BRIEF “Housing is a process, not a product.”

Housing is an important social welfare measure and is an integral part of the nation’s economic development. As such housing deserves a high priority in planning. The connection between health and dwelling is one of the most important that exist.

The design is proposed as Employees’ quarters for railway employees, on a site of 7 hectares. 3 types of dwelling units are proposed in the design.

The design proposal is sensitive to local climatic conditions, lifestyles of the various user-groups, and an understanding of traditional aspects of culture which have continued in current day urban life.

The design also responds to the need of barrier free architecture for the differently abled. The built form reflects the socio-economic profile of the user groups.

CONCEPT The purpose is not just to design a shelter but a place where culture breeds. The housing units must complement and comply with the lifestyles of people while giving them opportunities to improve it.

These are some iterations to a basic housing block.

Project : Competition entry / Nuvocotto Bangalore Year : 2021 Type : Low-rise office building Location : Udaipur, Rajasthan

NARRATIVE This project, a rather unconventional architectural firm practicing vernacular architecture at its best, is located in Udaipur. The design focuses on the vision the firm upholds which can be conveyed precisely in three words - detailed, traditional and quaint.

This low-rise office building goes upto second floor, in a pyramidal pattern, on a square grid. It covers an area of 2290 sq.ft. on the site measuring 5005 sq.ft. It employs 13 people for work.

Terracotta jaalis by Nuvocotto, which has been substantially used in this project justifies the word to a T.

The terracotta jaalis fuse well with the context of Aravalli mountain range and Dhebar lake which surrounds the firm. Giving a true sense of serenity, these jaalis yield surreal patterns of light.

DESIGN EVOLUTION

MATERIAL

The theme was to work on square grid and design a linear structure for best utilization of spaces.

The grid was followed vertically as well, to have a stepped structure.

The design process was started off with a 13x13x10 ft. cuboid.

The material which stands out is terracotta jaalis. There are 5 types of jaali tiles used, each measuring 8x8x3 inches. Terracotta Jaalis are mostly used as non-load bearing walls or partitions for semi-visibility and ventilation. Be it exposed in walls or terracotta infusing art, Jaali is an earthy flavour in interiors and

Jaalis are a part of the culture of Udaipur, but in a different material. Terracotta jaalis incorporated here are advantageous as they provide with cost-effective building and evoke authenticity.

Cutting through from past to future, terracotta jaalis, a complete practical cooling solution, offers shade while encouraging natural lighting and air circulation.

Project : AIAC - International Design Studio Program and Competition Year : 2020 Type : Assembly building Location : Beijing, China

BRIEF China has a vast territory, abundant natural and cultural resources and a long history. Beijing is one of the ancient capitals of China. It is a famous historical and cultural city with a history of more than 3000 years.

The site is in the ancient steel factory of Beijing Capital Steel Company, which was displaced several years ago. The whole site of factory is now under transformation for new urban uses : cultural, recreational or commercial areas.

One of the main activities on the site is the competition fields for Winter Olympic Games 2022 in Beijing. For AIAC 2020, a part of the site (7.7 hectares) is chosen to develop in a multi-function building which will serve for Winter Olympic Games 2022 and will be used by public after.

The subject is industrial land transformation, new activities creation, integrate new landscape in old factory, etc. It is one of the most potential development areas in Beijing.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The Olympic logo rings represents five different nations coming together. These rings serve as the raw concept for the 22,025 sq.m. building design.

The form of the design follows the module of the existing cooling towers and melds with the heritage. It gives unobstructed flow of circulation and are holistic in nature. They are aerodynamic and progresses along the curvilinear facet. Each block has different scale with respect to its function with few blocks having sunken courtyards to maitain visual contact.

Finally, the blocks are interconnected through bridges to form one unique structure.

Project : Academic project / 5th semester Year : 2020 Type : Institutional building Location : Hyderabad, Telangana

BRIEF Civil court deals with private contraversies, particularly disputes that arise between individuals or between private businesses or institutions.

Its purpose is limited to providing just and acceptable rules for making decision and a forum where the dispute can be impartially and peacefully resolved.These factors are important because the use of civil courts is voluntary.

The building is designed with an understanding of circulation of Judges, Advocates, Public and Staff. The design approach is symmetrical with linear struccture and dynamic facade.

