There are 48 dormant volcanoes in Auckland, and no visit to this region is complete without visiting at least one – photographs from the top are always astounding. Hop on a ferry to Rangitoto Island, climb to the summit of Maungawhau (Mt Eden), take a picnic to Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill) or explore tunnels by torchlight at North Head.
