COMMUNITY CENTRE DESIGN THESIS | ACADEMIC

Aim of this project is to provide people with a common place for interaction, entertainment and socio cultural activities. The idea is to inculcate a training-eductaion centre which will include programes under skill India.

The main idea is influenced by the presence of a dense informal settlement and formal settlement in the context which exists in a symbiotic relationship, the community here becomes the resource and clientele.

Existing local markets are over-crowded and there infrastructure is deteriorating. And are less inclusive for informal bussiness activities, which is an important part of commerce. This project will generate new business opportunities for both formal and informal sector.

NIHAL VIHAR

Nihal Vihar is an unauthorised colony with a population of about 2 lakhs, it is a densely populated residential colony and majority of population work in tertiary sector.

Adjacent settlement of Paschim Vihar is largely dependent on people of Nihal Vihar as they provide house hold and other services to them. Being an unplanned area there are no dedicated commercial and public spaces available here.

It is a planned residential area with plotted and low rise group housing.

Most of the commercial here is located along main roads, and it mostly includes real estate,banks,ATMs, saloons.

Local DDA markets provides with commercial services but are not inclusive for all business groups and lack any kind of entertainment aspect.

METRO EXPANSION Under phase IV construction of DMRC magenta line is beign expanded, this will provide more easy accessibility toh the site.

HOSPITAL DESIGN 5th semester | Academic

Aim of this project was to design a 100 bedded hospital with a compact design due to small site area. Circulation is worked out thoroughly and all functions are placed strategically to achieve simpler circulation.

IPDs are provided with gardens that provides views of nature (here vegetation) to the patients that increases healing rates.

Massing of major functions is divided into two blocks. OPDs and IPDs are placed in one block ,emergency and OTs in other.

Both blocks are interconnected through corridors and a central core for vertical circulation.

Each block is served by a central core and one emergency exit, which also serves as service cores

OPDs and emergency are placed on the ground floor with IPDs and OTs on subsequent floors.

ELEVATOR INTERIOR DESIGN Schindler Hatke Lift Design Competition

Interiors for an elevator of size “1400x1200x2139” are designed based on a vintage theme.

The main Idea behind the design was to create a soothing lift environment with an illusion of upside down that forces the occupants to introspect their surroundings, hence ends up admiring the beautiful vintage themed interiors.

Overall look is inspired from vintage furniture with thick teak mouldings highlighting the features.

Shades of tarquoise, cream and brown color are used to achieve the desired results.

Design of ceiling is Inspired from vintage coffered ceilings, the coffers are made up of teak wood. 6W LEDs are used with an intensity of 450 LUX, and are mounted into the ceiling panels.

Perforated steel jali is provided for ventilation, which is mounted along the corner frame.

Lights Three different types of lights are used for ceiling and walls,all made in vintage style. Lights at the bottom are protected with metal jali.

Uttarkashi is located in Uttrakhand,India situated on the banks of river Yamuna and Bhagirathi, 1352m above sea level.

The state of Uttrakhand falls in seismically high-sensitive zone (IV and V) which adds to the construction challanges. People of this region have ancestral knowledge (about 1000 years),which has helped them evolve a unique architectural style specific to the terrain.

With this architectural style that has evolved over a large span of time, people are able to built earthquake resistant multi-storied houses with locally available material.

Wood and stones are extensively used, stone masonry, dry masonry, clay/mud with combination of wood are used.

The structures and warm and durable to cold climatic conditions.

KATH-KHUNI

In kath-khuni architecture wood and stones forms the structural frame work .

A non-rigid frame work is achieved by using wood and stones which helps in dispelling the vibrations during earthquakes and ground movements.

Fixing agents like mortar or any other synthetic materials are avoided .

Longest side of houses are placed such that they face south to receive maximum sunlight.

Cattles are kept on ground floor so that the heat energy radiating from them can flow upwards adding to the heat gains.

These structures have a long life span and the material used can be reused in future.

Shear key is a long vertical member, having length equal to multi storey heights, this shear key is inserted into the holes which provides support to the walls.

EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT FRAMEWORK A large timber log is provided, longer than building dimension with holes on both ends to provide support to the walls parallel to the floor beams.

Walls are filled with stone rubble, and the timber logs are interconnected to provide strong reinforcemnt. These pair of logs are stacked at regular intervals to provide structural framing.

Capital city, Delhi is home to a large number of inter-city emigrants, in a span of 50 years number of informal settlements have increased 17 times as per the economic survey of 2017.

These colonies are home to 8 lakh families.

These unplanned areas of Delhi exists in a correlation to the planned areas as both are dependent on each other for services and opportunities.

This project represents the current scenario of city of Delhi and a hyper-real vision/design intervention for the same in form of cartographs.

70% of Delhi’s population comprises the informal settlements, existing residing in these areas are

g along with planned area of Delhi. Above represented communities the backbone of the city.
