are changing lives.

CSF Rises to the COVID-19 Challenge When COVID-19 thrust our world into a pandemic in March of 2020, CSF’s community showed up for our students. Because of your support, CSF was able to respond in-kind by providing over $1.2M in additional scholarship aid and extraordinary support to help our schools and students.

$168K in new guaranteed awards to 80 students due to COVID-19.

$508K in emergency funding in FY20 for 665 students suffering from additional challenges related to COVID-19.

Extraordinary support totaling $250K to Cristo Rey Boston High School and $250K to Notre Dame Cristo Rey High School. When businesses shut down, these schools’ corporate work-study programs were halted. This left the schools with a large decrease in tuition assistance as their students were not placed in internships, which help defray the cost of their tuition.

In times of crisis, the urgent need for greater access to high-quality education is brought to light. Support for these students is more critical now than ever before. From all of us at CSF, thank you. You are living proof that we can do so much more, together— even when we’re apart.

A Word from the President & Director Last year we celebrated thirty years of Building Minds and Changing Lives and it certainly was a year to remember. We will recall this year with gratitude and a renewed appreciation for the impact our work has on students and families— work that our supporters make possible. Thank you for your trust and for being part of this life-changing mission.

In the past year, students supported by the Inner-City Scholarship Fund have felt the enormous weight of COVID-19 on top of our nation’s current struggle for social and economic justice. CSF Scholars and their families have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic with above average infection and unemployment rates in the towns where they reside. These families are also the most vulnerable to educational inequalities.

For our students, the one constant is their Catholic school and superior education. Many families were left unsure how they were going to make it work. However, CSF was overwhelmed by the incredible response of our supporters. Thanks to this generosity, over 600 families received emergency fund support, making it possible for them to stay in their Catholic school.

Despite the pandemic, Catholic school leaders focused on providing the best education possible while keeping students and faculty safe.

The needs of students and families were always the primary questions to answer. The majority of our Catholic schools opened this fall

in person, five days a week. This would not have been possible without the generous and increased support of our donors. Our families needed support and you were there for them.

As you review this annual report, we encourage you to read about what you make possible. With your help, CSF provided $9.6M in scholarship support and another $1.1M in programmatic aid to over 4,000 low-income students in greater Boston. Thank you! We are pleased to continue to receive the highest ratings for program efficiency, financial management and transparency from Charity Navigator and Guidestar. Our aim is to maximize the resources entrusted to us by our donors and any feedback you have to further this goal is most appreciated.

This coming year, students and families remain the priority. As the economy struggles to recover, the students and families we serve are most at risk. We must be there for them again this year, as we were last year, and in the years that follow. I hope you will continue to join us as we work through these challenges and continue together in Building Minds and Changing Lives.

Learning from the Best: CSF students receive a crash course on the stock market

Four CSF-funded schools participated in the Fidelity Stock Market Challenge. This team-based competition allowed students from each school to attend two three-hour sessions consisting of a stock market and investments curriculum. The curriculum was taught by current and former Fidelity employees who volunteered their time and resources to bring the stock market to the “classroom.” Student teams traveled to the Fidelity office in Boston to learn and pitch their own stock selection to a panel of judges who observed their three-month performance as the culmination of the program. Each school was paired up with a Fidelity coach to provide support to the students.

Joe Wickwire, Pat Venanzi and Rich Thompson (supporters of CSF and past/current Fidelity employees) founded the program and spearheaded the launch earlier this year. Fidelity, a longtime partner, has been a champion of the Inner-City Scholarship Fund (ICSF) for over thirty years, thanks in large part to Peter Lynch, President Emeritus of the ICSF. The four schools that participated serve a high concentration of in-need students and opened doors to a world that many students find intimidating or out of reach. The participating schools were Fontbonne Academy, Cathedral High School, Cardinal Spellman High School and Saint Joseph Preparatory School.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic halted insessions this past spring, it didn't stop this group from seeing the program through to the end. The winners of Fidelity's Stock Market Challenge are as follows: • The top-performer was Activision Blizzard (ATVI), up a whopping 29%! Congratulations to Cathedral Team 2 for this shrewd choice!

• The second best-performer was Electronic Arts (EA), which grew 18%. Congrats to Spellman Team 2 and Fontbonne Team 2 on this wise selection!

• The third best-performing stock was Nike (NKE), which grew 11%. Congratulations to both Cathedral Team 3 and St. Joseph’s Team 1 on this great pick!

When it came to thinking about a legacy gift, Rick knew it was a family decision. Rick and his wife Gabrielle believe that a true legacy is not the inheritance they will leave for their children, but rather the values that they will instill within them. As reform Jews, Rick and his family take seriously their obligation to do “Tzedakah,” or charity in support of the poor and needy. Their children know the value of giving back and helping others. They have been taught that real wealth comes not from material possessions, but from the relationships one makes, the lives one touches, and the legacy one leaves behind.

The decision to leave a bequest in his will is a “family legacy,” of which the entire family is proud.

