New York Fashion Week, which began on Friday, con nues. This is a large-scale event, which is annually a ended by at least 200 thousand people! The day before, an American designer of Ukrainian origin, Yaryna Zhuk, presented her work on the most pres gious catwalk in the world!

And right now, she will contact us directly from New York.

English Transcript: For the last seven years she [Yaryna Zhuk] has been living in the United States. She received one fashion degree in Ukraine and two in the United States. She graduated from one of the best fashion universi es in the U.S. - Academy of Art University.

This American designer with Ukrainian roots presented her graduate collec on on one of the most pres gious runways in the world - New York Fashion Week.

“Yarka [Yaryna], with a determina on of a li le bulldozer, headed towards her dream and nally reached it”, commented Ukrainian journalist and writer, Dorje Batuu, about the designer.

She [Yaryna] nalized prepara ons for this event in a small Manha an studio on 5th Avenue comple ng her ecologically-minded designs and combining fabric pieces to be sewn into appliqué. She said that the Ukrainian myth about the fern ower was her inspira on for this collec on. We will now nd out how the New York public reacted to the work of this American designer with Ukrainian roots.

STUDIO: We have American-Ukrainian designer Yaryna Zhuk live from New York. Yaryna - good morning to you. Thank you for speaking with us. It’s been literally only been a few hours since the show; please tell us - What were the reac ons, comments? How did everything go?

YARYNA: It was really a fascina ng and priceless experience! To see my work on the biggest U.S. runway, and one if the biggest in the world, it’s just incredible! I really can’t nd any other words. The collec on was accepted well. My heart and soul, and a lot of work, are in this collec on. According to the comments, this seemed obvious, and I hope it really was.

STUDIO: Maybe someone already wants to buy this designer’s clothing - maybe some worldrenown celebri es?

YARYNA: Typically, it doesn’t happen so fast. The collec on gets promoted, as does the event [NYFW}. It’s been only 5 hours since the show!

STUDIO: It’s in the future!

YARYNA: Yes!

STUDIO: You men oned that you were inspired by Ukrainian myth about fern ower. Please tell us more about it.

YARYNA: There are really two sources of inspira on: First is the fern ower; and here was my thought process - Many are looking for this ower, yet not able to nd it. People search for it during the night, and it seems that it should be a dark, or black ower. The second in uence was taken from a walk I took on the streets of San Francisco. There I saw a shadow from a ag that was moving and changing its shapes; the shadows looked like that dark ower. These two sources of inspira on combined and led me to create tex les for this collec on.

STUDIO: Yaryna, in one of his post’s [journalist] Dorje Batuu noted some numbers and facts about you: “…Seven years in the U.S., two professional educa ons, and always working in the industry. In summary, a diploma from one of the best universi es in the U.S. and a graduate collec on showcasing at New York Fashion Week.” Yaryna, what was the hardest point on this path? We understand that this is just the beginning, however, as one of Ukrainians who achieved your dream, we just want to know what was the most di cult for you on this path?

YARYNA: The hardest was to spend a month away from my family. I went to San Francisco to work on the collec on; being all alone and away from everyone was a li le hard. The rest was piece of cake!

STUDIO: How does America react to our people, our community in this industry - the world’s fashion industry? And what was the reac on to you, when you rst appeared here?

YARYNA: Honestly, I really like that America doesn’t really look at one’s country of origin – doing so is widely considered a form of discrimina on. They accept those who work well and do beau ful work. I mean, if you put forth your e ort, and it shows - it will be accepted [and you will be accepted]. It feels very nice. If you really want something, you are able to achieve it, if you work hard.

STUDIO: For seven years you’ve lived in America - How did you get there? Did you go straight there to get your educa on? Or, is there a di erent story?

YARYNA: No, we moved because we were ready for [looking for the right Ukrainian word] a new challenge. (STUDIO: “Yeah”], and for a bit more personal freedom, and personal growth. I went to school right away, I had a choice to change my profession, or con nue to working in the industry. I really can’t imagine being anything else except a fashion designer.

STUDIO: When was the last me you were in Ukraine? Are you planning to come back?

YARYNA: The last me… eight, no, seven years ago; educa on and work takes all my me.

Paying my mortgage, paying my bills, rou ne American life. Planning? I don’t know, - it depends

if there will be any opportunity for me. For me it is important to keep working and keep evolving. It doesn’t really ma er to me in which country I do so.

STUDIO: Yaryna, this is a great success, many Ukrainian designers dream about it! What is your next step, your next challenge?

YARYNA: I have two op ons now, and I am looking into both of them simultaneously. First is to work in Prêt-à-Porter or Ready-to-Wear on my own; it is costly and hard. Second, is to go to a high-end, established brand and work there.

STUDIO: How much is your most expensive dress?

YARYNA: The most expensive… probably $700-$800 is the most inexpensive from this colle on.

To be honest, I need to sit down and summarize the collec on prices, I didn’t even have me for it yet.

STUDIO: May you have me for everything! We will con nue to wish you unbelievable success, and will be pleased to keep in touch with you.