The project is proposed on a site covering 5.5 acres land, abutted by 10 and 13 metres road on its south and west boundaries. The building is a G+2 structure with its built-up on land measuring 1.2 acres.

Project : AIAC - International Design Studio Program and Competition Year : 2021 Type : Redevelopment project / Institutional building Location : Bastide,Carcassonne, France

SITE HISTORY The site is located in the City of Carcassonne which has more than 45,000 inhabitants and is a Medieval city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Bastide Saint-Louis (created in the 13th century), passing through the Pont Vieux (this link of stones loaded with 2000 years of history) and the port of Carcassonne on the Canal du Midi (built in the 17th century by the architect Pierre Paul Riquet and also classified as World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1996). This project is part of a global revitalization policy for the Bastide.

PROJECT CHALLENGES AND OBJECTIVES - Enhance the image of Bastide.

- Offer structuring and appropriate equipment to residents and users.

- Bring together university courses scattered around the outskirts of the city, in the heart of the city.

Plot - Cadastral BM 503

The public image of the project is built on three elements: architectural style, urban integration and environmental approach. The exterior image of the design, on one hand supports the dynamism of Bastide and, on the other hand is welcoming to the students. The connection to the public space reveals a clear and identifiable access for the users.

The plot concerned by the project, cadastral BM 503, is located within the perimeter of the SPR (Remarkable Heritage Site) and is subjected to the Regulations of the PSMV (Safeguard and Development Plan).

FUNCTIONAL PROGRAM The existing building on site covers 2,000 SQ.M., which is retained and an additional block is designed of 1,500 SQ.M., which goes up to 3rd floor. The proposed site accomodates : 1. University campus made up of - University Institute of Technology - Nursing Training Institute -Training Institute for Caregivers 2. Multipurpose space for tertiary or artisanal vocation 3. Restaurant area / panoramic bar

It’s a little wacky to think that we live, as Lilliput, among pieces of gigantic artworks every day. These artworks are the concrete or brick buildings and structures designed by the architects. Architecture is an art form that easily integrates itself into every aspect of our society. Hence, it makes sense that architects, and their brilliant ideas, play a significant role in developing society and a country as a whole, which consists of inspired and empowered citizens.

In reality, architecture gives a solid and livable form to the culture and beliefs of the people, it reflects the national ambition and targets of a nation in the world. It gives a position to a nation that it swanks in the world.

Architecture is a service discipline that is charged with innovation and creativity and holds the responsibility for national consciousness. In an active way, architecture must lead a nation and be in the vanguard of a nation’s progress.

Nation-building is a complex term. It cannot be limited to a single definition. According to my comprehension, nation-building is the headway for a nation to advanced technology, a reconstructed society with the unification of different ethnic groups with a vigorous economic situation. Architecture is undoubtedly the most efficient means to foster this system of ideas by unifying all of these under one cohesive nation.

‘A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the souls of its people.’ – Mahatma Gandhi I think, as an architecture student, it is possible for me to recast this sentence quoted by the Father of our Nation into the architectural sphere where it would become irony to say that ‘a nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the souls of its people, and the people reside in the culture of its nation’. Alvar Aalto’s quotation ‘Architecture belongs to culture, not civilization’ upholds this statement of mine, which means the dwelling where nation’s people reside is ironically its culture, designed by the architects, which holds a vital part in their hearts and souls. Even the modern architectural style has been evolved by going through the journey of architecture which started from the traditional and cultural ideas. Besides the built environment, architecture is a part of our culture. It stands as a representation of how we see ourselves, how we see the world as well as where we stand in the world. This can unquestionably be linked to nation-building.

Culture is one of the main pillars of development and sustenance of communities and no society can progress in its absence. Architecture is a balanced combination of art and technology which is ranked along with the literature and fine arts. In some aspects, it can even outrank them as it is loaded with technology which the latter is not equipped with. Technology and art are not the only elements, but harmony, functionality, quality, balance and spatial value are of equal importance too. These components are all determined by a society’s culture, customs, traditions, beliefs and geography. Architecture not only affects society as a whole but also tends to have a profound impact on its inhabitants on a more individual and personal level. Everything from the arrangement of the space to the texture finishes, from the ventilation to the lighting, it can contribute towards occupant’s health, mood, and productivity and may have a sanguine influence on social development in any country thus, by and large, building the nation.