A Word From Peter S. Lynch

Dear Friends of CSF, Thank you.

Last year found the children we serve and their families in a dreadful crisis! In normal times, these individuals are living near the financial edge. With the pandemic primarily impacting hourly workers and people in the service and retail industry, there was an immediate and profound negative impact on the children we serve. In thirty years of being involved in this work, the need for your assistance to help young people get a positive start in life has never been greater. You have responded most generously and this has made a profound difference.

Your continued support and incredible response to the COVID-19 emergency fund leading up to and during, The Inner-City Scholarship Fund Virtual Gala, resulted in over $500,000 in incremental funding to respond immediately to the significant pressure our students were facing. This amazing response allowed these children to complete their school year. The speed and quality of our online teaching has received numerous accolades and expressions of gratitude, and if there is a Yelp score for online learning, our schools would have received five stars for the promptness in shifting to online and the quality of continued teaching and learning. The stability and excellence of our outstanding schools and the positive impact on these students is truly life-changing. Your support made this possible and set the stage for the bright start to the current school year.

For over 150 years, our schools have demonstrated amazing results and these last few months have shown more than ever that a quality education and a respect for the dignity and humanity of every person is critical to our society. Our scholarship recipients are mostly non-white (78%), qualify for federal assistance (70%), and are from single-parent homes (60%). The success profile for such a student is not good.

However, with an opportunity to attend one of our schools, students can break the cycle of poverty and become the productive and moral citizens we need in our community.

They will be prepared for their future, with 98% of scholarship recipients going on to college.

Over the last few years, I’ve spoken of the inequality in our country and how a quality education is one key ingredient in helping solve this terrible problem. I firmly believe that early education (pre-K to 12) is one the great equalizers.

Unfortunately, not every child has the benefit of being born into a community with great public schools. This is why I remain steadfast in my commitment to the Inner-City Scholarship Fund.

The ICSF gives at-risk children the opportunity for a superior education, in a comforting environment where they learn about what it means to be a caring person. Thank you for making this possible last year and for your consideration of support again this year.

Over the last thirty years my family has given and will continue to give to several dozen highly effective organizations assisting young people. However, I have not found one of these

groups that surpasses ICSF in positively changing outcomes of economically disadvantaged children. Last year, all but three ICSF scholarships recipients went on to college. Of the other three, one joined a union, one joined the military and one was working and taking online classes. A testament to the power of your support.

Meeting our students and visiting our schools is the best way to see the impact of your support. Usually this requires hours of your time and is difficult to schedule. ICSF Virtual Dinner is a Success The Inner-City Scholarship Fund Virtual Gala raised over $3.9M in scholarship support for in-need students.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in March, CSF was just over two weeks away from celebrating our 30th Annual Inner-City Scholarship Fund Gala. This is an event that hosts over 1,000 people each year in Downtown Boston, and raises over $3M every year to provide financial assistance to students in-need. Like so many organizations, CSF had to make the difficult decision to transition its signature event to a virtual one.

It was no surprise to see that CSF’s generous community of supporters

stepped up to the plate to ensure there was no lapse in support for our low-income students, who needed us now more than ever. Thanks to the leadership and guidance of Dinner Chairman and CEO of Abiomed, Mike Minogue, Peter Lynch, President Emeritus of CSF, Bill Fine and WCVB Channel 5, and Bob Reynolds and his team at Putnam Investments, the event raised $3.9 million in scholarship aid which includes additional support from our emergency fund for students most heavily impacted by the pandemic.

A Word from our Dinner Chair Dear Friends, In April 2020, I had the honor of serving as the Inner-City Scholarship Fund Dinner Chairman. It was a year like none before it, right at the cusp of the current pandemic we have all come to know. Despite great challenges, and thanks to the dedication of so many generous supporters, we were able to raise a record-breaking $3.9 million for the deserving students supported by the ICSF. Those who were able to attend virtually witnessed the profound impact a Catholic education can have on the lives of underserved children in our community, especially during times of crisis. We also got the chance to honor one of the great champions of this work, Bank of America.

Through their dedication and commitment to their philanthropic efforts, Bank of America has changed countless lives, including many of the students supported by the ICSF.

At the event, guests heard from Aisha Veras, a graduating senior from Saint Joseph Preparatory School. Growing up in Dorchester as a daughter of immigrants, Aisha spoke about the many challenges she faced, as well as the great opportunity she’s been given.

I am pleased to announce that Ron O’Hanley, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of State Street, has agreed to Chair the 31st Annual Gala. I am confident that under Ron’s leadership, next year’s gala will be another record-breaking event, ensuring a maximum number of students are served.

“My parents took the great risk to leave everything they knew behind them. Their story sparked in me an interest in law, and how it can help better people’s lives.

Without my scholarship from the Inner-City Scholarship Fund, I would have never been able to grow my passion and pursue my dreams. My dream of becoming a lawyer and helping the disadvantaged has been made possible by the Catholic Schools Foundation.”
